Abstract:AI and deep learning are two recent innovations that have made a big difference in helping to solve problems in the clinical space. Using clinical imaging and sound examination, they also work on improving their vision so that they can spot diseases early and correctly. Because there aren't enough trained HR, clinical professionals are asking for help with innovation because it helps them adapt to more patients. Aside from serious health problems like cancer and diabetes, the effects of respiratory infections are also slowly getting worse and becoming dangerous for society. Respiratory diseases need to be found early and treated quickly, so listening to the sounds of the lungs is proving to be a very helpful tool along with chest X-rays. The presented research hopes to use deep learning ideas based on Convolutional Brain Organization to help clinical specialists by giving a detailed and thorough analysis of clinical respiratory sound data for Ongoing Obstructive Pneumonic identification. We used MFCC, Mel-Spectrogram, Chroma, Chroma (Steady Q), and Chroma CENS from the Librosa AI library in the tests we ran. The new system could also figure out how serious the infection was, whether it was mild, moderate, or severe. The test results agree with the outcome of the deep learning approach that was proposed. The accuracy of the framework arrangement has been raised to a score of 96% on the ICBHI. Also, in the led tests, we used K-Crisp Cross-Approval with ten parts to make the presentation of the new deep learning approach easier to understand. With a 96 percent accuracy rate, the suggested network is better than the rest. If you don't use cross-validation, the model is 90% accurate.

Abstract:Respiratory diseases are among the most common causes of severe illness and death worldwide. Prevention and early diagnosis are essential to limit or even reverse the trend that characterizes the diffusion of such diseases. In this regard, the development of advanced computational tools for the analysis of respiratory auscultation sounds can become a game changer for detecting disease-related anomalies, or diseases themselves. In this work, we propose a novel learning framework for respiratory auscultation sound data. Our approach combines state-of-the-art feature extraction techniques and advanced deep-neural-network architectures. Remarkably, to the best of our knowledge, we are the first to model a recurrent-neural-network based learning framework to support the clinician in detecting respiratory diseases, at either level of abnormal sounds or pathology classes. Results obtained on the ICBHI benchmark dataset show that our approach outperforms competing methods on both anomaly-driven and pathology-driven prediction tasks, thus advancing the state-of-the-art in respiratory disease analysis.
PERSONALITY TRAITS AND PERCEIVED USABILITY EVALUATION OF E-LEARNING PLATFORMS: A CASE STUDY

Abstract:The impact of individuals’ characteristics on the perceived usability of e-learning systems is a significant, but rather overlooked topic. The goal of this research is to investigate the relation between teachers’ personality traits and their perceived usability of the e-class platform using the System Usability Scale (SUS) and the Big 5 Personality test. 1324 teachers of primary and secondary education in Greece participated in the study. Results indicated satisfactory usability levels for the e-class (M=69.68, SD=15.24). Moreover, SUS scores found to be correlated with teachers’ ICT in education competency and educational stage. Furthermore, secondary school teachers and teachers holding a PhD or a master’s degree rated significantly higher than the primary school teachers and teachers holding only BSc or high school diploma, respectively. However, SUS score was not correlated with age, gender, work experience, private/public school, work relationship (tenured or not) and general ICT competency. Finally, all five personality traits (Extraversion, Conscientiousness, Openness to new experience, Emotional stability, Agreeableness) found to be significantly positive correlated with perceived usability of the e-class platform.

Abstract:Machine learning algorithms have recently been increasingly used in medical data, particularly in healthcare areas where image processing techniques have played a crucial role. This study aims to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to forecast respiratory diseases by implementing a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) structure. The study employs an extensive dataset, specifically the Public Breathing Sound Database, which includes breathing sounds from 126 individuals with six different respiratory disorders. Furthermore, the main aim of this study is to tackle the difficulties related to the precise detection of lung disorders by creating a strong and effective model. The study examines the intricacies of pre-processing audio data, augmenting it, and extracting information from it. The primary focus is the utilization of Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) to identify significant characteristics of respiratory sounds. The suggested methodology utilizes a deep CNN structure to analyze retrieved characteristics and accurately identify diseases by detecting patterns and correlations. Moreover, the outcomes demonstrate a significant improvement in the precision of the model following the implementation of data balancing and augmentation strategies. The created model obtains a remarkable accuracy of 97.4% on the validation dataset, showcasing its effectiveness in training. Furthermore, it maintains a high accuracy of 95.1% on the independent test dataset. This research adds to the expanding collection of studies at the crossroads of AI and healthcare and shows great potential for promptly and precisely detecting respiratory disorders using acoustic signals. The results highlight the capacity of deep learning methods to transform diagnostic procedures in respiratory healthcare fundamentally.

Abstract:With the development of computer -systems that can collect and analyze enormous volumes of data, the medical profession is establishing several non-invasive tools. This work attempts to develop a non-invasive technique for identifying respiratory sounds acquired by a stethoscope and voice recording software via machine learning techniques. This study suggests a trained and proven CNN-based approach for categorizing respiratory sounds. A visual representation of each audio sample is constructed, allowing resource identification for classification using methods like those used to effectively describe visuals. We used a technique called Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs). Here, features are retrieved and categorized via VGG16 (transfer learning) and prediction is accomplished using 5-fold cross-validation. Employing various data splitting techniques, Respiratory Sound Database obtained cutting-edge results, including accuracy of 95%, precision of 88%, recall score of 86%, and F1 score of 81%. The ICBHI dataset is used to train and test the model.

Towards reliable respiratory disease diagnosis based on cough sounds and vision transformers

Abstract:Recent advancements in deep learning techniques have sparked performance boosts in various real-world applications including disease diagnosis based on multi-modal medical data. Cough sound data-based respiratory disease (e.g., COVID-19 and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) diagnosis has also attracted much attention. However, existing works usually utilise traditional machine learning or deep models of moderate scales. On the other hand, the developed approaches are trained and evaluated on small-scale data due to the difficulty of curating and annotating clinical data on scale. To address these issues in prior works, we create a unified framework to evaluate various deep models from lightweight Convolutional Neural Networks (e.g., ResNet18) to modern vision transformers and compare their performance in respiratory disease classification. Based on the observations from such an extensive empirical study, we propose a novel approach to cough-based disease classification based on both self-supervised and supervised learning on a large-scale cough data set. Experimental results demonstrate our proposed approach outperforms prior arts consistently on two benchmark datasets for COVID-19 diagnosis and a proprietary dataset for COPD/non-COPD classification with an AUROC of 92.5%.

Enhancing Medical Diagnosis with AI: A Focus on Respiratory Disease Detection

Abstract:Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing medical diagnosis and healthcare, providing constant support to medical practitioners. Intelligent systems alleviate workload pressure while optimizing practitioner performance. AI and deep learning have also improved medical imaging and audio analysis. Material and methods: This research focuses on predicting respiratory diseases using audio recordings from an electronic stethoscope. A convolutional neural network (CNN) was trained on a Respiratory Sound Database, augmented to generate 1,428 audio files. Techniques such as pitch shifting, time stretching, noise addition, time and frequency masking, dynamic range compression, and resampling were employed to increase the diversity and size of the training data. Result: Features were extracted from mono audio files, creating a four layer CNN with 90% accuracy. The software, developed using the CNN model and Streamlit python library, offers a new tool for early and accurate diagnosis, reducing the burden on medical practitioners and enhanci ng their performance. The study highlights AI's potential in respiratory disease detection through audio analysis. Abstract:Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) concerns the serious decline of human lung functions. These have emerged as one of the most concerning health conditions over the last two decades, after cancer around the world. The early diagnosis of COPD, particularly of lung function degradation, together with monitoring the condition by physicians, and predicting the likelihood of exacerbation events in individual patients, remains an important challenge to overcome. The requirements for achieving scalable deployments of data-driven methods using artificial intelligence for meeting such a challenge in modern COPD healthcare have become of paramount and critical importance. In this study, we have established the experimental foundations for acquiring and indeed generating biomedical observation data, for good performance signal analysis and machine learning that will lead us to the intelligent diagnosis and monitoring of COPD conditions for individual patients. Further, we investigated on the multi-resolution analysis and compression of lung audio signals, while we performed their machine classification under two distinct experiments. These respectively refer to conditions involving (1) "Healthy" or "COPD" and (2) "Healthy", "COPD", or "Pneumonia" classes. Signal reconstruction with the extracted features for machine learning and testing was also performed for securing the integrity of the original audio recordings. These showed high levels of accuracy together with the performances of the selected machine learning-based classifiers using diverse metrics. Our study shows promising levels of accuracy in classifying Healthy and COPD and also Healthy, COPD, and Pneumonia conditions. Further work in this study will be imminently extended to new experiments using multi-modal sensing hardware and data fusion techniques for the development of the next generation diagnosis systems for COPD healthcare of the future.
Lung anomaly detection from respiratory sound database (sound signals)

Abstract:Chest or upper body auscultation has long been considered a useful part of the physical examination going back to the time of Hippocrates. However, it did not become a prevalent practice until the invention of the stethoscope by Rene Laennec in 1816, which made the practice suitable and hygienic. Pulmonary disease is a kind of sickness that affects the lungs and various parts of the respiratory system. Lung diseases are the third largest cause of death in the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the five major respiratory diseases, namely chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), tuberculosis, acute lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI), asthma, and lung cancer, cause the death of more than 3 million people each year worldwide. Respiratory sounds disclose significant information regarding the lungs of patients. Numerous methods are developed for analyzing the lung sounds. However, clinical approaches require qualified pulmonologists to diagnose such kind of signals appropriately and are also time consuming. Hence, an efficient Fractional Water Cycle Swarm Optimizer-based Deep Residual Network (Fr-WCSO-based DRN) is developed in this research for detecting the pulmonary abnormalities using respiratory sounds signals. The proposed Fr-WCSO is newly designed by the incorporation of Fractional Calculus (FC) and Water Cycle Swarm Optimizer WCSO. Meanwhile, WCSO is the combination of Water Cycle Algorithm (WCA) with Competitive Swarm Optimizer (CSO). The respiratory input sound signals are pre-processed and the important features needed for the further processing are effectively extracted. With the extracted features, data augmentation is carried out for minimizing the over fitting issues for improving the overall detection performance. Once data augmentation is done, feature selection is performed using proposed Fr-WCSO algorithm. Finally, pulmonary abnormality detection is performed using DRN where the training procedure of DRN is performed using the developed Fr-WCSO algorithm. The developed method achieved superior performance by considering the evaluation measures, namely True Positive Rate (TPR), True Negative Rate (TNR) and testing accuracy with the values of 0.963(96.3%), 0.932,(93.2%) and 0.948(94.8%), respectively.
Classification of pulmonary sounds through deep learning for the diagnosis of interstitial lung diseases secondary to connective tissue diseases

Abstract:Early diagnosis of interstitial lung diseases secondary to connective tissue diseases is critical for the treatment and survival of patients. The symptoms, like dry cough and dyspnea, appear late in the clinical history and are not specific, moreover, the current approach to confirm the diagnosis of interstitial lung disease is based on high resolution computer tomography. However, computer tomography involves x-ray exposure for patients and high costs for the Health System, therefore preventing its use for a massive screening campaign in elder people. In this work we investigate the use of deep learning techniques for the classification of pulmonary sounds acquired from patients affected by connective tissue diseases. The novelty of the work consists of a suitably developed pre-processing pipeline for de-noising and data augmentation. The proposed approach is combined with a clinical study where the ground truth is represented by high resolution computer tomography. Various convolutional neural networks have provided an overall accuracy as high as 91% in the classification of lung sounds and have led to an overwhelming diagnostic accuracy in the range 91%-93%. Modern high performance hardware for edge computing can easily support our algorithms. This solution paves the way for a vast screening campaign of interstitial lung diseases in elder people on the basis of a non-invasive and cheap thoracic auscultation.
Exploring classical machine learning for identification of pathological lung auscultations

Abstract:The use of machine learning in biomedical research has surged in recent years thanks to advances in devices and artificial intelligence. Our aim is to expand this body of knowledge by applying machine learning to pulmonary auscultation signals. Despite improvements in digital stethoscopes and attempts to find synergy between them and artificial intelligence, solutions for their use in clinical settings remain scarce. Physicians continue to infer initial diagnoses with less sophisticated means, resulting in low accuracy, leading to suboptimal patient care. To arrive at a correct preliminary diagnosis, the auscultation diagnostics need to be of high accuracy. Due to the large number of auscultations performed, data availability opens up opportunities for more effective sound analysis. In this study, digital 6-channel auscultations of 45 patients were used in various machine learning scenarios, with the aim of distinguishing between normal and abnormal pulmonary sounds. Audio features (such as fundamental frequencies F0-4, loudness, HNR, DFA, as well as descriptive statistics of log energy, RMS and MFCC) were extracted using the Python library Surfboard. Windowing, feature aggregation, and concatenation strategies were used to prepare data for machine learning algorithms in unsupervised (fair-cut forest, outlier forest) and supervised (random forest, regularized logistic regression) settings. The evaluation was carried out using 9-fold stratified cross-validation repeated 30 times. Decision fusion by averaging the outputs for a subject was also tested and found to be helpful. Supervised models showed a consistent advantage over unsupervised ones, with random forest achieving a mean AUC ROC of 0.691 (accuracy 71.11%, Kappa 0.416, F1-score 0.675) in side-based detection and a mean AUC ROC of 0.721 (accuracy 68.89%, Kappa 0.371, F1-score 0.650) in patient-based detection.
Respiratory Disease Classification and Biometric Analysis Using Biosignals from Digital Stethoscopes

Abstract:Respiratory diseases remain a leading cause of mortality worldwide, highlighting the need for faster and more accurate diagnostic tools. This work presents a novel approach leveraging digital stethoscope technology for automatic respiratory disease classification and biometric analysis. Our approach has the potential to significantly enhance traditional auscultation practices. By leveraging one of the largest publicly available medical database of respiratory sounds, we train machine learning models to classify various respiratory health conditions. Our method differs from conventional methods by using Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and spectral analysis techniques to isolate clinically relevant biosignals embedded within acoustic data captured by digital stethoscopes. This approach focuses on information closely tied to cardiovascular and respiratory patterns within the acoustic data. Spectral analysis and filtering techniques isolate Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs) strongly correlated with these physiological phenomena. These biosignals undergo a comprehensive feature extraction process for predictive modeling. These features then serve as input to train several machine learning models for both classification and regression tasks. Our approach achieves high accuracy in both binary classification (89% balanced accuracy for healthy vs. diseased) and multi-class classification (72% balanced accuracy for specific diseases like pneumonia and COPD). For the first time, this work introduces regression models capable of estimating age and body mass index (BMI) based solely on acoustic data, as well as a model for sex classification. Our findings underscore the potential of intelligent digital stethoscopes to significantly enhance assistive and remote diagnostic capabilities, contributing to advancements in digital health, telehealth, and remote patient monitoring.

Abstract:One of the major causes of deaths worldwide is the pulmonary diseases. There is an increasing need for an efficient technique that can automatically diagnose these diseases with high accuracy. In this paper, we propose a deep learning architecture to automatically detect pulmonary diseases. The raw pulmonary sound signals are taken from two popular datasets: ICBHI and KAUH datasets. These signals have diverse sampling frequencies of 4 kHz, 10 kHz or 44.1 kHz. The signals from KAUH dataset have a duration of minimum 5 s, while ICBHI signals have a duration of 10 to 90 s. These signals undergo pre-processing, which involves re-sampling them to a common 4 kHz frequency, and segmenting them into frames lasting 3 s. The frames are then normalized and passed to the proposed EasyNet model for training and classification. The EasyNet architecture contains only two convolution layers, which reduces the model complexity. The model’s performance is analyzed for both binary detection as well as multi-class detection. Our method performs well in all the considered evaluation scenarios, and yields an accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of 1.0 for the KAUH dataset, while for the ICBHI dataset, an accuracy of 0.997, sensitivity of 0.999, and specificity of 0.997 is achieved. For the combined dataset, we have achieved an accuracy of 0.998, with a sensitivity and specificity of 0.999. These values are better than the existing state-of-the-art methods. The proposed architecture is quite simple yet effective in detecting lung diseases.

Abstract:This article investigates the classification of normal and COPD subjects on the basis of respiratory sound analysis using machine learning techniques. Thirty COPD and 25 healthy subject data are recorded. Total of 39 lung sound features and 3 spirometry features are extracted and evaluated. Various parametric and nonparametric tests are conducted to evaluate the relevance of extracted features. Classifiers such as support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), logistic regression (LR), decision tree and discriminant analysis (DA) are used to categorize normal and COPD breath sounds. Classification based on spirometry parameters as well as respiratory sound parameters are assessed. Maximum classification accuracy of 83.6% is achieved by the SVM classifier while using the most relevant lung sound parameters i.e. median frequency and linear predictive coefficients. Further, SVM classifier and LR classifier achieved classification accuracy of 100% when relevant lung sound parameters, i.e. median frequency and linear predictive coefficient are combined with the spirometry parameters, i.e. forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV<sub>1</sub>). It is concluded that combining lung sound based features with spirometry data can improve the accuracy of COPD diagnosis and hence the clinician's performance in routine clinical practice. The proposed approach is of great significance in a clinical scenario wherein it can be used to assist clinicians for automated COPD diagnosis. A complete handheld medical system can be developed in the future incorporating lung sounds for COPD diagnosis using machine learning techniques.

Abstract:Respiratory disorders are commonly regarded as complex disorders to diagnose due to their multi-factorial nature, encompassing the interplay between hereditary variables, comorbidities, environmental exposures, and therapies, among other contributing factors. This study presents a Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) for the early detection of respiratory disorders using a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) model. The ICBHI 2017 Breathing Sound Database, which contains samples of different breathing sounds, was used in this research. During pre-processing, audio clips were resampled to a uniform rate, and breathing cycles were segmented into individual instances of the lung sound. A One-Dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (1D-CNN) consisting of convolutional layers, max pooling layers, dropout layers, and fully connected layers, was designed to classify the processed clips into four categories: normal, crackles, wheezes, and combined crackles and wheezes. To address class imbalance, the Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE) was applied to the training data. Hyperparameters were optimized using grid search with k−fold cross-validation. The model achieved an overall accuracy of 0.95, outperforming state-of-the-art methods. Particularly, the normal and crackles categories attained the highest F1-scores of 0.97 and 0.95, respectively. The model's robustness was further validated through 5−fold and 10−fold cross-validation experiments. This research highlighted an essential aspect of diagnosing lung sounds through artificial intelligence and utilized the 1D-CNN to classify lung sounds accurately. The proposed advancement of technology shall enable medical care practitioners to diagnose lung disorders in an improved manner, leading to better patient care.

This study is focused on efficient diagnosis of three very common diseases: lung cancer, pneumonia and Covid-19 using X-ray images. Methods: Three different deep learning models are designed and developed to perform 4-way classification. Inception V3, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Long Short Term Memory models (LSTM) are used as building blocks. The performance of these models is evaluated using three publicly available datasets, the first dataset contains images for Lung cancer, second contains images for Covid-19 and third dataset contains images for Pneumonia and normal subjects. Combining three datasets creates a class imbalance problem which is resolved using pre-processing and data augmentation techniques. After data augmentation 1386 subjects are randomly chosen for each class. Results: It is observed that CNN when combined with LSTM (CNN-LSTM) produces significantly improved results (accuracy of 94.5 %) which is better than CNN and InceptionV3-LSTM. 3,5, and 10 fold cross validation is performed to verify all results calculated using three different classifiersConclusions:This research concludes that a single computer-aided diagnosis system can be developed for diagnosing multiple diseases.

Abstract:This paper presents a robust deep learning framework developed to detect respiratory diseases from recordings of respiratory sounds. The complete detection process firstly involves front end feature extraction where recordings are transformed into spectrograms that convey both spectral and temporal information. Then a back-end deep learning model classifies the features into classes of respiratory disease or anomaly. Experiments, conducted over the ICBHI benchmark dataset of respiratory sounds, evaluate the ability of the framework to classify sounds. Two main contributions are made in this paper. Firstly, we provide an extensive analysis of how factors such as respiratory cycle length, time resolution, and network architecture, affect final prediction accuracy. Secondly, a novel deep learning based framework is proposed for detection of respiratory diseases and shown to perform extremely well compared to state of the art methods.

Abstract:Every respiratory-related checkup includes audio samples collected from the individual, collected through different tools (sonograph, stethoscope). This audio is analyzed to identify pathology, which requires time and effort. The research work proposed in this paper aims at easing the task with deep learning by the diagnosis of lung-related pathologies using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with the help of transformed features from the audio samples. International Conference on Biomedical and Health Informatics (ICBHI) corpus dataset was used for lung sound. Here a novel approach is proposed to pre-process the data and pass it through a newly proposed CNN architecture. The combination of pre-processing steps MFCC, Melspectrogram, and Chroma CENS with CNN improvise the performance of the proposed system, which helps to make an accurate diagnosis of lung sounds. The comparative analysis shows how the proposed approach performs better with previous state-of-the-art research approaches. It also shows that there is no need for a wheeze or a crackle to be present in the lung sound to carry out the classification of respiratory pathologies.

Abstract:Improving access to health care services for the medically under-served population is vital to ensure that critical illness can be addressed immediately. In the scenarios where there is a severely lacking of skilled medical staff, a basic lung sound classification through a digital stethoscope can be used to provide an immediate diagnostic for respiratory-related diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary. In this work, we have developed an improved bi-ResNet deep learning architecture, LungBRN, which uses STFT and wavelet feature extraction techniques to improve the accuracy compared to the state-of-the-art works. To ensure a fair evaluation, we have adopted the official benchmark standards and the "train-and-test" dataset splitting method stated in the ICBHI 2017 challenge. As a result, we are able to achieve a performance of 50.16%, which is the best result in terms of accuracy compared to all participating teams from ICBHI 2017.
