Abstract:In the present work, the rutile, anatase and mixed (rutile and anatase) crystal phase TiO(2) powders were irradiated by ultrasound and solar light, respectively, and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were detected through the oxidation reaction from 1,5-diphenyl carbazide (DPCI) to 1,5-diphenyl carbazone (DPCO). The DPCO can be extracted by the mixed solvent of benzene and carbon tetrachloride and the extract liquors display an obvious absorption peak around 563nm. In addition, the influences of (ultrasonic or solar light) irradiation time, TiO(2) addition amount and DPCI concentration on the quantities of generated ROS were also reviewed. The kinds of generated ROS were determined by using several radical scavengers. At last, the researches on the sonocatalytic and photocatalytic degradation of several organic dyes were also performed. It is wished that this paper might offer some important subjects for broadening the applications of sonocatalytic and photocatalytic technologies.

Abstract:Recently, the sonocatalytic technology using various semiconductors combined with ultrasonic irradiation has been received much attention to solve the environmental problems. In this paper, nano-sized titanium dioxide (TiO2) powder as a sonocatalyst was irradiated by ultrasound and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) during sonocatalytic reaction process has been estimated by the method of Oxidation–Extraction Photometry (OEP). That is, the 1,5-diphenylcarbohydrazide (DPCI) can be oxidized by ROS into diphenylcarbonzone (DPCO), which can be extracted by the mixed solution of benzene and carbon tetrachloride and show the great absorbance at 563nm wavelength. The synergistic effect of TiO2 and ultrasonic irradiation was estimated and some influencing factors, such as ultrasonic irradiation time and TiO2 addition amount on the generation of ROS were reviewed. The results indicate that the quantities of generated ROS increase with the increase of ultrasonic irradiation time and TiO2 addition amount. Moreover, the relationship between quantities of generated ROS and DPCI concentration was also studied. And then, several quenchers were used to determine the kind of the generated ROS. At last, the researches on the sonocatalytic degradation of organic dyes and the corresponding reaction kinetics have also been performed, which is found to follow the pseudo first-order kinetics approximately. This paper may offer some important subjects for broadening the applications of sonocatalytic technology.

Abstract:The present study aims to use green synthesized TiO 2 as a photocatalyst in suspended and immobilized form under UV light to efficiently degrade a combination of reactive dyes, namely titan yellow, methyl orange, rhodamine B, and methylene blue. TiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized using Tamarindus indica leaf extract and were utilized to parametrically study photo-degradation at room temperature. The green synthesized NPs were characterized by Powder XRD, SEM, and FTIR techniques to understand the crystalline phase/purity, morphology, and functional groups respectively. The TiO 2 in suspension under UV light showed >90% degradation towards a 10 ppm composite dye at a loading of 1.5 gL −1 , pH 7, and an irradiation time of 120 min. Subsequently, TiO 2 was further immobilized in-situ, on inert supports of perlite granules and glass and studied for catalytic activity in batch and continuous modes. The TiO 2 nanoparticles immobilized on perlite granules and glass showed 59 and 48% degradation in batch operation under the same conditions as in suspended form. In continuous mode, the highest degradation activity was recorded at 2 Lh −1 after 4 passes. Further, kinetic studies reveal that the degradation reaction is best described by Langmuir Hinshelwood kinetics for both suspended and immobilized TiO 2 .

Abstract:In this research work, Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles were prepared from green waste by Wet Chemical method. Titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) precursor is converted to TiO 2 nanoparticles by using the Musa-paradisiaca L. (Banana crop) pseudo stem extract as a capping agent. The non-dopant, anatase phase crystalline TiO 2 nanoparticles were synthesized and characterized by using analytical techniques like TEM, HR-TEM, SAED, BET, FTIR, SEM, EDX, XRD, XPS, DRS, UV-Visible spectrophotometer and Zeta Potential. The green synthesized TiO 2 nanoparticles with band gap energy 2.95 eV were used as a photocatalyst for the degradation of Indigo Carmine (IC) dye under solar radiation with an intensity of 1200*100 lux. Optimization process was carried out for three factors such as catalyst dosage, pH and concentration of the dye solution at constant time. TiO 2 nanoparticles photocatalyst showed 99% degradation efficiency in 30 minutes (min) for the IC dye under optimum condition. This experimental work was confirmed by comparing with the theoretical results obtained from Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The RSM of the quadratic model produces a theoretical layout for the optimization process and provides the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) data which evaluate the importance of each experimental factor. The RSM results are well matched with the R 2 value obtained from the experimental method. The biogenic TiO 2 nanoparticles had greater efficacy in the degradation of IC dye for five cycles of reaction.

Abstract:Natural porous mineral supported (TiO2/diatomite) photocatalyst was prepared via a modified sol–gel method using titanium (IV) butoxide (TBOT) and diatomite. The effect of TBOT dosage on adsorption capacity and photocatalytic activity for Rhodamine B (RhB) solution was investigated. The morphology and elemental distribution were determined by scanning electron microscopy with attached energy-dispersive X-ray detector. The porous and crystalline structures were characterized using nitrogen adsorption–desorption and X-ray diffraction techniques, respectively. The prepared TiO2/diatomite hybrid catalyst has shown relatively even porous structure and dispersion of TiO2 over the surface. This suggests that the diatomite matrix prevented the agglomeration of TiO2 particles. Initially, the surface area and pore volume of the hybrid catalyst were increased by adding TBOT then decreased for dosages higher than 1.0ml. The crystalline size of TiO2 immobilized on diatomite matrix by sol–gel method was around 20nm. When the experiments were carried out in the absence of diatomite, this value was increased to 33.73nm. The use of diatomite also promoted an increase of the transformation temperature of the crystalline phase anatase to rutile for the TiO2. The as-prepared TiO2/diatomite composite exhibited high photocatalytic activity (96.0% for 0.5h UV-light irradiation) for the degradation of RhB from wastewater as a result of its unique porous structure and optimum TiO2 loading. In addition, it can be easily separated from suspension and possess a good durability. This hybrid material holds great promise in the engineering field for the environmental remediation.

Abstract:In this study, we successfully synthesized a TiO2/CuO nanocomposite using the aqueous extract of Impatiens tinctoria A.rich. leaf extract as a capping, reducing, and stabilizing agent for the first time in an environmentally friendly, low-cost, straightforward, and sustainable technique. Numerous characterization techniques such as ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis-DRS), photoluminescence (PL), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and high resolution TEM (HRTEM) were used to characterize the obtained TiO2/CuO nanocomposite. XRD verified that the TiO2/CuO nanocomposite has an average crystallite size of about 21 nm. The TEM result revealed an average particle size of 29 nm for the biosynthesized TiO2/CuO NC. The HRTEM analysis showed the presence of polycrystalline structures with the predominant lattice fringes 0.352 and 0.19 which were attributed to anatase phase TiO2 in the crystal plane of (101) and (200), respectively. The lattice fringes for monoclinic CuO were observed with values of 0.213 and 0.252 for the lattice planes of (111) and (111̅), respectively. The photoluminescence spectroscopic analysis revealed that the TiO2/CuO NC showed the lowest intensity compared to the pristine TiO2 and CuO indicating the reduction of exciton recombination in the case of the TiO2/CuO NC. The BET analysis showcased the formation of mesoporous materials with a surface area of 87.5 m2/g. The photocatalytic degradation performance of the biosynthesized TiO2, CuO, and TiO2/CuO nanomaterials against the potentially harmful MB dye was tested using the light source of a 150 tungsten-halogen lamp with a wavelength range of 360-2800 nm. The factors affecting photodegradation efficiencies like catalyst dose (20 mg), dye concentration(15 ppm), pH (9), and reaction time (90 min) were optimized for the degradation of the MB dye. The TiO2/CuO catalyst showed the highest degradation efficiency of 99% under the optimized conditions. The degradation rate of the MB dye in the presence of the TiO2/CuO NC was evaluated and found to be fitted to the pseudo-first-order kinetics with a rate constant of 0.03 min-1. The reusability test of the TiO2/CuO catalyst showed its good stability.
Photocatalytic degradation of selected dyes by titania thin films with various nanostructures

Abstract:Titania thin films with various nanostructures of quasi-aligned nanorods, well-aligned nanotubes and nanoparticle aggregates were fabricated and utilized to assist photodegradation of three typical dye derivatives in water, i. e., rhodamine B (RB), methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO). The thin films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra. It is found that the bandgap of most lab-fabricated thin films can be estimated more appropriately assuming a direct transition between the valance band and the conduction band of titania. The so-called natural ageing phenomenon was evidence for all the films to assist photodegradation of RB and MB in water; but not discernible for MO, which was much reluctant to photodegradation. MB decomposed much quickly than RB when assisted by titania with predominantly anatase; on the other hand, rutile favored the photodegradation of RB than that of MB. Titania thin films with top morphologies of quasi-aligned nanorods or nanotubes were found to possess advantageous turnover frequency and photonic efficiency over commercial P25 titania and sol–gel derived titania to assist photodegradation of RB and MB in water.

Abstract:Natural mordenite, replacing the synthetic zeolites, has been employed as the support of TiO2, and its photocatalytic activity has been examined in methyl orange (MO) aqueous under UV light. AFM, TEM, XRD, FTIR and fluorescence spectra have been used to reveal the loading effects of TiO2 on mordenite. The results show that the photocatalytic degradation (PCD) reaction rates are sharply increased by natural zeolite supports. Since mordenite is photo-inert, the PCD-enhancement is mostly caused by the bonding effects of Ti–O–Si and Ti–O–Al. Moreover, another two distinct natural zeolites have been employed as the supports of TiO2, in order to check the universality of PCD-enhancement effect of natural zeolites on TiO2. And the factors of PCD reaction on TiO2–zeolite, such as pH and catalyst dose, have been investigated.
Eco-Friendly TiO2 Nanoparticles: Harnessing Aloe Vera for Superior Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue

Abstract:In recent years, the contamination of aquatic environments by organic chemicals, including dyes such as methylene blue (MB), Congo red, and crystal violet, has become an increasing concern, as has their treatment. In this work, titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) were studied for their photocatalytic performance by measuring the degradation of MB under UV light. TiO2 NPs were synthesized using two synthetic processes optimized in this study: a green method, namely leveraging the natural properties of Aloe vera leaf extract; and a conventional approach. The resulting NPs were thoroughly characterized using X-rays Diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), UV–Vis and ζ-potential analysis. The TiO2 NPs synthesized by the green method demonstrated a degradation efficiency of (50 ± 3)% after 180 minutes, which was significantly higher than the (16 ± 3)% achieved by NPs synthesized through the conventional route. Moreover, the reaction rate constant for the green-synthesized TiO2 NPs was found to be approximately five times greater than that of the conventionally synthesized NPs. These results open up a new scenario in the pollution removal strategy research, using resources accessible in nature to synthesize NPs with high photocatalytic activity, which could also be useful for other applications, such as hydrogen production.

Abstract:To solve the problem of water pollution, using environment friendly and cost effective method in short time is the need of hour. In this work, chromium (Cr) and nitrogen (N) co-doped TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized and were used for the photocatalytic degradation of dyes under visible light. The synergistic effect of metal and non-metal co-dopants added would result in appropriate reduction of band gap {from 3.2 eV of TiO2 to 2.67 eV}, decrease in recombination rate of charge carriers by trapping electrons and holes, and in better light harvesting capacity. Nanoparticles were synthesized by sol-gel method and characterized using ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) spectroscopy, fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), zeta potential, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and RAMAN spectroscopy. Eosin yellow (EY) and rose bengal (RB) were subjected to photocatalytic degradation under solar light to check the photocatalytic activity of the synthesized nanoparticles. Effects of dye concentration, the concentration of nanoparticles, time, and pH were investigated to optimize the parameters. The results obtained were remarkable for 20 ppm EY solution took 10 min using 1 gL-1 NPs at pH 3 and 10 ppm RB solution took 5 min using 0.75 gL-1 NPs at pH 5.78 (original pH) for complete degradation. Kinetics studies were also performed and both dyes followed pseudo-second-order kinetics with R2 values 0.99312 and 0.99712 for EY and RB, respectively. The study of degraded products was conducted using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) hyphenated with electron spray ionization mass spectroscopy (ESI-MS) (LC-MS) and possible degradation pathways were made for both dyes. A reusability test was also performed showing the efficiency of the particles was up to 88% after 3 cycles of use. These notable results can be attributed to the efficient removal of organic pollutants using the proposed dopants in this study.

Abstract:Herein, we reviewed the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue and methyl orange using titanium dioxide nanoparticles. The nanoparticles normally face challenges due to electron-hole recombination effects and low surface area. Doping with transition metals such as copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co) and nickel (Ni) is an alternative way of reducing the electron-hole recombination effects, improves structural and electronic properties but also reduces on the band gap energy below 3.0 eV. Photocatalyst which is an advanced oxidation process (AOP) is used as an alternative to remove both methylene blue and methyl orange dyes. This process produces highly reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as hydroxyl radical, sulphates and superoxide radical which create alternative pathways for the degradation of synthetic dyes to less toxic by-products which are water, hydrochloric acid and carbon dioxide. This review further discusses the synthesis techniques which include chemical vapor deposition, hydrothermal synthesis, sonochemical synthesis, sol-gel method, spray pyrolysis, etc that are commonly used in the preparation of pure and doped titanium dioxide nanoparticles.
Study of the optical properties of TiO2 semiconductor nanoparticles synthesized using Salvia rosmarinus and its effect on photocatalytic activity

Abstract:In recent years, the green synthesis of nanomaterials has gained interest as an efficient and environmentally friendly method for obtaining metal oxide nanoparticles. This work presents a study on the effect of Salvia rosmarinus extract in the optical properties and photocatalytic activity of titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) synthetized through a green route. Titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) was used as the Ti source, while Salvia rosmarinus extract with different amounts (1%, 2%, and 4% w/v) was used as a stabilizing agent. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) characterization shows the presence of the Ti–O–Ti band at 408 cm−1, while X-ray diffraction (XRD) results identified the crystalline structure of anatase phase TiO2 with no impurities and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images showed a spherical shape with agglomerations. The calculated band gap values decreased from 3.21 eV to 2.93 eV as the extract concentration increased. The NPs showed great photocatalytic activity under solar irradiation, achieving over 90% degradation for methylene blue (MB) in just 20 min. Additionally, the NPs showed great degradation of methyl orange (MO), and rhodamine B (RhB) under UV irradiation, with the best sample reaching over 90% degradation in under 60 min of exposure.

Abstract:Over the last decade there has been a huge increase in the green synthesis of nanoparticles. Moreover, there is a continuous increase in harnessing the potential of microorganisms for the development of efficient and biocompatible nanoparticles around the globe. In the present research work, investigators have synthesized TiO 2 NPs by harnessing the potential of Bacillus subtilis MTCC 8322 (Gram-positive) bacteria. The formation and confirmation of the TiO 2 NPs synthesized by bacteria were carried out by using UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier transforms infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX/EDS). The size of the synthesized TiO 2 NPs was 80–120 nm which was spherical to irregular in shape as revealed by SEM. FTIR showed the characteristic bands of Ti-O in the range of 400–550 cm −1 and 924 cm −1 while the band at 2930 cm −1 confirmed the association of bacterial biomolecules with the synthesized TiO 2 NPs. XRD showed two major peaks; 27.5° (rutile phase) and 45.6° (anatase phase) for the synthesized TiO 2 NPs. Finally, the potential of the synthesized TiO 2 NPs was assessed as an antibacterial agent and photocatalyst. The remediation of Methylene blue (MB) and Orange G (OG) dyes was carried out under UV- light and visible light for a contact time of 150–240 min respectively. The removal efficiency for 100 ppm MB dye was 25.75% and for OG dye was 72.24% under UV light, while in visible light, the maximum removal percentage for MB and OG dye was 98.85% and 80.43% respectively at 90 min. Moreover, a kinetic study and adsorption isotherm study were carried out for the removal of both dyes, where the pseudo-first-order for MB dye is 263.269 and 475554.176 mg/g for OG dye. The pseudo-second-order kinetics for MB and OG dye were 188.679 and 1666.667 mg/g respectively. In addition to this, the antibacterial activity of TiO 2 NPs was assessed against Bacillus subtilis MTCC 8322 (Gram-positive) and Escherichia coli MTCC 8933 (Gram-negative) where the maximum zone of inhibition in Bacillus subtilis MTCC 8322 was about 12 mm, and for E. coli 16 mm.

Abstract:Water pollution has been acknowledged as an issue of concern due to recalcitrant pollutants like textile dyes. Therefore, the eco-friendly synthesis of nano-particles (NPs) through green chemistry approach from sources and materials of organic origin has not only enhanced the properties of substance at nanoscale but has also reduced the toxicological impacts on human health and the environment. In this study a successful attempt was made to synthesize TiO2 NPs by Mangifera indica leaves extract as organic source. The structural morphology was determined by carrying out FTIR, SEM, EDX and XRD techniques. The removal of Methylene Blue (MB) dye was assessed by the application of the photocatalysis technique. The experiments were designed using the RSM (CCD) approach for selected parameters such as pH, TiO2 NPs, Dye concentration and Time. The maximal dye removal efficiency of 98% was achieved at optimum conditions of 4.7 pH, 0.04g of nano photocatalyst in 250ml of dye solution having 8ppm concentration, allowed to react for 45 min. The regression coefficient value of 79.37% was determined by ANOVA for MB dye. The results clearly indicate that the application of green nanoparticles for the removal of MB dye is a feasible option to overcome with the ever-increasing issue of water pollution and environmental degradation.

Abstract:For the first time, TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) have been created with the help of leaf extract from Orthosiphon stamineus. It was successfully possible to synthesize the precursor and extract dilution of TiO2 NPs as well as aqueous solution extracts of O. stamineus leaf extract. TiO2 NP production demonstrated promising photocatalytic and antibacterial efficacy. The fabrication of the green strategy of metallic oxide creation provides considerable profits via a minimum of effort, making it an acceptable substitute to the most laborious and challenging conventional processes. The suggested approach involved the creation of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles through Orthosiphon stamineus extracts of leaves. The synthesized nanoparticles (NPs) were then characterized using XRD, FT‐IR, FE‐SEM with EDX, and UV–visible spectroscopy. UV–visible spectroscopy validated the presence of optical imperfections in the TiO2 NPs at frequencies of 286 nm. This research specifically focused on examining the photodecomposition and germicidal traits of NPs. Initiatives aimed must be made to mitigate the hazardous effects of TiO2 NPs in an ecologically sensitive way throughout their production. Exposing the dye methylene blue (MB), a major water polluting produced by garment manufacturing, to TiO2 NPs resulted in a considerable increase in photodecomposition efficiency. The photodecomposition process exhibited a rate of breakdown of 83%. The findings indicate that the diameter inhibition zone exhibits the most potent resistance versus pathogenic microorganisms. These results have led to the identification of a long‐term, sustainable, and ecologically beneficial solution for removing pollutants from water and biological properties.

Abstract:The combustion process was employed to create TiO2 nanoparticles with the assistance of Aloe Vera. These TiO2 particles exhibit effective photocatalytic degradation of AR‐88 dye and demonstrate sensing capabilities for paracetamol as well as (d) D‐glucose detection. The use of Aloe Vera as an environmentally friendly reducing agent aligns with sustainable synthesis methods, emphasizing the versatility of TiO2 nanoparticles in a range of practical applications. Herein, a sustainable approach to combustion has been presented, utilizing Aloe Vera latex as a reducing agent in synthesizing titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles. The phase and composition of TiO2 have been confirmed using X‐ray diffraction, while the band gap has been determined as 3.17 eV using the Kubelka‐Monk plot. The photocatalytic potential of the TiO2 has been explored by assessing their effectiveness in degrading AR‐88 dye, demonstrating significant activity at 500 nm. Remarkably, in a span of 120 min of UV radiation, AR‐88 dye could reach an impressive photodegradation rate of 98.6 %, rendering the dye nearly colorless. TiO2 NPs have also been investigated as an electrode material in sensing paracetamol and D‐glucose by coating them onto a carbon paste electrode and immersing them in a 1 M KOH solution. The cyclic voltammetry experiments reveal that the TiO2 NPs possess excellent electrochemical characteristics, with a calculated proton diffusion coefficient of 5.651×10−4 cm2 s−1. These findings underscore the potential of TiO2 as a highly desirable electrode material with remarkable electrochemical properties. This research opens new avenues for utilizing TiO2 NPs in various electrochemical applications, particularly in the detection of pharmaceutically important compounds, highlighting its versatility.

Abstract:In modern times, nanoparticles have materialized as indispensable things in contemporary medicine, with a variety of uses in clinical, drug and gene conveyance. In the present study, TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) prepared from the leaf extracts of Mollugooppositifolia and Trianthema portulacastrum were compared with the chemical TiO2-NPs for antibacterial and antioxidant activities and environment-friendly nature through various tools like the UV-visible, X-ray diffraction with the aid of other analytical techniques like HR-TEM, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and photoluminescence spectroscopic techniques. The morphology of green TiO2-NPs is found to be spherical, which is supported by HR-TEM images. FT-IR analyses and X-ray diffraction data ensure that the polycrystalline characters of TiO2-NPs alike to the presence of metal oxide. TiO2-NPs showed a possible photocatalytic activity for the ruin of acid black 1 dye after disclosure to sunlight. The chemical and green methods of TiO2-NPs have acid black 1 dye decomposition rates of 86.66% and 94.33%, respectively. The synthesized TiO2-NPs are also assessed for antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. Green TiO2-NPs exhibit antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (17 + 0.56 mm) and Staphylococcus aureus (16 + 0.24 mm) at concentrations as low as 100 μL. The green TiO2-NPs showed high inhibition of DPPH I radical (50 μg/m) at 95.17 ± 21. Therefore, TiO2-NPs represent eco-friendly properties that aid in the degradation of dyes due to their antioxidant activity.

Abstract:TiO 2 photocatalyst was synthesised via a low-temperature sol-gel process using organic solvents (TO) and aqueous extract of mangrove leaves (TM) as media. The photocatalytic activities of the obtained TiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) were evaluated by degrading reactive red 195 (RR195) dye under UV irradiation. An increase in the dosage of both TO and TM photocatalysts, coupled with a decrease in the initial concentration of RR195 dye, enhanced the dye degradation rate. Reactive species scavenger analysis revealed that • O 2 − radicals and electrons were the primary species involved in the photocatalytic degradation of RR195 dye. The antibacterial properties of both TO and TM NPs were also tested against S. aureus , E. faecalis and V. damsela bacteria using the disc diffusion method. The green method utilising TM demonstrated resistance to all three bacteria types, while TO exhibited greater resistance, specifically against V. damsela . Notably, TM NPs exhibiting inhibition comparable to Ciprofloxacin when used as a positive control.

Abstract:This study is designed to highlight photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanoparticles in methyl orange (MO) dye degradation. Titanium dioxide TiO2 nanopowder was synthesized by conventional sol-gel method and calcined in air atmosphere at different temperatures 350C, 550C and 850C. The prepared TiO2 nanoparticles then were subjected to a solid state reaction with calcium hydride (CaH2) at the same temperatures but calcined in argon atmosphere. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) measurements used for phase and crystalline size identification showed that the obtained samples have the same TiO2 anatase phase, but the crystalline size decreased after reduction treatment. The electronic properties obtained via UV spectroscopy showed the decrease in calculated energy gap from 3.3 eV for prepared TiO2-550 to 2.65 eV for reduced TiO2-CaH2-550, which extend the absorption spectra toward visible light region. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) measurements revealed that the particle size decreased after reduction treatment similar to the XRD crystalline size. EDS results indicated that the deficient in oxygen content relates to formation oxygen vacancies responsible for nonstoichiometric TiO2-x oxides formation. The synthesized reduced TiO2 showed an excellent photo-catalytic activity in methyl orange dye degradation under optimum condition: pH 4.5, 40 mg catalyst loading and 10 ppm initial dye concentration.
