Abstract:Visible/near-infrared (Vis/NIR) spectroscopy was applied to determine the ripeness of melons ( Cucumis melo L.). The total soluble solids (TSS) and flesh color distribution around the equator fracture surface was studied, and a high correlation between TSS and flesh color in the outer mesocarp region was observed. A new ripeness index, defined as the edible ratio (ER), was proposed. One hundred and twenty melons with similar sizes were selected as samples and divided into a calibration set and a prediction set. Spectra of melons were acquired separately under transmittance and interactance modes. A machine vision system was established to acquire images of the melon fracture surfaces to further calculate the ER values of the melons. Partial least squares (PLS) calibration models were developed to predict the melon ripeness indices, including TSS, surface color (SC), and ER value. The results were promising for TSS, Hunter a , and ER value. For Hunter b , the results were insufficient. In addition, by comparing the performances of the calibration models developed under different detection modes, it was concluded that the best calibration results for TSS and ER were achieved under the transmittance mode, while for Hunter a , the best result was obtained using interactance spectra.
Classification of Frozen Corn Seeds Using Hyperspectral VIS/NIR Reflectance Imaging

Abstract:A VIS/NIR hyperspectral imaging system was used to classify three different degrees of freeze-damage in corn seeds. Using image processing methods, the hyperspectral image of the corn seed embryo was obtained first. To find a relatively better method for later imaging visualization, four different pretreatment methods (no pretreatment, multiplicative scatter correction (MSC), standard normal variation (SNV) and 5 points and 3 times smoothing (5-3 smoothing)), four wavelength selection algorithms (successive projection algorithm (SPA), principal component analysis (PCA), X-loading and full-band method) and three different classification modeling methods (partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), K-nearest neighbor (KNN) and support vector machine (SVM)) were applied to make a comparison. Next, the visualization images according to a mean spectrum to mean spectrum (M2M) and a mean spectrum to pixel spectrum (M2P) were compared in order to better represent the freeze damage to the seed embryos. It was concluded that the 5-3 smoothing method and SPA wavelength selection method applied to the modeling can improve the signal-to-noise ratio, classification accuracy of the model (more than 90%). The final classification results of the method M2P were better than the method M2M, which had fewer numbers of misclassified corn seed samples and the samples could be visualized well.
Improving accuracy of prediction model for soluble solids content of watermelon by variable selection based on near-infrared spectroscopy

Abstract:Fruit internal quality is an important indicator in the fruit grading,preservation and storage stage;rapid non-destructive detection of fruit internal quality can improve the marketable value of watermelon.Near infrared spectroscopy(NIRS) is a powerful technology with the virtue of the convenience and accuracy.This work focused on soluble solids content(SSC) determination of the Qilin watermelon.On basis of the NIRS,we adopted a near-infrared diffuse transmittance technique.We used the home-built measurement system with a fiber optic spectrometer to acquire the spectra.Partial least squares regression(PLSR),multiple linear regression(MLR) and principal component regression(PCR) were used to establish mathematical models.In order to improve the predictive models,firstly,variables were reduced by the interval spectral average method and the interval spectral extraction method,respectively.Further model optimization was carried out by a successive projections algorithm(SPA).The results showed that the PLSR models with 115 variables obtained by an interval of 5 in 574 variables were the best one in first step.Different pretreatments were employed using the 115 variables.By comparison of the results of the PLSR models with different pretreatment,we adopted the normalization pretreatment as the input of SPA algorithm,six optimal wavelengths(702.32,713.68,732.58,770.23,863.53 and 904.21nm) were picked out.In a comparison of the predictive results of PLSR,MLR and PCR,the performance of the PLSR model for SSC prediction was better,the correlation coefficient of prediction(rpre) was 0.828,root mean square error of calibration(RMSEC) was 0.589,and root mean square error of prediction(RMSEP) was 0.611.The results revealed that this model took less time for modeling and had reliable predictive ability.This study showed that the home-built measurement system was stable,and provided a theoretical basis for on-line nondestructive detection of the internal quality of watermelon.
Application of Hyperspectral Imaging for Watermelon Seed Classification Using Deep Learning and Scoring Mechanism

Abstract:Watermelon seeds are a significant source of nutrition in the diet. To assess the potential of near-infrared hyperspectral imaging technology for swift and nondestructive identification of watermelon seed varieties, near-infrared hyperspectral imaging (NIR-HSI) technology was used. The Savitzky–Golay (SG) smoothing algorithm and standard normal variable (SNV) algorithm were combined to preprocess the extracted spectral data. The successive projections algorithm (SPA) was used to reduce the dimensionality of the spectral data. Subsequently, three deep learning models (LeNet, GoogLeNet, and ResNet) were used to classify 10 common watermelon seeds. SPA was used to reduce the dimensionality of hyperspectral data. In terms of full band, the ResNet model achieved a classification accuracy of 86.77% on the test set. By using characteristic bands, the GoogLeNet model achieved a classification accuracy of 83.85% on the test set. The ensemble fusion model based on a scoring mechanism achieved accuracy rates of 99.56%, 90.88%, and 87.97% on the training, validation, and test sets, respectively. The results indicated that the ensemble fusion model based on a scoring mechanism can enhance accuracy. Combining deep learning with NIR-HSI can effectively distinguish different varieties of watermelon seeds.

Study on Identification of Immature Corn Seed Using Hyperspectral Imaging

Abstract:The seed maturity,which is one of the important factors that affect seed vigor,is an important quality index.During seed sorting,separating mature seeds from immature seeds can improve the vigor of seed lot and keep vigor consistency.Hyper-spectral imaging that covered the range of 400~1 000 nm was used to find out the sensitive bands reflecting corn seed maturity, and corresponding images were employed to classify the immature corn seeds.Principal component analysis (PCA)algorithm was adopted to analyze the hyperspectral image.PC2 of PCA had the greatest difference between immature and mature areas on the seeds,therefore,the weighted coefficients of PC2 was selected to extract sensitive wavebands (501 nm).Regions of interest (ROI)from mature and immature area of 70 immature kernels was selected for mean spectra calculation.Partial least square re-gression (PLSR)algorithm was employed to analyze the spectra of ROI and extract wavelength related to maturity (5 1 8 nm). Band ratio algorithm and Kruskal-Wallis test were used to select the best band ratio that had the biggest difference between ma-ture and immature areas (640 nm/525 nm).864 kernels of corn seed were analyzed by gray images of the selected wavelengths as well as band ratio images.Results showed that the light color regions of the seed crown were misidentified as immature region when the images of selected single band wavelengths were used,while the band ratio image of 640 nm/525 nm could be identified correctly.The immature seeds can be separated from the mature seeds according to the area ratio of segmented immature region to the whole kernel.The correct recognition rate was 93.9%.Using the grey images of selected band ratio can differentiate im-mature corn seeds from mature seeds effectively,which provide a theoretical reference for the development of seed sorting device in further work.
Nondestructive Detection of Sunflower Seed Vigor and Moisture Content Based on Hyperspectral Imaging and Chemometrics

Abstract:Sunflower is an important crop, and the vitality and moisture content of sunflower seeds have an important influence on the sunflower's planting and yield. By employing hyperspectral technology, the spectral characteristics of sunflower seeds within the wavelength range of 384–1034 nm were carefully analyzed with the aim of achieving effective prediction of seed vitality and moisture content. Firstly, the original hyperspectral data were subjected to preprocessing techniques such as Savitzky–Golay smoothing, standard normal variable correction (SNV), and multiplicative scatter correction (MSC) to effectively reduce noise interference, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the data. Subsequently, principal component analysis (PCA), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), and stacked autoencoders (SAE) were utilized to extract key feature bands, enhancing the interpretability and predictive performance of the data. During the modeling phase, random forests (RFs) and LightGBM algorithms were separately employed to construct classification models for seed vitality and prediction models for moisture content. The experimental results demonstrated that the SG-SAE-LightGBM model exhibited outstanding performance in the classification task of sunflower seed vitality, achieving an accuracy rate of 98.65%. Meanwhile, the SNV-XGBoost-LightGBM model showed remarkable achievement in moisture content prediction, with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.9715 and root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.8349. In conclusion, this study confirms that the fusion of hyperspectral technology and multivariate data analysis algorithms enables the accurate and rapid assessment of sunflower seed vitality and moisture content, providing robust tools and theoretical support for seed quality evaluation and agricultural production practices. Furthermore, this research not only expands the application of hyperspectral technology in unraveling the intrinsic vitality characteristics of sunflower seeds but also possesses significant theoretical and practical value.

Rapid and Nondestructive Measurement of Rice Seed Vitality of Different Years Using Near-Infrared Hyperspectral Imaging.

Abstract:Seed vitality is one of the primary determinants of high yield that directly affects the performance of seedling emergence and plant growth. However, seed vitality may be lost during storage because of unfavorable conditions, such as high moisture content and temperatures. It is therefore vital for seed companies as well as farmers to test and determine seed vitality to avoid losses of any kind before sowing. In this study, near-infrared hyperspectral imaging (NIR-HSI) combined with multiple data preprocessing methods and classification models was applied to identify the vitality of rice seeds. A total of 2400 seeds of three different years: 2015, 2016 and 2017, were evaluated. The experimental results show that the NIR-HSI technique has great potential for identifying vitality and vigor of rice seeds. When detecting the seed vitality of the three different years, the extreme learning machine model with Savitzky-Golay preprocessing could achieve a high classification accuracy of 93.67% by spectral data from only eight wavebands (992, 1012, 1119, 1167, 1305, 1402, 1629 and 1649 nm), which could be developed for a fast and cost-effective seed-sorting system for industrial online application. When identifying non-viable seeds from viable seeds of different years, the least squares support vector machine model coupled with raw data and selected wavelengths of 968, 988, 1204, 1301, 1409, 1463, 1629, 1646 and 1659 nm achieved better classification performance (94.38% accuracy), and could be adopted as an optimal combination to identify non-viable seeds from viable seeds.

Abstract:<p>Seeds are the basis of the agricultural food industry, greater insights into seed viability before sowing could improve storage management and field performance. In the present study, we aimed to address this issue by using highly cost-efficient near-infrared hyperspectral imaging (NIR-HSI) and a convolutional neural network (CNN) deep learning approach. An NIR-HSI camera was used because it can recognize both molecular vibration information (i.e. chemical component differences) and its spatial distribution in each seed sample; this camera is much more informative than a regular RGB digital camera. Using this technology, the emphasis of this study was firstly to provide a methodology for enhancing the interpretability of viable and non-viable seeds via principal component analysis (PCA) and support vector machine (SVM) viability classification analysis of NIR-HSI data. A CNN was then constructed to"cognize" the differences in viable and non-inviable seeds and classify them automatically. Experimental results indicate that the methodology produces a ~90% classification accuracy for both a five-fold cross-validation set and a test set of naturally aged Japanese mustard spinach seeds. Therefore, this study provides a new strategy for effective and practical seed viability prediction.</p>

Improving SSC Detection Accuracy of Cherry Tomatoes by Feature Synergy and Complementary Spectral Bands Combination

Abstract:The visible/near-infrared (VIS/NIR) spectroscopy technique has been extensively employed for the nondestructive detection of soluble solids content (SSC) in fruit. However, some existing algorithms and modeling optimization methods for improving the detection accuracy of SSC may be applicable to specific conditions and not universal. To break through this bottleneck problem, we propose a potentially universal strategy based on feature synergy and spectral bands combination of multiple detection modes. Firstly, compared with the commonly used halogen lamp, the xenon lamp was utilized to cover the ultraviolet (UV) range and match the characteristic information of different sugars (glucose, fructose, and sucrose). Furthermore, the spectral fusion method was employed to combine the reflectance and transmittance spectra to improve the cherry tomatoes SSC prediction accuracy with comprehensive data in the UV/VIS/NIR region. Finally, the best results were achieved by the partial least square regression (PLSR) model with spectral bands fusion, yielding the results of R2p, RMSEP, and RPD as 0.9653, 0.1998%, and 5.31, respectively. The same conclusion can also be verified when predicting the SSC in strawberries. Overall, this strategy is potentially universal to improve the prediction accuracy of SSC in fruit by matching light source spectra with characteristic absorption, as well as utilizing comprehensive spectral information in the 200-1100 nm range, providing valuable insights for the practical application of nondestructive detection of fruit internal quality.
Non-destructive detection of single-seed viability in maize using hyperspectral imaging technology and multi-scale 3D convolutional neural network

Abstract:The viability of Zea mays seed plays a critical role in determining the yield of corn. Therefore, developing a fast and non-destructive method is essential for rapid and large-scale seed viability detection and is of great significance for agriculture, breeding, and germplasm preservation. In this study, hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technology was used to obtain images and spectral information of maize seeds with different aging stages. To reduce data input and improve model detection speed while obtaining more stable prediction results, successive projections algorithm (SPA) was used to extract key wavelengths that characterize seed viability, then key wavelength images of maize seed were divided into small blocks with 5 pixels ×5 pixels and fed into a multi-scale 3D convolutional neural network (3DCNN) for further optimizing the discrimination possibility of single-seed viability. The final discriminant result of single-seed viability was determined by comprehensively evaluating the result of all small blocks belonging to the same seed with the voting algorithm. The results showed that the multi-scale 3DCNN model achieved an accuracy of 90.67% for the discrimination of single-seed viability on the test set. Furthermore, an effort to reduce labor and avoid the misclassification caused by human subjective factors, a YOLOv7 model and a Mask R-CNN model were constructed respectively for germination judgment and bud length detection in this study, the result showed that mean average precision (mAP) of YOLOv7 model could reach 99.7%, and the determination coefficient of Mask R-CNN model was 0.98. Overall, this study provided a feasible solution for detecting maize seed viability using HSI technology and multi-scale 3DCNN, which was crucial for large-scale screening of viable seeds. This study provided theoretical support for improving planting quality and crop yield.

Abstract:This study investigated the possibility of using visible and near-infrared (VIS/NIR) hyperspectral imaging techniques to discriminate viable and non-viable wheat seeds. Both sides of individual seeds were subjected to hyperspectral imaging (400-1000 nm) to acquire reflectance spectral data. Four spectral datasets, including the ventral groove side, reverse side, mean (the mean of two sides' spectra of every seed), and mixture datasets (two sides' spectra of every seed), were used to construct the models. Classification models, partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), and support vector machines (SVM), coupled with some pre-processing methods and successive projections algorithm (SPA), were built for the identification of viable and non-viable seeds. Our results showed that the standard normal variate (SNV)-SPA-PLS-DA model had high classification accuracy for whole seeds (>85.2%) and for viable seeds (>89.5%), and that the prediction set was based on a mixed spectral dataset by only using 16 wavebands. After screening with this model, the final germination of the seed lot could be higher than 89.5%. Here, we develop a reliable methodology for predicting the viability of wheat seeds, showing that the VIS/NIR hyperspectral imaging is an accurate technique for the classification of viable and non-viable wheat seeds in a non-destructive manner.

Detection of Internal Qualities of Hami Melons Using Hyperspectral Imaging Technology Based on Variable Selection Algorithms

Abstract:Hyperspectral imaging technology was used to assess the soluble solids content (SSC), titrable acidity content (TAC), and firmness of hami melons. The mean spectra were extracted from the regions of interest (ROI) of the hyperspectral images of each hami melon. Spectral data were first pretreated with different preprocessing methods and analyzed using the partial least squares (PLS) method to build calibration models. However, full spectral data contain a great number of redundant and colinear variables that lead to poor predicting ability of calibration models. Three typical variable selection methods, i.e., the genetic algorithm (GA), successive projections algorithm (SPA), and competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) were used to extract effective wavelength variables from the full spectra for determination of SSC, TAC, and firmness of hami melon. The results showed that the SNV-CARS-PLS model based on 51 and 40 wavelength variables achieved the optimal performance for SSC and TAC compared with full spectral SNV-PLS, SNV-GA-PLS, and SNV-SPA-PLS models. The R-P, RMSEP, and RPD of SNV-CARS-PLS model for SSC were 0.9606, 0.3816, and 3.598, respectively, and 0.9125, 0.0263, and 2.445 for TAC, respectively. The best model for predicting firmness was RAW-CARS-PLS model based on 57 wavelength variables with the R-P RMSEP, and RDP values of 0.8671, 20.05, and 1.996, respectively. Overall, the results indicate that the CARS is a powerful method for selecting effective wavelength variables and demonstrated the feasibility of using hyperspectral imaging technology as a fast and nondestructive method for simultaneous detection of SSC, TAC, and firmness of hami melons.Practical applicationsThe quality of melon has a direct relationship with the soluble solids content, titrable acidity content, and texture of melon. To ensure the best taste and highest nutritional value, it is better for melons to be harvested when completely mature. Nowadays, melons were harvested according to different fruit development times after flowering. Traditional methods for detection of internal qualities and maturity of melon mainly focus on the appearance of melon and depend on the feelings of professionals, which are tedious, time-consuming, expensive, and greatly influenced by subjective factors. More than anything, Traditional methods are hard to be highly accurate. Hyperspectral imaging technology has the advantages of rapid and nondestructive. The results showed that hyperspectral imaging technology for the simultaneous detection of soluble solids content, titrable acidity content, and firmness of melon is feasible. And the results can provide a reference for detecting large fruits by using hyperspectral imaging technology
Rapid and Non-Destructive Prediction of Moisture Content in Maize Seeds Using Hyperspectral Imaging

Abstract:The moisture content of corn seeds is a crucial indicator for evaluating seed quality and is also a fundamental aspect of grain testing. In this experiment, 80 corn samples of various varieties were selected and their moisture content was determined using the direct drying method. The hyperspectral imaging system was employed to capture the spectral images of corn seeds within the wavelength range of 1100-2498 nm. By utilizing seven preprocessing techniques, including moving average, S-G smoothing, baseline, normalization, SNV, MSC, and detrending, we preprocessed the spectral data and then established a PLSR model for comparison. The results show that the model established using the normalization preprocessing method has the best prediction performance. To remove spectral redundancy and simplify the prediction model, we utilized SPA, CASR, and UVE algorithms to extract feature wavelengths. Based on three algorithms (PLSR, PCR, and SVM), we constructed 12 predictive models. Upon evaluating these models, it was determined that the normalization-SPA-PLSR algorithm produced the most accurate prediction. This model boasts high RC2 and RP2 values of 0.9917 and 0.9914, respectively, along with low RMSEP and RMSECV values of 0.0343 and 0.0257, respectively, indicating its exceptional stability and predictive capabilities. This suggests that the model can precisely estimate the moisture content of maize seeds. The results showed that hyperspectral imaging technology provides technical support for rapid and non-destructive prediction of corn seed moisture content and new methods in seed quality evaluation.
Detection the internal quality of watermelon seeds based on terahertz imaging technology combined with image smoothing and enhancement algorithm

Abstract:The cultivation processes of watermelon seed are often affected by issues such as empty shells and defects, resulting in significant losses. To obtain high‐quality seeds, the terahertz imaging technology combined with image smoothing and enhancement algorithm was proposed to reduce the noise and non‐obvious features caused by the influence in the imaging process and realize the non‐destructive, efficient, and accurate detection of the internal quality of watermelon seeds. Initially, a terahertz imaging system with a spatial resolution of 0.4 mm was used to acquire images of watermelon seeds with varying levels of fullness. Subsequently, denoising techniques, including Gaussian filtering, median filtering, bilateral filtering, discrete wavelet transformation denoising, wavelet denoising, and principal component analysis denoising, were used to handle the terahertz spectral images of watermelon seeds in the frequency range of 1–1.5 THz, respectively. Image enhancement operations, involving segmented linear gray‐level transformation and fractional‐order differentiation, were performed on the terahertz images of watermelon seeds after denoising. The optimal image processing approach was determined based on defect assessment through threshold segmentation. Finally, the validation was conducted at a spatial resolution of 0.2 mm. The images at a spatial resolution of 0.4 mm were subjected to wavelet denoising and window slicing in segmented linear gray‐level transformation (WS‐SLT) enhancement; the results exhibited the following improvements in defect accuracy compared with untreated THz images. A 7.74% increase in accuracy was observed for empty seeds, along with a 6.29% increase in the defect ratio for defective seeds 1. The defect ratio for intact seeds was 0, and there was no significant difference in defect ratio accuracy for defective seeds 2. At a spatial resolution of 0.2 mm, the average defect ratio error of THz imaging handled by wavelet denoising and WS‐SLT was approximately 5.04%. In conclusion, the terahertz imaging technology coupled with wavelet denoising and WS‐SLT methods can be used to enhance the accuracy of internal defect detection in watermelon seeds, and it provides a technical foundation and reference for assessing watermelon seed fullness.

Abstract:Rapid nondestructive testing of peanut seed vigor is of great significance in current research. Before seeds are sown, effective screening of high-quality seeds for planting is crucial to improve the quality of crop yield, and seed vitality is one of the important indicators to evaluate seed quality, which can represent the potential ability of seeds to germinate quickly and whole and grow into normal seedlings or plants. Meanwhile, the advantage of nondestructive testing technology is that the seeds themselves will not be damaged. In this study, hyperspectral technology and superoxide dismutase activity were used to detect peanut seed vigor. To investigate peanut seed vigor and predict superoxide dismutase activity, spectral characteristics of peanut seeds in the wavelength range of 400-1000 nm were analyzed. The spectral data are processed by a variety of hot spot algorithms. Spectral data were preprocessed with Savitzky-Golay (SG), multivariate scatter correction (MSC), and median filtering (MF), which can effectively to reduce the effects of baseline drift and tilt. CatBoost and Gradient Boosted Decision Tree were used for feature band extraction, the top five weights of the characteristic bands of peanut seed vigor classification are 425.48nm, 930.8nm, 965.32nm, 984.0nm, and 994.7nm. XGBoost, LightGBM, Support Vector Machine and Random Forest were used for modeling of seed vitality classification. XGBoost and partial least squares regression were used to establish superoxide dismutase activity value regression model. The results indicated that MF-CatBoost-LightGBM was the best model for peanut seed vigor classification, and the accuracy result was 90.83%. MSC-CatBoost-PLSR was the optimal regression model of superoxide dismutase activity value. The results show that the R 2 was 0.9787 and the RMSE value was 0.0566. The results suggested that hyperspectral technology could correlate the external manifestation of effective peanut seed vigor.

Abstract:The conventional evaluation of maize seed vigor is a time-consuming and labor-intensive process. By contrast, this study introduces an automated, nondestructive framework for classifying maize seed vigor with different seed DNA repair capabilities using hyperspectral images. The selection of coated maize seeds for our case study also aligned well with practical applications. To ensure the accuracy and reliability of the results, rigorous data preprocessing steps were implemented to extract high-quality information from raw spectral data obtained from the hyperspectral images. In particular, commonly used pretreatment methods were explored. Instead of analyzing all the wavelengths of spectral data, a competitive adaptive reweighted sampling method was used to select more informative wavelengths, optimizing analysis efficiency. Furthermore, this study leveraged machine learning models, enriched through oversampling techniques to address data imbalance at the seed level. The results obtained using a support vector machine with enhanced techniques demonstrated promising results with 100% sensitivity, 96.91% specificity, and a 0.9807 Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC). Thus, this study highlighted the effectiveness of hyperspectral imaging and machine learning in modern seed assessment practices. By introducing a seed vigor classification system that can even accommodate coated seeds, this study offers a potential pathway for empowering seed producers in practical, real-world applications.

Non-Destructive Testing of Alfalfa Seed Vigor Based on Multispectral Imaging Technology

Abstract:Seed vigor is an important index to evaluate seed quality in plant species. How to evaluate seed vigor quickly and accurately has always been a serious problem in the seed research field. As a new physical testing method, multispectral technology has many advantages such as high sensitivity and accuracy, nondestructive and rapid application having advantageous prospects in seed quality evaluation. In this study, the morphological and spectral information of 19 wavelengths (365, 405, 430, 450, 470, 490, 515, 540, 570, 590, 630, 645, 660, 690, 780, 850, 880, 940, 970 nm) of alfalfa seeds with different level of maturity and different harvest periods (years), representing different vigor levels and age of seed, were collected by using multispectral imaging. Five multivariate analysis methods including principal component analysis (PCA), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF) and normalized canonical discriminant analysis (nCDA) were used to distinguish and predict their vigor. The results showed that LDA model had the best effect, with an average accuracy of 92.9% for seed samples of different maturity and 97.8% for seed samples of different harvest years, and the average sensitivity, specificity and precision of LDA model could reach more than 90%. The average accuracy of nCDA in identifying dead seeds with no vigor reached 93.3%. In identifying the seeds with high vigor and predicting the germination percentage of alfalfa seeds, it could reach 95.7%. In summary, the use of Multispectral Imaging and multivariate analysis in this experiment can accurately evaluate and predict the seed vigor, seed viability and seed germination percentages of alfalfa, providing important technical methods and ideas for rapid non-destructive testing of seed quality.

Abstract:Seed quality affects crop yield and the quality of agricultural products, and traditional identification methods are time-consuming, complex, and irreversibly destructive. This study aims to establish a fast, non-destructive, and effective approach for defect detection in maize seeds based on hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technology combined with deep learning. Raw spectra collected from maize seeds (200 each healthy and worm-eaten) were pre-processed using detrending (DE) and multiple scattering correction (MSC) to highlight the spectral differences between samples. A convolutional neural network architecture (CNN-FES) based on a feature selection mechanism was proposed according to the importance of wavelength in the target classification task. The results show that the subset of 24 feature wavelengths selected by the proposed CNN-FES can capture important feature information in the spectral data more effectively than the conventional successive projections algorithm (SPA) and competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) algorithms. In addition, a convolutional neural network architecture (CNN-ATM) based on an attentional classification mechanism was designed for one-dimensional spectral data classification and compared with three commonly used machine learning methods, linear discriminant analysis (LDA), random forest (RF), and support vector machine (SVM). The results show that the classification performance of the designed CNN-ATM on the full wavelength does not differ much from the above three methods, and the classification accuracy is above 90% on both the training and test sets. Meanwhile, the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of CNN-ATM based on feature wavelength modeling can reach up to 97.50%, 98.28%, and 96.77% at the highest, respectively. The study shows that hyperspectral imaging-based defect detection of maize seed is feasible and effective, and the proposed method has great potential for the processing and analysis of complex hyperspectral data.

Abstract:The aged seeds have a significant influence on seed vigor and corn growth. Therefore, it is vital for the planting industry to identify aged seeds. In this study, hyperspectral reflectance imaging (1,000–2,000 nm) was employed for identifying aged maize seeds using seeds harvested in different years. The average spectra of the embryo side, endosperm side, and both sides were extracted. The support vector machine (SVM) algorithm was used to develop classification models based on full spectra to evaluate the potential of hyperspectral imaging for maize seed detection and using the principal component analysis (PCA) and ANOVA to reduce data dimensionality and extract feature wavelengths. The classification models achieved perfect performance using full spectra with an accuracy of 100% for the prediction set. The performance of models established with the first three principal components was similar to full spectrum models, but that of PCA loading models was worse. Compared to other spectra, the two-band ratio (1,987 nm/1,079 nm) selected by ANOVA from embryo-side spectra achieved a better classification accuracy of 95% for the prediction set. The image texture features, including histogram statistics (HS) and gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM), were extracted from the two-band ratio image to establish fusion models. The results demonstrated that the two-band ratio selected from embryo-side spectra combined with image texture features achieved the classification of maize seeds harvested in different years with an accuracy of 97.5% for the prediction set. The overall results indicated that combining the two wavelengths with image texture features could detect aged maize seeds effectively. The proposed method was conducive to the development of multi-spectral detection equipment.

Abstract:Seed qualities including viability and germination significantly influence the quantity and the quality of harvest. Technological means to assess seed qualities and attributes of seed-derived food products are varied. This paper highlights the use of infrared hyperspectral imaging (NIR- HSI) in food quality control, authentication, safety, process monitoring, shelf-life prediction, ingredients analysis, allergens detection and food sorting and grading. It also shows a particular application of NIR-HSI for the monitoring of nutrient content of sprouts and germinated seeds for industrial processing of foods with high nutritional values. The paper further reviews the applications of NIR-HSI to predict seed viability and germination. The non-destructive, rapid, and high-throughput capability of NIR-HSI were demonstrated through research works combining the NIR-HSI technology with chemometrics tools to reach more than 90% prediction rate. These relatively high rates may depend on the storage conditions or the stringency of the artificial aging conditions applied to parts of the seeds. However, the NIR-HSI has also proven efficient using naturally aged seeds with the prediction rates up to 90% correct classification, demonstrating the high capability of the technology. In combination with advanced chemometrics tools, some components of emerging technologies such as traditional machine learning and deep learning models have been added to increase the efficiency of NIR_HSI. Overall, the research works reviewed in this paper and which cover several food crops and food products showed that NIR-HSI is set to reach new heights in monitoring seed viability for improved seed stock management, crop production and innovation in the food industry.
