Abstract:The construction of large-scale water reservoir facilities in transboundary river basins always arouses intense concern and controversy. The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) under construction in Ethiopia is perceived to affect water security in Egypt and Sudan. Therefore, this study investigated the water and sediment balance of the Blue Nile River (BNR) basin and identified the spatio-temporal variation in sediment and water yields along with the construction of GERD using Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) sediment and water yield models. The BNR basin experienced increasing water and sediment yields between 1992 and 2020 and has shown a growth trend since 2020. The lion’s share of water and sediment yields come from upstream of the GERD. Taken together, these results imply that the construction of the GERD will serve as a water storage and silt trap for Sudan and Egypt.

Abstract:The Nile River Basin's (NRB's) water resources are vulnerable to hydrologic alteration projects. Construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), a hydroelectric power project on the Blue Nile, is expected to improve living standards in Ethiopia and contribute to the country's sustainable development. However, the effects of the GERD on water resources of downstream countries (Sudan and Egypt) have been a source of concern. In this study, eight types of remote sensing data and products were used to assess the impacts of the GERD reservoir's filling process on Ethiopia's, Sudan's, and Egypt's surface water resources. Specifically, spatiotemporal variability in surface area, volume, rainfall, and water storage for five reservoirs located in Ethiopia (GERD), Sudan (Roseires and Merowe), and Egypt (Lake Nasser and Toshka) for the period 2013–2022 were examined. Results indicate that (1) the GERD reservoir's three filling phases started in July 2020, July 2021, and August 2022, respectively, (2) at the onset of these three phases, the GERD reservoir covered an area (volume) of 110 ± 7 km 2 (1.87 ± 0.07 km 3 ), 233 ± 31 km 2 (4.30 ± 0.48 km 3 ), and 544 ± 126 km 2 (11.79 ± 2.18 km 3 ), respectively, (3) a reduction in the GERD reservoir's area (24–49 %) observed at the end of the first two fillings is attributed to enhanced infiltration and evaporation rates at the GERD site, (4) no significant changes were observed in the Roseires and Merowe reservoir's surface areas, although both Nasser and Toshka reservoirs saw a slight increase in surface area during the investigated period, (5) the observed increase in water storage over the five reservoirs is attributed mainly to increased rainfall rates (6–10 %) and heavy flooding during the GERD filling period, and (6) if the GERD filling continues at the similar rates for an additional four years during drought periods, Egypt's Nile water allocation might be reduced by 35.47 ± 2.29 % (16.57 ± 1.07 km 3 ), which could translate into an agricultural land loss of 33.14 ± 1.81 % each year. This study emphasizes the critical need for Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt to work together to effectively and equitably manage the water resources of the NRB.

Abstract:Abstract When construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is completed, the Nile will have two of the world’s largest dams—the High Aswan Dam (HAD) and the GERD—in two different countries (Egypt and Ethiopia). There is not yet agreement on how these dams will operate to manage scarce water resources. We elucidate the potential risks and opportunities to Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia by simulating the filling period of the reservoir; a new normal period after the reservoir fills; and a severe multi-year drought after the filling. Our analysis illustrates how during filling the HAD reservoir could fall to levels not seen in recent decades, although the risk of water shortage in Egypt is relatively low. The new normal will benefit Ethiopia and Sudan without significantly affecting water users in Egypt. Management of multi-year droughts will require careful coordination if risks of harmful impacts are to be minimized.

Abstract:The Blue Nile River is an indispensable source of livelihood for over 90 million people in Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt. Recently, Ethiopia has constructed the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), the largest in Africa, which could potentially alter the geomorphology of the river regime, and impact downstream countries. This study offers the first comprehensive analysis of the geomorphological alterations and water surface coverage changes of the Blue Nile River due to the construction and operation of the GERD. For this, we use multi-temporal Landsat 5 and Sentinel-2 satellite imagery spanning the period from 2009 to 2022, supplemented with Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation with Station data (CHIRPS) precipitation products to discern the potential influence of climate variability on the observed changes. The findings are examined using the Before-After-Control-Impact (BACI) model, revealing significant fluctuations in the water surface coverage area across different sections of the river, particularly following the filling stages of the GERD. An analysis at every 10 km is performed to assess the extent of GERD's influence on the Blue Nile, which indicates no notable alterations in surface area or geomorphology within the first 30 km of downstream river flow. The study also determines that changes from 2011 to 2018 are primarily associated with the upgrade activities of the Roseires Dam, while alterations along the Blue Nile from 2018 to 2019 are linked to climate variability. The observed changes between 2020 and 2022 can largely be attributed to the filling stages of the GERD. Notably, these changes are most pronounced in the water retaining areas upstream of the GERD dam. The results also show that Roseires Dam could play a crucial role as a buffer, mitigating potential impacts imposed by the GERD, and serving as a conduit between the GERD and downstream communities.

Abstract:The unexpected drop of the Blue Nile water in July 2020, attributed to the sudden closure of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) during the first filling in 2020, significantly interrupted the water supply for Khartoum, Sudan. This incident pursued using satellites and hydrological models to estimate inflows into Roseires dam. A hydrological model was developed to predict GERD inflows, while reservoir levels were extracted from Sentinel-1, -2 and Jason-3. A water balance model was developed to predict GERD releases and the dates of overtopping during subsequent fillings events. The study demonstrates the effectiveness of satellite data and models for transboundary reservoir management.

Abstract:The Nile River stretches from south to north throughout the Nile River Basin (NRB) in Northeast Africa. Ethiopia, where the Blue Nile originates, has begun the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which will be used to generate electricity. However, the impact of the GERD on land deformation caused by significant water relocation has not been rigorously considered in the scientific research. In this study, we develop a novel approach for predicting large-scale land deformation induced by the construction of the GERD reservoir. We also investigate the limitations of using the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Follow On (GRACE-FO) mission to detect GERD-induced land deformation. We simulated three land deformation scenarios related to filling the expected reservoir volume, 70 km3, using 5-, 10-, and 15-year filling scenarios. The results indicated: (i) trends in downward vertical displacement estimated at −17.79 ± 0.02, −8.90 ± 0.09, and −5.94 ± 0.05 mm/year, for the 5-, 10-, and 15-year filling scenarios, respectively; (ii) the western (eastern) parts of the GERD reservoir are estimated to move toward the reservoir’s center by +0.98 ± 0.01 (−0.98 ± 0.01), +0.48 ± 0.00 (−0.48 ± 0.00), and +0.33 ± 0.00 (−0.33 ± 0.00) mm/year, under the 5-, 10- and 15-year filling strategies, respectively; (iii) the northern part of the GERD reservoir is moving southward by +1.28 ± 0.02, +0.64 ± 0.01, and +0.43 ± 0.00 mm/year, while the southern part is moving northward by −3.75 ± 0.04, −1.87 ± 0.02, and −1.25 ± 0.01 mm/year, during the three examined scenarios, respectively; and (iv) the GRACE-FO mission can only detect 15% of the large-scale land deformation produced by the GERD reservoir. Methods and results demonstrated in this study provide insights into possible impacts of reservoir impoundment on land surface deformation, which can be adopted into the GERD project or similar future dam construction plans.

Abstract:Abstract Increasing water and energy demands, hydroclimatic fluctuations, damming, and usage rights disputes present major challenges in managing transboundary rivers worldwide. Of particular interest is the Eastern Nile River Basin (ENRB), which is subject to broad debate over which modeling approach should be applied to resolve the disparities in transboundary water management among the river’s riparian nations, under increased upstream damming. Several studies have simulated the downstream High Aswan Dam (HAD) storage change during the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) filling under different hydrological conditions. However, their findings diverge regarding the impacts of GERD filling on HAD storage, especially when considering a specific, naturalized, historical 10-year period to represent the average flow condition used, as a benchmark for assessing potential downstream impacts. Our extended analysis of the Nile flow historical records demonstrates that considering a single historical 10-year period to simulate the downstream water budget, as performed in Wheeler et al. (Nat Commun 11:5222, 2020, https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-020-19089-x), widely communicated to policymakers as a robust proof that GERD filling will not generate a deficit at HAD under average flow conditions, is inconclusive as it strongly depend on the selection of the historical inflow period, due to the river high interannual flow variability. Our simulation results of 20 average/near average historical flow periods in Wheeler et al. (Nat Commun 11:5222, 2020, https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-020-19089-x)’s datasheet indicates that 60% of them generates a downstream water deficit ranging from 0.5 to 14.5 BCM under the same modeling conditions and filling policy. Therefore, considering the simulation results of multiple flow sequences is crucial for accurately reflecting the impact of the Nile’s high interannual flow variability on downstream water deficit assessments, thereby settling the disparities in transboundary water management forecasts for the impacts of GERD filling and operation.

Abstract:The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is constructed in a mountainous area where limited information has been collected on key environmental factors and which is lacking of information about site condition, hazards and environmental impacts. To deal with problems, the Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) DEM and Advanced Land Observation Satellite Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (ALOSPALSAR) were used to map factors that can lead to the GERD failure and predict the flooded area in Sudan and seawater intrusion in the Nile Delta, Egypt. The results showed that the Nubian Block and the GERD site are structurally controlled by sets of faults. Their trends are in the NNE–SSW, NE–SW, and NNW–SSE directions and share the similar trends with the shear stress and African Rift, which created some alarm. The results indicated that the maximum extent of the Sudanese inundation area, as estimated from a DEM using a flood basin model, was about 667,228 km2 along the Blue Nile River and was at high risk. The results also showed that one-third of the Nile Delta will experience seawater intrusions when the groundwater table depletes 5 m below sea level.

Abstract:Abstract The landscape of water infrastructure in the Nile Basin is changing with the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. Although this dam could improve electricity supply in Ethiopia and its neighbors, there is a lack of consensus between Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt on the dam operation. We introduce a new modeling framework that simulates the Nile River System and Egypt’s macroeconomy, with dynamic feedbacks between the river system and the macroeconomy. Because the two systems “coevolve” throughout multi-year simulations, we term this a “coevolutionary” modeling framework. The framework is used to demonstrate that a coordinated operating strategy could allow the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam to help meet water demands in Egypt during periods of water scarcity and increase hydropower generation and storage in Ethiopia during high flows. Here we show the hydrological and macroeconomic performance of this coordinated strategy compared to a strategy that resembles a recent draft proposal for the operation of the dam discussed in Washington DC.

Abstract:Abstract The potential effects of Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) failure on the downstream countries were numerically assessed. Flow discharge reaching Lake Nasser and the corresponding water levels were determined, and the inundated areas were defined as a result of GERD failure. High-resolution digital elevation model was developed with 2670-km length starting from GERD till Aswan High Dam. GERD’s reservoir, urban, and rural lands downstream of the GERD were presented using a numerical model. The modeled areas included parts of Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt, not to mention Toshka Spillway. The model areas were not divided into parts because of calculating the water levels at the existence of intermediate dams as model outputs. In case possible failure of GERD, Roseires and Sennar dams could collapse. Meanwhile, Merowe dam can sustain with the operation of its emergency spillway. Wave height reaches 100-m downstream of the GERD and 64-m and 31-m downstream of the Roseires and Merowe dams, respectively.

Abstract:Several studies have reported that the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) could have severe effects on the water resources in downstream countries, especially Egypt. These effects include changes in surface water level, groundwater levels in shallow and deep aquifers, saltwater intrusion, and increases in soil salinity, which could affect crop yields. This paper assesses the potential impacts of the GERD on the Nile Delta, Egypt. It includes the effects of reducing surface water levels (SWL) and changing the crop patterns at the groundwater levels (GWL), in addition to the effect of cultivating crops that consume less water on soil salinity. A pilot area is selected in the east of the Nile Delta for the assessment. The results of the study revealed that GWL is directly proportional to SWL. Comparing the case study of 2012, when SWL was reduced by 50%, the GWL decreased from 5.0 m to 2.0 m. After adjustment, the crop patterns from rice to other crops decreased the GWL to 1.30 m. Additionally, the results showed that there is a significant relationship between soil salinity and crop patterns. Soil salinity increased during the cultivation of the Delta with non-rice crops, such as grapes. Salinity increased from 0.45 S/m after 10 years of simulation to 0.48 S/m. This estimation highlights the undesirable effects of the GERD on Egypt’s water resources, soil salinity, crop yields, and national income.

Abstract:<span>For centuries and emboldened by colonial treaties, Egypt has enjoyed overwhelming hydro-hegemony in the (NBR) Nile Basin River region. However, Egyptian dominance over the NBR has been challenged by Ethiopia following her unilateral construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. Using A qualitative, deductive approach based on multiple sources of evidence, this paper analyses the historical imbalance in the Nile colonial treaties that gave Egypt monopoly over the waters of the NBR. The article also describes various human security threats in the Benishangul-Gumuz region, where the dam project is located and the geopolitical implications of this development against the backdrop of climate change and the coming of new actors and donors such as China, including the leasing of land to corporations and countries such as India, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. We recommend collaborative and holistic management instead of the dominant state-centric water development approach in this international waterway. The development of sustainable cooperation over this shared waterway will help meet climate change challenges and mitigate the contemporary conflict between Ethiopia and Egypt, including other countries within the region.</span>
Impact of reduced flow on 137Cs behavior in Ismailia Canal and surrounding groundwater systems

Abstract:This paper assesses the potential impact of reduced Nile water due to the construction of Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on flow and contaminant transport pattern in Ismailia Canal and its surrounding area. The groundwater/surface water system has been characterized, conceptualized, and modeled numerically and analytically, with assessing the response against this expected reduced discharge. The isotopic signature of seventeen samples helped in the identification of different recharge sources in the study area and demarcates the boundary conditions that might encounter the conceptualization of the study area. Based on the inflow/outflow components from MODFLOW under present-day conditions and reducing surface water discharge in the studied area, it was revealed that at the end of the year 2024, the contribution from the canal to the modeled groundwater system will be decreased by 6%, 8%, and 11%, by decreasing 20%, 30%, and 40% of the original canal flow according to three proposed scenarios. This reduced flow would increase the contaminate load of 137Cs in the groundwater system by 2.5-fold than that expected in case of the non-reduced flow in Ismailia Canal at the end of the simulation (year 2038). Furthermore, the impact of surface water conditions (flow, velocity, dispersion) on 137Cs dispersion and temporal/spatial distribution has been analyzed, revealing the side effect of GERD on Ismailia Canal, as a response to the decrement in the Nile flow.
The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD): Geopolitical Implications

Abstract:This study examined the geopolitical implications of the GERD project in light of the ̳framework of benefit-sharing‘. The study adopted a qualitative research approach in which data were gathered from multiple sources, such as key informant interviews, books, journal articles, policy briefs, commentary, and opinions; and documents such as declarations, agreements, letters, and statements, water policies, government communications, reports, and media sources. In light of this, the paper argues that GERD foreshadows a new emergent order based on principles of benefit-sharing capable of replacing the existing inequitable water-sharing regime. The GERD has the potential to create cooperation between the riparian countries because of its proven benefits to the region. The potential cost of non-cooperation may also push Egypt towards opting for cooperation. Furthermore, the GERD could shift the power dynamics by positioning Ethiopia as a regional anchor state, which could further enhance prospects for cooperation. The study also highlights that the conflict over the GERD extends beyond the physicality of the dam and is deeply rooted in the geopolitical rivalry between Ethiopia and Egypt. Egypt perceives the GERD as an existential threat to its existing water-sharing regime while Ethiopia regards it as a benefit-sharing project and an existential necessity. However, the study highlights the possibility that the GERD may transform the geopolitical rivalry between Ethiopia and Egypt from a water-based conflict into a power trade competition, implying that cooperation and conflict, competition and cooperation, may coexist in this complex geopolitical landscape. The study implies that understanding the geopolitical implications of the GERD is crucial for navigating the complexities of the issue and finding sustainable solutions. Exploring Cooperative Transboundary River Management Strategies for the Eastern Nile Basin

Abstract:Abstract A water resource modeling process is demonstrated to support multi‐stakeholder negotiations over transboundary management of the Nile River. This process addresses the challenge of identifying management options of new hydraulic infrastructure that potentially affects downstream co‐riparian nations, and how the management of existing infrastructure can be adapted. The method includes an exploration of potential management decisions using a multi‐objective evolutionary algorithm, intertwined with an iterative process of formulating cooperative strategies to overcome technical and political barriers faced in a transboundary negotiation. The case study is the addition of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), and considers how its operation may be coordinated with adaptations to the operations of Egypt's High Aswan Dam (HAD). The results demonstrate that a lack of coordination is likely to be harmful to downstream riparians, and suggests that adaptations to infrastructure in Sudan and Egypt can reduce risks to water supplies and energy generation. Although risks can be substantially reduced by agreed releases from the GERD and basic adaptations to the HAD, these measures are still insufficient to assure that no additional risk is assumed by Egypt. The method then demonstrates how improvements to water security for both downstream riparians can be achieved through dynamic adaptation of the operation of the GERD during drought conditions. Finally, the paper demonstrates how the robustness of potential management arrangements can be evaluated considering potential effects of climate change, including increased inter‐annual variability and highly uncertain changes such as increases in the future persistence of droughts.

Abstract:Arid ecohydrology relies on sporadic rainfall and flooding to sustain linear river oases, crucial for supporting flora and fauna during the long dry season and drought years. We analyse the hydro-geomorphological impacts of the large Neckartal Dam (completed in 2019) on the Fish River oasis based on existing dams, regional studies, field surveys, hydrological data, and modelling. The Neckartal Dam, along with three smaller dams, impounds 80 % of the desert oasis basin (1235 Mm 3 , 55,870 km 2 ), exceeding the average annual runoff threefold. A gradient of dam-induced changes was identified, varying with distance from the dam wall. Immediate downstream, hydromorphological impacts include channel narrowing (⁓15 %) and reduce mean annual sediment yield (⁓20 %). Also, water distribution losses create chronic low flows, favour for invasive flora and fauna to spread, significantly disrupting the pristine nature of the desert ecosystem. This phenomenon has been observed over a 70 km stretch below the Hardap Dam. This situation is irreversible, as the invasive flora can withstand even large floods. As the distance increases, the dam suppresses low to moderate annual floods and prolongs droughts from months to years or even decades. Based on our flood routing model, only the largest floods (recurrence interval, RI >25 years) can exceed the dam storage, continue downstream, transport sediment and maintain the pool-bar morphology along 245 km of the oasis. The lack of significant flows between major floods means that sediment from smaller, lower arid basins accumulates in the Fish River valley, filling pools and further reducing water availability during dry periods. The Neckartal Dam's impact assessment demonstrates potential changes in arid river systems globally.

Abstract:The Nile River is the primary water source for populous and hyper-arid Egypt. However, it suffers from the backfilling of its extensive network of waterways and increasing encroachments along its banks. The Nile’s waterways are among the world’s oldest and largest water irrigation systems. As an integral component of the Nile water system, they are vital in sustaining agriculture, inhabitants’ quality of life in urban and rural settings, and various ecosystem services. Therefore, raising public awareness and a sense of connectivity with the conservation of these waterways is one of the primary mitigation strategies for addressing the dire water deficit in Egypt resulting from rapid population growth and flow alteration associated with increased upstream damming. The large-scale degradation of the waterways system, observed since the mid-1980s, is perplexing, as Egyptians were historically more oriented to preserving the Nile ecosystem and the interrelated landscape for thousands of years. To assess the root cause of this phenomenon, we review the waterways’ public conservation campaigns and explore the grounds for their inefficiencies, failures, and subsequent impacts on transboundary water management. To achieve this objective, we compiled several research publications, local technical reports, and ground observations. Our results show that negligence toward the waterways accelerated during the nation’s transition from water sufficiency in the 1970s (1400 m3/capita/year) to the onset of scarcity in the 1980s (<1000 m3/capita/year). The water authorities’ delay of 15 years in implementing conservation campaigns, which were unhurriedly initiated in the mid-1990s, along with unsustainable landscape transformations, led to nationwide water misuse and sanitary degradation of the Nile’s infrastructure. Considering the findings of our review, we provide recommendations for improving the efficiency of waterways conservation campaigns. Our findings could be applied to other Nile riparian nations with similar environmental and socioeconomic settings.

Abstract:This research work was carried out using Geo-Slope software programmes, i.e., to compute the infiltration and slope stability analysis of the Grindeho dam using SEEP/W and SLOPE/W. Embankment dam failure may occur due to different reasons, such as structural instability, hydraulic conditions, seepage through the dam body and foundation. The determination of the factor of safety for the dam slope stability and quantify the amount of seepage through the dam, under different cases of operations, is vital to ascertain the dam overall safety. In this research, Finite Element modelling is used through Geo-Studio software to simulate slope stability and seepage analysis of the embankment dam. Three distinct operational cases are considered for the dam analysis: end of construction before filling the reservoir, after/full reservoir condition, and rapid reservoir condition drawdown. Four separate methods of analysis were used to verify the stability of the slope embankment: Morgenstern-Price, Bishop, Janbu, and Spencer. The requirements of the Benchmark Safety Legislation (US Army of Corps Engineers and British Dam Society) are observed. The simulation results of the upstream and downstream side of the dam section have a direct effect on the factor of safety, the outcome of the stability analysis performed showed that all sections of the dam are safe within the specified range of factors of safety for the potential all loading and operation cases. But all the slip surfaces move through the section of the dam shell, which shows that this zone is the weaker zone and requires spatial attention. The simulation results obtained from the SEEP/W program revealed that 15,291.5 m3/year and 22,818.56 m3/year amount of seepage loss is present in the Grindeho dam during the drawdown case and full reservoir case, respectively.

Abstract:Study region The Tekeze-Atbara-Setit (TAS) basin as a portion of the Eastern Nile Basin (ENB) in Africa. Study focus ENB consists of four sub-basins; one of them is the Tekeze-Atbara-Setit basin. TAS basin is subject to future water development projects, including irrigation projects and hydropower dams. Potential impacts of these projects need to be assessed regarding the inflow and hydroelectric generation at Egypt's High Aswan Dam (HAD). New hydrological insights for the region Two models are coupled offline; The Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model and HEC-Reservoir Simulation Model (HEC-ResSim). Base-case scenario is created without the expected future projects, in addition to five additional scenarios representing hydropower and irrigation projects. The maximum annual inflow at HAD declines by 1.6 km 3 in the hydropower scenarios, while the produced power at HAD descends by 9.5 %. The maximum reduction in the annual inflow for hydropower and irrigation projects scenario at HAD is 4.63 km 3 and 35.2 % for power reduction. Finally, the proposed future development project in TAS basin will have negative impacts on the flow, and generated hydropower at HAD in Egypt.

Abstract:The hydrological system of the Rift Valley Lakes in Ethiopia has recently experienced changes over the past 2 decades. Potential causes for these changes include anthropogenic, hydro-climatic, and geological factors. The main objective of this study was to utilize an integrated methodology to gain a comprehensive understanding of the hydrological systems and potential driving factors within a complex and data-scarce region. To this end, we integrated a hydrologic model, change point analysis, indicators of hydrological alteration (IHA), and a bathymetry survey to investigate hydrological dynamics and potential causes. A hydrologic model (the Soil and Water Assessment Tool Plus, SWAT + ) was parameterized for the gauged watersheds and extended to the ungauged watersheds using multi-site regionalization techniques. The SWAT + model performed very well to satisfactorily for daily streamflow in all watersheds with respect to the objective functions of the Kling–Gupta efficiency (KGE), the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), and percent bias (PBIAS). The findings reveal notable changes in lake inflows and lake levels over the past 2 decades. Lake Chamo experienced an increase in area of 30.1 km 2 (9.5 %), an increase in depth of 4.4 m (30.9 %), and an increase in volume of 7.8×108 m 3 (27.2 %). In contrast, Lake Abijata witnessed an extraordinary 68 % decrease in area and a depth decrease of 1.6 m (37.2 %). During the impact period, the mean annual rainfall experienced a decrease of 6.5 % and 2.7 % over Lake Abijata and Lake Chamo, respectively. Actual evapotranspiration decreased by 2.9 % in Lake Abijata but increased by up to 4.5 % in Lake Chamo. Surface inflow to Lake Abijata decreased by 12.5 %, while Lake Chamo experienced an 80.5 % increase in surface inflow. Sediment depth in Lake Chamo also increased by 0.6 m (4.2 %). The results highlight that the changing hydrological regime in Lake Chamo is driven by increased surface runoff and sediment intrusion associated with anthropogenic influences. The hydrological regime of Lake Abijata is affected by water abstraction from feeding rivers and lakes for industrial and irrigation purposes. This integrated methodology provides a holistic understanding of complex data-scarce hydrological systems and potential driving factors in the Rift Valley Lakes in Ethiopia, which could have global applicability.
