Abstract:A series of N -heterocyclic carbene (NHC) silver complexes derived from 6-[bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)methyl]-2-pyridylimidazole have been synthesized and characterized by physico-chemical and spectroscopic methods, and the structures of four complexes have been confirmed by X-ray structural analyses. The functionalized NHC is a monodentate ligand in (NHC)AgCl through the carbene carbon atom, and a bridging [C,N,N] tridentate ligand in (NHC) 2 Ag 2 (BF 4 ) 2 and (NHC) 2 Ag 2 (PF 6 ) 2 through two pyrazolyl nitrogens and the carbene carbon to form a metallomacrocycle, in which a head (carbene)– to tail (nitrogen) coordination mode to two silver atoms is observed. Preliminary catalytic tests show that these newly synthesized Ag–NHC complexes exhibit excellent catalytic activity at a low catalyst loading (0.1–1 mol%) in the aldehyde–amine–alkyne coupling reaction.

Internal 2D networking of silver bromide with bidentate N-heterocyclic carbene ligand enables the formation of inherently heterogeneous reusable catalyst for multicomponent A3 coupling

Abstract:We report a synthesis of a heterogenous silver catalyst stabilized by bidentate N-heterocyclic carbene ligands. The heterogeneous nature of the catalyst is inherently derived from the unprecedented internal structural features observed for the catalyst. X-ray studies show that the silver complex forms a two-dimensional cross-linked system, where one dimension of the network is formed by inorganic polymer strings and the second direction is formed by the interconnection of these inorganic strings with NHC bidentate ligands. This organized internal arrangement renders the complex insoluble in many common organic solvents and enables its utilization as a reusable heterogeneous catalyst in multicomponent A3 coupling reactions. Notably, propargylic amines were obtained with yields of up to 97%, and the catalyst demonstrated reusability for six cycles. These results can facilitate the further development of heterogeneous NHC catalysts.

Abstract:[Ni-2(3,5-bis(N-methylimidazolylidenylmethyl)pyrazolate)(2)](PF6)(2) (1), [Ni-2(mu-OH)(3,5-bis(N-pycolylimidazolylidenylmethyl)pyrazolate)](PF6)(2) (2), and [Ni-2(mu-OH)(3,5-bis(N-pyridylimidazolylidenylmethyl)pyrazolate)](PF6)(2) (3) have been prepared from the corresponding imidazolium salts via in situ generated silver-carbene complexes. The complexes and imidazolium salts were characterized by elemental analyses and NMR spectroscopy. The structures of 1-3 were identified by X-ray diffraction analysis. In complex 1, two nickel(II) ions are sandwiched by two 3,5-bis(N-methylimidazolylidenylmethyl)pyrazolates behaving as anionic tetradentate ligands. Complexes 2 and 3 contain Ni-2(mu-OH) cores with two nickel centers bridged by anionic hexadentate imidazolylidene ligands. Complexes 2 and 3 show excellent catalytic activities in Suzuki-Miyaura and Kumada-Corriu coupling reactions of various aryl chlorides. The cross-coupling reactions of deactivated aryl chlorides with arylboronic acids and Grignard reagents have been accomplished in excellent yields at low catalyst loadings.
Bimetallic Cooperative Catalysis for Decarbonylative Heteroarylation of Carboxylic Acids Via C‐O/C‐H Coupling

Abstract:Cooperative bimetallic catalysis is a fundamental approach in modern synthetic chemistry. We report bimetallic cooperative catalysis for the direct decarbonylative heteroarylation of ubiquitous carboxylic acids via acyl C-O/C-H coupling. This novel catalytic system exploits the cooperative action of a copper catalyst and a palladium catalyst in decarbonylation, which enables highly chemoselective synthesis of important heterobiaryl motifs through the coupling of carboxylic acids with heteroarenes in the absence of prefunctionalization or directing groups. This cooperative decarbonylative method uses common carboxylic acids and shows a remarkably broad substrate scope (>70 examples), including late-stage modification of pharmaceuticals and streamlined synthesis of bioactive agents. Extensive mechanistic and computational studies were conducted to gain insight into the mechanism of the reaction. The key step involves intersection of the two catalytic cycles via transmetallation of the copper-aryl species with the palladium(II) intermediate generated by oxidative addition/decarbonylation.

Abstract:Imidazolium salts bearing triazole groups are synthesized via a copper catalyzed click reaction, and the silver, palladium, and platinum complexes of their N-heterocyclic carbenes are studied. [Ag4(L1)(4)](PF6)(4), [Pd(L1)Cl](PF6), [Pt(L1)Cl](PF6) (L1 = 3-((1-benzyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methyl)-1-(pyrimidin-2-yl)-1H-imidazolylidene), [Pd-2(L-2)(2)Cl-2](PF6)(2), and [Pd(L-2)(2)](PF6)(2) (L-2 = 1-butyl-3-(1-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methyl)imidazolylidene) have been synthesized and fully characterized by NMR, elemental analysis, and X-ray crystallography. The silver complex [Ag-4(L1)(4)](PF6)(4) consists of a Ag-4 zigzag chain. The complexes [Pd(L1)Cl](PF6) and [Pt(L1)Cl](PF6), containing a nonsymmetrical NCN' pincer ligand, are square planar with a chloride trans to the carbene donor. [Pd-2(L-2)(2)Cl-2](PF6)(2) consists of two palladium centers with CN2Cl coordination mode, whereas the palladium in [Pd(L-2)(2)](PF6)(2) is surrounded by two carbene and two triazole groups with two uncoordinated pyridines. The palladium compounds are highly active for Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling reactions of aryl bromides and 1,1-dibromo-1-alkenes in neat water under an air atmosphere.

Abstract:Carbene-metal-amide (CMA) complexes of gold, silver, and copper have been studied extensively for their photochemical/photocatalytic properties and as potential (pre-)catalysts in organic synthesis. Herein, the design, synthesis, and characterization of five bench-stable Au-, Ag-, and Cu-NHC complexes, bearing 1H-benzotriazolide as an amide donor is reported. All complexes are synthesized in a facile and straightforward manner, using mild conditions. The catalytic activity of all complexes was studied in propargylamide cycloisomerization and carbonyl hydrosilylation reactions. Both CMA-catalyzed transformations proceed under mild conditions and are highly efficient for a wide range of propargylamides and carbonyl compounds, respectively, affording the desired corresponding products in good to excellent yields.

Abstract:Complex asymmetric synthesis can be realized by the chiral induction of amino acids in nature. It is of great significance to design a new biomimetic catalytic system for asymmetric synthesis. In this context, we report the preparation and characterization of the composite of polyacrylonitrile fiber (PANF) and metal-organic framework to catalyze the chiral synthesis of propargylamines. A confined microenvironment is established with N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) silver complex-supported PANF and D-proline-encapsulated MIL-101(Cr). This novel supported catalyst demonstrated high activity in addition to excellent stereoselectivity in the three-component reaction between alkynes, aldehydes, and amines (A3). The regeneration can be realized by adsorption of D-proline again when the stereoselectivity decreases after recycle uses. By regulating the confined microenvironment on the composite, the activity and selectivity of the catalytic system are improved with turnover numbers of up to 2800 and 98% ee. The biomimetic catalytic system to A3 coupling reaction is systematically studied, and the synergistic catalytic mechanism between NHC-Ag and D-proline in the confined microenvironment is revealed.

Abstract:The imidazolium salts bis(N-pyridylimidazoliumyl)methane hexafluorophosphate ([H2L1](PF6)2) and bis(N-picolyl)benzimidazoliumyl)methane hexafluorophosphate ([H2L2](PF6)2) as the precursors of potentially tetradentate NHC ligands were synthesized in 63–98% yields. Their reactions with Ag2O afforded silver−NHC complexes [Ag3(L1)2(CH3CN)2](PF6)3 (1) and [Ag4(L2)2(CH3CN)2](PF6)4 (2), respectively. Further reactions of these silver complexes as carbene transfer reagents yielded square-planar nickel(II) complexes [NiL1](PF6)2 (3) and [NiL2](PF6)2 (4), respectively. These silver and nickel complexes have been fully characterized by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. Both 3 and 4 catalyzed Suzuki-type cross-coupling of aryl chlorides and bromides containing electron-withdrawing and electron-donating substituents. Complex 3 is a more active catalyst under mild conditions.

Abstract:An operationally simple and highly selective Au/Ag bimetallic-catalyzed cross-dehydrogenative biaryl coupling between pyrazoles and fluoroarenes has been developed. With this reaction, a wide range of biheteroaryl products can be obtained in moderate to good yields with excellent functional group compatibility. The exact role of silver salts, previously overlooked in most gold-catalyzed transformations, has been carefully investigated in this biaryl coupling. Insightful experimental and theoretical studies indicate that silver acetate is the actual catalyst for C-H activation of electron-poor arenes, rather than the previously reported gold(I)-catalyzed process. An unprecedented Au/Ag dual catalysis is proposed, in which silver(I) is responsible for the activation of electron-poor fluoroarenes via a concerted metalation-deprotonation pathway, and gold(III) is responsible for the activation of electron-rich pyrazoles via an electrophilic aromatic substitution process. Kinetic studies reveal that ArFnAu(III)-mediated C-H activation of pyrazoles is most likely the rate-limiting step.

Abstract:Here we describe a homocoupling reaction of arylboronic acid facilitated by silver carbonate, which proceeds smoothly in MeOH even at ambient temperature. The reaction exhibits broad functional group compatibility, affording a variety of symmetrical biaryls in satisfactory yields. Silver nanoparticles formed in situ serve as an accelerator in this process. Moreover, initial mechanistic investigations suggest that this transformation may occur via a radical mechanism.

Abstract:A library of gold(I) chloride complexes with phosphine ligands incorporating pendant (thio)urea and squaramide H-bond donors was prepared with the aim of promoting chloride abstraction from Au(I) via H-bonding. In the absence of silver additives, complexes bearing squaramides and trifluoromethylated aromatic ureas displayed good catalytic activity in the cyclization of N-propargyl benzamides, as well as in a 1,6-enyne cycloisomerization, a tandem cyclization-indole addition reaction and the hydrohydrazination of phenylacetylene. Kinetic studies and DFT calculations indicate that the energetic span of the reaction is accounted by both the chloride abstraction step, facilitated by the bidentate H-bond donor via an associative mechanism, and the subsequent cyclization step.

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) was used to investigate the three-component coupling reactions of aldehydes, alkynes, and amines (A3 coupling) using N-heterocyclic carbene silver as the catalyst. This study reveals that the addition reaction between the catalyst N-heterocyclic carbene silver and phenylacetylene (PAE) forms Ag_PAE. Subsequently, one hydrogen atom of the Ag_PAE migrates to the nitrogen atom of the Amine. Thereafter, the amine aldehyde condensation reaction generates a molecule of water and an imine ion with (Path one) or without (Path two) another amine catalyst. Path one has a lower reaction barrier than Path two. Subsequently, the imine ion reacts with silver phenylacetylide to generate the A3 coupling reaction product propargylamine (PPA). Furthermore, the triple bond and −N3 group in PPA undergo a cycloaddition reaction and generate the final product (PR). The entire reaction is strongly exothermic, and, therefore, the reaction is easy to conduct. Moreover, conceptual density functional theory calculations confirm the reaction mechanism. Investigating the mechanism of these reactions will be helpful for understanding and developing new synthesis strategies for similar functional compounds.

Abstract:A new methodology for the preparation of Co(I)-NHC (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) complexes, namely, [Co(PCNHCP)(CO)2][Co(CO)4] (1) and [Co(PCNHCP)(CO)2]BF4 (2), has been developed (PCNHCP = 1,3-bis(2-(diphenylphosphanyl)ethyl)-imidazol-2-ylidene). Both complexes can be straightforwardly prepared by direct reaction of their parent imidazolium salts with the Co(0) complex Co2(CO)8. Complex 1 efficiently catalyses the reductive amination of furfural and levulinic acid employing silanes as reducing agents under mild conditions. Furfural has been converted into a variety of secondary and tertiary amines employing dimethyl carbonate as the solvent, while levulinic acid has been converted into pyrrolidines under solventless conditions. Dehydrocoupling of the silane to give polysilanes has been observed to occur as a side reaction of the hydrosilylation process.
Enantioselective Relay Coupling of Perfluoroalkyl and Vinylogous Ketyl Radicals

Abstract:β-Chiral carboxylic acids and their derivatives are highly valuable structural motifs in the fields of asymmetric synthesis and medicinal chemistry. However, the introduction of a sterically demanding sidechain to the β-carbon, such as an all-carbon quaternary center, remains a significant challenge in classical polar processes. Recently, N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) mediated coupling reactions involving persistent ketyl radicals have emerged as a promising strategy to assemble highly crowded carbon-carbon bonds. Nevertheless, achieving enantioselectivity in these reactions remains highly challenging. In this work, we report our recent progress in controlling enantioselectivity for relay coupling of perfluoroalkyl and persistent vinylogous ketyl radicals. We developed a chiral bifunctional NHC-squaramide catalyst that achieves high facial selectivity in a critical bond-forming event involving the coupling of a congested tertiary carbon radical and vinylogous ketyl radical. Chiral carboxylates bearing an all-carbon quaternary center at the β-position can be prepared in good yield and excellent enantiomeric excess. Results from density functional theory (DFT) calculations and nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE) experiments indicate that the N,N'-diaryl squaramide motif adopts an unusual syn-syn conformation, enabling hydrogen bonding interactions with the enolate oxygen, thereby rigidifying the overall conformation of the transition state.

Abstract:A silver oxidant/Lewis acid catalyst cooperatively promoted three-component carbo-heterofunctionalization of alkenes is reported. A broad range of nucleophiles, including H2O, alcohols, and anilines, can combine with a variety of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds or analogues as radical precursors to realize difunctionalization of various styrene derivatives. Interestingly, mechanistic investigations demonstrate that the Ag(I) complex of bidentate phosphine ligand quickly oxidizes the radical intermediate generated from the addition of initial radical across alkene double bonds to form carbocation intermediates, which may be the reason behind the excellent yields and high selectivity of such reactions.

Abstract:An amide functionlized bidentate NHC-Pd complex was successfully prepared by a facile solvothermal methodology from a bridged bis-benzimidazolium chloride and K2PdCl4. The new bidentate NHC-Pd complex has been effectively applied as catalyst in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of aryl halides with arylboronic acids in distilled water (yields up to 99.0%). The bridged bis-benzimidazolium ligand from the Pd complex, bearing the amide functional groups on the nitrogen atom, showed to distinctly influence the electronic and steric effects on the catalytic process. The potential of application of the new NHC-Pd catalyst in diverse CC bond forming processes, working under environmentally friendly conditions, is further outlined.

Abstract:Selective functionalization of ubiquitous C-H bonds based on 1,n-metal migration provides an attractive and sustainable route to access complex molecules from readily available precursors. Herein, we report a Co-catalyzed asymmetric reductive migratory Nozaki-Hiyama-Kishi (NHK) coupling between two readily available electrophiles, aryl (pseudo)halides and aldehydes, via an unprecedented through-space aryl-to-alkenyl 1,4-cobalt/hydride shift. The judicious choice of ligands is crucial for selectivity, leading to either ipso- or migratory NHK products with exquisite control of regio-, E/Z-, and enantioselectivity. Enabled by a ligand relay catalytic strategy, this platform has been further extended to aryl-to-aryl asymmetric migratory NHK coupling.
