Abstract:Different languages present us with rather different likelihoods of deleting consonants. The very common deletion processes that target /t/ and /d/ in various English dialects have been discussed in detail in linguistic research, but English does not exhibit other well-known phonological processes such as /s/ deletion, a process that is very common in a number of Romance languages. A curious linguist might therefore want to know what leads to the observed in-language typology of deletion processes in any language. This paper traces some of the reasons for the in-language typology of deletion processes in English to phone informativity, a concept first introduced in Cohen Priva & Jurafsky (2008). Phone informativity tries to approximate the usefulness of recognizing a phone for what it is: how useful it is for language users to understand that some segment in a sequence of segments they hear is a /t/, for instance, rather than some other phone. This approximation is done by assessing how helpful each phone usually is in word recognition, given a corpus of spoken language data. To evaluate whether phone informativity plays a significant role in determining the in-language typology of deletion processes in English, the paper begins by examining the deletion rates of English stops. The deletion patterns illuminate several shortcomings of theoretical frameworks such as markedness and underspecification, as well as data-driven approaches such as uniform information density in explaining the observed data. The magnitude of influence that phone informativity has on phone deletion is evaluated using corpus-based experiments that control for phonological and phonetic biases, as well as different information theoretic explanations. Finally, a discussion of functional and non-functional explanations in phonology places informativity as a bridge between the two.

Borderline Personality Disorder and Emotion Dysregulation

Abstract:Abstract Background Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) have consistently been associated with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Still, it is not yet entirely understood if and how different types of ACE (emotional, physical, sexual abuse, neglect) relate to different BPD subdomains (affective instability, identity disturbance, negative relationships, self-harm). Insecure attachment and lower perceived social support are associated with both ACE and BPD and may therefore contribute to their relationship. No study so far integrated all these variables in one model, while accounting for their mutual influence on each other. We investigated the interplay of BPD subdomains, ACE, attachment, and perceived social support using a graph-theoretical approach. Methods An international sample of 1692 participants completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), the Borderline Feature Scale from the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI-BOR), the Adult Attachment Scale (AAS), and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) via an online survey. We estimated a partial correlation network including subscales of the CTQ and the PAI-BOR as nodes. We extended the network by including subscales of the AAS and MSPSS as additional nodes. Results Emotional abuse was the most central node in both networks and a bridge between other types of ACE and BPD features. All domains of BPD except affective instability were associated with emotional abuse. Identity disturbances was the most central node in the BPD network. The association between ACE and BPD features was partly but not fully explained by attachment and social support. Conclusion Our findings suggest that emotional abuse is an important link in the association between ACE and BPD features, also when taking attachment and social support into account. Findings further suggest an outstanding role of identity disturbance, linking emotional abuse to affective instability and being strongly associated with attachment anxiety.

Abstract:Borderline personality disorder (BPD) was introduced in the DSM‐III in 1980. From the DSM‐III to the DSM‐5, no major changes have occurred in its defining criteria. The disorder is characterized by instability of self‐image, interpersonal relationships and affects. Further symptoms include impulsivity, intense anger, feelings of emptiness, strong abandonment fears, suicidal or self‐mutilation behavior, and transient stress‐related paranoid ideation or severe dissociative symptoms. There is evidence that BPD can be reliably diagnosed and differentiated from other mental disorders by semi‐structured interviews. The disorder is associated with considerable functional impairment, intensive treatment utilization, and high societal costs. The risk of self‐mutilation and suicide is high. In the general adult population, the lifetime prevalence of BPD has been reported to be from 0.7 to 2.7%, while its prevalence is about 12% in outpatient and 22% in inpatient psychiatric services. BPD is significantly associated with other mental disorders, including depressive disorders, substance use disorders, post‐traumatic stress disorder, attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder, bipolar disorder, bulimia nervosa, and other personality disorders. There is convincing evidence to suggest that the interaction between genetic factors and adverse childhood experiences plays a central role in the etiology of BPD. In spite of considerable research, the neurobiological underpinnings of the disorder remain to be clarified. Psychotherapy is the treatment of choice for BPD. Various approaches have been empirically supported in randomized controlled trials, including dialectical behavior therapy, mentalization‐based therapy, transference‐focused therapy, and schema therapy. No approach has proved to be superior to others. Compared to treatment as usual, psychotherapy has proved to be more efficacious, with effect sizes between 0.50 and 0.65 with regard to core BPD symptom severity. However, almost half of the patients do not respond sufficiently to psychotherapy, and further research in this area is warranted. It is not clear whether some patients may benefit more from one psychotherapeutic approach than from others. No evidence is available consistently showing that any psychoactive medication is efficacious for the core features of BPD. For discrete and severe comorbid anxiety or depressive symptoms or psychotic‐like features, pharmacotherapy may be useful. Early diagnosis and treatment of BPD can reduce individual suffering and societal costs. However, more high‐quality studies are required, in both adolescents and adults. This review provides a comprehensive update of the BPD diagnosis and clinical characterization, risk factors, neurobiology, cognition, and management. It also discusses the current controversies concerning the disorder, and highlights the areas in which further research is needed.

Abstract:"Borderline Personality Disorder is a severe condition that affects self and interpersonal dimensions and emotional and behavioral regulation. Since the last decades of the 20th century, an impressive amount of research and clinical contributions on BPD came from specific fields such as psychiatry, clinical psychology, psychopharmacology, and, more recently, cognitive neuroscience. All contributions tackled the challenges of finding reliable diagnostic categories, highlighting detailed developmental trajectories, and fostering effective treatment protocols. However, as results come from different areas, it is often challenging to depict a coherent and yet multifaceted framework on this topic. In this study, we conducted a scientometric analysis of the available literature on BPD to provide a systematic and comprehensive overview of research on BPD and emphasize historical changes, intertwining between fields and new areas of investigation. Results clearly show the evolution of research on BPD starting from the initial development of the construct, passing through the studies on treatment efficacy, the results of longitudinal studies, the advances in cognitive neurosciences, and the recent dimensional conceptualization in DSM-5. Moreover, it emphasizes promising areas of investigation, such as the relations of BPD with NSSI, ADHD, and vulnerable features of narcissism."

Thermal benefits of melanism in cordylid lizards: a theoretical and field test.

Abstract:The hypothesis that low skin reflectance (melanism) provides an advantage for thermoregulation under cold conditions has received mixed support in ectothermic vertebrates. We selected a model system, three allopatric closely related species of cordylid lizards that differ in skin reflectance, to test this hypothesis. Cordylus niger and Cordylus oelofseni are melanistic and inhabit peninsular and montane areas, respectively, whereas Cordylus cordylus is more widespread and inhabits low inland areas. By combining theoretical, experimental, and field data on these species, we demonstrate that the difference in body temperature (T(b)) between melanistic and non-melanistic lizards under ecologically relevant climate variation ranged from 0 degrees to 2 degrees C. Despite its small magnitude, however, the faster heating rate and higher T(b) of melanistic species relative to non-melanistic species conferred an advantage under cold conditions. Comparison of habitat thermal quality (d(e)) and thermal accuracy (d(b)) across species indicated that, in winter, melanism conferred the greatest advantage during small windows of thermal opportunity. This finding was most pronounced for C. oelofseni, which is most constrained by cold temperatures in its habitat. By contrast, due to their rock-dwelling habits, melanistic and non-melanistic species benefited from rock refugia in summer, giving similar levels of thermoregulatory effectiveness across species, regardless of skin reflectance. This study therefore demonstrates that skin reflectance variation across cordylids has significant effects on their thermal balance. Furthermore, studies investigating the role of varying skin reflectance in field populations and species should incorporate fine and broad temporal scales (daily, monthly, and seasonal), environmental variability, and cost-benefit trade-offs of thermoregulation.
Early maladaptive schemas and borderline personality disorder features in a nonclinical sample: A network analysis

Abstract:Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a challenging problem. Early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) are considered as important vulnerability factors for the development and maintenance of BPD. Literature suggests a complex relationship between BPD and EMSs. The current study employed network analysis to model the complex associations between central BPD features (i.e., affective instability, identity problems, negative relations, and self-harm) and EMSs in 706 undergraduate students. The severity of BPD symptoms was assessed using the Personality Assessment Inventory-Borderline subscale; the Young Schema Questionnaire-Short Form was used to assess EMSs. Results suggest that specific EMSs show unique associations with different BPD features. Interestingly, affective instability showed no unique associations with EMSs. Identity problems were uniquely associated with abandonment, insufficient self-control, dependence/incompetence, and vulnerability to harm/illness schemas. Negative relations in BPD showed unique connections with mistrust/abuse and abandonment. Finally, BPD self-harm was connected to emotional deprivation and failure. These findings indicate potential pathways between EMSs and specific BPD features that could improve our understanding of BPD theoretically and clinically.

Abstract:Dissociation is a multifaceted phenomenon that occurs in various mental disorders, including borderline personality disorder (BPD), but also in non-clinical populations. Severity of childhood trauma (abuse, neglect) plays an important role in the development of dissociation and BPD. However, the complex interplay of different dissociative symptoms, BPD features, and self-reported childhood trauma experiences is not yet fully understood. Graph-theoretical network analysis can help to better understand such multivariate interrelations. Objective: This study aimed to investigate associations between self-reported dissociation, BPD features, and childhood trauma experiences using a graph-theoretical approach. Data was collected online via international mental health platforms and research sites. N = 921 individuals (77.4% female) were included; 40% reported pathological levels of dissociation. Variables were assessed with established psychometric scales (Dissociative Experiences Scale; Personality Assessment Inventory Borderline Features Scale; Childhood Trauma Questionnaire) and analyzed within a partial correlation network. Positive bivariate correlations between all variables were found. When accounting for their mutual influence on each other, dissociation was predominantly connected to BPD features with effect sizes between rp = .028 and rp = .126, while still showing a slight unique relationship with physical neglect ( rp = .044). Findings suggest close associations between dissociative experiences and BPD features. While childhood trauma plays an important role in the development of dissociation and BPD, its recall may not fully explain their current co-occurrence. Prospective studies are needed to shed more light on causal pathways to better understand which factors contribute to dissociation and its link to BPD (features).

Abstract:Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious mental illness characterized by instability in affective, cognitive, and interpersonal domains. BPD co-occurs with several mental disorders and has robust, positive associations with the general factors of psychopathology (p-factor) and personality disorders (g-PD). Consequently, some researchers have purported BPD to be a marker of p, such that the core features of BPD reflect a generalized liability to psychopathology. This assertion has largely stemmed from cross-sectional evidence and no research to date has explicated the developmental relationships between BPD and p. The present study aimed to investigate the development of BPD traits and the p-factor by examining predictions of two opposing frameworks: dynamic mutualism theory and the common cause theory. Competing theories were evaluated to determine which perspective best accounted for the relationship of BPD and p from adolescence into young adulthood. Data were drawn from the Pittsburgh Girls Study (PGS; N = 2,450) and included yearly self-assessments of BPD and other internalizing and externalizing indices from ages 14 to 21. Theories were examined using random-intercept cross-lagged panel models (RI-CLPMs) and network models. Results indicated that neither dynamic mutualism nor the common cause theory could fully explain the developmental relations between BPD and p. Subtypes of Borderline Personality Features in Adolescence: Insights from Cross-Lagged Panel Network Analysis.

Abstract:Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a complex and severe psychiatric condition characterized by emotional, self-image, behavior, and relational instability. While adult BPD heterogeneity has been extensively studied, the phenomenological borderline personality features (BPFs) in adolescence remain uninvestigated. This study aimed to explore the potentially dynamic causal relationships between BPFs in adolescence and identify the subtypes through cross-lagged panel network (CLPN) analysis. Two independent Chinese adolescent samples were followed over 18 months (N-1 = 1,056, M-1age = 15.37, SD1 = 1.86) and 6 months (N-2 = 723, M-2age = 16.84, SD2 = 0.48) to track BPFs. CLPN modeling was employed to investigate the stability, potential causal relations, and subtypes of adolescent BPFs. The results revealed a relatively stable overall adolescent BPF network structure with some subtle changes over time. Impulsivity emerged as the BPF with the highest out-expected influence, indicating its predictive role for other BPFs. A strong reciprocal causal relationship was observed between impulsivity and affective instability. Based on the CLPN estimation, two distinct BPFs subgroups were spontaneously clustered: externalized-dysregulation subtype (impulsivity, affective instability, and self-harm/suicide) and introjective-disturbance subtype (identity disturbance, chronic emptiness, and stress-related dissociation). The present study tentatively explores a potential typology for adolescent BPF based on these two clusters, which possibly have different pathological mechanisms, and moreover offer insights into the essential construct and clinical intervention of adolescent BPD.

Abstract:Abstract Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is characterized by an increased emotional sensitivity and dysfunctional capacity to regulate emotions. While amygdala and prefrontal cortex interactions are regarded as the critical neural mechanisms underlying these problems, the empirical evidence hereof is inconsistent. In the current study, we aimed to systematically test different properties of brain connectivity and evaluate the predictive power to detect borderline personality disorder. Patients with borderline personality disorder ( n = 51), cluster C personality disorder ( n = 26) and non-patient controls ( n = 44), performed an fMRI emotion regulation task. Brain network analyses focused on two properties of task-related connectivity: phasic refers to task-event dependent changes in connectivity, while tonic was defined as task-stable background connectivity. Three different network measures were estimated (strength, local efficiency, and participation coefficient) and entered as separate models in a nested cross-validated linear support vector machine classification analysis. Borderline personality disorder vs. non-patient controls classification showed a balanced accuracy of 55%, which was not significant under a permutation null-model, p = 0.23. Exploratory analyses did indicate that the tonic strength model was the highest performing model (balanced accuracy 62%), and the amygdala was one of the most important features. Despite being one of the largest data-sets in the field of BPD fMRI research, the sample size may have been limited for this type of classification analysis. The results and analytic procedures do provide starting points for future research, focusing on network measures of tonic connectivity, and potentially focusing on subgroups of BPD.

Abstract:Introduction: This study investigated the structure of the borderline personality features (BPFs) network and the most central BPF in adolescence. Methods: Cross-sectional self-report data from 4,866 Chinese adolescents (M = 13.96, SD = 1.64; 61.3% girls) were included in the network analysis models. BPFs were assessed with the McLean Screening Instrument for Borderline Personality Disorder. Results: Identity disturbance and affective instability emerged as the most central BPF in the current adolescent sample. In addition, chronic emptiness was also found with high centrality. The general networks of BPF were very similar between adolescent boys and girls, although some differences were detected. Discussion: This study further supports the necessity of BPD assessment and diagnosis in adolescence and identifies the distinctive importance of identity and affective dysregulation in the early development of BPD. The findings provide empirical insights into the interconnections of BPF, which resonate with therapeutic mechanisms of evidence-based treatments for BPD. However, the research was limited in its use of a screening measurement rather than a diagnostic tool. Future studies can further explore BPD psychopathology in adolescence with longitudinal data and clinical interviews.

Abstract:Importance: Although borderline personality disorder (BPD)-one of the most common, burdensome, and costly psychiatric conditions-is characterized by repeated interpersonal conflict and instable relationships, the neurobiological mechanism of social interactive deficits remains poorly understood.Objective: To apply recent advancements in the investigation of 2-person human social interaction to investigate interaction difficulties among people with BPD.Design, Setting, and Participants: Cross-brain information flow in BPD was examined from May 25, 2012, to December 4, 2015, in pairs of participants studied in 2 linked functional magnetic resonance imaging scanners in a university setting. Participants performed a joint attention task. Each pair included a healthy control individual (HC) and either a patient currently fulfilling DSM-IV criteria for BPD (cBPD) (n = 23), a patient in remission for 2 years or more (rBPD) (n = 17), or a second HC (n = 20). Groups were matched for age and educational level.Main Outcomes and Measures: A measure of cross-brain neural coupling was computed following previously published work to indicate synchronized flow between right temporoparietal junction networks (previously shown to host neural coupling abilities in health). This measure is derived from an independent component analysis contrasting the time courses of components between pairs of truly interacting participants compared with bootstrapped control pairs.Results: In the sample including 23 women with cBPD (mean [SD] age, 26.8 [5.7] years), 17 women with rBPD (mean [SD] age, 28.5 [4.3] years), and 80 HCs (mean [SD] age, 24.0 [3.4] years]) investigated as dyads, neural coupling was found to be associated with disorder state (η2 = 0.17; P = .007): while HC-HC pairs showed synchronized neural responses, cBPD-HC pairs exhibited significantly lower neural coupling just above permutation-based data levels (η2 = 0.16; P = .009). No difference was found between neural coupling in rBPD-HC and HC-HC pairs. The neural coupling in patients was significantly associated with childhood adversity (T = 2.3; P = .03).Conclusions and Relevance: This study provides a neural correlate for a core diagnostic and clinical feature of BPD. Results indicate that hyperscanning may deliver state-associated biomarkers for clinical social neuroscience. In addition, at least some neural deficits of BPD may be more reversible than is currently assumed for personality disorders.

Abstract:Introduction: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by interpersonal and emotional instabilities, recurring suicidal tendencies, and feelings of emptiness. Childhood adverse event is reported in 70%–80% of cases involving BPD. Furthermore, the deficiency in mentalization capacity plays a significant role in emotion dysregulation and social interaction problems within individuals with BPD. This study explored the relationship among childhood adverse experiences, mentalization capacity, and neurophysiological activity in patients with BPD. Methods: Resting-state electroencephalography was used to identify the neural correlates associated with childhood adversity and mentalization deficits. The participants included 45 patients with BPD and 15 healthy controls. Results: The BPD group exhibited reduced alpha activity during eyes-closed rest, indicating heightened arousal even during relaxation. Correlations were found between the power spectral density (PSD) and mentalization capacity in the delta and theta ranges, suggesting an association between PSD and emotional awareness and expression. Gamma activity negatively correlated with psychic equivalence, implying a blurring of the boundaries between internal mental experiences and the external world. Conclusion: These findings offer insights into the pathophysiology of BPD, provide potential diagnostic markers, and suggest personalized treatment approaches based on mentalization traits.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Bipolar disorder types I (BD I) and II (BD II) behave differently in clinical manifestations, normal personality traits, responses to pharmacotherapies, biochemical backgrounds and neuroimaging activations. How the varied emotional states of BD I and II are related to the comorbid personality disorders remains to be settled. METHODS:We therefore administered the Plutchick - van Praag Depression Inventory (PVP), the Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ), the Hypomanic Checklist-32 (HCL-32), and the Parker Personality Measure (PERM) in 37 patients with BD I, 34 BD II, and in 76 healthy volunteers. RESULTS:Compared to the healthy volunteers, patients with BD I and II scored higher on some PERM styles, PVP, MDQ and HCL-32 scales. In BD I, the PERM Borderline style predicted the PVP scale; and Antisocial predicted HCL-32. In BD II, Borderline, Dependent, Paranoid (-) and Schizoid (-) predicted PVP; Borderline predicted MDQ; Passive-Aggressive and Schizoid (-) predicted HCL-32. In controls, Borderline and Narcissistic (-) predicted PVP; Borderline and Dependent (-) predicted MDQ. CONCLUSION:Besides confirming the different predictability of the 11 functioning styles of personality disorder to BD I and II, we found that the prediction was more common in BD II, which might underlie its higher risk of suicide and poorer treatment outcome.

Abstract:Abstract Both environmental (e.g. interpersonal traumatization during childhood and adolescence) and genetic factors may contribute to the development of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Twin studies assessing borderline personality symptoms/features in the general population indicate that genetic factors underlying these symptoms/features are shared in part with the personality traits of the Five Factor Model (FFM) of personality—the “Big Five”. In the present study, the genetic overlap of BPD with the Big Five -Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism- was assessed. Linkage disequilibrium score regression was used to calculate genetic correlations between a genome-wide association study (GWAS) in central European populations on BPD ( N = 2543) and GWAS on the Big Five ( N = 76,551–122,886, Neuroticism N = 390,278). Polygenic scores (PGS) were calculated to test the association of the genetic disposition for the personality traits with BPD case-control status. Significant positive genetic correlations of BPD were found with Neuroticism ( rg = 0.34, p = 6.3*10 −5 ) and Openness ( rg = 0.24, p = 0.036), but not with the other personality traits (all | rg | <0.14, all p > 0.30). A cluster and item-level analysis showed positive genetic correlations of BPD with the Neuroticism clusters “Depressed Affect” and “Worry”, and with a broad range of Neuroticism items ( N = 348,219–376,352). PGS analyses confirmed the genetic correlations, and found an independent contribution of the personality traits to BPD risk. The observed associations indicate a partially shared genetic background of BPD and the personality traits Neuroticism and Openness. Larger GWAS of BPD and the “Big Five” are needed to further explore the role of personality traits in the etiology of BPD.

Abstract:Long-standing theories of borderline personality disorder (BPD) suggest that symptoms develop at least in part from childhood adversity. Emotion dysregulation may meaningfully mediate these effects. The current study examined three factors related to emotion dysregulation—alexithymia, affective lability, and impulsivity—as potential mediators of the relation between childhood adversity and BPD diagnosis in 101 individuals with BPD and 95 healthy controls. Path analysis compared three distinct models informed by the literature. Results supported a complex mediation model wherein (a) alexithymia partially mediated the relation of childhood adversity to affective lability and impulsivity; (b) affective lability mediated the relation of childhood adversity to BPD diagnosis; and (c) affective lability and impulsivity mediated the relation of alexithymia to BPD diagnosis. Findings suggest that affective lability and alexithymia are key to understanding the relationship between childhood adversity and BPD. Interventions specifically targeting affective lability, impulsivity, and alexithymia may be particularly useful for this population.

Identifying Bridge Symptoms Between Borderline Personality Disorder and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Network Analysis From a National Cohort

Abstract:Objective: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) share common risk factors, including exposure to traumatic events. We aim to estimate networks of DSM-IV BPD and PTSD to describe the interactions between the symptoms of these 2 disorders and identify bridging symptoms between the 2 diagnoses that may play critical roles in their co-occurrence. Methods: We performed a network analysis of data from the second wave of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC 2004-2005), a nationally representative sample of the US adult population. We calculated network stability using a bootstrap method and centrality measures for each symptom across 3 different network estimations. Results: The networks were very stable. The symptom "chronic feelings of emptiness" was the most central in the BPD network. The symptoms "feeling of intense fear or horror" and "recurrent and intrusive memories of the traumatic event" were the most central in the PTSD network. The symptoms "self aggression," "severe dissociation," "chronic feelings of emptiness," and "feelings of detachment" had significantly higher bridge expected influence than most other symptoms in the network in both the full sample and the subsample of participants who responded to all PTSD and BPD symptoms. Conclusion: Self-aggression, chronic feelings of emptiness, dissociation symptoms, and feelings of detachment represent bridge symptoms between BPD and PTSD. These symptoms could potentially trigger and perpetuate the manifestations of one disorder in the presence of the other. Targeting these symptoms might allow better prevention and management of both disorders.
Individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder Show Larger Preferred Social Distance in Live Dyadic Interactions

Abstract:Personal space (PS) regulation is a key component of effective social engagement. PS varies among individuals and is regulated by brain circuits involving the amygdala and the frontoparietal network. Others have reported that simulated PS intrusions suggest larger preferred interpersonal distance (PID) and a central role of amygdala hyperactivity in PS regulation in Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). This study is the first report of live interpersonal distance preferences and relation to specific symptoms in BPD. We found a 2-fold larger PID in BPD than control (n=30, n=23). There were no significant differences in PID in BPD subject by medication status or pre-study diagnosis, and no significant correlations between PID and intensity of BPD, mood, anxiety, impulsive, or psychotic symptoms. In summary, PID is larger in BPD than control subjects. Unexpectedly, BPD subject PID did not differ in by medication status and did not correlate with intensity of any of the symptom types tested. We discuss these findings in context of severe attachment disturbances in BPD and the relationship between metaphoric social distance in the attachment framework. Future work is needed to identify neural circuits underlying PS regulation in BPD, individual differences in attachment, and relationship to symptom trajectory.
