Abstract:Background: Medical students rarely receive dedicated education in plastic surgery, exposing them to influence from the internet or television programming that is frequently skewed toward cosmetic procedures. Additionally, social media posts from board-certified plastic surgeons make up a small portion of available content. These biased representations may impact students' perceptions, narrowing the scope of referrals and limiting career exploration. Methods: Medical students at two academic medical centers were surveyed. Blinded data were collected on exposure to plastic surgery, social media usage, observed content, and perceptions of the specialty. Students' understanding of plastic surgery was evaluated using clinical scenarios. Results: The response rate was 24.3%. Social media and television were the primary contributors to understanding of plastic surgery in 51.6% of students, especially for those who had not completed a surgical clerkship (P < 0.026). Students most frequently viewed plastic surgery content posted by influencers (28.1%), followed by board-certified plastic surgeons (24.1%), patients (21.2%), and nonplastic surgeon physicians (19.7%). Posts relating to cosmetic procedures (44.3%) were viewed most frequently. Students who followed board-certified plastic surgeons performed better when answering clinical vignettes (64.8% versus 50.9%). Conclusions: Social media and television play a significant role in medical students' perceptions of plastic surgery. Students are also more likely to see posts from influencers than board-certified plastic surgeons, furthering potential bias. Quality content from board-certified surgeons and professional societies may improve scope of practice creep and student interest.

Abstract:Background: Unlike most health care sectors, patients can select an aesthetic surgery provider without considering insurance coverage. Patients therefore must be able to make informed choices regarding provider selection. Surgeon qualifications are part of the data patients evaluate in their decision making. To characterize the provider landscape that patients face, this study compares the certification requirements of various boards within the aesthetic marketplace. Methods: Four boards were identified for analysis based on a Google search of "board of plastic surgery": the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS), the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS), and the American Board of Facial Cosmetic Surgery (ABFCS). Information on certification requirements was obtained from each board's official website. Results: ABPS requires that diplomates complete an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited plastic surgery residency, pass a written and oral examination that includes a case collection, and meet continual standards to maintain certification. ABCS and ABFCS both require an American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS) cosmetic surgery fellowship and passage of a written and oral examination. Neither board has case collection or continuing certification requirements. ABFPRS requires completion of either an ACGME-accredited otolaryngology or plastic surgery residency. Its examination process includes written and oral components as well as a case log. ABFPRS has enacted continuing certification requirements for diplomates credentialed in 2001 and later. ABPS is the only board that is a member of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). Conclusions: ABPS stands apart as the only board within the aesthetic marketplace with rigorous standards for precertification training, demonstrating competency through examinations and case logs, and maintaining certification. Being an ABMS member board also contributes to ABPS being the preeminent organization for identifying physicians who practice safe, effective aesthetic surgery.
Capitalizing on social media: An evaluation of the public's preferences for plastic surgery social media content

Abstract:Background: The effectiveness of utilizing social media platforms to promote clinical practices and attract patients has been well established. This study aimed to assess what plastic surgery social media content and educational material the public is most responsive to. Methods: An anonymous 25-question survey was distributed using REDCap and Amazon's Mechanical Turk to ascertain demographic information, patterns of social media use, levels of interest in plastic surgery, and preferences for plastic surgery content. Results: Of 401 participants, the typical respondent was between 25 and 34 years old and on social media daily. Almost half of the respondents (46.1%) have intentionally viewed plastic surgery content on social media, of which most used Instagram (71.1%) and Facebook (55.4%). Participants grouped as either younger or older than 35 years old were equally likely to have viewed plastic surgery content (p = 0.33). Content categories with the highest interest were before and after results (mean Likert weight 4.00 ± 1.10), patient testimonials (3.73 ± 1.15), and recovery process (3.67 ± 1.14). Content on celebrities (2.89 ± 1.17), comedic videos (2.79 ± 1.19), and surgeons' private lives (2.51 ± 1.08) received negative interest. Photo posts (51.4%) were preferred more than video posts (27.2%). Before and after results on social media were the most influential factor in the selection of a plastic surgeon (45.9%). Conclusions: The importance of social media for plastic surgeons to be able to interact with patients is at unprecedented heights. Understanding patterns of the public's social media content preferences will help plastic surgeons optimize their social media reach and influence their target audience.

Abstract:Objective: Facial asymmetries can significantly affect patient satisfaction post-surgery. Social media can impact a patient's perception of their asymmetries. To gather insights into the practices, perceptions, and approaches concerning facial asymmetry among facial plastic surgeons. To understand the impact of social media on perceptions of facial asymmetry. Design and participants: An AAFPRS survey consisting of 46 questions that sought to understand facial plastic surgeons' perceptions of facial asymmetry, their consultation process, their patients' perspectives on their own facial asymmetries, and patient satisfaction. The survey was distributed to 1,269 members of AAFPRS across community hospitals, private practices, and academic hospitals. Sixty-seven members completed the survey. Findings: The survey revealed that 31% (21) of surgeons face challenges in managing patient expectations regarding facial asymmetry. 12% (8) of surgeons felt that patients did not initially recognize their own asymmetries. Eighty-seven percent (58) of surgeons emphasize the natural occurrence of asymmetry during consultations to set realistic expectations. Conclusion: This study emphasizes the need for thorough patient education during initial consultations to align expectations with achievable outcomes. Surgeons should explain the natural occurrence of asymmetry clearly and use digital imaging to show patients realistic previews of surgical results.

Abstract:Background Contemporary medical education devotes little time to plastic surgery topics. This deficiency is potentially greater at institutions without a dedicated plastic surgery training program. Lack of exposure to plastic surgery results in many medical students developing limited awareness to the full scope of the field. As a result, these future physicians may be unaware of many conditions treated by the plastic surgeon, resulting in referrals being diverted to alternative specialist and furthering scope of practice creep. This study aims to assess medical students' exposure to plastic surgery and evaluate institutional-based differences in plastic surgery education by comparing medical schools with and without a plastic surgery training program. Methods Surveys were distributed to medical students at 2 institutions in the same United States city: 1 with a plastic surgery training program (TP) and 1 with no training program (NTP). Surveys assessed students' clinical experiences, exposure to plastic surgery, and understanding of the scope of plastic surgery. Results The response rate was 24.3% (306 of 1261). Many students reported having “little” or “no” exposure to plastic surgery during preclinical (93.5%) and clinical (77.7%) phases. NTP students were more likely to report “no” exposure to plastic surgery during both the preclinical ( P = 0.0145) and clinical ( P = 0.045) years. Consequently, approximately half of all students felt uncomfortable knowing when to refer a patient (46.1%) or place an inpatient consult (51.1%) to a plastic surgeon. When presented with clinical scenarios, plastic surgery was selected by only 53.4% of students. Performance between institutions was similar (53.0% TP vs 53.5% NTP, P = 0.936), with greater accuracy on cosmetic vignettes compared with hand and peripheral nerve vignettes. There was a statistically significant difference in 4 subspecialty domains between students who had prior exposure to plastic surgery and those who did not (hand/peripheral nerve, P < 0.0001; craniofacial, P = 0.007; breast/cosmetic, P = 0.001; and reconstruction/burn, P < 0.0001). Conclusions These findings add to the growing body of literature demonstrating that medical students have limited exposure to plastic surgery. Although limited in its scope, this study suggests that home TP status does not appear to overtly impact students' understanding. Increased exposure and overall surgical experience correlated with an increased understanding of the scope of plastic surgery.

Abstract:Abstract Background While extensive research has explored why women undergo labiaplasty, little attention has been paid to societal and professional abilities to distinguish between altered and unaltered labia, impacting both patient concerns and broader societal perceptions. Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of the general public and healthcare professionals in identifying labiaplasty and to pinpoint the misconceptions driving their perceptions. The goal was to inform more effective patient counseling strategies and challenge existing stigmas around cosmetic genital surgery. Methods We conducted an online survey with 511 lay adults and a group of 21 gynecologists and aesthetic vulvar surgeons, assessing their ability to detect labiaplasty from images, focusing on aesthetic appearance, hair patterns, and size. The analysis involved Pearson correlation and Z-tests to compare perceptions against actual operative status. Results Our analysis revealed a pronounced difficulty among participants in accurately discerning labiaplasty, with neither group showing a significant ability to identify surgical alterations. Misinterpretations were notably influenced by expectations of aesthetic appearance, with 49% associating an “odd” or “fake” look with surgery, and hair and size misconceptions also misleading respondents. Additionally, 20% of participants mistakenly related surgical changes to gender affirming surgery or female genital mutilation. Conclusions The study highlights a gap in the ability of both the general public and medical professionals to accurately identify labiaplasty, pointing to a broad misunderstanding of cosmetic genital surgery's visual outcomes. Addressing these misconceptions through targeted education could substantially improve patient counseling and help dismantle the stigmas associated with labiaplasty.

Abstract:Abstract Current literature demonstrates a lack of racial diversity in plastic surgery media. However, to our knowledge, no study has yet examined the racial diversity of Webpage content as if from a patient-search perspective. The objective of this study is to determine if there is a racial discrepancy between the US Census, American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) statistics, and the media featuring implied patients on US plastic surgeons' Webpages from a patient-focused approach. A Google search was completed using the term “(state) plastic surgeon.” The first 10 relevant Web sites were collected for each state, and homepages were analyzed. In line with previous studies, the implied patients in media were classified into 1 of 6 skin tone categories: I, ivory; II, beige; III, light brown; IV, olive; V, brown; and VI, dark brown. These correlate to Fitzpatrick phototypes; however, the Fitzpatrick scale measures skin's response to UV exposure. Skin tone was used as a guide to measure racial representation in the media, with the caveat that skin tone does not absolutely correlate to racial identity. Categories I–III were further classified as “white” and IV–VI as “nonwhite.” These data were compared with the 2020 ASPS demographics report and US Census. Four thousand eighty individuals were analyzed from 504 Webpages, the majority of which were those of private practice physicians. A total of 91.62% of individuals were classified as “white” and 8.38% “nonwhite.” The distribution by category was as follows: I = 265, II = 847, III = 2626, IV = 266, V = 71, and VI = 5. Using χ 2 analyses, a statistically significant difference was found between the racial representation within this sample and that of the 2020 US Census nationally ( P < 0.001), regionally ( P < 0.001), and subregionally ( P < 0.001); the 2020 ASPS Cosmetic Summary Data ( P < 0.001); and the 2020 ASPS Reconstructive Summary Data ( P < 0.001). This study highlights the significant difference between racial representation on plastic surgeons' Webpages and the demographics of patients they serve. Further analyses should identify the impact of these representational disparities on patient care and clinical outcomes, as well as examine how best to measure racial diversity and disparities in patient-oriented media.

Abstract:IntroductionPatients interested in aesthetic plastic surgery procedures increasingly seek advice on social media and rely on easily accessible online information. The investigatory goal was to determine the impact of this phenomenon on the everyday aesthetic plastic surgery practice.Methods and PatientsFive hundred consecutive patients completed a questionnaire prior to their consultation with a plastic surgeon at our clinic. A questionnaire was also completed by 128 plastic surgeons practising in 19 different countries. A literature review was performed.ResultsAlmost all patients (95 %) used the internet to collect information prior to consultation, for 68 % of them it being their first search method. Social media were used by 46 % of patients and 40 % of these were strongly influenced when choosing a specific doctor. The majority of plastic surgeons (85 %) thought the information found on social media could lead to unrealistic expectations. However, 45 % of plastic surgeons believed that their consultations became easier after the advent of social media, 29 % found them more difficult. A literature review showed a high percentage of poor quality internet websites regarding plastic surgery and an increase in use of social media among plastic surgeons.ConclusionThe internet and social media play an important and growing role in plastic surgery. This results in more informed patients but may create unrealistic expectations. Even if the internet provides ample information, it cannot replace the face-to-face consultation, which always should remain a detailed process, covering both risks and limitations of alternative procedures. Abstract:Background: The purpose of this study is to assess the awareness levels about plastic surgery among medical students and to formulate appropriate teaching modules for undergraduate students to introduce and educate them about various plastic surgical procedures.Methods: A questionnaire-based study was done to assess awareness about procedures done under plastic surgery among medical students from second through final year. Collected data were statistically analyzed. The results were used to propose changes in teaching modules to medical students.Results: There is not much awareness about plastic surgery as a specialty amongst medical students. Plastic surgery is mostly perceived as cosmetic surgery, and the other procedures done under plastic surgery is not associated with the speciality by the medical students. Of all the clinical conditions given to the participants, there was not a single clinical condition where the respondents favoured undisputedly for plastic surgeons.Conclusions: Plastic surgery as a specialty is poorly understood by our undergraduate medical students so authors conclude there is lack of awareness, knowledge and disposition about plastic surgical procedures among them. Based on the report’s authors have formulated teaching and practical modules like enrichment courses, value added education, co-curricular activities and introduction to social media platforms related to plastic surgery for creating better awareness and knowledge among undergraduate medical students about plastic surgery.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in September 2023. The 10 most visited websites in each state were identified. Sociodemographic characteristics including race and sex of patients and plastic surgeons, as well as the type of practice, were collected. Race was classified according to individuals' Fitzpatrick Phototypes into White and non-White. Differences in patient and surgeon representation were compared to the 2020 US Census and the 2020 ASPS demographics using χ 2 tests. Subgroup analyses were conducted to identify differences by type of practice and region. Results: We analyzed a total of 2,752 patients from 462 websites belonging to 930 plastic surgeons. PRS websites were predominantly from private practices (93%). Regarding patient representation, 92.6% were female, 7.4% were male, 87.6% were White, and 12.4% were non-White. The surgeon population on the studied webpages was 75.1% male, 92.1% White, and 7.8% non-White. Statistically significant differences were found in the patient population when compared to the 2020 national ( P < 0.001) and regional ( P < 0.001) US Census demographics and the 2020 ASPS Statistics Report ( P < 0.001). Although minority representation was significantly higher on academic websites compared to private practice (22.9% vs. 12.1%; P = 0.007), both were significantly lower than the percentage of minority patients undergoing PRS. Conclusions: This study illuminates racial disparities in the representation of racial groups among patients and plastic surgeons in the most frequented plastic surgery websites. Moreover, it underscores the imperative to bolster racial diversity within the digital content of both private and academic PRS websites. Greater racial representation can foster a more inclusive perception of the plastic surgery field, which may potentially broaden access to care and enrich the professional landscape.
Perceptions and Understanding of Transgender Patient Care: A Survey of Practicing Facial Plastic Surgeons

Abstract:Transgender individuals face significant health disparities including deficiencies in physician education, knowledge, and comfort with care. The objective of this study was to determine the perceptions, practice patterns, and familiarity of facial plastic surgeons with transgender health care. An anonymous questionnaire was sent to facial plastic surgeons within the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery list-serve. Primary datapoints included participant characteristics, transgender-related experience, and educational goals. Of the 66 facial plastic surgeons surveyed, 49% had treated 1 to 10 transgender patients during their career, and 70% were actively treating at least 1 transgender patient. The number of patients treated and surgeries performed was significantly associated with self-perceived competence, comfort counseling on gender-affirming surgeries, discussing gender identity, asking preferred pronouns, and a desire to learn more about transgender care. Most participants (61%) obtained transgender care training through real-world experience, with only 18% receiving formal training in residency or fellowship. In total, 50% of respondents believe transgender care training among facial plastic surgeons is inadequate and 60% support its incorporation into residency/fellowship curricula. Increased awareness is needed to address the disparities experienced by transgender patients. Many facial plastic surgeons desire to learn more and support incorporating transgender care into training. Understanding the current state of transgender care can assist the facial plastic community in promoting education that strengthens physicians' ability to deliver competent care that addresses the inequities faced by this diverse group. Abstract:Background The surge in social media usage has transformed the dissemination and consumption of healthcare information, notably impacting plastic surgery and cosmetic specialties. This study focuses on the influence of social media, particularly Instagram and TikTok, in shaping perceptions of individuals seeking facial feminization (FF) procedures. Methods Using the validated DISCERN scale, we assessed the reliability and accuracy of FF content on TikTok and Instagram. The study also analyzed the relationship between content reliability on engagement metrics (likes, comments, views) and the type of content shared (educational, testimonial, promotional). Results The analysis encompassed 225 TikTok videos and 75 Instagram posts. TikTok content showed 9.33% as “very poor,” 66.2% as “poor,” 22.6% as “fair,” and only 1.33% as “excellent.” Similarly, Instagram content demonstrated 14.67% as “very poor” and 69.33% as “poor,” with no content rated as “good” or “excellent.” Educational content received higher reliability scores on both platforms. TikTok engagement metrics showed lower reliability ratings correlating with more views, comments, and likes. Conclusion The study underscores the critical role of social media in shaping patient perspectives on FF procedures. The prevalence of inaccurate information necessitates a focus on responsible engagement by healthcare professionals, aiming to provide accurate, educational content that aligns with patients' informational needs and ultimately enhances surgical outcomes.

Moreover, it underscores the imperative to bolster racial diversity within the digital content of both private and academic PRS websites. Greater racial representation can foster a more inclusive perception of the plastic surgery field, which may potentially broaden access to care and enrich the professional landscape.

Abstract:Abstract Aim Medical school training must be broad enough to assess patients yet focused enough to appropriately refer to plastic surgery. Plastic and reconstructive surgery encompasses deformity and disability which comprises a significant proportion of surgical disease burden. Referral delays and inappropriate interventions exacerbate this: effective training is paramount. The Royal College of Surgeons’ National Undergraduate Curriculum in Surgery offers guidance on essential knowledge, but overcrowded undergraduate curricula hinder this. This review synthesised the literature on global student plastic surgery perceptions and pedagogical methods employed, with a UK focus. Method A PubMed search on 28/10/2022 returned 1224 articles. After screening for temporality and title and relevancy, 164 articles remained. Following full-text screening and de-duplication, 20 articles remained. Results A paucity of undergraduate plastic surgery teaching exists, with associated reduced training applications. Merely 10% of 16 US medical schools and a 51% reduction in UK schools contain compulsory plastic surgery teaching. 90% of 348 final year students at 15 UK medical schools were not confident in burns management. Student perceptions of plastic surgery’s scope are notably skewed. Students overemphasise its aesthetic component and underestimate peripheral neuropathies, limb surgery and trauma. Media and social media significantly drive this. Conclusions Plastic surgery is misperceived by medical students, due to limited exposure and (social)media-perpetuated stereotypes. Due to the critical role of plastic surgery in managing trauma, burns and cancer, it is vital that students are aware of its scope. The full scale of UK student perceptions on plastic surgery are yet to be elucidated.

Abstract:Social media can be a powerful tool for plastic surgery training programs. Previous studies have shown the value social media may have in integrated residency program recruitment and program reputation. These findings may generalize to fellowship programs, but this space has not been comprehensively studied to date. Therefore, this study aims to characterize plastic surgery fellowship programs' social media usage and identify subsequent opportunities for program leadership to generate engagement. Methods: United States plastic surgery fellowship programs in four major subspecialties (hand, microsurgery, craniomaxillofacial, and aesthetic) were identified and evaluated for social media presence on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Platform-specific parameters were collected and statistically analyzed in aggregate. Results: There were a total of 25 Instagram accounts, four Facebook accounts, and three Twitter accounts across all investigated subspecialties. Hand surgery had the greatest social media presence on Instagram (19.5%) and Twitter (3.4%). Microsurgery had the greatest presence on Facebook (4.7%). Between 2015 and 2022, Instagram was the platform with the greatest increase in adoption by fellowship programs. Geographically, microsurgery and craniomaxillofacial accounts were primarily owned by Midwest programs (66.7%, 100%), and aesthetic primarily by programs in the South (83.3%). Number of Instagram posts and followers were not significantly correlated with hospital reputation (P = 0.12, P = 0.63). Conclusions: Social media is underutilized by plastic surgery fellowship programs. While Instagram metrics such as posts and followers are not correlated with hospital reputation, the skewed distributions of fellowship accounts, both geographically and across platforms, represent areas of potential growth.

Abstract:Background: The growth of social media has transformed advertising within plastic surgery. Recent studies have characterized these developments, but objective analysis is needed. Methods: This is a cross-sectional analysis of online media use by American Society of Plastic Surgeons members who received board certification in 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, or 2019. Online searches and StatShow revealed social media and website metrics. Metropolitan-based practices were determined using Department of Agriculture continuum codes. Descriptive and quantitative analyses were used to make inferences regarding study aims. Results: This study included 811 surgeons. A total of 58.6 percent had practice websites and 43.9 percent had professional Instagram accounts. Instagram use was widespread across subspecialties and there was no significant difference in the number of followers by subspecialty ( p = 0.34). Year of certification had no significant effect on the number of followers ( p = 0.12); however, recently certified and seasoned members had the fewest. The top 1 percent of surgeons had more followers than the remaining 99 percent combined. Those with metropolitan-based practices had significantly higher website traffic ( p = 0.01) but no difference in the number of followers ( p = 0.88). There was no evidence that the number of followers or posts per month correlated with website traffic ( R 2 = 0.004 and 0.036, respectively). Conclusions: The study demonstrates findings from a cross-sectional analysis of plastic surgeons from different training backgrounds, regions, and tenure. The use of Instagram in professional practice is widespread but there is no correlation between its use and increased website traffic.

Abstract:Abstract Aim Social media exerts substantial influence on contemporary life, shaping the collective narrative. A current rising trend known as “academic social media” involves healthcare professionals leveraging social platforms for networking, patient education and recruitment. This cross-sectional analysis of Instagram and TikTok short video content aims to identify the perceptions of plastic surgery on social media. Method A search of the term “plastic surgery” was performed on Instagram and TikTok, and the first 100 short videos on each platform (TikTok’s and Reels) were reviewed. Posts were categorised based on their country of origin, the poster’s profession, content’s nature, sub-specialty, the accuracy of information and impact. Results The assessed videos garnered 355,909,365 views (302,881,140 on TikTok). Predominantly, the content was informative (66 posts), closely followed by advertisements and before-and-after visuals (59 each). Only 13 videos featured educational material. Aesthetic surgery overwhelmingly dominated, with only 5 videos addressing a different subspecialty. Plastic surgeons generated most content (42% on TikTok and 75% on Instagram), followed by patient-documented material. Cross-platform overlap was minimal. Approximately 27% of TikTok and 12.5% of Instagram videos contained inaccuracies with documented unsafe practices, such as a patient recounting an additional cosmetic procedure performed without consent. Conclusions The widespread popularity of short-form plastic surgery videos is evident. While many come from reliable sources, there is a notable emphasis on cosmetic procedures, presenting a skewed view of the diverse practices within plastic surgery. The significant prevalence of inaccuracies on TikTok, especially given its growing popularity compared to Instagram, raises concerns about the public dissemination of misinformation.

Abstract:Background: Plastic surgeons are competing for their share of a growing but still limited market, thus making advertising an important component in a successful plastic surgery practice. Objective: The authors evaluate the variables, characteristics, and presentation features that make print advertisements most effectively pique the interest of individuals selecting a plastic surgeon. Methods: An online survey was administered to 404 individuals with active interest in plastic surgery from 10 major metropolitan areas. Participants were presented with 5 different advertisements from plastic surgeons throughout the country and were asked a series of both closed- and open-ended questions to assess verity, quality, and marketability of each advertisement. Reponses to open-ended questions were analyzed using the Wordle program (www.wordle.net). Results: The most frequent themes identified for all 5 ads were "Being beautiful is possible" (41%), "I could be beautiful" (24%), "Some people need surgery to be beautiful" (16%), and "Being beautiful is important" (14%). Advertisement 1-featuring 3 women and no pre- or posttreatment photography, no physician photography, and a listing of the 3 physicians' credentials but not a list of the services provided-received the highest overall preference rating. Conclusions: Factors including emotions felt while reading, unique qualities of the advertisement, list of procedures performed, use of models versus actual patients, and pictures of the plastic surgeons were found to contribute to the respondents' overall perception of advertisements used to market a plastic surgery practice.

Abstract:Purpose To analyze the factors that patients consider when choosing plastic surgeons and investigate patients' attitudes toward physicians' aesthetic ability and their adherence toward same-gender physicians. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted. All patients who presented for evaluation and management between January and April 2022 were eligible for study enrolment. Data collected include demographical information and specific questions related to choosing plastic surgeons, including physician's education, surgical ability, research, title, appearance, dress, age, aesthetics, the patient's preference of physicians' gender and the way of learning about physicians. Results 1,006 valid respondents participated, and the average age was 46.44±15.51 years old (participation rate 99.60%). 72.5% were female. Plastic surgery history (OR 3.242, 95%CI: 1.664~6.317, p=0.001), education (OR 1.895, 95%CI: 1.064~3.375, p=0.030), income (OR 1.340, 95%CI: 1.026~1.750, p= 0.032), sexual orientation (OR 1.662, 95%CI: 1.066~2.589, p=0.025), and concern for the physicians' appearance (OR 1.564, 95%CI: 1.160~2.107, p=0.003) were significantly associated with patients' tendency to value physicians' aesthetic ability. Marital status (OR 0.766, 95% CI: 0.616~0.951, p=0.016), income (OR 0.896,95% CI: 0.811~0.990, p=0.031), the attention to physicians' age (OR 1.191,95% CI: 1.031~1.375, p=0.017), and the attention to physicians' aesthetic ability (OR 0.775,95% CI: 0.666~0.901, p=0.001) were significantly associated with the respondents' same-gender adherence degree. Conclusion These findings suggest that patients with plastic surgery history, higher income, higher education background, and more diverse sexual orientation paid more attention to physicians' aesthetic ability. Marriage and income would affect the same-gender adherence degree, which would further influence patients' attention to the doctor's age and aesthetic ability.
