Abstract:To further assess the biodegradability of biobased copolyesters poly(butylene adipate-co-butylene furandicarboxylate)s (PBAFs) and poly(butylene succinate-co-butylene furandicarboxylate)s (PBSFs), compost as well as hydrolytic degradation of PBAFs and PBAFs with 40-60 mol% butylene furandicarboxylate (BF) unit and high intrinsic viscosity (1.1-1.8 dL/g) were investigated. The hydrolytic degradation was accelerated under acidic and alkaline in comparison to neutral condition. Faster weight loss was observed under alkaline condition but lower intrinsic viscosity was observed under acidic condition due to the distinct water solubility and diffusibility of the degradation products at various pH values. All the copolyesters reached 90% or higher biodegradation in less than 110 days at standard composting conditions. Copolyesters with higher BF content showed slower biodegradation, and PBAFs degraded faster in compost than PBAFs with the same composition. Very interestingly, these copolyesters showed easier biodegradation in compost even at higher aromatic content when compared with their terephthalic acid (TPA)-counterparts. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), a promising biodegradable aliphatic-aromatic copolyester material, can be applied as an alternative material to reduce the adverse effects of conventional plastics. However, the degradation of PBAT plastics in soil is time-consuming, and effective PBAT-degrading microorganisms have rarely been reported. In this study, the biodegradation properties of PBAT by an elite fungal strain and related mechanisms were elucidated. Four PBAT-degrading fungal strains were isolated from farmland soils, and Purpureocillium lilacinum strain BA1S showed a prominent degradation rate. It decomposed approximately 15 wt.% of the PBAT films 30 days after inoculation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC‒MS) were conducted to analyze the physicochemical properties and composition of the byproducts after biodegradation. In the presence of PBAT, the lipolytic enzyme activities of BA1S were remarkably induced, and its cutinase gene was also significantly upregulated. Of note, the utilization of PBAT in BA1S cells was closely correlated with intracellular cytochrome P450 (CYP) monooxygenase. Furthermore, CreA-mediated carbon catabolite repression was confirmed to be involved in regulating PBAT-degrading hydrolases and affected the degradation efficiency. This study provides new insight into the degradation of PBAT by elite fungal strains and increases knowledge on the mechanism, which can be applied to control the biodegradability of PBAT films in the future.

Isolation and Degradation Characteristics of PBAT Film Degrading Bacteria

Abstract:In recent years, PBAT (polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate) mulch has become one of the most commonly used biodegradable mulching films. In this paper, five potential strains of PBAT film degrading bacteria were screened from the soil sample using PBAT film as the sole carbon source. A highly efficient PBAT degrading strain JZ1 was isolated by comparing the degradation performance of PBAT mulching film identified as Peribacillus frigoritolerans S2313 by 16S rDNA sequence analysis. The capacity of the strain to degrade PBAT film was optimized by adjusting the cultivation conditions such as nitrogen source, pH, and inoculum volume. After 8 weeks of cultivation, the actual degradation rate of the strain to PBAT mulch film reached 12.45%. SEM (scanning electron microscopy) coupled with EDX (energy dispersive spectroscopy) analysis showed that microbial degradation is an oxidation process and is mainly due to the amorphous regions of the PBAT film. The biodegradation of PBAT film by Peribacillus frigoritolerans may provide a promising method for regulating the degradation progress of PBAT film in the farmlands.

Abstract:In recent years, Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) films were wildly used due to its biodegradable properties. However, there are few reports of strains that can high efficiently degrade PBAT. Thermobifida fusca FXJ-1, a thermophilic actinomycete, was screened and identified from compost. FXJ-1 can efficiently degrade PBAT at 55 °C in MSM medium. The degradation rates of the pure PBAT film (PF), PBAT film used for mulching on agricultural fields (PAF), and PBAT-PLA-ST film (PPSF) were 82.87 ± 1.01%, 87.83 ± 2.00% and 52.53 ± 0.54%, respectively, after nine days of incubation in MSM medium. Cracking areas were monitored uniformly distributed on the surfaces of three kinds of PBAT-based films after treatment with FXJ-1 using scanning electron microscopy. The LC–MS results showed that PBAT might be degraded into adipic acid, terephthalic acid, butylene adipate, butylene terephthalate and butylene adipate-co-terephthalate, and these products are involved in the cleavage of ester bonds. We also found that amylase produced by FXJ-1 played an important role in the degradation of PPSF. FXJ-1 also showed an efficient PBAT-based films degradation ability in simulating compost environment, which implied its potential application in PBAT and starch-based film degradation by industrial composting.

Abstract:The globe is facing increasing challenges of plastic pollution due to single use of plastic-based packaging material. The plastic material is continuously being dumped into the natural environment which causes serious harm to the entire ecosystem. Polymer degradation in nature is very difficult, so the use of biodegradable polymers instead of conventional polymers can mitigate this issue. Due to the good mechanical properties and biodegradability, aliphatic–aromatic polymers are being widely commercialized. Due to the advancement in molecular biology, many studies have reported specific microbes that can effectively degrade PBAT. Aliphatic polyesters undergo hydrolytic cleavage of ester groups, so they can be easily degraded by microorganisms. In this study, we investigated the enzymatic degradation of poly (butylene adipate co-terephthalate) (PBAT) copolymer using lipase B from Candida antarctica (CALB). Results of the study displayed approximately 5.16% loss in PBAT mass after 2 days which significantly increased to approximately 15.7% at the end of the experiment (12 days) as compared to blank. The pH of the degradation solution also displayed significant reduction and reached the minimum value of 6.85 at the end of the experiment. The structure and morphology of PBAT after degradation were characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM, and TGA. FTIR analysis showed that after degradation many peaks become weaker and the peak at 2950 cm−1 almost disappeared after 12 days. The XRD results indicated that as the degradation time increases, the intensity of diffraction peaks slightly increases as compared to the blank PBAT. TGA also confirmed the successful degradation of PBAT with time. SEM micrographs further confirmed that degradation has occurred. Hence, biodegradable polymers can widely be used. The effect of PBAT biodegradation on plant growth was also studied, and it was found that PBAT has no toxic effect on the growth of plants. Hence, PBAT can be employed in a wide range of applications.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Biodegradable polymers undergo a degradation process resulting from the action of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and algae. Poly(butylene adipate co-terephthalate) (PBAT) is considered a biodegradable synthetic polymer, even if its degradation has been confirmed under industrial composting conditions, the investigation of its degradation in the marine environment is still limited. Therefore, this work aims to study the biodegradation in the marine environment, of the biodegradable polymer (PBAT), and for that, it was submerged in a static system, using seawater from the coastal region of Pernambuco/Brazil as a fluid. The samples were studied by chemical, thermal and microbiological analyses, after 7, 14, 30, 90, 120 and 180 days of immersion. Microbiological analyzes indicated that aerobic heterotrophic bacteria (AHB), anaerobic heterotrophic bacteria (AnHB) and iron precipitating bacteria (IPB) were quantified in the system at all times at high concentrations, with the exception of Sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB), fungi and Pseudomonas that showed lower concentrations compared to other bacterial groups. Biodegradation was observed by the percentage of mass loss of approximately 2.25%. In the DSC, the expansion of melting peaks after exposure to the marine environment was noted, while the TGA did not show changes in the curve trends. The FTIR showed that no new band appeared, nor displacement, since the vibrations of the covalent bonds of the groups are present regardless of the biodegradation. Indicating that no significant microbiological degradation of PBAT was observed.
Biodegradation of Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) and Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) by Newly Isolated Penicillium oxalicum SS2 in Soil Microcosms and Partial Characterization of Extracellular Depolymerase

Abstract:A fungus, designated as strain SS2 able to degrade aliphatic polyesters, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV), was isolated from soil. Strain SS2 was identified through rDNA gene sequencing and showed maximum closeness to Penicillium oxalicum. The newly isolated P. oxalicum strain SS2 had completely degraded PHB and PHBV both in emulsion and films form within 36-48 h at 30 °C. Furthermore, P. oxalicum SS2 degraded PHB and PHBV films in soil environment in lab-built soil microcosms within 1 week. The polymer films were evaluated for changes after degradation through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The PHBV depolymerase enzyme was purified to homogeneity through column chromatography and molecular mass was found approximately 36 kDa. The depolymerase was stable over a wide range of temperature (15-60 °C) and pH (3.0-8.0) with optimum 40 °C and pH 5.0. The enzyme activity was significantly affected by various metal ions and surfactants. The enzyme activity was strongly enhanced in the presence of divalent cationic metal Cu2+ while inhibited by Zn2+ and non-polar detergents Tween 20 and Tween 60. Finally, it is concluded that P. oxalicum strain SS2 has profound degradation capabilities, and can be applied for the treatment of plastic-contaminated environments.
Biosynthesis and biodegradation of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) from Priestia flexa; A promising mangrove halophyte towards the development of sustainable eco-friendly bioplastics

Abstract:The protracted persistence of petrochemical plastics in the environment and their non-biodegradability impede the survival of living creatures. Recently, biopolymers are being thoroughly researched as a potential replacement for conventional plastics. This present study sought to locate Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) synthesizing bacterial species prevalent in the mangrove ecosystem. Six halophilic bacterial isolates were obtained from the mangrove habitat, four isolates displayed superior cell dry weight as well as PHB accumulation. Isolate PMPHB5 showed the highest cell dry weight (4.92 ± 0.02 g/L), while the maximum PHA yield (80%) was found with PMPHB7. Hence, PMPHB7 was chosen for further optimization of carbon source wherein glucose demonstrated improved cell growth as well as PHB production. The characterization of the PHB granules was performed by FT-IR spectroscopy and FE-SEM EDX. The presence of characteristic elements in the sample was confirmed using EDX. Isolate PMPHB7 was further identified as Priestia flexa through 16S rRNA gene sequencing (GenBank accession number: ON362236) and a phylogenetic tree was constructed to reveal the molecular relationships of this organism with others. The solvent-cast biopolymer film was made to check the biodegradability of the extracted PHB. When buried in soil, it was found that the biopolymer film exhibited approximately 73% biodegradation after 21 days. Thus, the present study sheds light on the potential of mangrove-associated halophytes to efficiently produce PHB that is readily biodegradable in soil.

Abstract:To investigate the biodegradability of novel thermoplastics poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx), films made of PHBHHx were subjected to degradation in activated sludge and compared with poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and Ecoflex, a biodegradable product of BASF. After 18 days degradation, 40% of P(HB-co-12%-HHx) and 20% of PHB were degraded, while Ecoflex only lost 5% of its weight. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the surface of Ecoflex was much smoother than that of P(HB-co-12%-HHx) and PHB. At the same time, PHBHHx degradation in a simplified system containing 0.1g/L lipase in phosphate buffer saline was found to be affected by its HHx content. It was found that P(HB-co-12%-HHx) was degraded faster compared with PHB, P(HB-co-5%-HHx) and P(HB-co-20%-HHx). SEM results revealed that P(HB-co-12%-HHx) films had the most porous surface after degradation. All these indicate that surface morphology played an important role in degradation of PHBHHx. P(HB-co-12%-HHx) combining the advantage of low crystallinity and rough surface was degraded the fastest.

Abstract:Poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) has been extensively used in every field of life, but the PBAT hydrolyzing microorganisms had rarely been studied. In this project, the synergistic degradation effect of bacteria identified from the farm soil of Shaanxi village yuan Jia cun was studied. To improve the degradation of PBAT, a co-culture system was made using SUST B1, SUST B2, and SUST B3. It was noted that the synergistic degradation of PBAT days was greater as compared to the monoculture system. Maximum lipase activity was observed after 6 days of incubation, the lipase activity (24.3 U/mL) of the co-culture surpassed the monoculture which was substantially complex as compared to individual bacterium SUST B1 (9.42 U/mL), SUST B2 (10.1 U/mL), and SUST B3 (8.7 U/mL) degrading 26.1% of PBAT. These results were further confirmed using XRD, FTIR, and SEM analysis. The mechanism of PBAT degradation was also studied using LC/MS. PBAT degradation is comprised of numerous phases that generate oligomers, dimers, and monomers. The microorganisms secreted the PBAT-degrading lipase that catalyzes the ester bonds present in the PBAT backbone and convert it into respective monomers like terephthalic acid, 1, 4-butanediol, and adipic acid. Microbes then uptake them to fulfill their carbon need and degrade them. Hence, PBAT bioremediation can be accomplished by a co-culture system. This is the first study to report the synergistic degradation of PBAT in the co-culture system.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Degradation of bioplastics in food-waste-treating anaerobic digestion (AD) plants is becoming an increasingly concerning issue as they are inevitably mixed with food waste during the waste collection process. The aim of this study was to assess the degradation of PBAT/PLA based biopolymer bags during mesophilic and thermophilic AD, co-digested with food waste, and subsequent aerobic post-treatment. After the AD process, no discernable biological degradation was observed for all of the PBAT/PLA polymers. The comparison of FTIR, XRD, TG analysis and contact angle analysis between raw and degraded PBAT/PLA polymer revealed structural changes after anaerobic incubation. Subsequent aerobic treatment facilitated the degradation of the PBAT/PLA polymers from thermophilic AD, which was attributed to the polymer-degrading microorganisms Brevundimonas and Sphingobacterium. Physical disintegration of the PBAT/PLA polymer was observed under thermophilic conditions. Those undegraded polymer fragments could affect digestate quality and increase the risk of releasing microplastics into the environment.

Abstract:Abstract Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), a polyester made of terephthalic acid (TPA), 1,4-butanediol, and adipic acid, is extensively utilized in plastic production and has accumulated globally as environmental waste. Biodegradation is an attractive strategy to manage PBAT, but an effective PBAT-degrading enzyme is required. Here, we demonstrate that cutinases are highly potent enzymes that can completely decompose PBAT films in 48 h. We further show that the engineered cutinases, by applying a double mutation strategy to render a more flexible substrate-binding pocket exhibit higher decomposition rates. Notably, these variants produce TPA as a major end-product, which is beneficial feature for the future recycling economy. The crystal structures of wild type and double mutation of a cutinase from Thermobifida fusca in complex with a substrate analogue are also solved, elucidating their substrate-binding modes. These structural and biochemical analyses enable us to propose the mechanism of cutinase-mediated PBAT degradation.

Abstract:Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are polymers with widespread applications, from medical devices to packaging. PHAs can be biodegradable in natural environments, such as soil, but the blend of PHA with other materials can change the polymer properties and consequently affect the biodegradation process. The composition of the microbial communities in soil also significantly affects the biodegradation, but other factors such as temperature, pH, and soil moisture, can also be determinant. These ecological and physic/chemical factors change in different seasons and in different soil layers. It is essential to know how these factors influence the PHAs' biodegradation to understand the impact of PHAs in nature. This review compiles the results on PHA polymers and PHA blends biodegradation, with focus on laboratory tests. The main factors affecting PHA's biodegradation in soil, both in laboratory tests and in the environment are also discussed.

The fate of post-use biodegradable PBAT-based mulch films buried in agricultural soil

Abstract:The fate of black biodegradable mulch film (MF) based on starch and poly(butylene-adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) in agricultural soil is investigated herein. Pristine (BIO-0) and UV-aged film samples (BIO-A192) were buried for 16 months at an experimental field in southern Italy. Visual, physical, chemical, morphological, and mechanical analyses were carried out before and after samples burial. Film residues in the form of macro- and microplastics in soil were analyzed at the end of the trial. Progressive deterioration of both pristine and UV-aged samples, with surface loss and alterations in mechanical properties, occurred from 42 days of burial. After 478 days, the apparent surface of BIO-0 and BIO-A192 films decreased by 57 % and 66 %, respectively. Burial determined a rapid depletion of starch from the polymeric blend, especially for the BIO-A192, while the degradation of the polyester phase was slower. Upon burial, an enrichment of aromatic moieties of PBAT in the film residues was observed, as well as microplastics release to soil. The analysis of the MF degradation products extracted from soil (0.006-0.008 % by mass in the soil samples) revealed the predominant presence of adipate moieties. After 478 days of burial, about 23 % and 17 % of the initial amount of BIO-0 and BIO-A192, respectively, were extracted from the soil. This comprehensive study underscores the complexity of biodegradation phenomena that involve the new generation of mulch films in the field. The different biodegradability of the polymeric components, the climate, and the soil conditions that did not strictly meet the parameters required for the standard test method devised for MFs, have significantly influenced their degradation rate. This finding further emphasizes the importance of implementing field experiments to accurately assess the real effects of biodegradable MFs on soil health and overall agroecosystem sustainability.
Marine-Derived Actinomycetes: Biodegradation of Plastics and Formation of PHA Bioplastics-A Circular Bioeconomy Approach

Abstract:Plastics are present in the majority of daily-use products worldwide. Due to society's production and consumption patterns, plastics are accumulating in the environment, causing global pollution issues and intergenerational impacts. Our work aims to contribute to the development of solutions and sustainable methods to mitigate this pressing problem, focusing on the ability of marine-derived actinomycetes to accelerate plastics biodegradation and produce polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), which are biodegradable bioplastics. The thin plastic films' biodegradation was monitored by weight loss, changes in the surface chemical structure (Infra-Red spectroscopy FTIR-ATR), and by mechanical properties (tensile strength tests). Thirty-six marine-derived actinomycete strains were screened for their plastic biodegradability potential. Among these, Streptomyces gougerotti, Micromonospora matsumotoense, and Nocardiopsis prasina revealed ability to degrade plastic films-low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polystyrene (PS) and polylactic acid (PLA) in varying conditions, namely upon the addition of yeast extract to the culture media and the use of UV pre-treated thin plastic films. Enhanced biodegradation by these bacteria was observed in both cases. S. gougerotti degraded 0.56% of LDPE films treated with UV radiation and 0.67% of PS films when inoculated with yeast extract. Additionally, N. prasina degraded 1.27% of PLA films when these were treated with UV radiation, and yeast extract was added to the culture medium. The main and most frequent differences observed in FTIR-ATR spectra during biodegradation occurred at 1740 cm-1, indicating the formation of carbonyl groups and an increase in the intensity of the bands, which indicates oxidation. Young Modulus decreased by 30% on average. In addition, S. gougerotti and M. matsumotoense, besides biodegrading conventional plastics (LDPE and PS), were also able to use these as a carbon source to produce degradable PHA bioplastics in a circular economy concept.
Bioplastic degradation and assimilation processes by a novel bacterium isolated from the marine plastisphere

Abstract:Biosourced and biodegradable plastics offer a promising solution to reduce environmental impacts of plastics for specific applications. Here, we report a novel bacterium named Alteromonas plasticoclasticus MED1 isolated from the marine plastisphere that forms biofilms on foils of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV). Experiments of degradation halo, plastic matrix weight loss, bacterial oxygen consumption and heterotrophic biosynthetic activity showed that the bacterial isolate MED1 is able to degrade PHBV and to use it as carbon and energy source. The likely entire metabolic pathway specifically expressed by this bacterium grown on PHBV matrices was shown by further genomic and transcriptomic analysis. In addition to a gene coding for a probable secreted depolymerase, a gene cluster was located that encodes characteristic enzymes involved in the complete depolymerization of PHBV, the transport of oligomers , and in the conversion of the monomers into intermediates of central carbon metabolism. The transcriptomic experiments showed the activation of the glyoxylate shunt during PHBV degradation, setting the isocitrate dehydrogenase activity as regulated branching point of the carbon flow entering the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Our study also shows the potential of exploring the natural plastisphere to discover new bacteria with promising metabolic capabilities.

Abstract:Microbial biodegradation of commercially available poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)-polylactic acid-thermoplastic starch based bio-plastic has been pursued at high temperatures exceeding 55 °C. Herein, we first reported three newly isolated fungal strains from farmland soil samples of Republic of Korea namely, Pyrenochaetopsis sp. strain K2, Staphylotrichum sp. S2-1, and Humicola sp. strain S2-3 were capable of degrading a commercial bio-plastic film with degradation rates of 9.5, 8.6, and 12.2%, respectively after 3 months incubation at ambient conditions. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses showed that bio-plastic film was extensively fragmented with severe cracking on the surface structure after incubation with isolated fungal strains. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis also revealed that high crystallinity of the commercial bio-plastic film was significantly decreased after degradation by fungal strains. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC–MS) analyses of the fungal culture supernatants containing the bio-plastic film showed the peaks for adipic acid, terephthalic acid (TPA), and terephthalate-butylene (TB) as major metabolites, suggesting cleavage of ester bonds and accumulation of TPA. Furthermore, a consortium of fungal strain K2 with TPA degrading bacterium Pigmentiphaga sp. strain P3-2 isolated from the same sampling site exhibited faster degradation rate of the bio-plastic film within 1 month of incubation with achieving complete biodegradation of accumulated TPA. We assume that the extracellular lipase activity presented in the fungal cultures could hydrolyze the ester bonds of PBAT component of bio-plastic film. Taken together, the fungal and bacterial consortium investigated herein could be beneficial for efficient biodegradation of the commercial bio-plastic film at ambient conditions.

Abstract:The global consumption of plastics generates accelerated environmental pollution in landfills and marine ecosystems. Biopolymers are the materials with the greatest potential to replace synthetic polymers in the market due to their good biodegradability, however, there are still several disadvantages, mainly related to their production cost. Considering the above, the generation of biodegradable and biocompatible bioplastics stands out as an alternative solution, some of which are made from renewable raw materials, including polyhydroxyalkanoates PHAs. Although much research has been done on bacteria with the capacity for intracellular accumulation of PHAs, among others, it is also possible to produce PHAs using mixed microbial cultures instead of a single microorganism, using natural microbial consortia that have the capacity to store high amounts of PHAs. In this contribution, three methods for the extraction and purification of PHAs produced by fermentation using volatile fatty acids as a carbon source at different concentrations were evaluated, using the pure strain Burkholderia cepacia 2G-57 and the mixed cultures of the activated sludge from the El Salitre WWTP, in order to select the best method from the point of view of environmental sustainability as this will contribute to the scalability of the process. The mixed cultures were identified by sequencing of the 16S gene. A yield of 89% was obtained from the extraction and purification of PHA using acetic acid as a solvent, which according to its properties is "greener" than chloroform. The polymer obtained was identified as polyhydroxybutylated PHB.

Abstract:The widespread use of polyethylene (PE) mulch films has led to a significant accumulation of plastic waste in agricultural soils. The biodegradation of plastic waste by microorganisms promises to provide a cost-effective and environmentally-friendly alternative for mitigating soil plastic pollution. A large number of microorganisms capable of degrading PE have been reported, but degradation may be further enhanced by the cooperative activity of multiple microbial species. Here, two novel strains of Arthrobacter sp. and Streptomyces sp. were isolated from agricultural soils and shown to grow with PE film as a sole carbon source. Arthrobacter sp. mainly grew in the suspension phase of the culture, and Streptomyces sp. formed substantial biofilms on the surface of the PE film, indicating that these strains were of different metabolic types and occupied different microenvironments with contrasting nutritional access. Individual strains were able to degrade the PE film to some extent in a 90-day inoculation experiment, as indicated by decreased hydrophobicity, increased carbonyl index and CO2 evolution, and the formation of biofilms on the film surface. However, a consortium of both strains had a much greater effect on these degradation properties. Together, these results provide new insights into the mechanisms of PE biodegradation by a microbial consortium composed of different types of microbes with possible metabolic complementarities.

Abstract:In recent years, poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) has been widely used. However, PBAT-degrading bacteria have rarely been reported. PBAT-degrading bacteria were isolated from farmland soil and identified. The effects of growth factors on the degradation of PBAT and the lipase activity of PBAT-degrading bacteria were assessed. The degradation mechanism was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray diffraction, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results showed that Stenotrophomonas sp. YCJ1 had a significant degrading effect on PBAT. Under certain conditions, the strain could secrete 10.53 U/mL of lipase activity and degrade 10.14 wt.% of PBAT films. The strain secreted lipase to catalyze the degradation of the ester bonds in PBAT, resulting in the production of degradation products such as terephthalic acid, 1,4-butanediol, and adipic acid. Furthermore, the degradation products could participate in the metabolism of YCJ1 as carbon sources to facilitate complete degradation of PBAT, indicating that the strain has potential value for the bioremediation of PBAT in the environment.
