Abstract:The role of earthworms in reducing the antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in sludge vermicompost remains unclear. The structure of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) of sludge may be associated with the horizontal gene transfer behavior of ARGs in the vermicomposting of sludge. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of earthworms on the structural characteristics of EPS associated with the fate of ARGs in EPS during the vermicomposting of sludge. The results showed vermicomposting could diminish the abundance of ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in the EPS of sludge by 47.93 % and 7.75 %, compared to the control, respectively. Relative to the control, vermicomposting also led to the reduction of MGEs abundances in the soluble EPS of 40.04 %, lightly bound EPS of 43.53 %, and tightly bound EPS of 70.49 %, respectively. The total abundances of certain ARGs dramatically diminished 95.37 % in tightly bound EPS of sludge during vermicomposting. In vermicomposting, the main influencing factor of ARGs distribution was the proteins in LB-EPS, accounting for 48.5 % of the variation. This study suggests that the earthworms lower the total abundances of ARGs by regulating the microbial community and modifying the microbial metabolic pathways associated with ARGs and MGEs in the EPS of sludge.

Abstract:Earthworms have shown their effectiveness in reducing the abundances of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) from solid waste. However, the mechanisms of the reduced ARGs by earthworm and whether the solid waste would affect the ARGs profile in earthworm gut were poorly understood. Herein, the patterns of ARGs and microbial communities in digested sludge-amended soil and earthworm gut after 80-day cultivation were investigated. Results show that the enrichment of ARGs (e.g., tetA, tetQ, and sulII) in soil caused by digested sludge-amendment was temporary and would recover to their original levels before amendment. In addition, earthworms could contribute to the further reduction of ARG abundances, which was mainly attributed to their gut digestion via shifting the microbial community (e.g., attenuating the anaerobes). However, the amended soil could significantly increase ARGs abundance in the earthworm gut, which may enhance the potential risk of ARGs spread via the food chain. These findings may provide a new sight on the control of ARGs occurrence and dissemination in sludge-amended soil ecosystem with consideration of earthworms.

Abstract:Applying organic fertilizers has been well documented to facilitate the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in soil ecosystems. However, the role of soil fauna in this process has been seldom addressed, which hampers our ability to predict the fate of and to manage the spread of ARGs. Here, using high-throughput quantitative polymerase chain reaction (HT-qPCR), we examined the effect of long-term (5-, 8-, and 10-year) fertilization treatments (control, inorganic fertilizers, and mixed fertilizers) on the transfer of ARGs between soil, nematodes, and earthworms. We found distinct fates for ARGs in the nematodes and earthworms, with the former having higher enriched levels of ARGs than the latter. Fertilization impacted the number and abundance of ARGs in soil, and fertilization duration altered the composition of ARGs. Shared ARGs among soil, nematodes, and earthworm guts supported by a fast expectation-maximization microbial source tracking analysis demonstrated the trophic transfer potential of ARGs through this short soil food chain. The transfer of ARGs was reduced by fertilization duration, which was mainly ascribed to the reduction of ARGs in the earthworm gut microbiota. This study identified the transfer of ARGs in the soil-nematode-earthworm food chain as a potential mechanism for a wider dissemination of ARGs in the soil ecosystem.
Did Application of Digested Sewage Sludge As Soil Amendment Alter the Abundances of Antibiotic Resistance Genes and Microbial Communities in Soil and Earthworm Gut?

Abstract:Background Digested sewage sludge has been widely applied as soil amendment for enhanced crop production. However, given that digested sludge is abundant with antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic resistant bacteria, the impact of digested sludge amendment on the abundances of ARGs and microbial communities in soil and soil fauna (e.g., earthworms) remains largely unknown. In this study, the patterns of ARGs and microbial communities in soil and gut of earthworms after 80-days cultivation with digested sewage sludge amendment were investigated to gain insights into this impact. Results The results show that the digested sludge amendment increased the initial abundances of ARGs (e.g., tetA, tetQ, and sulII) in soil. However, after 80-days cultivation, the absolute abundances of target ARGs decreased by 62.3–95.4%. The reduction in ARGs absolute abundances was further enhanced by 31.4–84.7% in the presence of earthworms. In contrast, the relative abundances of some ARGs (e.g., tetA, sulI, and blaTEM−1) in the gut of earthworms increased by 41–130 folds. The microbial community structure of soil was greatly altered because of the introduction of digested sewage sludge at initial, but it recovered to its original pattern after 80-days cultivation. This could be attributed to the gradual attenuation of anaerobic microorganisms under aerobic conditions in soil. In particular, the presence of earthworms further enhanced this phenomenon. The reduction of ARGs in the amended soils was likely attributed to microbial community shift based on redundancy analysis. Several bacterial families (e.g., Saprospiraceae, Chitinophagaceae, and Rhodanobacteraceae) were significantly correlated with the target ARGs. Conclusions Our results reveal that the enrichment of ARGs in soil caused by digested sludge-amendment would recover to their original levels before amendment, highlighting the contribution of earthworms to reducing the ARG abundances in amended soil via shifting the microbial community. However, we also found that the amended soil could increase ARGs abundance in the earthworm gut, which may enhance the potential risk of ARGs spread via food chain. These results may provide a new sight on the control of ARGs occurrence and dissemination in sludge-amended soil ecosystem with consideration of the impact of earthworms.
Influence of Two-Phase Anaerobic Digestion on Fate of Selected Antibiotic Resistance Genes and Class I Integrons in Municipal Wastewater Sludge

Abstract:The response of representative antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) to lab-scale two-phase (acidogenic/methanogenic phase) anaerobic digestion processes under thermophilic and mesophilic conditions was explored. The associated microbial communities and bacterial pathogens were characterized by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. A two-phase thermophilic digestion reduced the presence of tetA, tetG, tetX, sul1, ermB, dfrA1, dfrA12 and intI1 exhibiting 0.1-0.72 log unit removal; in contrast, tetO, tetW, sul3, ermF and blaTEM even increased relative to the feed, and sul2 showed no significant decrease. The acidogenic phase of thermophilic digestion was primarily responsible for reducing the quantity of these genes, while the subsequent methanogenic phase caused a rebound in their quantity. In contrast, a two-phase mesophilic digestion process did not result in reducing the quantity of all ARGs and intI1 except for ermB and blaTEM. Abstract:Organic solid wastes (OSWs) are important reservoirs for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Aerobic composting transforms OSWs into fertilizers. In this study, we investigated ARGs dynamics and their driving mechanisms in three OSW composts: pig manure (PM), kitchen waste (KC), and sewage sludge (SG). The dominant ARGs were different in each OSW, namely tetracycline, aminoglycoside, and macrolide resistance (PM); tetracyclines and aminoglycosides (KC); and sulfonamides (SG). ARGs abundance decreased in PM (71%) but increased in KC (5.9-fold) and SG (1.3-fold). Interestingly, the ARGs abundance was generally similar in all final composts, which was contributed to the similar bacterial community in final composts. In particular, sulfonamide and β-lactam resistant genes removed (100%) in PM, while sulfonamide in KC (38-fold) and tetracycline in SG (5-fold) increased the most. Additionally, ARGs abundance rebounded during the maturation period in all treatments. Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteria were the main ARGs hosts. Several persistent and high-risk genes included tetW, aadA, aadE, tetX, strB, tetA, mefA , intl1, and intl2 . The structural equation models showed ARGs removal was mainly affected by physicochemical parameters and bacterial communities in PM, the ARGs enrichment in KC composting correlated with increased mobile genetic elements (MGEs). In general, thermophilic aerobic composting can inhibit the vertical gene transfer (VGT) of pig manure and horizontal gene transfer (HGT) of sludge, but it increases the HGT of kitchen waste, resulting in a dramatic increase of ARGs in KC compost. More attention should be paid to the ARGs risk of kitchen waste composting.

Abstract:The environmental transmission of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and metal resistance genes (MRGs) exerted devastating threats to global public health, and their interactions with other emerging contaminants (ECs) have raised increasing concern. This study investigated that the abundances of ARGs and MRGs with the predominant type of efflux pump were simultaneously increased (8.4–59.1%) by disinfectant polyhexamethylene guanidine (PHMG) during waste activated sludge (WAS) anaerobic digestion. The aggregation of the same microorganisms ( i.e., Hymenobacter and Comamonas ) and different host bacteria ( i.e., Azoarcus and Thauera ) were occurred upon exposure to PHMG, thereby increasing the co-selection and propagation of MRGs and ARGs by vertical gene transfer. Moreover, PHMG enhanced the process of horizontal gene transfer (HGT), facilitating their co-transmission by the same mobile genetic elements (20.2–223.7%). Additionally, PHMG up-regulated the expression of critical genes ( i.e., glnB , trpG and gspM ) associated with the HGT of ARGs and MRGs ( i.e., two-component regulatory system and quorum sensing) and exocytosis system ( i.e., bacterial secretion system). Structural equation model analysis further verified that the key driver for the simultaneous enrichment of ARGs and MRGs under PHMG stress was microbial community structure. The study gives new insights into the aggravated environmental risks and mechanisms of ECs in sludge digestion system, providing guidance for subsequent regulation and control of ECs.

Abstract:To explore the fate and spreading mechanism of antibiotics resistance genes (ARGs) in antibiotics wastewater system, a laboratory-scale (1.47 L) Expanded Granular Sludge Bed (EGSB) bioreactor was implemented. The operating parameters temperature (T) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) were mainly considered. This result showed the removal of ARGs and COD was asynchronous, and the recovery speed of ARGs removal was slower than that COD removal. The decreasing T was attributed to the high growth rate of ARGs host bacteria, while the shortened HRT could promote the horizontal and vertical gene transfer of ARGs in the sludge. The analysis result of potential bacterial host showed more than half of the potential host bacteria carried 2 or more ARGs and suggested an indirect mechanism of co-selection of multiple ARGs. Phylogenetic Investigation of Communities by Reconstruction of Unobserved States (PICRUSt) was used to investigate the functional characteristics of bacterial community. This result showed the bacterial functional genes contributed 40.41% to the abundance change of ARGs in the sludge, which was higher that of bacterial community. And the function genes of "aromatic hydrocarbon degradation", "Replication, recombination and repair proteins" and "Flagellar assembly" were mainly correlated with the transfer of ARGs in the sludge. This study further revealed the mechanism of ARGs spread in the EGSB system, which would provide new ideas for the development of ARGs reduction technology.
Mitigation effects and microbial mechanism of two ecological earthworms on the uptake of chlortetracycline and antibiotic resistance genes in lettuce

Abstract:The contamination of greenhouse vegetable soils with antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), caused by the application of livestock and poultry manure, is a prominent environmental problem. In this study, the effects of two ecological earthworms (endogeic Metaphire guillelmi and epigeic Eisenia fetida ) on the accumulation and transfer of chlortetracycline (CTC) and ARGs in a soil–lettuce system were studied via pot experiments. The results revealed that earthworm application accelerated the removal of the CTC from the soil and lettuce roots and leaves, with the CTC content reducing by 11.7–22.8 %, 15.7–36.1 %, and 8.93–19.6 % compared with that of the control, respectively. Both earthworms significantly reduced the CTC uptake by lettuce roots from the soil ( P < 0.05) but did not change the CTC transfer efficiency from the roots to leaves. The high-throughput quantitative PCR results showed that the relative abundance of ARGs in the soil and lettuce roots and leaves decreased by 22.4–27.0 %, 25.1–44.1 %, and 24.4–25.4 %, respectively, with the application of earthworms. Earthworm addition decreased the interspecific bacterial interactions and the relative abundance of mobile genetic elements (MGEs), which helped reduce the dissemination of ARGs. Furthermore, some indigenous soil antibiotic degraders ( Pseudomonas , Flavobacterium , Sphingobium , and Microbacterium ) were stimulated by the earthworms. The results of redundancy analysis indicated that the bacterial community composition, CTC residues, and MGEs were the main parameters affecting the distribution of ARGs, accounting for 91.1 % of the total distribution. In addition, the bacterial function prediction results showed that the addition of earthworms reduced the abundance of some pathogenic bacteria in the system. Overall, our findings imply that earthworm application can substantially reduce the accumulation and transmission risk of antibiotics and ARGs in soil–lettuce systems, providing a cost-effective soil bioremediation practice for addressing antibiotic and ARGs contamination to guarantee the safety of vegetables and human health.

Abstract:In modern ecological systems, the overuse and misuse of antibiotics have escalated the prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs), positioning them as emerging environmental contaminants. Notably, composting serves as a sustainable method to recycle agricultural waste into nutrient-rich fertilizer while potentially reducing ARGs and MGEs. This study conducted a 47-day composting experiment using pig manure and corn straw, supplemented with chitin and N-Acetyl-D-glucosamine, to explore the impact of these additives on the dynamics of ARGs and MGEs, and to unravel the interplay between these genetic elements and microbial communities in pig manure composting. Results showed that adding 5% chitin into composting significantly postponed thermophilic phase, yet enhanced the removal efficiency of total ARGs and MGEs by over 20% compared to the control. Additionally, the addition of N-Acetyl-D-glucosamine significantly increased the abundance of tetracycline-resistant and sulfonamide-resistant genes, as well as MGEs. High-throughput sequencing revealed that N-Acetyl-D-glucosamine enhanced bacterial α-diversity, providing diverse hosts for ARGs and MGEs. Resistance mechanisms, predominantly efflux pumps and antibiotic deactivation, played a pivotal role in shaping the resistome of composting process. Co-occurrence network analysis identified the key bacterial phyla Proteobacteria , Firmicutes , Gemmatimonadota , and Myxococcota in ARGs and MGEs transformation and dissemination. Redundancy analysis indicated that physicochemical factors, particularly the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio emerged as critical variables influencing ARGs and MGEs. The findings lay a foundation for the developing microbial regulation method to reduce the risks of ARGs in animal manure composts.

Abstract:Dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) has become a critical threat to public health. Activated sludge, rich in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), is an important pool of ARGs. In this study, mechanisms of conjugation transfer of ARGs induced by EPS, including tightly bound EPS (TBEPS), soluble EPS (SEPS), and loosely bound EPS (LBEPS), were explored in terms of molecular diversities and electron transfer properties of EPS. Conjugation transfer frequency was increased by 9.98-folds (SEPS), 4.21-folds (LBEPS), and 15.75-folds (TBEPS) versus the control, respectively. Conjugation-related core genes involving SOS responses (9 genes), membrane permeability (18 genes), intercellular contact (17 genes), and energy metabolism pathways (13 genes) were all upregulated, especially in the presence of TBEPS. Carbohydrates and aliphatic substances in SEPS and LBEPS were contributors to ARG transfer, via influencing reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation (SEPS) and ROS and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production (LBEPS). TBEPS had the highest redox potential and greatest lability and facilitated electron transfer and alternated respiration between cells, thus promoting ARG transfer by producing ATP. Generally, the chemical molecular characteristics and redox properties of EPS facilitated ARG transfer mainly by influencing lipid peroxidation and ATP, respectively. Environmental Implication Activated sludge serves as a crucial habitat for microorganisms and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) represent a substantial component within activated sludge, persisting throughout the entirety of the wastewater treatment process. This study demonstrated that EPS exposure promoted conjugative transfer of ARGs in ranked order of TBEPS ˃ SEPS ˃ LBEPS in bacterial genus. And mechanisms of conjugation transfer of ARGs induced by EPS were expounded in terms of molecular diversities and electron transfer properties of EPS. Consequently, this study provides a theoretical basis for efficaciously curtailing the dissemination of ARGs in sludge.

Abstract:Hundreds of million tons of food waste (FW) is annually generated from the household sectors. Also, it is regarded as a main conduit for the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the 'human–environment' loop. This paper mainly reviews recent studies on the occurrence and dynamics of ARGs in FW and discusses the ins, outs, and spreads of ARGs by the vermicomposting. Our analysis shows that the concentration of FW-borne ARGs and their major hosts (human pathogens) can be effectively reduced and eliminated in the earthworm guts, respectively, due to the increased bacterial fitness cost for ARG-spreading and earthworm immune responses. Of particular interest, the removal performance could be improved by the measures including agricultural waste co-composting and enforced aeration, which concurrently lead to an elevated vermicomposting loading rate and enhanced quality of compost end-products. Furthermore, our review argues that functional microbial inoculum-feeding possibly results in microbial colonization and stable reproduction in earthworm guts. This proposed optimization approach may be instrumental to contain the spread of ARGs and increase the vermicomposting treatment efficiency at the same time.

Abstract:The prevalence and persistence of antibiotic resistance genes in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is of growing interest, and residual sludge is among the main sources for the release of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Moreover, heavy metals concentrated in dense microbial communities of sludge could potentially favor co-selection of ARGs and metal resistance genes (MRGs). Residual sludge treatment is needed to limit the spread of resistance from WWTPs into the environment. This study aimed to explore the fate of ARGs and MRGs during thermophilic two-phase (acidogenic/methanogenic phase) anaerobic digestion by metagenomic analysis. The occurrence and abundance of mobile genetic elements were also determined based on the SEED database. Among the 27 major ARG subtypes detected in feed sludge, large reductions (> 50%) in 6 ARG subtypes were achieved by acidogenic phase (AP), while 63.0% of the ARG subtypes proliferated in the following methanogenic phase (MP). In contrast, a 2.8-fold increase in total MRG abundance was found in AP, while the total abundance during MP decreased to the same order of magnitude as in feed sludge. The distinct dynamics of ARGs and MRGs during the two-phase anaerobic digestion are noteworthy, and more specific treatments are required to limit their proliferation in the environment.

Abstract:The retention of microplastics in sewage sludge, a reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs), has attracted increasing attention. However, the impact of polyethylene microplastics (PE-MP) on the fate of ARGs and MGEs is far from fully understood in sewage sludge's thermophilic anaerobic digestion process (AD). The present study demonstrated that PE-MP with the size of 40–48 μm at concentrations of 50, 100, and 200 particles/g-TS could enlarge total ARGs abundance. Meanwhile, a significant positive (r = 0.96, p < 0.05) correlation was observed between PE-MP concentration and total MGEs content. Microbial analysis revealed the enrichment of some functional genus under the stress of PE-MP, which might be the potential host of ARGs and MGEs. The relative abundance of acetogens Thermoanaerobacter increased from 27.60 % to 32.80 % and hydrolytic bacteria Caldicoprobacter enriched by 28.03 % when PE-MP content increased from zero to 200 particles/g-TS. The potential hosts were subsequently identified through co-occurrence networks, some of which were identified as pathogens. Strong positive correlations between PE-MP, ARGs, and MGEs were observed using redundancy analysis and correlation analysis. Additionally, the structural equation model indicated the direct and indirect influence of PE-MP on the abundance of ARGs and MGEs. MGEs could enhance the acquisition and dissemination of ARGs directly. Taking together, our findings deciphered the contribution of PE-MP to the spread of ARGs and MGEs in the sludge AD process, which might pose risks to human health and should be considered during sewage sludge disposal.

Abstract:Vermicomposting is an effective technology for disposing of municipal sewage sludge and green wastes; however, it can contain heavy metals (HMs) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs); thus, the application of the final product to land is risky. In this study, zeolite (ZL), bamboo biochar (BB), and diatomite (DM) were individually mixed with dewatered sludge and green waste at a rate of 5% (w/w) to investigate their effects on earthworm activities, physicochemical characteristics of vermicompost, HMs and ARGs patterns, and microbial community structure during vermicomposting. The results showed that ZL, BB, and DM stimulated the growth and fecundity of earthworms, accompanied by higher degradation of organic matter, nutritional value, humification level, and maturity of final products. The distribution rate of OXI-Zn and RES-Pb in vermicomposts could be increased by 3.48%−11.53% and 8.64%−17.53%, respectively, under all additives addition treatments in comparison to the control treatment. Moreover, the addition of ZL, BB, and DM significantly enhanced the reduction rate of intI-1 (2.45%−20.86%), sul1 (8.16%−26.46%), sul2 (18.88%−29.55%), ermB (30.25%−40.08%), ermC (19.25%−28.53%), gryA (22.99%−30.04%), parC (18.75%−20.46%), qnrS (11.58%−28.96%) and tetC (18.99%−21.57%) genes in vermicomposts, as compared to control without additives. ZL, BB, and DM addition optimized the bacterial community by decreasing the abundances of the potential ARGs hosts, such as Steroidobacter and Acidibacter , enhancing important organic-decomposing bacteria, such as cellulomonas and Chryseolinea . This study newly suggests that ZL, BB, and DM addition is beneficial for the passivation of Zn and Pb and decreases the dissemination risk of ARGs in vermicomposting dewatered sludge and green waste.

Abstract:Diatomite (DE) has been used for nitrogen conservation during the composting of feces but its effects on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and the associated mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, DE was added at three different proportions (0%, 4%, and 8%) to swine manure during composting. The results showed that adding DE helped to reduce the abundances of ARGs and the maximum decrease (88.99%) occurred with the highest dose. DE amendment promoted the transformation of reducible copper into a more stable form, i.e., the residual fraction, which reduced the selective pressure imposed by copper and further decreased the abundances of ARGs. Tn916/1545 and intI1 were critical genetic components related to ARGs, and thus the reductions in the abundances of ARGs may be attributed to the suppression of horizontal transfer due to the decreased abundances of mobile genetic elements (MGEs). The microbial community structure (bacterial abundance and diversity) played key role in the evolution of ARGs. DE could enhance the competition between hosts and non-hosts of ARGs by increasing the bacterial community diversity. Compared with CK, DE amendment optimized the bacterial community by reducing the abundances of the potential hosts of ARGs and pathogens such as Corynebacterium, thereby improving the safety of the compost product. In addition, KEGG function predictions revealed that adding DE inhibited the metabolic pathway and genes related to ARGs. Thus, composting with 8% DE can reduce the risk of ARG transmission and improve the practical value for agronomic applications.

Abstract:This study mainly investigated the environmental risks of polyhexamethylene guanidine (PHMG) occurred in waste activated sludge (WAS) on the antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) spread during anaerobic fermentation, and disclosed the critical mechanisms. The total ARGs abundance was increased by 32.2-46.4% at different stressing levels of PHMG. The main resistance mechanism categories of ARGs shifted to the target alternation and efflux pump. PHMG disintegrated WAS structure and increased the cell permeability, which benefitted the mobile genetic elements (MGEs) release and horizontal transfer of ARGs. Besides, PHMG induced the enrichment of potential ARGs hosts ( i.e. , Burkholderia , Bradyrhizobium and Aeromonas ). Moreover, PHMG upregulated the metabolic pathways ( i.e., two-component system, quorum sensing, and ATP-binding cassette transporters) and critical genes expression ( i.e., metN , metQ , rpfF , rstA and rstB ) related with ARGs generation and dissemination. Structural equation model analysis revealed that microbial community structure was the predominant contributor to the ARGs propagation.

Abstract:Abstract Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have been diffusely detected in several kinds of organic solid waste, such as livestock manure, sludge, antibiotic fermentation residues, and food waste, thus attracting great attention. Aerobic composting, which is an effective, harmless treatment method for organic solid waste to promote recycling, has been identified to also aid in ARG reduction. However, the effect of composting in removing ARGs from organic solid waste has recently become controversial. Thus, this article summarizes and reviews the research on ARGs in relation to composting in the past 5 years. ARGs in organic solid waste could spread in different environmental media, including soil and the atmosphere, which could widen environmental risks. However, the conventional composting technology had limited effect on ARGs removal from organic solid waste. Improved composting processes, such as hyperthermophilic temperature composting, could effectively remove ARGs, and the HGT of ARGs and the microbial communities are identified as vital influencing factors. Currently, during the composting process, ARGs were mainly affected by three response pathways, (I) “Microenvironment-ARGs”; (II) “Microenvironment-microorganisms-ARGs”; (III) “Microorganisms-horizontal gene transfer-ARGs”, respectively. Response pathway II had been studied the most which was believed that microbial community was an important factor affecting ARGs. In response pathway III, mainly believed that MGEs played an important role and paid less attention to eARGs. Further research on the role and impact of eARGs in ARGs may be considered in the future. It aims to provide support for further research on environmental risk control of ARGs in organic solid waste.
