Abstract:As a powerful tool for medical diagnosis and bioanalysis, conventional optical spectrometers are generally expensive, bulky and always require an accompanying data processing device. In this work, we developed a novel smartphone-based CD-spectrometer (SCDS) for high sensitive and ultra-portable colorimetric analysis, with the advantage of cost-effective and simplicity. The distance between the light source and slit, the structure of SCDS and the parameters of camera in the smartphone were all optimized to ensure the best analytical performance. Besides, the SCDS employed HSV color model and utilized the overall intensity calculated by summing V-value of adjacent position for the absorbance measurement. In this way the errors caused by the low resolution of CD-grating can effectively be eliminated to promote the sensitivity of the SCDS. The performance of the SCDS was first validated for colorimetric detection of BSA with a detection limit of 0.0073 mg/mL, which is superior compared to that of the microtiter plate reader (MTPR). Moreover, by combining with 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine-manganese dioxide (TMB-MnO2) nanosheets reaction, a high sensitive and specific system for ascorbic acid detection was established. The SCDS gives a detection range from 0.6250 mu M to 40 mu M with a detection limit of 0.4946 mu M for AA detection. Compared to other studies, the SCDS features wide detection range and very low detection limit with low cost instrument. Therefore, the SCDS will be an ideal and promising colorimetric system for point-of-care (POC) application in food security, disease diagnosis and environmental monitoring. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Ascorbic acid, dopamine, and uric acid are important electroactive biomolecules for health monitoring and they coexist in serum or urine. Their quantitative determination by electrochemistry could provide the accurate reference for diseases diagnosis and treatment. However, the traditional electrochemical workstations are too large for on-field inspection. Hence, the design of handheld electrochemical system for the detection of biomolecules is significant for point-of-care testing (POCT). In this paper, a smartphone-based integrated voltammetry system using modified electrode was developed for simultaneous detection of biomolecules. The system contained a disposable sensor, a coin-size detector, and a smartphone equipped with application program. Screen-printed electrodes were used as sensors for the detection, on which reduced graphene oxide and gold nanoparticles were electrochemically deposited by the system. The detector was used with voltammetric methods, in which excitation voltage was applied on the sensors and subsequent current responses were detected. The smartphone is the core component to communicate with the detector, calculate data, and plot voltammograms in real-time. Then, the system was applied to detect standard solutions of the biomolecules and their mixtures as examples. The results showed that the peak currents of each substance increased with higher concentration and the method allowed the discrimination of the different potentials of the studied species. Finally, the practical applications of the system were tested through detections of the biomolecules in artificial urine. The results exhibited that the system could be used to detect electrochemical activity of biomolecules with linear, high sensitivity, and specific responses in point-of-care testing.
Rapid colormetric detection of pesticide residues based on enzyme inhibition method

Abstract:In recent years, due to the frequently reported food safety events, people generally care about the food safety. According to former research, the application amount of organophosphorus pesticides and carbamate pesticides possesses about 70% of the total application amount of pesticides. So, it is necessary to develop fast, sensitive and accurate analysis of pesticide residues to assure the quality of agricultural products. However, the existing food quality supervision system is generally based on the instrument analysis technology, which is time-consuming and high-costing, and will delay the actual release of information for the food safety determination. So it cannot provide the rapid response to the consumer queries. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop the rapid detection techniques for food safety. A novel disposable enzyme tablet was developed for rapid colorimetric detection of pesticide residues in agricultural products, which based on the inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity by pesticides and the AChE-catalyzed hydrolysis of chromogenic substrate, indoxyl acetate. As known, indoxyl acetate can be catalyzed to indole with the existence of AChE. Indole was oxidized in air quickly, turning to be blue-green, which could be easily distinguished by the naked eye. Firstly, the AChE was immobilized onto the Hybond N+nylon membrane. It was a crucial work to choose a suitable immobilization method. In our study, the physical absorption method seemed more easy-operative and suitable than the cross-linking since it rarely has no inference on the results. Besides, immobilization temperature, time and methods of drying were optimized in the immobilization process. The enzymatic tablets were immobilized under 4℃ for 30 min, then freeze-dried in a vacuum chamber, the recovery rate of enzyme activity was as high as 27.3%, which considered to be optimal. The other parameters such as substrate concentration, inhibition time and coloring time were optimized. The results were as follows: the best amount of acetate solution was 10 mmol/L, and the inhibition time and the color develop time were 15 and 10 min, respectively. In the measurement process, the color of the enzyme tablet was blue-green. Through analyzing the changes of color intensity, the limit of detection (LOD) of this assay system were 1μg/mL for omethoate, 0.05μg/mL for chlorpyrifos, 1.5 μg/mL for carbaryl, and 0.8 μg/mL for pirimicarb, all of them have attained the requirements of the maximum residue limits in food. Detection results of pesticide residues in real samples of grape and cabbage showed that the enzyme tablet had high sensitivity, high degree of accuracy, and good reproducibility, suggesting its great potential for practical application in rapid qualitative determination of organophosphorus (OP) and carbamate (CM) pesticide residues in agricultural products. Furthermore, this assay has long storage time at 60 days. In sum, this work provides a feasible way to develop fast, sensitive detection for pesticide residue.
Green and accurate analytical method for monitoring atropine in foodstuffs as a contaminant and in pharmaceutical samples

Abstract:Nowadays, atropine has been highlighted because of its anticholinergic effect and contamination in foodstuffs, and therefore, using an accurate and sensitive method for its determination is crucial in human health and food safety. In this study, a novel spectrophotometric method was suggested for the swift quantification of atropine. The proposed method was based on the formation of red ion-pair complexes between the drugs and the cyanidin reagent extracted from red cabbage (RC). In this regard, the effect of pH, time, and temperature was explored and optimized. According to the results, atropine determining was shown the best performance in pH 2 at room temperature in 30 min. In addition, this method revealed linear responses from 10 nM to 1 μM of atropine with limit of detection (LOD) value of 0.0019 μM. Also, the selectivity value of this method was investigated in the presence of some drugs with the same structure and some common species as interferences. The results verified no interference in atropine determination, as well as, the results obtained from repeatability (RSD ⁓ 2.56) of this method were acceptable. Moreover, the applicability of this method was tested in buckwheat and atropine sulfate as food and pharmaceutical real sample, respectively. Real sample analysis was carried out with the standard addition method and the recovery percentages (96.54–104.87%) witnessed the high capability of this method in atropine determination.

Abstract:A low-cost and reliable analytical method based on the combination of a newly designed Fe 3 O 4 @Au as peroxidase mimetics, supported on smartphone analysis software package was proposed for the determination of glucose content in food samples. The nanocomposite was prepared by self-assembling technique, and the characterization was carried out using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transforms infrared, and X-ray diffractometer. Record the color change of the solution with a smartphone camera and optimize the operation parameters and reaction conditions. A smartphone with a free self-developed app was accustomed live the RGB (red-green-blue) values of color intensity within the Fe 3 O 4 @Au system and were processed with Image J software before computationally convert them glucose concentrations. At the optimization experiment, reaction temperature of 60°C, reaction time of 50 min and the amount of addition of Fe 3 O 4 @Au 0.0125 g was the optimal combination of detecting glucose smartphone color detection system. Hereon, the accuracy of the proposed method was evaluated by comparison between smartphone colorimetry and UV-vis spectrophotometer, a linear calibration in the range of 0.25∼15 mmol/L glucose was obtained with minimum detection limit of 1.83 and 2.25 μmol/L, respectively. The proposed method was applied effectively to the detection of glucose in actual samples. The results were in accordance with the conventional UV-vis spectrophotometer method.

Novel and portable test strip platform for rapid and sensitive on-site detection of procymidone pesticide

Abstract:A novel and portable detection platform for procymidone (PRM) was developed by combining simple sample pretreatment, lateral flow test strips based on multi-branched gold nanoparticle (LFTS-MBGNP), and a smartphone. Based on the large surface area of MBGNPs, rapid detection of PRM was realized by simple naked eye observation. By utilizing a smartphone as a portable signal analyzer, ultrasensitive quantitative detection of PRM in red wine was realized with the limits of detection (LOD) of 1.60 ng/mL, which was 3000 times lower than the US limit (5 ppm). Moreover, rapid detection of four kinds of fruits and vegetables was achieved within 10 min, with LODs of 4.34 ng/g, 6.93 ng/g, 8.99 ng/g, and 5.03 ng/g, respectively, which could meet the PRM limit of the European Union (10 ng/g). Integrating the optimized QuEChERS pretreatment method, the developed platform realized a simple and sensitive on-site detection of PRM pesticide in foods and red wine within 45 min. This platform provides a useful tool and new idea for rapid screening and detection of pesticide residues in food.
Placement challenges: Implications for Long-term care of dementia sufferers

Abstract:Caregivers and long-term care staff seek appropriate placements for dementia sufferers, but there is little empirical research to guide such decision-making. However, recent national trends in mental health care have emphasized the placement of persons with serious mental illness in privatized, community-based residences. This body of empirical research has indicated that persons with psychosis, substance use disorder, assaultive behavior, and medication noncompliance have shorter tenure in these residential settings. These findings are also important for other, more traditional health care settings, as the patients discharged from community residences may require assistance on occasion from such other settings. This study continues the inquiry into the characteristics of patients with serious mental illness, who have shorter tenure in community residences. Dangerous behaviors, treatmentresistant psychosis, medical illnesses, and social-interpersonal skill deficiencies were common causes for discharge in this study. Since there remains a paucity of published empirical studies on the issue for patients with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, we present the implications of, and guidelines for, addressing these issues in dementia sufferers in long-term care settings.

Abstract:Analysis techniques have been done to provide the physical evidence that the electrical signature observed from a single event gate rupture (SEGR) event on a deep trench oxide capacitor from 90nm bulk complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology, used for the reduction of single event upsets (SEU), does identify that dielectric breakdown has occurred. SEGR damaged trench oxides were identified via a voltage contrast technique using a focused ion beam (FIB). The FIB was used to delayered and expose the deep trenches. A wet chemical etch was used to identify the location of SEGR leakage path. The oxide rupture location was observed at the top of the deep trench capacitor.

Abstract:Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world. The ultimate cause of vision loss due to glaucoma is thought to be retinal ganglion cell (RGC) apoptosis. Neuroprotection of RGC is becoming an important approach of glaucoma therapy. Several lines of evidence suggest that estrogen has neurotrophic and neuroprotective properties. In this study, we examine the role of estrogen in preventing RGC loss in DBA/2J mouse, an in vivo model of an inherited (pigmentary) glaucoma. Two‐month‐old female DBA/2J mice were anesthetized and ovariectomized with or without subcutaneous 17β‐estradiol (βE2) pellet implantation. RGC survival was evaluated from flat‐mounted whole retinas by counting retrograde‐labeled cells. The loss of nerve fibers and RGC were also evaluated in paraffin‐fixed retinal cross sections. Biochemical alterations in the retinas of DBA/2J mice in response to systemic injection of βE2 were also examined. We have made several important observations showing that: (1) βE2 treatment reduced the loss of RGC and neurofibers through inhibition of ganglion cell apoptosis, (2) βE2 activated Akt and cAMP‐responsive‐element‐binding‐protein (CREB), (3) βE2 up‐regulated thioredoxin‐1 (Trx‐1) expression, (4) βE2 reduced the increased activations of mitogen‐activated protein kinases (MAPK) and NF‐κB, (5) βE2 inhibited the increased interleukin‐18 (IL‐18) expression, and (6) treatment with tamoxifen, an estrogen receptor antagonist, blocked βE2‐mediated activation of Akt and inhibition of MAPK phosphorylation in the retinas of DBA/2J mice. These findings suggest the possible involvement of multiple biochemical events, including estrogen receptor/Akt/CREB/thioredoxin‐1, and estrogen receptor/MAPK/NF‐κB, in estrogen‐mediated retinal ganglion cell protection. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Stimulus Response of GQD-Sensitized Tb/GMP ICP Nanoparticles with Dual-Responsive Ratiometric Fluorescence: Toward Point-of-Use Analysis of Acetylcholinesterase and Organophosphorus Pesticide Poisoning with Acetylcholinesterase as a Biomarker

Abstract:In this study, by rationally designing the stimulus response of graphene quantum dot (GQD)-sensitized terbium/guanine monophosphate (Tb/GMP) infinite coordination polymer (ICP) nanoparticles, we have constructed a smartphone-based colorimetric assay with ratiometric fluorescence, which could be applied for the detection of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) directly. First, GQDs with abundant functional groups were chosen as the guest, which not only could be used as one of the signal readouts but also served as the antenna ligand to further sensitize the fluorescence of the host Tb/GMP. Upon being excited at 330 nm, the green fluorescence of the Tb/GMP host is highly enhanced, while the blue fluorescence of GQDs is suppressed due to the confinement of the ICP host. With the presence of thiocholine (TCh), an enzymatic product hydrolyzed from acetylthiocholine (ATCh) by AChE, the competitive coordination of Tb3+ between GMP and TCh results in the collapse of the ICP network and thereby the release of GQDs into the solution; thus, the fluorescence of Tb/GMP turns off and the fluorescence of GQDs turns on. The dual-responsive ratiometric fluorescent intensity change leads to the corresponding green-to-blue fluorescent color change obviously, which constitutes a novel mechanism for the colorimetric analysis of AChE. Moreover, when OPs are subsequently introduced, the activity of AChE is blocked, thus preventing the stimulus response of GQD@Tb/GMP ICP nanoparticles, leading to the fluorescent color change from greenish-blue to green, which could also be employed for OP detection. Benefitting from the high sensitivity, good reliability, and the obvious color changes, the method demonstrated here is a promising candidate to realize smartphone-based point-of-use applications, which is of great importance for timely clinical diagnosis and treatment of OPs related to health issues with AChE as an exposure biomarker in less industrialized countries, in remote settings, or even in home care services.

Abstract:A facile, economic, and portable test kit based on target-responsive hydrogel with smartphone detection was fabricated for the accurate determination of dichlorvos in tap water and food samples. Carbon dots (CDs) and CdTe quantum dots (QDs) embedded hydrogel were employed as indicator, and fluorescence of CdTe QDs (645 nm) was dynamically quenched by Cu2+ while that of CDs (490 nm) were non-response for Cu2+, em erging a typical ratiometric fluorescence signal. Acetylcholinesterase hydrolyzed acetylthiocholine to generate thiocholine that bound with Cu2+ strongly via S-Cu-S bond. Dichlorvos as competitive inhibitor for acetylcholinesterase prevented the generation of thiocholine, which blocked the formation of Cu-thiocholine complex and changed the ratiometric fluorescence signal. The signal of the test kit, which was recorded by smartphone's camera, was transduced by ImageJ software into the color parameter that was linearly proportional to the logarithm of dichlorvos concentration. This portable test kit showed wide linear range of 1 to 40 ppb and low detection limit of 0.38 ppb for dichlorvos. This test kit exhibited rapid sample-to-answer detection time (50 min) of dichlorvos in tap water and food samples, and the recoveries were in the range 81.3 to 111% with relative standard deviations of less than 9.1%.

Multifunctional MnCo@C yolk-shell nanozymes with smartphone platform for rapid colorimetric analysis of total antioxidant capacity and phenolic compounds

Abstract:Accurate on-site analysis of food quality, environmental pollutants, and disease biomarkers is of great significance for safeguarding public health. In this work, based on the novel nanozymes, MnCo oxides@carbon yolk-shell nanocages (MnCo@C NCs), a portable colorimetric sensor with smartphone platform has been developed for rapid, on-site and quantitative analysis of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and phenolic compounds. The MnCo@C NCs are synthesized via one-step calcination of polydopamine-coated MnCo Prussian blue analogs (MnCo-PBA@PDA). The PDA-derived carbon shell is found to be able to protect the nanocages from collapsing, thus increasing their specific surface areas and porosity. Benefiting from the unique structure and multivalent MnCo bimetallic oxides, the MnCo@C NCs perform outstanding catalytic performance and multiple enzyme-mimicking activities including oxidase, laccase and catalase. Hence, a multifunctional application platform integrated smartphone has been constructed for rapid and sensitive colorimetric detection of three model analytes (i.e., ascorbic acid (AA), 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DP), and epinephrine) with extremely low detection limits of 0.29 μM, 0.76 μM, and 0.70 μM, respectively. This sensor device is successfully applied in TAC analysis in vegetables, fruits, and beverages, as well as epinephrine determination in human serum samples. This work provides new insights into designing multifunctional nanozymes to advance the instant detection technology in the field of food supervision, environment monitoring, and human health.
Target-induced inner-filter effect-based ratiometric sensing platform by fluorescence modulation of persistent luminescent nanoparticles and 2, 3-diaminophenazine

Abstract:A ratiometric fluorescence sensing platform with smartphone was designed for highly sensitive detection of glutathione (GSH), ascorbic acid (AA), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity by modulation the inner filter effect (IFE) between persistent luminescent nanoparticles (PLNPs) and 2, 3-diaminophenazine (DAP). As an oxidase-mimetic nanomaterial, MnO2 nanosheets (MnO2 NS) can oxidize o-phenylenediamine (OPD) to DAP, which exhibited a yellow fluorescence emission signal at 558 nm, whereas the fluorescence of PLNPs at 475 nm was quenched through IFE. The presence of GSH and AA reduced MnO2 NS to Mn2+, which inhibited the oxidation of OPD, and effectively preserved the blue fluorescence of PLNPs at 475 nm. Further, ALP can catalytically hydrolyze L-ascorbic acid 2-phosphate trisodium salt (AAP) to yield AA. Therefore, a simple, high sensitivity and reproducibility, and good selectivity ratiometric fluorescence sensing platform was fabricated to detect GSH, AA and ALP activity by measuring the ratio of the fluorescence intensity of DAP and PLNPs. The linear range for GSH, AA and ALP activity were 1-100 μM, and 1 to 5 mU/mL, and the limit of detection were 0.2 μM, 0.33 μM and 0.3 mU/mL, respectively. Finally, the proposed sensor was utilized in spiked human serum and urine samples detection with satisfactory recoveries. Moreover, the red-green-blue (RGB) intensities of a color image were acquired via scanning measurement analysis with the help of the color-scanning application on smartphones and portable UV lamps, enabling real-time and in-situ detection of ALP activity, GSH, and AA.

Abstract:Cost-effective and user-friendly quantitation at points-of-need plays an important role in food safety inspection, environmental monitoring, and biomedical analysis. This study reports a stand-alone smartphone-based fluorospectrophotometer (the SBS) installed with a custom-designed application (the SBS-App) for on-site quantitation of pesticide using a ratiometric sensing scheme. The SBS can collect fluorescence emission spectra in the wavelength range of 380-760 nm within 5 s. A ratiometric fluorescence probe is facilely prepared by directly mixing the blue-emissive carbon nanodots (the Fe3+-specific fluorometric indicator) and red-emissive quantum dots (the internal standard) at a ratio of 11.6 (w/w). Based on the acetylcholinesterase/choline oxidase dual enzyme-mediated cascade catalytic reactions of Fe2+/Fe3+ transformation, a ratiometric fluorescence sensing scheme is developed. The practicability of the SBS is validated by on-site quantitation of chlorpyrifos in apple and cabbage with a comparable accuracy to the GC-MS method, offering a scalable solution to establish a cost-effective surveillance system for pesticide pollution.

Abstract:Herein, a portable lab-in-a-syringe device integrated with a smartphone sensing platform was designed for rapid, visual quantitative determination of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) via colorimetric and fluorescent signals. The device was chiefly made up of a conjugate pad labeled with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide-coated gold nanoparticles (CTAB-Au NPs) and a sensing pad modified by ratiometric probes (red-emission quantum 2 quantum dots, 2@gQDs probe), which was assembled through a disposable syringe and reusable plastic filter. In the detection system, thiocholine (Tch), the hydrolysis product of thioacetylcholine (ATch) by acetylcholinesterase (AchE), could trigger the aggregation of CTAB-Au NPs, resulting in a significant color change from red to purple. Then, CTAB-Au NPs flowed vertically upward and bound to the 2@gQDs probe on the sensing pad, reducing the fluorescence resonance energy transfer effect between CTAB-Au NPs and gQDs. Meanwhile, rQDs embedded in SiO2 NPs remained stable as internal reference fluorescence, achieving a color transition from red to green. Thus, based on the inhibition of AChE activity by OPs, a colorimetric and fluorescent dual-mode platform was constructed for on-site detection of OPs. Using glyphosate as a model, with the support of a color recognizer application (APP) on a smartphone, the ratio of red and green channel values could be utilized for accurate OP quantitative analysis ranging from 0 to 10 μM with a detection limit of 2.81 nM (recoveries, 90.8–122.4%; CV, 1.2–3.4%). Abstract:Objective: This paper describes a new, digital image colourimetry-based format for the quantification of analytes in an aqueous solution. Method: The proposed method is based on analyte pre-concentration by adsorption onto Bentone LT. Bentone LT pellet isolation comes after adsorption, followed by in-situ application of an analyteselective chromogenic reaction. The resulting pellet colouration is captured by the phone’s integrated camera and assessed using the free open-source image processing software, ImageJ. Responses are calibrated and quantified. Results: We tested the applicability of the proposed methodology for the quantification of specific model analytes which are of concern in environmental matrices (methyl red, Co(II), uric acid, topotecan). The smartphone-based assay was proven reliable in quantifying the model analytes (standard recovery of 82-116%), alone or in mixture, from dilute aqueous solutions and was found to depict accurately the adsorption behaviour followed photometrically in solution. Lower limit of linearity was calculated at 0.05, 0.11, 0.85 and 0.20 μg/mL for methyl red, Co(II), uric acid, and topotecan, respectively. The proposed format was found superior when compared to alternative published photometric/ colourimetric assays in terms of the lower limit of linearity. In the presence of possible adsorption interferents, the lower limit of linear response was shifted to slightly higher concentrations for topotecan i.e. from 0.2 μg/mL to 0.5 μg/mL. Conclusion: We here demonstrate the extended applicability of the proposed methodology for the smartphone-based quantification of the specific model analytes. The applicability of this analysis format likely extends to other analytes, where analyte-specific colour formation is feasible.

Abstract:Food sources are susceptible to contamination with ochratoxin A (OTA), which is a serious threat to human health. Thus, the construction of novel, simple sensing platforms for OTA monitoring is of utmost need. Manganese-doped lead halide perovskite quantum dots encapsulated with mesoporous SiO 2 (Mn-CsPbBr 3 QDs@SiO 2 ) were prepared here and used as a ratiometric fluorescent probe for OTA. Mn-CsPbBr 3 QDs, synthesized at room temperature, exhibit dual emission with maximum wavelengths of 440 and 570 nm and, when embedded in the SiO 2 layer, produce a stable and robust photoluminescence signal. By adding OTA to the probe, emission at 440 nm increases while emission at 570 nm decreases, so a ratiometric response is obtained. Experimental variables affecting the probe signal were studied and optimized and the mechanism of sensing was discussed. This ratiometric sensor demonstrated excellent selectivity and low detection limit (4.1 ng/ml) as well as a wide linear range from 5.0 to 250 ng/ml for OTA. A simple portable smartphone-based device was also constructed and applied for the fluorescence assay. With different OTA concentrations, the multicolor transition from pink to blue under a UV lamp led to simple visual and smartphone-assisted sensing of OTA by using a color analyzing application. Satisfactory recoveries in black tea, coffee, moldy fig and flour samples confirmed the reliability of the assay. The accuracy of the probe was proved by comparison of the results with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Abstract:The rapid detection of antibiotic residual in everyday life is very important for food safety. In order to realize the on-site and visual detection of antibiotic, a POCT method was established by using digital image colorimetry based on smartphone. Streptomycin was taken as the analyte model of antibiotics, streptomycin aptamer preferentially recognized analyte, and the excess aptamer hybridized with the complementary DNA to form the dsDNA. SYBR Green I combined with the dsDNA and then emitted obvious green fluorescence, thus the fluorescence intensity decreased with the increasing of streptomycin concentration. Then a smartphone-based device was constructed as the fluorescence readout. The smartphone camera acquired the images of the fluorescence derived from the samples, and the Touch Color APP installed in smartphone read out the RGB values of the images. There was a linear relationship between the G values and the streptomycin concentrations in the range of 0.1-100µM. The detection limit was 94nM, which was lower than the maximum residue limit defined by World Health Organization. The POCT method was applied for determining streptomycin in chicken and milk samples with recoveries in 94.1-110%. This method had the advantages of good selectivity, simple operation and on-site visualization.

Abstract:The deficiency in rapid and in-field detection methods and portable devices that are reliable, easy-to-use, and low cost, results in the difficulties to uphold the high safety standards in China. In this study, we introduce a rapid and cost-effective smartphone-based method for point-of-need food safety inspection, which employs aptamer-conjugated AuNPs as the colorimetric indicator, and a battery-powered optosensing accessory attached to the camera of a smartphone for transmission images capture. A user-friendly and easy-to-use Android application is developed for automatic digital image processing and result reporting. Streptomycin (STR) is selected as the proof-of-concept target, and its specific quantitation can be realized with a LOD of 12.3 nM (8.97 μg kg-1) using the reported smartphone-based method. The quantitation of STR in honey, milk and tap water confirm the reliability and applicability of the reported method. The extremely high acceptance of smartphone in remote and metropolitan areas of China and ease-of-use of the reported method facilitate active food contaminant and toxicant screening, thus making the implementation of the whole food supply chain monitoring and surveillance possible and hence significantly improving the current Chinese food safety control system.

Abstract:In this study, a novel highly sensitive colorimetric platform has been designed for malathion assay based on Fe-N/C SAzyme. The as-synthesized SAzyme can directly oxidize 3,3 ́,5,5 ́-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to generate blue colored oxidized TMB. L-ascorbic acid-2-phosphate (AA2P), a substrate of acid phosphatase (ACP), could be hydrolyzed to AA, thereafter inhibit the oxidization reaction of TMB, leading to a conspicuous blue color fading. With the addition of malathion hindered the ACP activity and limited the AA production, resulting in the recovery of the catalytic activity of single-atom nanozyme. Under optimized operational conditions, a novel colorimetric assay has been designed for malathion detection with LOD of 0.42 nM. Besides, quantification of malathion in environmental and food samples was achieved based on the proposed strategy. In addition, the successfully integrated paper/smartphone sensor provided sensitive, and rapid, reliable detection of malathion with a LOD of 1 nM.
