Abstract:Background: Despite all the positive features of the internet, the risk of addiction threatens users. Sleep disorders and the negative effects on self-efficacy are important risks of this technology. Accordingly, the present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of modifying the parent-child interaction pattern based on play therapy (filial therapy) on internet addiction, sleep quality, and self-efficacy in 9-12-year-old children. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted using a pre-test-post-test design with a control group. The statistical population of the study consisted of all 3617 boys and girls aged 9-12 years studying in selected schools in Kerman, Iran (12 elementary schools) in the academic year 2020-2021. A total of 72 students were randomly selected from among the children who met the benchmark score of internet addiction and were not under medical and psychological treatment. The participants were divided into two experimental and control groups (36 students each). A demographic information questionnaire, the Internet Addiction Scale (YIAS), the Self-Efficacy Questionnaire for Children (SEQ-C), and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were used to collect data. Data were analyzed using SPSS software. Findings: The mean scores of internet addiction in the pre-test and post-test were 86.67 and 86.23 in the control group and 88.14 and 75.14 in the experimental group, respectively, which showed a decrease in internet addiction. The scores of sleep quality in the pre-test and post-test were 1.81 and 1.78 in the control group and 1.75 and 0.5 in the experimental group, respectively. Moreover, the overall scores of self-efficacy in the pre-test and post-test were 63.64 and 63.94 in the control group and 62.08 and 81.75 in the experimental group, respectively. The results indicated an improvement in the overall quality of sleep and selfefficacy. Conclusion: The results showed that the severity of internet addiction in children decreased after the treatment based on modifying the parent-child interaction, and this treatment was also effective on self-efficacy and sleep disorders.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Internet addiction (IA) is a severe problem, especially in academic communities. The association between IA and unfavorable emotional conditions (e.g., anxiety, stress, and depression) can harm students' relationships and academic and career performance. The present study evaluated (a) the prevalence of IA in a sample of medical sciences university students; (b) the association between IA and depression, anxiety, stress, and sleep disorders; and (c) the association between demographic characteristics and IA, depression, anxiety, and stress.MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 268 students from Abadan University of Medical Sciences were selected using Morgan Table. The participants responded to the Young Internet Addiction Test, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-42, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, independent sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, and least significant difference.RESULTS: The mean score of IA was 45.65 ± 35.40. IA was found to be significantly related to depression, anxiety, stress, and sleep disorders (except for sleep disturbance) (P < 0.001). Males were found to be more likely than females to suffer from IA, depression, anxiety, stress, and sleep disorders. Furthermore, age was inversely related to IA, depression, and stress. Finally, medical sciences students suffered from depression, anxiety, and stress more than students majoring in other fields.CONCLUSIONS: The simultaneous occurrence of IA and depression, anxiety, stress, and sleep disorders in students indicates that IA is associated with other psychological problems. Therefore, researchers and policymakers need to identify preventive measures to help internet-addicted students.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Internet addiction is a global phenomenon that causes serious problems in mental health and social communication. Students form a vulnerable group, since they have free, easy, and daily access to the internet.OBJECTIVES: The current study aimed to investigate perceived social support, self-esteem, and internet addiction among Al-Zahra University students.MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the current descriptive research, the statistical sample consisted of 101 female students residing at AL-Zahra University dormitory, Tehran, Iran. Participants were randomly selected and their identities were classified. Then, they completed the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Rosenberg's Self-esteem Scale, and Yang Internet Addiction Test. After completion of the questionnaires, the data were analyzed using the correlation test and stepwise regression.RESULTS: The Pearson correlation coefficient indicated significant relationships between self-esteem and internet addiction (P < 0.05, r = -0.345), perceived social support (r = 0.224, P < 0.05), and the subscale of family (r = 0.311, P < 0.05). The findings also demonstrated a significant relationship between internet addiction and perceived social support (r = -0.332, P < 0.05), the subscale of family (P < 0.05, r = -0.402), and the other subscales (P < 0.05, r = -0.287). Results of the stepwise regression showed that the scale of internet addiction and the family subscale were predicative variables for self-esteem (r = 0.137, P < 0.01, F2, 96 = 77.7).CONCLUSIONS: Findings of the current study showed that persons with low self-esteem were more vulnerable to internet addiction.

Abstract:The major channels for solute diffusion across dentin are the dentinal tubules. Since dentin permeation is proportional to the product of tubule number and diameter, both of which increase as the tubules converge on the pulp, we find that dentin permeability increases rapidly as the pulp chamber is approached. The presence of a smear layer of cutting debris on top of cut dentin decreases dentin permeability, especially when permeability is measured by fluid filtration. Further, intratubular material — such as mineral deposits, collagen fibrils, proteoglycan linings, bacteria, etc. — can greatly reduce dentin permeability. Although the presence of irregular or irritation dentin has been thought to greatly reduce dentin permeability, recent in vivo experiments in dogs indicate that the dentin permeability of freshly cut cavities prepared in sound dentin falls very rapidly (i.e., 50-60% in the first six hours) before any histologic changes can be detected, either in the pulp or the dentin. When dogs were depleted of their plasma fibrinogen, this rapid decline in dentin permeability following cavity preparation failed to take place. The results implicate leakage of plasma proteins from the underlying pulpal vessels. The proteins subsequently permeate the tubules, where they are either adsorbed to the tubule walls or physically trapped in such a way as to reduce dentin permeability.

Abstract:Background and aims: Internet addiction (IA) could be a major concern in university medical students aiming to develop into health professionals. The implications of this addiction as well as its association with sleep, mood disorders and self-esteem can hinder their studies, impact their long-term career goals and have wide and detrimental consequences for society as a whole. The objectives of this study were to: 1) Assess potential IA in university medical students, as well as factors associated with it; 2) Assess the relationships between potential IA, insomnia, depression, anxiety, stress and self-esteem. Methods: Our study was a cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey conducted among 600 students of three faculties: medicine, dentistry and pharmacy at Saint-Joseph University. Four validated and reliable questionnaires were used: the Young Internet Addiction Test, the Insomnia Severity Index, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS 21), and the Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale (RSES). Results: The average YIAT score was 30 ± 18.474; Potential IA prevalence rate was 16.8% (95% confidence interval: 13.81-19.79%) and it was significantly different between males and females (p-value = 0.003), with a higher prevalence in males (23.6% versus 13.9%). Significant correlations were found between potential IA and insomnia, stress, anxiety, depression and self-esteem (p-value < 0.001); ISI and DASS sub-scores were higher and self-esteem lower in students with potential IA. Conclusions: Identifying students with potential IA is important because this addiction often coexists with other psychological problems. Therefore, interventions should include not only IA management but also associated psychosocial stressors such as insomnia, anxiety, depression, stress, and self-esteem.

Abstract:Background and aims There is growing evidence on the contribution of psychological factors to internet addiction; yet it remains inconsistent and deserves further exploration. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the psychological symptoms (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms, stress, depression, anxiety and loneliness) and internet addiction (IA) among the university students in Malaysia. Materials and methods A total of 480 students from different faculties in a Malaysian public university participated in this study. They were selected by simple random sampling method. They completed self-administered questionnaires including the Malay Version of Internet Addiction Test (MVIAT)) to measure internet addiction and Adult Self-Report Scale (ASRS) Symptom Checklist, Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS) and UCLA Loneliness Scale (Version 3) to assess for ADHD symptoms, depression, anxiety, stress, and loneliness respectively. Results The prevalence of IA among university students was 33.33% (n = 160). The respondents’ mean age was 21.01 ± 1.29 years old and they were predominantly females (73.1%) and Malays (59.4%). Binary logistic regression showed that gender (p = 0.002; OR = 0.463, CI = 0.284–0.754), ADHD inattention (p = 0.003; OR = 2.063, CI = 1.273–3.345), ADHD hyperactivity (p<0.0001; OR = 2.427, CI = 1.495–3.939), stress (p = 0.048; OR = 1.795, CI = 1.004–3.210) and loneliness (p = 0.022; OR = 1.741, CI = 1.084–2.794) were significantly associated with IA. Conclusion A third of university students had IA. In addition, we found that those who were at risk of IA were males, with ADHD symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity, who reported stress and loneliness. Preventive strategy to curb internet addiction and its negative sequelae may consider these factors in its development and implementation.

Abstract:Background and Objective: After the outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in Iran, to prevent the spread of coronavirus, it was decided for classes to be held virtually. Even though this decision reduced the spread of the virus, the students were exposed to smartphone addiction, which is believed to have high comorbidity with psychological problems. The current study aims to examine the relationship between sleep quality and academic performance with the degree of dependence on smartphone during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and Methods: The current research was a cross-sectional study with 254 adolescent students participating in virtual classes. This study was conducted in 2020-2021. The participants filled out the following questionnaires online: Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), smartphone addiction scale (SAS), and Educational Performance Test (EPT). The data were analyzed using SPSS software, descriptive statistics [frequency, pearson correlation, mean, standard deviation (SD)], and inferential statistics (simultaneous regression) (P < 0.05). Results: There was a significant correlation between components of addiction to the Internet and the study’s variables. The results of correlation analysis showed that there was a significant correlation between Internet addiction and academic performance (Pearson correlation = -0.57, P = 0.01) and between Internet addiction and sleep quality (Pearson correlation = 0.47, P = 0.01). Conclusion: According to the results, it can be concluded that after the COVID-19 pandemic and virtual education, Internet addiction could be a risk factor for decreasing sleep quality and academic performance in students.

Abstract:Background: At present, the cell-phone is not only a talking tool but also a virtual network connection in the individual’s daily life as people can connect easily in one click of finger through internet. Use mobile for more time may enhance the chance to several health risk and psychiatric disorders, such as anxiety disorders and depression. Aims and Objectives: The aim of this study is to access sleep quality and internet addiction in these students using Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and internet addiction scale, respectively. Materials and Methods: The study was designed as a cross-sectional and questionnaire-based study. This study has been conducted among 300 college students in India through online, emails, and social media. Data analysis has been done on PSQI score and Internet addition score among the subjects. Results: The results of this study demonstrated significant associations of Internet addiction and poorer quality of sleep in those who have moderate and severe internet addiction than normal internet users. Conclusion: In the present study, more percentage of students met the criteria for poor sleep quality and internet addiction as well as have positive association with the different degrees of internet addiction.

Abstract:Background: Internet addiction and poor sleep quality are two types of common mental health disorders among high school students. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of poor sleep quality and its association with internet addiction in high school students. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 820 high school students in Dong Hoa town, Phu Yen province in April 2021. The students were requested to fill out a structured questionnaire. internet addiction was evaluated by the short version Internet Addiction Test (s-IAT). The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality. Results: The prevalence of poor sleep quality was 33.5% among high school students. The proportion of students with internet addiction evaluated by the s-IAT was 21%. The association between internet addiction and poor sleep quality remained statistically significant with p<0,001 (OR=2.98, 95% CI: 2.05-4.34) after adjusting for potential confounding variables. Conclusion: The proportions of internet addiction and poor sleep quality were high and there was an association between them. Students should not use the internet after 9 pm and should spend at least 8 hours each night on sleep.

Abstract:Abstract Background The increase in the number of Internet users has increased Internet dependence worldwide. In adolescents, this dependence may interfere with sleep, which is important for the development of psychophysiological capabilities. However, few large-scale surveys have described the relationship between Internet addiction (IA) and sleep disturbance using standardized questionnaires. We conducted a survey in one prefecture in Japan to determine the relationship between sleep disturbance and IA in adolescents based on the categories of the Young Diagnostic Questionnaire (YDQ). Methods In 2016, high school students ( N = 10,405, age range: 15–16 years) in all 54 daytime high schools in the selected prefecture were surveyed using a self-administered questionnaire. Participants with scores > 5.5 points on the Japanese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were defined as having a sleep disturbance. IA was evaluated using the YDQ: Participants with five to eight YDQ items present were classified as having IA; those with three or four items present were classified as “at risk of IA”; and those with two or less YDQ items were classified as “non-IA”. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed with sleep disturbance as the dependent variable, IA as the explanatory variable, and adjustments for eight other variables. Results High YDQ scores were associated with a high prevalence of sleep disturbance in boys and girls. These findings persisted after controlling for other factors in the multiple regression model. Conclusions Among Japanese adolescents, there was a significant independent relationship between IA and sleep disturbance.

Abstract:The aim of the present study was to examine the association between Internet addiction (IA), fatigue, and sleep problems among university students. A total of 3000 Turkish students aged 18 to 25 years were approached and 2350 students (78.3%) participated in this cross-sectional study from April 2017 to September 2017 in public and private universities in Istanbul. Data were collected via a structured questionnaire including socio-demographic details, lifestyle and dietary habits, Internet Addiction Test (IAT), Fatigue Scale, and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). Descriptive statistics, multivariate, and factorial analyses were performed. The overall prevalence of IA among the studied population was 17.7%. There were significant differences between gender, family income, father’s occupation, school performance, frequency and duration of watching television, physical activity, Internet use duration, and sleep duration (all p < 0.001). Significant differences were also found between participants with IA and those without IA in having headaches, blurred vision, double vision, hurting eyes, hearing problems, and eating fast food frequently (all p < 0.001). Using multivariate regression analysis, the duration of Internet use, physical and mental symptoms, headache, hurting eyes, tired eyes, hearing problems, and ESS scores were significantly associated with (and primary predictors of) IA. The present study demonstrated that IA was associated with poor dietary habits, sleep problems, and fatigue symptoms.

Abstract:Background The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the lives of many people, including medical students. The present study explored internet addiction and changes in sleep patterns among medical students during the pandemic and assessed the relationship between them. Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out in seven countries, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Guyana, India, Mexico, Pakistan, and Sudan, using a convenience sampling technique, an online survey comprising demographic details, information regarding COVID-19, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the Internet Addiction Test (IAT). Results In total, 2749 participants completed the questionnaire. Of the total, 67.6% scored above 30 in the IAT, suggesting the presence of an Internet addiction, and 73.5% scored equal and above 5 in the PSQI, suggesting poor sleep quality. Internet addiction was found to be significant predictors of poor sleep quality, causing 13.2% of the variance in poor sleep quality. Participants who reported COVID-19 related symptoms had disturbed sleep and higher internet addiction levels when compared with those who did not. Participants who reported a diagnosis of COVID-19 reported poor sleep quality. Those living with a COVID-19 diagnosed patient reported higher internet addiction and worse sleep quality compared with those who did not have any COVID-19 patients in their surroundings. Conclusion The results of this study suggest that internet addiction and poor sleep quality are two issues that require addressing amongst medical students. Medical training institutions should do their best to minimize their negative impact, particularly during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Network analysis of internet addiction and sleep disturbance symptoms

Abstract:Background: Internet addiction (IA) is a behavioral addiction to problematic internet use. IA is associated with poorer sleep quality. Few studies to date, however, have explored the interactions between symptoms of IA and symptoms of sleep disturbance. This study uses network analysis to identify bridge symptoms by analyzing these interactions in a large sample of students. Method: We recruited 1977 university students to participate in our study. Each student completed the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). We used these collected data for network analysis to identify the bridge symptoms in the IAT-PSQI network by calculating the bridge centrality. Furthermore, the closest symptom connected with the bridge symptom was found to identify the comorbidity mechanisms. Results: The core symptom of IA and the sleep disturbance network was "I08" (Study efficiency suffers due to internet use). The bridge symptoms between IA and sleep disturbance were "I14" (Surfing the internet late instead of sleeping), "P_DD" (Daytime dysfunction), and "I02" (Spending much time online instead of socializing in real life). Among the symptoms, "I14" had the highest bridge centrality. The edge connecting nodes "I14" and "P_SDu" (Sleep duration) had the strongest weight (0.102) around all the symptoms of sleep disturbance. Nodes "I14" and "I15" (Thinking about online shopping, games, social networking, and other network activities when unable to access the internet) had the strongest weight (0.181), connecting all the symptoms of IA. Conclusions: IA leads to poorer sleep quality, most likely by shortening sleep duration. Preoccupation with and craving the internet while being offline may lead to this situation. Healthy sleep habits should be learned, and craving may be a good point at which to treat the symptoms of IA and sleep disturbance.

Abstract:Background and Aim: This research was conducted with the aim of investigating the mediating role of Islamic quality of life in the relationship between basic psychological needs and addiction to online games in high school students. Methods: It was a descriptive correlational research based on the structural equation modeling method. The statistical population of the research was made up of all 658 male students of the first secondary school of the ninth grade in 5 public schools of Babol city in the academic year of 2023. In this research, to determine the sample size according to the number of observed variables and assigning a coefficient of 30 (9 observed variables in the model), and taking into account the possibility of incomplete questionnaires, 300 people were selected as the sample size using the available method. The research tools included online game addiction questionnaire of Whang, & Chang (2002), basic psychological needs questionnaire of Deci & Ryan (2000) and quality of life questionnaire of Islaminejad Mohammadnamaghi et al.'s (2014). Data analysis was done by structural equation method based on regression equations. Results: The findings showed that there is a significant relationship between basic psychological needs and the quality of Islamic life with addiction to online games in first secondary school students, and the research model was confirmed, and in general, 41% of addiction to online games is caused by basic psychological needs. knowledge and quality of Islamic life in first secondary students. Also, the variables of basic psychological needs and quality of Islamic life have a significant direct effect on addiction to online games in first secondary school students, and the indirect path of basic psychological needs with the mediation of quality of Islamic life on addiction to online games in first secondary school students is confirmed. Conclusion: This research provides practical implications for psychologists and counselors regarding the role of cognitive and religious factors in students' tendency to become addicted to online games.

Abstract:Objective: To establish the relationship between disturbances of the regime and quality of night sleep and daytime sleepiness in adolescents from Central Siberia with internet addiction with different types of content consumed. Material and methods: A single cross-sectional observational study of a school sample in three large cities in Siberia was performed. The study included 4615 schoolchildren aged 12-18 years (46.2% boys and 53.8% girls, average age 14.58±0.02 years). To identify Internet addiction and its types the following tests were used: the Chen scale (CIAS), adapted by V.L. Malygin and K.A. Feklisov; Russian-language versions of the Game Addiction Scale for Adolescents and the Social Media Disorder Scale. Questions from the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were used to assess nighttime sleep. Daytime sleepiness was assessed by the Pediatric Daytime Sleepiness Scale (PDSS). Results: Adolescents with Internet addiction are characterized by late going to bed (p<0.001), late awakening (p=0.016), a decrease in the duration of night sleep (p=0.004), an increase in the time to fall asleep and frequent nighttime awakenings (p=0.017), and more pronounced daytime sleepiness (p<0.001). Conclusion: Internet-addicted adolescents are characterized by significant disturbances in the quality of night sleep, which requires appropriate psychological and pedagogical correction.
The relationship between internet addiction and lifestyle among high school students: A cross sectional in the west of Iran

Abstract:Excessive internet usage can precipitate internet addiction (IA), negatively impacting lifestyle behaviors, especially during adolescence. These warrants investigating associations between IA and lifestyle factors. To examine the relationship between IA and health-promoting lifestyle dimensions among Iranian high school students. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 407 students from Sanandaj, Iran selected via cluster sampling. IA was assessed using the Young IA Test. Lifestyle was measured via the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile questionnaire. Regression analyses evaluated associations while adjusting for covariates. Approximately 25% of participants were at risk of internet addiction. Prevalence variations across groups lacked significance. Non-addicted students had significantly higher overall healthy lifestyle scores (p<0.05). Spiritual growth, health responsibility and nutrition scores significantly differed between addicted and non-addicted students. Regression analyses revealed a statistically significant negative correlation between IA and lifestyle even after adjustment (p<0.001). Nutrition and physical activity scores particularly declined for those at risk of addiction. IA was significantly associated with unhealthy dietary habits, sedentary behavior, and a lower healthy lifestyle. It may also hinder stress management and spiritual well-being. With rising internet integration, collaborative awareness programs between educational institutions, families, and communities are warranted to curb addiction risks and promote healthy lifestyles in youth. This study provides valuable insights, though longitudinal research is needed to establish causality.
The effect of internet addiction and smartphone addiction on sleep quality among Turkish adolescents

Abstract:Background: Sleep quality plays a principal role in the protection of health. There is an increasing number of studies in the literature demonstrating that internet addiction and smartphone addiction impair sleep quality. However, the number of studies on Turkish adolescents is very limited. Therefore, this study examined the effects of internet addiction and smartphone addiction on sleep quality among Turkish adolescents. Methods: Participants in this cross-sectional study were 910 adolescents aged 13–18 years. Data were collected with the Short Internet Addiction Test, Smartphone Addiction Scale, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. In addition, a questionnaire was used to gather information about the demographic, socioeconomic, and health-related characteristics. Pearson’s Chi-square test, Chi-square test for trend, Mann–Whitney U test, logistic regression analysis, and Spearman’s correlation analysis were used in the analysis. Results: The sleep quality of 58.7% of the adolescents was poor. Additionally, girls and adolescents ≥16 years old had poor sleep quality. Sleep quality deteriorated as perceived health status and perceived economic status of family deteriorated. Compared to participants with normal internet addiction scores, poor sleep quality was 1.83 (95% CI [1.22–2.74]) times higher in those with problematic internet addiction and 1.99 (95% CI [1.23–3.87]) times higher in those with pathological internet addiction. One point increase in Smartphone Addiction Scale total score increased poor sleep quality 1.01 (95% CI [1.00–1.02]) times. Sleep quality scale were positively correlated with the smartphone addiction and internet addiction. However, there was no positive correlation between habitual sleep efficiency subcomponent of sleep quality and smartphone addiction and internet addiction. Conclusions: Internet addiction and smartphone addiction were associated with poor sleep quality in adolescents. Older adolescents (≥16 years), gender (female), poor health perception, and perception of moderate economic status of the family were other factors associated with poor sleep quality.

Abstract:Background Excessive use of the internet among adolescents often led to later bedtimes and poor sleep quality. This study assessed the relationship between internet addiction and sleep quality among adolescents in a peri-urban setting in Nepal. Method This cross-sectional study employed a questionnaire survey among 390 adolescent students recruited from two schools in Kirtipur Municipality in Nepal. The Internet Addiction Test and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were used to assess internet addiction and poor sleep quality respectively. The association between internet addiction and sleep quality was analysed by logistic regression. Results One-fifth (21.5%) of the participants were identified with borderline internet addiction and 13.3% with possible internet addiction. Poor sleep quality was found among 31% of the participants. Internet addiction was significantly associated with poor sleep quality (OR = 1.85, p = 0.022 for borderline, and OR = 3.98, p = <0.001 for possible internet addiction compared to no internet addiction). Conclusion Adolescents with internet addiction were more vulnerable to suffer from poor sleep quality. It is recommended that municipalities and schools should aware the adolescent students on the adverse effects of excessive internet use including poor sleep quality. The findings have implications for adolescents, parents, school authorities and researchers.
