Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To evaluate macular choroidal thickness (CT) and retinal thickness in Turkish patients with high myopia without maculopathy and in normal subjects and to examine the association with age, axial length (AL), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), cycloplegic refraction, and spherical equivalent (SE).METHODS: This prospective study was performed between January 2015 and June 2016 in the Department of Ophthalmology, Duzce University Medical Faculty. It had 65 individuals (30 patients with high myopia, 35 healthy subjects). Retinal and choroidal images were obtained using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT). Measurements (one subfoveal, three temporal, three nasal) were taken at 500 μm intervals up to 1,500 μm using the caliper system. Only the right eye was used for subsequent analysis.RESULTS: The mean age was 29.5 ± 14.5 years and 25.6 ± 7.0 in the high myopia and control groups, respectively. The subfoveal CT was significantly lower in the high myopia group (mean, 218.3 ± 102.25 mm) than the control group (mean, 331.83 ± 99.06 mm; p < 0.001). In both groups, the choroid was thinnest at the nasal 1,500 μm location, being 158.40 ± 90.8 μm and 301 ± 103.59 μm, respectively. Retinal thickness in both groups was thickest at the nasal 1,500 μm location and thinnest in the subfoveal region. In patients with high myopia, CT was negatively correlated with AL (r=-0.490, p=0.006) and age (r=-0.455, p=0.012).CONCLUSIONS: Highly myopic eyes have a thinner choroid, which may be secondary to longer AL but is not an independent factor. Further studies in the field of OCT are important to exploring the pathology of high myopia.

Abstract:Ultra-wide-field optical coherence tomography (UWF-OCT) has been recently introduced into clinical ophthalmological practice. To date, there are few data on the reference values of the retinal thickness (RT) and choroidal thickness (CT) measured with this technique. This study aimed to analyze the variance in RT and CT in the healthy eyes of white Caucasian patients with UWF-OCT tests performed with the largest available scan size of 23 × 20 mm. The data were analyzed with reference to the patients' age and gender and the axial length of the eyeball. The results of UWF-OCT scanning enabled us to visualize the shape of the retina and choroid in a large portion of the eyeball. Both anatomical entities became significantly thinner at the periphery. The peripheral CT was greater in the upper and temporal sectors; the RT was higher in the nasal compared to the temporal sectors. Both the choroid and retina showed a reduced thickness with age; however, the CT and RT did not show a statistically significant correlation with the axial length after adjusting for age and gender. Age-related variations in thickness were especially prominent in the choroid. The CT in UWF-OCT testing was significantly greater in females, while the RT was greater in males. UWF-OCT testing provides additional information on the anatomical structure of the retina and choroid compared to standard-field OCT.

Evaluation of macular microcirculation in healthy children using optical coherence tomography angiography

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to evaluate macular perfusion in a healthy pediatric population using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA).METHODS: Fifty-three eyes of 30 healthy children (20 boys and 10 girls) were included in this prospective, cross-sectional study. Age, gender, foveal thickness (FT), superficial foveal avascular zone area (FAZs), deep foveal avascular zone area (FAZd), superficial capillary plexus flow area (SCP), deep capillary plexus flow area (DCP), choriocapillaris flow area (CC), vascular density in the SCP (VDs), vascular density in the DCP (VDd), and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) were evaluated.RESULTS: The mean age was 12.0±4.0 years (range: 6-15 years). Gender did not have a statistically significant influence on the FAZs or FAZd. However, there was a positive correlation between the CC and age (r=0.31; p=0.025). The FAZs and FAZd were negatively correlated with the FT (p<0.001). The VDd was positively correlated with the FT (p=0.03) and was negatively correlated with the FAZd (p=0.019).CONCLUSION: The present study determined normative data of OCTA parameters in healthy children and provides useful insight into the relationship between age, macular microvascular networks, and the FAZ.

Abstract:Abstract Purpose To report normal values of macular and choroidal thickness obtained from a healthy Hispanic population using Optovue (Optovue Inc, Freemont CA, USA) spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Design Observational, cross-sectional, correlation study. Methods A total of 290 eyes (145 healthy subjects) were included; 69% of subjects were female. The median age was 39 ± 29 years (IQR), with a range between 18 and 89 years. The study sample was stratified into three age groups: Group 1, 18–40 years (50.3%), Group 2, 41–60 years (30.7%), and Group 3, older than 61 years (19%). Central macular, perifoveal (inner quadrants), and parafoveal (outer quadrants) thicknesses were estimated. In addition, central and peripheral choroidal thicknesses were estimated. Data analysis was performed to calculate the standardized mean difference according to the variance (Student’s t -test) and its differences with Epidat 4.1. Results Median macular central thickness was 250 ±30 μm (IQR) with Optovue. Median central choroidal thickness was 263 ± 48 μm (IQR). Median central choroidal thickness was greater than mean peripheral thickness. Macular evaluation showed a statistically significant difference in central, perifoveal, and parafoveal thicknesses, with lower values being recorded for the study sample compared with the manufacturer’s data. Conclusions SD-OCT has become a useful tool to obtain high-resolution images of the macula and choroid. This method allows precise assessment of the retinal and choroidal layers to diagnose and follow up posterior segment diseases. We are reporting normal cut-off values of macular and choroidal thicknesses in healthy Hispanic subjects evaluated with Optovue SD-OCT as new diagnostic normal parameters for research and clinical activities.
Choroidal Thickness in Healthy Eyes Measured by Widefield Optical Coherence Tomography

Abstract:Introduction: The choroid and its role in posterior segment pathology have become an increasing subject of study. The objective of the present study was to analyze choroidal thickness (CT) in healthy eyes by widefield (WF) optical coherence tomography (OCT) up to the periphery and to compare the reliability of manual versus automatic measurement. Methods: Cross-sectional and noninterventional study conducted on 191 healthy eyes of 101 patients. All patients were scanned by using WF-OCT (Xephilio WF-OCT S1; Canon Corp, Tokyo, Japan). CT was measured in 2,000 μm intervals automatically using the built-in software and manually by two masked observers. All analyses were performed using the IBM-PSSS statistical software program (IBM-SPSS, v. 28.0.0.0, Chicago, IL, USA). Results: CT was measured in 100% of the sample. The mean age of the study cohort was 39.05 ± 19.06 years old. Mean subfoveal CT measured automatically was 343.67 ± 84.18 μm and manually was 336.55 ± 75.57 μm. The thickest point was located 2,000 μm from the fovea in the superior sector in 62.83% of the subjects. According to age distribution, mean CT became significantly thinner from 40 years of age. When comparing automatic and manually measuring, the intraclass correlation coefficient was excellent ( p < 0.01) in all quadrants. Moreover, manual measurement interobserver agreement was excellent in all quadrants ( p < 0.01). Conclusion: The automatic system is valid and serves as the basis of choroid measurement. In more than 50% of the healthy subjects, superior CT is thicker than subfoveolar CT and mean CT became significantly thinner from 40 years of age.

Abstract:To evaluate the distribution of choroidal thickness (CT) and its trend with age in healthy people using 120° ultra-wide field swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (UWF SS-OCTA). In this cross-sectional observational study, healthy volunteers underwent single imaging of the fundus with UWF SS-OCTA at a field of view (FOV) of 120° (24 mm × 20 mm) centered on the macula. The characteristics of CT distribution in different regions and its changes with age were analyzed. A total of 128 volunteers with a mean age of 34.9 ± 20.1 years and 210 eyes were enrolled in the study. The thickest mean choroid thickness (MCT) was located at the macular region and supratemporal region, followed by the nasal side of the optic disc, and thinnest below the optic disc. The maximum MCT was: 213.40 ± 36.65 μm for the group aged 20–29, and the minimum MCT was: 162.11 ± 31.96 μm for the group aged ≥ 60. After the age of 50, MCT was significantly and negatively correlated decreased with age (r = − 0.358, p = 0.002), and the MCT in the macular region decreased more remarkably compared to other regions. The 120° UWF SS-OCTA can observe the distribution of choroidal thickness in the range of 24 mm × 20 mm and its variation with age. It was revealed that MCT decreased more rapidly in the macular region relative to other regions after 50 years old.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Purpose</h3>The purpose of this study was to quantify thickness, vessel density (VD) of retina and choroid in young adults (18–24 years old) using OCTA.<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methods</h3>This observational, cross-sectional study included 154 eyes from 77 young myopic adults. En-face angiogram OCTA was performed on a 3.00 × 3.00 mm region centered on the macula. Automated thickness calculations and macular maps were measured. Spherical equivalent refraction (SER) and AL were examined to determine associations with thickness, vessel density (VD) of retina and choroid.<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3>A total of 148 healthy eyes from 77 young myopic adults (29 males and 48 females) with a mean age of 21.80 ± 1.32 years (range: 18–24 years) were included. The mean SER and AL were − 4.06 ± 2.26D and 25.25 ± 1.28 mm, respectively. The mean retinal thickness (RT, ILM-RPE layer) was 240.91 ± 13.36 μm, the retinal superficial (SVD) and deep vessel density (DVD) in fovea region were 18.35 ± 4.77% and 32.99 ± 6.01%, respectively. The foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area was 0.31 ± 0.10 mm2. The mean subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) and choriocapillaris (CC) perfusion area were 232.16 ± 56.65 μm and 2.17 ± 0.10 mm2, respectively. By pearson's correlation analysis, SER was revealed to be negatively correlated with RT (r = −0.180, p = 0.028) and DVD (r = −0.185, p = 0.025) in fovea region. SER was revealed to be positively correlated with RT in nasal (r = 0.224, p = 0.006) and inferior (r = 0.217, p = 0.008) regions. AL was revealed to be positively correlated with RT (r = 0.250, p = 0.002) and DVD (r = 0.284, p < 0.001) in fovea region. SER was revealed to be positively correlated with SFCT (r = 0.486, p < 0.001). AL was revealed to be negatively correlated with FAZ area (r = −0.232, p = 0.005) and SFCT (r = −0.407). RT was revealed to be negatively correlated with FAZ area (r = −0.645, p < 0.001). SER (r = −0.079), AL (r = 0.071) and SFCT (r = 0.089) did not correlate significantly with the CC perfusion area (all p > 0.05).<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusion</h3>Myopic eyes present increased RT, DVD and thinned SFCT in fovea, while no significant correlation could be found between SER, AL, SFCT and CC perfusion area. It may indicate that the SFCT thinning may be secondary to ocular elongation, while the CC perfusion area may be a factor independent of AL growth.

Relationship of Gender, Body Mass Index, and Axial Length with Central Retinal Thickness Using Optical Coherence Tomography

Abstract:BackgroundOptical coherence tomography (OCT) acquires cross-sectional retinal images with high resolution using low-coherence interferometry. Few studies have studied the effect of demographic data and ocular parameters that may affect central retinal thickness. In this study, these factors were used as parameters to analyse if any significant relationship exists with central retinal thickness.MethodsVolunteers with a best-corrected visual acuity of 6/12 or better and no evidence of ocular abnormalities or interventions were recruited from October 2001 to March 2003. Body mass index (BMI), autorefraction, and keratometry recordings were measured, followed by applanation tonometry and A-scan ultrasonography. The central retinal thickness of the right eye was analysed using a scan length of 3 cm. Another 25 eyes were selected for interobserver reproducibility.ResultsIn all, 117 normal subjects (60 male and 57 female subjects) were recruited. The mean thickness of the central retina with a diameter of 1 mm was 203±23 μm for male and 189±20 μm for female subjects. Age, intraocular pressure, and keratometric readings were not significantly correlated with central retinal thickness. Using multiple regression, gender, BMI, axial length, and signal-to-noise ratio (P<0.05) were significantly associated with the central retinal thickness. The intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.98 for interobserver reproducibility.ConclusionOCT has a high interobserver reproducibility. The male gender, larger BMI, and longer axial length are associated with a significantly thicker central retina and these parameters should be considered for assessing retinal thickening and baseline comparisons in future studies.

Abstract:PURPOSE:To evaluate retinal thickness (RT), retinal volume (RV) and choroidal thickness (ChT) in Chinese children using Cirrus-HD optical coherence tomography (OCT), and assess their associations with spherical equivalent (SE), age and gender.METHODS:This was a prospective study that recruited 193 healthy Chinese children (193 eyes) with no ophthalmic disease history between December 2012 and December 2013. RT and RV were acquired using OCT. Subfoveal ChT (SFCT) and ChT1-mm and 2-mm temporal, nasal, superior and inferior to the fovea were measured manually.RESULTS:RT in the inner temporal and nasal regionsdiffered significantly between refraction groups (both P<0.05). Significant differences were also found inSFCT andChT 1- and 2-mm inferior to the fovea (all P<0.05). RT differed significantly between males and females in the outer superior region in the emmetropia group (P<0.05). ChT differed significantly between males and females 2-mm temporal to the fovea in the emmetropia group (P<0.05), and 1-mm temporal to the fovea in the mild myopia group (P<0.05). SE correlated positively with RT in the inner temporal (r = 0.230),nasal (r = 0.252) and inferior (r = 0.149) regions (all P<0.05). Age correlated positively with foveolar (r = 0.169), total macular (r = 0.202), inner temporal (r = 0.237), inner nasal (r = 0.248), inner superior (r = 0.378) and inner inferior (r = 0.345) region thicknesses, and with RV (r = 0.207)(all P<0.05). SE correlated positively with SFCT (r = 0.195), and with ChT1-mm temporal (r = 0.167), 1- and 2-mm nasal (r = 0.144 and r = 0.162), 2-mm superior (r = 0.175), and 1- and 2-mm inferior (r = 0.207 and r = 0.238) to the fovea (all P<0.05). Age had no significant association with ChT.CONCLUSIONS:SE, age and gender did not influence macular RT and ChT in most regions, and correlations of RT with age and ChT with SE were weak.

Abstract:Purpose To analyze the structure of the choriocapillaris in healthy eyes by using averaged en face images acquired using swept source optical coherence tomography angiography and to examine the changes in the macular profile in relation to age, sex, axial length, and choroidal thickness. Methods This prospective, cross-sectional study included 81 eyes of 81 subjects without ophthalmologic or systemic diseases who underwent a full ophthalmologic examination, including 3 × 3-mm macular optical coherence tomography angiography. Four to nine choriocapillaris en face images were registered and averaged. The averaged images were then binarized and analyzed. Results The averaged choriocapillaris images showed a continuous capillary meshwork, whereas the unaveraged images had a granular appearance. The mean total area and size of flow voids were 0.99 ± 0.20 mm 2 and 567.8 ± 201.5 μm 2 , respectively, and these values correlated positively with age (p = 0.002, R = 0.336 and p = 0.026, R = 0.247, respectively). Age-related gains in the mean total area and flow void size were 4.20 × 10 −3 mm 2 and 3.07 μm 2 per year, respectively. However, the mean total area and flow void size had no significant correlation with axial length, subfoveal choroidal thickness, or sex. Conclusions Multiple averaged en face swept source optical coherence tomography angiography is more effective than a single optical coherence tomography angiography scan for better visualizing the choriocapillaris. The total area and size of flow voids within a 3 × 3-mm macular area positively correlated with age. This technique can be useful for investigating the changes arising in macular diseases.

Abstract:Clinical relevance: Expanding practitioner knowledge regarding potential changes in ocular structure of keratoconic eyes will improve the eye care practice and patient management. Background: This study aimed to compare the difference in choroidal thickness between keratoconus patients and two control groups of myopic-astigmatism and emmetropic subjects. Methods: A case-control study was undertaken which included 50 patients with keratoconus, 50 with myopic-astigmatism, 30 with emmetropia aged between 18 and 39 years. Choroidal thickness was measured at three different locations, including the subfoveal, nasal, and temporal (750 micrometres) to the fovea, using a spectral-domain optical coherence tomography with an enhanced depth imaging technique. Results: The mean spherical equivalents were 0.03 ± 0.05, -3.00 ± 0.2, and -3.00 ± 0.3 dioptre in emmetropic, myopic-astigmatism and keratoconus subjects, respectively. The choroid was significantly thicker in keratoconus patients than in myopic-astigmatism and emmetropic subjects in the subfoveal (396 ± 14, 314 ± 12, and 320 ± 18 μm, respectively, p < 0.001), temporal (405 ± 14, 317 ± 12, and 328 ± 19 μm, respectively, p < 0.001) and nasal (376 ± 14, 285 ± 12, and 311 ± 18 μm, respectively; p < 0.001). Conclusion: Choroidal thickness is increased in keratoconus. The exact mechanism for choroidal thickening in individuals with keratoconus is unknown, but inflammatory responses could be the reason.
Macular Choroidal Thickness in Children: The Shandong Children Eye Study

Abstract:PURPOSE To examine the thickness of the macular choroid and its associations in school children aged 6 to 18 years. METHODS The school-based cross-sectional Shandong Children Eye Study included 6026 (94.7%) of 6364 eligible children fulfilling the inclusion criterion of an age from 4 to 18 years. Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) was performed for a subgroup of 972 school children aged 6+ years. All participants underwent ocular examinations, including measurement of visual acuity, cycloplegic refractometry, biometry, and SD-OCT (enhanced depth imaging mode) for measurement of choroidal thickness. RESULTS The study included 972 children (501 girls) with a mean age of 11.3 ± 3.3 years (range, 6-18 years) and mean axial length of 24.10 ± 1.56 mm (range, 16.57-28.82 mm). Mean choroidal thickness was thicker (P < 0.001) at 500 μm temporal to the foveola (290 ± 67 μm) than in the subfoveal region (283 ± 67 μm; range, 113-507 μm) and the region 500 μm superior to the fovea (283 ± 66 μm), where it was thicker (P < 0.001) than at 500 μm inferior of the foveola (281 ± 66 μm), and it was thinnest (P < 0.001) at 500 μm nasal of the foveola (268 ± 67 μm). In multivariate analysis, thicker SFCT was (overall correlation coefficient r: 0.51) associated with shorter axial length (P < 0.001; standardized correlation coefficient β: -0.48; B: -23.7; 95% confidence interval [CI]: -27.2 to -20.3), male sex (P = 0.006; β: -0.08; B: -10.7; 95% CI: -18.3 to -3.11), and younger age (P = 0.04; β: -0.07; B: -1.46; 95% CI: -2.85 to -0.07). CONCLUSIONS As in adults, thicker SFCT in children and teenagers was markedly associated with shorter axial length, and to a lesser degree with male sex and older age. As in adults, increasing axial myopia in teenagers is associated with choroidal thinning and development of a leptochoroid.

Each subject underwent a comprehensive ophthalmologic examination. Following this detailed ophthalmologic examination, the Rs 3000 Nidek Japan OCT device was used for the assessment choroidal, macular and RNFL Thickness. RESULTS The mean age of non-pregnant females was 29.64 ±3.13, mean age of pregnant females was 28.93 ±3.89 and of postmenopausal women was 53.86 ± 1.75. There was no significant difference in all macular quadrants in the 3 study groups. Choroidal thickness was statistically significant thicker in healthy pregnant females (333.36 ±44.42) than in healthy non pregnant (326.93±31.50) and significantly thinner in healthy post-menopausal women (282.64±28.04) than healthy non pregnant females. There was no significant difference in RNFL thickness between the 3 study groups. CONCLUSION Oct has evolved over the past decade as one of the most important ancillary tests in ophthalmic practice. Pregnancy hormones may lead to an increase in fluid volume in many tissues of the body. There was no statistically significant difference in macular thickness and RNFL thickness between the 3 study groups. Choroidal thickness was statistically significant thicker in healthy pregnant than in healthy non pregnant and significant thinner in healthy post-menopausal women than healthy non pregnant.

Abstract:PurposeOcular hypertension (OHT) is a clinical entity characterized by elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) without optic nerve damage. In the presence of other risk factors, OHT may progress to glaucoma. This study aimed to evaluate ocular blood flow (OBF) and choroidal thickness (CT), which may be markers and/or risk factors that could assess the progression of OHT to glaucoma.Material and methodsAge and gender matched 60 eyes of 32 patients with OHT and 61 eyes of 31 control patients were included for this study. All participants underwent a detailed ophthalmological examination including best-corrected visual acuity, IOP measurement with Goldmann applanation tonometry, gonioscopy, optic nerve evaluation with 78 D lens, and visual field test with Humphrey visual field analyzer. Retinal nerve fiber layer, ganglion cell complex, and central corneal thickness measurements were performed by optical coherence tomography (OCT). CT was measured with OCT in the fovea, 1.5 mm, 2 mm, 2.5 mm nasal and temporal to the fovea and from nasal and temporal to the optic disk. OBF data including peak systolic velocity (PSV), end-diastolic velocity (EDV), resistivity index (RI) and pulsatility index (PI) were measured with color Doppler imaging (CDI) from the ophthalmic artery (OA), central retinal artery (CRA), medial and lateral branches of short posterior ciliary arteries (MPCA, LPCA). Systolic (SBP) and diastolic arterial blood pressure were also noted.ResultsCT measurement at each point in the OHT group compared to the control group were found to be significantly thinner (p = 0.001). There was a decrement in CT from the fovea to the nasal and temporal retina in both groups. In the OHT group, there was a significant decrease in PSV and EDV of OA, CRA, MPCA, and LPCA, and a significant increase in PI and RI of measured arteries. (EDV p = 0.036, PI p = 0.006, RI p = 0.006 for OA and p = 0.001 for other arteries and all OBF measurements). There was a negative correlation between CT and age, IOP and axial length (AL) in OHT group (r = − 0.529, p = 0.001; r = − 0.258, p = 0.047; r = − 0.345, p = 0.007, respectively, for fovea). But there was no statistically significant correlation between CT and other measurements in the control group, except age (r = − 0.860 p = 0.001 for fovea).ConclusionWe found that OBF decrement and choroidal thinning in OHT group compared with controls. Interpretation both of CT measurements with OCT and OBF parameters with CDI and new imaging technologies may help to prevent and reduce the possible optic nerve damage.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the choroidal thickness in highly myopic eyes and to correlate it with age and axial length of the eyes.Methods A total of 67 patients (132 eyes) with high myopia were studied in a clinical setting.Eyes were imaged using optical coherence tomography.Choroidal thickness was manually measured.Eleven measurements were taken at 500 mm intervals up to 2500 mm with capiler system.The axial length was also measured in all subjects using ultrasound pachymetry.Data were analyzed by statistic software SPSS 16.0.Results The mean age was 47.7±15.4 years (range,20～74),mean axial length was 27.6±1.8mm (range,24～35),mean spherical equivalent was-11.5±5.3 D (range,-6～29).Mean macular choridal thickness was l19±80pm (range,20～384).The choroid was thickest temporally (125μm),then subfoveally (ll9μm),and was thinnest in the nasal area (72μm).Linear correlation analysis results showed the age,axial length and spherical equivalent were negatively correlated with mean ehoroidal thickness (age r =-0.668,P ＜0.000;axial length r =-0.412,P ＜0.000;spherical equivalent r =-0.423,P ＜0.000).Conclusions The choroidal thickness in highly myopic eyes is thinner than emmetropic patients.Axial length,age and spherical equivalent are associated with choroidal thickness in high myopia.

Abstract:PURPOSE : To generate the normative data of macular and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness for Bulgarian population using 3D OCT 2000 – Topcon and to evaluate the effects of gender and age on these parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS : The 131 eyes of 67 healthy individuals aged between 16-71 years, with no ocular disease and best corrected visual acuity of 20/20, were examined using standard scanning protocols. The mean macular and RNFL thickness were evaluated, and the effects of age and gender on these parameters were analyzed. RESULTS : The mean retinal thickness (RT) was 275.4±11.59μm, mean central foveal thickness (CFT) was 241.8±2.01μm, mean central point thickness (CPT) was 213.7±28.64μm. The macular thickness was lowest at the fovea and maximal at the superior inner macula (308.7±13.6 μm). The mean retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness was 109.44±9.73μm. The RNFL was thickest in the inferior quadrant (136.13±17.70μm). There was negative but insignificant correlation between macular thickness and volume, and age. The RNFL thickness showed significant negative correlation with age (p=0.03). CFT in females was significantly thinner than in males (p=0.01). CONCLUSIONS : Our findings provide basic data to facilitate macular and RNFL thickness analysis using 3D OCT- 2000. The normative database is important for early diagnosis and evaluation of pathological changes in various retinal diseases and glaucoma. Our results indicate that age and gender must be considered while interpreting macular retinal thickness data.

Abstract:Abstract Purpose To determine the distribution of subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) and its associated demographic, ocular, and systemic factors in an elderly population. Methods This report is part of the Tehran Geriatric Eye Study (TGES); a population-based cross-sectional study that was conducted on the urban elderly population of Tehran, aged 60 years and above using multi-stage stratified random cluster sampling. Choroidal imaging was performed using Spectralis SD-OCT with enhanced depth imaging mode. Results The average SFCT was 265.3 ± 25.9 μm (95% CI: 262.8-267.7) in the whole sample. According to the multiple generalized estimating equation (GEE) model, pseudophakia had a statistically significant direct relationship with SFCT (coefficient = 5.69), and history of cerebrovascular accident (CVA) was significantly inversely related to SFCT (coefficient=-4.77). Moreover, there was a significant interaction between age and sex in the average SFCT so that with increasing age, the SFCT increased in men and decreased in women. Conclusion The normal values of SFCT in the present study can be used as a reference database for clinical and research purposes. Age-sex interaction, pseudophakia, and history of CVA were significantly associated with SFCT in the elderly population. It is recommended that these factors be taken into account when interpreting SFCT data.

Abstract:PurposeTo analyse morphologic features of the choroid in Non-pathological myopic eyes using spectral-domain (SD) optical coherence tomography (OCT).MethodsRetrospective analysis of enhanced depth SD-OCT images of Non-pathological myopic eyes in comparison with age-matched healthy controls was performed. Choroidal thickness (CT) and large choroidal vessel thickness (LCVT) were measured at the fovea, 750 µm nasally from fovea (N750) and 750 µm temporally (T750) from fovea. Medium choroidal vessel thickness (MCVT) was calculated by subtracting LCVT from CT. Choriocapillaris was encompassed by MCVT, given its reduced thickness. Linear regression analysis evaluated the relationship between age and axial with CT, LCVT and MCVT.ResultsThe study group comprised 42 eyes of 31 patients (mean age 46.13 ± 15.63; 15 females). Control group included 57 eyes of 34 patients (mean age of 42.3 ± 15.29; 24 females). Mean axial length in myopic eyes and control group was 26.57 ± 1.27 and 23.59 ± 0.99 mm respectively. Myopic eyes showed significant thinning of MCVT and CT at all locations (p < 0.0001) compared to controls, unlike LCVT (p > 0.05). With each decade, thinning of up to 37 µm in CT was noted along with thinning of LCVT (up to 22.6 µm) and MCVT (up to 25 µm). Each mm increase in axial length caused 38.2 µm thinning of choroid along with LCVT (<10 µm), however, MCVT showed more notable thinning (>30 µm).ConclusionSignificant thinning of MCVT was noted in non-pathological myopic eyes in comparison to healthy subjects. It appears that MCVT has stronger relationship with age and axial length.

Abstract:The purpose of the cross-sectional study is to describe the values and distribution of choroidal thickness and to explore its related factors, especially age, in Chinese children. A total of 3001 Chinese school children aged 6 to 19 years underwent comprehensive ophthalmic examinations, including axial length and cycloplegic refraction. Choroidal thickness was measured by swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). There was a greater difference in the more central regions between the myopes and emmetropes. Multiple regression analysis was performed to determine the associated factors of choroidal thickness. The results demonstrated that age was independently positively related to choroidal thickness for emmetropes (β = 3.859, p < 0.001), and mild myopes with spherical equivalent greater than −2.00 D (−1.25 D < spherical equivalent ≤ −0.50 D: β = 3.476, p = 0.006; −2.00 D < spherical equivalent ≤ −1.25 D: β = 3.232, p = 0.020). However, no significant relationship between age and choroidal thickness was found in children with spherical equivalent ≤ −2.00 D, suggesting that the protective effect of physiologic choroidal growth with age against rapid axial elongation disappeared while axial elongation becomes the dominant determinant of choroidal thickness among children with myopia worse than −2.00 D.
