Abstract:A combination of semipermeable membrane-covered composting systems and greenhouses was used to investigate the effects of different insulation systems on the aerobic fermentation of mixed raw materials and changes in the characteristics of fermentation feedstock. The combination of semipermeable membrane-covered and greenhouse systems increased the peak temperature by 6.53 °C, the average fermentation temperature by 28.2%, and extended the duration of the effective high-temperature stage of fermentation (temperature ≥ 50 °C) by 14 days. The decomposition percentage of solid organic matter in the enhanced group was 11.8% higher than that in the normal group, and the fermentation cycle was shortened by 5 days. The duplication provided by using both the semipermeable membrane-covered and greenhouse systems was conducive to the harmless treatment of raw materials, promoted the maturity and efficiency of composting, and reduced the content of biologically toxic substances. This study provides a theoretical basis for improving the efficiency of aerobic fermentation and the safe treatment of solid waste.

Abstract:Vermicomposting utilizes the synergistic effect of earthworms with microorganisms to accelerate the stabilization of organic matter in biowastes. Nevertheless, the exact mechanism behind the maturity of vermicompost and the growth of earthworms exposed to biochar of varying particle sizes remains unclear. This study presents an investigation of the effect of biochar particle size on earthworm ( Eisenia fetida ) survival, microbial diversity, and the quality of vermicompost products. To address these issues, pelletized dewatered sludge samples from a municipal sewage treatment plant were amended with pine-based biochar with particle sizes of 1–2 mm, 25–75 μm, 200 nm, and 60 nm as the substrate for vermicomposting. This study revealed that the addition of millimeter-scale biochar and micron-scale biochar significantly promoted the degradation of organic matter since the organic matter in the treatment with 1–2 mm biochar at the end of the vermicomposting experiment decreased by 12.6%, which was equivalent to a 1.9-fold increase compared with that of the control. Excessive nanopowdering of nanobiochar significantly affected the survival of earthworms and led to 24.4–33.3% cumulative mortality, while millimeter-scale (mm) biochar and micron-scale (μm) biochar achieved zero mortality. The findings of this study could be used for evaluating the potential impact of nanoscale biochar to earthworms and guiding biochar-augmented vermicomposting.

Abstract:Vermicomposting is an efficient bioconversion technology for recycling nutrients from organic waste materials. The biodegradability of raw materials has a significant impact on the earthworm transformation product. However, the management of carbon bioavailability is often overlooked during the vermicomposting process due to the varying degradability of C-rich source in different organic waste. This research aims to investigate the impact of different bioavailable carbon compositions on vermicomposting and to develop a strategy for efficient carbon management. The study involved systematic vermicomposting using four different biodegradable carbon sources (pineapple peels, rice straw, tomato straw, and sawdust) with varying carbon‑nitrogen ratios (ranging from 24 to 42). The earthworm production and vermicompost quality were comprehensively evaluated, along with the influence of carbon components on microbial community structure. The results indicated that the optimal vermicomposting treatments were achieved at PCM24, RCM30, TCM30, and MCM30 treatments. Maintaining an approximate ratio of 1:(0.5-1.3) between available and recalcitrant carbon components based on the optimal carbon‑nitrogen ratio was found to be optimal for regulating vermicomposting products. Increasing the proportion of available carbon enhanced the quality of vermicompost fertilizer, while a higher proportion of recalcitrant carbon could improve earthworm biomass production efficiency. Labile carbon proportion I (LCP1) and available carbon component (ACC) were identified as key indicators in influencing the formation of microbial community structure. Different carbon compositions led to the specific development and formation of microbial communities, further resulting in significant variations in vermicompost quality under the mediation of microbes. This study, for the first time, clarifies the impact of vermicomposting performance and microbial community from the perspective of carbon bioavailability, which is of great significance for the oriented regulation the vermicomposting efficiency and product in practice.

Abstract:Impact of different biochars supplemented (10% w/w) to promote vermicomposting of sewage sludge (SS) and kitchen waste (KW) mixture (SS + KW, 70:30) was studied on the growth, reproduction and survival of earthworms, and ultimately the quality of vermicompost. Four types of biochar used as secondary material for preincubation (16 days) and vermicomposting (30 days) were: pine tree biochar (PTB), poplar plant biochar (PPB), wetland plant biochar (WPB) and yard waste biochar (YWB). Preincubation and vermicomposting of biomass mixture were undertaken in 60 L and 2 L capacity round-shaped bioreactors, respectively. Samples of biomass undergoing degradation were drawn after every 2 days during preincubation and with 5 days interval during vermicomposting to analyze them for plant nutrients and heavy metals contents. Amendment of vermicompost substrate (SS + KW) with biochars; PTB, PPB, WPB and YWB increased the reproduction rate of earthworms (Eisenia fetida) by 44.6, 53.9, 29.3 and 38.8%, respectively as compared to control (no biochar, NB). There has been significant reduction in total content of Cd (0.2-5.1%), Cr (7.3-10.8%), Cu (3.1-7.4%). Mn (32-8.4%), Pb (9.0-45.9%) and Zn (1.1-5.7%) by the application of different biochars as compared to NB after vermicomposting. The SEM/EDS images also reflected reduced concentration of these heavy metals in the final vermicompost as compared to initial mixtures. Progressively, biochar amendments increased the concentration of all macronutrients, viz., TN (15.8-31.0%), TP (8.6-9.9%), TK (2.8-17.3%), Ca (4.1-9.9%) and Mg (0.8-122%); while, reduced the pH (1.9-2.3%), content of Na (6.6-22.3%), TOC (6.6-15.4%), OM (5.0-82%) and C:N ratio (2.6-18.9%). Earthworm body accumulation factor (BAF) of heavy metals was: Cd > Zn > Pb > Cu > Mn > Cr at the termination stage of experiment. In conclusion, amending the SS + KW mixture with 10% (w/w) PPB for vermicomposting rendered higher count of cocoons, growth rate and reproduction rate of earthworms, which ultimately produce nutrients-rich vermicompost lower in heavy metals. Abstract:This study evaluated the independent and combined effects of biochar and microbial agents on food waste composting. The results indicated that combined addition increased the peak temperature to 63.5 degrees C and extended the thermophilic periods to 8 days, resulting in the highest organic matter degradation rate (12.7%). Analysis of enzymatic activity indicated that combined addition increased urease and dehydrogenase activity by 22.9% and 26.5%. Furthermore, the degradation of volatile fatty acids also increased by 37.4% with combined addition. Microbial analysis demonstrated that combined addition effectively increased the relative abundances of Enterobacter, Sphingobacterium and Aspergillus, which could be attributed to the optimal environment provided by biochar and stimulation of microbial agents. Moreover, correlation analysis showed a strong interaction between the microbial community and environment with combined addition. In general, combined addition could be beneficial for composting based on the synergistic effects of biochar and inoculation on microorganism.

Abstract:Composting was an effective technique to treat kitchen waste into high-quality fertilizer or soil amendment. During the composting process of kitchen waste, different degradation rates of carbon and nitrogen resulted in carbon loss, nitrogen emission and low product quality. Consequently, the aim of this study was to investigate the mechanisms and effects of biochar (5 %, 10 % and 15 %) on synergistic conversion of nitrogen and carbon and humification processes in kitchen waste composting. The findings revealed that the addition of 10 % and 15 % biochar prolonged the thermophilic phase (>55°C) by a minimum of three days compared to CK. Additionally, the final NH 4 + -N concentration in the 10 % and 15 % treatment groups exhibited a 66.7 % reduction in comparison to the control. Besides, the 15 % addition proved more efficacious in reducing the NH 4 + -N content The increase in biochar facilitates the adsorption of ammonia nitrogen and influences the structure of the microbial community, especially Bacteroides and Pseudoxanthomonas , thus promoting nitrogen mineralisation and humification, which provides energy and carbon for the survival and metabolism of more microorganisms. The compost with 15 % biochar exhibited higher levels of SBR1031 , resulting in a 73.8 % increase in the conversion of nitrogen to NO 3 - -N compared to the control. The aforementioned behaviour facilitates a synergistic conversion of nitrogen and carbon. Therefore, the addition of biochar promotes synergistic carbon and nitrogen transformations in terms of nitrogen conservation, organic matter decomposition, microbial species and their interactions, which is essential for the production of value-added compost fertilizers.

Abstract:The inhibition of volatile fatty acid (VFA) production is an important factor affecting biogas (methane) production in the anaerobic co-digestion systems comprising food waste and sewage sludge. In this study, batch experiments were conducted at medium temperature (36 ± 0.5 °C), during which the biogas production index and material–liquid characteristic parameters of the anaerobic digestion systems containing different concentrations of iron-loaded biochar (Fe-BC) were monitored. The cumulative biogas production data were analyzed using a modified Gompertz kinetic model to determine the effect of the Fe-BC on biogas production in the anaerobic co-digestion system. Studies have shown that addition of Fe-BC does not significantly influence the hydrolysis and acidification stages of anaerobic co-digestion, but does have a significant effect on promoting methanogenesis by alleviating the accumulation of VFAs and improving both the buffer capacity of the system and the efficiency of substrate-to-biogas conversion. When the Fe-BC concentration was 16 g·L−1, the cumulative biogas production reached 329.42 mL·g-VS−1, which was 49.7% higher than the blank group, and the lag period was 3.55 d, which was 42% shorter than the blank group. Mechanistic studies have shown that Fe-BC increased the concentration of coenzyme F420 and the conductivity of the digestate in the co-digestion system, which increased the activity of methanogens in the anaerobic digestion system, thereby promoting methanogenesis.

Abstract:The disposal of Chinese medicinal herbal residues (CMHRs) derived from Chinese medicine extraction poses a significant environmental challenge. Aerobic composting presents a sustainable treatment method, yet optimizing nutrient conversion remains a critical concern. This study investigated the effect and mechanism of biochar addition on nitrogen and phosphorus transformation to enhance the efficacy and quality of compost products. The findings reveal that incorporating biochar considerably enhanced the process of nutrient conversion. Specifically, biochar addition promoted the retention of bioavailable organic nitrogen and reduced nitrogen loss by 28.1 %. Meanwhile, adding biochar inhibited the conversion of available phosphorus to non-available phosphorus while enhancing its conversion to moderately available phosphorus, thereby preserving phosphorus availability post-composting. Furthermore, the inclusion of biochar altered microbial community structure and fostered organic matter retention and humus formation, ultimately affecting the modification of nitrogen and phosphorus forms. Structural equation modeling revealed that microbial community had a more pronounced impact on bioavailable organic nitrogen, while humic acid exerted a more significant effect on phosphorus availability. This research provides a viable approach and foundation for regulating the levels of nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients during composting, serving as a valuable reference for the development of sustainable utilization technologies pertaining to CMHRs.

Abstract:Aerobic composting is one of the methods for the resource utilization of submerged plant residues. This study investigated the effects of biochar, wetland sediments and microbial agents added individually or combined on the humification process, lignocellulose degradation and microbial communities during Ceratophyllum demersum and Potamogeton wrightii composting. The results showed that the addition of wetland sediment and biochar was found to significantly elevate the composting temperature and humification of compost products. The average content of lignin in wetland sediment and/or biochar treatments was 12.2–13.5%, which was higher than the control group (10.9–11.45%). Compared with the organic matter (19.4%) and total nitrogen concentration (35.3%) of compost treated with complex microbial agent treatments, the homemade microbial agents significantly increased the values by 22.1% and 41.0%, respectively. By comparing the differences in microbial communities among different treatments, the sediments and homemade agents demonstrated greater increases in activity and diversity of lignocellulose degradation-related microbes, especially for Truepera and Actinomarinale. Humus component and temperature were the most critical parameters influencing the changes in the bacterial community. Based on these results, a combination of biochar and homemade agents was a promising additive for an effective composting strategy, and sediment was identified as a potential control of bacterial diversity in wetland plant compost.

Abstract:Biochar can accelerate the degradation and mineralization of organic matter during vermicomposting of sludge and the resulted vermicompost is termed as vermi-char containing active enzymes and microorganisms. However, the mechanisms by which biochars affect vermicomposting of the dewatered sludge during gut digestion of earthworms remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of biochar on the degradation pathways of organic matter and the involved active microorganisms in dewatered sludge during gut digestion of earthworms. The earthworms Eisenia fetida were fed on three sludge substrates; 1) sludge mixed with 5% corncob biochar, 2) sludge mixed 5% rice husk biochar, and 3) sludge without biochar. The results showed that dissolved organic carbon significantly decreased by 5.65%–21.81% after the 5-day gut digestion of earthworms (P < 0.05) and that biochar addition could accelerate the decomposition of aromatic protein-like substances. Contrarily, the nitrate in earthworms casting with biochars significantly increased by 47.32%–122.64% (P < 0.05) compared with the control. The numbers of active bacteria and eukaryotes in earthworm castings with biochars significantly enhanced by 1.34–1.45 times and 0.45–5.91 times, respectively, than the control (P < 0.05). Active Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes dominated the castings with biochars significantly enriched by 76.18%–88.83% and 4.02%–18.59% (P < 0.05), respectively, compared to control. As for eukaryotes, the biochars amendment increased Cercozoa abundance by 114.23%–136.31% but decreased Annelida by 55.61%–75.88% in the castings. The partial least squares path model revealed that the biochars could change the content and structure of organic matter in earthworm castings during vermicomposting of sludge by affecting environmental factors, microbial abundance, and microbial community composition.

Abstract:The addition of biochar and the use of membrane coverings are two methods used in aerobic composting of agricultural waste. The effectiveness of each of these two methods on compost quality and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions was tested in the laboratory. The results showed that both methods increased the maximum composting temperature and extended the thermophilic period. The germination index of biochar-treated compost and membrane-covered compost reached 70% on the 18th day, which was 12 days earlier than the corresponding value in the control group. The products from the biochar-treated compost had higher pH and lower electrical conductivity, compared with the product of the control group, indicating that these products are more suitable for acidic soils. In terms of greenhouse gas reduction, both methods were found to reduce the emissions of CH4 and N2O from composting. The addition of biochar had a better emission reduction effect on N2O, whereas the membrane covering technique yielded a better effect on CH4 emission reduction. The results of this study provide technical support for managed aerobic composting to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Neutrino astronomy with IceCube and

Abstract:Since the early 1990s, the South Pole has been the site of the construction of the world’s first under-ice Cherenkov neutrino telescopes AMANDA and IceCube. The AMANDA detector was completed in 2000, and its successor IceCube, a kilometre scale neutrino detector, began construction in 2005. Completion of IceCube is scheduled for 2011. This paper will give an overview of the history, construction, latest physics results and potential of these detectors. 1. The appeal of neutrino astronomy The road to a kilometre scale neutrino detector, pioneered by the DUMAND collaboration, has seen the operation of the first generation experiments, AMANDA and Lake Baikal, as well as initial construction and planning for IceCube, ANTARES, NESTOR, NEMO and KM3NET. The discovery of neutrinos with these detectors will hopefully extend and complement the knowledge of the universe to date gained through cosmic ray and gamma ray observations. While the nature and location of the cosmic ray sources are unknown, there are many confirmed sources of TeV gamma-rays. If one of these turned out to also be a neutrino source, then a hadronic accelerator central engine might be driving cosmic ray, gamma and neutrino production [2]. A neutrino detector like IceCube or AMANDA uses an array of photomultipliers to record Cherenkov light from through-going muons, or from point-like shower (“cascade”) events. Muons result from charged current interactions of neutrinos in the detector volume, or in the surrounding ice and rock. Cascade events result from charged and neutral current interactions of all neutrino flavours. The backgrounds to a search for a flux of high-energy extra-terrestrial neutrinos at the earth are atmospheric muons and neutrinos from the interaction of cosmic rays in the earth’s atmosphere. The atmospheric muons are eliminated by looking for events moving upward through the detector – only neutrinos can penetrate the earth. A small fraction of the large downgoing muon flux will be falsely reconstructed in the upward direction. These are removed by tight requirements on the fitted track. After atmospheric muons are eliminated, there is a flux of atmospheric neutrinos seen in a detector. This can be used as a calibration test beam to check the understanding of the detector, or be used to look for new neutrino physics. A search for point sources of neutrinos is made by looking for an excess of events from a direction in the sky. Electromagnetic observations by other detectors may provide information to reduce the time over which such a search is made for instance in a search for neutrinos correlated with a gamma-ray burst. One can also look for a diffuse excess of neutrinos from the sum of all sources in the universe. Since the extra-terrestrial flux predictions tend to go as dN/dE ∼ E, one looks for higher energy events in the detector to separate them from the more steep atmospheric neutrino spectrum (dN/dE ∼ E). 2. Physics results from AMANDA The first detection of muon Cherenkov radiation in polar ice was made in Greenland in 1990 [3], using three photomultipliers deployed to a depth of about 200 metres. Following this success, similar tests were made at the South Pole over the next years, with the AMANDA-A detector deployed in 1993-94 [4]. Construction of the presently operating AMANDA detector took place from 1995 to 2000, over which time 677 optical modules were deployed over 19 strings, to depths ranging from 1500 to 2000 metres. The properties of the polar ice, critical for understanding of the detector, have been measured using light sources in the array [5]. Although most of AMANDA used analogue signal technology, digital technology, eventually chosen for IceCube, was tested on one string [6]. 2.1. Atmospheric neutrinos While three neutrino candidates were observed with the first four strings of AMANDA [7], the first compelling evidence of high-energy atmospheric neutrinos came from the 10 string 1997 data set, where 16 upgoing events were left after data reduction [8]. Dramatic improvements in the analysis techniques [9] increased this number to about 300 [10, 11]. Over the entire life of AMANDA-II, many thousands of atmospheric neutrinos have now been observed [12, 13]. These are the highest energy neutrinos ever observed. The observed rate is consistent with the uncertainties in theoretical predictions [14, 15]. A regularised unfolding technique has been used to make a best-fit to the originating energy spectrum; again consistency with expectation is seen [16]. The agreement of the atmospheric neutrino measurements with expectations shows that the detector is working as expected.

Abstract:Vermicomposting is an effective technology for disposing of municipal sewage sludge and green wastes; however, it can contain heavy metals (HMs) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs); thus, the application of the final product to land is risky. In this study, zeolite (ZL), bamboo biochar (BB), and diatomite (DM) were individually mixed with dewatered sludge and green waste at a rate of 5% (w/w) to investigate their effects on earthworm activities, physicochemical characteristics of vermicompost, HMs and ARGs patterns, and microbial community structure during vermicomposting. The results showed that ZL, BB, and DM stimulated the growth and fecundity of earthworms, accompanied by higher degradation of organic matter, nutritional value, humification level, and maturity of final products. The distribution rate of OXI-Zn and RES-Pb in vermicomposts could be increased by 3.48%−11.53% and 8.64%−17.53%, respectively, under all additives addition treatments in comparison to the control treatment. Moreover, the addition of ZL, BB, and DM significantly enhanced the reduction rate of intI-1 (2.45%−20.86%), sul1 (8.16%−26.46%), sul2 (18.88%−29.55%), ermB (30.25%−40.08%), ermC (19.25%−28.53%), gryA (22.99%−30.04%), parC (18.75%−20.46%), qnrS (11.58%−28.96%) and tetC (18.99%−21.57%) genes in vermicomposts, as compared to control without additives. ZL, BB, and DM addition optimized the bacterial community by decreasing the abundances of the potential ARGs hosts, such as Steroidobacter and Acidibacter , enhancing important organic-decomposing bacteria, such as cellulomonas and Chryseolinea . Biochar — An effective additive for improving quality and reducing ecological risk of compost: A global meta-analysis

Abstract:Biochar is considered as a promising additive with multi-benefits to compost production. However, how the biochar properties and composting conditions affect the composting process and quality and ecological risk of compost is still unclear. In the present study, we conducted a global meta-analysis based on 876 observations from 84 studies. Overall, regardless of biochar properties and composting conditions, biochar addition could significantly increase the pH (5.90%), germination index (26.6%), contents of nitrate nitrogen (56.6%), total nitrogen (9.50%), and total potassium (10.1%), and degree of polymerization (29.4%) while decrease the electrical conductivity (-5.70%), contents of ammonium nitrogen (-33.7%), bioavailable zinc (-22.9%), and bioavailable copper (-38.6%), and emissions of ammonia (-44.2%), nitrous oxide (-68.4%), and methane (-61.7%). Other compost indicators, including the carbon to nitrogen ratio and total phosphorus content, were found to be insignificantly affected by biochar addition. The responses of tested compost indicators affected by the biochar properties and composting conditions were further explored, based on which the addition of straw biochars at a rate of 10-15% was recommended due to its greater potential to improve quality of compost and reduce its ecological risk. Combining the results of linear regression analysis and structural equation model, the increase in compost pH caused by biochar addition was identified as the key mechanism for the increased nutrient content and decreased heavy metal bioavailability. These results could guide us to choose suitable kinds of biochar or develop engineered biochars with specific functionality to realize an optimal compost production mode.

Abstract:The manure–compost–soil process is the main avenue for using agricultural livestock waste. Biochar not only impacts the composting process but also enhances the soil's organic matter and nitrogen content when applied with compost. This paper explores the profound impact of biochar as an additive on the manure–compost–soil process, uncovering novel mechanisms driving enhanced soil health and bacterial succession. The basic physicochemical properties (organic matter, total nitrogen, etc.) and microbial structure of the composting and soil samples were analyzed. Biochar additive increased the C/N ratio and the total carbon content of the compost. Biochar, compost, and biochar-based compost improved the total carbon and organic matter of the soil. After high-temperature composting, Saccharomonospora (from 2.68% to 0.80%), Atopostipes (from 5.71% to 0.13%), and Lactobacillus (from 5.27% to 0.04%) were almost eliminated. Lysobacter, Glutamicibacter, and Streptomyces were the dominant genera in the soil samples, promoting plant growth. Nocardiopsis, Saccharomonospora, Bacillus, and Oceanobacillus dominated the genera in the whole manure–compost–soil process. Thus, composting could eliminate the toxic or negative bacteria directly deposited into soil by manure. Those genera arising from compost or biochar-based compost in the soil could contribute to organic matter's cycle.

Abstract:Conventional composting faces challenges of nitrogen loss, product instability, and limited humic substance formation. This study investigated the effects of nanoscale biochars (nano-BCs) derived from rice straw (nano-RSB) and corn stover (nano-CSB) on manure composting. A randomized design with five treatments was used: control, regular biochars (RSB and CSB), and nano-BCs. Nano-BCs, especially nano-CSB, significantly improved compost maturity and reduced phytotoxicity, achieving a 146.20 % germination index. They increased total nitrogen (55.09-63.64 %) and phosphorus (10.25-12.33 %) retention, reduced NH4+-N loss, and promoted nitrification. Nano-CSB showed the highest final NO3--N content (8.63 g/kg). Bacterial richness and diversity increased by 25-30 % in nano-BC treatments, with selective enrichment of beneficial species. The unique properties of nano-BCs, including high surface area and microporous structure, improved nutrient retention and compost quality. Nano-BCs offers a promising solution for sustainable waste management and high-quality compost production in agriculture, significantly enhancing nutrient retention and microbial community regulation during composting process.

Abstract:Biochar was derived from rice straw pyrolyzed at 400°C, and biochar was added to the excess sludge at the ratio of 10% DS, 25% DS, and 50% DS as a supplementary skeleton for sludge Fenton pre-treatment. Rice husk biochar mixed with fungus residue as compost conditioner. In this study, we explored the effects of seven groups of composting materials on the composting effect and fertilizer quality under different pre-treatment methods of Fenton-pretreated sludge cake and conventional dewatered sludge cake, and different biochar additions. Specifically, we conducted a 22-day composting experiment using a composting reactor to investigate the effect of rice husk biochar combined with Fenton oxidation on the physicochemical properties of sludge composting. The results of this study showed that the FB50 group significantly increased the composting rate. Nutrient analysis showed that the FB50 group was rich in fertilizer nutrients, such as available phosphorus, and alkali-hydrolyzable nitrogen content increased. Heavy metals (Cu, Cd, Cr, Pb, Zn, Ni) met China's 'Agricultural Sludge Pollutant Control Standard' GB 4284-2018 Grade A standard, with obvious passivation and significantly reduced bioavailability. All these results suggested that biochar coupled with Fenton oxidation was more beneficial to sludge composting. GRAPHICAL

Abstract:Biochar amendment for compost stabilization of divergent biowastes is gaining considerable attention due to environmental, agronomic and economic benefits. Research to date exhibits its favorable physico-chemical characteristics, viz. greater porosity, surface area, amount of functional groups, and cation exchange capacity (CEC), which allow interface with main nutrient cycles, favor microbial activities during composting, and improve the reproduction of earthworms during vermicomposting. Biochar amendment during composting and vermicomposting of biowastes boosts physico-chemical properties of compost mixture, microbial activities and organic matter degradation; and reduces nitrogen loss and emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs). It also improves the quality of final compost by increasing concentration of plant available nutrients, enhancing maturity, decreasing composting duration and reducing the toxicity of compost. Due to these characteristics, biochar could be considered a beneficial additive for the stabilization of different biowastes during composting and vermicomposting processes. Hence, good quality vermicompost, efficient recycling and management of biowastes could be achieved by addition of biochar through composting and vermicomposting.

Abstract:Sewage sludge and kitchen refuse are ubiquitously mounting wastes with high organic load, which if reprocessed they could salvage the environment. Reckoned with this certitude, an incubating study was initiated on sequential preincubation of sewage sludge with kitchen waste in 100:0, 70:30, 50:50, and 30:70 ratios for 16 days ensued by vermicomposting of 30 days using Eisenia fetida. Concentration of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn) in the biosolid mixtures increased during preincubation but reduced progressively through vermicomposting due to bioaccumulation of these metals in the earthworm tissues. Earthworm growth parameters data reflected that sewage sludge and kitchen waste mixture with 70:30 ratio increased the number of cocoons (10.6%), biomass (8.2%), growth rate (8.3%), reproduction rate (12.2%), and decreased their mean mortality rate (80.1%) as compared to that in sole sewage sludge (control). Results of chemical analysis and SEM/EDS imaging, showed that alkalinity, organic carbon, C/N ratio, organic matter and concentration of trace elements (Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn) reduced while macronutrients (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) increased in the final vermicompost as compared to that in initial mixtures. The FT-IR analysis also revealed that various biochemical functional groups underwent biodegradation during combined preincubation-vermicomposting. Bioaccumulation factor (BAF) of all trace elements in the earthworm tissues was higher with 70:30 ratio of substrates, with the trend of Cd > Zn > Cu > Mn > Pb > Cr. Hence, this study concludes that combined preincubation-vermicomposting is the most efficient and ecofriendly technique for biodegradation, stabilization, and conversion of sewage sludge and kitchen waste into organic fertilizer. The nutrient rich vermicompost can be safely used as horticultural substrate and soil conditioner for efficient management of degraded soils. Finally, combined preincubation-vermicomposting is a sustainable system of recycling the sewage sludge along with kitchen waste.
