Abstract:This paper proposes a trajectory tracking algorithm that uses Model Predictive Control (MPC) to address the issue of poor tracking performance of the Flapping-wing UAV. However, due to the difficulty in constructing a prediction model, the high computational complexity, and the poor real-time performance of MPC, we propose a Model-Free Predictive Control (MFPC) algorithm that uses a dynamic linearized model as the prediction model. It greatly reduces complexity and running time while satisfying control performance. To address the effects of the inaccuracy of the prediction model and disturbances such as crosswind on the tracking performance of MFPC, we optimize the feedback correction law of MFPC using the L1 algorithm idea and significantly improve the robustness of the resulting MFPC-L1. Simulation results demonstrate that MFPC-L1 can reduce the computation time for a given trajectory by approximately 46% compared to the classical MPC. Moreover, it reduces the tracking errors of circular and S-shaped trajectories by over 96% compared to PID and Model-Free Adaptive Control (MFAC) algorithm. In the presence of crosswind, MFPC-L1 reduces the tracking errors by approximately 85% compared to the MFPC-PD algorithm based on the lateral offset PD feedback correction law without L1 algorithm optimization. Therefore, the simulation results indicate that MFPC-L1 has strong robustness in the trajectory-tracking control of the Flapping-wing UAV.

Abstract:A spherical robot is a nonlinear, nonholonomic, and unstable system which increases the difficulty of the direction and trajectory tracking problem. In this study, we propose a new direction controller Hierarchical Terminal Sliding Mode Controller (HTSMC), an instruction planning controller called Model Prediction Control-based Planner (MPCBP), and a trajectory tracking framework named MPCBP-HTSMC-HSMC (MHH). The HTSMC is designed by integrating a fast terminal algorithm, a hierarchical method, the motion features of a spherical robot, and its dynamics. In addition, the new direction controller has an excellent control effect with a quick response speed and strong stability. MPCBP can obtain optimal commands that are then transmitted to the velocity and direction controller. Since the two torque controllers in MHH are all Lyapunov-based sliding mode controllers, the MHH framework may achieve optimal control performance while assuring stability. Finally, the two controllers eliminate the requirement for MPCBP's stability and dynamic constraints. Finally, hardware experiments demonstrate the efficacy of the HTSMC, MPCBP, and MHH.

Abstract:Aiming at the formation control of multiple Mecanum-wheeled mobile robots (MWMRs) with physical constraints and model uncertainties, a novel robust control scheme that combines model predictive control (MPC) and extended state observer-based adaptive sliding mode control (ESO-ASMC) is proposed in this paper. First, a linear MPC strategy is proposed to address the motion constraints of MWMRs, which can transform the robot formation model based on leader-follower into a constrained quadratic programming (QP) problem. The QP problem can be solved iteratively online by a delay neural network (DNN) to obtain the optimal control velocity of the follower robot. Then, to address the input saturation constraints, model uncertainties and unknown disturbances in the dynamic model, an improved ESO-ASMC is proposed and compared with the robust adaptive terminal sliding mode control (RATSMC) and the conventional sliding mode control (SMC) to prove the effectiveness. The proposed scheme, considering the optimal control velocity obtained by the kinematics controller as the given desired velocity of the dynamics controller, can implement precise formation control, while solving various physical constraints of the robot, and eliminating the effects of model uncertainties and disturbances. Finally, through a comparative simulation case, the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method are verified.

Abstract:Mecanum-wheeled omnidirectional mobile robot (MWOMR) is playing an increasingly significant role in modern transportation and industry due to its high flexibility and maneuverability. This paper presents an adaptive integral terminal sliding mode (AITSM) control algorithm for an MWOMR trajectory-tracking task. Initially, a four-inputs-three-outputs kinematic-and-dynamic model is identified to describe the MWOMR’s trajectory-tracking behavior. Subsequently, an AITSM controller is designed for the MWOMR, where the stability of control system is theoretically validated by means of Lyapunov. For comparison, a conventional sliding mode (CSM) controller and a nonsingular terminal sliding mode (NTSM) controller are also designed as benchmarks. Finally, simulations are executed to test the performance of proposed control laws in various scenarios. The simulation results substantiate that our AITSM control strategy is an effective solution to the MWOMR trajectory-tracking problem, which exhibits remarkable superiority in terms of tracking precision and control robustness compared with the CSM and NTSM control.

A Tube Model Predictive Control Method for Autonomous Lateral Vehicle Control Based on Sliding Mode Control

Abstract:This paper aims to enhance the lateral path tracking control of autonomous vehicles (AV) in the presence of external disturbances. While AV technology has made significant strides, real-world driving scenarios often pose challenges such as slippery or uneven roads, which can adversely affect the lateral path tracking control and reduce driving safety and efficiency. Conventional control algorithms struggle to address this issue due to their inability to account for unmodeled uncertainties and external disturbances. To tackle this problem, this paper proposes a novel algorithm that combines robust sliding mode control (SMC) and tube model predictive control (MPC). The proposed algorithm leverages the strengths of both MPC and SMC. Specifically, MPC is used to derive the control law for the nominal system to track the desired trajectory. The error system is then employed to minimize the difference between the actual state and the nominal state. Finally, the sliding surface and reaching law of SMC are utilized to derive an auxiliary tube SMC control law, which helps the actual system keep up with the nominal system and achieve robustness. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms conventional tube MPC, linear quadratic regulator (LQR) algorithms, and MPC in terms of robustness and tracking accuracy, especially in the presence of unmodeled uncertainties and external disturbances.

Abstract:In this paper, a double‐loop control method is proposed to improve the trajectory tracking performance of a wheeled mobile robot (WMR) with slippage properties and external disturbances. Considering the strong robustness and the ability to enable the system to converge in a short time, the predefined‐time sliding mode control (PTSMC) strategy is applied to the design of a double‐loop controller. Furthermore, a nonlinear disturbance observer (NDO) is adopted to comply with the feedforward compensation of the external disturbances. In turn, the controller only needs to deal with the internal disturbance of the system under the premise of using the NDO, thereby reducing the burden of the sliding mode controller. Based on Lyapunov methods, the stability of the double‐loop controller and the NDO is analyzed. Finally, the feasibility of the double‐loop control strategy is proven by simulations of the WMR operating along circular, sin‐shaped, and eight‐shaped roads.

Abstract:In order to solve the problems of low tracking accuracy and large steady-state error in track tracking of wheeled mobile robots, a MPC control scheme combining feedforward and feedback control is designed on the basis of Traditional Model Predictive Control (TMPC). First, when establishing the WMR kinematic error model, the linearization error is retained, and the control input and incremental constraints are considered. Secondly, a feedforward controller is designed for a given desired trajectory of wheeled mobile robot; At the same time, the multi constraint model predictive control (MMPC) strategy with speed optimization is added to design the feedback controller. Then, the stability of the designed MMPC controller is analyzed based on Lyapunov theory. Finally, MMPC control scheme is compared with TMPC control scheme and PID control scheme. The results show that compared with TMPC control scheme, MMPC control scheme reduces the lateral error by 17.87%, the longitudinal error by 17.12%, and the heading angle error by 9.81%; Compared with the PID control scheme, the lateral error is reduced by 20.82%, the longitudinal error is reduced by 23.26%, and the heading angle error is reduced by 5.87%.

Abstract:In response to the challenge of insufficient trajectory tracking accuracy and low solution efficiency of Mecanum wheel AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) under complex and constrained working conditions, this paper proposes an efficient Model Predictive Control (MPC) method to achieve superior tracking performance and robustness. Initially, a linear error model of the mobile platform is established based on pose error, serving as the predictive model for the MPC controller. A target function is designed to transform the trajectory tracking control problem into an optimal control problem. To handle inequality constraints, penalty terms are introduced into the objective function, and the resulting constrained problem is subsequently solved to approximate the optimal solution for the original inequalities. To alleviate the computational burden associated with real-time optimization problem-solving, an efficient MPC algorithm. has been developed. To ensure closed-loop stability under the MPC control method, stability constraints are imposed on the new optimization problem. Simulation results demonstrate that, in comparison to traditional MPC methods, the proposed approach reduces the average solution calculation time by 5.1% and the maximum single calculation time by 13.7%, all while maintaining trajectory tracking accuracy. These results validate the algorithm's feasibility, effectively addressing the challenges associated with solving MPC problems.

Abstract:This paper studies the trajectory tracking control for the nonholonomic wheeled mobile robot (WMR) based on model predictive control (MPC). Concerning overcome stable problem occurred from optimization control of MPC, we develop an MPC controller subjected to Lyapunov-based input constraints (LMPC) to solve the trajectory tracking problem for the nonholonomic WMR. The Lyapunov stable characteristic of the feedback linearization (FL) is utilized to ensure the stability of the control system. The recursive feasibility of input and stability of the control system based on LMPC is analyzed by the contraction constraint of FL. Besides, the paper also demonstrates the stability of the trajectory tracking control by the receding horizon optimized control solution embedded in LMPC. The simulation experiment results significantly verify the validity of the proposed LMPC approach in trajectory tracking.

Abstract:Parameter fluctuations, unmodeled dynamics, speed variation, steering actuator faults, and other multi-channel uncertain disturbances are the key challenges faced by the path tracking control of intelligent vehicles, which will affect the accuracy and stability of the path tracking. Therefore, a model predictive control (MPC) method based on a dual-stage disturbance observer (DDOB) is proposed in this paper. First, a tracking error dynamics model considering multi-channel uncertain disturbances is constructed, based on which a model predictive controller is designed to obtain the nominal front wheel steering angle by the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) condition. Furthermore, the dual-stage disturbance observer is designed to enable real-time estimation of the system disturbances, and then the estimated disturbances are used as the compensation for the nominal front wheel steering angle, which establishes the MPC control law with parallel compensation of the dual-stage disturbance observer. Finally, the error boundedness of the dual-stage disturbance observer and the global stability of the model predictive controller are analyzed. The effectiveness and superiority of the proposed algorithm are verified through Carsim-Simulink simulation and hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) experiments.

Abstract:This paper explores the trajectory tracking control problem for a wheeled mobile robot (WMR) in an environment with obstacles and unknown disturbances. A fixed-time extended state observer is presented, which is utilized to estimate unknown disturbances and improve the convergence speed of estimation errors. By introducing the obstacle avoidance cost, a model predictive controller with disturbance compensation is proposed to guarantee desired tracking performance in the presence of obstacles. The proposed method is analyzed for recursive feasibility and closed-loop system stability subject to unknown disturbances and obstacles. Finally, both simulation and experiment are conducted to express the satisfactory tracking effect of the developed approach.

Abstract:The trajectory tracking control performance of nonholonomic wheeled mobile robots (NWMRs) is subject to nonholonomic constraints, system uncertainties, and external disturbances. This paper proposes a barrier function-based adaptive sliding mode control (BFASMC) method to provide high-precision, fast-response performance and robustness for NWMRs. Compared with the conventional adaptive sliding mode control, the proposed control strategy can guarantee that the sliding mode variables converge to a predefined neighborhood of origin with a predefined reaching time independent of the prior knowledge of the uncertainties and disturbances bounds. Another advantage of the proposed algorithm is that the control gains can be adaptively adjusted to follow the disturbances amplitudes thanks to the barrier function. The benefit is that the overestimation of control gain can be eliminated, resulting in chattering reduction. Moreover, a modified barrier function-like control gain is employed to prevent the input saturation problem due to the physical limit of the actuator. The stability analysis and comparative experiments demonstrate that the proposed BFASMC can ensure the prespecified convergence performance of the NWMR system output variables and strong robustness against uncertainties/disturbances.

Abstract:In this paper, a stochastic model predictive control (MPC) is proposed for the wheeled mobile robot to track a reference trajectory within a finite task horizon. The wheeled mobile robot is supposed to subject to additive stochastic disturbance with known probability distribution. It is also supposed that the mobile robot is subject to soft probability constraints on states and control inputs. The nonlinear mobile robot model is linearized and discretized into a discrete linear time-varying model, such that the linear time-varying MPC can be applied to forecast and control its future behavior. In the proposed stochastic MPC, the cost function is designed to penalize its tracking error and energy consumption. Based on quantile techniques, a learning-based approach is applied to transform the probability constraints to deterministic constraints, and to calculate the terminal constraint to guarantee recursive feasibility. It is proved that, with the proposed stochastic MPC, the tracking error of the closed-loop system is asymptotically average bounded. A simulation example is provided to support the theoretical result.

Superiority of model predictive control with robust and stable approach for sliding wheeled mobile systems in the presence of obstacles

Optimal Control Applications and Methods

Abstract:The paper presents two predictive control methods, RMPC and SMPC, for guiding mobile robots on slippery surfaces with obstacles. These linear controllers effectively maintain trajectory and avoid obstacles, with reduced computational complexity. RMPC excels on slippery terrains, whereas SMPC performs well on non‐slip surfaces. Both methods demonstrate superior speed and accuracy compared to similar controllers. SMPC notably reduces trajectory deviation from 0.5 m to less than 0.01 m within 8 s in non‐slip conditions, showcasing its rapid response and precision. In this paper, we present two distinct linear Model Predictive Control (MPC) methods for controlling mobile robots in the presence of obstacles while considering the wheel slip. Predictability of the controller enables the robot to automatically choose an alternative path to avoid obstacles. However, environmental conditions and disturbances, including slip, may impact the system model. Therefore, to accurately represent the system, slip angle and slip ratio are factored into the modeling process. Then the kinematic model is linearized using the successive method to reduce computational cost. Next, both Stable MPC (SMPC) and Robust MPC have been designed and implemented on the linearized time‐variant model to control the robot. The superiority of the robust predictive control method over the stable method has been discussed in terms of safety and optimal performance considering wheel slip. Finally, based on experimental tests, it has been found that the robust predictive controller is more effective than stable control when the surface is slippery and there is an obstacle in front of the robot. However, in a case where the wheel slip is neglectable, SMPC can be a better choice in presence of obstacles due to the lower computational cost.

MOBILE ROBOT TRAJECTORY TRACKING USING MODEL PREDICTIVE CONTROL

Abstract:This work focus on the application of model-based predictive control (MPC) to the trajectory tracking problem of nonholonomic wheeled mobile robots (WMR). The main motivation of the use of MPC in this case relies on its ability in considering, in a straightforward way, control a nd state constraints that naturally arise in practical proble ms. Furthermore, MPC techniques consider an explicit performance criterion to be minimized during the computation of the control law. The trajectory tracking problem is solved using two approaches: (1) nonlinear MPC and (2) linear MPC. Simulation results are provided in order to show the effectiveness of both schemes. Considerations regarding the computational effort of the MPC are developed with the purpose of analyzing the real-time implementation viability of the proposed techniques.

Abstract:According to the mechanical structure and operation principle of differential-drive two-wheeled robot, and aiming at the nonlinear systems with uncertainties variable structure, a trajectory tracking model based on sliding mode control (SMC) was designed by utilizing state vector to establish the model of system and controller. The simulating results show that robot can track line, circle and S shape trajectories well, which gave reasonable dynamic responses, adjustment performance, as well as perfect disturbance rejection. The system can eliminate errors according to the deviation from sliding surface by switching the structure of controller and is robust to external disturbance.

Abstract:AIM Recent studies have demonstrated that obesity is the common feature of cryptogenic cirrhosis (CC) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. However, there is little information on CC in the region where obesity is not prevalent. METHODS The clinical features, and the liver-related morbidity and mortality of CC were analyzed in Japan where the prevalence of obesity is low. Among 652 cirrhotic patients, we identified 29 patients (4.4%) with CC. Of these, 24 CC patients who were followed up for more than 6 months were compared in a case-control study with age-, sex-, and Child-Pugh score-matched controls having cirrhosis of viral etiology. RESULTS Obesity (BMI>or=25 kg/m(2)), diabetes mellitus, and hypertriglyceridemia were more frequent, and the visceral fat area was larger in the CC patients than in the controls. The indices of insulin resistance were higher and the serum aminotransferase levels were lower in the CC patients than in the controls. Logistic regression analysis identified the elevated hemoglobin A1c, BMI>or=25 kg/m(2), and normal aminotransferase levels as independent predictors of CC. Kaplan-Meier analysis demonstrated lower occurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma and higher survival rate in the CC than in the controls in contrast to the similar cumulative probability of liver-related morbidity between those groups. CONCLUSION CC more frequently presents with the clinical features suggestive of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis compared with controls even in the region where obesity is not prevalent. The lower occurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma and higher survival rate may indicate an indolent clinical course in CC as compared with viral cirrhosis.

Abstract:Considering system uncertainties (e.g., gear backlash, unmodeled dynamics, nonlinear friction and parameters perturbation) coupling disturbances weaken the motion performance of robotic systems, an observer-based finite-time prescribed performance sliding mode control with faster reaching law is proposed for robotic manipulators equipped with dual-motor joints (DMJs). In the case where the backlash information is completely unknown, the backlash is maximally eliminated using a simple but efficient dual-motor adaptive anti-backlash strategy. Thus, the design of position tracking controllers for DMJs can be simplified. Then, to deal with the influence of disturbances and residual uncertainties (excluding backlash), a novel finite-time adaptive sliding mode disturbance observer (ASMDO) is proposed to practically estimate the lumped uncertainties where their upper bounds are assumed to be unknown. Finally, a finite-time composite fast non-singular terminal sliding mode (TSM) controller, integrated with the prescribed performance principle, is proposed in this paper. To enhance the convergence rate, a novel TSM-type reaching law has been developed. The controller ensures that the tracking error is not only stabilized within a finite-time convergence rate but also adheres to a predefined maximum transient-steady-state error. The proposed scheme is implemented through simulation and experimental results, demonstrating its superior performance.

Abstract:This paper is to resolve the instability problem of trajectory tracking of four-wheel independently driven vehicles under high-speed conditions, an integrated control method of active front steering (AFS) and direct yaw moment (DYC) is designed. In the lower controller, the additional yaw moment is converted to the torque of four wheels considering the dynamic vertical load distribution of the vehicle. The simulation results demonstrate that the second-order sliding mode control (SOSMC) can effectively reduce the chattering problem caused by the traditional first-order sliding mode control (FOSMC), and the integrated control method improves the accuracy and stability of intelligent vehicle trajectory tracking.

Abstract:Although widely used in industrial applications, strong nonlinearity and coupling, high computational complexity prevent high precision tracking control of manipulator. In this paper, to overcome the rely on system model and achieve prescribed convergence, a novel hybrid observer‐based model‐free adaptive high‐order fast terminal sliding model control scheme (HO‐MHTSMC) with prescribed performance is proposed for trajectory tracking control of robot manipulators in the existence of friction and external disturbance. The ultra‐local model is used to approximate the original complex system in a model free form in a short sliding time window, which avoid the accurate modeling of the manipulator system. To compensate for the lumped uncertainties, a hybrid observer based on adaptive time‐delay estimation and adaptive second order sliding mode observer (SOSM) is proposed to achieve finite‐time observation and zero estimation error. Besides, a transformation using prescribed performance function is applied to the system to ensure the transient and steady‐state performance of the trajectory tracking in joint space. Furthermore, a high‐order fast terminal sliding mode control algorithm with backstepping control strategy is used to stabilize the whole system and reduce the chattering problem in conventional sliding mode control. The stability analysis of the system is provided by Lyapunov theorem. Finally, numerical study and co‐simulations show that the proposed control scheme has better performance in tracking accuracy and robustness compared with conventional control schemes.
