Abstract:Biochar prepared from agricultural waste resource coconut shells was used as the original charcoal, which was oxidatively modified and characterized using batch adsorption tests before and after modification by SEM, FTIR, surface area, and elemental analyses. The removal capacity and adsorption mechanism of the modified biochar for Pb2+ and Cd2+ in water were investigated, and its adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics were discussed. The findings demonstrated that the specific surface area of potassium permanganate and nitric acid-modified coconut shell carbon (MHBC) is 3.02 times than that of the coconut shell carbon (BC). The kinetic data of adsorption of Pb2+ and Cd2+ on MHBC were more in accordance with the pseudo-second order kinetic model, indicating that chemical adsorption played a dominant role, and the adsorption rate gradually tended to balance with a decrease in solution ion concentration. The isothermal thermodynamic data of the adsorption of Pb2+ and Cd2+ by MHBC conformed to the Langmuir model. At pH = 5.5, the maximum adsorption capacities of Pb2+ and Cd2+ were 160.41 mg·g−1 and 47.46 mg·g−1, respectively. Thermodynamic parameter fitting showed that the process of adsorption of Pb2+ and Cd2+ by MHBC is a spontaneous endothermic reaction. The higher the temperature is, the stronger the adsorption capacity is. When the ions coexist, Pb2+ and Cd2+ have obvious competitive adsorption, and Pb2+ has a significant competitive advantage. Among them, MHBC has high adsorption and good reusability for Pb2+ and Cd2+, and has good practical application prospects.

Abstract:The chitosan-modified biochars BC-CS 1-1, BC-CS 2-1 and BC-CS 4-1 were subjected to the synthetic application of biochar from agriculture waste and chitosan for the adsorption of Cu(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), Co(II) and Pb(II) ions from aqueous media. The results displayed a heterogeneous, well-developed surface. Additionally, the surface functional groups carboxyl, hydroxyl and phenol, determining the sorption mechanism and confirming the thermal stability of the materials, were present. The sorption evaluation was carried out as a function of the sorbent dose, pH, phase contact time, initial concentration of the solution and temperature. The maximum value of qt for Pb(II)-BC-CS 4-1, 32.23 mg/g (C0 200 mg/L, mass 0.1 g, pH 5, 360 min), was identified. Nitric acid was applied for the sorbent regeneration with a yield of 99.13% for Pb(II)-BC-CS 2-1. The produced sorbents can be used for the decontamination of water by means of the cost-effective and high-performance method.

Abstract:Hydrochars formed by hydrothermal carbonization of hickory wood, bamboo, and wheat straw at 200 °C were modified by potassium permanganate (KMnO 4 ) for the sorption of Pb(II), Cd(II), and Cu(II). The wheat straw hydrochar (WSHyC) modified with 0.2 M KMnO 4 resulted in the most promising adsorbent (WSHyC-0.2KMnO 4 ). Characterization of WSHyC and WSHyC-0.2KMnO 4 revealed that the modified hydrochar features large specific surface area, rich of surface oxygenic functional groups (OCFG), and a significant amount of MnOx micro-particles. Batch adsorption experiments indicated that the adsorption rate by WSHyC-0.2KMnO 4 was faster than for WSHyC, attaining equilibrium after around 5 h. The optimum adsorption capacity (Langmuir) of Pb(II), Cd(II), and Cu(II) by WSHyC-0.2KMnO 4 was 189.24, 29.06 and 32.68 mg/g, respectively, 12 ∼ 17 times greater than by WSHyC. The significantly enhanced heavy metal adsorption can be attributable to the increased OCFG and MnOx microparticles on the surface, thereby promoting ion exchange, electrostatic interactions, and complexation mechanisms.

Abstract:The purpose of this research was to improve the sorption ability of Pb and Cd by promoting the ion exchange and precipitation capacity of biochar. The adsorption performance and mechanisms of Pb and Cd in wastewater using coconut shell biochar modified with magnesium were investigated. After modification, the total adsorption capacity (Qt) of Pb and Cd on Mg-coated biochar (MgBC400) increased by 20 and 30 times compared with the unmodified biochar (BC400), respectively. The removal of Pb and Cd to biochar was attributed to ion exchange (Qe), mineral precipitation (Qp), interaction with oxygen functional groups (OFGs) [(Qf)], and metal-π electron coordination (Qπ). Compared with the BC400, the adsorption capacity of the four fractions of MgBC400 increased especially the ion exchange and precipitation. The Qe values of MgBC400 were almost 49 and 59 times that of BC400 in the adsorption of Pb and Cd, respectively. The Qp values of MgBC400 increased by 214.4 and 81.7 mg/g, respectively. Ion exchange and mineral precipitation dominated the adsorption of Pb and Cd by MgBC400.

Abstract:Lead (Pb) is a toxic heavy metal posing potential harm to the environment and human health. In this study, Pb(II) adsorption performance of co-pyrolysis biochar derived from sewage sludge and gypsum (CaSO 4 ) was first investigated. The anti-interference to environmental factors was investigated, with the underlying mechanisms being explored quantitatively. The maximum Pb(II) adsorption capacity of co-pyrolysis biochar (SSCB, 152.66 mg/g) was largely improved compared to single sewage sludge biochar (SSB, 29.95 mg/g) at a dosage of 1 g/L and initial pH of 6.0. Model analysis results indicated that monolayer sorption, chemisorption, intraparticle diffusion and endothermic processes were involved in the adsorption process. Among the tested co-existing ions, Fe 2+ and NH 4 + mostly disrupted the Pb(II) removal. Mineral precipitation (37.55%) and ion exchange (28.05%) were calculated as the major adsorption mechanisms (65.60%) for Pb(II) removal using co-pyrolysis biochar. SSCB showed better reusability for Pb(II) removal in 5 regeneration cycles. This work provides fundamental references for the utilization of solid wastes via co-pyrolysis to biochar for heavy metals removal towards sustainable development.

Abstract:Biochar has been widely used in the mitigation of soil potentially toxic metals due to its high efficiency and low cost. Crayfish shell biochar (CSBC) was prepared at 300, 500, and 700 °C (referred to as CS300, CS500, and CS700, respectively) and the performance and mechanism of CSBC for mitigating Pb polluted water and soil was investigated. The results indicated that CSBC prepared at higher temperatures possessed higher pH value and ash content, more abundant pore structure, and higher stability. Pb2+ adsorption onto CSBC fitted well with the pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion models. The maximum adsorption capacity of Pb2+ increased with the pyrolysis temperature, being 599.70 1114.53, and 1166.44 mg·g-1 for CS300, CS500 and CS700, respectively. Compared with the control soil samples, the content of available Pb after applying 0.05−5% CSBC was reduced by 1.87%−16.48% in acidic soils and 1.00%−11.09% in alkaline soils. Moreover, the fractionation of exchangeable Pb was converted to stable organic matter bound, Fe-Mn oxide bound, and residue fractions. XRD, SEM-EDS, and FTIR analysis showed that ion exchange, complexation, precipitation, and C−π interaction are the dominant interaction mechanisms. Therefore, CSBC can employ as an effective immobilizing agent for the mitigation of Pb contaminated water and soil.

Abstract:Nowadays lead pollution in water becomes more challenging since the emission of automobile exhaust dust and the wastewater of several lead-manufacture industries. In this study, piggery sludge was utilized to prepare biochar and modified with thiourea to achieve highly efficient wastewater Pb(II) removal. The physical-chemical properties of modified biochar (MBC) were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electric microscope (SEM), X-ray photo X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Zeta potential. Also adsorption isotherm and kinetics of MBC were studied to measure the adsorption capacity of Pb(II) onto biochar. According to the result, the maximum adsorption capacity can reach 145 mg/g and the adsorption reaction rate constants is about 0.0115 g/(mg∙h), which is about 5–8 times higher than that of biochar in other experiments. In order to investigate the mechanism of Pb(II) removal on MBC, FTIR and XPS analysis suggested that surface functional groups such as C–O, CO as well as CS, C–S and RSO3- introduced by modification can adsorb Pb(II) by coordination and ion-exchange. Thiourea modification provided additional functional groups so that modified biochar is able to perform better by chemical and physical adsorption.

Abstract:Herein, dithiocarbamate-modified biochar (BC-HDTC) was successfully synthesized with nitric acid (HNO3), thionyl chloride (SOCl2), branched PEI and carbon disulfide (CS2). The effective anchoring of amine and dithiocarbamate groups onto the surface of the biochar was proven by SEM, FTIR, XPS, N2 adsorption–desorption experiment. The batch experiments demonstrated BC-HDTC can selectively remove 98% Pb(II) within multi-metals solution when pH = 5, T = 30 °C. The impact of variations on the BC-HDTC were researched (pH, contact duration, Pb(II) original concentration).The sorption kinetics (pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, intra-particle diffusion model) and isotherm modeling (Langmuir, Freundlich, and tempkin models) of Pb(II) on BC-HDTC were investigated. The adsorption process was depicted to attain equilibrium in less than 20 min and to fit the Langmuir isotherms and pseudo-2nd-order kinetics satisfactorily. The complexation of functional groups of HDTC (amine/imine and dithiocarbamate) with Pb(II) as well as the ion exchange between Na(I) and Pb(II) are the main adsorption mechanisms. Pb(II) onto BC-HDTC was endothermic and spontaneous, according to thermodynamic parameters. After 4 consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, Pb removal efficiency of BC- HDTC remained over 90%. This work revealed the significant potential for Pb(II) contamination of BC-HDTC, a valuable and reusable adsorbent.

Abstract:This work explored two modification methods to improve biochar's ability to sorb arsenic (As) and lead (Pb). In one, pine wood feedstock was pyrolyzed in the presence of MnCl2·4H2O (MPB) and in the other it was impregnated with birnessite via precipitation following pyrolysis (BPB). The resulting biochars were characterized using thermogravimetry, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray analyses. The dominant crystalline forms of Mn oxides in the MPB and BPB were manganosite and birnessite, respectively. Batch sorption studies were carried out to determine the kinetics and magnitude of As(V) and Pb(II) onto the biochars. As(V) and Pb(II) sorption capacities of MPB (0.59 and 4.91 g/kg) and BPB (0.91 and 47.05 g/kg) were significantly higher than that of the unmodified biochar (0.20 and 2.35 g/kg). BPB showed the highest sorption enhancement because of the strong As(V) and Pb(II) affinity of its birnessite particles.
Study on the Adsorption of CuFe2O4-Loaded Corncob Biochar for Pb(II)

Abstract:A series of the magnetic CuFe2O4-loaded corncob biochar (CuFe2O4@CCBC) materials was obtained by combining the two-step impregnation of the corncob biochar with the pyrolysis of oxalate. CuFe2O4@CCBC and the pristine corncob biochar (CCBC) were characterized using XRD, SEM, VSM, BET, as well as pHZPC measurements. The results revealed that CuFe2O4 had a face-centered cubic crystalline phase and was homogeneously coated on the surface of CCBC. The as-prepared CuFe2O4@CCBC(5%) demonstrated a specific surface area of 74.98 m2·g−1, saturation magnetization of 5.75 emu·g−1 and pHZPC of 7.0. The adsorption dynamics and thermodynamic behavior of Pb(II) on CuFe2O4@CCBC and CCBC were investigated. The findings indicated that the pseudo-second kinetic and Langmuir equations suitably fitted the Pb(II) adsorption by CuFe2O4@CCBC or CCBC. At 30 °C and pH = 5.0, CuFe2O4@CCBC(5%) displayed an excellent performance in terms of the process rate and adsorption capacity towards Pb(II), for which the theoretical rate constant (k2) and maximum adsorption capacity (qm) were 7.68 × 10−3 g·mg−1··min−1 and 132.10 mg·g−1 separately, which were obviously higher than those of CCBC (4.38 × 10−3 g·mg−1·min−1 and 15.66 mg·g−1). The thermodynamic analyses exhibited that the adsorption reaction of the materials was endothermic and entropy-driven. The XPS and FTIR results revealed that the removal mechanism could be mainly attributed to the replacement of Pb2+ for H+ in Fe/Cu–OH and –COOH to form the inner surface complexes. Overall, the magnetic CuFe2O4-loaded biochar presents a high potential for use as an eco-friendly adsorbent to eliminate the heavy metals from the wastewater streams.

Abstract:Novel KMnO 4 -treated magnetic biochar (FMBC) was successfully synthesized by addition of Fe(NO 3 ) 3 during carbonization and KMnO 4 treatment following for Pb(II) and Cd(II) adsorption. SEM-EDS, XPS, and ICP-AES were used to evaluate the FMBC and magnetic biochar (FBC) on surface morphology, surface chemistry characteristics, surface functional groups, and Pb(II) and Cd(II) adsorption behavior. Results showed that the Langmuir maximum adsorption quantity of FMBC reached 148 mg/g for Pb(II) and 79 mg/g for Cd(II), nearly 7 times of that of FBC. The enhancement of FMBC for heavy metal adsorption was due to the successful load of manganese oxides and the increased oxygen functional groups consistent with XPS and FTIR results. The adsorption capacities of FMBC were maintained over 95% when the pH value was higher than 2.5 and 3.5 for Pb(II) and Cd(II), respectively. The adsorption performances of both heavy metals by FMBC were hardly influenced by ionic strength and humid acid. The adsorption capacities of FMBC could maintain over 50% and 87% after four cycles for Pb(II) and Cd(II), respectively. The saturation magnetization of FMBC was about 11.5 emu/g, which did not change after adsorption. This work proposed a new method to fabricate a magnetic biochar with high adsorption capacities of heavy metals Pb(II) and Cd(II).
Potassium Phosphate/magnesium Oxide Modified Biochars: Interfacial Chemical Behaviours and Pb Binding Performance.

Abstract:Removal of lead (Pb) from aqueous solutions by biochar is a promising method. In this study, wheat straw biochar(WBC) wasmodified by phosphate/magnesiumvia pre-treatment of biomass and post-treatment of biochar, noting asWBC_PMA andWBC_PMB, respectively. Based on Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses, phosphate/magnesium chemically bound to the structures of biochar surface, increasing the contents of polar groups (i.e., -COOH and -OH) and phosphorus-containing compounds, mainly Mg-3(PO4)(2) and Mg2P2O7. Owing to pyrolysis process enhancing loading ability of phosphate/magnesium, WBC_PMA possessed more active functional groups than WBC_PMB. Results showed that maximum sorption capacity of Pb was improved by modifications, following the sequence of WBC_PMA (470.09 mg/g) > WBC_PMB (308.39 mg/g) > WBC (59.93 mg/g). Pseudo-second-order kinetics and thermodynamics study indicated that chemisorption was involved in sorption process. Precipitation, complexation and cation exchange dominated Pb sorption and the corresponding contributions accounted for 17.89-32.73%, 28.84-46.22%, and 21.05-53.27%, respectively. Additionally, desorption characteristics of Pb illustrated thatWBC_PMA owned more prominent stabilization ability than that of WBC andWBC_PMB. The findings of this study suggested that pre-modification method increased the contents of active groups in biochar and strengthened the removal efficiency of Pb ultimately. Due to the complexity of the actual Pb-containing wastewater environment, it was necessary to evaluate the effects of various factors on the stabilization performance of the pre-modified biochar in further. Abstract:For the serious situation of heavy metal pollution, the use of cheap, clean, and efficient biochar to immobilize heavy metals is a good treatment method. In this paper, SA@ZIF-8/BC was prepared for the adsorption of Pb 2+ in solution using sodium alginate (SA) and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) modified corn cob biochar. The results showed that the specific surface area of modified biochar was greatly improved, with good adsorption capacity for Pb 2+ , strong anti-interference ability, and good economy. At the optimal adsorption pH of 5, the adsorption model of Pb 2+ by SA@ZIF-8/BC was more consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. This indicates that the adsorption of Pb 2+ by SA@ZIF-8/BC is chemisorption and monolayer adsorption. The maximum adsorption of modified biochar was 300 mg g −1 , which was 2.38 times higher than that of before modified BC (126 mg g −1 ). The shift in binding energy of functional groups before and after adsorption of SA@ZIF-8/BC was studied by XPS, and it was found that hydroxyl and carboxyl groups played an important role in the adsorption of Pb 2+ . It was demonstrated that this novel adsorbent can be effectively used for the treatment of Pb pollution in wastewater.

Unraveling Sorption of Lead in Aqueous Solutions by Chemically Modified Biochar Derived from Coconut Fiber: A Microscopic and Spectroscopic Investigation.

Abstract:In this study, we examined the efficacy of nine different types of coconut-fiber derived biochars (CFBs), prepared at different temperatures and chemically modified with ammonia, hydrogen peroxide and nitric acid, to remove lead (Pb2+) from aqueous solutions. Langmuir-qm values of the biochars pyrolyzed at 300°C and modified with ammonia and nitric acid increased from 49.5 to 105.5 and 85.2mgg-1, respectively, compared to control (unmodified), whereas hydrogen peroxide treatment had no effect. The maximum amount of Pb adsorbed on biochars was in the order of CFB-700>MCFB-300-NH3·H2O>CFB-500>MCFB-300-HNO3>CFB-300. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy results revealed that Pb-montmorillonite, Pb(C2H3O2)2, PbSO4, Pb-Al2O3 and Pb3(PO4)2 were the five most important Pb species observed in Pb-loaded biochars, and as such, favoring Pb immobilization in aqueous solutions. Overall, the sorption capacity of CFBs pyrolyzed at 300°C substantially increased for Pb2+ with ammonia and nitric acid modification. However, these chemical modifications did not improve the sorption of Pb on CFBs pyrolyzed at temperatures ≥500°C, thereby highlighting a temperature dependent response of chemically modified biochars to Pb sorption in this study.
Mn-embedded biochar for enhanced removal of Cd(II), Pb(II) and Ni(II): Physicochemical properties, high-efficiency adsorption capacities and quantitative mechanism analysis

Abstract:Heavy metals (HMs) in wastewater, including Cd, Pb and Ni, were toxic and needed urgent treatment. Using biochar as an adsorbent to purify HM-containing wastewater is effective. However, there are few studies on screening of high-efficiency modifier and comparing their adsorption capacity. Herein, three different modification methods, including heteroatomic doping (urea), alkali hydroxide (NaOH) and chemical oxidation (KMnO 4 ), were used to improve removal ability of HMs by biochar. The difference in impregnation solution resulted in completely differences in microscopic morphology, physicochemical properties and adsorption efficiency of modified biochar. Biochar modified by KMnO 4 (Mn-BC) had significantly better adsorption capacity for Cd, Pb and Ni, reaching 46.40 mg/g, 80.20 mg/g and 18.65 mg/g, respectively, compared with raw biochar and other modification biochar, which might be due to the highest surface area and pore volume, lower zeta potential and loaded MnO x onto Mn-BC surface. Chemical and monolayer adsorption was dominant during adsorption of HMs. After adsorption, HMs were detected on the Mn-BC surface in the form of carbonate, hydroxide or oxide. Mineral precipitation and cation exchange were the dominant mechanisms during adsorption, accounting for 17.4%-41.8% and 43.0%-77.2%, respectively. Moreover, according to the correlation analysis, the increase in biochar pH, pore volume and degrees of carbonization were beneficial for HM adsorption. Mn-BC could adapt to a wider pH range (pH=4–6), and its adsorption capacity would not be interfered by coexisting ions (50 mg/L). This research proved advantages of biochar with KMnO 4 modification and highlighted its application in treatment of wastewater contaminated with multiple HMs.

Abstract:Biochar adsorption of heavy metals has been a research hotspot, yet there has been limited reports on the effect of heavy metal interactions on adsorption efficiency in complex systems. In this study, the adsorbent was prepared by pyrolysis of rice straw loaded with manganese (BC-Mn). The interactions of Pb, Cd and As adsorption on BC-Mn were systematically studied. The results of the adsorption isotherms for the binary metal system revealed a competitive adsorption between Pb and Cd, resulting in decreased Pb (from 214.38 mg/g to 148.20 mg/g) and Cd (from 165.73 mg/g to 92.11 mg/g). A notable promotion occurred between As and Cd, showing an increase from 234.93 mg/g to 305.00 mg/g for As and 165.73 mg/g to 313.94 mg/g for Cd. In the ternary metal system, Pb inhibition did not counteract the promotion of Cd and As. Furthermore, the Langmuir isotherm effectively described BC-Mn's adsorption process in monometallic, binary, and ternary metal systems (R 2 > 0.9294). Zeta and FTIR analyses revealed simultaneous competition between Pb and Cd for adsorption on BC-Mn's -OH sites. XPS analysis revealed that As adsorption by BC-Mn facilitated the conversion of MnO 2 and MnO to MnOOH, resulting in increased hydroxyl radical production on BC-Mn's surface. Simultaneously, Cd combined with the adsorbed As to form ternary Cd-As-Mn complexes, which expedited the removal of Cd. These results help to provide theoretical support as well as technical support for the treatment of Pb–Cd-As contaminated wastewater.

Abstract:In this study, adsorption experiments on Cd(II) ions in aqueous solution by biochars pyrolyzed from millet bran (MBBC) at 400~800 °C were carried out and MBBC had superior adsorption performance at pyrolysis temperature of 600~800 °C. Then, biochars were modified by potassium permanganate (MBBC-PP), potassium ferrate (MBBC-PF), and citric acid (MBBC-CA). The results showed that the adsorption capacities of these adsorbents were in the order: MBBC-PP > MBBC-PF > MBBC-CA > MBBC. FT-IR, XRD, and Raman were used to determine the characteristics of biochars and explore the main adsorption mechanism causing by modification. These characterizations confirmed that manganese oxide and iron oxide particles were loaded on the surface of MBBC-PP and MBBC-PF, respectively. For MBBC-PP and MBBC-PF, the adsorption sites generated by the loaded metal oxides play more important role than other factors in Cd(II) adsorption. For MBBC-CA, surface functional groups were the main contributor during Cd(II) adsorption. Batch adsorption experiments demonstrate a Langmuir model fit for Cd(II). The sorption kinetics of Cd(II) on adsorbents follows pseudo-second-order kinetics. Modified biochars, especially the one modified by KMnO4, could act as effective alternatives to enhance heavy metals removal from aqueous solutions.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between Pb2+ adsorption and physicochemical properties of biochars produced at different pyrolytic temperatures. Ten biochars were prepared from peanut shell (PS) and Chinese medicine material residue (MR) at 300-600 degrees C. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms were determined, and the untreated and Pb2+-loaded biochars were analyzed by FTIR, SEM-EDX and XRD. Functional groups complexation, Pb2+-pi interaction and precipitation with minerals jointly contributed to Pb2+ adsorption on these biochars. New mineral precipitates (e.g., Pb-2(SO4)O and Pb-4(CO3)(2)(SO4)(OH)(2)) formed during Pb2+ sorption. For high-temperature biochars (>= 500 degrees C), Pb2+ sorption via complexation reduced, but the contribution of Pb2+-pi interaction was enhanced. Dramatic reduction of Pb2+ sorption on demineralized biochars indicated the dominant role of minerals. These results are useful for screening effective biochars as engineered sorbents to remove or immobilize Pb2+ in polluted water and soil. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Mechanism Study on the Immobilization of Cu2+/Pb2+ in Aqueous Phase by Mineral Co-Milling-Modified Biochar

Abstract:A large number of studies have shown that the modification of biochar can greatly improve its adsorption capacity. This study adopts a one-step ball milling technology without solvent medium, using sawdust biochar (600 °C) and attapulgite/diatomaceous earth to prepare MABC10%/MDBC10% (mass ratio: 10% attapulgite/diatomite +90% biochar coabrasive). Characterization experiments show that attapulgite/diatomite was successfully loaded on biochar and has more C/O functional groups and wider adsorption pore sizes. Adsorption kinetics and isotherm experiments show that the adsorption process of MABC10% and MDBC10% on Cu2+/Pb2+ was mainly multilayer chemical adsorption. The adsorption capacities of MABC10% and MDBC10% for Cu2+ were 40.85 and 65.20 mg·L-1, respectively. The adsorption amounts of Pb2+ were 82.63 and 71.32 mg·L-1, respectively. The particle diffusion model shows that the adsorption process was controlled by both the surface adsorption rate limitation and boundary layer diffusion. The higher acidity in the solution will cause part of the negative charges on the surface of attapulgite/diatomite to be neutralized, thereby hindering its adsorption of Cu2+/Pb2+. The presence of coexisting ions did not significantly affect the adsorption performance. Mechanistic studies have shown that pore diffusion, active sites provided by C/O functional groups, electrostatic interactions, and cation exchange are the main mechanisms of MABC10% adsorption of Cu2+/Pb2+. In summary, MABC10% has a significant adsorption synergistic effect compared to MBC. It was an economical and effective adsorbent, and the higher the pH value of the wastewater, the more significant the adsorption effect.
