Abstract:Background and objective There has been a significant increase in rhinoplasty procedures in Saudi Arabia recently. Cultural factors, societal pressure, and a desire for beauty and self-improvement contribute to the growing interest in cosmetic procedures among the Saudi population. However, limited research has been conducted specifically focusing on the interest in rhinoplasty and the awareness of postoperative complications among female high school students. This study aimed to investigate the interest in rhinoplasty and awareness of postoperative complications among female high school students in Taif, Saudi Arabia. Methodology A cross-sectional observational study was conducted among female high school students through January and February 2024 using a validated questionnaire comprising sociodemographic characteristics, attitudes toward rhinoplasty, and the females' familiarity with the postoperative complications of rhinoplasty. Results The study was conducted among 737 female high school students. About half of the females (N = 376, 51%) were 18 years old, and the other half were under 18 years old (N = 361, 49%). Out of the total females, only 19 (2.6%) underwent cosmetic surgery, with 6 (60%) opting for rhinoplasty. The study found that 152 (20.6%) females were interested in rhinoplasty, and about a quarter of them (N = 99, 13.4%) did not feel happy about their noses. The most common rhinoplasty complications reported by the respondents were a mismatch of the new nose with the rest of the face (N = 471, 63.9%), headache (N = 459, 62.3%), breathing disorders (N = 458, 62.1%), dissatisfaction with the new nose (N = 437, 59.3%), and nose blockage (N = 427, 57.9%). It was found that interest in rhinoplasty was significantly more common among participants having relatives or friends who underwent rhinoplasty than others (N = 51, 25.8% vs. N = 85, 17.2%, respectively; P = 0.010). Moreover, it was revealed that interest in rhinoplasty was significantly more common among participants who were not happy with their nose (N = 78, 78.8%) than those who were happy with their nose (N = 41, 8.3%) and those who did not care (N = 33, 22.9%) (P < 0.001). Conclusions The study revealed that a significant percentage of participants expressed interest in rhinoplasty, indicating a desire for nose reshaping. Counseling services should be available to support students in developing positive body image and self-acceptance. Furthermore, it is important to establish guidelines for media and advertising to guarantee accurate information from surgeons and psychiatrists, ensuring that the public receives balanced and reliable information.

Abstract:Background Rhinoplasty, a prevalent cosmetic surgical procedure worldwide, is not exempt from associated risks and complications, as with any other surgery. In light of the surging demand for rhinoplasty amongst young adults, it is imperative to acknowledge that the procedure can engender various complications that can be classified as either early or late complications. Examples of early complications include epistaxis and periorbital ecchymosis, while late complications may manifest as enophthalmos or septal perforation. The present study endeavors to gauge the knowledge of rhinoplasty complications among adult residents of the Western region of Saudi Arabia. Methods To achieve the research objectives, a cross-sectional study design was implemented, utilizing a self-administered online questionnaire. The study targeted male and female adults aged 18 years and above residing in the Western region of Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire comprised of 14 items, categorized into socio-demographic and rhinoplasty postoperative complications sections, respectively. Results The study gathered responses from a total of 968 participants, of which 60.95% fell within the age range of 18-30 years. The majority of participants identified as female (77.89%), and Saudi citizens constituted the vast majority of the respondents (96.28%). Among the participants, 22.62% expressed a desire to undergo rhinoplasty, whereas 77.38% indicated no interest in the procedure. Of those who sought rhinoplasty, the majority favored having the surgery performed by a skilled physician (81.74%). Notably, participants exhibited a relatively high level of awareness regarding the postoperative complications of rhinoplasty, with respiratory issues being the most widely recognized complication (66.63%). Conversely, headache, nausea, and vomiting were the least familiar complications (100%). Conclusion The study findings reveal a considerable knowledge gap among adults residing in the Western region of Saudi Arabia concerning rhinoplasty's possible postoperative complications. The results underscore the pressing need to establish comprehensive educational and awareness-raising programs to equip individuals contemplating the procedure with the requisite information to make informed decisions. Future research endeavors could delve into the underlying determinants that drive the desire for rhinoplasty and assess potential interventions geared toward augmenting individuals' comprehension and knowledge of the procedure.
Awareness of rhinoplasty surgery among the population in the Jazan Region, Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Background: Cosmetic and plastic surgery is becoming increasingly prevalent all over the world among both men and women. Saudi Arabia ranks 22nd among the top 25 countries with the world's highest rates of cosmetic surgeries. This study aimed to assess the awareness of the population in the Jazan region regarding rhinoplasty surgery and to identify their main determinants. Material and methods: A cross-sectional study of 425 participants was conducted at four randomly selected malls in Gizan City. A self-administered questionnaire was first developed to collect the data necessary to fulfill the research objectives, data were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22. The quantitative data were reported as a mean and standard deviation, and the qualitative data were reported as frequency and percentage. Regarding tests for significance, the Chi-square test used a P value less than 0.05 as an indicator of significance. Logistic regression was used to detect the predictors of poor knowledge of rhinoplasty surgery. Results: The mean age of the participants was 39.46 ± 10.08. Of the participants, 53.6% have poor knowledge while 36.0% have good knowledge regarding rhinoplasty surgery. Moreover, 60.2% have an unfavorable attitude while 23.6% have a favorable attitude toward rhinoplasty surgery. The most important predictors of poor knowledge of rhinoplasty surgery are as follows: (a) old age (OR = 4.89), (b) illiteracy (OR = 4.12), (c) intermediate education (OR = 3.65), and (d) male sex (OR = 1.18). Conclusion: There was a low level of knowledge regarding rhinoplasty surgery among the study participants, most of the participants had negative (unfavorable) attitudes toward rhinoplasty surgery. Mass media plays an important role as a source of information. We recommend further studies to find out other personal factors affecting knowledge and attitude toward rhinoplasty surgery.

Abstract:Introduction Rhinoplasty, a cosmetic surgical procedure aimed at altering the appearance of the nose, has gained immense popularity worldwide. Patients undergo this procedure for various reasons, ranging from aesthetic concerns to functional impairments. Social media, being a ubiquitous platform for sharing and consuming visual content, has emerged as a potential influencer for individuals contemplating rhinoplasty. This study aims to investigate the impact of social media on the prevalence of rhinoplasty among individuals residing in the southern and western regions of Saudi Arabia. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted through an online self-administered questionnaire, targeting male and female adults aged 18 years or older, residing in the western and southern regions of Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire comprised 17 questions, categorized into two sections. The first section sought demographic information, including age, gender, education, and other relevant characteristics. The second section focused on the influence of social media on the decision-making process related to rhinoplasty. Results A total of 1645 participants responded to the survey, with 96.80% being Saudi citizens. The majority of respondents were females (69.11%); 58.52% of the respondents were from the western region of Saudi Arabia, while 41.48% lived in the southern region. Most participants (64.27%) were aged between 18 and 30 years. The study revealed that Snapchat (Snap Inc., Santa Monica, California, United States) was the most influential social media platform, with 43.41% of respondents reporting it as the key influencer for their decision to undergo rhinoplasty. Twitter (Twitter, Inc., San Francisco, California, United States) and Instagram (Meta Platforms, Inc., Menlo Park, California, United States) followed at 22.97% and 12.09%, respectively. Interestingly, 28.42% of respondents acknowledged that social media played a significant role in their decision to undergo rhinoplasty, particularly when promoted by celebrities or trusted figures. Comparing responses from the western and southern regions, the study showed that individuals from the southern region were relatively more influenced by social media, with 27.8% and 29.3% of respondents reporting the influence from the two regions, respectively. Out of the total respondents, only 38.75% reported dissatisfaction with their nose's appearance and condition, while 23.60% expressed a tendency towards undergoing rhinoplasty. Conclusion The study's findings underscore the critical role of social media in influencing patients' decisions to undergo rhinoplasty, particularly in the southern region of Saudi Arabia. Snapchat emerged as the most influential social media platform, with celebrities' pictures before and after the procedure being the leading factor in motivating patients to undergo rhinoplasty. The study highlights the need for further research to explore the potential risks and benefits associated with the influence of social media on patients' decision-making regarding rhinoplasty.

Abstract:Objective.– Development of upper limb functional surgery in tetraplegics in the last 50 years. Methods.– The literature review relating to the years 1950–2002 was carried out with 3 data bases: Medline, Pascal, Embase. This review also involved a thorough study of non-indexed references. Results.– A large number of surgical procedures are described. Two priorities are stressed by the authors: safety of these procedures and duration of postoperative immobilization. Conclusion.– This review of literature shows that the prospects for restoring upper limb function in tetraplegics are greater than ever, offering a larger number of patients the possibility to increase their independence in daily life. Functional surgery remains, nevertheless, demanding in terms of length of immobilization and presupposes requiring a multidisciplinary approach requiring rehabilitation teams to be up to date with surgical procedures.

Abstract:Background: Rhinoplasty is conducted to address both cosmetic and functional objectives. It is not merely a cosmetic procedure, as it frequently aims to improve function by enhancing nasal breathing and removing congenital or acquired obstructions. The current study aims to determine the functional, cosmetic, and psychological outcomes of rhinoplasties. Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. The data were collected using an interview and an online Google form. A chi-square test was used to determine the relationship between qualitative variables and quantitative variables using frequency, percentage, and mean for quantitative variables. Each variable's P value is used to detect statistical significance. The significance level was set at a P value of less than 0.05. Results: Of the 234 patients enrolled in this study, 69.2% were women, whereas 30.8% were men, with a mean age of 22.86 ± 4.546 years. In terms of satisfaction, functional satisfaction accounted for about 59% of all satisfaction, cosmetic satisfaction was 63.2%, and psychological satisfaction was 70.9%. The primary reason for surgery was cosmetic (45%). Conclusion: The majority of enrolled participants were satisfied with their functional outcomes, whereas their satisfaction with psychological and cosmetic outcomes was moderate.
Investigation of the serum level of pregnancy-associated alpha2-globulin during contraceptive treatment by means of radial immunodiffusion method.

Abstract:The serum level of pregnancy-associated alpha2-globulin was studied in 70 healthy women taking three different types of oral contraceptives [40 Bisecurin: containing 1.0 mg of Ethynodiol diaceticum +0.05 mg Ethynilestradiol; 20 Infecundin: containing 2.5 mg of Norethynodrel +0.1 mg of Mestranol; 10 Cervicundin: containing of 0.5 mg Ethynodiol diaceticum]. Elevated amounts of serum level of pregnancy associated alpha2-globulin could be detected in 37 of the 40 women taking Bisecurin and in all 20 taking Infecundin. Cervicundin however, failed to induce any change in the serum protein pattern of the 10 subjects studied. Serum levels of pregnancy-associated alpha2-globulin were higher in the Infecundin-taking (53 mg %), than in the Bisecurin-taking group (29 mg %). This shows the oestrogen dependency of the pregnancy-associated alpha2-globulin and points to a possible implication of this globulin in the immunosuppressive processes.

Abstract:Background: In response to the growing popularity of noninvasive facial cosmetic procedures, this study assessed the rate and predictors of satisfaction with such procedures in Saudi Arabia, filling a research gap and emphasizing the role of patient satisfaction in optimizing care and understanding the economic implications for healthcare. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from May to June 2023 using an online self-administered questionnaire distributed across all regions of Saudi Arabia. Eligible participants were Saudi adults aged 18 years and older who had undergone noninvasive facial cosmetic procedures. Patients who underwent surgical/invasive cosmetic procedures, nonfacial interventions, or interventions performed by doctors other than plastic surgeons or dermatologists were excluded. Results: Most participants reported satisfaction with their procedures. Significant predictors of satisfaction included sex, income, and residential area. Women, higher-income individuals, and residents of certain areas were more likely to report satisfaction. Participants also expressed a high level of satisfaction with the friendly and polite treatment they received from their doctors but showed dissatisfaction with the difficulty they faced in securing immediate postprocedure appointments. Conclusions: This study provides valuable insights into the rate and predictors of satisfaction after noninvasive facial cosmetic procedures in Saudi Arabia. These findings underscore the importance of considering sociodemographic factors in patient satisfaction and suggest areas for improvement in patient care, particularly in facilitating immediate postprocedure appointments. Future research should continue to explore these and other potential predictors to further improve patient outcomes in the field of noninvasive facial cosmetic procedures.

Abstract:Abstract Background Musculoskeletal pain is a common occupational health problem among surgeons that can affect work productivity and quality of life. Objectives The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence and causes of back pain among rhinoplasty surgeons, evaluate their routine practice, and identify unique risk factors. A further goal was to measure functional disabilities with the Total Disability Index (TDI) questionnaire. Methods A structured online questionnaire was distributed to plastic surgeons performing rhinoplasty internationally. The questionnaire comprised sections on biodata, routine practice posture, length of practice, surgical duration, and the history of surgery or hospitalization related to these issues. In the second part of the survey, participants were asked to complete the TDI questionnaire. Results The prevalence of back pain was reported by 93.6% of surgeons, with low back pain being the most common (76.7%). The average pain intensity for low back pain was 44.8 ± 26.8. The mean TDI score was calculated as 31 ± 12.1, with 58.2% of surgeons experiencing mild to moderate disability. Significant associations were found between musculoskeletal pain severity and disability index and factors such as BMI, exercise, years of rhinoplasty practice, number of surgeries performed per week, and average procedure length. Interestingly, only 16.4% of rhinoplasty surgeons had previous ergonomic training or education. Conclusions Musculoskeletal issues related to the spine are prevalent among rhinoplasty surgeons. It is imperative to educate surgeons about this underestimated health problem, provide proper physical rehabilitation targeting ergonomic concerns, and make changes to current practices to address this issue effectively. Abstract:Backboard Cosmetic surgery is the preservation, rebuilding, or improvement of the physical appearance of an individual through surgical and non-surgical methods. In the last few years, an increase in the number of cosmetic procedures was noticed worldwide. This increase suggests due to multifactorial changes in people's attitudes towards cosmetic surgery and concern about their physical appearance. This study aims to assess the impact of self-esteem and self-perceived body image on the acceptance of cosmetic surgery and other related factors in the Eastern province of Saudi Arabia. Material and methods This was a cross-sectional study carried out in the Eastern region of Saudi Arabia. The study was conducted between May and August 2021. A self-administrated questionnaire was distributed to all the participants who are attending plastic surgery clinics and online through social media. Three valid and reliable scales were used [Acceptance of Cosmetic Surgery Scale (ACSS), Body Appreciation Scale (BAS), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSE)] to assess the relationship between these variables and other factors. The data were analyzed by using two-tailed tests. P-value less than 0.05 was statistically significant. Correlation analysis was done by using the Pearson correlation coefficient (r). Results A total of 1008 participants were included in the study with a response rate of 67%. Participant's ages ranged from 18 to 54 years with a mean age of 34.7 ± 11.2 years old. The study participants showed an average level of acceptance with a mean score % of 55.4% comparing to body appreciation; it was 74.2% higher with a more than average level of self-esteem, 24.7 out of 40 points for self-esteem with a mean score of 61.8%. Participants with a history of cosmetic surgery had significantly higher acceptance score than who did not (mean score of 72.6 compared to 57.1; P=0.001). Male participants had better body appreciation than females (mean score of 50.2 vs. 47.6, respectively; P=0.013). A weak positive correlation with no significance was found between participants' self-esteem and their acceptance of cosmetic surgery. Conclusion A better understanding of the acceptance of cosmetic surgery from a different cultural perspective and other related factors including social, psychological, and self-esteem are crucial for the plastic surgeon to ensure patient satisfaction.

Abstract:Anthropometric measurements are essential for diagnosing and treating various craniofacial disorders during nasal reconstruction and esthetic surgery. Different people have unique individual esthetic features that are a mixture of different races and backgrounds. This study aimed to compare 12 different anthropometric measurements in the Saudi Arabian population with those in other local and international studies. This cross-sectional study was conducted with 420 volunteers from December 2022 to August 2023 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Study samples were drawn from the general population, and 12 nasal anthropometric variables were measured, including 7 linear and 5 angular variables, by taking digital photographs from frontal and lateral views. Anthropometric landmarks and measurements were obtained as previously described by Farkas et al. Photographs were analyzed using Adobe Photoshop CS4 software, and facial landmarks were identified. Data were analyzed using an independent sample t test to assess the mean and SD with differences ( P <0.05 indicated a significant value). After statistical analysis, the results were compared with previously published standards for other races. Exactly 420 Saudi Arabian volunteers were examined to compare nasal anthropometric variables. All 12 nasal anthropometric variables differed significantly between male and female individuals. Anthropometry of the nose has an enormous miscellaneous relationship between sexes and populations of different geographic areas. It is important to create average anthropometric measurements for different groups for successful plastic surgery and rhinoplasty.

Abstract:Background: Worldwide, breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women, and a common cause of death-related cancer. Fortunately, evidence suggests that we might be able to help improve the outcome with screening, early diagnosis, and intervention. Objective: The present study investigates the awareness of breast cancer screening and breast cancer risk factors among women in the western province of Saudi Arabia. Method: The present study employed a cross-sectional survey design, with 365 participating females (aged ≥ 18 years) in the western region of Saudi Arabia. Data were collected from December 2019 to January 2020 using a self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire covered sociodemographic characteristics, breast cancer knowledge, risk factors, family history, and screening, as well as personal medical history. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, the t-test, and one-way ANOVA tests. Result: In general, the majority of the women (98.1%) were aware of breast cancer screening. The most commonly identified risk factor in our study was a family history of breast cancer (75.1%), and women with previous exposure to breast cancer measured significantly higher on the socioeconomic index score (M=0.147, SD-0.95) than did those who had never been screened (M=-0.134, SD=1, p=0.007). The findings denote that the women who had a higher knowledge are of a higher socioeconomic class and educational level than were those who were measured and found to have a lower knowledge. Conclusion: The findings indicate that the level of awareness of breast cancer screening and breast cancer risk factors, including knowledge about mammogram usage, among women of Saudi Arabia is acceptable, being more than a half. However, the results are still sub-optimal and more educational campaigns are needed to improve the knowledge and screening compliance.

Despite their prevalence, there is a significant gap in the research concerning the relationship between these procedures and psychological wellbeing, as well as an insufficient exploration of the barriers and motivators influencing their adoption, this study aims to address these gaps. Methods: This cross-sectional study has utilized a secure online survey directed at Saudi university students as the target population. The survey was consisting of 18-item electronic questionnaire including of 4 parts (demographical data, history of psychological illness and screening of current psychological wellbeing using WHO-5 well-being tool, history of doing cosmetic procedure, or willingness to do in the future, barriers and motivators to do cosmetic procedures), and it was distributed across multiple social media platforms. Results: A total of 8443 college students completed the study questionnaire. Exactly 1096 (13%) of the students underwent a cosmetic procedure. The most reported procedures were laser hair removal (9.1%), filler (5.3%), skin boosters (2.8%), and Botulinum toxin A injections (Botox) (2.6%). The most ranked motivators were being painless, with no side effects (8.8 out of 10), followed by being free (8.0 out of 10) and enhancing self-confidence (7.4 out of 10). Conclusion: No significant difference recorded at the overall psychological well-being score between who underwent cosmetic procedures and who did not. However, the advent of non-invasive techniques, including filler injections, Botox, laser therapy, and micro-needling, has significantly elevated the popularity of these procedures. Categorically, aesthetic procedures can be distinguished into surgical and non-surgical interventions, such as filler injections and laser treatments. 1 Traditionally, aesthetic procedures have demonstrated a higher prevalence among women. 1 The literature indicates a positive association between aesthetic procedures and psychological well-being, particularly when coupled with pre-existing high self-esteem. 1 Conversely, in male individuals, younger demographics, those motivated by relationship concerns, and notably those with a history of depression, anxiety, personality disorders, or body dysmorphic disorders, aesthetic procedures have been linked to poorer psychological well-being. 2 In general, minimally invasive aesthetic procedures, such as filler injections, exhibit stronger associations with improved psychological and social well-being compared to invasive procedures. 3 Globally, the acceptance of cosmetic procedures has surged, especially among young adults, particularly females. 4 This trend is mirrored in the Saudi population, where willingness and acceptance of aesthetic procedures have risen in recent years. 5 Nevertheless, there is a dearth of research addressing the attitudes and willingness of Saudi undergraduate university students toward aesthetic procedures. Abstract:Background Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a successful surgical intervention for advanced knee arthritis. The efficacy of TKA in reducing pain and restoring joint function has been well documented. Despite the rewarding outcomes of TKA for knee osteoarthritis patients, their willingness to consider the procedure is limited. Aim This study aimed to assess patients' awareness and knowledge of total knee arthroplasty benefits and complications. Further, the reasons and factors contributing to reluctance among orthopedic patients in Saudi Arabia should be determined. Methods An online, structured, and self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from adult orthopedic patients of both genders who were reluctant to undergo total knee arthroplasty despite surgeons' recommendations. The online questionnaire link was shared across multiple platforms, orthopedic forums, and healthcare social media channels. Qualitative data were presented as frequencies and percentages, while continuous data were reported as the mean (standard deviation [SD]). The statistical package for the social sciences software program was used for statistical analysis. Results A total of 629 participants were involved. The awareness of the expected benefits score, on a scale from 7 to 35, showed a mean (SD) of 20.9 (5.6). The score of the attitude towards expected complications, on a scale from 5 to 25, had a mean (SD) of 15.2 (3.6). The attitude towards the expected complications showed a significantly higher mean (SD) score in the older group aged >60 years than the younger one aged <40 years (15.7 (4.1) vs. 14.9 (3.5), respectively). Likewise, overweight and obese participants showed a significantly higher mean (SD) expected complications score compared to the healthy and underweight ones (15.4 (3.7) vs. 14.8 (3.5), respectively). The recorded reasons for refusal to undergo TKA were fear of anesthesia complications (317, 50.4%), followed by financial limitations (245, 39.0%), the unavailability of experienced surgeons (232, 36.9%), and fear of unfavorable outcomes (189, 30.0%). Conclusion There was a gap in knowledge and awareness of total knee arthroplasty among orthopedic patients in Saudi Arabia. Perceptions of benefits were inadequate, and there were misconceptions about the expected complications. The level of expected complications was higher among elderly and obese patients. Furthermore, fear of anesthesia complications and unfavorable outcomes, in addition to economic and financial problems, constituted major barriers to undergoing the procedure.

Abstract:Rhinoplasty is one of the most popular operations in the world. Despite its popularity, rhinoplasty complications are common and stem from a myriad of issues both subjective and objective in nature. Complications of rhinoplasty include scar, asymmetries, irregularities, imperfections, nasal airway obstruction, skin ischemia or necrosis, nasal collapse, nasal deformity, and overcorrection or undercorrection of a perceived nasal irregularity. A thorough understanding of these potential complications, along with strategies for avoidance and management, is critical for ensuring patient safety and optimizing surgical outcomes.
Awareness about first aid management of epistaxis among medical students in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Background: Epistaxis is the bleeding from nose or nasal cavity and it is considered as one of the most common emergencies presenting in ear, nose, and throat department and accident and emergency department worldwide. Objective and aim: The aim of this study was to assess and evaluate knowledge, attitude, and practice of first aid management of epistaxis among medical students in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional community-based studies were collected using electronic questionnaire distributed among medical students all over the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The study was conducted between September and January 2018. Results: Data were collected from 300 medical students from all over the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia using questionnaires, which were filled electronically. Majority of the respondents were females (75.7%), whereas 24.3% of the respondents were males. Most of the participants were from fourth and fifth year with 25.0 and 24.3%, respectively. 39.7% of the participants responded that fingernail trauma as the commonest cause of the epistaxis, followed by bleeding disorder in 17.3%. 64% of the respondents think that epistaxis is an emergency condition that requires early intervention. 71% of the respondents demonstrated the correct position as first aid measure of epistaxis and only 41.3% of respondents demonstrated the correct site for pinching the nose. The main source of the respondent's knowledge regarding first aid management of epistaxis was self-taught (53.67%) followed by medical books (23.33%). Conclusion: Medical students in Saudi Arabia have an adequate knowledge about epistaxis and first aid measure that can be used to manage epistaxis.
