Abstract:The alarmingly rising trend of type 2 diabetes constitutes a major global public health challenge particularly in the Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) region where the prevalence is among the highest in the world with a projection to increase by 96% by 2045. The economic boom in the MENA region over the past decades has brought exceptionally rapid shifts in eating habits characterized by divergence from the traditional Mediterranean diet towards a more westernized unhealthy dietary pattern, thought to be leading to the dramatic rises in obesity and non-communicable diseases. Research efforts have brought a greater understanding of the different pathways through which diet and obesity may affect diabetes clinical outcomes, emphasizing the crucial role of dietary interventions and weight loss in the prevention and management of diabetes. The purpose of this review is to explore the mechanistic pathways linking obesity with diabetes and to summarize the most recent evidence on the association of the intake of different macronutrients and food groups with the risk of type 2 diabetes. We also summarize the most recent evidence on the effectiveness of different macronutrient manipulations in the prevention and management of diabetes while highlighting the possible underlying mechanisms of action and latest evidence-based recommendations. We finally discuss the need to adequately integrate dietetic services in diabetes care specific to the MENA region and conclude with recommendations to improve dietetic care for diabetes in the region.

Abstract:Most data on the burden of diabetes and prediabetes are from countries where local infrastructure can support reliable estimates of the burden of non-communicable diseases. Countries in the Middle East and Africa, together with Russia, have a total population of almost 2 billion, but have been relatively overlooked by authors in this field. We reviewed the prevalence and drivers of prediabetes and diabetes across this large region. A large, and variable, burden of dysglycaemia exists, especially in Middle Eastern and North African countries, associated with high levels of obesity and sedentariness, with a generally lower prevalence in most other parts of Africa. The design and size of studies are highly variable, and more research to quantify the scale of the problem is needed. Local barriers to care relating to issues concerned with gender, consanguinity, lack of understanding of diabetes, lack of understanding of obesity as a health issue, and limited resource at a national level for tracking and intervention for diabetes and other non-communicable diseases. Lifestyle interventions with proven local cost-effectiveness, enhanced access to pharmacologic intervention, and societal interventions to promote better diet and more activity will be an important element in strategies to combat these adverse trends.

Abstract:Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a global health problem accompanied by an elevated risk of complications, the most common being cardiac and renal diseases. In Lebanon, the prevalence of T2D is estimated at 8–13%. Local medical practice generally suffers from clinical inertia, with gaps in the yearly assessment of clinical manifestations and suboptimal screening for major complications. The joint statement presented here, endorsed by five Lebanese scientific medical societies, aims at providing physicians in Lebanon with a tool for early, effective, and comprehensive care of patients with T2D. Findings from major randomized clinical trials of antidiabetic medications with cardio-renal benefits are presented, together with recommendations from international medical societies. Optimal care should be multidisciplinary and should include a multifactorial risk assessment, lifestyle modifications, and a regular evaluation of risks, including the risks for cardiovascular (CV) and renal complications. With international guidelines supporting a shift in T2D management from glucose-lowering agents to disease-modifying drugs, the present statement recommends treatment initiation with metformin, followed by the addition of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors or glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists due to their CV and renal protection properties, whenever possible. In addition to the selection of the most appropriate pharmacological therapy, efforts should be made to provide continuous education to patients about their disease, with the aim to achieve a patient-centered approach and to foster self-management and adherence to the medical plan. Increasing the level of patient engagement is expected to be associated with favorable health outcomes. Finally, this statement recommends setting an achievable individualized management plan and conducting regular follow-ups to monitor the patients' glycemic status and assess their risks every 3–6 months.

Factors associated with consulting a dietitian for diabetes management: a cross-sectional study

Abstract:Abstract Background Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) has reached epidemic levels in the Middle East region. Despite evidence that it improves health outcomes and saves health costs, dietary counseling for T2D remains grossly under-investigated in this region. The aim of this study was to assess the frequency and determinants of use of dietary counseling services by T2D patients in Lebanon and recommend corrective measures that may guide the planning, organization and delivery of care for chronic diseases in general and diabetes care in particular. Methods A non-experimental cross-sectional design was utilized to survey outpatients with T2D in two major health centers in Lebanon. Patients diagnosed with T2D were invited to complete a questionnaire consisting of five sections: socio-demographic characteristics, disease attributes, patients’ perceptions regarding T2D management, practice of lifestyle modifications, and referral by a physician to a dietitian. The outcome of interest was the use of dietary counseling services by T2D patients at least once since their diagnosis. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the frequency and determinants of dietary counseling services utilization. Results A total of 332 T2D patients completed the questionnaire (response rate 94.6%). Although 75% of study participants believed that dietitians can assist them in changing their dietary habits, only 38% had consulted with a dietitian. Among study participants, only 34% were referred to a dietitian by their physician. The main determinants of the use of dietary counseling services were referral by a physician (OR: 112.25; 95% CI = 42.74-294.84), the presence of outpatient social or private health insurance (OR: 5.86; 95% CI = 2.40-14.25) and the belief that a dietitian can assist in changing dietary habits (OR: 3.74; 95% CI = 1.33-10.54). Conclusions The findings of this study show suboptimal use of dietary counseling services by T2D patients in Lebanon. Key determinants were physicians’ referral, financial support for outpatient care, and patients’ belief in the usefulness of dietary counseling. Suggested interventions entail enhancing the planning and organization of care through inter-professional collaboration between physicians and dietitians; promoting public financing for high quality outpatient care that includes dietary counseling; and promoting the value of dietary counseling and improving the public image of dietitians.

Abstract:Background: Diabetes is becoming more prevalent in undeveloped countries, what is known about self-care practice is insignificant, like self-monitoring of blood glucose, balanced diet, Medication adherence, and exercise. For people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, exercise is usually one of the first control measures recommended. These practices are considered as the basis of diabetes management. Objctive: The study goal is to assess the awareness of type 2 diabetic patients about the importance of exercise and diet on diabetes type 2. Methods: A cross-sectional observational survey study that was carried out in western Province, Saudi Arabia. A questionnaires were used to ask about the background information and patients' demographics, self-monitoring of blood glucose, eating and drinking habits, exercise habits, and beliefs about the effectiveness of diet and exercise on blood glucose. Results: A total of 568 type 2 of diabetic patients. The average age of the participants was 51.89 ± 12.82 years, 53.5% were females, 89.8% were educated, 81.2% were married, and 30.1% were from Jeddah city. 30.3 % of patients did not practice healthy habits, and 43 % did not exercise, even though 90 % believed that exercise and diet had a positive impact on glucose level in the blood.Male patients showed considerably a higher percentage of those who continued to engage in unhealthy habits such as "smoking, eating fast food, eating sugars, or drinking soft drinks. Conclusion: A significant proportion of Saudi diabetic patients did not follow a healthy diet and exercise on a regular basis. Health policymakers should conduct effective health education sessions for diabetic patients on the importance of a healthy diet and exercise in diabetes management.

Abstract:Background A correct estimate of the tracheal tube insertion depth can prevent complications, including endobronchial intubation and vocal cord trauma. We evaluated a new topographical method for endotracheal tube positioning relative to the carina, using a well-known prior topographical method for comparison. Methods One hundred adult (male 50, female 50) patients were studied. The comparison topographic length (in cm) was measured by adding the distance between the right mouth corner and the right mandibular angle to the distance between the right mandibular angle and the center of the sternal manubrium. The new endotracheal tube insertion depth (in cm) was determined by adding the distance between the right mouth corner and the vocal cords, measured with the endotracheal tube itself, to the distance between the thyroid prominence and the manubriosternal joint, and then subtracting 4 cm. After intubation, the endotracheal tube was positioned properly at the right mouth corner and the endotracheal tube tip was evaluated using a fiberoptic bronchoscope at the carina. Results The distances from the tip of the endotracheal tube to the carina were not significantly different between the methods in the same gender. However, our method allowed endotracheal tube tip placement between 3 cm and 5 cm, above the carina more frequently than the prior method in males. Conclusions The new topographical method can be used as a guide to positioning the endotracheal tubes.

Abstract:Aim: The management of type 2 diabetes mellitus is affected by the presence of comorbidities. This meta-analysis aimed to determine how likely it is for individuals with type 2 diabetes in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) to be living with additional chronic health conditions. Methods: We searched for studies published from January 2010 to December 2020 in PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE®, Cochrane CENTRAL, Scopus, and Web of Science. Studies of adults with type 2 diabetes in the MENA region were included. We performed a random-effects meta-analysis of single proportions to calculate each comorbidity's overall prevalence/co-prevalence. Results: Statistically significant co-prevalence was detected at p < 0.01 for angina (pooled proportion: 0.24, 95% CI: 0.06, 0.49), cerebrovascular accident (pooled proportion: 0.16, 95% CI: 0.08, 0.26), coronary artery disease (pooled proportion: 0.25, 95% CI: 0.16, 0.35), coronary heart disease (pooled proportion: 0.05, 95% CI: 0.01, 0.12), peripheral vascular disease (pooled proportion: 0.19, 95% CI: 0.13, 0.26), hypertension (pooled proportion: 0.56, 95% CI: 0.43, 0.69), renal impairment (pooled proportion: 0.19, 95% CI: 0.10, 0.29), in addition to hyperlipidemia and overweight/obesity. Conclusion: There is evidence of co-prevalence of several comorbidities in patients with type 2 diabetes. This highlights the importance of enhancing communication among healthcare professionals to develop the optimal management plan for each patient.
Recommendations for management of diabetes during Ramadan: update 2020, applying the principles of the ADA/EASD consensus

Abstract:Fasting the Holy month of Ramadan constitutes one of the five pillars of the Muslim faith. Although there is some evidence that intermittent fasting during Ramadan may be of benefit in losing weight and cardiometabolic risk factors, there is no strong evidence these benefits apply to people with diabetes. The American Diabetes Association/European Association for the Study of Diabetes consensus recommendations emphasize the importance of patient factors and comorbidities when choosing diabetes medications including the presence of comorbidities, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, heart failure, chronic kidney disease, hypoglycemia risk, weight issues and costs. Structured education and pre-Ramadan counseing are key components to successful management of patients with diabetes. These should cover important aspects like glycemic targets, self-monitoring of blood glucose, diet, physical activity including Taraweeh prayers, medication and dose adjustment, side effects and when to break the fast. The decision cycle adapted for the specific situation of Ramadan provides an aid for such an assessment. Children with type 1 diabetes should strongly be advised not to fast due to the high risk of acute complications such as hypoglycemia and probably diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), although there is very little evidence that DKA is increased in Ramadan. Pregnant women with diabetes or gestational diabetes should be advised to avoid fasting because of possible negative maternal and fetal outcomes. Hypoglycemia is a common concern during Ramadan fasting. To prevent hypoglycemic and hyperglycemic events, we recommend the adoption of diabetes self-management education and support principles. The use of the emerging technology and continuous glucose monitoring during Ramadan could help to recognize hypoglycemic and hyperglycemic complications related to omission and/or medication adjustment during fasting; however, the cost represents a significant barrier.

Abstract:Background Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), heart failure (HF), chronic kidney disease (CKD), and obesity are associated with increased morbidity and mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Nonetheless, their prevalence among patients with T2DM in Saudi Arabia (SA) remains unknown. As current guidelines recommend, these comorbidities require adding certain antidiabetic agents with cardiorenal benefits. However, the prescribers' adherence to these recommendations remains unclear. Methods A two-center retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted including adult patients (≥18 years) with T2DM admitted to hospital or seen at outpatient clinics between January and December 2020. Patients were classified into two groups based on the presence or absence of ASCVD. Patients with no prior ASCVD history were further classified based on the 10-year ASCVD risk estimation. Endpoints of interest included the prevalence of ASCVD, HF, CKD, and obesity in patients with T2DM. We also evaluated the characteristics of the utilized antidiabetic agents, statin, and aspirin therapies.. Results Of the 1,218 included patients with T2DM, the majority were female (57.0 %), and aged 45–64 years (53.0 %) with a mean age of 59.3 ± 13.1 years. Hypertension and dyslipidemia were the most prevalent comorbidities (67.7 % and 69.0 %, respectively). Among all patients, 18.6 % had an established ASCVD and the prevalence of HF, CKD, and obesity were 5.1 %, 8.7 %, and 58.3 %, respectively. The most common types of ASCVD witnessed were revascularization (42.3 %), myocardial infarction (36.6 %), and stroke (33.9 %); with an increased prevalence of ASCVD as the age increases (52.8 % at age ≥ 65 years). In the non‐ASCVD group, the 10-year ASCVD risk was intermediate or high in 62.7 % of these patients. The rates of utilization of guidelines-recommended therapies were 83.6 % for metformin, 9.4 % for GLP-1 RA, 10.8 % for SGLT2i, 35.2 % for aspirin alone or in combination with clopidogrel, and 79.7 % for statin therapy. Conclusions ASCVD, HF, CKD, and obesity are common complications in patients with T2DM in SA, with low overall utilization of the recommended guidelines-recommended medical therapies. Multimodal strategies should be utilized to assess T2DM and its complications, and to improve prescribers' adherence to guidelines-recommended therapies.

Improving the Working Efficiency of a Triboelectric Nanogenerator by the Semimetallic PEDOT:PSS Hole Transport Layer and Its Application in Self-Powered Active Acetylene Gas Sensing.

Abstract:Herein we report an enhanced triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) based on the contact-separation mode between a patterned film of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with a semimetallic elastomer of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and a nylon fiber film. The addition of ethylene glycol to the PEDOT:PSS film improves the functionality of the TENG significantly, yielding promising applicability in both indoor and outdoor (i.e., under sunlight) environments, with the maximum instantaneous power of 0.09 mW (indoors) and 0.2 mW (outdoors) for the load resistance of 3.8 MΩ. The device can also generate 11.2 V and 0.08 μA cm-2 in response to the forearm movement of a human. Additionally, by replacing the bare nylon fiber in the TENG design with a Ag@ZnO/nylon fiber film, a self-powered active sensor (triboelectric nanogenerator-based sensor; TENS) has been realized to detect acetylene (C2H2) gas. The TENS exhibits excellent sensitivity of 70.9% (indoors) and 89% (outdoors) to C2H2 gas of 1000 ppm concentration. The proposed approach for harvesting energy and sensing can be advantageous in practical applications and may stimulate new research that will enhance nanogenerators as well as wearable, self-powered active sensors.
Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice Regarding Diabetes Mellitus Among Type 2 Diabetic Patients Attending Primary Health Care Centers in the Jazan Region of Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Background Diabetes mellitus is a disease whose dramatic increase in prevalence worldwide poses a global health crisis. Saudi Arabia has the seventh highest rate of diabetes in the world and the second highest rate in the Middle East. The incidence of diabetes has risen due to insufficient knowledge, attitude, and practice surrounding the disease. Saudis' quality of life has decreased due to the recent rise in diabetes-related mortality and illnesses. Hence, leading healthy lives requires patients to have positive attitudes and self-awareness, which will eventually contribute to reducing diabetes mellites-related complications. Methods A cross-sectional study among patients with type 2 diabetes mellites (T2DM) in the Jazan region of Saudi Arabia was conducted to assess Saudi adults' knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) regarding the disease. The patients participated in the study by filling in a questionnaire. Data analysis was carried out using R software, version 4.0.5 (R Studio: Integrated Development for R, Boston, MA) and the analysis included general sample demographics. KAP scores were the dependent variables. Following the sample description, regression analysis was performed to examine the adjusted relationships between KAP factors and independent variables. The impact of all independent variables on KAP variables was examined using multiple linear regression analysis. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered significant, and the beta coefficient was applied to estimate the associations between the independent variables and the KAP variables. Results A total of 424 participants were involved in this study, with 194 male participants and 230 female participants. The mean duration of having T2DM was 7.63 ± 7.19 years. More than half of the study participants had a degree (58.49%), and nearly half were employed (42.45%). Married participants had higher knowledge and attitude scores than single and divorced or widowed participants (9.19 ± 3.38, 80.14 ± 14.72, respectively). In comparison, divorced or widowed participants had higher practice scores than single and married participants (16.35 ± 7.42). Participants with higher education attainment had higher knowledge and attitude scores than those with no degree (9.54 ± 3.39, 80.58 ± 17.57, respectively), whereas participants with no degree demonstrated higher practice scores (16.85 ± 8.3) than those with degrees. In examining the study participants' KAP scores, we found knowledge to be insufficient in 51.2% and sufficient in 48.8% of the participants. Of the participants, 7.8% were found to have negative attitude levels and 92.2% were found to have positive attitude levels. Finally, study participants' practice levels were found to be negative in 24.8% and positive in 75.2% of participants. Conclusions This study revealed that patients have gaps in their knowledge, attitude, and practice in regard to T2DM. In this study, associations and correlations were established between KAP scores and the sociodemographic characteristics of the patients. The findings of this study could be helpful to policymakers, decision-makers, health care professionals, and patient advocacy groups in developing interventions to improve the health outcomes in T2DM patients.

Effectiveness of Diabetes Self-Management Educational Programs For Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients In Middle East Countries: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Aim This review study aimed to determine the effectiveness and factors affecting the success of DSME programs in T2DM patients living in ME countries. Methods An extensive manual literature search was conducted using PubMed and Google Scholar for clinical trials assessing the effect of diabetes self-management education (DSME) for type 2 diabetes mellitus patients in Middle East countries. Information from the included studies was summarized in relation to study population, sample size, duration of follow-up, characteristics of DSME program, and follow-up time, besides in addition to parameters used in assessment, results, and conclusions. The risk of bias in the included studies was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool. The effect of DSME on clinical and patient-reported outcomes was measured by calculation of the percentage of DSME studies that produce a significant improvement in these outcomes for patients in intervention group as compared to those in control group. Additionally, the effect of DSME on each clinical outcome was assessed by calculating the mean for the absolute effect of DSME on that outcome. Results Twelve studies were included in this review. Heterogeneity was found among included studies in terms of DSME program characteristics, the enrolled patients, duration of follow-up, assessment methods, and obtained outcomes. All clinical glycemic outcomes (glycosylated hemoglobin, fasting, and non-fasting blood glucose), lipid profile (total cholesterol and triglycerides), and body mass index were significantly improved for patients in intervention group as compared to those in control group in at least 60% of the included studies. All patients' reported outcomes (medication adherence, self-management behavior, knowledge, self-efficacy, health belief and quality of life) were significantly improved by the DSME program. Conclusion DSME programs are highly effective in improving glycemic control, lipid profile and BMI, and modestly effective in improving BP. Thus, they can reduce the risks of developing diabetes complications. Patient diabetes knowledge, DSM behaviors, adherence to medications, self-efficacy, and quality of life can also be significantly improved by DSME.

Abstract:Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a worldwide public health issue. Diabetes has been developing dramatically among young individuals, and childhood onset is now becoming a global epidemic. Data on DM knowledge and attitude among Saudi school pupils in the western region of the country are few. Therefore, this study has been undertaken to assess the level of knowledge and attitude of school students toward DM in the western region of Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 850 school students in the western region of Saudi Arabia from October to December 2022. The data were collected using an online questionnaire and analyzed using Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS) (version 23.0; IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Armonk, NY). Results: This study included 850 pupils in total. Females represented most of them (82.1%). The participants' ages ranged from 10 to 18 years, with the majority of them between the ages of 16 and 18. Self-reported diabetes among students was 9.5%, and the most prevalent type was type 1 diabetes. Regarding the physical activity of the participants, 22.6% of them conduct physical exercise for a duration of more than 30 minutes per day, with a significantly higher percentage among non-diabetics, while 34.6% of the diabetics do not exceed 20 minutes of daily exercise, with a P value of 0.017. School students showed a lack of information about symptoms and complications of DM where only diabetics could mention them when compared with non-diabetic students, with P values of <0.001 for each of them. Diabetic students listed DM risk factors, such as genetics, obesity, and smoking, more frequently than non-diabetics; the corresponding P values were 0.004, 0.001, and 0.041. Unfortunately, more than 32% of diabetic students had the misconception that DM is not a controllable disease. According to the majority of diabetic students, soft drinks raise blood sugar levels. The Internet was the main source of information about DM. Conclusion: The school students' understanding of DM was generally suboptimal. Their understanding of the symptoms, effects, and management of diabetes was low. Most school students in this cohort perceived that DM could not be controlled. Given the high rate of self-reported diabetes in the western region of Saudi Arabia, it is strongly advised to educate children about DM at an early age. Every student at school should adopt a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet and regular exercise, and they should be closely observed by their teachers and parents. Family physicians should regularly check the adherence of diabetic children to their antidiabetic medications and ensure this important point with their caregivers. Psychological assessment and counseling are highly recommended for all diabetic children.

Abstract:Background: Mental stress plagued type II diabetes (T2DM) patients. The psychological and emotional issues related to diabetes and its effects include depression, anxiety, poor diet, and hypoglycemia fear. Aim: Compare the impact of diabetes on depression and anxiety in Egyptian and Saudi diabetics. Methods: The diabetes, gastroenterology, and hepatology sections of University of Ha'il Clinic, KSA, and the Theodor Bilharz Research Institute, Egypt, conducted this retrospective study. Everyone gave informed consent before participating. Interviews with male and female outpatients and inpatients were conducted from June 2021 to December 2022. The self-administered validated Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) scale measured sociodemographic characteristics and symptoms of depression and anxiety. Results: In patients with diabetes, the prevalence of depression was higher in KSA [34.8%] than in Egypt [18%], while anxiety was higher in Egypt [40%] than in KSA [29.1%]. Most depressed patients were 31–55 years old (61.2%) from KSA and 97.8% (41–55 years old) from Egypt. Female anxiety was 70.7% in KSA and 51.0% in Egypt, with no significant difference. The duration of diabetes in depressed patients was 5–10 years ([46.9%, Saudis] vs. [57.8%, Egyptians]), while anxious patients (5–10 years [39.0%, Saudis] vs. >20 years [65.0%, Egyptians]) were mainly type-2. Most depressive patients had an HbA1c (59.2%) from 7–10% (Saudis) and 77.8% [>10% Egyptians] compared to anxiety patients (46.3%) and 48.0% [>10% Egyptians]. Depressed and anxious patients from both nations had higher glucose, triglycerides, and cholesterol levels. Saudis and Egyptians with obesity had higher rates of sadness (75.5% vs. 68.9%) and anxiety (82.9% vs. 69.0%). Treatment adherence and serum glucose monitoring were not significantly different from depression in diabetes individuals in both ethnicities. Conclusions: Anxiety was more common among Egyptian patients because of overcrowding, working whole days to fulfill life requirements, and the unavailability of health insurance to all citizens. Meanwhile, in KSA, obesity, unhealthy food, and less exercise reflect the high percentage of depression among patients with diabetes. The detection of depression and anxiety in the context of DM should be critical for the physical health and quality of life of Saudi and Egyptian diabetics. Further investigation is warranted to encompass anxiety and depression within the scope of future research.

Abstract:One in 10 people worldwide, or 537 million adults aged 20 to 79 years, have diabetes mellitus (DM), a serious health issue. This startling number is anticipated to rise to 643 million by 2030 and a mind-boggling 783 million by 2045. Concerningly, the disproportionate burden of this disease is highlighted by the fact that more than 75% of adults with DM live in low- and middle-income countries. DM has an impact that goes beyond only its prevalence; in 2021, it caused 6.7 million fatalities, or 1 death every 5 seconds. [ 1 ] Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) accounts for 90% of all diabetes cases and is distinguished by insufficient insulin secretion by pancreatic islet cells, tissue insulin resistance, and an insufficient compensatory insulin secretory response. Abstract:Background: The increasing adoption of sedentary lifestyles and cultural shifts has fostered unhealthy habits and decreased physical activity, consequently exacerbating the prevalence of diabetes. Diabetes is currently one of the top 10 diseases worldwide, contributing significantly to both mortality and morbidity. Since diabetes hinges on self-care, possessing the right knowledge, attitude, and habits related to the disease is paramount. This study, therefore, aims to examine the knowledge, attitude, and practice of diabetes among the population of Saudi Arabia. Methods: The study utilized data from a cross-sectional study conducted via an online self-reported questionnaire among the general population of Saudi Arabia. The study primarily used univariate and multivariable regression data analyses. Univariate analysis was employed to compile social and demographic statistics frequencies, while One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to assess mean differences in knowledge, attitudes, and practices scores. Furthermore, a multivariable linear regression analysis was executed to identify factors associated with knowledge, attitudes, and practices. Results: The mean score for diabetes knowledge was 17.79 (SD = 5.39, range: 0–29), with an overall accuracy rate of 61.34%. The mean attitude score for diabetes was 2.33 (SD = 1.91, range: 0–7), while the mean score for diabetes practices was 2.58 (SD = 1.28, range: 0–4). The multivariate analyses reveal distinct variations in knowledge, attitudes, and practices of diabetes among participants based on their gender, education, marital status, income, diabetes patient status, and having a medical field-related education. Conclusion: High knowledge scores do not necessarily equate to positive attitudes and practices related to diabetes. There is need for intensified care and the implementation of specialized educational programs that emphasize the importance of having the right attitude and engaging in the good diabetes practices.

Abstract:We determined the morphological and immunological properties of encapsulated strains of Staphylococcus isolated from clinical specimens. Capsular polysaccharide antigens extracted from cell surface fractions induced resistance in mice against challenge with the homologous Staphylococcus strain. Hyperimmune rabbit serum prepared using these strains passively protected mice against challenge with only the homologous strain. The protective activity was absorbed with homologous capsular polysaccharide, but not with heterologous organisms, and the nature of the antibody was that of IgM. The capsular vaccine prepared by us was successful in preventing staphylococcal infections. In addition, because of the immunoglobulin treatment, mice were protected from infection with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains. We detected encapsulation in these strains by electron microscopy although no capsules were detected by light microscopy with negative staining. Understanding microbiology is often very challenging for visually impaired students, and there have not been significant improvements in the teaching aids used for educational purposes. However, the morphology of staphylococci can be identified using tactile graphics. Microbiology education is important for visually impaired students who aspire to become medical professionals.

Abstract:Diabetes, a prevalent chronic metabolic disorder, presents a considerable global health challenge. It is marked by impaired insulin production or reduced insulin sensitivity, leading to elevated blood glucose levels that have detrimental effects on multiple organs and systems. This condition increases the risk of developing severe comorbidities, including cerebrovascular accidents, ischemic heart diseases, and renal diseases. [ 1 ] According to the International Diabetes Federation [ 2 ] globally more than half a billion people aged 20 to 79 years are currently living with diabetes, which constitutes more than 10% of this age group, while 1.2 million children and adolescents have type 1 diabetes. While premature death from main noncommunicable diseases is declining between the years 2000 to 2016, those from diabetes in the same period witnessed a 5% increase. [ 3 ] In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where 4.3 million are living with the condition, [ 2 ] diabetes is a serious problem to patients, their families, and the healthcare system. [ 4 ] More than half of diabetics in Africa, South–East Asia and the Western Pacific are undiagnosed. Generally, half of adults suffering from diabetes are not diagnosed. [ 3 ] Addressing the complexities of diabetes management and understanding its impact on various health aspects are crucial steps towards combating this significant public health issue and improving the overall well-being of those affected.
