Abstract:In this research, a parallel hybrid model is presented for the simulation of nitrogen removal by submerged biofiltration of a very large-size wastewater treatment plant. This hybrid model consists of a machine learning model and a mechanistic model that are combined to produce accurate predictions of water quality variables. The models are calibrated/validated using detailed and quality-controlled operational data collected over a period of 3.5 months in 2020. The mechanistic model applied is a modified activated sludge model that describes the biological, physical and chemical processes taking place in a biofilm reactor based on the domain knowledge of these processes. A three-layer feed-forward artificial neural network with a rectified linear activation function that aims to reduce the mechanistic model's residual error and then correct its output. The results show how the hybrid model outperforms and significantly reduces the size of the mechanistic model's prediction errors of the effluent nitrate concentration from a relative mean error of 12% for the mechanistic model to 2% for the hybrid model during training. The error on nitrate simulations increases to 8% during hybrid model testing, still significantly lower than the error of the mechanistic model. These results support future operational applications of hybrid biofilm models.

Abstract:Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) can benefit from utilizing digital technologies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and to comply with effluent quality standards. In this study, the GHG emissions and electricity consumption of a WWTP were evaluated via computer simulation by varying the dissolved oxygen (DO), mixed liquor recirculation (MLR), and return activated sludge (RAS) parameters. Three different measures, namely, effluent water quality, GHG emissions, and energy consumption, were combined as water-energy-carbon coupling index (WECCI) to compare the effects of the parameters on WWTPs, and the optimal operating condition was determined. The initial conditions of the A2O process were set to 4.0 mg/L of DO, 100 % MLR, and 90.7 % RAS. Eighty scenarios with various DO, MLR, and RAS were simulated under steady-state condition to optimize the biological treatment process. The optimal operating conditions were found to be 1.5 mg/L of DO, 190 % MLR, and 90.9 % RAS, which had the highest WECCI of 2.40 when compared to the WECCI of the initial condition (1.07). This optimal condition simultaneously reduced GHG emissions by 1348 kg CO2-eq/d and energy consumption by 11.64 MWh/d. This implies that controlling DO, MLR, and RAS through sensors, valves, and pumps offers a promising approach to operating WWTPs with reduced electricity consumption and GHG emissions while attaining effluent quality standards. Additionally, the nitrous oxide stripping rate exhibited linear relationships with the effluent total ammonia and nitrite concentrations in the aerobic reactor, suggesting that monitoring dissolved nitrogen compounds in the effluent and reactor could be a viable strategy to control MLR and DO in the biological reactor. The digital-based assessment and optimization tools developed in this study are expected to hold promise for application in broader environmental management efforts.

Abstract:Electricity consumption and sludge yield (SY) are important indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emission sources in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Predicting these byproducts is crucial for tailoring technology-related policy decisions. However, it challenges balancing mass balance models and mechanistic models that respectively have limited intervariable nexus representation and excessive requirements on operational parameters. Herein, we propose integrating two machine learning models, namely, gradient boosting tree (GBT) and deep learning (DL), to precisely pointwise model electricity consumption intensity (ECI) and SY for WWTPs in China. Results indicate that GBT and DL are capable of mining massive data to compensate for the lack of available parameters, providing a comprehensive modeling focusing on operation conditions and designed parameters, respectively. The proposed model reveals that lower ECI and SY were associated with higher treated wastewater volumes, more lenient effluent standards, and newer equipment. Moreover, ECI and SY showed different patterns when influent biochemical oxygen demand is above or below 100 mg/L in the anaerobic-anoxic-oxic process. Therefore, managing ECI and SY requires quantifying the coupling relationships between biochemical reactions instead of isolating each variable. Furthermore, the proposed models demonstrate potential economic-related inequalities resulting from synergizing water pollution and GHG emissions management.

Abstract:This study presents a generalized hybrid model for predicting H2S and VOCs removal efficiency using a machine learning model: K-NN (K - nearest neighbors) and RF (random forest). The approach adopted in this study enabled the (i) identification of odor removal efficiency (K) using a classification model, and (ii) prediction of K <100%, based on inlet concentration, time of day, pH and retention time. Global sensitivity analysis (GSA) was used to test the relationships between the inputs and outputs of the K-NN model. The results from classification model simulation showed high goodness of fit for the classification models to predict the removal of H2S and VOCs (SPEC = 0.94-0.99, SENS = 0.96-0.99). It was shown that the hybrid K-NN model applied for the "Klimzowiec" WWTP, including the pilot plant, can also be applied to the "Urbanowice" WWTP. The hybrid machine learning model enables the development of a universal system for monitoring the removal of H2S and VOCs from WWTP facilities.

Abstract:The potential for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy consumption in wastewater treatment can be realized through intelligent control, with machine learning (ML) and multimodality emerging as a promising solution. Here, we introduce an ML technique based on multimodal strategies, focusing specifically on intelligent aeration control in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The generalization of the multimodal strategy is demonstrated on eight ML models. The results demonstrate that this multimodal strategy significantly enhances model indicators for ML in environmental science and the efficiency of aeration control, exhibiting exceptional performance and interpretability. Integrating random forest with visual models achieves the highest accuracy in forecasting aeration quantity in multimodal models, with a mean absolute percentage error of 4.4% and a coefficient of determination of 0.948. Practical testing in a full-scale plant reveals that the multimodal model can reduce operation costs by 19.8% compared to traditional fuzzy control methods. The potential application of these strategies in critical water science domains is discussed. To foster accessibility and promote widespread adoption, the multimodal ML models are freely available on GitHub, thereby eliminating technical barriers and encouraging the application of artificial intelligence in urban wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Abstract. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are substantial contributors to greenhouse gas (GHG) emission because of the high production of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). A typical WWTP complex contains multiple functional areas that are potential sources for GHG emissions. Accurately quantifying GHG emissions from these sources is challenging due to the inaccuracy of emission data, the ambiguity of emission sources, and the absence of monitoring standards. Locating and quantifying WWTPs emission sources in combination with measurement-based GHG emission quantification methods are crucial for evaluating and improving traditional emission inventories. In this study, CH4 mobile measurements were conducted within a WWTP complex in the summer and winter of 2023. We utilized a multi-source Gaussian plume model combined with the genetic algorithm inversion framework, designed to locate major sources within the plant and quantify the corresponding CH4 emission fluxes. We identified 12 main point sources in the plant and estimated plant-scale CH4 emission fluxes of 603.33 ± 152.66 t a-1 for the summer and 418.95 ± 187.59 t a-1 for the winter. The predominant sources of CH4 emissions were the screen and primary clarifier, contributing 55 % and 67 % to the total emissions in summer and winter, respectively. The comparison against traditional emission inventories revealed that the CH4 emission fluxes in the summer were 2.8 times greater than the inventory estimates, and in the winter, emissions were twice the inventory values. Our flux inversion method achieved a good agreement between simulations and observations (correlation > 0.6 and a root mean square error (RMSE) < 0.7 mg m-3). This study demonstrated that mobile measurements, combined with the multi-source Gaussian plume inversion framework, are a powerful tool to locate and quantify GHG sources in a complex site, with the potential for further refinement to accommodate different types of factories and gas species.

Abstract:Optimizing nitrogen removal is crucial for ensuring the efficient operation of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), but it is susceptible to variations in influent conditions and operational parameter constraints, and conflicts with the energy-saving and carbon emission reduction goals. To address these issues, this study proposes a hybrid framework integrating process simulation, machine learning, and multi-objective genetic algorithms for nitrogen removal diagnosis and optimization, aiming to predict the total nitrogen in effluent, diagnose nitrogen over-limit risks, and optimize the control strategies. Taking a full-scale WWTP as a case study, a process time-lag simulation-enhanced machine learning model (PTLS-ML) was developed, achieving R2 values of 0.94 and 0.79 for the training and testing sets, respectively. The proposed model successfully identified the potential reasons of nitrogen over-limit risks under different influent conditions and operational parameters, and accordingly provided optimization suggestions. In addition, the multi-objective optimization (MOO) algorithms analysis further demonstrated that maintaining 4-6 mg/L total nitrogen concentration in effluent by adjusting process operational parameters can effectively balance multiple objectives (i.e., effluent water quality, operating costs, and greenhouse gas emissions), achieving coordinated optimization. This framework can serve as a reference for stable operation, energy-saving, and emission reduction in the nitrogen removal of WWTPs.

Abstract:Nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions may account for up to 80 % of a wastewater treatment plant's (WWTP) total carbon footprint. Given the complexity of the pathways involved, estimating N 2 O emissions through mechanistic models still often fails to precisely depict process dynamics. Alternatively, data-driven methods for predicting N 2 O emissions hold substantial potential. However, so far, a comprehensive approach is still overlooked, impeding the advancement of full-scale application. Therefore, this study develops a comprehensive approach for using machine learning to perform online process modeling of N 2 O emissions. The approach is tested on a long-term N 2 O emission dataset from a full-scale WWTP. Uniquely, the proposed approach emphasizes not just model accuracy, but it also considers model complexity, computational speed, and interpretability, equipping operators with the insights needed for informed corrective actions. Algorithms with varying levels of complexity and interpretability including k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN), decision trees, ensemble learning models, and deep neural networks (DNN) were considered. Furthermore, a parametric multivariate outlier removal method was adjusted to account for data statistical distributions, significantly reducing data loss. By employing an effective feature selection methodology, a trade-off between data acquisition, model performance, and complexity was found, reducing the number of features by 40 % and decreasing data collection cost, model complexity and computational burden without significant effect on modeling accuracy. The best performing models are kNN (R 2 = 0.88), AdaBoost (R 2 = 0.94), and DNN (R 2 = 0.90). Feature importance of models was analyzed and compared with process knowledge to test interpretability, guiding N 2 O mitigation decisions.

Abstract:In order to promote low-carbon sustainable operational management of the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), automatic control and optimal operation technologies, which devote to improving effluent quality, operational costs and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, have flourished in recent years. There is no consensus on the design procedure for optimal control/operation of sustainable WWTPs. In this review, we summarize recent researches on developing control and optimization strategies for GHG mitigation in WWTPs. Faced with the fact that direct carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions (considered biological origin) are generally not included in the carbon footprint of WWTPs, direct emissions (nitrous oxide (N 2 O), methane (CH 4 )) and indirect emissions are paid much attention. Firstly, the plant-wide models with GHG dynamic simulation, which are employed to design and evaluate the automatic control schemes as well as representative studies on identifying key factors affecting GHG emissions or comprehensive performance are outlined. Then, both traditional and advanced control methods commonly used in GHG mitigation are reviewed in detail, followed by the multi-objective optimization practices of control/operational parameters. Based on the mentioned control and (or) optimization strategies, a novel design framework for the optimal control/operation of sustainable WWTPs is proposed. The findings and design framework proposed in the paper will provide guidance for GHG mitigation and sustainable operation in WWTPs. It is foreseeable that more accurate and appropriate plant-wide models together with flexible control methods and intelligent optimization strategies will be developed to satisfy the upgrading requirements of WWTPs in the future.

Abstract:In the last decade, China has sharply tightened the monitoring values for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). In some regions with sensitive discharge water bodies, the values (24 h composite sample) must be 1.5 mg/L for NH4-N and 10 mg/L for total nitrogen since 2021. Even with the previously less strict monitoring values, around 50% of the wastewater treatment plants in China were permanently unable to comply with the nitrogen monitoring values. Due to the rapid changes on-site to meet the threshold values and the strong relation to energy-intensive aeration strategies to sufficiently remove nitrogen, WWTPs do not always work energy-efficiently. A Chinese WWTP (450,000 Population equivalents or PE) with upstream denitrification, a tertiary treatment stage for phosphorus removal and disinfection, and aerobic sludge stabilisation was modelled in order to test various concepts for operation optimisation to lower energy consumption while meeting and undercutting effluent requirements. Following a comprehensive analysis of operating data, the WWTP was modelled and calibrated. Based on the calibrated model, various approaches for optimising nitrogen elimination were tested, including operational and automation strategies for aeration control. After several tests, a combination of strategies (i.e., partial by-pass of primary clarifiers, NH4-N based control, increase in the denitrification capacity, intermittent denitrification) reduced the air demand by up to 24% and at the same time significantly improved compliance with the monitoring values (up to 80% less norm non-compliances). By incorporating the impact of the strategies on related processes, like the bypass of primary settling tanks, energy consumption could be reduced by almost 25%. Many of the elaborated strategies can be transferred to WWTPs with similar boundary conditions and strict effluent values worldwide.

Abstract:This research optimizes wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) operational performance by integrating advanced control strategies and predictive modeling. Emphasizing the significance of machine learning (ML), feature extraction techniques (filter, wrapper, and embedded methods) were employed to develop robust prediction models. The random forest (RF) model was applied to predict target variables, effluent ammonia, and nitrogen concentrations. Integrating these predictive models into the WWTP’s control system is necessary for enhanced efficiency and pollution regulation. Benchmark Simulation Model 1 (BSM1) was used as the WWTP model. The two tested control strategies included a hybrid approach, combining feedforward and feedback control, resulting in an improved effluent quality index (EQI), a marginal increase in aeration energy (AE) and the operational cost index (OCI), and a significant decrease in effluent ammonia concentration. The second strategy utilized self-organizing fuzzy inference system (SOFIS) control, resulting in promising outcomes with improvements in EQI, ammonia, and nitrogen concentrations, with negligible increases in AE and OCI. The findings highlight the pivotal role of predicting effluent quality parameters and integrating the prediction into WWTP control systems. This integrated approach proves effective in optimizing pollutant regulation and overall system performance. The research provides insights into the practical implementation of ML-based control strategies in wastewater treatment. It offers future scope for exploring advanced ML algorithms and their real-time application in operational WWTPs. This research introduces a novel approach by integrating machine learning with the BSM1 weather dataset and sensor data for feature selection to predict effluent concentrations in a WWTP. Through the comparative analysis with the default proportional-integral (PI) control configuration, the research highlights the importance of integrating machine learning techniques into WWTP control systems.

Abstract:Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a key parameter for evaluating the greenhouse gas emissions from wastewater treatment plants. In this study, a new method for predicting liquid N2O production during nitrification was developed based on a mechanistic model and machine learning (ML) algorithm. The mechanistic model was first used for simulation of two 15-day experimental trials in a nitrifying sequencing batch reactor. Then, model predictions (NH4-N, NO2-N, NO3-N, MLSS, MLVSS) along with the recorded online measurements (DO, pH, temperature) were used as input data for the ML models. The data from the experiments at 20 °C and 12 °C, respectively, were used for training and testing of three ML algorithms, including artificial neural network (ANN), gradient boosting machine (GBM), and support vector machine (SVM). The best predictive model was the ANN algorithm and that model was further subjected to the 95% confidence interval analysis for calculation of the true data probability and estimating an error range of the data population. Moreover, Feature Selection (FS) techniques, such as Pearson correlation and Random Forest, were used to identify the most relevant parameters influencing liquid N2O predictions. The results of FS analysis showed that NH4-N, followed by NO2-N had the highest correlation with the liquid N2O production. With the proposed approach, a prompt method was obtained for enhancing prediction of the liquid N2O concentrations for short-term studies with the limited availability of measured data.

Abstract:This study investigates the potential of control strategy optimisation for the reduction of operational greenhouse gas emissions from wastewater treatment in a cost-effective manner, and demonstrates that significant improvements can be realised. A multi-objective evolutionary algorithm, NSGA-II, is used to derive sets of Pareto optimal operational and control parameter values for an activated sludge wastewater treatment plant, with objectives including minimisation of greenhouse gas emissions, operational costs and effluent pollutant concentrations, subject to legislative compliance. Different problem formulations are explored, to identify the most effective approach to emissions reduction, and the sets of optimal solutions enable identification of trade-offs between conflicting objectives. It is found that multi-objective optimisation can facilitate a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions without the need for plant redesign or modification of the control strategy layout, but there are trade-offs to consider: most importantly, if operational costs are not to be increased, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is likely to incur an increase in effluent ammonia and total nitrogen concentrations. Design of control strategies for a high effluent quality and low costs alone is likely to result in an inadvertent increase in greenhouse gas emissions, so it is of key importance that effects on emissions are considered in control strategy development and optimisation.

Abstract:Global population growth drives demand for clean water, energy, and wastewater production in urban areas. Most existing wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are energy- and cost-intensive. To achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, many regions have implemented strict policies for energy consumption and contaminated water discharge, promoting environmental sustainability. This paper attempts to enhance the achievement of SDGs in the wastewater treatment industry by proposing a novel method for hierarchical control of wastewater treatment plants to ensure energy and cost efficiency with less knowledge of the process model, fewer measurements, and fewer control loops. This controller is the combination of a machine learning control technique with a bio-inspired computational algorithm. To evaluate and validate the performance of the proposed controller on the WWTP, the benchmark simulation model no. 1 (BSM1) has been used. The most significant contributions of this paper show that 488.96 KWh/d, 3620.08 Kg/d, and 3454.55 KWh/d of aeration energy cost index, sludge production cost index, and operational cost index are respectively saved when compared to the default control strategy (DCS). Also, 893.69 Kg pollution units per day of effluent fine-related costs have been successfully recovered when compared to the DCS. The experimental results illustrate that the proposed control yields significant amelioration of the energy and cost profile of the WWTP with no effluent violation in dry, rain, and storm weather conditions.

Abstract:The effectiveness of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is largely determined by the microbial community structure in their activated sludge (AS). Interactions among microbial communities in AS systems and their indirect effects on water quality changes are crucial for WWTP performance. However, there is currently no quantitative method to evaluate the contribution of microorganisms to the operating efficiency of WWTPs. Traditional assessments of WWTP performance are limited by experimental conditions, methods, and other factors, resulting in increased costs and experimental pollutants. Therefore, an effective method is needed to predict WWTP efficiency based on AS community structure and quantitatively evaluate the contribution of microorganisms in the AS system. This study evaluated and compared microbial communities and water quality changes from WWTPs worldwide by meta-analysis of published high-throughput sequencing data. Six machine learning (ML) models were utilized to predict the efficiency of phosphorus and nitrogen removal in WWTPs; among them, XGBoost showed the highest prediction accuracy. Cross-entropy was used to screen the crucial microorganisms related to phosphorus and nitrogen removal efficiency, and the modeling confirmed the reasonableness of the results. Thirteen genera with nitrogen and phosphorus cycling pathways obtained from the screening were considered highly appropriate for the simultaneous removal of phosphorus and nitrogen. The results showed that the microbes Haliangium , Vicinamibacteraceae , Tolumonas , and SWB02 are potentially crucial for phosphorus and nitrogen removal, as they may be involved in the process of phosphorus and nitrogen removal in sewage treatment plants. Overall, these findings have deepened our understanding of the relationship between microbial community structure and performance of WWTPs, indicating that microbial data should play a critical role in the future design of sewage treatment plants. The ML model of this study can efficiently screen crucial microbes associated with WWTP system performance, and it is promising for the discovery of potential microbial metabolic pathways.

Abstract:Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) optimal operation is vital for sustainable wastewater management. Nonlinear autoregressive networks with exogenous inputs and architectures optimized by genetic algorithms (GA-NARX) were used to model energy consumption, effluent quality (EQ), and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The GA-NARX were fed with 7 influent and operational variables, and were individually trained to predict 10 effluent variables and the performance indices. The mean absolute percentage error at prediction varied between 1.136 % and 21.460 %. The developed models were employed in WWTP operation optimization by unevenly distributing airflow in the aerated bioreactor. Multi-objective optimization of energy demand, EQ, and GHG emissions was used to search for the best values of the air distribution factors. Two optimization cases were investigated, the first working with EQ predicted values, while in the second case effluent concentrations were also predicted to calculate EQ and reveal the pollution loading limits violation. Selected solutions decreased the performance indices. The largest improvements were 2.01 %, 0.28 %, and 1.14 % for energy demand, EQ, and GHG emissions. The NARX models succeeded to efficiently model the WWTP main variables, predict performance indices and provide valuable support for operation optimization, leading to diminished energy consumption, improved effluent quality and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Abstract:In wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), aeration is vital for microbial oxygen needs. To achieve carbon neutrality, optimizing aeration for energy and emissions reduction is imperative. Machine learning (ML) is used in wastewater treatment to reveal complex rules in large data sets has become a trend. In this vein, the present paper proposes an aeration optimization approach based on the extreme gradient boosting-bidirectional long short-term memory (XGB-Bi-LSTM) model via the online monitoring of oxygen transfer efficiency (OTE) and oxygen uptake rate (OUR), thus allowing WWTPs to conserve energy and reduce indirect carbon emissions. The approach uses gain algorithm of XGB to calculate the importance of features and identify important parameters, and then uses Bi-LSTM to predict the target with important parameters as features. Operational data from a WWTP in Suzhou, China, is employed to train and test the approach, the performance of which is compared with ML models suitable for regression prediction tasks (XGB, random forest, light gradient boosting machine, gradient boosting and LSTM). Experimental results show the approach requires only a small number of input parameters to achieve good performance and outperforms other machine-learning models. When OTE and dissolved oxygen (DO) are used as features to predict the alpha factor (αF; since diffusers were used, multiply by the pollution factor F), the R-squared (R<sup>2</sup>) is 0.9977, the root mean square error (RMSE) is 0.0043, the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) is 0.0069 and the median absolute error (MedAE) is 0.0032. When the predicted αF and the OUR are used as features to predict the air flow rate of an aeration unit, the R<sup>2</sup> is 0.9901, the RMSE is 3.6150, the MAPE is 0.0209 and the MedAE is 1.5472. Using our optimized aeration approach, the energy consumption can be reduced by 23%.

Abstract:Effective treatment of sewage by wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are essential to protecting water environment as well as people's health worldwide. However, operation of WWTPs is usually intricate due to precarious influent characteristics and nonlinear sewage treatment processes. Effective modeling of WWTPs can provide valuable decision-making support to facilitate their daily operations and management. In this study, we have built a novel hybrid model by combining a process-based WWTP model (GPS-X) with a data-driven machine learning model (Random Forest) to improve the simulation of long-term hourly effluent ammonium-nitrogen concentration of a WWTP. Our study results have shown that the hybrid GPS-X-RF model performs the best with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.95 and root mean squared error (RMSE) of 0.23 mg/L, followed by the GPS-X model with a R2 of 0.93 and RMSE of 0.33 mg/L and last the Random Forest model with a R2 of 0.84 and RMSE of 0.41 mg/L. Capable of incorporating wastewater treatment mechanisms and utilizing superior data mining capabilities of machine learning, the hybrid model adapts better to the large fluctuations in influent and operating conditions of the WWTP. The proposed hybrid modeling framework may be easily extended to WWTPs of various size and types to simulate their operations under increasingly variable environmental and operating conditions.

Abstract:In wastewater treatment intensification, hierarchical control structures are developed to improve the plant's performance. This paper proposes two novel hybrid supervised hierarchical control structures for specifying the dissolved oxygen concentration in the last aerobic reactor of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) based on the nitrification rate and the ammonia level in this reactor. These structures combine the optimum disturbance rejection PI control (OPI), adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), and genetic algorithms (GA) to reduce energy consumption and operational costs, improve effluent quality, and reduce the number and percentage of times the established maximum concentration of pollutants in the effluent of the WWTP is violated. The proposed control strategy is implemented and evaluated using benchmark simulation model no. 1 (BSM1). The OPI-ANFIS-GA configuration significantly enhances effluent quality in dry, rainy, and stormy weather conditions, reducing total nitrogen violations by 50.17%, 63.35%, and 47.35%, respectively. Then, 6.79% and 7.12% of aeration energy and 1.44% and 1.46% of operational costs are reduced in dry and rain weather conditions. The OPI-ANFIS configuration enhanced significant energy savings and a cost reduction in storm weather conditions. Both configurations led to a 49.89% decrease in total suspended sludge (TSS) during stormy weather conditions. The proposed controller significantly improves the performance of the WWTP in all weather scenarios compared to the default controller and similar controllers found in the literature.
