Abstract:The synthesized CuNiAC@Ni/Cu─N─C catalyst is composed of Cu3Ni cluster connected with 2N‐bridged (Ni─Cu)N5 for enhancing the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction, in which two N atoms are shared with NiN4 and CuN3 moieties. CuNiAC@Ni/Cu─N─C catalyst presents high CO Faradaic efficiency of over 90% from –0.3 to –1.1 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Developing atomically dispersed metal on nitrogen‐doped carbon (M─N─C) catalyst provides a promising strategy to convert CO2 into high‐valued chemicals and achieve artificially closed carbon cycles. However, it is challenging to tune the structure and coordination of N─M bond that further improve the intrinsic activity and selectivity of CO2RR. Herein, CuNi atomic clusters embedded in Ni/Cu dual atomic sites catalysts (CuNiAC@Ni/Cu─N─C) are designed and successfully manipulated to regulate the coordination environment for M─N─C catalysts to enhance the CO2 electroreduction reaction (CO2RR). The most active configuration in CuNiAC@Ni/Cu─N─C catalyst is CuNi atomic cluster connected with 2N‐bridged (Ni‐Cu)N5, in which two N atoms are shared with NiN4 and CuN3 moieties verified by both systematic advanced characterizations and density function theory (DFT) calculations. The results have revealed the integration between CuNi atomic cluster and N4Ni/CuN3 dual‐metal atomic sites that optimize the electronic redistribution and narrow the bandgap, thereby decreasing the energy barrier of the potential determination step and promoting CO production.

Mechanistic Insight into Electron Orientation by Tailoring Ni–Cu Atom-Pairs for High-Performance CO2 Electroreduction

Abstract:The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising solution for addressing global issues related to carbon neutrality and energy shortage. However, it is hindered by the high thermal stability of CO2 and competitive hydrogen evolution reaction, which lead to low efficiency and selectivity. Herein, a Ni-Cu atom-pair catalyst with well-defined electron orientation has been tailored for electrocatalytic CO2 RR. In particular, the tailored Ni/Cu 0 . 38 - covalent triazine framework catalyst exhibited extremely high catalytic activity with high faradaic efficiency (99.82% at -1.1 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE) and turnover frequency (5116 h -1 at -1.1 V vs. RHE). To the best of our knowledge, this is a diatomic catalyst with the lowest reported metal concentration and excellent efficiency and selectivity. Density functional theory calculations and experimental results further revealed that the adsorption of CO2 was enhanced, while the electron orientation from the Cu site to Ni site reduced the antibonding orbital coupling between Ni and C atoms in CO2 , thereby breaking the protonation energy barrier and providing high catalytic efficiency. Moreover, the enrichment of electrons from the electrolyte as well as the accumulation of *H at Cu sites was essential for improving CO selectivity.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts show great potential in the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), but face significant challenges in accelerating reaction kinetics. Herein, we develop a three-dimensional heterostructured MgAl2O4/Ni-N-C catalyst via a facile pyrolysis strategy, featuring abundant atomically dispersed Ni sites and similar to 14 nm MgAl2O4 nanoparticles. The MgAl2O4 with rich oxygen vacancies is crucial for stabilizing Ni atoms and promoting CO2 activation, thereby contributing to an excellent selectivity of nearly 100 % and good stability for CO production. The CO Faraday efficiency remains > 90 % within a large potential window (-0.57 to -0.97 V vs. RHE), and achieves the maximum of 98.7 % at -0.82 V. Theoretical calculations reveal that MgAl2O4 introduction can modulate the electron structure of Ni atoms, and accelerate the formation of *COOH intermediate, thus boosting CO2RR performance. This research provides a novel approach for the design of highefficiency single-atom catalysts for CO2 conversion.

Abstract:Direct electrochemical conversion of CO2 to CO product powered by renewable electricity is widely advocated as an emerging strategy for alleviating CO2 emissions while addressing global energy issues. However, the development of low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts with high Faradaic efficiency for CO production (FECO) and high current density remains a grand challenge. Herein, a robust single nickel atomic site electrocatalyst, which features isolated and dense single atomic Ni-N-3 sites anchored on highly defective hierarchically micro-mesoporous carbon (Ni-SAs/HMMNC-800), to enable enhanced charge transport and more exposed active sites for catalyzing electrochemical CO2-to-CO conversion, is reported. The Ni-SAs/HMMNC-800 catalyst achieves excellent activity and selectivity with high FECO values of >90% throughout a wide potential range (the FECO reaches 99.5% at -0.7 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode) and a CO partial current density as high as 13.0 mA cm(-2) at -0.7 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, as well as a far outstanding durability during long-term continuous operation, indicating a superior CO2 electroreduction performance than that of other reference samples and most of previously reported carbon-based single atom electrocatalysts. Experimental and density functional theory calculations reveal that atomic Ni-N-3 coordination sites coupled adjacent defects are favorable to significantly enhancing the formation of COOH* reaction intermediates while suppressing the competing hydrogen evolution reaction, thereby enhancing the electrocatalytic activity for CO2-to-CO reduction. Notably, this work provides a valuable new prospect for designing and synthesizing efficient and cost-effective single atom CO2 electroreduction catalysts for practical applications.

Abstract:This work develops a single‐atom Ni catalyst with abundant isolated atomic NiN3 sites and adjacent rich micro‐mesoporous defects for catalyzing CO2‐to‐CO electroreduction. Abstract:The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising approach to alleviating global warming while concomitantly producing synthesis gas. Simultaneously achieving high current densities and tunable CO/H-2 (syngas) ratios remains a highly desired yet difficult challenge. Herein, we developed a 3D carbon-based material exhibiting bimetallic centers (NiNC and FeNC) with synergistic effects for the CO2RR. The molar CO/H-2 ratio (-1:3 to -4:1) was altered by varying the configuration structures of the metal-N sites and tuning the applied potential for industrial applications of syngas. Density functional theory calculations verified these experimental results. Additionally, varying the configuration structures of bimetallic centers changed the rate-limiting steps of FePc@NiNC(+0.95 eV), NiNC/FeNC (+1.25 eV) and NiPc@FeNC (+1.37 eV) for CO2RR, while maintaining high catalytic activity with tunable syngas production. The reported materials system in this work represents a significant advancement of the CO2RR towards practical applications.

Abstract:Efficient conversion of CO2 to value-added fuels or chemicals using electricity from renewable sources is an appealing approach to realize carbon neutrality. Under this background, it is crucial to design efficient and low-cost catalysts for CO2 electroreduction. Herein, we fabricated an electrocatalyst with the structure of Cu–Ni alloy nanoparticles grown on nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Cu x Ni/NCNT, x = 2.4, 1, and 0.36) for electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) via a hydrothermal method followed by pyrolysis. The optimized CuNi/NCNT demonstrates a favorable CO2RR performance with a CO Faradaic efficiency (FECO) of 94.8% and a current density of 26.6 mA cm–2 at −0.9 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (vs RHE) in the H-cell, far superior to those of single metal counterparts. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations unravel that the Cu–Ni alloys possess much lower free energy changes for the formation of the key COOH* intermediate than those of the Cu metal, thereby facilitating CO2 reduction into CO. Additionally, the CO2RR performance of CuNi/NCNT was further evaluated in the gas diffusion electrode (GDE) involved in the flow cell to examine the practical application of the prepared catalyst, which can deliver a current density of 124.6 mA cm–2 with a FECO of 92.8% at −1.1 V vs RHE. This work enriches electrocatalysts for highly efficient CO2 electroreduction to CO.

Abstract:A variety of atomically dispersed transition-metal-anchored nitrogen-doped carbon (M-N-C) electrocatalysts have shown encouraging electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) performance, with the underlying fundamentals of central transition-metal atom determined CO2RR activity and selectivity yet remaining unclear. Herein, a universal impregnation-acid leaching method was exploited to synthesize various M-N-C (M: Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu) single-atom catalysts (SACs), which revealed d-orbital electronic configuration-dependent activity and selectivity toward CO2RR for CO production. Notably, Ni-N-C exhibits a very high CO Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 97% at -0.65 V versus RHE and above 90% CO selectivity in the potential range from -0.5 to -0.9 V versus RHE, much superior to other M-N-C (M: Fe, Co, and Cu). With the d-orbital electronic configurations of central metals in M-N-C SACs well elucidated by crystal-field theory, Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson (DCD) and differential charge density analysis reveal that the vacant outermost d-orbital of Ni2+ in a Ni-N-C SAC would benefit the electron transfer from the C atoms in CO2 molecules to the Ni atoms and thus effectively activate the surface-adsorbed CO2 molecules. However, the outermost d-orbital of Fe3+, Co2+, and Cu2+ occupied by unpaired electrons would weaken the electron-transfer process and then impede CO2 activation. In situ spectral investigations demonstrate that the generation of *COOH intermediates is favored over Ni-N-C SAC at relatively low applied potentials, supporting its high CO2-to-CO conversion performance. Gibbs free energy difference analysis in the rate-limiting step in CO2RR and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) reveals that CO2RR is thermodynamically favored for Ni-N-C SAC, explaining its superior CO2RR performance as compared to other SACs. This work presents a facile and general strategy to effectively modulate the CO2-to-CO selectivity from the perspective of electronic configuration of central metals in M-N-C SACs.

Abstract:Ni nanocatalysts have been widely utilized in various electrocatalytic reactions, but they are rarely reported in CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR), duo to their pronounced affinity for *CO adsorption and high activity in competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this research, highly graphitized N-doped carbon nanofibers with porous structure (PCNF) are introduced as the conductive and stable substrate for the uniformly distributed Ni nanoparticles (Ni–PCNF). Theoretical calculations demonstrate that this superior carbon substrate can modulate the local electron density within the 3d orbitals of Ni sites, and directly affect their adsorption and desorption energies of *CO intermediates. After the introduction of PCNF, the dominant HER activity is successfully transformed into CO 2 RR activity. Consequently, Ni–PCNF catalyst demonstrates exceptional CO 2 RR performance, and obtains remarkable CO Faraday efficiencies (FE CO ) exceeding 90% with current densities up to 241 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, the porous carbon substrate can facilitate the exposure of Ni nanoparticles, and bring forth an impressive mass activity of 3.44 A mg Ni −1 . This work provides valuable insights into the rational design of advanced Ni-based catalysts for CO 2 reduction and various electrocatalytic reactions.

Abstract:Self-supported transition-metal single-atom catalysts (SACs) facilitate the industrialization of electrochemical CO2 reduction, but suffer from high structural heterogeneity with limited catalytic selectivity. Here we present a facile and scalable approach for the synthesis of self-supported nickel@nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes grown on carbon nanofiber membrane (Ni@NCNTs/CFM), where the Ni single atoms and nanoparticles (NPs) are anchored on the wall and inside of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes, respectively. The side effect of Ni NPs was further effectively inhibited by alloying Ni with Cu atoms to alter their d-band center, which is theoretically predicted and experimentally proved. The optimal catalyst Ni9Cu1@NCNTs/CFM exhibits an ultrahigh CO Faradic efficiency over 97% at −0.7 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Additionally, this catalyst shows excellent mechanical strength which can be directly used as a self-supporting catalyst for Zn-CO2 battery with a peak power density of ∼0.65 mW/cm2 at 2.25 mA/cm2 and a long-term stability for 150 cycles. This work opens up a general avenue to facilely prepare self-supported SACs with unitary single-atom site for CO2 utilization.

Abstract:The accuracy and efficiency tuning the local electronic structure of catalyst active sites are pre-requisites for achieving high selectivity CO 2 reduction reaction on a wide potential window, whereas remain a great challenge. Here, a B-doped CuIn alloy catalyst with tunable electronic structure for the highly effective electrochemical conversion of CO 2 to CO has been exploited. The obtained B-doped CuIn alloy performs an optimal CO Faraday efficiency of 99% at –0.6 V ( vs . the reversible hydrogen electrode) and particularly keeps outstanding CO Faraday efficiency (> 90%) over a wide cathodic electrochemical window (400 mV). Density functional theory theoretical calculation manifests that the enhanced performance is primarily ascribed to the electron-capturing ability of high valence state B atom, which optimizes the local electronic structure of adjacent metal active sites and adjusts the binding energy between catalyst and intermediates. A foundation of designing advanced electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction catalysts can be served by the insights gained though this research. Abstract:Diatomic catalysts inherit the advantages of single atom catalysts and use the adjacent metal-N sites for functional complementary and synergistic effects in electrochemical CO2 reduction (ECR). However, preparation of diatomic catalysts with high yield, Faradaic efficiency and stability together with low overpotential still remains challenging. In this work, we develop a nitrogen-doped carbon supported Ni-Zn diatomic catalyst, whose CO Faradaic efficiency of is higher than 92.0 % in the wide potential range of −0.57 ∼ −1.07 V vs RHE, and the maximum CO Faradaic efficiency is 97.5 % at −0.77 V vs RHE. And also, CN-NiZn performs an extraordinary stability for 30 h in the long-time durability test. More importantly, large-quantities (around 1.66 g) of Ni-Zn diatomic catalysts with remarkable catalytic performance can be prepared by this method. Synchrotron radiation X-ray absorption spectroscopy was tested to reflect the coordination environment and valence states around Ni and Zn atoms. Theoretical calculations further reveal that the synergistic effect between Ni and Zn binary metal sites largely reduces the energy barrier of the reaction to produce the intermediate *COOH, thus effectively increasing the selectivity of ECR. This work indicates that the introduction of another coordination metal can significantly affect the electronic structure of monatomic catalysts, thus improving the electrocatalytic activity and selectivity of ECR.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide electroreduction reaction (CO 2 RR), as a rational regulation of CO 2 resource utilization, demands effectively selective catalysts for converting CO 2 into high-value-added chemicals. Carbon-based nanoreactors featuring rationally designed porous framework structures might provide a unique chemical environment for confining and stabilizing the active metal species, consequently improving the CO 2 RR activity. Herein, nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanospheres decorated by single Ni atom (Ni-NCN) featuring a Ni-N 4 structure were synthesized using the modified sol-gel method for the reduction of CO 2 to CO. The synergistic effect of the Ni-N 4 active sites homogenously distributed in the interconnected pore structure and the favorable chemical confined microspace of carbon nanospheres endows it with excellent CO 2 RR activity. In the H- type cell, Ni-NCN displays a CO Faradaic efficiency up to 96.6% and a CO current density of 9.8 mA cm -2 at -0.83 V (vs. RHE), as well as a high turnover frequency (TOF) of 10658 h -1 at -1.33 V (vs. RHE). In the flow cell, the mass transfer can be further facilitated by the formation of three-phase interface. The Faradaic efficiency and current density of CO 2 RR catalyzed by Ni-NCN is enhanced to 97.9% and 102.4 mA cm -2 at -1.13 V (vs. RHE), and the wide potential window ranges from -0.53 V to -1.33 V (vs. RHE) with the Faradaic efficiency more than 95%. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the high selectivity of Ni-N 4 sites is mainly ascribed to the high energy barrier that restrains the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Meanwhile, the lower CO binding energy on Ni-N 4 site helps the escape of CO to increase the TOF of active sites. The in-situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy verifies that the intermediate ⁎COOH can be more stable in the confined environment of Ni-NCN to promote the selectivity of CO 2 RR. The strategy of constructing confined microspace paves a new path for the rational design of high-efficient single atom catalysts for CO 2 reduction.

Abstract:Abstract Developing single‐atomic catalysts with superior selectivity and outstanding stability for CO 2 electroreduction is desperately required but still challenging. Herein, confinement strategy and three‐dimensional (3D) nanoporous structure design strategy are combined to construct unsaturated single Ni sites (Ni‐N 3 ) stabilized by pyridinic N‐rich interconnected carbon nanosheets. The confinement agent chitosan and its strong interaction with g‐C 3 N 4 nanosheet are effective for dispersing Ni and restraining their agglomeration during pyrolysis, resulting in ultrastable Ni single‐atom catalyst. Due to the confinement effect and structure advantage, such designed catalyst exhibits a nearly 100% selectivity and remarkable stability for CO 2 electroreduction to CO, exceeding most reported state‐of‐the‐art catalysts. Specifically, the CO Faradaic efficiency (FE CO ) maintains above 90% over a broad potential range (‐0.55 to ‐0.95 V vs . RHE) and reaches a maximum value of 99.6% at a relatively low potential of ‐0.67 V. More importantly, the FE CO is kept above 95% within a long‐term 100 h electrolyzing. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations explain the high selectivity for CO generation is due to the high energy barrier required for hydrogen evolution on the unsaturated Ni‐N 3 . This work provides a new designing strategy for the construction of ultrastable and highly selective single‐atom catalysts for efficient CO 2 conversion.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted increasing concerns in electrocatalysis because of their maximal metal atom utilization, distinctive electronic properties, and catalytic performance. However, the isolated single sites are disadvantageous for reactions that require simultaneously activating different reactants/intermediates. Fully exposed metal cluster catalyst (FECC), inheriting the merits of SACs and metallic nanoparticles, can synergistically adsorb and activate reactants/intermediates on their multi-atomic sites, demonstrating great promise in electrocatalytic reactions. Here a facile method to regulate the atomic dispersion of Ni species from cluster to single-atom scale for efficient CO2 reduction was developed. The obtained Ni FECC exhibits high Faradaic efficiency of CO up to 99%, high CO partial current density of 347.2 mA cm−2, and robust durability under 20 h electrolysis. Theoretical calculations illuminate that the ensemble of multiple Ni atoms regulated by sulfur atoms accelerates the reaction kinetics and thus improves CO production.

Abstract:The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) offers an environmentally benign pathway for renewable energy conversion and further regulation of the environmental CO2 concentration to achieve carbon cycling. However, developing desired electrocatalysts with high CO Faradaic efficiency (FECO) at an ultralow overpotential remains a grand challenge. Herein, we report an effective CO2RR electrocatalyst that features Ag single-atom coordinated with three nitrogen atoms (Ag1-N3) anchored on porous concave N-doped carbon (Ag1-N3/PCNC), which is identified by X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Ag1-N3/PCNC shows a low CO2RR onset potential of -0.24 V, high maximum FECO of 95% at -0.37 V, and high CO partial current density of 7.6 mA cm-2 at -0.55 V, exceeding most of the previous Ag electrocatalysts. The in situ infrared absorption spectra technique proves that Ag1-N3 single-atom sites have sole linear-adsorbed CO and can easily desorb *CO species to achieve the highest CO selectivity in comparison with the corresponding counterparts. This work provides significant inspiration on boosting CO2RR by tuning the active center at an atomic level to achieve a specific absorption with an intermediate.
Modulating Electron Density of Ni-N-C Sites by N-doped Ni for Industrial-level CO2 Electroreduction in Acidic Media

Abstract:Electro-chemically reducing CO2 in a highly acidic medium is promising for addressing the issue of carbonate accumulation. However, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) typically dominates the acidic CO2 reduction. Herein, we construct an efficient electro-catalyst for CO formation based on a core-shell structure, where nitrogen-doped Ni nanoparticles coexist with nitrogen-coordinated Ni single atoms. The optimal catalyst demonstrates a significantly improved CO faradaic efficiency (FE) of 96.7 % in the acidic electrolyte (pH=1) at an industrial-scale current density of 500 mA cm-2 . Notably, the optimal catalyst maintains a high FE of CO exceeding 90 % (current density=500 mA cm-2 ) in the electrolyte with a wide pH range from 0.67 to 14. In-situ spectroscopic characterization and density functional theory calculations show that the local electron density of Ni-N-C sites is enhanced by N-doped Ni particles, which facilitates the formation of *COOH intermediate and the adsorption of *CO. This study demonstrates the potential of a hybrid metal/Ni-N-C interface in boosting acidic CO2 electro-reduction.

Abstract:Dual-atom catalysts have the potential to outperform the well-established single-atom catalysts for the electrochemical conversion of CO2. However, the lack of understanding regarding the mechanism of this enhanced catalytic process prevents the rational design of high-performance catalysts. Herein, an obvious synergistic effect in atomically dispersed Ni-Zn bimetal sites is observed. In situ characterization combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveals that heteronuclear coordination modifies the d-states of the metal atom, narrowing the gap between the d-band centre (epsilon(d)) of the Ni (3d) orbitals and the Fermi energy level (E-F) to strengthen the electronic interaction at the reaction interface, resulting in a lower free energy barrier (Delta G) in the thermodynamic pathway and a reduced activation energy (E-a) as well as fortified metal-C bonding in the kinetic pathway. Consequently, a CO faradaic efficiency of >90% is obtained across a broad potential window from -0.5 to -1.0 V (vs RHE), reaching a maximum of 99% at -0.8 V, superior to that of the Ni/Zn single-metal sites.
