Abstract:Scientists' limited understanding of tropical plant communities obscures the true extent of species loss caused by habitat destruction 1 . The Centinelan extinction hypothesis 2,3 posits an extreme but widely referenced scenario wherein forest clearing causes the immediate extinction of species known only from a single geographic location. It remains unclear, however, whether the disappearance of such microendemics reflects their global extinction or insufficient collection effort at larger scales. Here we test these hypotheses by synthesizing decades of floristic data from the heavily deforested tropical cloud forest (TCF) at Centinela, Ecuador. We find that 99% of its putative microendemics have been collected elsewhere and are not extinct. Our field work also revealed new species, highlighting the enduring conservation value of TCFs and the intense efforts required to illuminate such plant diversity 'darkspots' 4 . Field and herbarium research remain essential to the conservation action needed to forestall large-scale plant extinctions in Earth's beleaguered cloud forests.

Abstract:The giant tortoises of the Galápagos have become greatly depleted since European discovery of the islands in the 16th Century, with populations declining from an estimated 250 000 to between 8000 and 14 000 in the 1970s. Successful tortoise conservation efforts have focused on species recovery, but ecosystem conservation and restoration requires a better understanding of the wider ecological consequences of this drastic reduction in the archipelago's only large native herbivore. We report the first evidence from palaeoecological records of coprophilous fungal spores of the formerly more extensive geographical range of giant tortoises in the highlands of Santa Cruz Island. Upland tortoise populations on Santa Cruz declined 500-700 years ago, likely the result of human impact or possible climatic change. Former freshwater wetlands, a now limited habitat-type, were found to have converted to Sphagnum bogs concomitant with tortoise loss, subsequently leading to the decline of several now-rare or extinct plant species.

Abstract:We present notable distributional updates for 14 species from western Ecuador (seven amphibians and seven reptiles). Additionally, we document new records and notes on the distribution range of Agalychnis spurrelli, Hyloscirtus alytolylax, Engystomops montubio, Pristimantis muricatus, Pristimantis nyctophylax, Pristimantis walkeri, Chironius flavopictus, Chironius grandisquamis, Dendrophidion graciliverpa, Ninia schmidti, and Urotheca fulviceps. These observations significantly contribute to filling information gaps in our understanding of these species' distributions. The data, derived from samples collected across diverse forested areas in the western region of Ecuador (provinces of Bolívar, Cañar, Guayas, El Oro, and Los Ríos), provide valuable insights into the ecology and conservation of these species. Abstract:Oceanic islands are vulnerable ecosystems and their flora has been under pressure since the arrival of the first humans. Human activities and both deliberately and inadvertently introduced biota have had and continue to have a severe impact on island endemic plants. The number of alien plants has increased nearly linearly on many islands, perhaps resulting in extinction-based saturation of island floras. Here, we provide evidence for such a scenario in Alejandro Selkirk, Robinson Crusoe Islands (Archipelago Juan Fernández, Chile). We compared species richness and species composition of historical vegetation samples from 1917 with recent ones from 2011. Changes in species' relative occurrence frequency were related to their taxonomic affiliation, dispersal mode, distribution status, and humidity and temperature preferences. While total species richness of vascular plants remained relatively similar, species composition changed significantly. Plants endemic to the Robinson Crusoe Islands declined, exotic species increased substantially within the period of ca. 100 years. Further, the relative occurrence frequency of plants with preferences for very warm and humid climate decreased, while the opposite was found for plants preferring drier and colder environments. Potential drivers responsible for this dramatic shift in the vegetation within only one century might have been the large goat population affecting especially small populations of endemic plants and climatic changes. Taking into account a substantial extinction debt, we expect further shifts in the vegetation of this small oceanic island toward alien plants. This would have significant negative consequences on global biodiversity, considering that island floras contribute substantially to global plant species richness due to their high proportion of endemics.

Abstract:<p>Mountain ecosystems support a significant one-third of all terrestrial biodiversity, but our understanding of the spatiotemporal maintenance of this high biodiversity remains poor, or at best controversial. The Himalaya hosts a complex mountain ecosystem with high topographic and climatic heterogeneity and harbors one of the world's richest floras. The high species endemism, together with increasing anthropogenic threats, has qualified the Himalaya as one of the most significant global biodiversity hotspots. The topographic and climatic complexity of the Himalaya makes it an ideal natural laboratory for studying the mechanisms of floral exchange, diversification, and spatiotemporal distributions. Here, we review literature pertaining to the Himalaya in order to generate a concise synthesis of the origin, distribution, and climate change responses of the Himalayan flora. We found that the Himalaya supports a rich biodiversity and that the Hengduan Mountains supplied the majority of the Himalayan floral elements, which subsequently diversified from the late Miocene onward, to create today's relatively high endemicity in the Himalaya. Further, we uncover links between this Miocene diversification and the joint effect of geological and climatic upheavals in the Himalaya. There is marked variance regarding species dispersal, elevational gradients, and impact of climate change among plant species in the Himalaya, and our review highlights some of the general trends and recent advances on these aspects. Finally, we provide some recommendations for conservation planning and future research. Our work could be useful in guiding future research in this important ecosystem and will also provide new insights into the maintenance mechanisms underpinning other mountain systems.</p>

Abstract:Large‐scale disturbance events provide ideal opportunities to directly study recolonisation processes in natural environments, via the removal of competitors and the formation of newly vacant habitat. A high magnitude earthquake in central New Zealand in 2016 created major ecological disturbance, with coastal tectonic uplift of up to ~ 6 m extirpating vast swathes of intertidal organisms. One of the affected species was Durvillaea antarctica (rimurapa or southern bull kelp), which is an important habitat‐forming intertidal macroalga capable of long‐distance dispersal. Across the complex fault system with varying amounts of uplift, the species was either locally extirpated or heavily reduced in abundance. We hypothesised that neutral priority effects and chance dispersal from other populations would influence which lineages would establish. We sampled individuals of D. antarctica across the uplift zone immediately after the earthquake in 2016 and then repeatedly sampled new recruits in the same areas between 2017 and 2020, using genotyping‐by‐sequencing to provide 'before' and 'after' genomic comparisons. Our results revealed strong geographic clustering but little evidence of new lineages establishing at disturbed sites, although populations at uplifted sites remain at remarkably low densities. We infer that recolonisation has thus far primarily originated from refugial, remnant patches within the uplift zone. To complement the phylogeographic analysis, we estimated oceanographic connectivity among the uplift zone sample locations. The connectivity modelling estimated that northbound dispersal of D. antarctica was more likely, but we have not yet detected southern genotypes in the recolonised populations. As the ongoing recolonisation process transitions from an ecological to an evolutionary timescale, change remains possible. This study provides the first genomic 'snapshots' of a natural recolonisation process following a large‐scale ecological disturbance event, and ongoing research has the potential to reveal important insight into both micro‐ and macroevolutionary processes.

Abstract:Most aquatic macrophytes are ecozone-endemic species, and approximately two-thirds of them have rare occurrence at global scale. These small-range plants are seriously under-studied at macroecological scale, despite their marked vulnerability to extinction through habitat loss and climate change. To identify global hotspots of endemism and rarity of aquatic macrophytes and examine the factors that resulted in speciation hotspots of macrophytes in some areas of the planet. We analysed a database of 3499 macrophyte species to locate speciation hotspots and assess the biogeographic and environmental drivers that maintain ecozone-endemic, and globally rare species within their current limited global areas of occupancy. Ecozone-endemic and globally rare macrophyte species hotspots across the planet showed similar occurrence patterns and drivers among ecozones. Ecozone environmental conditions, particularly harsh environments, influenced macrophyte phylogenetic diversity and structure. Most macrophyte species diversification is recent (<10 million years ago). A negative association with bird-mediated zoochory was seen for endemicity and rarity hotspots. This study identified hotspots of endemicity and rarity, and potential cradle and museum speciation areas. Our findings could inform global action to conserve the macrophyte diversity of wetlands, and other inland aquatic habitats, across the world.

Abstract:Biodiversity is vital for the stability of the planet; its ecosystem services provide essential elements for our survival and well-being. This review analyzes the national biodiversity policies and describes the main strategies for biodiversity conservation in Ecuador, one of the “mega-diverse” countries in the world with the highest species density. It deepens an analysis of in-situ and ex-situ conservation processes. Ecuador has six clear policies for biodiversity conservation. These policies strengthen biodiversity conservation through mechanisms that improve the well-being of wildlife by ensuring human, wildlife and ecosystem health. It promotes actions for the welfare of wildlife, through technical, administrative and legal tools. The National System of Protected Areas, with 60 protected areas, is the most effective in-situ conservation instrument at the country level. Several ex-situ conservation and management means for the conservation of wild species are being utilized, including nurseries, botanical gardens, zoos, germplasm banks, aquariums, species reproduction and rehabilitation centers. Ecuador is making slow progress on ex-situ conservation despite the availability of a sound policy framework, possibly due to financial, infrastructural, and/or technological challenges, and knowledge gaps. We propose fostering international research collaborations and establishing fully funded small-scale captive breeding programs at zoos, aquariums and university research facilities to help recovery of at-risk species of reptiles, amphibians, fish and species beyond Galapagos region. We recommend utilizing citizen science programs to fill the gaps of biodiversity information and increasing efforts to revive the ex-situ conservation strategies in protecting the unique biodiversity of Ecuador.

Abstract:As interest in including local communities and their knowledge in biodiversity conservation increases, challenges to do so become clear. One of them is to harmonize local and academic assessments of conservation status. Here, we document the culturally valuable flora of two Amazigh communities in the Moroccan High Atlas Mountains and contrast local conservation observations with IUCN and other red-listing assessments. Our study reveals two levels of mismatch. Unsurprisingly, the species of interest of these two knowledge systems differ considerably. Moreover, species' availability and populations' trends of change and the conservation evaluations often diverge between local and academic assessments. Locally valuable species are rarely threatened, but a focus on locally prioritized species is essential to ensure the active participation of local communities in conservation initiatives. Given the salient role of IUCN Red Lists in guiding conservation action, a better understanding of the differences in plant value and conservation assessments between the two knowledge systems can help harmonize biodiversity conservation and community wellbeing goals.

Abstract:Sheer cliffs on mountains and in deep canyons are among the worlds most iconic landmarks but our understanding of the enigmatic flora that lives in these vertical rock landscapes remains fragmented. In this article, I review and synthesize recent studies on the evolution of specialization onto bare rock and its consequences for plant diversification. Putative adaptations commonly associated with growth on bare rock include specialized root structures, stress tolerant leaf traits, and reduced dispersibility. Fitness tradeoffs are a principal explanation for edaphic specialization, but adaptation to bare environments stands apart as a precursor environment to specialization in other stressful habitats, such as chemically harsh soils. In species level phylogenies, many rock specialist plants are evolutionarily isolated and form the sister lineage to congeners found on decomposed substrates, suggesting that specialization onto bare rock may be an evolutionary trap or dead end. In other cases, rock specialists form diverse clades, suggesting archipelago speciation or ecological release enabled by innovations in stress tolerance. Today, in environments severely impacted by poor management and introduced organisms, such as islands, cliffs serve as important refuges for stress tolerant endangered plants. New technology for climbing safety and drone assisted reconnaissance open new possibilities for the discovery and conservation of cliff plants in these landscapes but come with the inherent risks of increasing their accessibility. The future success of efforts to save plants from extinction may depend on our understanding of the unique and resilient flora endemic to cliffy places.

Abstract:Mountainous regions contain some of the most dynamic landscapes in the world and host a majority of the global biodiversity hotspots. The Hengduan Mountains, located at the syntax of Eurasia and India, have a complex geological history associated with the hyperdiverse assemblage of species. Tectonics and geomorphic and climate processes in the Hengduan Mountains may have jointly caused the emergence of high biodiversity. We propose three mechanisms that may promote high-level montane biodiversity: habitat creation, habitat disruption, and habitat oscillations. We mapped species richness patterns for seed plants and computed phylogenetic endemism across the entire Hengduan region. We developed a set of geomorphic metrics regarding these mechanisms to link plant richness and phylogenetic endemism patterns. By estimating the component of species richness due to habitat heterogeneity, we isolate the component due to tectono-geomorphic processes. We found that regions of exceptionally high species richness are explained by a combination of habitat heterogeneity and tectono-geomorphic processes, while glaciation and high climate change velocity are associated with low richness, thus contributing to recent extinction. We interpret the richness of biodiversity hotspots in the Hengduan Mountains in terms of climatic and tectonic processes.

Abstract:Actualmente, en nuestro país observamos a diario como están las ciudades, contaminadas de residuos sólidos, basura, objetos sin vida, así como también existen factores artificiales como la lluvia ácida y la deforestación ya que esto afecta a la contaminación de la flora y fauna en el cantón. La contaminación en su definición imposibilita el crecimiento de muchas especies vegetales, porque la presencia de sustancias químicas en el suelo altera los procesos vitales de las plantas. No existe una gran variedad de especies, como ocurre en los sectores no urbanos, donde el hombre ha tenido un menor grado de influencia y son menores los niveles de contaminación. La consecuencia de las actividades industriales y del transporte, contamina la atmósfera, es responsable de la destrucción de grandes bosques, afecta el suelo que se contamina con sustancias ácidas que dificultan o impiden el crecimiento de nuevas especies vegetales, con lo cual se favorece la erosión del suelo. La contaminación de la flora y fauna ha provocado la destrucción de la biodiversidad en el Planeta. Actualmente en el Ecuador incluyen aproximadamente el 11% de las especies existentes en el mundo y el 30% de las especies enumeradas en América Latina, lo cual en sus datos anteriores era de un 13%.Tabla 1: Flora y fauna contaminada Actualmente el territorio ecuatoriano recoge 25.000 especies de plantas vasculares. Abstract:The establishment of pastures and forestry plantations has increased globally to meet growing demands for meat and wood products. Pasture and plantation expansion often drives deforestation, which causes homogenization of biotic communities and is a major driver of the global extinction crisis. A core question is how the severity of losses varies between pastures and plantations, and in turn, how geographical location and plantation management characteristics moderate these impacts. Focusing on herpetofauna (amphibians and reptiles) as the most endangered vertebrate group, we performed a global synthesis using 41 scientific articles that reported species richness or abundance in pastures and forestry plantations relative to natural forest in 191 case studies among 19 countries. We found a severe negative effect of pasture and a less negative effect of forestry plantations on species richness and abundance of herpetofauna. Within plantations, species richness and total abundance were more negatively impacted in amphibians than reptiles, in the tropics, when planting exotic tree species, monocultures, large or commercial plantations, and when clearing understory vegetation. Yet mixed, old, small, or conservation plantations and those permitting recovery of understory vegetation had no negative impacts relative to the reference natural forest. Synthesis and applications. The loss of herpetofauna species richness and abundance underscores the importance of halting ongoing tropical deforestation for pasture and intensive forestry plantations. The potential for appropriately managed forestry plantations to support biodiversity in regions lacking forest cover, including via replacement of anthropogenic pastures, suggests that such plantations have an important role under global reforestation agendas.

Abstract:The Ecuadorian Amazon holds more biodiversity than most other places on Earth. Palms are a particularly dominant component of the vegetation; however, it remains unknown to what degree the pattern has persisted through time. Here, we investigate the persistence of palm dominance through time and the degree to which past human activities (e.g., fire, cultivation, and forest opening) have affected changes in palm abundances across five regions of the Ecuadorian Amazon. We analyzed soil cores (40–80 cm depth) from each region for charcoal (evidence of past fire) and phytoliths (evidence of past vegetation change). The timings of fires (based on 14C radiocarbon dates), the occurrence, recurrence, and number of fires (based on charcoal presence and abundance in samples), and the amount of change in palm abundances (based on phytoliths) varied within and between the studied regions. The charcoal and phytolith results indicate the presence of low levels of past human activity at all sites. Our results show that patterns of modern palm hyperdominance found in Amazonian forests have not been persistent through time, and that even low levels of past human activities can affect palm abundance.
