Abstract:Background: Results of numerous studies show that major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with a chronic low-grade inlfammaiton, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Aim: To compare the results of blood cell analysis of MDD paitents with healthy controls, and explore the potenital value of it as an indicator of immune-inlfammaiton in MDD, especially the mean platelet volume. Methods: 103 MDD paitents and 106 healthy controls with matched age and gender were recruited. We collected peripheral blood samples from both groups and gathered basic data. For comparison of normally distributed data (age, body mass index, lymphocyte count, white blood cell count, red blood cell count, hematocrit, platelet count and mean corpuscular volume) between groups, single t-test were used; and for comparison of non-normally distributed data (Neutrophil count, neutrophil count, platelet/lymphocyte raito, hemoglobin, red blood cell distribuiton width, mean platelet volume, mean hemoglobin concentraiton, mean hemoglobin and platelet distribuiton width), we used Mann-Whitney U-test. Results: Compared with healthy controls, the MDD groups showed significantly higher white blood cell count (F=0.443,p=0.004), plateletcrit (F=8.3,p<0.001), neutrophil and lymphocyte ratio (Z=-6.063, p<0.001), neutrophil count (Z=-5.062,p<0.001), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (Z=-2.469,p=0.014), red blood cell distribuiton width (Z=-2.481,p=0.013) and mean platelet volume (Z=-2.668,p=0.008). In addition they had significantly lower hemoglobin (Z=-3.876,p<0.001), mean hemoglobin amount (Z=-3.005,p=0.003), red blood cell count (F=0.248,p<0.001), lymphocyte count (F=3.826,p=0.004) and hematocrit (F=0.000, p>0.001). Conclusions: The results suggest that serum inflammatory response probably exists in people with MDD, and indicators of blood analysis especially mean platelet volume have a potential value as biomarker for inflammaiton.

Abstract:Objectives: To investigate the association between Cd exposure and depressive symptoms in Chinese young adults. And to investigate the potential metabolic changes associated with high blood Cd concentrations. Methods: We conducted a cohort study in 2019 and 2021. Blood Cd and depressive symptoms were collected during baseline and follow-up. The nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) scores were used to assess depressive symptoms. We used the generalized linear mixed model to estimate the association between blood Cd levels and depressive symptoms. A metabolomic and lipidomic analysis based on liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry was conducted on a total of 679 blood samples. The metabolomic data were analyzed using variance analysis and linear mixed effects models. Results: Blood Cd concentrations were significantly associated with increased severity of depression symptoms [odds ratio (OR) 2.07, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.04-4.11]. Metabolomics analysis found 93 metabolites with significant statistical differences between the lowest blood Cd level group and the highest Cd level group. Among the 93 differential metabolites, 17 were enriched in 7 differential metabolic pathways. Conclusions: Blood Cd was associated with increased severity of depression symptoms in Chinese young adults. Cd exposure may affect depressive symptoms by inducing oxidative stress, inflammation, and disrupting amino acid metabolism.
Psycho-social factors associated with high depressive symptomatology in female adolescents and gender difference in adolescent depression: an epidemiological survey in China’s Hubei Province

Abstract:Abstract Background Exploring etiological clues to adolescent depression, especially in female adolescents, might be helpful to improve the social environment of female adolescents. The aim at this study is to explore psycho-social factors of female adolescents with high depressive symptomatology and gender differences in depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents. Method We examined 4100 adolescents from Wuhan city and Jianli county via a cross-sectional study. Depressive symptomatology was screened through the Chinese version of Center for Epidemiology Studies Depression Scale. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to explore the factors related to high depressive symptomatology in female and male adolescents, respectively. Results The prevalence of high depressive symptomatology in female and male were 38.9 and 30.2% respectively. The psycho-social factors of high depressive symptomatology in female adolescents were age (Adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.201, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.076 ~ 1.341), single parent family (aOR = 2.004, 95%CI, 1.448 ~ 2.772) and fathers’ education level (compared to primary school and below, [Junior middle school, aOR = 0.641, 95%CI, 0.439 ~ 0.934; Senior middle school, aOR = 0.603, 95%CI, 0.410 ~ 0.888; College degree and above, aOR = 0.639, 95%CI, 0.437 ~ 0.936]). Conclusion Fathers’ education level was associated with high depressive symptomatology in female adolescents. Female adolescents whose father with primary school education or below deserves more attention. Further epidemiologic researches need to be conducted to explore the different risk factors between female and male adolescents in China.

Abstract:Inflammatory mechanisms may play crucial roles in the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder (MDD), and cytokine concentrations are correlated with brain alterations. Adolescents and young adults with MDD have higher recurrence and suicide rates than adults, but there has been limited research on the underlying mechanisms. In this study, we aimed to investigate the potential correlations among cytokines, depression severity, and the volumes of the amygdala, hippocampus, and nucleus accumbens in Han Chinese adolescents and young adults with first-episode MDD. Nineteen patients with MDD aged 10–21 years were enrolled from the Psychiatry Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, along with 18 age-matched healthy controls from a local school. We measured the concentrations of interleukin (IL)-4, IL-6, IL-8, and IL-10 in the peripheral blood, along with the volumes of the amygdala, hippocampus, and nucleus accumbens, as determined by magnetic resonance imaging. We observed that patients with MDD had higher concentrations of IL-6 and a trend towards reduced left amygdala and bilateral hippocampus volumes than healthy controls. Additionally, the concentration of IL-6 was correlated with the left amygdala volume and depression severity, while the left hippocampus volume was correlated with depression severity. This study suggests that inflammation is an underlying neurobiological change and implies that IL-6 could serve as a potential biomarker for identifying early stage MDD in adolescents and young adults.

Determinants of depressive symptoms at individual, school and province levels: a national survey of 398,520 Chinese children and adolescents

Abstract:Objectives The aims of this study were to describe the national distribution of depressive symptoms in Chinese children and adolescents, to examine the determinants of depressive symptoms at individual, school and province levels and to assess the gender and age differences in the effect of school factors on depressive symptoms. Study design This was a national cross-sectional study. Methods A school-based online survey was conducted in mainland China from between December 1, 2021, and January 1, 2022. A total of 398,520 eligible participants were included in the analysis. School-level data were drawn from students, headteachers and Baidu Maps, and province-level data were obtained from the national human development report. The Patient Health Questionnaire-2 was used to measure depressive symptoms. Results Areas with the highest mean scores for depressive symptoms were in the northeastern, inner central and southwestern regions of China. At the individual level, younger age, male sex, being an only child, Han ethnicity, lower body mass index, more days of exercise, less drinking and smoking behaviours, higher subjective family socio-economic status (SES) and popularity in school were related to fewer depressive symptoms; however, objective family SES and maternal education were not related to fewer depressive symptoms. The school-level variables of public status, psychological activities and psychological courses and province-level variable of higher Human Development Index were associated with fewer depressive symptoms. The effect of psychological courses and activities on depressive symptoms was greater in females. Conclusions The results showed multilevel factors related to depressive symptoms and emphasised the importance of implementing school-based psychological activities to ameliorate depressive symptoms in Chinese children and adolescents across age and gender.

Various studies indicate pro-inflammatory activity in adolescent depression; however, there is an almost complete lack of findings about IRS and CIRS balance. Thus, we aimed to assess different IRS and CIRS indices, profiles, and IRS/CIRS ratios in drug-naïve MDD patients at adolescent age, with respect to sex. Patients and Methods: One hundred MDD adolescents (40 boys, average age: 15.4± 1.2 yrs.) and 60 controls (28 boys, average age: 15.3± 1.5 yrs.) were examined. Evaluated parameters were 1. plasma levels of interleukin (IL)-1α, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, interferon gamma, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), soluble receptor of IL-6 (sIL-6R), soluble receptors of TNF-α (sTNF-R1, sTNF-R2); 2. profiles: IL-6 trans-signaling, M1 macrophage signaling, helper T lymphocytes (Th) 1 profile, regulatory T lymphocytes (Treg)+Th2, allIRS, and allCIRS; 3. IRS vs CIRS activity ratios: TNF-α/TNF-R1, TNF-α/TNF-R2, TNF-α/sTNF-Rs (ie sTNF-R1+sTNF-R2), Th1/Th2, Th1/Treg, Th1/Th2+Treg, M1/Th2, M1/Treg, M1/Treg+Th2, allIRS/allCIRS. Results: MDD patients showed increased IL-4, IL-10, TNF-α, sIL-6R, Treg+Th2, allIRS, allCIRS, and TNF-α/sTNF-Rs, and decreased Th1/Th2+Treg. MDD females showed increased IL-10 and TNF-α compared to control females. MDD males showed increased IL-4, IL-10, sIL-6R, Treg+Th2, and TNF-α/TNF-R1 compared to control males. Increased sTNF-R1 was found in MDD males compared to MDD females. Positive correlations were found between CDI score and sIL-6R and IL-10 in the total group and between CDI score and IL-10 in adolescent males. Conclusion: Our study for the first time extensively evaluated IRS and CIRS interactions revealing enhanced pro-inflammatory TNF-α signaling and IL-6 trans-signaling in association with increased IL-10- and IL-4-mediated anti-inflammatory activity in first-episode depression at the adolescent age. Moreover, results reflect the sex-specific simultaneous activation of IRS and CIRS pathways in adolescent depression. Exploring the relationship between sleep patterns and depression among Chinese middle school students: a focus on sleep quality vs. sleep duration

Abstract:Objective: This study aims to explore the relationship between sleep patterns and depressive symptoms among adolescents, examining variations in depressive symptoms across different sleep qualities, durations, and habits. Method: A cross-sectional survey was conducted, gathering data from 8,775 Chinese adolescents on their demographics, lifestyle habits, sleep quality and duration, and depressive symptoms. The association between sleep parameters and depressive symptoms was analyzed using multivariate logistic regression. Findings: The findings reveal a significant correlation between sleep quality/duration and depressive symptoms. Specifically, adolescents with poor sleep quality had higher depressive scores (mean score = 14.62, standard deviation = 5.71), significantly exceeding those with better sleep quality (mean score = 11.54, standard deviation = 4.69). Adolescents with shorter sleep duration also showed significantly higher depressive scores than those with moderate sleep duration. Importantly, adolescents experiencing both poor sleep quality and shorter sleep duration were at a significantly increased risk of depressive symptoms (OR = 4.04, 95% CI: 3.53–4.62, P < 0.001). Further analysis indicated that older age and lower family economic status were independent predictors of a higher risk of adolescent depression (OR = 1.22, 95% CI: 1.08–1.38, P = 0.001), whereas factors such as gender, ethnicity, residence, being an only child, and parental education levels were not statistically significant. Conclusion: Among Chinese adolescents, poor sleep quality and shorter sleep duration are independent predictors of higher depressive symptom scores. Adolescents experiencing both of these conditions simultaneously have a significantly increased risk of depressive symptoms. Furthermore, older age and lower family economic status are also significantly related to an increased risk of depression in adolescents. These findings emphasize the importance of improving sleep quality and optimizing sleep duration for the prevention of adolescent depression. They also suggest the need for a comprehensive approach that addresses the multifaceted factors influencing adolescent mental health, including sleep patterns and socioeconomic disparities.

Abstract:Background: There are bidirectional associations between immunological dysfunction and psychiatric symptoms. However, the associations between the levels of immune cells in the peripheral blood and psychiatric symptoms remain unclear. The present study aimed to evaluate levels of immune cells in peripheral blood in people with positive psychiatric symptoms. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed data from routine blood tests and psychopathology and sleep quality assessments. Data were compared between a group of 45 patients with de novo psychological symptoms and 225 matched controls. Results: Patients with psychiatric symptoms had higher white blood cell and neutrophil counts compared with controls. However, in a subgroup analysis, neutrophil counts were significantly higher than in controls only in patients with multiple psychiatric symptoms. Furthermore, monocyte counts were significantly higher in patients with multiple psychiatric symptoms than in controls. Further, sleep quality was lower in patients with psychiatric symptoms than in controls. Conclusion: White blood cell and neutrophil counts in the peripheral blood of patients with psychiatric symptoms were significantly higher and sleep quality was significantly lower than in controls. Participants with multiple psychiatric symptoms showed more significant differences in peripheral blood immune cell counts than other subgroups. These results provided evidence for the relationship between psychiatric symptoms, immunity, and sleep.

Abstract:Background Inflammation is closely related to poor mental and physical health, including depressive symptoms and its specific symptoms. To reveal the linear and nonlinear relationships between depressive symptoms and chronic inflammation levels, and perform further analysis of the associations between symptom-specificity of depressive symptoms and inflammation among young adults by using a prospective design. Methods In this longitudinal study, we examined college students recruited from two universities in China, who were examined at baseline and 2-years follow-up. Depressive symptoms were measured by applying the Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9) at baseline. Plasma levels of four inflammatory biomarkers, including interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and C reactive protein (CRP) were assayed at baseline and 2-year follow-up. In addition to the conventional generalized linear models, as well as restricted cubic splines were innovatively used to analyze the cross-sectional and longitudinal nonlinear relationships between depressive symptoms and inflammatory biomarkers. Results Generalized linear model analysis revealed that there were no statistical associations between depressive symptoms and any inflammatory biomarker levels. The results of the restricted cubic spline demonstrated a U-shaped nonlinear association between depressive symptoms and ΔIL-1β or ΔTNF-α (changes in baseline and 2-year follow-up), but these associations disappeared after adjusting the confounders. Symptom-specificity of depressive symptoms such as sleeping problems and suicidal ideation were associated with lower IL-1β at baseline or changes in IL-1β levels. Sleeping problems and psychomotor changes at baseline were associated with higher CRP at 2-year follow-up. Suicidal ideation at baseline was associated with changes in TNF-α levels. Conclusion Our findings suggested that symptom-specificity of depressive symptoms was associated with inflammation during a 2-year follow-up at the transition to adulthood. Simultaneously, more research is warranted to seek the directionality of depressive symptoms and chronic inflammation.

Abstract:The biological mechanisms underlying the onset of major depressive disorder (MDD) have predominantly been studied in adult populations from high-income countries, despite the onset of depression typically occurring in adolescence and the majority of the world's adolescents living in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). Taking advantage of a unique adolescent sample in an LMIC (Brazil), this study aimed to identify biological pathways characterizing the presence and increased risk of depression in adolescence, and sex-specific differences in such biological signatures. We collected blood samples from a risk-stratified cohort of 150 Brazilian adolescents (aged 14–16 years old) comprising 50 adolescents with MDD, 50 adolescents at high risk of developing MDD but without current MDD, and 50 adolescents at low risk of developing MDD and without MDD (25 females and 25 males in each group). We conducted RNA-Seq and pathway analysis on whole blood. Inflammatory-related biological pathways, such as role of hypercytokinemia/hyperchemokinemia in the pathogenesis of influenza ( z -score = 3.464, p < 0.001), interferon signaling ( z -score = 2.464, p < 0.001), interferon alpha/beta signaling ( z -score = 3.873, p < 0.001), and complement signaling ( z -score = 2, p = 0.002) were upregulated in adolescents with MDD compared with adolescents without MDD independently from their level of risk. The up-regulation of such inflammation-related pathways was observed in females but not in males. Inflammatory-related pathways involved in the production of cytokines and in interferon and complement signaling were identified as key indicators of adolescent depression, and this effect was present only in females.

Abstract:Evidence in adults suggests that biological and environmental risk factors interact to increase risk for depression and that these might be sex-specific, however less is known in the context of adolescent depression. Our study aimed to identify sex-specific inflammatory markers of increased risk and/or presence of depression in adolescents in Brazil in the context of childhood trauma. 150 adolescents were stratified into: low-risk and high-risk for depression, and currently depressed groups, based on the risk score for depression in adolescence developed by our team. Depression was assessed at baseline and 3-year follow-up using The Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia. Serum cytokines were measured at baseline using Meso Scale Discovery immunoassay. To assess depressive symptoms severity we used The Mood and Feelings Questionnaire, and to assess childhood trauma Cross-sectional analysis showed a significant interaction between biological sex and the risk group for depression on IL-2 levels. In boys, IL-2 was higher in depressed group compared with low-risk group (p=.005). Higher IL-2 in boys partially mediated the relationship between childhood emotional neglect and depressive symptoms in adolescence (b=1.712, [.186, 3.749]). Longitudinal analysis showed that boys who were at high-risk for depression at baseline and transitioned to depression at the 3 year follow-up showed elevated IL-2 levels at baseline compared to those who did not transition (p=.06). Elevated IL-2 levels may be a risk factor for depression in boys which might occur as an aftermath of emotional neglect experienced in early life.

Abstract:Abstract Background Depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms of adolescents not only affect youth but also have wide-ranging impacts on the health of adults. The study was carried out to determine the epidemiological characteristics of depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms and the associations between the two and health-risk behaviors in Chinese adolescents. Methods Participants were recruited from the junior and senior high schools in China. Data were collected by self-designed questionnaires. The questionnaires included questions about demographic characteristics, depressive symptom scales, anxiety symptom scales and nine categories of health-risk behaviors. Descriptive analysis and binary logistic regression were performed by SPSS 21.0 software. Results There were 4.4% of the participants with depressive symptoms. Approximately 32.0% of the participants had anxiety symptoms. Girls and general senior school students were risk factors for depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms. Multiple health-risk behaviors were associated with depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms in Chinese adolescents. Conclusion Depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms were prevalent in Chinese adolescents. Their distribution was affected by certain health-risk behaviors. Multiple health-risk behaviors were associated with depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms in Chinese adolescents.

Abstract:Background Adolescent girls are at higher risk of developing internalizing symptoms than boys, but little is known about mediating factors of sex difference in psychopathology. Internalizing symptoms are thought to be associated with immune system activation, which represents a potential mechanism, given evidence of sex-based differences in inflammation during adolescence. Methods We tested sex differences in inflammatory biomarkers and internalizing symptoms in n=230 community adolescents, aged 11-14. We evaluated internalizing symptoms using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Blood samples were examined for levels of inflammatory biomarkers measured by Meso Scale Discovery (MSD). Results Female participants showed significantly higher levels of internalizing symptoms than males (Mann-Whitney U=7879.5, p<0.005). While females showed significantly lower levels of inflammatory biomarkers than males (lower CRP, IL-2 and IFN-y; Mann Whitney U=2295–2534, p<0.05), female participants aged 14 (n=37) had higher levels of inflammatory biomarkers than males, albeit at trend level. This age group also showed the strongest sex difference in severity of internalizing symptoms (female SDQ mean=22.1, male SDQ mean = 13.5, Mann Whitney U=232, p<0.05). Conclusion Sex differences in both internalizing symptoms and inflammatory biomarker levels in this sample of young adolescents seem to become apparent as age increases. Puberty onset potentially drives both the increase in inflammatory biomarkers and in internalizing symptoms in older female participants. Further longitudinal evaluation in this sample will further investigate how the onset of puberty influences the emergence of internalizing symptoms and immune activation in males and females.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Studies in Western populations find that depression is associated with inflammation and obesity. The present study aimed to evaluate the relation of depressive symptoms with inflammatory factors and adipose-derived adipokines in middle-aged and older Chinese.METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Data were from 3289 community residents aged 50-70 from Beijing and Shanghai who participated in the Nutrition and Health of Aging Population in China project. Depressive symptoms were defined as a Center for Epidemiological Studies of Depression Scale (CES-D) score of 16 or higher. Plasma concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), adiponectin, resistin, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4) were measured. Of the 3289 participants, 312 (9.5%) suffered from current depressive symptoms. IL-6 level was higher in participants with depressive symptoms compared to their counterparts in the crude analyses (1.17 vs. 1.05 pg/mL, p = 0.023) and this association lost statistical significance after multiple adjustments (1.13 vs. 1.10 pg/mL, p = 0.520). Depressive symptoms were not associated with increased mean levels of any other inflammatory factors or adipokines in the unadjusted or adjusted analyses.CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: We found no evidence that depressive symptoms were associated with inflammatory factors and adipokines in the middle-aged and older Chinese populations. Prospective studies and studies in clinically diagnosed patients are needed to confirm our results and clarify the relation of depression with inflammatory factors and adipokines.

Abstract:Importance Depression is associated with alterations in blood immuno-metabolic biomarkers, but it remains unclear whether these alterations are limited to select measures or represent broader patterns and can predict depression diagnosis. Objective To examine immuno-metabolic biomarker changes in depression, pattern of effect at the symptom and symptom-dimension level, and prediction of depression diagnosis. Design, Setting, and Participants Case-control and cohort-wide analyses of ICD-10 depression, depressive and anxiety symptoms based on up to N=4161 participants (2363 female) aged 24 years from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) birth cohort. Exposures Blood-based immunological and metabolic biomarkers (n=93) comprising inflammatory proteins, cell count, lipids, hormones, and metabolites. Main Outcomes and Measures ICD-10 diagnosis of depression, 11 individual depressive and anxiety symptoms, and four domain scores were used as outcomes. Confounders included sex assigned at birth, body mass index, smoking, and alcohol use. Results After adjusting for potential confounders and multiple testing, depression was associated with changes in concentrations of specific immuno-metabolic markers (IL-6, CDCP1, neutrophil count, and insulin), and greater number of extreme-valued inflammatory markers. We identified three distinct affective symptom-related biomarker clusters, including one comprising inflammatory cytokines, chemokines and cells which was positively associated with somatic and mood symptoms, and one comprising liver-related biomarkers which was negatively associated with anxiety symptoms. Then using Partial Least Squares regression we identified two latent variables that capture the biomarker-symptom associations (Component 1: Somatic-Depressive-Inflammation and Component 2: Anxiety-Hepatic). Higher Component 1 score was associated with higher depressive symptom severity consistently over subsequent five years. Immuno-metabolic biomarkers performed poorly in predicting ICD-10 depression (0.569 Balanced Accuracy). However, within depression cases the addition of immuno-metabolic biomarkers improved the prediction of depression with high levels of mood (0.720 Balanced Accuracy) or anxiety symptoms (0.636 Balanced Accuracy). Conclusion and Relevance Depression is associated with disruption in immuno-metabolic homeostasis. Specific patterns of immuno-metabolic biomarkers are associated with differing subsets of affective symptoms, which are potentially relevant for poor depression prognosis. Immuno-metabolic biomarkers improve predictions of high levels of mood symptoms within people with depression, highlighting the symptom-level heterogeneity of depression and opportunities for immuno-metabolic biomarker-based subtyping, prediction, and targeted intervention.

Abstract:Background Depressive symptoms have become one of the most common mental health problems in adolescents. Identifying potential factors associated with adolescent depressive symptoms could be practical and essential for early intervention programs. The association between sleep duration and depressive symptoms in adolescents is inconsistent and needs further exploration. Methods A total of 7330 participants aged 10–19 years were included in this study. Sleep duration was categorized into <7 h, 7–8 h, 8–9 h, and ≥ 9 h per day. The Chinese version of the Center for Epidemiology Scale for Depression was used to assess depressive symptoms. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the association between sleep duration and the risk of depressive symptoms. Restrictive cubic spline analyses were conducted to evaluate the dose–response relationship between sleep duration and depressive symptoms. Results Thirty-four percent of the participants suffered from depressive symptoms. The prevalence of depressive symptoms in adolescents with sleep durations of <7 h, 7–8 h, 8–9 h, and ≥9 h per day was 52.66 %, 37.80 %, 27.55 %, and 20.49 %, respectively. After adjusting for potential covariates, long sleep duration was significantly associated with a decreased risk of depressive symptoms in adolescents. A nonlinear relationship between sleep duration and depressive symptoms was identified. Conclusions Long sleep duration is independently associated with a decreased risk of depressive symptoms in Chinese adolescents.

Abstract:BackgroundThe adverse impact of depressive symptoms on adolescents' physical and psychological health is becoming increasingly prominent. This study aims to examine the association between sleep duration, cognitive function, and depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents.MethodsThis study used data on a sample of 3724 adolescents collected from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS). The multivariate logistic regression was conducted to estimate the association between sleep duration, cognitive function (measured by mathematics and vocabulary), and depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents; the mediating effects of cognitive function were calculated by mediating model.ResultsThe study found that approximately 6.49 % of Chinese adolescents had depressive symptoms, with an average CES-D8 score of 4.27 (SD: 3.11). Adolescents who reported a sleep duration of 75 %) were more likely to be at a lower risk of depressive symptoms. Besides, the cognitive function competitively mediated the effect of sleep duration on depressive symptom (indirect effect = 0.043; 95 % CI = 0.023, 0.064).LimitationsThis is a cross-sectional study; all questions were self-reported; the sleep variable only included the sleep duration.ConclusionsOur study highlights that short sleep duration might increase the risk of depressive symptoms, and increasing cognitive function might reduce the occurrence of depressive symptoms in Chinese adolescents. The results displayed that sleep duration had a negatively direct effect on depressive symptoms, but the indirect effects of sleep duration on depressive symptoms via the cognitive function (i.e., mathematics and vocabulary tests) were significantly positive, indicating that the relationship between sleep duration and depressive symptoms was competitively mediated by cognitive function.
