Abstract:Biomass materials have attracted attention in optimizing electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE) ascribed to their high electric conductivities and reinforced polarization effects. Here, a wood-derived magnetic nanoparticle/porous carbon (PC) composite was fabricated via an in situ microwave-assisted pyrolysis approach. The unique anisotropic porous structures inherited from natural woods act as the three-dimensional conductive network and incorporate the magnetic iron oxide (γ-Fe2O3) nanoparticles homogeneously embedded within the matrixes that can further improve the electromagnetic absorption abilities. As a result, the Fe/PC composites demonstrate an optimized EMI SE of 44.80 dB at the regions of 8.2–12.4 GHz (X-band) with a thickness of 3 mm, while the normalized SE (EMI SE/volume) could reach 61.88 dB/cm3. Meanwhile, the multifunctional characteristics such as low density (0.271 g/cm3), hydrophobicity (water contact angle 132.2°), and mechanical stability (compression strength 11.1 MPa) can be achieved in Fe/PC composites, promising a great potential for future engineering applications.

Abstract:Compositing magnetic loss materials on biomass materials have been evolved as an effective pathway to satisfy the requirement of lightweight and high shielding effectiveness of electromagnetic functional materials. Here, a core–shell-like Ni-coated wood-derived porous carbon composite (Ni/WPC) with anisotropic porous architecture was demonstrated. The three-dimensional WPC structures not only act as the dielectric loss part but also establish a multiple scattering route to eliminate the incident EMW. The nickel-coated shells could serve as the magnetic loss part and meanwhile construct the interfacial polarization through the heterogeneous structures with the WPC skeleton. As a result, an excellent EMI shielding effectiveness of 34.1 dB with a thickness of 2 mm can be realized in Ni/WPC-30 at the X band. Additionally, the Ni/WPC composite possesses an extraordinary flame retardant property, exhibiting excellent service adaptability and which can be extended to other applications.Graphic Abstract

Abstract:Wood is an insulator material, using its porous structure to endow it with efficient microwave absorption and broaden its application range is still a major challenge. Here, wood-based Fe3O4 composites with excellent microwave absorption properties and high mechanical strength were prepared by alkaline sulfite method, in-situ co-precipitation method and compression densification method. The results showed that the magnetic Fe3O4 was densely deposited in the wood cells, and the prepared wood-based microwave absorption composites had both high electrical conductivity, magnetic loss, excellent impedance matching performance and attenuation performance, as well as effective microwave absorption properties. In the frequency range of 2-18 GHz, the minimum reflection loss value was -25.32 dB. At the same time, it had high mechanical properties. Compared with the untreated wood, its modulus of elasticity (MOE) in bending increased by 98.77%, and modulus of rapture (MOR) in bending improved by 67.9%. The developed wood-based microwave absorption composite is expected to be used in electromagnetic shielding fields such as anti-radiation and anti-interference.

Abstract:High-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shields are urgently needed due to the rapid development of modern electronics industry. Herein, biomass-derived highly conductive macroscopic carbon grids (MCGs) were fabricated through the carbonization of wood-pulp fabric matting. The resultant MCGs with thickness of -0.3 mm exhibited not only exceptional EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of -20.3-45.5 dB positively related with their carbonization temperature or negatively associated with their empty grid size, but also semi-transparent characteristic with the transparency of -15%-56% originated from their grid-like configurations. Moreover, an accurate EM model was constructed for the SE simulation of the MCGs in the 3-D full-wave simulation. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the EMI SE of double-layered MCG sample could be conveniently tuned by changing the interleaving degree of the stacked grids through tiny translational motion under constant thickness, showing potential for the design of EM attenuating devices with tunable performance. Abstract:The miniaturization and integration of electronic equipment promote electromagnetic effect radiation pollution more and more serious. The lightweight, renewable electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials is urgently needed. This study developed a high temperature carbonization, Fe 3 O 4 @Graphene impregnation, and electroless Ni technique to construct a carbonized wood composite with strong EMI shielding performance using sustainable natural wood as the raw material. The Fe 3 O 4 @Graphene is distributed throughout the carbonized wood to provide the conductivity and magnetism of the reinforced composite material, and provide more interfaces to increase the dielectric loss and magnetic loss, thereby exhibiting excellent EMI shielding performance. The results show that at low thickness (2 mm) and ultra-low density (0.284 g/cm 3 ), the CWN-7 composite exhibits excellent EMI shielding effectiveness of up to 84.2 dB in the whole X-band (8.2–12.4 GHz). At the same time, it has extraordinary compressive strength and good thermal insulation performance. This study offers a different method for creating composite multifunctional electromagnetic shields out of carbonized green wood.

Abstract:Biomass-derived carbon materials, especially from wood, have attracted great interests in electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding ascribed to their sustainability and unique porous structures. However, it still lacks an effective approach to optimize its shielding performance through the microstructure design. Here, structure nickel encapsulated wood-derived porous carbon (PC) is prepared to improve the EMI shielding performance of porous carbon, in which the high-conductivity nickel shells is obtained through a chemical plating approach. The shielding effectiveness (SE) can reach 83 dB at 9.5 GHz, which is much higher than other reported shielding materials. Experimental results coupled with numerical simulations indicate that the surface and interface electric field distributions could result in a rapid transportation of EM energy and thus enhance the EMI shielding performance. Moreover, the shielding thin films prepared by such microparticles could demonstrate a superior SE of 104.5 dB with a normalized SE of 139.4 dB/mm. Our study opens a new pathway for designing EMI shielding materials based on biomass-derived structural carbon materials.

Abstract:Currently, due to the rapid development of communication technology, electromagnetic interference (EMI) and irradiation have become an emerging environmental pollutant. In this study, hierarchical and porous structured wood was used as the lightweight 3D organic scaffold for the incorporation of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles through in situ mineralization process that endows the woodblock with favorable appearance as well as magnetic and EMI shielding properties. Our two‐step process involves the removal of lignin from natural wood (delignification) via cooking and bleaching followed by inorganic mineralization. The resultant magnetic wood displays an optical brown appearance and possesses typical magnetic hysteresis behavior with a saturation magnetization of 4.5 emu/g for the whole wood. More importantly, the obtained magnetic wood is much lighter than traditional magnetic metal and construable for aerospace and military applications. Notably, the 3 mm thick magnetic wood shows 5∽10 dB (or 7∽10×) enhanced electromagnetic wave attenuation across the X‐band of 8∽12 GHz compared to nonmagnetic wood with the same thickness. The enhanced electromagnetic wave absorption of magnetic wood is mainly due to its enhanced magnetic loss tangent compared to nonmagnetic wood. This work provides an inspiring strategy to develop sustainable, lightweight, and environmentally friendly wood for high functional magnetic applications.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Recently, with the pursuit of high-efficiency electromagnetic wave absorption (EMWA) and electrochemical energy storage (EES) materials, multifunctional lignin-based composites have attracted significant interest due to their low cost, vast availability, and sustainability. In this work, lignin-based carbon nanofibers (LCNFs) was first prepared by electrospinning, pre-oxidation and carbonization processes. Then, different content of magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were deposited on the surface of LCNFs via the facile hydrothermal way to produce a series of bifunctional wolfsbane-like LCNFs/Fe 3 O 4 composites. Among them, the synthesized optimal sample (using 12 mmol of FeCl 3 ·6H 2 O named as LCNFs/Fe 3 O 4 –2) displayed excellent EMWA ability. When the minimum reflection loss (RL) value achieved −44.98 dB at 6.01 GHz with an thickness of 1.5 mm, and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) was up to 4.19 GHz ranging from 5.10 to 7.21 GHz. For supercapacitor electrode, the highest specific capacitance of LCNFs/Fe 3 O 4 –2 reached 538.7 F/g at the current density of 1 A/g, and the capacitance retention remained at 80.3 %. Moreover, an electric double layer capacitor of LCNFs/Fe 3 O 4 –2//LCNFs/Fe 3 O 4 –2 also showed a remarkable power density of 7755.29 W/kg, outstanding energy density of 36.62 Wh/kg and high cycle stability (96.89 % after 5000 cycles). In short, the construction of this multifunctional lignin-based composites has potential applications in electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers and supercapacitor electrodes.

Abstract:Constructing multifunctional characteristics toward advanced electromagnetic interference shielding materials in harsh environments has become a development trend. Herein, the wood-derived magnetic porous carbon composites with a highly ordered anisotropic porous architecture were successfully fabricated through a pyrolysis procedure. The three-dimensional porous skeleton inherited from the wood stock serves as an electrically conductive network and incorporates magnetic Ni nanoparticles homogeneously and firmly embedded within the carbon matrix that can further improve the electromagnetic attenuation capacity. The optimized Ni/porous carbon (PC) composite exhibits an exceptional electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness of 50.8 dB at the whole X band (8.2–12.4 GHz) with a low thickness (2 mm) and an ultralow density (0.288 g/cm3) and simultaneously possesses an extraordinary compressive strength (11.7 MPa) and a hydrophobic water contact angle (152.1°). Abstract:Magnetic nanoparticle-decorated biomass-derived carbon films are intriguing green electromagnetic interference shielding composites because of their eco-friendly, high shielding effectiveness, low reflection loss, etc. However, it is still difficult to uniformly decorate magnetic nanoparticles onto a whole interconnected carbon skeleton. Herein, to overcome this difficulty, a novel in situ coprecipitation approach was developed to construct the 3D Fe 3 O 4 @carbon core-shell network with interconnected magnetic/conductive interfaces. Briefly, common filter papers (CFPs) decorated with metal ions were immersed into ammonia solutions, to in situ generate Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles on whole CFPs. Subsequently, Fe 3 O 4 -decorated CFPs are carbonized to obtain magnetic and conductive biomass-derived carbon films. The novel structure endows the resultant films with excellent electrical conductivity (673-732 S/m), excellent shielding (30.6 dB) and low reflection coefficient ( R = 0.354). The specific SE of our films is as high as 191.3 dB/mm, exceeding that of the reported biomass-derived carbon materials.

Multifunctional sandwich-structured magnetic-electric composite films with Joule heating capacities toward absorption-dominant electromagnetic interference shielding

Abstract:Exploring absorption-dominant high-efficiency electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding composite films accompanied with additional functionalities to broaden their application scenarios is highly desirable for the development of next-generation electronic devices. In this regard, a sandwich-structured EMI shielding composite film with Joule heating performance was fabricated from biomass-based carbon and magnetic-electric hybrid materials through a feasible alternating vacuum-assisted filtration method. Profiting from the rational arrangement of Fe3O4@activated egg white/cellulose nanofiber as impedance matching layer and self-supported MXene as shielding layer, the resultant composite films achieve an optimum EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of 63.8 dB in the X-band with an average electromagnetic reflection as low as 4.8 dB. Meanwhile, the prepared composite films present reliable EMI SE even after undergoing continuously physical deformations, outstanding flexibility, excellent mechanical property and remarkable Joule heating performance. This work paves a novel pathway for developing multifunctional and absorption-dominant EMI shielding composite films in advanced microelectronic systems and flexible electronic devices.

Abstract:In the modern electronic industry, multifunctional polymer composites associated with heat removal and electromagnetic shielding are highly needed. This work reports a method to fabricate epoxy composites with high electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) and thermal conductivity (TC) using natural wood as a starting material via backfilling epoxy into wood-derived carbon scaffolds. The results showed that after carbonization at 1200 °C, the carbon scaffolds could be well-maintained, which could serve as thermally and electrically conductive pathways in the composites. The resultant composites at the carbon loading of 7.0 vol % possessed a high TC of 0.58 W/(m·K), an electrical conductivity of about 12.5 S/m, and an average EMI SE of 27.8 dB over the X-band at the thickness of only 2 mm. Our work proposed a promising strategy to use cost-effective and green materials to fabricate multifunctional polymer composites.

Abstract:With the speedy advancement of wireless communications, electromagnetic wave (EMW) pollution and electromagnetic interference (EMI) are gradually austere, which makes it an urgent need to develop high-performance EMW absorbers and shields. Carbon-based materials are important members of the family of EMW absorbing and shielding materials, due to their satisfactory electrical conductivity, low density, and good corrosion resistance. Especially, wood biomass-derived carbon materials, including carbonized cellulose, lignin and wood monolith, are acclaimed for their rich conductive network, unique porous structure, and effective loading of functional fillers, which promotes high-efficiency EMW absorption and shielding, and provides a new idea for using wood biomass resources in a high-value way. Additionally, due to the high yield of wood biomass, the mass production of carbonized wood biomass-derived EMW absorbers and EMI shields becomes more promising compared with other carbon materials. Hence, relevant studies should be summarized. Meanwhile, the functions of carbon materials need to be clarified and the importance of carbon materials needs to be highlighted. In this review, the roles of wood biomass-derived carbon in various EMW absorbing and shielding materials were emphasized, along with an analysis of related studies. Meanwhile, the main obstacles and the prospects of wood biomass-derived carbon were proposed.

Abstract:The combination of electronic and magnetic shielding materials has been attracted considerable attentions because of the high-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE) produced by the synergetic effects between them. Here, the innovative structural Fe3O4/graphene foam (GF) composite is assembled by magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles anchoring onto the highly electronic conductive 3D GF. The electrical conductivity of the flexible Fe3O4/GF/poly dimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite reaches up to 2.5 S cm(-1). The EMI SE of Fe3O4/GF/PDMS composite (similar to 1.0 mm) increases from similar to 26.6 dB for GF/PDMS composite to similar to 32.4 dB in the frequency range of 8.2-12.4 GHz, which is attributed to the synergistic effect between Fe3O4 nanoparticles and GF. Furthermore, after repeatedly bending for 10000 cycles, the EMI SE of the Fe3O4/GF/ PDMS composite still reaches up to 29.4 dB.

Abstract:This work reports ultra‐thin CWF/EP/Co films (120 μm) by a simple two‐step method of hot‐pressing and carbonization. It demonstrates an impressive EMI SE (73 dB) at a 200 μm thickness. The specific EMI shielding effectiveness (SSE/t) of CWF/EP/Co films reaches 15 833.3 dB·cm2·g−1, much higher than other wood‐based materials. Moreover, CWF/EP/Co films exhibit favorable EM absorbing properties and effective Joule heating performance. Recently, there has been a growing demand for ultra‐thin carbonized wood films (CWF) with high shielding efficiency (SE) to replace non‐renewable alternatives. Researchers aim to enhance electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption and improve electromagnetic interference (EMI) SE in CWF materials to reduce secondary pollution from reflected EM waves. In this work, the carbonized wood composite film (CWF/EP/Co) with a thickness of 120 μm through the process of hot‐pressing and carbonizing wood soaked in a mixed solution of water‐borne epoxy (EP) and Co/Zn‐MOF (ZIF‐67/8) is obtained. The CWF/EP/Co film exhibits excellent conductivity (105 S cm−1) and demonstrates an excellent EMI SE (73 dB) at a 200 μm thickness. Remarkably, the specific EMI shielding effectiveness (SSE/t) of CWF/EP/Co films reached 15833.3 dB·cm2·g−1 in the X‐band, making it the highest reported value among all wood‐derived EMI shielding materials. CWF/EP/Co films have a high absorption coefficient (A) of 0.4, indicating their effectiveness in absorbing EM waves. Furthermore, the EMI shielding effect of the large‐scale wallpaper (170 mm×170 mm) is confirmed by finite element analysis. Additionally, the CWF/EP/Co film exhibits good mechanical properties and effective Joule heating performance. This shielding film shows promise in applications such as buildings and smart homes, providing EMI shielding and warming effects.

Abstract:Conductive polymer composites have become an emerging electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material due to the advantages of light weight, corrosion resistance and low cost. However, low shielding efficiency, high reflectivity and non-biodegradability limit their applications in high-power devices, precision instruments and environmentally friendly fields. In this paper, poly (butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) based EMI shielding composites with three-dimensional hybrid conductive networks as well as magnetic nanoparticles were prepared through the layer by layer coating and hot pressing. Regular PBAT microspheres were synthesized for the first time and used for isolated structure design. The interfacial junctions of the isolation units are composed of in situ synthesized polyaniline (PANI), as well as transition metal carbide (MXene) and CNTs that were adhered by PANI. The synergistic combination of these three conductive fillers promotes the construction of efficient shielding networks. The distribution of Fe 3 O 4 @MWCNT nanoparticles inside the PBAT matrix reduces the reflection of EM waves and weakens the EM radiation energy through magnetic loss. The shielding efficiency of the composites is up to 70.1 dB, and the percentage of reflected EM waves is as low as 26%. These biodegradable polymer-based EMI shielding composites with satisfactory shielding efficiency and low reflection function are expected to be widely used in the next generation of smart and environment-friendly electronic devices.

Conductive Skeleton–Heterostructure Composites Based on Chrome Shavings for Enhanced Electromagnetic Interference Shielding

Abstract:Renewable bio-based electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials receive increasing attention undoubtedly. However, there is still a challenge to use raw biomass materials to construct a significant structure through an effortless and environmental route for EMI shielding applications. Herein, for the first time, we demonstrated a hybrid composite of multi-walled carbon nanotube/polypyrrole/chrome-tanned collagen fiber (MWCNT/PPy/CF), which utilized waste chrome shavings as a matrix. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals that the chromium on the CF has a binding effect on the PPy layer, which endows the tight integration between the CF and PPy layer. After the MWCNT network was loaded on the PPy layer, this ternary structure could provide stable conductive paths and a rich number of polarized interfaces. The MWCNT/PPy/CF composite exhibits superior electrical conductivity (354 ± 52 S/m), higher than PPy/CF (222 ± 38 S/m) and MWCNT/CF (104 ± 11 S/m), owing to the synergy of dual conductive structures. Notably, the shielding effectiveness (SE) value of the MWCNT/PPy/CF composite reaches 30 dB in the X band at a thickness of 0.48 mm. The shielding effectiveness of reflection (SER) (9.1 dB) is similar to that of PPy/CF (8.2 dB), while the shielding effectiveness of absorption (SEA) is significantly improved from 15.3 dB (PPy/CF) to 20.4 dB (MWCNT/PPy/CF) due to the additional coverage of the MWCNT network. This indicates the synergy between the MWCNT network and conductive PPy/CF skeleton. This work provided a method to prepare sustainable and low-cost renewable EMI shielding materials using chrome shavings. Abstract:Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials are of vital importance in solving increasingly serious electromagnetic pollution. Currently, metal-based EMI shielding materials (ESMs) are ubiquitously used, however, their drawbacks of high density, low corrosion resistance, and poor flexibility restrict their application scenarios. By contrast, polymer-based composite materials have superior properties such as light weight, great shock absorption performance, and high corrosion resistance, which makes them promising electromagnetic interference shielding materials. In this work, an asymmetric network of the impedance matching layer and conductive shielding layer is constructed by coupling carbon fiber cloth (CFC) with magnetic porous poly(aryl ether nitrile) (PEN) polymer composite. Scanning electron microscopy confirms the alternating layered structure of the composites and the porous structure of the polymer layer. The unique designed composites achieve the highest EMI total shielding effectiveness (SET) of 37.76 dB and absorption shielding effectiveness (SEA) of 35.33 dB, which represents the successful preparation of a type of EMI material following an absorption-dominated mechanism. The CFC-3/PEN-Fe3O4 @PEI-25 demonstrates a satisfying EMI-SE/density/thickness (SSE/t) value of 543 dB·cm2·g−1, higher than most porous polymer-based EMI composites currently. In addition, the mechanical strength of composites is enhanced due to the unique alternating multilayered structure, with the highest tensile strength of 39.03 MPa, which is much higher than the obtained porous PEN membranes via the non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPs) method. This work proposes a novel approach to the construction of lightweight and resistant to secondary contamination ESMs with high performance, exerting enormous potential for wide application.
