Benefits of Art Therapy in People Diagnosed With Personality Disorders: A Quantitative Survey

Abstract:Art therapy is widely used and effective in the treatment of patients diagnosed with Personality Disorders (PDs). Current psychotherapeutic approaches may benefit from this additional therapy to improve their efficacy. But what is the patient perspective upon this therapy? This study explored perceived benefits of art therapy for patients with PDs to let the valuable perspective of patients be taken into account. Using a quantitative survey study over 3 months (<i>N</i> = 528), GLM repeated measures and overall hierarchical regression analyses showed that the majority of the patients reported quite a lot of benefit from art therapy (mean 3.70 on a 5-point Likert scale), primarily in emotional and social functioning. The improvements are concentrated in specific target goals of which the five highest scoring goals affected were: expression of emotions, improved (more stable/positive) self-image, making own choices/autonomy, recognition of, insight in, and changing of personal patterns of feelings, behaviors and thoughts and dealing with own limitations and/or vulnerability. Patients made it clear that they perceived these target areas as having been affected by art therapy and said so at both moments in time, with a higher score after 3 months. The extent of the perceived benefits is highly dependent for patients on factors such as a non-judgmental attitude on the part of the therapist, feeling that they are taken seriously, being given sufficient freedom of expression but at the same time being offered sufficient structure and an adequate basis. Age, gender, and diagnosis cluster did not predict the magnitude of perceived benefits. Art therapy provides equal advantages to a broad target group, and so this form of therapy can be broadly indicated. The experienced benefits and the increase over time was primarily associated with the degree to which patients perceive that they can give meaningful expression to feelings in their artwork. This provides an indication for the extent of the benefits a person can experience and can also serve as a clear guiding principle for interventions by the art therapist.

Abstract:Arts and psychomotor therapies are often part of the multidisciplinary treatment for people diagnosed with Personality Disorders (PDs). Drama therapy is aimed at promoting emotion regulation and strengthening of interpersonal skills. The added value of drama therapy has not been sufficiently examined and available studies only provide indirect client reports. Hence, we focus on what people with PDs perceive as effects of drama therapy. This qualitative study followed the Grounded Theory Approach utilising indepth, semi-structured interviews in a natural drama therapy context. Interviews were held with 19 people diagnosed with PDs, who were purposefully sampled. They were recruited from five treatment centres, with five drama therapists involved. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using a three-step approach: open, axial, and selective coding. Open coding resulted in 93 codes. In the coding process, four overarching themes came to the fore: allowing playfulness and its inherent benefits, connecting the inner and outer emotional world, understanding of maladaptive coping styles, and intrapersonal and interpersonal behavior change. The perceived effects as reported by people diagnosed with PDs provide information about what drama therapy means to them, in their daily lives and which aspects of the treatment were most valuable to them. This study contributes to the necessary underpinning of drama therapy.

Abstract:People with personality disorders (PDs) are often difficult to reach emotionally in therapy. As music therapy (MT) provides an entry point to emotions and facilitates contact and communication, it is regularly used with this target group. This study presents a case study of a 40‐year‐old woman diagnosed with a PD not otherwise defined. "Nina" experienced depressive and physical symptoms, including severe anxiety. Previous treatments had failed. In MT, she experienced a sense of safety. Over the course of the treatment, she experimented with making herself heard, learned to listen to herself and recognize her own physical signals, permitted closeness and cooperation, and began setting boundaries and taking initiative. She got in touch with and learned to regulate emotions such as sadness and fear. Self‐criticism gave way to a more compassionate self. Nina began to experience positive feelings and showed progress in her work and social interactions. The findings suggest that MT can directly connect to clients' emotions, behaviors, and thoughts in a way they perceive as safe. This is of the utmost importance for clients who are hard to reach. The use of MT can potentially prevent dropout and further entrapment in personality problems.

Abstract:Polyvagal theory advocates for working with the body, becoming aware of the body and connecting with the senses. Similarly, paying attention to and influencing one's physical and sensory experience is a core aspect of the creative arts and psychomotor therapies. Polyvagal theory offers opportunities for strengthening resilience by treating emotion-regulation problems, stress, and trauma, as well as restoring regulation of the autonomic nervous system. Paying attention to and influencing physical and sensory experiences are core aspects of creative arts and psychomotor therapies. This theoretical paper explores how polyvagal theory can serve as a foundational theory and support the creative arts and psychomotor therapies for emotion regulation in stress and trauma. A number of pillars in polyvagal theory have links with arts therapies, such as an emphasis on physical and sensory experience in situations of safety or threat. This theory may offer insight into the role of the body in stressful situations, the role of co-and self-regulation, and thus the functioning of and the rationale for use of creative arts and psychomotor therapies. Through interventions focused on promoting healthy autonomic responses and regulating physiological responses, clients can learn to better regulate and process their emotional experiences. Although this could be broadly useful, it would seem particularly promising in therapies focused on stress and trauma. This article provides an introduction to polyvagal theory and outlines how it can serve as an explanatory, hypothetical model for the working mechanisms that underlie creative arts and psychomotor therapies. The application of PVT in creative arts and psychomotor therapies will be explored by describing techniques for "noticing and naming" and "learning to change," as well as by highlighting the role of PVT in the therapeutic relationship. It provides case examples and discusses the role of creative arts and psychomotor therapies for stress regulation and resilience conceptualized in line with the polyvagal theory.

Abstract:Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic and complex neurodegenerative disorder. Conventional pharmacological or surgical therapies alone are often insufficient at adequately alleviating disability. Moreover, there is an increasing shift toward person-centered care, emphasizing the concept of "living well". In this context, arts-based interventions offer great promise, functioning as platforms for creative expression that could provide novel mechanisms to promote quality of life. Here we present a qualitative review of arts-based interventions for PD, including music, dance, drama, visual arts, and creative writing. For each, we discuss their applications to PD, proposed mechanisms, evidence from prior studies, and upcoming research. We also provide examples of community-based projects. Studies to date have had relatively small sample sizes, but their findings suggest that arts-based interventions have the potential to reduce motor and non-motor symptoms. They may also empower people with PD and thereby address issues of self-esteem, foster personal problem-solving, and augment holistic well-being. However, there is a paucity of research determining optimal dosage and symptom-specific benefits of these therapies. If art were a drug, we would have to perform appropriately powered studies to provide these data before incorporating it into routine patient care. We therefore call for further research with properly designed studies to offer more rigorous and evidence-based support for what we intuitively think is a highly promising approach to support individuals living with PD. Given the possible positive impact on people's lives, arts-based approaches merit further development and, if proven to be effective, systematic inclusion within integrated management plans.

Abstract:Background and purpose: Parkinson's disease (PD) causes a decline in motor function, cognitive decline, and impacts the mental health of patients. Due to the high cost and side effects of conventional treatments, the medical community has begun to explore safer and more cost-effective alternative therapies. In this context, arts therapies have gained increasing attention as innovative treatments. This review plans to explore the role and potential of various arts therapies in the rehabilitation of PD patients by analyzing existing literature and case studies. Methods: This review comprehensively searched the literature in several databases, including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure, to assess the effectiveness of different arts therapies in the rehabilitation of patients with PD. Results: From 3440 articles screened, 16 met the inclusion criteria. These studies included a variety of therapies, including music, meditation, yoga, art, dance, theatre, video games and play therapy. These different types of arts therapies had a positive impact on the motor, psychological and cognitive rehabilitation of PD patients, respectively. Conclusion: The existing literature highlights the great potential of arts therapies in the rehabilitation of people with PD, further confirming the efficacy of arts therapies in enhancing the motor, psychological and cognitive rehabilitation process of people with PD. In addition, this review identifies research gaps in the use of color therapy in PD rehabilitation and highlights the need for further exploration of various arts therapies modalities.

Abstract:Objective: To explore the potential rehabilitative effect of art therapy and its underlying mechanisms in Parkinson's disease (PD). Methods: Observational study of eighteen patients with PD, followed in a prospective, open-label, exploratory trial. Before and after twenty sessions of art therapy, PD patients were assessed with the UPDRS, Pegboard Test, Timed Up and Go Test (TUG), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Modified Fatigue Impact Scale and PROMIS-Self-Efficacy, Montreal Cognitive Assessment, Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test (RCFT), Benton Visual Recognition Test (BVRT), Navon Test, Visual Search, and Stop Signal Task. Eye movements were recorded during the BVRT. Resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) was also performed to assess functional connectivity (FC) changes within the dorsal attention (DAN), executive control (ECN), fronto-occipital (FOC), salience (SAL), primary and secondary visual (V1, V2) brain networks. We also tested fourteen age-matched healthy controls at baseline. Results: At baseline, PD patients showed abnormal visual-cognitive functions and eye movements. Analyses of rs-fMRI showed increased functional connectivity within DAN and ECN in patients compared to controls. Following art therapy, performance improved on Navon test, eye tracking, and UPDRS scores. Rs-fMRI analysis revealed significantly increased FC levels in brain regions within V1 and V2 networks. Interpretation: Art therapy improves overall visual-cognitive skills and visual exploration strategies as well as general motor function in patients with PD. The changes in brain connectivity highlight a functional reorganization of visual networks.

Abstract:Understanding and processing life experiences are essential in the treatment of personality disorders to promote personal recovery and psychological wellbeing. In this qualitative case report, drafted in co‐creation between the client, clinical psychologist, and art therapist, individual treatment consisted of two psychotherapeutic interventions, "An Empowering Story" and life‐story‐focused art therapy, in 12 parallel sessions for 24 weeks. Hilda, 68 years of age, had been diagnosed with an unspecified personality disorder and various traits of borderline personality disorder. She experienced emotional exhaustion following long‐term mental health problems rooted in a traumatic early childhood. This affected her ability to manage her emotions and social relations, resulting in the sense that her life had no meaning. Hilda was invited to reconstruct her life experiences, divided into the past, turning point, and present/future, in a written and a painted life story. This allowed for the integration of traumatic as well as positive memories, enhanced self‐compassion, and meaning making. She developed self‐reflection and integration of internal conflicts leading to a better emotional balance and self‐understanding. Art therapy emphasizes bottom‐up regulatory processes, while narrative psychology supports top‐down regulatory processes. The combined approach effectively integrated bottom‐up, experiential, sensory experiences with top‐down, cognitive emotion‐regulation processes. The results suggest that psychotherapeutic interventions involving a multi‐pronged, complementary, and thus more holistic approach can support personal recovery in personality disorders.

Abstract:Structured Trauma can impact an individual's ability to process memories, develop a healthy identity, express emotions, maintain focus, navigate relationships, and achieve goals. Despite the potential negative impacts of trauma, specific psychotherapeutic interventions and trauma-informed care provide opportunities for recovery and healing. Creative processes can promote trauma recovery. The literature suggests that creativity can support people in non-verbally processing memories, containing internal chaos, and restoring hope. Case examples highlight the approaches of an art therapist, social worker, and psychiatrist who introduced arts-based interventions to traumatized clients. The art therapist explores use of an ancient Japanese approach to repairing pottery with a 23-year-old who experienced sexual abuse and neglect. The social worker discusses how Janusian thinking and "creative destruction" inspired collage-making with a 15-year-old who witnessed domestic violence and experienced depressive symptoms. The psychiatrist considers how traumatic memory processing theory informed her structured drawing approach to traumatic grief work with an aggressive 10-year-old. Use of arts-based interventions assisted in overcoming client resistance to "talk therapy" approaches, offering a non-verbal, expressive alternative and supporting client progress toward treatment goals. Reflection on three case vignette led to several practice implications: (1) Professionals should use creative approaches carefully and responsibly, operating within their scope of practice, (2) Professionals should consider how arts-based interventions can strengthen trauma treatment, & (3) Increased provider collaboration and cross-disciplinary dialogue can enhance trauma informed care. More research on the effectiveness of creative approaches in trauma treatment is needed.

Abstract:Introduction: Mental health care provided to offenders with psychiatric problems in forensic settings mainly consists of verbal oriented treatments. In addition, experience-based therapies are used such as (creative) arts therapies: (visual) art therapy, music therapy, drama therapy and dance (movement) therapy. There are indications for effectiveness of arts therapies, but a systematic overview of effect studies of all arts therapies in forensic care is lacking. Methods: First, we performed a systematic review. Second, Thematic Analysis was used to synthesize the qualitative narrative results and define the hypothesized mechanisms of change. Third, we performed a meta-analysis to investigate the effects of arts therapies in reducing psychosocial problems of offenders. Twenty-three studies were included in the review. Quality and risk of bias was assessed using EPHPP (Effective Public Health Practice Project). Results: The included studies were heterogeneous in type of outcome measures and intervention characteristics. Synthesis of mechanisms of change involved in the methodical use of the arts in arts therapies resulted in a description of regulatory processes which are stimulated in arts therapies: perceptive awareness (interoceptive and exteroceptive), the regulation of emotions, stress, impulses, cognitions, social regulation, and self-expression. These processes play a role in developing prevention, coping and self-management skills. Eighteen studies were included in the meta-analyses (11 RCTs/CCTs; 7 pre-post studies). The meta-analyses indicated significant effects on both risk factors (psychiatric symptoms and addiction) and protective factors for criminal behavior (social functioning and psychological functioning). Effects on criminal and/or antisocial behavior were not significant, but this outcome measure was scarcely used among the studies. Discussion: The analyses in this study should be considered explorative. More research is needed to gain more solid conclusions about effectiveness and mechanisms of change of arts therapies in forensic institutions. However, the results of this first systematic review, synthesis of mechanisms and meta-analysis in this field are promising and show effects of arts therapies on risk and protective factors in individuals in forensic institutions. Implementing a whole‐of‐service stepped care approach to personality disorder treatment: Impact of training and service redesign on clinician attitudes and skills

Abstract:Personality disorders are a highly prevalent mental health condition. Historically, clinician attitudes have been negative, and only a small number have specialised training. This study evaluated clinician attitudes and confidence in working with people with personality disorder following the combination of training and implementation of a stepped care whole‐of‐service approach. A total of 102 multidisciplinary mental health clinicians were trained to implement the stepped care approach, and completed surveys prior to implementation and at 12 months follow up. Clinicians delivered manualised structured psychological therapy as part of the model. Measures assessed changes in attitudes and confidence, and impact of the service changes and therapy approach. Qualitative responses elucidated core themes. Evaluation at 12 months post training and service redesign showed improvements in clinician skills, confidence, theoretical knowledge and attitudes. Qualitative thematic analysis found core themes of improved understanding, clinical skills and improvements in the accessibility and timeliness of treatment. Implementing a whole‐of‐service model featuring stepped care therapies enhanced clinician attitudes, confidence, skills and knowledge in working with people with personality disorders. Clinicians identified that the whole‐of‐service model also improved accessibility to treatment, and quality of clinical care to the consumer and their carers.

Abstract:Introduction Art therapy, occupational and play therapy support the idea that man becomes what he is through activity. We accept man in his totality, we oppose the rigid boundaries between "sick" and "healthy", there is no contradiction between these states, but only an unbroken chain of neighboring nuances, of gradual differences of human life. Objectives Therapies based on the visual arts are also used in the discharge of repressed experiences, called in psychoanalytic terms "catharsis", with the aim of preventing or remedying dysfunctions, facilitating maximum adaptability of the beneficiary, regardless of the degree of handicap. The activities of occupational therapy and ergotherapy has and productive objectives, in accordance with the outstanding, hidden skills, correlated with the current demands on the labor market. Art forms called: "Raw Art" can be practiced. Methods Traditional crafts and visual arts are reinvented as therapeutic methods. We use pottery and sculptural artistic ceramics with elements from the history of archaic arts connected with contemporary visual arts (pictures, sculpture, graphics, mixed arts and multimedia) Results The creative process and symbolic communication, associated with narration and imitation, develop new ways of communication, new ways of self-expression, new ways of seeing things. Abstract:Introduction The new type of postmodern art can be interpreted from the point of view of self expression polarized between: art - art-therapy, ludic, occupational therapy - religion. The computer becomes the new medium after the impact of television, and by integrating computers into the network, their communication function has become more prevalent than that of data processing. Contemporary visual arts bring together, in different degrees of relationship and fusion, fields of art that until now were understood and practiced more individually. Multimedia and mixed media technology, which has evolved into meaningful visual representations, incorporates the science behind human perception and knowledge. Objectives The purpose of art in art-therapy, in this context, is not an exercise of the already acquired knowledge upon the artistic material, but a discovery of the yet unknown. Art-based therapies, as nondirective methods, attempt to visualize past traumatic experiences and harmonize the individual with himself and with others. Methods In the preventive activities, we include all activities involving nonverbal communication and holistic engagement of people in creative activities, specific to visual arts (plastic, decorative design, and multimedia)."Beneficiaries can create their own images with which they want to interact, to arrange their environment...We experiment with art-specific ways to make interdisciplinary exchanges and cultural interferences using the universal language of visual arts along with intercultural elements and religious ecumenism" . The child expresses various issues related to his feelings, like the search of his identity, the generated anxieties, the family and professional environment, the situations of neglect and abuse. For the same purpose, as a complement to activities in nature camps, where education/art therapy takes place in the artist's studio, special care must be taken to create an evocative and stimulating work environment. Results We detect hidden capacities through the specific means of the visual arts with the aim of providing the freedom to follow one's own destiny, encouraging the joy of creatively manifesting at multiple levels of difficulty in any activity. Harmonizing cultural differences develop self-esteem, tolerance, resilience, and necessary adaptation to the conditions of a multiethnic society. Abstract:Art therapy enables individuals to use art to creatively express themselves and communicate differently with themselves, others, and their reality. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence guidelines for psychosis and schizophrenia suggest that arts therapies, which include art therapy, are considered to improve negative symptoms of psychosis. We examined the effectiveness of art therapy for people with psychosis and explored whether art therapy is a meaningful and acceptable intervention in this Review. Seven electronic databases were searched for empirical papers that concerned the use of art therapy for adults with psychosis that were published from 2007 onwards. The search identified 18 papers. High-quality quantitative articles provided inconclusive evidence for the effectiveness of art therapy in adults with psychosis. However, high-quality qualitative articles indicated that therapists and clients considered art therapy to be a beneficial, meaningful, and acceptable intervention, although this conclusion was based on a small number of studies. In this Review, we discuss the theoretical, clinical, and methodological issues in light of the development of more robust research, which is needed to corroborate individuals' experiences and guide evidence-based practice.

Teaching a class that covers psychiatric diagnoses is essential for graduate students in mental health professions both for the purpose of providing informed therapeutic services for their clients who may have been diagnosed with a mental illness, and, increasingly, for the provision of diagnosis as a licensed clinician in the United States. Art therapy educators designed an experiential learning approach rooted in two frameworks that humanize mental illness (Two Continua Model of Mental Health and Mental Illness, Power Threat Meaning) combined with reflective art viewing and making. A cumulative art assignment based on one-canvas painting fosters students' critical perspectives through four observed patterns: appreciating impact of layering; understanding mental illness through art materials and processes; empathizing through reflecting on one's own experiences; and recognizing the wholeness of those living with mental illness. The incorporation of response art in the psychopathology class has had the intended dual impact of instilling a humanizing approach to mental illness and fostering self-reflection.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: The present paper elaborates a process perspective of change in psychotherapy for personality disorders (PDs). Firstly, the paper reviews the literature of mechanisms of change in treatments of PD, with the main focus on emotional processing and socio-cognitive processing. Secondly, it proposes an illustrative case-series analysis of eight cases, drawn from a mediation analysis conducted within the context of a randomized controlled trial for borderline personality disorder (BPD).METHOD: As such, cases with good and poor outcomes are compared, as are cases with poor and good intake features and cases with poor and good process markers across treatment.RESULTS: The results illustrate possible pathways to healthy change over the course of four months of treatment, and possible pathways of the absence of change.CONCLUSIONS: These results are discussed with regard to three main research perspectives: the combination of qualitative and quantitative methodology in psychotherapy research may be applied to case study research, a neurobehavioral perspective on change may incorporate the individualized experience in the laboratory and therapist responsiveness to patient characteristics may be a core feature of fostering change. Clinical or methodological significance of this article: The present paper illustrates individual pathways to change in personality disorders. It illustrates how coping capacities influence the process of psychotherapy and outcome in personality disorders. It demonstrates the relevance of individualizing treatments for personality disorders. It demonstrates several integrative features of psychotherapy research, in particular the use of neurobehavioral paradigms and the integration of single-case research within randomized controlled trials.

Building the alliance and using experiential techniques in the early phases of psychotherapy for avoidant personality disorder

Abstract:Individuals experiencing avoidant personality disorder (AvPD) tend to make sense of social interactions via maladaptive self-and other attributions. They also experience difficulties in recognizing emotions. A further feature of AvPD psychopathology is the tendency to resort to maladaptive coping strategies, such as behavioral avoidance and perfectionism. Despite its impact, psychological treatments for AvPD remains poorly investigated. Herein, we describe the first five sessions of Metacognitive Interpersonal Therapy with a 28-year-old woman, whose treatment goal was to reduce social avoidance. We describe how this goal was achieved through a combination of working through the therapeutic relationship, alongside experiential techniques such as guided imagery, rescripting, and bodily work. Through this treatment configuration, the patient was able to increase self-awareness of her own emotions, enabling her to realize that she was guided by rigid schemas; specifically seeing herself as inadequate and others as judgmental. Finally, implications for the treatment of AvPD are discussed.

Abstract:Palliative Medicine, Ahead of Print. Background:Patients receiving palliative care often face psychological distress, which can be challenging for clinicians to manage. Therefore, reflexive and visual journaling can be used as powerful techniques for clinician selfreflection and personal development. These journals are a form of practice wisdom, providing insights into psychological health in palliative care.Aim:This study aims to describe how patients receiving palliative care experience psychological health, explore the meaning of a palliative care clinician's work and contribute to the understanding of psychological health in palliative care through the reflexive and visual journals of clinicians.Design:Using Gibb's reflective cycle as a framework for journaling, this study employs reflexive and visual journaling through the lenses of a psychiatrist and an art therapist. Journal data were analysed using a thematic analysis approach.Setting/participants:The two first authors journaled 107 clinical encounters and created 36 pieces of response art detailing encounters with patients and their families, and clinical conversations in two palliative care centres.Results:Patient attributes and the clinical environment were observed to influence psychological health in palliative care. The patient's ability to navigate dying, maintain personhood, exert resilience and experience satisfying relationships contribute to psychological health. A clinical environment comprising clinicians with holistic competencies, systems promoting interdisciplinary collaborations and a values-based culture that promotes patient centricity strengthens the delivery of psychological care.Conclusions:Good psychological health in palliative care extends beyond psychopathology and is influenced by the cardinal elements of being human, value systems and systemic elements in the therapeutic environment.

Abstract:Personality disorders have a deleterious impact on individual quality of life, and are associated with a significant social burden. Despite a broad range of presentations across the various personality disorders, clinical research has shown a strong bias toward borderline personality disorder. In contrast to the emotional dysregulation of borderline personality disorder, a number of personality disorders are characterised by emotional inhibition and alexithymia. Research increasingly suggests that these deficits in emotional regulation may be symptomatic of problems with metacognition—the ability to identify, understand, and influence mental states. Research and specific treatment approaches are needed which target personality dysfunction characterised by emotional inhibition, rather than dysregulation. Emerging evidence suggests that metacognitive interpersonal therapy may be an effective treatment approach for personality disorders characterised by emotional inhibition. The current case study provides an in-depth examination of the application of metacognitive interpersonal therapy for a man diagnosed with comorbid avoidant personality disorder, and obsessive compulsive personality disorder. The patient described a history of bullying and unmet needs throughout his childhood, resulting in maladaptive interpersonal schemas and metacognitive deficits. Treatment focused on building the patient’s ability to identify and understand his mental states, and targeted schema-driven behaviour. The patient reported experiencing the therapy as helpful, and stated that it contributed to a marked improvement in his quality of life. Results indicate that a 1 year intervention was successful in achieving diagnostic recovery and symptom reduction, supporting metacognitive interpersonal therapy as an effective intervention.

Abstract:Action observation (AO) and motor imagery (MI) has emerged as promising tool for physiotherapy intervention in Parkinson's disease (PD). This narrative review summarizes why, how, and when applying AO and MI training in individual with PD. We report the neural underpinning of AO and MI and their effects on motor learning. We examine the characteristics and the current evidence regarding the effectiveness of physiotherapy interventions and we provide suggestions about their implementation with technologies. Neurophysiological data suggest a substantial correct activation of brain networks underlying AO and MI in people with PD, although the occurrence of compensatory mechanisms has been documented. Regarding the efficacy of training, in general evidence indicates that both these techniques improve mobility and functional activities in PD. However, these findings should be interpreted with caution due to variety of the study designs, training characteristics, and the modalities in which AO and MI were applied. Finally, results on long-term effects are still uncertain. Several elements should be considered to optimize the use of AO and MI in clinical setting, such as the selection of the task, the imagery or the video perspectives, the modalities of training. However, a comprehensive individual assessment, including motor and cognitive abilities, is essential to select which between AO and MI suite the best to each PD patients. Much unrealized potential exists for the use AO and MI training to provide personalized intervention aimed at fostering motor learning in both the clinic and home setting.
