Abstract:We examined two aspects of temperamental approach in early infancy, positive reactivity and anger, and their unique and combined influences on maternal reports of child surgency and attention focusing at 4years of age. One hundred and fourteen infants were observed for their positive reactions to novel stimuli at 4months, and their anger expressions during arm restraint at 9months. Child surgency and attention focusing at age 4years were assessed by maternal report. Infants who expressed more anger to restraint were rated higher in surgency during early childhood relative to infants who expressed less anger. The effects of positive reactivity to novelty on attention focusing were moderated by anger to restraint. These findings suggest that infant temperamental approach tendencies are multifaceted and have both unique and combined influences on later maternal report of attention and social behavior.
Anger and Approach Motivation in Infancy: Relations to Behavioral Development in Early Childhood

Abstract:The. relations among infants' anger, approach behaviors, frontal EEG asymmetry, and effortful control and behavior problems were examined within the context of a longitudinal study of temperament. Two hundred and ninety-one four-month-old infants were, selected from temperament patterns to novel stimuli. Infants' anger was observed during arm restraint at both 4 and 9 months of age. Approach behaviors during an unpredictable toy task and baseline frontal EEG asymmetry were assessed at 9 months of age. Inhibitory control during a Go/No-Go task at age 4 and parental rating of temperament and behavior problems at age 2, and 4 were evaluated. The results indicated that High anger-prone infants at 4 months with left, - but not right, frontal EEG asymmetry showed more approach behaviors and less inhibitory control relative to low anger-prone infants. In positive reactivity temperament pattern, 9-month high anger-prone infants had higher effortful control and lower internalizing behaviors than low anger-prone infants.
The perceived quality of maternal care during childhood shapes attentional bias to infant faces in parents and nonparents.

Abstract:While research has shown that the attentional bias to infant faces predicts the quality of infant care, the antecedents of this cognitive process have been less established. In particular, it remains unknown whether the attentional bias to infant faces might be affected by the interplay between different factors, including memories of past experiences of care, adults' sex, and the experience of parenthood. To extend previous results, we examined the attentional bias to infant faces in a mixed sample of parents (<i>n</i> = 99) and nonparents (<i>n</i> = 102), and whether it varied in relation to parental status, sex, the quality of past experiences of care, and the interactions between these factors. A modified go/no-go task was used to compare the effect of adult and infant faces in retaining adults' attention. Memories of past experiences of paternal and maternal care were collected using the short form of the Italian version of the Parental Acceptance-Rejection scale. Results confirmed that infant faces induced greater attentional interference compared to adult faces. A heightened attention to all types of faces was found in parents versus nonparent. Women, as compared to men, were slower in the task performance, and allocated more attention to infant versus adult faces. Consistent with previous evidence, the attentional prioritization of infant faces varied in relation to previous experiences of care with one's own mother; individuals who remembered a more accepting maternal care allocated more attention to infant versus adult faces. Parental status did not modulate this effect, but sex of participants did. Grounded in the interpersonal parental acceptance-rejection theory (IPARTheory), this study provides new insights for discerning processes that might regulate global adult caregiving. Abstract:Infant facial cues play a critical role in eliciting care and nurturance from an adult caregiver. Using an attentional capture paradigm we investigated attentional processing of adult and infant emotional facial expressions in a sample of mothers (n = 29) and non-mothers (n = 37) to determine whether infant faces were associated with greater task interference. Responses to infant target stimuli were slower than adult target stimuli in both groups. This effect was modulated by parental status, such that mothers compared to non-mothers showed longer response times to infant compared to adult faces. Both groups also responded more slowly to emotional faces, an effect that was more marked for infant emotional faces. Finally, it was found that greater levels of mothers' self-reported parental distress was associated with less task interference when processing infant faces. These findings indicate that for adult women, infant faces in general and emotional infant faces in particular, preferentially engage attention compared to adult faces. However, for mothers, infant faces appear to be more salient in general. Therefore, infant faces may constitute a special class of social stimuli. We suggest that alterations in attentional processing in motherhood may constitute an adaptive behavioural change associated with becoming a parent.

Abstract:Background: Attentional bias toward infant faces is associated with parental sensitivity and supports the infant-caregiver attachment relationship, ultimately fostering child health outcomes. However, experience-related determinants of parents' attentional bias to infant faces have been poorly investigated. We examined attentional bias to infant versus adult faces in a sample of same-sex mothers (N = 76), and whether it varied depending on maternal involvement in childcare and the perceived quality of past experiences of care. Method: A Go/no-Go attentional task was used to compare the effects of infant and adult faces in retaining attention. Maternal involvement in childcare was measured using items addressing nurturing behaviors. Memories of past experiences of care were collected using the short-form version of the Parental Acceptance-Rejection scale. Results: Results confirmed that infant faces induced greater attentional bias compared to adult faces. More involved mothers were more biased, in terms of attention, to infant versus adult faces. Attentional bias to infant versus adult faces increased as mothers felt more rejected by their own fathers during childhood. Discussion: Our findings suggested that attentional bias to infant faces might be associated with past experiences of care and direct commitment in childcare in same-sex mothers. Robust and accurate empirical findings on same-sex parent families are essential to inform social policies supporting these families' well being.

Abstract:Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of chronic total occlusion (CTO) is one of the greatest challenges in interventional cardiology. The procedural success rate is relatively low, mainly due to guidewire failure to cross the occlusion. An effective wiring technique is the key to the success of CTO-PCIs. However, success or failure of wire crossing is mostly dependent on an operator's experience and skill. To improve the success rate of CTO-PCI in current interventional cardiology, several techniques were introduced in the Japanese CTO club. In this article, some advanced wiring techniques developed by the Japanese CTO club will be explored.

Abstract:Anger is a negative emotion associated with approach motivation and may influence children's attention preference. Three experiments examined the effect of anger on the attentional biases accompanying reward versus punishment cues in Chinese 5- and 6-year-olds. Experiment 1 tested children who were prone to report angry feelings in an unfair game. Experiment 2 measured children who were rated by parents and teachers for temperamental anger. Experiment 3 explored children who reported angry feelings in a frustrating attention task with rigged and noncontingent feedback after controlling for temperament anger. Results suggested that both the angry and anger-prone children were faster to engage attention toward the reward cues than toward the punishment cues in the three experiments. Furthermore, the angry children in the frustrating attention task (and those with poor attention focusing by parental report) were slower in disengaging attention away from the reward versus punishment cues (especially after negative feedback). Results support the approach motivation of anger, which can facilitate children's attention toward the appetitive approach-related information. The findings are discussed in terms of the adaptive and maladaptive function of anger.

Abstract:Looking at caregivers' faces is important for early social development, and there is a concomitant increase in neural correlates of attention to familiar versus novel faces in the first 6 months. However, by 12 months of age brain responses may not differentiate between familiar and unfamiliar faces. Traditional group‐based analyses do not examine whether these 'null' findings stem from a true lack of preference within individual infants, or whether groups of infants show individually strong but heterogeneous preferences for familiar versus unfamiliar faces. In a preregistered proof‐of‐principle study, we applied Neuroadaptive Bayesian Optimisation (NBO) to test how individual infants' neural responses vary across faces differing in familiarity. Sixty‐one 5–12‐month‐olds viewed faces resulting from gradually morphing a familiar (primary caregiver) into an unfamiliar face. Electroencephalography (EEG) data from fronto‐central channels were analysed in real‐time. After the presentation of each face, the Negative central (Nc) event‐related potential (ERP) amplitude was calculated. A Bayesian Optimisation algorithm iteratively selected the next stimulus until it identified the stimulus eliciting the strongest Nc for that infant. Attrition (15%) was lower than in traditional studies (22%). Although there was no group‐level Nc‐difference between familiar versus unfamiliar faces, an optimum was predicted in 85% of the children, indicating individual‐level attentional preferences. Traditional analyses based on infants' predicted optimum confirmed NBO can identify subgroups based on brain activation. Optima were not related to age and social behaviour. NBO suggests the lack of overall familiar/unfamiliar‐face attentional preference in middle infancy is explained by heterogeneous preferences, rather than a lack of preference within individual infants.

Abstract:Sustained attention (SA) is an endogenous form of attention that emerges in infancy and reflects cognitive engagement and processing. SA is critical for learning and has been measured using different methods during screen‐based and interactive contexts involving social and nonsocial stimuli. How SA differs by measurement method, context, and stimuli across development in infancy is not fully understood. This 2‐year longitudinal study examines attention using one measure of overall looking behavior and three measures of SA—mean look duration, percent time in heart rate‐defined SA, and heart rate change during SA—in N = 53 infants from 1 to 24 months across four unique task conditions: social videos, nonsocial videos, social interactions (face‐to‐face play), and nonsocial interactions (toy engagement). Results suggest that developmental changes in attention differ by measurement method, task context (screen or interaction), and task stimulus (social or nonsocial). During social interactions, overall looking and look durations declined after age 3–4 months, whereas heart rate‐defined attention measures remained stable. All SA measures were greater for videos than for live interaction conditions throughout the first 6 months, but SA to social and nonsocial stimuli within each task context were equivalent. In the second year of life, SA measured with look durations was greater for social videos compared to other conditions, heart rate‐defined SA was greater for social videos compared to nonsocial interactions, and heart rate change during SA was similar across conditions. Together, these results suggest that different measures of attention to social and nonsocial stimuli may reflect unique developmental processes and are important to compare and consider together, particularly when using infant attention as a marker of typical or atypical development. Research Highlights Attention measure, context, and social content uniquely differentiate developmental trajectories of attention in the first 2 years of life. Overall looking to caregivers during dyadic social interactions declines significantly from 4 to 6 months of age while sustained attention (SA) to caregivers remains stable. Heart rate‐defined SA generally differentiates stimulus context where infants show greater SA while watching videos than while engaging with toys.

Abstract:Parents play a significant role in directing infant’s attention to environmental stimuli via joint attention. We hypothesized that infants whose parents provide more bids for joint attention will display a more complex neural response when viewing social scenes. Sixty-one 8-month-old infants underwent electroencephalography (EEG) while viewing videos of joint-and parallel-play and participated in a parent-infant free play interaction. EEG data was analyzed using multiscale entropy, which quantifies moment-to-moment neural variability. Free play interactions were coded for parent alternating gaze, a behavioral mechanism for directing attention to environmental cues. We found a significant positive association between parent alternating gaze and neural entropy in frontal and central brain regions. These results suggest a relationship between parent behavior and infant neural mechanisms that regulate social attention, underlying the importance of parent cues in the formation of neural networks in infancy.

Abstract:As infants grow, they develop greater attentional control during interactions with others, shifting from patterns of attention primarily driven by caregivers (exogenous) to those that are more self-directed (endogenous). The ability to endogenously control attention during infancy is thought to reflect ongoing brain development and is influenced by patterns of joint attention between infant and caregiver. However, whether measures of infant attentional control and caregiver behavior during infant-caregiver interactions relate to patterns of infant brain activity is unknown and key for informing developmental models of attentional control. Using data from 43 infant-caregiver dyads, we quantified patterns of visual attention with dyadic, head-mounted eye tracking during infant-caregiver play and associated them with the duration of infant EEG microstate D/4 measured during rest. Importantly, microstate D/4 is a scalp potential topography thought to reflect the organization and function of attention-related brain networks. We found that microstate D/4 associated positively with infant-led joint attention rate but did not associate with caregiver-led joint attention rate, suggesting that supporting infants' initiatives in joint attention during play may be critical for the neurobiological development of attentional control. Further, we found that microstate D/4 associated negatively with infant attention shifts rate and positively with infant sustained attention duration, suggesting that increased stability of microstate D/4 may reflect maturation of attentional control and its underlying neural substrates. Together, our findings provide novel insights into how infant attentional control abilities and infant-caregiver visual behavior during play are associated with the spatial and temporal dynamics of infant brain activity.

Abstract:In addition to an assimilatory sulfite reductase, studies of cultures of Clostridium pasteurianum supplemented with methionine, cysteine, and 35SO42- provides evidence for another reductase which is induced by SO32-. This inducible reductase appears to be dissimaltory because of the copious sulfide production arising when the cells are grown on SO32-. Cysteine can repress the assimilatory sulfite reductase but does not affect the inducible reductase. During late logarithmic growth on 1 mM SO42- + 10mM cysteine, depression of the inducible reductase occurred along with increased sulfide production. The presence of 1 mM cysteine and (or) 1 mM cysteine and (or) 1 mM methionine does not affect the inverse sulfur isotope effect for evolved H2S. However, 5 and 10 mM cysteine reduce the maximum delta34S value for released H2S from +40 to 10%. A small conversion of cysteine to H2S by C. pasteurianum occurs, but only in the stationary phase.
Association between caregiver and infant visual neurocognition

Abstract:Previous work has shown that caregiver attention shapes visual cognition in infants through dyadic interactions. Is this association measurable when visual cognition is objectively measured in caregivers and infants using comparable experimental paradigms? In the current study, we presented infants (N = 86) and caregivers (N = 78) with age-specific variants of the same preferential looking visual cognition task to investigate whether caregiver visual cognition was associated with their infants' visual cognition. In each trial of the task, two side-by-side flashing displays of coloured shapes were presented. On the 'unchanging' side, the colours of the shapes remained the same. On the 'changing' side, the colour of one shape changed after each flash. Load was varied by changing the number of shapes across trials (low, medium, and high loads). We extracted looking dynamics using video recordings and brain function using functional near-infrared spectroscopy as both infants and caregivers engaged with the task. Change preference (CP) score, which represented the amount of time spent looking at the changing side divided by the total looking duration, showed a load-dependent modulation for both infants and caregivers. Both groups showed the highest CP scores at the low load. Further, higher caregiver CP scores was associated with higher infant CP scores at the low load. Both infants and caregivers engaged canonical regions of the fronto-parietal network involved in visual cognition. Critically, higher caregiver CP scores were associated with greater activation in the left superior parietal lobule in younger infants, a region involved in allocating visuo-spatial attention and working memory maintenance. Further, there was spatial overlap between performance-dependent regions in the right parietal cortex in caregivers and younger infants. Our findings provide first evidence of a heritability-related visual neurocognitive association between caregivers and their children in the first year of life.
Neural Markers of Attention at 6 Months Associate With Later Attentional Control Performance

Abstract:Attentional control is key to the development of executive functions. Previous research indicates that individual differences in attentional control behaviour may be stable from 6 months. Here, we analyse electroencephalogram data collected from 59 6‐month‐olds to gain insights into the neural processes underlying attentional control in infancy. First, we examine the neural activity preceding distinct looking behaviours in an attentional control task at 6 months. Second, we test whether those neural markers show predictive associations to behavioural measures of attentional control (Freeze‐Frame task) and executive function (A‐not‐B task) in the same infants at 9 months. Whilst our data do not show evidence that 6–9 Hz power is implicated in attentional control at 6 months, or that the P1 ERP component plays a role in our attentional control task, we do find evidence that corroborates and extends research linking 3–6 Hz power to attentional control. At the group level, frontal 3–6 Hz power recorded whilst looking to a central target before the onset of a peripheral distractor was greater during trials where infants subsequently looked to the distractor, compared with trials where they did not look. Higher 3–6 Hz power in trials where the infant did not look to a peripheral distractor was predictive of less distractibility at 9 months, and higher 3 Hz power in trials where infants did look to the distractor strengthened the predictive association from 6‐month EEG to 9‐month behaviour. We suggest 3–6 Hz activity may be sensitive to multiple processes, such as anticipatory attention, and the ability to maintain attention on a target.

Abstract:Most infants exhibit an attentional bias for faces and fearful facial expressions. These biases reduce toward the third year of life, but little is known about the development of the biases beyond early childhood. We used the same methodology longitudinally to assess attention disengagement patterns from nonface control pictures and faces (neutral, happy, and fearful expressions) in a large sample of children at 8, 30, and 60 months ( N = 389/393/492, respectively; N = 72 for data in all three assessment; girls > 45.3% in each assessment). "Face bias" was measured as a difference in disengagement probability (DP) from faces (neutral/happy) versus nonface patterns. "Fear bias" was calculated as a difference in DP for fearful versus happy/neutral faces. At group level, DPs followed a nonlinear longitudinal trajectory in all face conditions, being lowest at 8 months, highest at 30 months, and intermediate at 60 months. Face bias declined between 8 and 30 months, but did not change between 30 and 60 months. Fear bias declined linearly from 8 to 60 months. Individual differences in disengagement were generally not stable across age, but weak correlations were found in face bias between 8- and 60-month, and in DPs between 30- and 60-month ( r s = .22–.41). The results suggest that prioritized attention to faces—that is, a hallmark of infant cognition and a key aspect of human social behavior—follows a nonlinear trajectory in early childhood and may have only weak continuity from infancy to mid childhood. Abstract:We investigated whether adults have attentional bias toward infant faces, whether it is moderated by infant facial expression, and the predictive effect of the adult attachment state on it. One hundred unmarried nulliparous college students [50 men and 50 women; aged 17–24 years ( M = 19.70, SD = 1.35)] were recruited. Each completed a self-report questionnaire—the Chinese version of the State Adult Attachment Measure (SAAM), and a dot-probe task with a stimulus presentation duration of 500 ms, which used 192 black-and-white photographs of 64 people (32 infants and 32 adults; each person displayed three expressions: happy, neutral, and sad) as the experimental stimuli. The results showed that, at the duration of 500 ms, individuals' attentional bias toward infant faces disappeared, regardless of the facial expression. However, when the interaction between avoidant attachment state and face was controlled, the attentional bias was significant again, and the avoidant attachment state negatively predicted individuals' attentional bias toward infant faces. This indicates that at the suprathreshold stage, there are individual differences in the attentional bias toward infant faces, and high avoidant attachment will weaken individuals' attentional bias toward infant faces. This study advances previous studies that focused only on individuals' attention to infant faces occurring at the early processing stage of attention. The results provide direction for interventions; specifically, changing the attachment state of avoidant individuals can affect their attention to infants, which may promote the establishment of parent–child relationships.

Abstract:Development of selective attention during the first year of life is critical to cognitive and socio-emotional skills. It is also a period that the average child’s interactions with their mother dominate their social environment. This study examined how maternal negative affect and an emotion face prime (mother/stranger) jointly effect selective visual attention. Results from linear mixed-effects modeling showed that 9-month olds ( N =70) were faster to find a visual search target after viewing a fearful face (regardless of familiarity) or their mother’s angry face. For mothers with high negative affect, infants’ attention was further impacted by fearful faces, resulting in faster search times. Face emotion interacted with mother’s negative affect, demonstrating a capacity to influence what infants attend in their environment.

Abstract:From early in development, infants process faces in their environment differentially from other items. By around 6 months of age, they are able to orient toward faces in the presence of distractor items. This paper aimed to assess whether this preferential looking toward faces was observable prior to 6 months of age, and whether there were developmental trends. We assessed this using the face pop‐out task, a free viewing eye‐tracking experiment in which infants viewed arrays containing an image of a face, alongside four distractor items. We assessed whether infants at 4, 5, 6 and 7 months (n = 1585 participants) differed in the proportion of first looks, total dwell time, and frequency of fixations to faces compared to other items. All three outcome variables were significantly higher toward faces than toward any of the other items in all the age groups. Moreover, there were age‐related differences across all measures—the older the infants were, the more pronounced their face preferences were. These age‐related differences could not be attributed to differences in data quality, and thus suggest that face preference is observable at 4 months of age but shows a strong development until 6 months.
