Abstract:Staphylococcus species are amongst the bacteria that cause bovine mastitis worldwide, whereby they produce a wide range of protein toxins, virulence factors, and antimicrobial-resistant properties which are enhancing the pathogenicity of these organisms. This study aimed to detect Staphylococcus spp. from the milk of cattle with subclinical mastitis using MALDI-TOF MS and 16S rRNA PCR as well as screening for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and virulence genes. Our results uncovered that from 166 sampled cows, only 33.13% had subclinical mastitis after initial screening, while the quarter-level prevalence was 54%. Of the 50 cultured bacterial isolates, MALDI-TOF MS and 16S rRNA PCR assay and sequencing identified S. aureus as the dominant bacteria by 76%. Furthermore, an AMR susceptibility test showed that 86% of the isolates were resistant to penicillin, followed by ciprofloxacin (80%) and cefoxitin (52%). Antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes showed that 16% of the isolates carried the mecA gene, while 52% of the isolates carried the Lg G-binding region gene, followed by coa (42%), spa (40%), hla (38%), and hlb (38%), whereas sea and bap genes were detected in 10% and 2% of the isolates, respectively. The occurrence of virulence factors and antimicrobial resistance profiles highlights the need for appropriate strategies to control the spread of these pathogens.

Abstract:This study aimed to assess the impact of S. aureus as well as Non-aureus Staphylococci and Mammaliicocci (NASM) subclinical mastitis-causing in the economic return in dairy herds. Data were gathered from the databases of five dairy herds located in the Agreste region of Pernambuco state, Northeastern Brazil, over a period of three consecutive months. A total of 155 mammary quarters from 155 healthy cows were categorized into the healthy group. Meanwhile, 257 mammary quarters from 187 cows that tested positive for either S. aureus or NASM were categorized into the infected group. The effect of mammary quarter infection in economic return was estimated using milk payment criteria on milk samples from healthy vs. infected cows based on a linear mixed model. Milk yield and milk price influenced the economic return, and both varied according to factors like herd, parity, stage of lactation, period of analysis, and the type of pathogen causing subclinical mastitis. There was a reduction in the average economic return caused by NASM infection (by 0.41 to 0.65 US$/cow/day) and S. aureus infection (by 0.25 to 0.36 US$/cow/day), when considering the effect of the pathogen over time for 1 and ≥ 2 infected quarters. Although no significant differences were observed in economic return between healthy cows and those infected with NASM or S. aureus , it is important to collect data on these pathogens for a more precise assessment of the economic impact of subclinical mastitis and for developing enhanced approaches for prevention and control.

Abstract:ABSTRACT: The genus Mycoplasma includes more than 200 bacterial species that cause disease in animals. It is responsible for causing mastitis in bovines and may be related to other manifestations, such as arthritis and pneumonia in calves and heifers. The present study aimed to detect Mycoplasma bovis isolated from milk samples of bovine clinical mastitis, and to compare the isolation rates in two culture media: Hayflick and SP4. An initial screening was performed in order to detect the presence of the class Mollicutes in 1166 milk samples from clinical mastitis by the conventional Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technique. According to the 1166 milk samples evaluated, 8.6% (100/1166) were positive to class Mollicutes. Regarding molecular analyses, 1.1% (13/1166) of conventional PCR for positive M. bovis was obtained and 0.9% (11/1166) in real-time PCR. The results of the microbiological culture of the 100 samples previously screened demonstrated that 6% (6/100) of colony growth have been developed when using the Hayflick medium, and 11% (11/100) when using the SP4 medium (including the positive on Hayflick medium). Concerning the 11 isolates obtained in the microbiological culture, conventional PCR confirmed M. bovis in nine of them, and two cultures were negative. In the phylogenetic analysis of the isolates, all of them were grouped in M. bovis and M. agalactiae clusters. The results confirmed the importance of the presence of M. bovis in the etiology of bovine clinical mastitis and reinforced the need for further studies to elucidate other Mycoplasma species that may be involved in bovine clinical mastitis in Brazil.
Detection of Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae and Escherichia coli in Brazilian mastitic milk goats by multiplex-PCR

Abstract:ABSTRACT: This study evalueted the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae and Escherichia coli in milk samples from 257 goats (513 half-udders) and ten bulk tanks, from ten dairy goat farms of São Paulo State, Brazil, by multiplex-PCR. The samples were screened by microbiological culture (gold-standard), and tested by different multiplex-PCR protocols for the detection of each bacterium. A total of 178 half-udders resulted positive by microbiological culture, with coagulase-negative staphylococci (70%), S. aureus (13.5%), S. intermedius (7.9%), and Enterobacteriaceae (4%) the prevalent pathogens. In other way, multiplex-PCR detected 173 pathogens in 151/523 (28.9%; CI95% 25.2-32.9%) milk samples 144/513 (28.1%) half-udders and 7/10 (70%) bulk tanks, with E. coli (86/162, 51.9%) and S. aureus (50/162, 30.9%) the prevalent ones in half-udders, and S. aureus (6/10, 60%) and E. coli (4/5, 36.4%) in bulk tanks. Multiplex-PCR showed a high performance for the detection of three bacteria at a time in mastitic goat milk direct from half-udders or bulk tanks. Thus, this multiplex-PCR protocol proved to be an adequate tool for the identification of the most common mastitis pathogens, independent of their phenotypic characteristics in the diagnosis of clinical mastitis in goats, allowing a continuous and better vigilance and monitoring the herd, being included in quality programs.

Abstract:Mastitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus is a worldwide problem in dairy farms, in part because of the pathogenicity of the bacteria, biofilm formation, and mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance that make the disease difficult to diagnose and treat, which is typically done with the use of beta-lactam antibiotics. The aim of the present study was to determine the virulence and resistance factors of S. aureus isolates from subclinical mastitis, blaZ + / mecA − / mecC − , resistant and sensitive to oxacillin. All isolates were classified as CC97 by MLST analysis, a clonal complex well adapted to the mammary gland and although STAU23 and STAU73 were resistant to oxacillin while STAU32 and STAU78 were sensitive, the genomic analysis identified only the bla Z operon corresponding to resistance to beta-lactams. However, the presence of the sdrC gene was revealed exclusively in resistant isolates, an important adhesin in the colonization process that potentiates pathogenicity in S. aureus . In addition, resistance islands (REIs) were identified in these isolates, suggesting more conserved REIs. In the analysis of SNPs throughout the genome, mutations were found in the trmB and smpB genes of the resistant isolates and in the murD and rimM genes of the sensitive isolates. This study highlights the potential benefit of genome-wide characterization tools to identify molecular mechanisms of S. aureus in bovine mastitis.

Abstract:Introduction Bovine subclinical mastitis (SCM) caused by Gram-positive bacteria is a major cause of economic loss in the dairy industry, exacerbated in situations where antimicrobial resistance is present. Pure platelet-rich plasma (P-PRP) may be a therapeutic alternative for SCM, when used alone or with antibiotics, such as sodium cloxacillin (SC). This study aimed 1) to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of allogeneic P-PRP, SC, and their combination (P-PRP+SC) in cows with SCM caused by Staphylococcus aureus and by streptococci ( Staphylococcus aureus and S. dysgalactiae ); 2) to determine the concentrations of somatic cells (SCC), interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and TGF-β 1 in milk samples of the cows. Methods 130 cows from 4 dairy herds completed the study, of which 40 cows were treated with P-PRP (10 mL), 28 cows with SC (5g), 36 with P-PRP+SC (10mL/5g), and 26 did not receive no treatment (negative control group, NCG). Results The overall bacteriological cure was observed in 10/40 (25%) cows in the P-PRP group, 9/28 (32.14%) animals in the SC group, 26/36 (72.22%) cows in the P-PRP+SC group, and 10/26 (38.46%) animals in the NCG. SCM caused by S. aureus (82/130, 63.08%), was cured in 6/24 (25%) cows treated with P-PRP, 7/24 (29.2%) cows treated with SC, 8/16 (50%) animals treated with P-PRP+SC, and in 8/18 (44.4%) cows in NCG. For SCM caused by the streptococci (48/130, 36.91%), the cure was achieved in 4/12 (33.3%) cows treated with P-PRP, 2/4 (50%) cows treated with SC, 18/20 (90%) cows treated with P-PRP+SC, and in 2/8 (25%) cows of the NCG. SCC was significantly ( p < 0.001) affected by the treatment, herd, cure, bacteria group, and number of calvings factors. IL-1β milk concentrations were significantly ( p < 0.001) influenced by treatment and farm factors, and the interaction between these factors. TNF-α milk concentrations were significantly ( p < 0.001) influenced by time factor. TGF-β 1 milk concentrations were significantly affected by the time and cure factors. Conclusion The combination of P-PRP and SC showed the best therapeutic response (90%) against bovine SCM caused by streptococci. However, none of the treatments showed an effective therapeutic response against S. aureus .

Abstract:This study investigated pathogen bacteria causing dairy subclinical mastitis in the main regions of dairy production in Zhejiang Province. On 30 dairy farms, 3 178 quarter milk samples were collected from 846 lactating dairy cows for subclinical mastitis test using HMT. The samples with HMT reaction ++ or +++ were bacteriologically examined. Staphylococcus aureus isolated from the samples were used for antimicrobial drug sensitivity test. The results indicated 28.0% of 3178 quarters from 54.3% of 846 cows were detected to have subclinical mastitis. The bacteria isolated from the samples were Coagulase-negative staphylococci(34.0%), Streptococcus agalactiae(27.0%), S. aureus (12.2%), Streptococcus dysgalactiae(13.0%)and Streptococcus uberis(6.2%). Only 20.3% of S. aureus isolates were sensitive to penicillin and ampicillin and 34.8% and 47.8% of the isolates sensitive to tetracycline and erythromycin respectively. The bacteria resistant to multiple antibiotics such as penicillin, ampicillin, tetracycline and erythromycin were commonly found.

Abstract:Bovine subclinical mastitis is an inflammation of the mammary gland caused by bacterial intramammary infection, accounting for large economic losses. Treatment of subclinical mastitis is not suggested for lactating cows due to the risk of milk contamination. The objectives of this study were to evaluate an antimicrobial peptide, nisin, in the treatment of subclinical mastitis in lactating cows. A total of 90 lactating Holstein cows with subclinical mastitis were randomly divided into nisin-treated (n = 46) and control (n = 44) groups. In the nisin-treated group, cows received an intramammary infusion of nisin at a dose of 2,500,000 IU once daily for 3 days while the control cows received no treatment. Milk samples were collected from the affected mammary quarters before treatment and 1 and 2 weeks after treatment for analyses of bacteria, somatic cells, and N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAGase). Results indicated that nisin therapy had bacteriological cure rates of 90.1% for Streptococcus agalactiae (10 of 11), 50% for Staphylococcus aureus (7 of 14), 58.8% for coagulase-negative staphylococci (7 of 17), and 65.2% for all cases (30 of 46). Meanwhile, only 15.9% (7 of 44) of untreated cows spontaneously recovered. NAGase activity in milk samples and the number of mammary quarters with a milk somatic cell count of > or =500,000/ml were significantly decreased after nisin treatment while no significant changes took place in the control group. Because of its therapeutic effects on bovine subclinical mastitis, as well as its safety in humans, nisin deserves further study to clarify its effects on mastitis caused by different pathogens.
Antimicrobial Resistance of Major Bacterial Pathogens from Dairy Cows with High Somatic Cell Count and Clinical Mastitis

Abstract:Mastitis is the most prevalent and economically important disease caused by different etiological agents, which leads to increased somatic cell count (SCC) and low milk quality. Treating mastitis cases with antimicrobials is essential to reduce SCC and improve milk quality. Non-prudent use of antimicrobials in dairy farms increased the development of antimicrobial resistant bacteria. This study’s objectives were (1) to isolate and identify etiological agents of mastitis and (2) to determine antimicrobial resistance profiles of bacterial isolates. A total of 174 quarter milk samples from 151 cows with high SCC and clinical mastitis from 34 dairy farms in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Mississippi were collected. Bacterial causative agents were determined by bacteriological and biochemical tests. The antimicrobial resistance of bacterial isolates against 10 commonly used antimicrobials was tested. A total of 193 bacteria consisting of six bacterial species, which include Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus uberis, Streptococcus dysgalactiae, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella oxytoca and Klebsiella pneumoniae were isolated. Staphylococcus aureus was the predominant isolate followed by Strep. spp., E. coli, and Klebsiella spp. Results of this study showed that Gram-negatives (E. coli and Klebsiella spp.) were more resistant than Gram-positives (Staph. aureus and Streptococcus spp.). Continuous antimicrobial resistance testing and identification of reservoirs of resistance traits in dairy farms are essential to implement proper mitigation measures.

Abstract:Mastitis is one of the most frequent and costly production diseases of dairy cattle. It is frequently treated with broad-spectrum antimicrobials. The objectives of this work were to investigate the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, find out the antimicrobials used in mastitis treatment, and explore the antimicrobial resistance profile including detection of resistance genes. Bacterial species and antimicrobial resistance genes were confirmed by the polymerase-chain reaction. A total of 450 cows were screened, where 23 (5.11%) and 173 (38.44%) were affected with clinical and sub-clinical mastitis, respectively. The prevalence of S. aureus was 39.13% (n = 9) and 47.97%(n = 83) while, E. coli was 30.43% (n = 7) and 15.60% (n = 27) in clinical and sub-clinical mastitis affected cows, respectively. The highest antimicrobials used for mastitis treatment were ciprofloxacin (83.34%), amoxycillin (80%) and ceftriaxone (76.67%). More than, 70% of S. aureus showed resistance against ampicillin, oxacillin, and tetracycline and more than 60% of E. coli exhibited resistance against oxacillin and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim. Selected antimicrobial resistance genes (mecA, tetK, tetL, tetM, tetA, tetB, tetC, sul1, sul2 and sul3) were identified from S. aureus and E. coli. Surprisingly, 7 (7.61%) S. aureus carried the mecA gene and were confirmed as methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). The most prevalent resistance genes were tetK 18 (19.57%) and tetL 13 (14.13%) for S. aureus, whereas sul1 16 (47.06%), tetA 12 (35.29%), sul2 11 (32.35%) and tetB 7 (20.59%) were the most common resistance genes in E. coli. Indiscriminate use of antimicrobials and the presence of multidrug-resistant bacteria suggest a potential threat to public health.

Abstract:Abstract Streptococcal mastitis causes enormous economic damage in dairy farming. Milk loses its nutritional value due to the appearance of pathogenic bacteria in it that causes food toxicosis. In this study we used 28 isolates of streptococci isolated from cows with mastitis and endometritis. Of these, 38.9% belonged to S. agalactae, 33.3% to S. dysgalactae, and S. equi subsp. zooepidemicus - 22.2%. A small number of isolates -5.6% belonged to the species S. equi subsp. equi and S. uberis. in The test with mouse peritoneal macrophages shows that the antiphagocytic activity was 75% for isolates of S. zooepidemicus, 57% for S. agalactiae, and 64% for S. dysgalactiae. At the same time, the phagocytic number and phagocytic index were higher in the phagocytosis of the most strains featured with trypsin compared to the initial ones indicating to the antiphagocytic role of the pathogenic structures presented in them at the stage of bacteria capture. The numbers of factors of streptococci pathogenicity including M-proteins make them able to resist opsonization and phagocytosis

Abstract:Abstract Streptococcus agalactiae is one of the causative agents of subclinical mastitis, a common disease of dairy cows that causes great economic losses in the industry worldwide. It is thought that pathology is mainly due to inflammatory damage of bovine mammary epithelial cells (bMECs); however, the mechanism by which S. agalactiae damages the bMECs is not clear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the inflammatory effects of S. agalactiae on bMECs and the resulting changes in protein profiles. The bMECs were incubated with S. agalactiae for different times and assayed for cell viability by MTT assay, apoptosis by annexin V and propidium iodide dual staining, and morphological and ultrastructural changes by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Quantitative real-time PCR was used to determine the effect of S. agalactiae on expression of mRNA of inflammatory factors in bMECs and protein levels were quantitated by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. Exposure to S. agalactiae significantly decreased the cell viability and triggered apoptosis, as well as up-regulating TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 mRNA, and inhibiting IL-8 expression. S. agalactiae also induced morphological and ultrastructural changes. Furthermore, we identified 325 up-regulated and 704 down-regulated proteins in the treated vs control group. All significant differentially expressed proteins (DSEPs) were classified into three major areas by function: biological processes, cellular components and molecular functions. These differentially expressed proteins included enzymes and proteins associated with various metabolic processes and cellular immunity. Pathway enrichment analysis showed that eight down-regulated signaling pathways were significantly enriched. Exposure to even subclinical levels of S. agalactiae can lead to inflammation and bMEC damage. Our data suggest some possible molecular mechanisms for the harmful effects of subclinical mastitis in dairy cows.

Abstract:Cow mastitis is a polyetiological disease involving pathogenic microorganisms. Antibiotics are used to treat sick animals, which contributes to the development of resistant clones of bacteria, and consumption of the corresponding milk leads to the spread of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms. The purpose of the work is to determine strains of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the milk of cows suffering from subclinical mastitis. Bacteriological studies of mammary gland secretion samples were performed by inoculating the sediment obtained after centrifugation of the examined material on an agarised nutrient medium (with 5% ram erythrocytes). The study of antimicrobial sensitivity was performed by the disk diffusion method. It was established that pathogens with multiple resistance to antibiotics circulate among cows suffering from mastitis on the farm, which indicates their indiscriminate use in animal therapy schemes, in particular mastitis. It was found that the overall level of phenotypic resistance to antimicrobial agents of the examined isolates was within 19-33% (in Staphylococcus spp. – 19.9%, in E. coli – 33.2%, in Enterococcus spp. – 32.5%). The analysis of the results allowed assigning the culture study to the category of multiresistant: 31.6% of cultures of Staphylococcus spp. demonstrated resistance to five groups of antibiotics; 54.5% of Escherichia cultures – up to five groups of antibiotics; 37.5% of cultures of Enterococcus spp. resistant to three groups of antibiotics. It was established that 100% of the studied cultures of Staphylococcus spp. are sensitive to netilmicin, sparfloxacin, gatifloxacin and clarithromycin. Therewith, 100% of the examined cultures of Enterococcus spp. sensitive to gentamicin, norfloxacin, and nitrofurantoin, and 100% of the examined E. coli cultures were sensitive to cephalothin, meropenem, gentamicin, tobramycin, amikacin, nitroxoline, and gatifloxacin. Thus, dairy cows suffering from subclinical mastitis are a source of bacteria with multiple resistance to antibiotics and carry risks for consumers due to the consumption of dairy products contaminated with pathogens of zoonotic diseases, which requires proper control by veterinary service specialists
Detection of Antibiotic Resistance, Virulence Gene, and Drug Resistance Gene of Staphylococcus aureus Isolates from Bovine Mastitis

Abstract:Antimicrobial therapy plays an important role in mastitis control caused by Staphylococcus aureus but has become less effective due to widespread drug resistance. The purpose of this study was to detect antibiotic resistance, drug resistance gene, and virulence gene of S. aureus strains. In this study, 2,962 milk samples were collected from 43 dairy farms located in 16 provinces of China and cultured for isolation of S. aureus. Antibiotic resistance, capsular polysaccharide, spa typing, virulence genes, and drug resistance genes of the strains were analyzed. Of 2,962 samples, 298 strains were isolated and identified as S. aureus. The strains exhibited high percentages of resistance to penicillin G (91.95%). Moreover, all strains showed resistance to more than one antimicrobial agent but were sensitive to nitrofurantoin and sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim. The results indicate that type 8 was the dominant capsular polysaccharide serotype and t459 was the dominant spa type. The most prevalent virulence gene was clfA (98%). The resistance genes of several antibiotics were detected, among which the blaZ gene (92.95%) was the highest. In conclusion, we present the antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes of S. aureus in this study which are of importance for mastitis control. IMPORTANCE Bovine mastitis is a serious disease associated with both high incidence and economic loss, posing a major challenge to the dairy industry worldwide. Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most common pathogens to cause bovine mastitis, and antimicrobial therapy plays an important role in mastitis control caused by S. aureus but has become less effective due to widespread drug resistance. The purpose of this study was to detect antibiotic resistance, drug resistance gene, and virulence gene of S. aureus strains, which would be helpful to mastitis control.
Influence of the genotype of Staphylococcus aureus, determined by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, on dry-period elimination of subclinical mastitis in Canadian dairy herds

Abstract:By combining information from 2 databases, we investigated the possibility of an association between the genotype of Staphylococcus aureus causing bovine intramammary infection and dry-period cure of subclinical infection. The 1st database contained bacteriologic and cow data from a field study evaluating the efficacy in such infections of a new intramammary dry-cow therapy (DCT) containing tilmicosin phosphate, in comparison with a commercially available DCT containing benzathine cloxacillin. Isolates of S. aureus from that study were frozen and later independently analyzed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and macrorestriction DNA fingerprinting. The molecular information, summarized and published elsewhere, constituted the 2nd database. Data from 121 subclinically infected quarters of 92 cows from 40 herds were studied by univariate and multivariable regression analysis. Infection by an isolate of PFGE lineage group D was more likely than infection by an isolate of group A or F to be cured (P < 0.05). Cows infected by lineage group D had a higher linear somatic cell count score (LS) from the last Dairy Herd Improvement test before the dry period than did cows infected by the other lineage groups (P = 0.04). Although the probability of cure was significantly lower for cows with an LS at or above the mean of 5.7 for the study population (P = 0.05), when such a cow was infected with lineage group D, cure was significantly more likely (P < 0.001) than when it was infected by another lineage group. Significantly more (P = 0.02) of the infections treated with tilmicosin (74%) than of those treated with benzathine cloxacillin (53%) were cured, and significantly more (P = 0.05) of the infections by group D (81%) than of those by group A (57%) or group F (54%) were cured. However, there was no difference in cure rate for any PFGE genotype when tilmicosin phosphate was administered; when benzathine cloxacillin was administered, 87% of lineage group D isolates were eliminated, as compared with 46% of group A and 33% of group F isolates (P < 0.05). This research demonstrates that certain genotypes of S. aureus may naturally elicit a greater inflammatory response, yet be more susceptible to elimination by antibiotics in the dry period, than other genotypes.

Abstract:AIM: This study was conducted to determine the role of Staphylococcus in the formation of subclinical mastitis in cows and to isolate the phage against isolated Staphylococcus aureus strains.MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, 400 milk cows were screened by California Mastitis Test (CMT) for subclinical mastitis and 235 udders of 96 cows, which were determined to be positive, were evaluated for Staphylococcus. Milk samples were evaluated using conventional and molecular methods. In addition, phage isolation studies were performed against S. aureus strains causing mastitis.RESULTS: At the result of cultural examination, of 235 milk samples that were found as positive for mastitis by CMT, a total of 117 (49.7%) Staphylococcus spp. were isolated as a distribution of 74 (63.24%) coagulase-positive staphylococci and 43 (36.75%) coagulase-negative staphylococci. Of these isolates, 76 (64.95%) were characterized as S. aureus both conventional and molecular techniques. Lytic bacteriophages against two S. aureus strains which were isolated from mastitic milk samples were obtained from wastewater samples.CONCLUSION: The results of this study show that a significant portion of subclinical mastitis was formed by staphylococci. In addition, phage isolation against S. aureus strains isolated can be considered as one of the steps to be applied in the prophylaxis and treatment of such infections.
Identification of Enterococcus spp. by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry isolated from clinical mastitis and bulk tank milk samples

Abstract:Background: Throughout a three-year study period, 1,577 bovine clinical mastitis samples and 302 bulk tank samples were analyzed from ten Brazilian dairy herds. Enterococcus spp. was isolated and identified in 93 (5.9%) clinical mastitis samples. In addition, 258 Enterococcus spp. were isolated from the bulk tank samples of the same herds. The identification of Enterococcus spp. isolated from bulk tanks and milk samples of clinical mastitis were accomplished by phenotypic characteristics and confirmed by MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry (MS). Fisher test was performed to verify the difference between bulk tanks and mastitis samples. Results: The following species were identified from clinical mastitis: E. saccharolyticus (62.4%), E. faecalis (19.4%), E. faecium (15.1%), E. hirae (1.1%), E. mundtii (1.1%), E. durans (1.1%). Furthermore, from 258 bulk tank milk samples, eight enterococci species were isolated: E. faecalis (67.8%), E. hirae (15.1%), E. faecium (4.6%), E. saccharolyticus (4.6%), E. mundtii (3.1%), E. caseliflavus ( 2.7%), E. durans (1.2%), E. galinarum (0.8%). Conclusions: The difference in species predominance in bulk tank samples (67.8% of E. faecalis) and clinical mastitis (62.4% of E. saccharolyticus) was unexpected and caught our attention. Although Enterococcus spp. are traditionally classified as an environmental mastitis agent, in the present study, E. saccharolyticus behaved as a contagious agent of mastitis, which consequently changed the control patterns to be implemented.
