Abstract:Positive health endpoints are not the opposite of negative endpoints. Previous studies examining posttraumatic stress disorders (PTSD) and posttraumatic growth (PTG) trajectories have overlooked the co-existence of PTSD and PTG, making it difficult to accurately distinguish individuals with various posttraumatic presentations, causing the effects of targeted interventions to be discounted. To fill this gap, the current study sought to examine joint PTSD and PTG trajectories in children and adolescents. Eight hundred and seventy-six Chinese children and adolescents were recruited to complete self-report questionnaires 6, 12, and 18 months after the Ya'an earthquake. Multiple-process growth mixture modeling analysis was used to test the study proposal. Five distinct joint PTSD and PTG trajectory types were found: recovery, growth, struggling, resistant, and delayed symptoms. Female students and students who felt trapped or fearful were more likely to be in the struggling group, and students who experienced injury to themselves or family members were more likely to belong to the delayed symptom group. These findings suggest that postdisaster psychological services should be provided to relieve delayed symptoms in individuals who experience injury to themselves or their family members, and individuals in the struggling group should be supported to achieve growth.
Post‐traumatic Growth and Related Factors among 1221 Chinese Cancer Survivors

Abstract:Objective There is an increasing number of studies on the post-traumatic growth (PTG) of cancer survivors worldwide. However, few Chinese studies have reported about PTG in cancer survivors because of the underdevelopment of community health services. This study aimed to evaluate the level of PTG in China and explore related factors among a large sample of survivors of more than 12 cancer types. Methods We recruited 1236 survivors from 14 sites of the Beijing Cancer Rehabilitation Association. Survivors completed standardized questionnaires assessing PTG, social support, coping styles, demographic characteristics, and clinical conditions. Multivariate linear regression was used to evaluate potential predictive factors of PTG. Results A total of 1221 (98.7%) subjects completed the questionnaires. The average PTG score was 61.15 +/- 20.26. Seven variables were included in the final regression model: social support, coping style, time after treatment, exercise, BMI, work status, and economic income (P < .05). Survivors who had low levels of social support, had negative coping strategies, had a time after treatment of less than 5 years, exercised irregularly, had an abnormal BMI, were unemployed, or had low economic income had lower PTG levels. Conclusions PTG levels among Chinese cancer survivors are associated with social support, coping style, time after treatment, exercise, BMI, work status, and economic income. Strategies tailored to Chinese survivors should be developed to promote their PTG and improve their physical and psychological well-being.

Abstract:Journal of Health Psychology, Ahead of Print. This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the subgroups of posttraumatic growth (PTG) among young and middle-aged cancer patients in China and to explore influencing factors. A total of 378 young and middle-aged cancer patients aged 18–60 were selected for the study at a hospital in Shanghai, China. Latent profile analysis identified four categories of PTG among young and middle-aged cancer patients: the "predicament group" (5.9%), the "struggle group" (36.8%), the "limited growth group" (44.1%) and the "remarkable growth group" (13.2%). Age, gender, time since diagnosis, cancer site, primary/recurrence, and meaning in life significantly influenced the distribution of PTG in young and middle-aged cancer patients. Targeted interventions should be developed to enhance the level of PTG among this population, considering the specific characteristics and influencing factors within each profile.

Abstract:ObjectiveThe current longitudinal study aims to examine the bidirectional relationship between post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and post-traumatic growth (PTG).MethodOne hundred twenty-two adults in the most severely affected area were investigated by self-report questionnaires at 12 months and 18 months after the Wenchuan Earthquake occurred in China.ResultsThe autoregressive cross-lagged structure equation analysis revealed that PTG at 12 months post-earthquake could negatively predict PTSS at 18 months post-earthquake above and beyond PTSS stability, whereas PTSS at 12 months post-earthquake could not significantly predict subsequent PTG. Moreover, PTG at 12 months post-earthquake could predict fewer subsequent intrusions, numbing and hyper-arousal symptoms but not avoidance symptoms.ConclusionGrowth can play a role in reducing long-term post-traumatic stress symptoms, and the implication of a positive perspective in post-trauma circumstance is discussed.
Relationship between self-psychological adjustment and post-traumatic growth in patients with lung cancer undergoing chemotherapy: a cross-sectional study

Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to determine the potential profiles of self-psychological adjustment in patients with lung cancer undergoing chemotherapy, including sense of coherence (SOC) and positive cognitive emotion regulation (PCER). The relationship between these profiles with post-traumatic growth (PTG) and the relevant factors of self-psychological adjustment in different profiles was analysed. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Patients with lung cancer undergoing chemotherapy in China. Participants: A total of 330 patients with lung cancer undergoing chemotherapy were recruited out of which 321 completed the questionnaires effectively. Methods: Latent profile analysis was used to identify self-psychological adjustment classes based on the two subscales of the Sense of Coherence Scale and Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire. One-way analysis of variance and multinomial logistic regression were performed to examine the subgroup association with characteristics and PTG. Results: Three latent profiles of self-psychological adjustment were identified: low level (54.5%), high SOC-low PCER (15.6%) and high PCER (29.9%). The results of univariate analysis showed a significant difference in PTG scores among different self-psychological adjustment subgroups (F=11.55, p<0.001). Patients in the high-PCER group were more likely living in urban areas (OR=2.41, 95% CI 1.17 to 4.97, p=0.02), and time since cancer diagnosis was ≥6 months and <1 year (OR=3.54, 95% CI 1.3 to 9.64, p<0.001). Conclusion: This study revealed that most patients with lung cancer undergoing chemotherapy belonged to the low-level group. Three profiles are associated with PTG. There were differences in characteristics between patients treated with chemotherapy for lung cancer in the high-PCER and low-PCER groups. Thus, these profiles provide useful information for developing targeted individualised interventions based on demographic characteristics that would assist PTG in patients with lung cancer undergoing chemotherapy.
The Latent Transition of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Growth among Adolescents Surviving Jiuzhaigou Earthquake.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:Knowledge of longitudinal changes in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and posttraumatic growth (PTG) may help survivors recover better. Yet, researchers dispute the population-based typologies of PTSD and PTG as well as the temporal transition between these subpopulations across time, especially among adolescents. Thus, the transition pattern still needs further research. Besides, parent-child factors (parenting styles, parent-child cohesion, and parental attachment styles) may influence the transition, but it keeps unclear. In the study, we aimed to solve these questions. METHOD:A three-wave investigation was conducted among 620 adolescents, 12 months, 21 months, and 27 months, after the Jiuzhaigou earthquake by using self-report measures on PTSD, PTG, and parent-child factors at the three time points. Finally, 339 of them finished the three-wave investigation. RESULTS:Latent profile analysis models showed that three heterogeneous classes of PTSD and PTG existed across time: low-affected (low-level PTSD and PTG), thriving (low-level PTSD but high-level PTG), and struggling (high-level PTSD and PTG) groups. Random intercept latent transition analysis model suggested that samples mainly stayed in the original classes across time, with three main transitional paths: from struggling group to thriving group, from thriving group to low-affected group, and from low-affected group to struggling group. Besides, the study also found that parental rejection, overprotection, and anxious attachment were the possible factors that kept the stability of the struggling group. Parent-child cohesion increased the stability of the thriving group across time. Anxious attachment may worsen PTSD among adolescents and lower the stability of low-affected groups across time. CONCLUSIONS:Coexisting and transitional patterns exist in PTSD and PTG across time. Wrong parenting styles and insecure attachments can exacerbate PTSD symptoms and diminish adolescents' resilience, but parent-child cohesion can facilitate their growth after trauma. Abstract:ObjectiveThe diagnosis of cancer is an adverse event; nevertheless, it can also exert positive changes on survivors, such as posttraumatic growth (PTG). This review aims to integrate researches on PTG in colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors, including manifestations and prevalence of PTG, factors associated with PTG and interventions on PTG. MethodsA systematic search was implemented on six databases to identify studies on PTG in CRC survivors published in English or Chinese from October 1995 to May 2022. We also performed a manual search for additional studies from the article reference lists. ResultsThirty-one studies were included. The results were integrated based on the PTG theoretical framework and PTG affective-cognitive processing model. PTG manifests in CRC survivor-caregiver dyads in five domains, including personal growth, appreciation of life, relating to others, new possibilities and spiritual change. Factors correlated with PTG can be integrated into levels of personality, event cognitions, appraisal mechanisms, emotional states, coping and social environmental context. Elements of interventions can be integrated according to the affective-cognitive processing PTG model. Existing interventions are effective in promoting PTG in CRC survivors. ConclusionWe provide a systematic perspective on studies targeting PTG in CRC survivors. PTG manifested in survivor-caregiver dyads. Factors associated with PTG in CRC survivors are significant, and the interventions are effective. An intervention programme based on the affective-cognitive processing model and focused on CRC survivor-caregiver dyads would be significant for the dyads facing cancer.

Abstract:Objectives. Only a few studies have explored the association between social support and resilience, coping style, and posttraumatic growth (PTG) in breast cancer. The current research aimed to identify the latent subtypes of social support in patients with breast cancer (BC) who underwent surgery. Moreover, the mediating role of resilience and the moderating role of coping style were investigated. Methods. This cross-sectional study enrolled 115 patients from Be Resilient to Breast Cancer between September 2021 and April 2022 using the convenience sampling method. Then, the Perceived Social Support Scale, Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale, Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire, and Posttraumatic Growth Inventory were utilized. A latent profile analysis and a moderated mediation analysis were performed. Results. Three subtypes of social support were identified as low (16.5%), middle (53.0%), and high (30.4%). Social support, resilience, and coping style were found to be positively associated with PTG (r = 0.373, P 0.05). Conclusions. Heterogeneous subgroups of social support have been identified in patients with BC. Resilience significantly mediates the association between social support and PTG. Meanwhile, coping style does not significantly moderate the association between resilience and PTG.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to examine the longitudinal relationships between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and posttraumatic growth (PTG) among adolescent survivors of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake in China. The participants in our study included 245 adolescent survivors who were randomly selected from several primary and secondary schools in the counties of Wenchuan, which are the areas most severely affected by the Wenchuan earthquake. Participants completed the Revised Child PTSD Symptom Scale and the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI) at 3.5 years after the earthquake (T1), 4.5 years after the earthquake (T2), and 5.5 years after the earthquake (T3). The results found that PTSD reported in T1 and T2 predicted subsequent PTG reported at T2 and T3 and that PTG did not predict PTSD from T1 to T3. In addition, the cross-sectional correlation between PTSD and PTG weakened from T1 to T3. These results indicate that PTSD and PTG can coexist in individuals after a traumatic experience, and they further suggest that the reduction in PTSD does not indicate the appearance of PTG.
Exploring the developmental changes in and the relationship between resilience and anxiety and depression in older gastric cancer survivors: A latent growth mixture model and random intercept cross‐lagged panel model analysis

Abstract:Objectives This study aims to investigate the independent and joint trajectories of resilience, anxiety, and depression symptoms and research the interaction between older gastric cancer survivors' resilience and anxiety–depression during the period of 1 year after surgery. Methods The participants were 381 older gastric cancer survivors, with a mean age of 69 years. Resilience, anxiety, and depression symptoms were assessed immediately after surgery, and at 3, 6, and 12 months post‐surgery, respectively. A longitudinal design was employed to capture the dynamic changes in resilience, anxiety, and depression levels among older gastric cancer survivors post‐surgery. Latent growth mixture model and random intercept cross‐lagged panel model were used to analyse the trajectories of resilience and anxiety–depression and the interaction between them. Results Two latent trajectories were identified for the resilience, four latent trajectories were identified for the anxiety, and five latent trajectories were identified for the depression, respectively, with three joint trajectories identified: gradual‐increasing resilience, gradual‐decreasing anxiety, and depression group (10.0%); gradual‐decreasing resilience, gradual‐increasing anxiety, and depression group (21.2%); and rapid‐growth resilience, rapid‐decline anxiety, and depression group (68.8%). Resilience among older gastric cancer survivors exhibits significant bidirectional and negative predictive effects on anxiety and depression. Conclusions Individual differences in resilience, anxiety, and depression trajectories exist among older gastric cancer survivors, with heterogeneous joint progression patterns, and the relationship between resilience and anxiety–depression appears bidirectional. More sophisticated intervention programmes tailored to the unique characteristics of the relevant trajectories are necessary to enhance resilience and mitigate the risk of anxiety and depression.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to examine the mediating role recovery plays in the relationship between resilience and posttraumatic growth (PTG) among breast cancer patients. Methods A cross-sectional study design was implemented between January 02, 2021 and April 29, 2021. A total of 789 breast cancer patients from eight hospitals in Liaoning province were selected for participation in this study. These participants completed questionnaires, which included the Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory, EGO Resilience Scale and the Questionnaire about the Process of Recovery. The associated factors of PTG were analyzed using hierarchical multiple regression (HMR). The proposed relationships among resilience, recovery, and PTG were checked by structural equation modeling (SEM) analyses. Results The average PTG score of breast cancer patients was 53.00 ± 28.30. PTG was positively correlated with both recovery and PTG ( a * b = 0.1, BCa95% CI: 0.154 ∼ 0.054). Conclusion Breast cancer patients were found to exhibit a moderate degree of PTG. Resilience was positively associated with PTG and recovery mediated the positive effect of resilience on PTG. Resilience might serve as a crucial protective factor that could explain positive growth in life-threatening illnesses through the mediating path of recovery.

Abstract:AbstractPurposeTo identify factors associated with posttraumatic growth (PTG) of head-and-neck cancer squamous cancer (HNC) patients with oncologic emergencies (OE) within the first six months post-treatment.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional study of HNC patients in Taiwan from May 2019 to April 2021 using patient-reported outcomes. Patients were assessed for symptom distress, anxiety, fear of recurrence (FCR), and PTG. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to identify factors associated with PTG. The independent-samples t-test was used to compare PTG and its five specific domains in patients with low FCR, high FCR, low anxiety, and high anxiety.ResultsOf the 114 patients surveyed, 46.5% reported little-to-no PTG, and 53.5% had moderate-to-high PTG. Greater PTG was associated with greater FCR, longer time since OE, less anxiety, having a cancer recurrence, and greater educational attainment. These factors explained 38.6% of the variance in PTG.ConclusionA notable proportion of HNC patients with OE-reported PTG but almost half-reported little-to-no PTG. PTG occurred most in the domain of appreciation of life. The study results also suggest that training patients in coping skills and inviting them to group growth experiences can help them increase PTG and cope with cancer-related psychological threats related to OE.

Abstract:Purpose To characterize patterns of psychological resilience in gastric cancer survivors using latent profile analyses and to explore the factors influencing these latent profiles based on Kumpfer's resilience framework. Methods Five hundred eighty-six gastric cancer survivors were recruited between July 30, 2021, and May 1, 2023. A demographic and clinical characteristics questionnaire, Connor and Davidson′s Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), Fear of Progression Questionnaire Short Form (FoP-Q-SF), General Self-efficacy Scale (GSES), Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire (MCMQ), and Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS) were used for the investigation. Latent profile analysis of the resilience of gastric cancer survivors was conducted, and the factors influencing the latent profiles were explored by multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results A total of 586 questionnaires were collected, and 572 were valid, with an effective recovery rate of 97.61%. The results of latent profile analysis showed that the resilience of gastric cancer survivors was divided into four subgroups, namely, the low-resilience group (18.4%), moderate-resilience group (43.2%), medium-high-resilience group (30.2%), and high-resilience group (8.2%). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that fear of disease progression, self-efficacy, medical coping mode and social support were influencing factors of subgroups. Conclusions Psychological resilience in gastric cancer survivors is individualized. Nurses should assess risk and protective factors for survivor resilience based on Kumpfer's resilience framework, identify unique needs, and develop new approaches and interventions.

Abstract:This study aimed to examine the correlation between post-traumatic growth (PTG), spiritual well-being (SWB), perceived social support (PSS), and demographic and clinical factors in Chinese gynecological cancer patients. Through convenience sampling, we conducted a cross-sectional study of 771 adult patients with gynecological cancer. The European Organization for Research and Treatment for Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Spiritual Well-being 32 (EORTC QLQ-SWB32), Post-traumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) were used to measure SWB, PTG, and PSS. A Multiple Linear Regression Model was used to determine the possible factors contributing to PTG. The subscale with the highest centesimal score in the PTGI was the Appreciation of Life Scale, and the lowest was New Possibility. Gynecologic cancer patients with younger ages (B = − 0.313, P = 0.002), perceived more family support (B = 1.289, P < 0.001), had more existential (B = 0.865, P = 0.010), and had religious belief (B = 5.760, P = 0.034) may have more PTG. Spiritual well-being, perceived social support, younger age, and religious beliefs are associated with post-traumatic growth in gynecological cancer patients. Healthcare staff could provide more professional support to younger patients with religious beliefs. Promoting social support and spiritual well-being could potentially serve as effective interventions for boosting PTG among gynecological cancer.

Structural equation modeling was used to build a model explaining PTG.RESULTS: Structural equation modeling results indicated that higher levels of social support predicted higher levels of adaptive coping, higher levels of uncontrollability appraisal predicted lower levels of adaptive coping, and higher levels of adaptive coping predicted higher levels of PTG. Moreover, adaptive coping was a mediator between social support and growth, as well as a mediator between uncontrollability and growth. The direct effects of social support and uncontrollability on PTG were insignificant.CONCLUSIONS: The model demonstrated the relationships between social support, uncontrollability appraisal, adaptive coping, and PTG. It could be concluded that uncontrollability appraisal was a required but not sufficient condition for PTG. Neither social support nor uncontrollability appraisal had direct influence on PTG. However, social support and uncontrollability might indirectly influence PTG, through adaptive coping. It implies that both internal factors (eg, cognitive appraisal and coping) and external factors (eg, social support) are required in order for growth to happen.

Post-traumatic growth in oncological patients during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:Background: Post-traumatic growth (PTG) is defined as "positive psychological change experienced as a result of the struggle with highly challenging life circumstances". Diagnosis of cancer leads to many psychological challenges. The recent pandemic forced oncological patients to face other multiple stressors. Resilience is a target of interest for PTG. The aim of this study is to analyze relationships between cancer trauma, COVID-19 pandemic stress, PTG and resilience over time. Participants and procedure: One hundred forty-six patients (124 females, 22 males) in active oncological treatment were enrolled from September 2020: 45.2% (n = 66) diagnosed with gynecological cancer, 23.3% (n = 34) with breast cancer, 15.1% (n = 22) with lung cancer, 16.5% (n = 24) with other cancers. We conducted a prospective longitudinal study on oncological patients evaluated at: diagnosis (T0), 6 (T1) and 12 months (T2) by means of the following self-administered tests: Distress Thermometer (DT), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Impact of Event Scale Revised (IES-R), Post-traumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). Results: DT decreased over time (T0 vs. T2, p < .001). HADS decreased from T0 to T2 (p < .001). The PTG subscales regarding new possibilities and appreciating life improved comparing T0 vs. T2 (p = .029; p = .013), as well as the total index of PTG (p = .027). The IES avoidance subscale score decreased over time (T0 vs. T1, p = .035). Conclusions: For some patients, the cancer experience is characterized not only by psychological distress but also by the presence and growth of positive aspects, such as the tendency to positively reconsider the value and importance of life, health and social relationships.

Abstract:Objective: The traumatic experience of cancer, in addition to its negative impact on breast cancer patients, can also bring about positive change, i.e., post-traumatic growth (PTG). PTG can help boost patients' confidence in their fight against the disease and improve their adherence to treatment, thereby facilitating their recovery. The study aimed to investigate the effect of perceived stress on the PTG of patients undergoing postoperative chemotherapy for breast cancer and to examine the roles of rumination and self-efficacy between two. Methods: The data was collected using a cross-sectional design. From December 2021 to October 2022, a total of 306 breast cancer patients who had undergone chemotherapy following surgery and met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected from three tertiary-level A hospitals in Henan Province, China. We conducted descriptive analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, and a regression analysis using PROCESS Macro Model 80 to explore the relationships among perceived stress, rumination, self-efficacy, and PTG. Results: Perceived stress of patients undergoing postoperative chemotherapy for breast cancer had a negative predictive effect on PTG (r = -0.340, P < 0.01); Rumination and self-efficacy played a partial mediating effect between perceived stress and PTG, accounting for 45.25% of the total effect. Conclusions: Clinical nursing staff could promote PTG by strengthening psychological assessment and timely psychological intervention for patients with high perceived stress levels, encourage patients to adopt a positive way of thinking about illness and improve their self-efficacy level, so as to improve their PTG level.

Abstract:Resumen Posttraumatic growth (PTG), the positive psychological transformations that follow traumatic events, affects both direct survivors (primary PTG) and their significant others (secondary PTG). Though primary and secondary PTG have been widely investigated in the literature, their long-term trajectories decades after a traumatic event, especially as survivors enter older age, remain largely uninvestigated. Furthermore, it remains contested whether PTG adds up to a monolithic construct or rather consists of relatively independent components. Addressing these issues, we assessed a sample of Israeli male veterans from the 1973 Yom Kippur war (N = 349) and their wives (N = 156) at three time points over the course of nearly three decades. Both the veterans (primary survivors) and their wives (secondary survivors) reported PTG relating to the veterans' experiences during the war and/or captivity. Latent growth mixture modeling was conducted to identify trajectories of PTG on the five subscales of the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory. Long-term trajectories of PTG followed heterogeneous patterns of fluctuation over time and particularly as participants entered older age. On most subscales, decreasing PTG scores were evident, a trend that was more pronounced among the primary survivors than the secondary survivors as primary and secondary PTG fluctuate considerably in the long-term and seem to decrease as individuals enter older age. Furthermore, it would seem that PTG should not be considered a holistic concept but rather a conglomeration of positive changes. Implications of the findings are discussed within the context of limitations and potential intervening factors.
