Abstract:Traffic state information, road network structure characteristics, and built environment characteristics are factors influencing traffic safety, which will alleviate or aggravate traffic safety problems. This paper analyzes the relationship between these factors and traffic accidents involving either property damage only (PDO) crashes or killed and severe injury (KSI) crashes. The spatiotemporal distribution of the two types of accidents was analyzed. Abundant explanatory variables were extracted from accident data, license plate recognition (LPR) data, OpenStreetMap (OSM) data, and point of interest (POI) data based on complex network methods and information entropy theories. Geographical and temporal weighted regression (GTWR), geographically weighted regression (GWR), and ordinary least squares (OLS) models were used to analyze the influencing factors of traffic safety, respectively. The results demonstrate that the GTWR model performs best in modeling spatiotemporal heterogeneity data. Traffic state information, road network structure, and built environment factors all have significant effects on traffic accidents, and traffic state information have the highest correlation with traffic accidents among all factors. The greater the traffic volume, the more likely are traffic accidents. The strongest correlation is between PDO crashes and traffic state in the morning peak, in the evening peak, and at night. For a road network divided into grids, the more important the intersections in the grid, the greater is the street circuity, and the more chaotic the street direction, the more likely PDO crashes are to occur in the grid. Furthermore, the diversity of land use is positively correlated with traffic accidents in urban areas, whereas the correlation is negative in suburban areas, which reflects the spatial heterogeneity.

Abstract:Abstract This study proposes a conflict-based traffic safety assessment method by associating conflict frequency and severity with short-term traffic characteristics. Instead of analysing historical crash data, this study employs microscopic trajectory data to quantify the relationship between conflict risk and traffic characteristics. The time-to-collision (TTC) index is used to detect conflicts, and a severity index (SI) is proposed on the basis of time-integrated TTC. With SI, the k-means algorithm is applied to classify the conflict severity level. Then the severity of regional conflict risk is split to three levels. Zero truncated Poisson regression and ordered logit regression methods are employed to estimate the effects of short-term traffic characteristics on conflict frequency and severity, respectively. Furthermore, the copula-based joint modelling method is applied to explore the potential non-linear dependency of conflict risk outcomes. A total of 18 copula models are tested to select the optimal ones. The HighD dataset from Germany is utilized to examine the proposed framework. Both between-lane and within-lane factors are considered. Results show that the correlations between traffic characteristics and conflict risk are significant, and the dependency of conflict outcomes varies among different severity levels. The difference of speed variation between lanes significantly influences the conflict frequency and severity simultaneously. Findings indicate that the proposed method is practicable to assess real-time traffic safety within a specific region by using short-term (30-second time interval) traffic characteristics. This study also contributes to develop targeted proactive safety strategies by evaluating road safety based on conflict risk, and considering different severity levels.

Analysis on congestion mechanism of CAVs around traffic accident zones

Abstract:Unexpected traffic accidents cause traffic congestion and aggravate the unsafe situation on the roadways. Reducing the impact of such congestion by introducing Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) into the traditional traffic flow is possible. It requires estimating the incident's duration and analyzing the incident's impact area to determine the appropriate strategy. To guide the driver in making efficient and accurate judgments and avoiding secondary traffic congestion, the Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) model with dynamic safety distance and the Intelligent Driver Model (IDM) based on the safety potential field theory are introduced to build the evolution model of accidental traffic congestion under diversion interference and non-interference. The Huatao Interchange section of the Inner Ring Highway in the Banan District of Chongqing, China, was selected as the test section for simulating mixed traffic flow under different CAVs permeability (Pc). The relationship between the evacuation time, evacuation traffic volume, and the accident impact degree index (including the farthest queue length and accident duration) under the diversion intervention scenario was analyzed, respectively. The results of the study indicate that the higher the penetration of CAVs, the more significant the improvement in traffic flow occupancy, flow, and speed. Diversion interventions reduce congestion, about 50 % of the duration without interventions, when Pc ≤ 80 %. The traffic volume of diversion interference is non-linearly positively correlated with the maximum queue length, and the earlier the interference time, the stronger the positive correlation. The negative correlation between the interference time and queue length is weak at low evacuation traffic volume. With the increase in evacuation traffic volume, the influence of evacuation time on queue length becomes stronger. The maximum queue length value interval under different conditions is [348 m, 3140 m], and the shortest evacuation time is [1649 s, 2834 s]. The traffic flow data obtained from the simulation are imported into the episodic traffic congestion evolution model. The congestion evaluation indexes are calculated under non-interference and interference measures and compared with the simulation results. The maximum relative error is within 5.38 %. The results can be of great significance in relieving congestion caused by traffic accidents and promptly restoring road capacity.

Abstract:This study sets out to investigate the effects of traffic composition on freeway crash frequency by injury severity. A crash dataset collected from Kaiyang Freeway, China, is adopted for the empirical analysis, where vehicles are divided into five categories and crashes are classified into no injury and injury levels. In consideration of correlated spatial effects between adjacent segments, a Bayesian multivariate conditional autoregressive model is proposed to link no-injury and injury crash frequencies to the risk factors, including the percentages of different vehicle categories, daily vehicle kilometers traveled (DVKT), and roadway geometry. The model estimation results show that, compared to Category 5 vehicles (e.g., heavy truck), larger percentages of Categories 1 (e.g., passenger car) and 3 (e.g., medium truck) vehicles would lead to less no-injury crashes and more injury crashes. DVKT, horizontal curvature, and vertical grade are also found to be associated with no-injury and/or injury crash frequencies. The significant heterogeneous and spatial effects for no-injury and injury crashes justify the applicability of the proposed model. The findings are helpful to understand the relationship between traffic composition and freeway safety and to provide suggestions for designing strategies of vehicle safety improvement.
A Dynamic Bayesian Network Model for Real-Time Risk Propagation of Secondary Rear-End Collision Accident Using Driving Risk Field

Abstract:In order to take more active measures to prevent and control secondary accidents, it is necessary to describe risk propagation process after the accident. To this end, this paper deeply analyzed the risk propagation mechanism between vehicles and proposed a novel secondary rear-end collision accident risk propagation model, which could real-time evaluate vehicle rear-end collision risk. The research scene of the paper is a single-lane road rear-end collision scene, so a driving risk field model suitable for this scene is first established. Based on this, the vehicle operation interaction risk field force is calculated. Then, the risk field force is converted into risk probability through the hyperbolic tangent function, and the vehicle operation interaction risk model is obtained. In addition, a risk propagation framework based on dynamic Bayesian network is constructed to describe the propagation process of rear-end collision risk from the accident vehicle to following vehicles. Finally, according to the probabilistic reasoning process of the framework, combined with the accident vehicle risk, a secondary rear-end collision accident risk propagation model is established. Simulation experiments show that the paper model can describe the evolution trend of rear-end risk and the risk assessment results are more accurate. And after the accident, the rear-end collision risk propagation speed will increase with the increase of traffic flow, and the number of secondary rear-end vehicles will also increase with the increase of traffic speed. These conclusions are of great significance in formulating vehicle anti-collision strategies and deploying risk management and control facilities.

Abstract:Expressway traffic accidents often result in severe congestion, with their unpredictable nature complicating timely and effective response measures. This paper presents a comprehensive method for accurately estimating and analyzing the spatiotemporal delay effects of expressway accidents through the integration of multi-source geographic data. The innovation lies in utilizing real-world vehicle trajectory data, combined with a Traffic Performance Index (TPI), to quantitatively assess delay impacts. By applying spatial clustering and hotspot detection techniques, we investigate the distribution patterns of delays and further employ a Spatial Error Model (SEM) to examine the relationships between accident characteristics and associated delay effects. Using expressway accident data and vehicle trajectory records from Hunan Province, the results demonstrate that the TPI-based approach effectively captures the duration, extent, and severity of traffic delays. Moreover, significant correlations are identified between delay impacts and specific accident characteristics, such as accident type, road type, road environment, pre-accident vehicle speed, and secondary accidents. This approach provides traffic management authorities with actionable insights into the overall roadway impact, facilitating targeted emergency response strategies and informing road usage policies tailored to the characteristics of accident impacts, thus helping to mitigate future risks.

Abstract:The real-time conflict prediction model using traffic flow characteristics is much less studied than the crash-based model. This study aims at exploring the relationship between conflicts and traffic flow features with the consideration of heterogeneity and developing predictive models to identify conflict-prone conditions in a real-time manner. The high-resolution trajectory data from the HighD dataset is used as empirical data. A novel method with the virtual detector approach for traffic feature extraction and a two-step framework is proposed for the trajectory data analysis. The framework consists of an exploratory study by random parameter logit model with heterogeneity in means and variances and a comparative study on several machine learning methods, including eXtreme Gradient Boosting (Boosting), Random Forest (Bagging), Support Vector Machine (Single-classifier), and Multilayer-Perceptron (Deep neural network). Results indicate that (1) traffic flow characteristics have significant impacts on the probability of conflict occurrence; (2) the statistical model considering mean heterogeneity outperforms the counterpart and lane differences variables are found to significantly impact the means of random parameters for both lane variables and lane differences variables; (3) eXtreme Gradient Boosting trained on an under-sampled dataset turns out to be the best model with the highest AUC of 0.871 and precision of 0.867, showing that re-sampling techniques can significantly improve the model performance. The proposed model is found to be sensitive to the conflict threshold. Sensitivity analysis on feature selection further confirms that the conflict risk prediction should consider both subject lane features and lane difference features, which verifies the consistency with exploratory analysis based on the statistical model. The consistency between statistical models and machine learning methods improves the interpretability of results for the latter one.

Analysis of the Different Duration Stages of Accidents with Hazard-Based Model

Abstract:This study investigates and identifies significant contributing variables that affect the duration of three traffic accident stages, namely, preparation, travel, and clearance as well as the total duration of the accident. Accelerated failure time (AFT) hazard-based models were developed with different underlying probability distributions for the hazard function, including models with gamma heterogeneity and models with time-varying covariates. The results indicate that the gamma distribution model with a time variable is the best model for the four different duration stages, and different parameters and variables were appropriate for modeling the different duration stages of traffic accidents. The findings of this study provide an important demonstration of method and an empirical basis for accident management programs.

Abstract:SummaryDifferent clearance methods in traffic accident management lead to varied duration distributions. Apart from investigating the influence of various factors associated with accidents on the duration of such accidents using different clearance methods, this study also examines the cumulative incidence probability. We used traffic accident data obtained for 12 months from the Fourth Ring Expressway main line in Beijing to develop a subdistribution hazard regression model, which can assess the risk factors of two clearance methods. The regression results show that the different factors have statistically significant effects on the duration of two accident groups with different clearance methods; furthermore, opposite effects occur even for some factors that have a strong effect on both accident groups. For example, an accident involving a taxi extends the duration time with clearance method 1; in comparison, the accident is shorter with clearance method 2. The predicted cumulative incidence curves of the two types of clearance methods are shown as examples, with stratification based on the influence factors (taxi involved, season). Finally, the Gray test of the cumulative incidence functions and the log‐rank test of the Kaplan–Meier estimates of the survival functions are compared, in order to demonstrate the importance of using proper methods for analyses. Jointly analyzing freeway primary and secondary crash severity using a copula-based approach

Abstract:A copula-based model is developed in this study to jointly model the severity of freeway primary crashes and secondary crashes. The copula-based model can concurrently account for the severity levels in the crash and the correlation among primary-secondary crash pairs' severity. The model comprehensively considers a series of explanation variables, including temporal characteristics, crash characteristics, roadway characteristics and real-traffic conditions, and is estimated using traffic crash data from 2016 through 2019 for Los Angeles County, California. The proposed copula model is then contrasted with the traditional binary probit model and the results show a remarkable advantage of the copula model, which is evidenced by better fitting performance. It is found that weather, whether towed away, unsafe speed, collision type, road condition, terrain, road weaving and truck involvement have significant impact on primary crash severity propensity and collision type, road width, road condition, traffic volume and vehicle speed have significant impact on secondary crash severity propensity. In light of the findings, a number of countermeasures are proposed to mitigate freeway crashes, including emergency services, vehicle and roadway engineering, traffic law enforcement and driver education.
Development of a variable speed limit strategy to reduce secondary collision risks during inclement weathers

Abstract:Inclement weather reduces traveler's sight distance and increases vehicle's stopping distance. Once a collision occurred during inclement weather and resulted in a slow traffic, approaching vehicles may not have adequate time to make emergency responses to the hazardous traffic, resulting in increased potentials of secondary collisions. The primary objective of this study is to develop a control strategy of variable speed limits (VSL) to reduce the risks of secondary collisions during inclement weathers. By analyzing the occurrence condition of secondary collision, the VSL strategy is proposed to dynamically adjust the speed limits according to the current traffic and weather conditions. A car-following model is modified to simulate the vehicle maneuvers with the VSL control. Two surrogate safety measures, based on the time-to-collision notion, are used to evaluate the control effects of VSL. Five weather scenarios are evaluated in simulation. The results show that the VSL strategy effectively reduces the risks of secondary collisions in various weather types. The time exposed time-to-collision (TET) is reduced by 41.45%-50.74%, and the time integrated time-to-collision (TIT) is reduced by 38.19%-41.19%. The safety effects are compared to those with a previous VSL strategy. The results show that in most cases our strategy outperforms the previous one. We also evaluate how driver's compliance to speed limit affects the effectiveness of VSL control.

Abstract:Transportation Research Record, Ahead of Print. The time and location of occurrence, among other characteristics of incidents, are needed to distribute traveler information and dispatch emergency service for traffic congestion and safety mitigation purposes. However, the corresponding clearance/recovery time is an important, yet under-studied, subject of research. Existing studies on incident duration modeling mainly utilize duration data gathered and provided by authorities through the efforts of individual agents. This type of manual data gathering may suffer coverage and consistency issues. In addition, the explanatory variables considered in these studies are static, that is, observed at the incident formation stage and assumed to be consistent over the incident periods. This setup, however, overlooks traffic flow dynamics; time-varying traffic variables during the incident episodes affect incidents clearance and disruption characteristics. In line with the above limitations, the objective of this study is to utilize hazard-based modeling to explain incident durations mined from traffic detector data while factoring in traffic flow dynamics. The 2014–2016 Virginia statewide traffic detector data were utilized to extract incident durations by implementing a machine-learning-based incident detection algorithm followed by a semi-parametric proportional hazard function. Such a function accounts for the time-varying traffic-descriptive covariates for incident duration modeling. The resulting monotonically decreasing baseline hazard reveals the snowball effect and the inertia effect of disruptions induced by incidents, which leads to the advice that incidents should be detected and mitigated within a 30 min duration. The normalized flow, density, and speed measures, and their temporal differences are all shown to be significant covariates scaling up or down the hazard.
Optimizing Highway Ramp Merge Safety and Efficiency via Spatio-Temporal Cooperative Control and Vehicle-Road Coordination

Abstract:In view of existing automatic driving, it is difficult to accurately and timely obtain the status and driving intention of other vehicles. The safety risk and urgency of autonomous vehicles in the absence of collision are evaluated. To ensure safety and improve road efficiency, a method of pre-compiling the spatio-temporal trajectory of vehicles is established to eliminate conflicts between vehicles in advance. The calculation method of the safe distance under spatio-temporal conditions is studied, considering vehicle speed differences, vehicle positioning errors, and clock errors. By combining collision acceleration and urgent acceleration, an evaluation model for vehicle conflict risk is constructed. Mainline vehicles that may have conflicts with on-ramp vehicles are identified, and the target gap for on-ramp vehicles is determined. Finally, a cooperative control method is established based on the selected target gap, preparing the vehicle travel path in advance. Taking highway ramp merge as an example, the mainline priority spatio-temporal cooperative control method is proposed and verified through simulation. Investigating Spatial Autocorrelation and Spillover Effects in Freeway Crash-Frequency Data

Abstract:This study attempts to investigate spatial autocorrelation and spillover effects in micro traffic safety analysis. To achieve the objective, a Poisson-based count regression with consideration of these spatial effects is proposed for modeling crash frequency on freeway segments. In the proposed hybrid model, the spatial autocorrelation and the spillover effects are formulated as the conditional autoregressive (CAR) prior and the exogenous variables of adjacent segments, respectively. The proposed model is demonstrated and compared to the models with only one kind of spatial effect, using one-year crash data collected from Kaiyang Freeway, China. The results of Bayesian estimation conducted in WinBUGS show that significant spatial autocorrelation and spillover effects simultaneously exist in the freeway crash-frequency data. The lower value of deviance information criterion (DIC) and more significant exogenous variables for the hybrid model compared to the other alternatives, indicate the strength of accounting for both spatial autocorrelation and spillover effects on improving model fit and identifying crash contributing factors. Moreover, the model results highlight the importance of daily vehicle kilometers traveled, and horizontal and vertical alignments of targeted segments and adjacent segments on freeway crash occurrences.
Traffic safety analysis of inter-tunnel weaving section with conflict prediction models

Abstract:With increasing traffic demand in urban areas of metropolises, many tunnels have been constructed to improve road capacity and traffic mobility. The distance between two consecutive tunnels is relatively short which usually forms a weaving section, leading to considerable traffic conflicts. The objective of this study is to evaluate the safety performance of such inter-tunnel sections. Conflict prediction models based on negative binomial regression were developed to identify influential factors. Field data were collected at ten selected sites in Nanjing, China, and used for calibrating and validating the proposed models. Two types of inter-tunnel weaving sections (type 1 and type 2) were found in the field with distinct lane markings and operation rules. The unique lane markings in type 1 weaving sections are designed to isolate weaving traffic flows and thus reduce conflicts, but in practice, contradictory to its design intention, lead to more traffic conflicts compared with type 2 weaving sections. In addition, the length of the diverging section, merging section, and whole weaving section are found to be significant influencing factors on the conflict occurrence. The findings in the present study are expected to help engineer better design inter-tunnel sections.

Abstract:Assessing and prioritizing the duration time and effects of traffic incidents on major roads present significant challenges for road network managers. This study examines the effect of numerous factors associated with various types of incidents on their duration and proposes an incident duration prediction model. Several parametric accelerated failure time hazard-based models were examined, including Weibull, log-logistic, log-normal, and generalized gamma, as well as all models with gamma heterogeneity and flexible parametric hazard-based models with freedom ranging from one to ten, by analyzing a traffic incident dataset obtained from the Incident Reporting and Dispatching System in Beijing in 2008. Results show that different factors significantly affect different incident time phases, whose best distributions were diverse. Given the best hazard-based models of each incident time phase, the prediction result can be reasonable for most incidents. The results of this study can aid traffic incident management agencies not only in implementing strategies that would reduce incident duration, and thus reduce congestion, secondary incidents, and the associated human and economic losses, but also in effectively predicting incident duration time.

Abstract:Predicting conflict risk from a microscopic perspective is crucial for understanding traffic dynamics and preventing crashes. However, previous studies often missed this perspective and lacked methods for applying it in spatial contexts. This study introduces a method that predicts conflict risk using both spatial and temporal segments, using real-time data for practical implications. Employing a hybrid model that combines long short-term memory (LSTM) and a convolutional neural network (CNN), the research utilizes three hours of vehicle trajectory data from the Shanghai Inner Ring Expressway. Specifically, a 10 s data window is employed to forecast conflict risk within the subsequent 3 s, 4 s, and 5 s intervals, considering a 10 m spatial section. Modified time to collision ( MTTC L ) is adopted to assess conflicts between vehicles. The study incorporates 12 factors to predict conflict risk, prioritizing them based on SHAP values. The results highlight that most conflicts occur within the 3 s prediction horizon, with prediction accuracy decreasing as the forecast horizon extends. Notably, the study identifies key contributing factors, including the speed difference between vehicles, the number of lane changes, inter-vehicle distance, distance variability, and the number of cars. Spatially, the research identifies entry and exit ramps and their surrounding areas on the expressway as hotspots for sideswipe conflicts.

Abstract:Abstract Given the potential difference in drivers’ route familiarity, this study aims to investigate the respective factors contributing to local-vehicle and non-local-vehicle crashes on freeway. Crash data from Kaiyang Freeway in Guangdong Province, China in 2014 are collected for the investigation, where the crashes with all involved vehicles registered in the province are labeled as local-vehicle crashes while others are labeled as non-local-vehicle crashes. Bayesian spatial models are developed to build local-vehicle and non-local-vehicle crash frequencies’ relationships with traffic characteristics, roadway design, and weather condition. The parameter estimation results indicate that the factors including daily vehicle kilometers traveled, vertical grade, air temperature, and precipitation, impact local-vehicle and non-local-vehicle crash frequencies in the same directions. The proportion of vehicles in Class 1 (e.g., passenger car) impacts the two type crash frequencies in different directions. The proportion of vehicles in Class 3 (e.g., medium-sized bus and truck) and horizontal curvature have significant effects on local-vehicle crashes only. The results are indicative of developing countermeasures from the perspectives of roadway geometry design and driving assistance apps, which aims to reduce freeway crash occurrence.
Evaluating the performance of traffic conflict measures in real-time crash risk prediction using pre-crash vehicle trajectories

Abstract:The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of traffic conflict measures for real-time crash risk prediction. Drone recordings were collected from a freeway section in Nanjing, China, over a year. Twenty rear-end crashes and their associated trajectories were obtained. Vehicle trajectories preceding the crash were segmented based on different time periods to represent varying crash conditions. The Extreme Value Theory (EVT) approach combined with a block maxima sampling method was then employed to investigate the generalized extreme value (GEV) distributions of extremely risky events under non-crash and crash conditions. The prediction performance was demonstrated by the differences in GEV distributions under these two conditions. Within the proposed modeling framework, the performances of Time-to-Collision (TTC), Deceleration Rate to Avoid a Crash (DRAC), and Absolute value of Derivative of Instantaneous Acceleration (ADIA) were examined and compared. The results revealed a decreasing trend in the prediction performances as the preceding time window before a crash increased. For any given length of crash conditions, TTC consistently outperformed DRAC and ADIA. Notably, TTC's reliability in crash risk prediction became more uncertain when forecasting crashes more than 2 s in advance. This study provided the optimal thresholds for TTC and ADIA for practical application in crash early warning. The methods and results in this study have the potential to be used for crash risk assessments in autonomous vehicles.
A Study of the Influencing Factors on the Duration of Traffic Incidents

Abstract:With the rapid development of urban transportation, the number of traffic incidents has increased year by year. Traffic incidents not only cause severe damage to the lives and properties of travelers but also become a great challenge to traffic operation and management. Notably, the duration of traffic incidents is an important indicator to measure the impact of incidents. Many previous studies have focused on the duration of traffic incidents on the freeway rather than the urban roads. Moreover, the time range and research area are often limited. In our study, we use the traffic incident data of Tianjin, China, in two consecutive years. We utilize two regression models and two tree-based models to analyze and predict the duration of traffic incidents. The results show that the overall prediction accuracy of the log-linear regression model is higher than the other three approaches. Meanwhile, factors like “whether in the urban area”, “road type”, “incident type”, and “number of people involved” have a significant influence on the duration.
