Abstract:1. Predicting space use patterns of animals from their interactions with the environment is fundamental for understanding the effect of habitat changes on ecosystem functioning. Recent attempts to address this problem have sought to unify resource selection analysis, where animal space use is derived from available habitat quality, and mechanistic movement models, where detailed movement processes of an animal are used to predict its emergent utilization distribution. Such models bias the animal's movement towards patches that are easily available and resource-rich, and the result is a predicted probability density at a given position being a function of the habitat quality at that position. However, in reality, the probability that an animal will use a patch of the terrain tends to be a function of the resource quality in both that patch and the surrounding habitat. 2. We propose a mechanistic model where this non-local effect of resources naturally emerges from the local movement processes, by taking into account the relative utility of both the habitat where the animal currently resides and that of where it is moving. We give statistical techniques to parametrize the model from location data and demonstrate application of these techniques to GPS data of caribou in Newfoundland. 3. Steady-state animal probability distributions arising from the model have complex patterns that cannot be expressed simply as a function of the local quality of the habitat. In particular, large areas of good habitat are used more intensively than smaller patches of equal quality habitat, whereas isolated patches are used less frequently. 4. Whilst we focus on habitats in this study, our modelling framework can be readily used with any environmental covariates and therefore represents a unification of mechanistic modelling and step selection approaches to understanding animal space use.

Integrating Resource Selection Information with Spatial Capture-Recapture

Abstract:Understanding space usage and resource selection is a primary focus of many studies of animal populations. Usually, such studies are based on location data obtained from telemetry, and resource selection functions (RSF) are used for inference. Another important focus of wildlife research is estimation and modeling population size and density. Recently developed spatial capture-recapture (SCR) models accomplish this objective using individual encounter history data with auxiliary spatial information on location of capture. SCR models include encounter probability functions that are intuitively related to RSFs, but to date, no one has extended SCR models to allow for explicit inference about space usage and resource selection. We develop a statistical framework for jointly modeling space usage, resource selection, and population density by integrating SCR data, such as from camera traps, mist-nets, or conventional catch-traps, with resource selection data from telemetered individuals. We provide a framework for estimation based on marginal likelihood, wherein we estimate simultaneously the parameters of the SCR and RSF models. Our method leads to increases in precision for estimating population density and parameters of ordinary SCR models. Importantly, we also find that SCR models alone can estimate parameters of resource selection functions and, as such, SCR methods can be used as the sole source for studying space-usage; however, precision will be higher when telemetry data are available. Finally, we find that SCR models using standard symmetric and stationary encounter probability models produce biased estimates of density when animal space usage is related to a landscape covariate. Therefore, it is important that space usage be taken into consideration, if possible, in studies focused on estimating density using capture-recapture methods.

Comparing resource selection and demographic models for predicting animal density

Abstract:<p>ABSTRACTHabitat‐based prediction of population density relies on relationships between landscape configuration (i.e., abundance of land‐cover types) and equilibrium density. This may be accomplished by estimating resource selection probability functions (RSPFs) based on presence–absence data, or by relating carrying capacity to landscape covariates. We used RSPFs for moose (Alces alces) from 2 study sites and carrying capacities from 34 wildlife management units across northern Ontario, Canada, to create 2 estimators of moose density. We compared the predictions of both models to moose density in a novel site obtained via aerial census. We also projected the RSPF across 34 management units and compared predicted density to estimated carrying capacity of each unit. The RSPF and carrying capacity models predicted moose equilibrium densities that were statistically indistinguishable from the estimated density of moose at the novel study site, but the carrying capacity model generated uninformatively broad prediction intervals. The RSPF failed to predict carrying capacities in management units across Ontario; however, the differences between RSPF estimates and carrying capacities varied predictably with differences in covariates related to forage availability, suggesting habitat selection strength and RSPF transferability vary with landscape quality. Estimating densities using RSPFs relies on a consistent relationship between habitat selection and animal density; thus, RSPF applicability across space will depend heavily on similarity between the novel and original sites. Demographic projection benefits from broad spatiotemporal datasets that improve reliability but that are relatively rare and subject to broad error. Our findings suggest that selection‐based population estimation is preferable to demographically based models because of increased precision of estimates, the immediacy of available data (e.g., single survey or radio‐telemetry in multiple sites vs. many generations of population estimates in a time series across space), and the capacity to predict fine‐scale patterns of distribution and abundance. © 2016 The Wildlife Society.</p>

Abstract:Habitat selection is a critical aspect of a species' ecology requiring complex decision‐making that is both hierarchical and scale‐dependent, since factors that influence selection may be nested or unequal across scales. This study investigates how risky features at different spatial and temporal scales influence species' decision making surrounding life history characteristics. It provides insight into the complexity of making informed decisions in which an individual is responding to their immediate environment while simultaneously making decisions in context of the larger landscape. Scale‐dependent behavior is crucial to understand within specific geographic regions as these decisions scale up to influence population dynamics. Habitat selection is a critical aspect of a species' ecology, requiring complex decision‐making that is both hierarchical and scale‐dependent, since factors that influence selection may be nested or unequal across scales. Elk (Cervus canadensis) ranged widely across diverse ecoregions in North America prior to European settlement and subsequent eastern extirpation. Most habitat selection studies have occurred within their contemporary western range, even after eastern reintroductions began. As habitat selection can vary by geographic location, available cover, season, and diel period, it is important to understand how a non‐migratory, reintroduced population in northern Wisconsin, USA, is limited by the lack of variation in topography, elevation, and vegetation. We tested scale‐dependent habitat selection on 79 adult elk from 2017 to 2020 using resource selection functions across temporal (i.e., seasonal) and spatial scales (i.e., landscape and home range). We found that selection varied both spatially and temporally, and elk selected areas with the greatest potential to influence fitness at larger scales, meaning elk selected areas closer to escape cover and further from "risky" features (e.g., annual wolf territory centers, county roads, and highways). We found stronger avoidance of annual wolf territory centers during spring, suggesting elk were selecting safer habitats during calving season. Elk selected habitats with less canopy cover across both spatial scales and all seasons, suggesting that elk selected areas with better access to forage as early seral stage stands have greater forage biomass than closed‐canopy forests and direct solar radiation to provide warmth in the cooler seasons. This study provides insight into the complexity of hierarchical decision‐making, such as how risky habitat features and land cover type influence habitat selection differently across seasons and spatial scales, influencing the decision‐making of elk. Scale‐dependent behavior is crucial to understand within specific geographic regions, as these decisions scale up to influence population dynamics.

Abstract:Our integrated modelling method allows for managers to use citizen sightings combined with detection/non‐detection surveys to estimate robust indices of abundance for both high‐ and low‐density, and wide‐spread versus patchily distributed species. Through comparison with previous studies, we highlight how broad‐scale programmes, such as the statewide efforts to estimate species distributions undertaken here, can benefit substantively from integrated models that leverage additional data (here, incidental records) from a larger region of space, and thus capture more landscape heterogeneity than is plausible within formalized surveys alone. Estimating species distribution and abundance is foundational to effective management and conservation. Using an integrated species distribution model that combines presence‐only data from various sources with detection/non‐detection data from structured surveys, we estimated the distribution and expected abundance of three difficult‐to‐monitor mammals of management concern across New York State, namely, coyotes (Canis latrans), bobcats (Lynx rufus) and black bears (Ursus americanus). Three distinct landscape‐scale camera trap surveys provided detection/non‐detection data over 9 years between 2013 and 2021, and we augmented those data with incidental records of our focal species from public repositories. We used an inhomogeneous Poisson point process to construct an integrated model that fit both data types simultaneously. We demonstrate a simple application of spatial point density of all species records in the accessed public databases to inform the thinning process to account for unknown spatial sampling in the presence‐only data, often referred to as the 'magic covariate'. Using this approach, we examine habitat associations and provide spatially explicit estimates in expected abundance across the entirety of New York State for all three focal species. As expected, coyotes were the most widely distributed and abundant species, with a strong positive association with agricultural land uses. Bobcats exhibited low expected abundance throughout the state and showed positive associations with deciduous forest and forest edge, and a negative association with road density. Finally, we observed considerable spatial variation in abundance of black bears with expected abundance increasing in association with various forest cover and composition covariates and decreasing with crop cover. We present insights into habitat associations and spatial variation in abundance, and provide management implications for each of the species of interest. Synthesis and applications. Abstract:To meet the dynamically changing market requirements, production enterprises are collaborating in the form of production chains to share life cycle engineering data/knowledge as well as to improve production efficiency and product quality. This paper proposes a model-based control mechanism and intelligent control layer, which is used to control the operation of chained production enterprises. The control mechanism is achieved by defining control levels as mapped to production chain topology using the concept of operation isolation area. Production constraints and control rules are defined as attached to structure elements. The proposed control layer is used to decide the suitable operation of the selected production chain, in view of process constraints and operating conditions. A case study of a generic production chain with recycling is used to show the proposed control mechanism.

Abstract:Animals determine their daily movement trajectories in response to a network of ecological processes, including interactions with other organisms, their memories of previous events, and the changing environment. These combine to cause the emergent space use patterns observed over longer periods of time, such as a whole season. Understanding which processes cause these patterns to emerge, and how, requires a process‐based modelling approach. Individual‐based decisions can be described as a system of partial‐differential equations (PDEs) to produce a dynamic description of space use built from the underlying movement process. Here we combine PDE‐based models with step‐selection analysis to investigate the combined effects of three established ecological processes that partially shape movement and space use: 1) a heterogeneous environment; 2) the environmental markings of moving conspecifics; and 3) the memory of direct interactions with conspecifics. We apply this framework to a large GPS‐based dataset of white‐tailed deer Odocoileus virginianus in the southeastern US. We fit models at the population level to provide predictive models, then tailor these to fit individual deer. We specifically incorporate relationships between each possible pair of deer and define each animal's responses to their unique local environments using separate integrated step‐selection analyses. We show how individual movements and decisions yield emergent patterns in animal distributions, and we provide a full generalised description of the framework so that it may be applied to any species simultaneously responding to multiple potentially interacting stimuli (e.g. sociality, morphology, etc.). We found that the population of bucks had highly varied preferences for vegetation, but were shaping their space use in response to conspecific interactions, dependent on the individual relationships between two deer. We advocate for increased consideration of individual‐based movement rules as determinants of realized animal space use, and particularly how these affect emergent distributions of entire species.

A review of statistical models used to characterize species-habitat associations with animal movement data

Abstract:Understanding species-habitat associations is fundamental to ecological sciences and for species conservation. Consequently, various statistical approaches have been designed to infer species-habitat associations. Due to their conceptual and mathematical differences, these methods can yield contrasting results. In this paper, we describe and compare commonly used statistical models that relate animal movement data to environmental data. Specifically, we examined selection functions which include resource selection function (RSF) and step-selection function (SSF), as well as hidden Markov models (HMMs) and related methods such as state-space models. We demonstrate differences in assumptions of each method while highlighting advantages and limitations. Additionally, we provide guidance on selecting the most appropriate statistical method based on research objectives and intended inference. To demonstrate the varying ecological insights derived from each statistical model, we apply them to the movement track of a single ringed seal in a case study. For example, the RSF indicated selection of areas with high prey diversity, whereas the SSFs indicated no discernable relationship with prey diversity. Furthermore, the HMM reveals variable associations with prey diversity across different behaviors. Notably, the three models identified different important areas. This case study highlights the critical significance of selecting the appropriate model to identify species-habitat relationships and specific areas of importance. Our comprehensive review provides the foundational information required for making informed decisions when choosing the most suitable statistical methods to address specific questions, such as identifying expansive corridors or protected zones, understanding movement patterns, or studying behaviours.

Abstract:There is a growing appreciation that wildlife behavioral responses to environmental conditions are scale-dependent and that identifying the scale where the effect of an environmental variable on a behavior is the strongest (i.e., scale of effect) can reveal how animals perceive and respond to their environment. In South Texas, brush management often optimizes agricultural and wildlife management objectives through the precise interspersion of vegetation types creating novel environments which likely affect animal behavior at multiple scales. There is a lack of understanding of how and at what scales this management regime and associated landscape patterns influence wildlife.

Abstract:Encounter rates link movement strategies to intra- and inter-specific interactions, and therefore translate individual movement behavior into higher-level ecological processes. Indeed, a large body of interacting population theory rests on the law of mass action, which can be derived from assumptions of Brownian motion in an enclosed container with exclusively local perception. These assumptions imply completely uniform space use, individual home ranges equivalent to the population range, and encounter dependent on movement paths actually crossing. Mounting empirical evidence, however, suggests that animals use space non-uniformly, occupy home ranges substantially smaller than the population range, and are often capable of nonlocal perception. Here, we explore how these empirically supported behaviors change pairwise encounter rates. Specifically, we derive novel analytical expressions for encounter rates under Ornstein-Uhlenbeck motion, which features non-uniform space use and allows individual home ranges to differ from the population range. We compare OU-based encounter predictions to those of Reflected Brownian Motion, from which the law of mass action can be derived. For both models, we further explore how the interplay between the scale of perception and home range size affects encounter rates. We find that neglecting realistic movement and perceptual behaviors can systematically bias encounter rate predictions.

Linking resource selection and step selection models for habitat preferences in animals

Abstract:The two dominant approaches for the analysis of species-habitat associations in animals have been shown to reach divergent conclusions. Models fitted from the viewpoint of an individual (step selection functions), once scaled up, do not agree with models fitted from a population viewpoint (resource selection functions). We explain this fundamental incompatibility, and propose a solution by introducing to the animal movement field a novel use for the well-known family of Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms. By design, the step selection rules of MCMC lead to a steady-state distribution that coincides with a given underlying function: the target distribution. We therefore propose an analogy between the movements of an animal and the movements of a MCMC sampler, to guarantee convergence of the step selection rules to the parameters underlying the population's utilisation distribution. We introduce a rejection-free MCMC algorithm, the local Gibbs sampler, that better resembles real animal movement, and discuss the wide range of biological assumptions that it can accommodate. We illustrate our method with simulations on a known utilisation distribution, and show theoretically and empirically that locations simulated from the local Gibbs sampler give rise to the correct resource selection function. Using simulated data, we demonstrate how this framework can be used to estimate resource selection and movement parameters.

Abstract:Models of the spatial distribution of animals provide useful tools to help ecologists quantify species-environment relationships, and they are increasingly being used to help determine the impacts of climate and habitat changes on species. While high-quality survey-style data with known effort are sometimes available, often researchers have multiple datasets of varying quality and type. In particular, collections of sightings made by citizen scientists are becoming increasingly common, with no information typically provided on their observer effort. Many standard modelling approaches ignore observer effort completely, which can severely bias estimates of an animal's distribution. Combining sightings data from observers who followed different protocols is challenging. Any differences in observer skill, spatial effort, and the detectability of the animals across space all need to be accounted for. To achieve this, we build upon the recent advancements made in integrative species distribution models and present a novel marked spatio-temporal point process framework for estimating the utilization distribution (UD) of the individuals of a highly mobile species. We show that in certain settings, we can also use the framework to combine the UDs from the sampled individuals to estimate the species' distribution. We combine the empirical results from a simulation study with the implications outlined in a causal directed acyclic graph to identify the necessary assumptions required for our framework to control for observer effort when it is unknown. We then apply our framework to combine multiple datasets collected on the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales, to estimate their monthly effort-corrected space-use.

Choices to landscapes: Mechanisms of animal movement scale to landscape patterns

Abstract:Understanding the geographic distributions of animals is central to ecological inquiry and conservation planning. Movement-based habitat selection models, like discrete-time step-selection functions, are useful for identifying key environmental attributes which animals select upon and can nearly perfectly capture preference patterns between environmental conditions. However, predictions based only on selection can often fail to accurately describe true geographic distributions. We show that by integrating local selection patterns, movement models, and explicit landscape constraints within the same framework, we can better predict simulated distributions than occurrence-based frameworks of selection alone. Using three case studies, we show that this framework can better predict distributions of organisms across increasing scales of out-of-sample prediction: within individuals, between individuals, and even between regional contexts. Movement modeling is a powerful tool to describe both the selection paradigm that organisms apply to the environment and the movement patterns that enable them to apply those selection paradigms. By understanding movement and selection at the same time, habitats that species “prefer” may not be ultimately occupied, as many “preferred” patches may be unreachable given movement strategies and landscape context, often leading to smaller geographic distributions than estimated by selection or occurrence alone.

Abstract:Direct encounters, in which two or more individuals are physically close to one another, are a topic of increasing interest as more and better movement data become available. Recent progress, including the development of statistical tools for estimating robust measures of changes in animals' space use over time, facilitates opportunities to link direct encounters between individuals with the long-term consequences of those encounters. Working with movement data for coyotes ( Canis latrans ) and grizzly bears ( Ursus arctos horribilis ), we investigate whether close intraspecific encounters were associated with spatial shifts in the animals' range distributions, as might be expected if one or both of the individuals involved in an encounter were seeking to reduce or avoid conflict over space. We analyze the movement data of a pair of coyotes in detail, identifying how a change in home range overlap resulting from altered movement behavior was apparently a consequence of a close intraspecific encounter. With grizzly bear movement data, we approach the problem as population-level hypothesis tests of the spatial consequences of encounters. We find support for the hypotheses that (1) close intraspecific encounters between bears are, under certain circumstances, associated with subsequent changes in overlap between range distributions and (2) encounters defined at finer spatial scales are followed by greater changes in space use. Our results suggest that animals can undertake long-term, large-scale spatial changes in response to close intraspecific encounters that have the potential for conflict. Overall, we find that analyses of movement data in a pairwise context can (1) identify distances at which individuals' proximity to one another may alter behavior and (2) facilitate testing of population-level hypotheses concerning the potential for direct encounters to alter individuals' space use.

Abstract:Parasitism genes encode effector proteins that are secreted through the stylet of root-knot nematodes to dramatically modify selected plant cells into giant-cells for feeding. The Mi8D05 parasitism gene previously identified was confirmed to encode a novel protein of 382 amino acids that had only one database homolog identified on contig 2374 within the Meloidogyne hapla genome. Mi8D05 expression peaked in M. incognita parasitic second-stage juveniles within host roots and its encoded protein was limited to the subventral esophageal gland cells that produce proteins secreted from the stylet. Constitutive expression of Mi8D05 in transformed Arabidopsis thaliana plants induced accelerated shoot growth and early flowering but had no visible effects on root growth. Independent lines of transgenic Arabidopsis that expressed a double-stranded RNA complementary to Mi8D05 in host-derived RNA interference (RNAi) tests had up to 90% reduction in infection by M. incognita compared with wild-type control plants, suggesting that Mi8D05 plays a critical role in parasitism by the root-knot nematode. Yeast two-hybrid experiments confirmed the specific interaction of the Mi8D05 protein with plant aquaporin tonoplast intrinsic protein 2 (TIP2) and provided evidence that the Mi8D05 effector may help regulate solute and water transport within giant-cells to promote the parasitic interaction.
A dynamic multi‐scale occupancy model to estimate temporal dynamics and hierarchical habitat use for nomadic species

Abstract:Distribution models are increasingly being used to understand how landscape and climatic changes are affecting the processes driving spatial and temporal distributions of plants and animals. However, many modeling efforts ignore the dynamic processes that drive distributional patterns at different scales, which may result in misleading inference about the factors influencing species distributions. Current occupancy models allow estimation of occupancy at different scales and, separately, estimation of immigration and emigration. However, joint estimation of local extinction, colonization, and occupancy within a multi-scale model is currently unpublished. We extended multi-scale models to account for the dynamic processes governing species distributions, while concurrently modeling local-scale availability. We fit the model to data for lark buntings and chestnut-collared longspurs in the Great Plains, USA, collected under the Integrated Monitoring in Bird Conservation Regions program. We investigate how the amount of grassland and shrubland and annual vegetation conditions affect bird occupancy dynamics and local vegetation structure affects fine-scale occupancy. Buntings were prevalent and longspurs rare in our study area, but both species were locally prevalent when present. Buntings colonized sites with preferred habitat configurations, longspurs colonized a wider range of landscape conditions, and site persistence of both was higher at sites with greener vegetation. Turnover rates were high for both species, quantifying the nomadic behavior of the species. Our model allows researchers to jointly investigate temporal dynamics of species distributions and hierarchical habitat use. Our results indicate that grassland birds respond to different covariates at landscape and local scales suggesting different conservation goals at each scale. High turnover rates of these species highlight the need to account for the dynamics of nomadic species, and our model can help inform how to coordinate management efforts to provide appropriate habitat configurations at the landscape scale and provide habitat targets for local managers.

Abstract:Species distribution modeling is widely used to quantify and predict species-environment relationships. Most past applications and methods in species distribution modeling assume context independent and stationary relationships between patterns of species occurrence and environmental variables. There has been relatively little research investigating context dependence and nonstationarity in species distribution modeling. In this paper we explore spatially varying limiting factors in species-environment relationships using high resolution telemetry data from 14 individual wildcat hybrids distributed across geographical and environmental gradients in Scotland. (1) We proposed that nonstationary limiting factors would be indicated by significant association between statistical measures of variability of predictors and the predictive importance of those variables. (2) We further proposed that most of the limiting factor relationships observed would be related to spatial variation and a lesser amount to mean value of environmental variables within individual study sites. (3) Additionally, we anticipated that when there was a relationship between variation of an environmental factor and its importance as a predictor this relationship would be positive, such that higher variation would be associated with higher importance of the variable as a predictor (following the theory of limiting factors). (4) Conversely, we proposed that when there was a relationship between the mean value of an environmental variable and its importance as a predictor this relationship would be roughly evenly split between positive and negative relationships, given that environmental variables could become limiting either when they are highly abundant or high value, or when they are rare or low value in a particular landscape, depending on the nature of the species-environment relationship for that ecological variable. (5) Finally, we hypothesized that the frequency of supported limiting factor relationships would differ among variable groups, with variables that were directly related to key environmental resources more likely to be limiting than those that would have more indirect impacts on wildcat hybrid habitat selection or foraging. Our results show that assumptions of global, stationary habitat associations are likely not met in many habitat models, requiring explicit consideration of scale and context dependence in a nonstationary modeling paradigm. We found that both the mean value and the standard deviation are strong predictors of whether that variable will be limiting and differentially important as a predictor of occurrence. We confirmed that limiting factors become more limiting when it has higher variability across the sampled data, or when it is rare or not abundant. The frequency of supported limiting factor relationships differed among variable groups, with variables that were directly related to environmental resources likely to be essential for wildcat hybrid ecology more likely to be limiting than those that would have more indirect impacts on wildcat hybrid habitat selection or foraging.

Abstract:Many wildlife species vary habitat selection across space, time, and behavior to maximize rewards and minimize risk. Multi‐scale research approaches that identify variation in wildlife habitat selection can highlight not only habitat preferences and risk tolerance but also movement strategies that afford coexistence or cause conflict with humans. Here, we examined how anthropogenic and natural features influenced coyote (Canis latrans) habitat selection in a mixed‐use, agricultural landscape in Mendocino County, California, USA. We used resource selection functions and hidden Markov models to test whether coyote selection for anthropogenic and natural features varied by time of day or by behavioral state (resting, foraging, and traveling). We found that coyotes avoided development, but, contrary to our expectations, coyotes selected for roads, agriculture, and areas with risk of human encounter and rifle use regardless of diel period or behavioral state. While traveling, coyotes increased selection for roads and avoided ruggedness, indicating that unpaved roads may enhance connectivity for coyotes in mixed‐use landscapes. Finally, we found that coyotes selected for mountain lion habitat when resting and at night, signifying that risk from natural predators was not a factor in habitat selection at coarse scales. Coyote habitat selection for places and times associated with human activity, without variation across scales, signals a potential for conflict if coyotes are perceived by people as a nuisance.

Abstract:Landscape structure affects animal movement. Differences between landscapes may induce heterogeneity in home range size and movement rates among individuals within a population. These types of heterogeneity can cause bias when estimating population size or density and are seldom considered during analyses. Individual heterogeneity, attributable to unknown or unobserved covariates, is often modelled using latent mixture distributions, but these are demanding of data, and abundance estimates are sensitive to the parameters of the mixture distribution. A recent extension of spatially explicit capture-recapture models allows landscape structure to be modelled explicitly by incorporating landscape connectivity using non-Euclidean least-cost paths, improving inference, especially in highly structured (riparian & mountainous) landscapes. Our objective was to investigate whether these novel models could improve inference about black bear (Ursus americanus) density. We fit spatially explicit capture-recapture models with standard and complex structures to black bear data from 51 separate study areas. We found that non-Euclidean models were supported in over half of our study areas. Associated density estimates were higher and less precise than those from simple models and only slightly more precise than those from finite mixture models. Estimates were sensitive to the scale (pixel resolution) at which least-cost paths were calculated, but there was no consistent pattern across covariates or resolutions. Our results indicate that negative bias associated with ignoring heterogeneity is potentially severe. However, the most popular method for dealing with this heterogeneity (finite mixtures) yielded potentially unreliable point estimates of abundance that may not be comparable across surveys, even in data sets with 136-350 total detections, 3-5 detections per individual, 97-283 recaptures, and 80-254 spatial recaptures. In these same study areas with high sample sizes, we expected that landscape features would not severely constrain animal movements and modelling non-Euclidian distance would not consistently improve inference. Our results suggest caution in applying non-Euclidean SCR models when there is no clear landscape covariate that is known to strongly influence the movement of the focal species, and in applying finite mixture models except when abundant data are available.
