Abstract:This work investigates the effect of zwitterionic molecules on ionic association in ethylene oxide (EO)-based electrolytes using molecular dynamics simulations. Zwitterionic molecules can associate with cations and anions because they possess both positively and negatively charged groups. This unique feature can be leveraged to develop electrolytes with high ionic conductivity if we understand how zwitterionic molecules influence ionic associations. We investigate the ionic associations in the electrolytes composed of oligo(ethylene oxide) (EO) (EOx, x = 2, 3, 4, and 5), LiTFSI and zwitterionic molecules containing cationic imidazole group and anionic sulfonate group using molecular dynamics simulations. The analyzed properties include the radial distribution functions between Li+, [TFSI](-), EOx and zwitterionic molecules, the structures and dynamics of Li+-[TFSI](-), Li+- EOx and Li+-zwitterion associations, and the diffusion coefficients of Li+, [TFSI](-), EOx and zwitterionic molecules. The simulation results show two distinct effects of zwitterionic molecules on ionic associations in the electrolytes. First, they could release Li+ from the trapping effect of EOx chains and accelerate Li+ transport. Second, they can associate with Li+ themselves and slow down the Li+ transport. The competition between these two effects relates to the length of the EOx chains. Our simulations suggest that zwitterionic molecules could help manipulate the ionic conductivity of polyethylene oxide electrolytes. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Zwitterionic materials have moieties possessing cationic and anionic groups. This molecular structure leads to unique properties that can be the solutions of various application problems. A typical example is that zwitterionic carboxybetaine (CB) and sulfobetaine (SB) materials resist nonspecific protein adsorption in complex media. Considering the vast number of cationic and anionic groups in the current chemical inventory, there are many possible structural variations of zwitterionic materials. The diversified structures provide the possibility to achieve many desired properties and urge a better understanding of zwitterionic materials to provide design principles. Molecular simulations and modeling are a versatile tool to understand the structure–property relationships of materials at the molecular level. This progress report summarizes recent simulation and modeling studies addressing two fundamental questions regarding zwitterionic materials and their applications as biomaterials. First, what are the differences between zwitterionic and nonionic materials? Second, what are the differences among zwitterionic materials? This report also demonstrates a molecular design of new protein‐resistant zwitterionic moieties beyond conventional CB and SB based on design principles developed from these simulation studies.
Poly(olefin)-Based Anion Exchange Membranes Prepared Using Ziegler–Natta Polymerization

Abstract:Bromoalkyl-functionalized poly(olefin)s were synthesized by copolymerization of 4-(4-methylphenyl)-1-butene with 11-bromo-1-undecene using Ziegler-Natta polymerization. The resulting bromoalkyl-functionalized poly(olefin)s were converted to quaternary ammonium-containing anion-conductive copolymers by reacting the pendant bromoalkyl group with trimethylamine or a custom-synthesized tertiary amine containing pendant quaternary ammonium moieties. Poly(olefin)-based AEMs with three cations per side chain showed considerably higher hydroxide conductivities, up to 201 mS/cm at 80 degrees C in liquid water, compared to that of samples with only one cation per bromoalkyl site (68 mS/cm, 80 degrees C, liquid water), likely due to phase separation in the triple-cation structure. More importantly, triple-cation side-chain poly(olefin) AEMs exhibited higher hydroxide conductivity under relative humidity conditions (50%-100%) than typical AEMs based on benzyltrimethylammonium cations. The triple-cation the triple-cation side-chain poly(olefin)-based AEM exhibited an ionic conductivity as high as 115 mS/cm under 95% RH at 80 degrees C and 11 mS/cm under 50% RH at 80 degrees C. In addition to high ionic conductivity, the triple-cation side-chain poly(olefin) AEMs exhibited good chemical and dimensional stability. High retention of ionic conductivity (>85%) was observed for the samples in 1 M NaOH at 80 degrees C over 1000 h. Based on these high-performance poly(olefin) AEMs, a fuel cell with a peak power density of 0.94 W cm(-2) (1.28 W cm(-2) after iR correction) was achieved under H-2/O-2 at 70 degrees C. The results of this study suggest a new, low-cost, and scalable route for preparation of poly(olefin)-based AEMs for anion exchange membrane applications.

Abstract:An imidazolium cation structure was tethered with an anionic site to form so called “zwitterionic salt”. Since the zwitterionic salt dissociates into ions but did not migrate along with the potential gradient, this was used as a non-volatile polar solvent for guest salts. 1-Ethylimidazolium-3-n-propane (or butane)sulfonate was synthesized by one step reaction. This salt was mixed with an equimolar amount of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide to provide thermally stable electrolyte solution. This mixture was further mixed with copolymer of vinylidene fluoride and hexafluoropropylene to prepare polymer gel electrolyte with excellent ionic conductivity. Thermal analysis revealed that this polymer gel electrolyte showed no weight loss up to 390°C.

Abstract:A new series of green solvents that constituted with ionic liquids (ILs) and dimethyl acetamide (DMAc) were developed as good solvents for zwitterionic copolymers, and the dissolutions of amphiphilic copolymers carrying carboxylbetaine and sulfonatebetaine in these new solvents were studied. It was determined that the commonly found ILs such as 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([BMIM]BF4), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([BMIM]PF6) and many others were all effective co-solvents for zwitterionic copolymer with carboxylbetaine groups. However, the 1-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonic ([MIM]CF3SO3) instead of the [BMIM]BF4 was proved as an effective co-solvent for the copolymer carrying sulfonatebetaine units. These newly designed mix-solvents were also good solvents for poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and their influences on the crystallization as well as the formation of PVDF membranes were investigated. Our results had demonstrated that blend membranes with zwitterionic additives could be facilely prepared with many new solvent candidates.

Abstract:Zwitterions have been shown experimentally to enhance the dielectric constant of ionic media, owing to their large molecular dipole. Many studies since explored the enhancement of ionic conductivity with zwitterion additives as well as bulk behavior of zwitterions. Here, we examine the capacitance behavior of zwitterions between charged parallel plates using a mean-field theory. Employing only chain connectivity of a cation and anion with neutral monomers in between with mean-field electrostatics, we show that our model captures the high-dielectric behavior of zwitterions. We also predict an optimum in the capacitance of zwitterionic media as a function of chain length. To address the issue of zwitterion screening near charged surfaces, we demonstrate that zwitterions simultaneously partially screen charged walls and act as a pure dielectric that propagates the electric field far from the surface. Moreover, we show that salt solutions with zwitterionic additives outperform the energy density of both salt-only and zwitterion-only capacitors. We find that salt-only capacitors perform better at low applied potential, whereas salt capacitors with zwitterionic additives perform better at high applied potential.

Dielectric Enhancement from Non-Insulating Particles with Ideally Polarized Interfaces and Zero $ζ$-Potential I: Exact Solution

Abstract:We solve exactly the dielectric response of a non-insulating sphere of radius $a$ suspended in symmetric, univalent electrolyte solution, with ideally-polarizable interface but without significant $\zeta$-potential. We then use this solution to derive the dielectric response of a dilute random suspension of such spheres, with volume fraction $f\ll1$, within the Maxwell-Garnett Effective Medium Approximation. Surprisingly, we discover a huge dielectric enhancement in this bare essential model of dielectric responses of solids in electrolyte solution: at low frequency $\omega\tau_D \ll (\lambda/a) / (\sigma_w / \sigma_s+1/2)$, the real part of the effective dielectric constant of the mixture is $1-(3f/2)+(9f/4)(a/\lambda)$. Here $\sigma_{w/s}$ is the conductivity of the electrolyte solution/solids, $\lambda$ is the Debye screening length in the solution, $\tau_D=\lambda^2/D$ is the standard time scale of diffusion and $D$ is the ion diffusion coefficient. As $\lambda$ is of the order nm even for dilute electrolyte solution, even for sub-mm spheres and low volume fraction $f=0.05$ the huge geometric factor $a/\lambda$ implies an over $10^4$-fold enhancement. Furthermore, we show that this enhancement produces a significant low frequency ($\omega\tau_D\ll1$) phase shift $\tan\theta = \mathrm{Re}~ \epsilon(\omega) / \mathrm{Im} ~\epsilon(\omega)$ in a simple impedance measurement of the mixture, which is usually negligible in pure electrolyte solution. The phase shift has a scale-invariant maximum $\tan\theta_{\mathrm{max}}=(9/4)f/(2\sigma_w/\sigma_s+1)$ at $\omega_{\mathrm{max}}=(2D/\lambda a)/(2\sigma_w/\sigma_s+1)$. We provide a physical picture of the enhancement from an accumulation of charges in a thin Externally Induced Double Layer (EIDL) due to the blocking boundary conditions on interfaces.

Abstract:We investigate the modification of gas phase ion polarizabilities upon solvation in polar solvents and ionic liquids. To this aim, we develop a classical electrostatic theory of charged liquids composed of solvent molecules modeled as finite size dipoles, and embedding polarizable ions that consist of Drude oscillators. In qualitative agreement with ab initio calculations of polar solvents and ionic liquids, the hydration energy of a polarizable ion in both types of dielectric liquid is shown to favor the expansion of its electronic cloud. Namely, the ion carrying no dipole moment in the gas phase acquires a dipole moment in the liquid environment, but its electron cloud also reaches an enhanced rigidity. We find that the overall effect is an increase of the gas phase polarizability upon hydration. In the specific case of ionic liquids, it is shown that this hydration process is driven by a collective solvation mechanism where the dipole moment of a polarizable ion induced by its interaction with surrounding ions self-consistently adds to the polarization of the liquid, thereby amplifying the dielectric permittivity of the medium in a substantial way. We propose this self-consistent hydration as the underlying mechanism behind the high dielectric permittivities of ionic liquids composed of small charges with negligible gas phase dipole moment. Hydration being a correlation effect, the emerging picture indicates that electrostatic correlations cannot be neglected in polarizable liquids.

Abstract:Abstract Objective: In low income countries, deaf children are identified late due to the absence of a universal screening. Hearing impairment is a common yet neglected disability in India that leads to loss of speech and language. This qualitative study explored barriers to accessing appropriate hearing services in one city in southern India. Design: To identify the barriers in timely management of deafness, 25 semi-structured interviews were conducted. Data were examined using Applied Thematic Analysis. Study sample: Seventeen mothers of deaf children, primarily from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and eight staff members at a charitable hearing centre in Hyderabad. Results: Barriers to accessing hearing services included failure to recognise deafness, the dominant role of elders in household decisions, belief that deafness would resolve, reassurance from a child’s overall good health, lack of funds and transportation barriers to reach the centre particularly from rural areas. Parents frequently learned about services through word of mouth. Conclusions: The challenges to accessing appropriate services for deafness operate prior to presentation and include educational, cultural, navigational and financial barriers especially for those of lower socioeconomic status and residents of rural areas. The findings highlighted the need to raise awareness and implement wider screening programmes for early interventions.

Abstract:A series of novel hybrid zwitterionic membranes were prepared via a coupling reaction of trimethoxysilyl functionalized polyethylene glycol (PEG) and zwitterionic process with 1,4-butyrolactone (BL) thereafter. Both FT-IR and 13C NMR spectra confirmed the step reactions. Thermal analysis shows that the weight loss of the hybrid zwitterionic copolymer decreased slightly compared with the non-ionization hybrid precursor and the thermal stability of such zwitterionic copolymer can reach around 240 °C. Streaming potentials display that whether the membranes were coated once or thrice, they always exhibit negative values and no isoelectric point (IEP) was found in the tested pH range. Ion exchange capacities (IECs) reveal that only the cation-exchange capacities (CIECs) were detected and the CIECs of the membranes coated one to four times were in the region of (1.9–2.5) × 10−2 mequiv. cm−2. Pure water flux shows that it can be affected by the coating times and the substrate. The SEM images suggest that substrates can influence the membrane's microstructures. The increasing electrostatic repulsion between ion pairs and the pendent side structure of polymer chains might be responsible for these unusual behaviors.

Abstract:Zwitterions (ZIs), which are molecules bearing an equal number of positive and negative charges and typically possessing large dipole moments, can play an important role in improving the characteristics of a wide variety of novel battery electrolytes. Significant Coulombic interactions among ZI charged groups and any mobile ions present can lead to several beneficial phenomena within electrolytes, such as increased salt dissociation, the formation of ordered pathways for ion transport, and enhanced mechanical robustness. In some cases, ZI additives can also boost electrochemical stability at the electrolyte/electrode interface and enable longer battery cycling. Here, a brief summary of selected key historical and recent advances in the use of ZI materials to enrich the performance of three distinct classes of battery electrolytes is presented. These include: ionic liquid‐based, conventional solvent‐based, and solid matrix‐based (non‐ceramic) electrolytes. Exploring a greater chemical diversity of ZI types and electrolyte pairings will likely lead to more discoveries that can empower next‐generation battery designs in the years to come.

Abstract:Zwitterionic materials can exhibit unique characteristics and are highly tunable by variation to the covalently bound cationic and anionic moieties. Despite the breadth of properties and potential uses reported to date, for electrolyte applications they have thus far primarily been used as additives or for making polymer gels. However, zwitterions offer intriguing promise as electrolyte matrix materials that are non-volatile and charged but non-migrating. Here we report a family of zwitterions that exhibit molecular disorder and plasticity, which allows their use as a solid-state conductive matrix. We have characterized the thermal, morphological and structural properties of these materials using techniques including differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, solid-state NMR and X-ray crystallography. We report the physical and transport properties of zwitterions combined with lithium salts and a lithium-functionalized polymer to form solid or high-salt-content liquid electrolytes. We demonstrate that the zwitterion-based electrolytes can allow high target ion transport and support stable lithium metal cell cycling. The ability to use disordered zwitterionic materials as electrolyte matrices for high target ion conduction, coupled with an extensive scope for varying the chemical and physical properties, has important implications for the future design of non-volatile materials that bridge the choice between traditional molecular and ionic solvent systems.

Abstract:Recent experimental results have demonstrated that zwitterionic ionogel comprised of polyzwitterion (polyZI)-supported lithium salt-doped ionic liquid exhibits improved conductivities and lithium transference numbers than the salt-doped base ionic liquid electrolyte (ILE). However, the underlying mechanisms of such observations remain unresolved. In this work, we pursued a systematic investigation to understand the impact of the polyZI content and salt concentration on the structural and dynamic properties of the poly(MPC) ionogel of our model polyZI ionogel, poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) [poly(MPC)] supported LiTFSI/N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium TFSI base ionic liquid electrolyte. Our structural analyses show strong lithium–ZI interaction consistent with the physical network characteristic observed in the experiments. An increase in polyZI content leads to an increased fraction of Li+ ions coordinated with the polyZI. In contrast, an increase in salt concentration leads to a decreased fraction of Li+ ions coordinated with the polyZI. The diffusivities of the mobile ions in the poly(MPC) ionogel were found to be lower than the base ILE in agreement with experiments at T > 300 K. Analysis of ion transport mechanisms shows that lithium ions within the poly(MPC) ionogel travel via a combination of structural, vehicular diffusion, as well as hopping mechanism. Finally, the conductivity trend crossover between the poly(MPC) ionogel and the base ILE was rationalized via a temperature study that showed that the base ILE ions are influenced more by the variation of temperature when compared to the poly(MPC) ions.

Abstract:<p>Different from the traditional ways for enhancing the dielectric properties of polymers by compositing with rigid electronic conductors, here an alternative strategy is reported via introducing ionically conductive liquid electrolytes as functional fillers. Dielectric constant has significantly improved (up to 600%) by liquid electrolyte inclusions in an elastomer matrix. Moreover, by taking advantage of the inherent transparency of liquid electrolyte fillers, high transparency, good stretchability, and high dielectric constant are achieved simultaneously. Using the composite elastomer, the fabrication of highly sensitive strain sensor is demonstrated with 5–6 times higher sensitivity than the pristine elastomer, and flexible electroluminescent device with greatly lowed driving voltage. The strategy provides new opportunities for novel electroactive polymers, including flexible touchscreen panels and displays, biomimetic soft machines, and smart optics.</p>

Abstract:It is found that ester introduction into imidazolium or pyridinium cations can significantly improve the biodegradability property of ionic liquids and also influence the viscosity and the toxicity of ionic liquids. Ionic liquids based on dicyanamide anion reveal good electrochemical properties. Four chloride and dicyanamide ionic liquids with ester groups were prepared, and the effect of anion and cation structure of ionic liquids on electrical conductivity/electrochemical stability window was discussed from experimental studies and density functional theory (DFT) simulations. The introduction of the ester group in imidazolium cation decreased the refractive index and electrical conductivity, while increasing the electrochemical stability window of ionic liquids. The refractive index, electrical conductivity, and electrochemical stability window values decreased with the increase of the alkyl chain length of the ester group from ethyl to butyl. The refractive index values of chloride imidazolium ionic liquids were higher than those of dicyanamide ionic liquids, while the electrical conductivity and electrochemical stability window values of dicyanamide ionic liquids were much higher than those of chloride ionic liquids. DFT simulations revealed that ester introduction in imidazolium cation decreased the average hydrogen bond length and increased the cation–anion interaction. The average hydrogen bond length of chloride and dicyanamide ionic liquids increased with the increase of the alkyl chain length of the ester group from ethyl to butyl, while the absolute interaction energy (Δ E ) of chlorine and dicyanamide ionic liquids decreased with the increase of the alkyl chain length of the ester group from ethyl to butyl. DFT simulations demonstrated that ionic liquid structure (ester chain length and anion) was closely related to the electrical conductivity and electrochemical stability window properties of ionic liquids. These results will shed light on the design and optimization of functional ionic liquids as electrolytes for renewable energy and energy storage applications.

Herein, we examined a synergetic impact of amino isophthalic acid (AIPA) and the fixed quaternized groups to produce stable, cost-effective, and efficient zwitterion membranes (ZIMs) via a sol-gel process. We developed different membranes such as QAIPA-10, QAIPA-15, and QAIPA-20 by varying the amount of AIPA from 10 to 20 wt% in the base membrane. It was found that when the amount of AIPA increases, the Li+ flux also improved from 1.66 x 10(-10) mol cm(-2) s(-1) to 33.46 x 10(-10) mol cm(-2) s(-1), respectively. By comparing the membranes based on the various amounts of AIPA, the membrane with 20 wt% (QAIPA-20) had a higher Li+ flux and reasonable permselectivity due to the high WU, CEC as compared with the QAIPA-10, QAIPA-15 and base membranes. To further explore the performance of the QAIPA-20, we also studied various cation systems such as Na+/Mg2+, K+/Mg2+, and H+/Fe2+, respectively. The obtained results proved that AIPA strongly dictates the cation transport channels, hydrophilicity, and repulsive centers of the ZIMs. We may conclude that QAIPA-20 is effective for lithium extraction, water desalination, and acid recovery.
Anion–cation and ion–solvent interaction of some typical ionic liquids in solvents with different dielectric constant

Abstract:To evaluate the anion–cation and ion–solvent interactions of ionic liquids (ILs) in solvents, a series of theoretical calculations were performed in different mediums (water, dimethyl sulfoxide, acetonitrile, methanol, ethanol, acetone, dichloroethane, and chloroform). The obtained results suggest that the solvent has remarkable influence. The corresponding interaction energies decrease with the increase of the solvent dielectric constant. There exists obvious difference between the solvation energy of ionic pairs and separated ions, which is the reason for the influence of solvents on the binding energy. The geometric structure, charge, and dipole moment of the ILs were also influenced regularly by solvents.
Enhanced flexoelectricity of liquid with hydrated ions

Abstract:Flexoelectricity, denoted as an electromechanical coupling effect from strain gradient introduced polarization, is prevalent in dielectric materials. However, its application in low-viscosity liquids has been limited by the scale of the flexoelectric coefficient. This study explores the flexoelectric coefficient of various hydrated ion solutions through a series of experiments. Additionally, the interplay between ion adsorption and the flexoelectric effect is investigated by using interfacial voltage detection. By introducing hydrated structures into liquids, a significant enlargement of the flexoelectric coefficient up to 2.3×10-9 C/m is obtained in Fe2(SO4)3 solution by 4 times than DI water. These findings highlight the remarkable electromechanical properties of liquid materials with hydrated ions and suggest promising avenues for the application of liquid dielectrics in hydrovoltaic technology, ionotronic devices, and energy harvesters.

Abstract:The leakage and volatilization of liquid electrolytes raise potential safety risks in the development of electrochemical energy storage devices with high energy density. Herein, novel solid-state zwitterionic materials containing sulfonyl imide as a highly delocalized anionic structure were synthesized for highly targeted lithium ion conducting matrices. The influences of the molecular structure characteristics on thermal behavior and electrochemical property were investigated comprehensively. Due to the weak Coulomb interaction between the sulfonyl imide moiety and cationic species, the rationally designed zwitterionic electrolytes showed a high conductivity of 0.44 mS cm(-1). And the obtained high lithium ion transference number of 0.43 is four times higher than that of the widely employed sulfonate analogues. Additionally, excellent cycling stability of the lithium plating/stripping process and super resistance to electrochemical oxidation (up to 5.5 V) were observed. This molecular engineering strategy for lithium ion conductor advances new possibilities for developing solvent-free and non-migrating electrolyte matrix materials for lithium metal batteries.
