Abstract:The scratch adhesion test provides a simple rapid means by which the adhesion of coatings can be qualitatively assessed. Despite the widespread use of the technique, the mechanics of the test are still poorly understood, and the manner in which factors such as friction, coating and substrate properties and coating thickness affect the results is unclear. The stresses generated during the scratch test are modelled as a combination of (i) an indentation stress field, (ii) a frictional stress field and (iii) the residual (internal) stress present in the coating. By the imposition of a strain-matching criterion across the coating-substrate interface an interfacial constraint stress may be derived. The results of these analyses will be used to explain some of the experimentally observed variations in scratch adhesion with substrate type, coating type and coating thickness.
