Abstract:Oxygen vacancies in transition-metal oxides can facilitate photocatalysis activity critical for environmental remediation and solar energy conversion. Investigation of photocatalytic activity of TiO(2)with different amounts of the oxygen vacancies can provide fundamental insights into the oxygen-vacancy-dependent reaction mechanisms. Here, the oxygen vacancies in TiO(2)nanoparticles were investigated by the combination of transmission electron microscopy with electron energy loss spectra, x-ray near-edge structures, and x-ray absorption techniques. The results demonstrate that the oxygen vacancies mainly exist at the surface of TiO(2)and the crystalline structure of TiO(2)almost keeps no change during annealing under the different oxygen pressures at 500 degrees C. The exact quantity and distribution of the oxygen vacancies in TiO(2)nanoparticles were obtained. The surface oxygen vacancies on TiO(2)significantly enhance photocatalytic activity for Rhodamine B degradation and hydrogen generation. The formation of oxygen vacancies at the TiO(2)surfaces is responsible for engineering the band gap of TiO(2)and tailoring their electronic structures, and promoting light absorption and enhancement photocatalysis. This work could provide new insights into the understanding of the photocatalytic activity enhancement by the surface oxygen vacancies.

Abstract:TiO2-diatomite photocatalysts were prepared by sol-gel process with various pre-modified diatomite. In order to obtain diatomite with different surface characteristics, two modification approaches including calcination and phosphoric acid treatment on the micro-structure of diatomite are introduced. The photocatalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms and micromorphology analysis. The results indicate that, compared with pure TiO2, the anatase-to-rutile phase transition temperature of TiO2 loaded on diatomite carrier is significantly increased to nearly 900 degrees C, depending on the different pretreatment method of diatomite. The photocatalytic activities of different samples were evaluated by their degradation rate of methyl orange ( MO) dye under UV and visible-light irradiation. The samples prepared by phosphoric acid pretreatment method exhibit the highest photocatalytic activity. After 90 min of UV irradiation, about 90% of MO is decomposed by the best effective photocatalyst. And after 8 h visible-light irradiation, nearly 60% of MO is decomposed by the same sample. Further mechanism investigation reveals that the H3PO4 pretreatment process can obviously change the surface features of diatomite carrier, cause the formation of Si-O-Ti bond, increase the binding strength between TiO2 and diatomite, restrain crystal growth of loaded TiO2, and thus form thermal-stable meso-porous structure at the granular spaces. It helps to build micro-, meso- and macro-porous hierarchical porous structure in TiO2-diatomite, and improves the charge and mass transfer efficiency during catalyzing process, resulting in the significantly increased photocatalytic activity of TiO2-diatomite pretreated by phosphoric acid. Abstract:Abstract TiO 2 -based powder materials have been widely studied as efficient photocatalysts for water splitting due to their low cost, photo-responsivity, earthly abundance, chemical and thermal stability, etc. In particular, the recent breakthrough of nitrogen-doped TiO 2 , which enhances the presence of structural defects and dopant impurities at elevated temperatures, exhibits an impressive visible-light absorption for photocatalytic activity. Although their electronic and optical properties have been extensively studied, the structure-activity relationship and photocatalytic mechanism remain ambiguous. Herein, we report an in-depth structural study of rutile, anatase and mixed phases (commercial P25) with and without nitrogen-doping by variable-temperature synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. We report that an unusual anisotropic thermal expansion of the anatase phase can reveal the intimate relationship between sub-surface oxygen vacancies, nitrogen-doping level and photocatalytic activity. For highly doped anatase, a new cubic titanium oxynitride phase is also identified which provides important information on the fundamental shift in absorption wavelength, leading to excellent photocatalysis using visible light.

Abstract:Using TiCl4, O2, and N2O as precursors, N-doped titanium dioxide thin films with large area and continuous surface were obtained by atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition. Measurements of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope and ultravoilet-Visible transmission spectra were performed. Using N2O as N-doped source, anatase-rutile transformation is accelerated through oxygen vacancies formation, and the mean grain size of rutile crystallites decreases with the increase of N2O flow rate. Compared to the pure TiO2, N-doped TiO2 films give a relative narrow optical band-gap, and their visible-light induced photocatalysis is much enhanced. Visible-light-induced hydrophilicity of the TiO2 thin films enhances with the increase of N2O flow rate, which might be due to the dentritic islands structure on the surface of the N-doped TiO2 thin films.
Effect of oxygen vacancy concentration on the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of anatase TiO2: DFT and experimental studies

Abstract:Oxygen vacancies (OVs) are important for changing the geometric and electronic structure as well as the chemical properties of anatase TiO2. In this work, we performed a density functional theory (DFT) calculation on the electronic structure and catalytic performance of anatase TiO2 (101) with different numbers of OVs. A comparison of the measured XRD results with the simulated ones of TiO2 demonstrates that OVs can cause changes in the crystal structure. The changes in the electronic structure (Mulliken charges, band structure, and partial density of states) and water splitting on TiO2 (101) surfaces were investigated as a function of oxygen vacancy concentration. The results show that the introduction of OVs forms impurity levels below the conduction band of Ti 3d orbitals, through which electrons can gradually transit from VB to CB. However, when oxygen vacancy concentration is too high, the maximum electron transition energy increases and the promotion effect of OVs on water splitting is weakened. This work would provide more enlightenment and information for the design of defective TiO2 with higher photocatalytic activity.
Tuning oxygen vacancy content in TiO2 nanoparticles to enhance the photocatalytic performance

Abstract:White TiO2 (W-TiO2), gray TiO2 (G-TiO2) and black TiO2 (B-TiO2) have been prepared through simple annealing process in different atmospheres. The oxygen vacancy content in the TiO2 samples and the relationship between oxygen vacancy and photocatalytic performance have been studied by comprehensive analyses. The XRD peaks slightly move to a low angle and the Raman strongest peak shifts positively owing to oxygen vacancy and Ti3+. The energy bandgap of G-TiO2 and B-TiO2 is tuned from 3.10 to 3.02 and 1.99 eV. The content of oxygen vacancy is 1%, 4.8% and 7.8% for W-TiO2, G-TiO2 and B-TiO2, respectively. The efficiency of NO removal is stable at 34%, 38% and 45%, and the decomposition rate of Rhodamine B under visible light is 75%, 83% and 89% for W-TiO2, G-TiO2 and B-TiO2, respectively. The results are significant for the design of high-performance photocatalytic materials in the field of solar energy conversion.
Oxygen vacancy engineering of TiO2-x nanostructures for photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Abstract:The conversion of CO2 into solar fuels by photocatalysis is a promising way to deal with the energy crisis and the greenhouse effect. The introduction of oxygen vacancy into semiconductor has been proved to be an effective strategy for enhancing CO2 photoreduction performance. Herein, TiO2-x nanostructures have been prepared by a simple solvothermal method and engineered by the reaction time. With the prolonging of reaction time, the oxygen vacancy signal gradually increases while the band gap becomes narrow for the as-synthesized TiO2-x nanostructures. The results show that the TiO2-x-6 h, TiO2-x-24 h, and TiO2-x-48 h samples have the main product of CH4 (more) and CO (less) for CO2 photoreduction. Among the three oxygen vacancy photocatalysts, the TiO2-x-24 h sample shows the highest CH4 generation rate of 41.8 μmol g−1 h−1. On the basis of photo/electrochemical measurements, the TiO2-x-24 h sample exhibits efficient electron–hole separation and charge transfer capabilities, thus allows much more electrons to participate in the reaction and finally promotes the photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction. It further confirms that the optimization of oxygen vacancy concentration could facilitate the photoinduced charge separation and accordingly improve photocatalytic CO2 conversion.

Abstract:Due to the strong bonding between Ti and O atoms, creating oxygen vacancy in stable TiO2 usually involves harsh synthetic conditions. In this work, inspired by DFT calculation results that much lower energy is required to dissociate Ti-OH bond than Ti-O bond, we report a facile approach by simply calcining TiO x (OH) y precursor in inertia atmosphere, to effectively create oxygen vacancy in titania (Ti-N2-600). During CO2 photoreduction, CH4 and CO are the major products on Ti-N2-600, whose evolution rates are about 2.8 times and 3.6 times those on commercial TiO2 (P25), respectively. The in-situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results indicate the oxygen vacancy in Ti-N2-600 favors 1) CO2 activation and photoreduction since CO2·- is generated but not detected on P25; 2) the *COL formation and further transformation. This Ti-OH breakage strategy presents a new insight into oxygen vacancy generation in TiO2 and more generically other metal oxide semiconductors.

Abstract:In this study, Ti3C2Tx‐derived TiO2/Ti3C2Tx photocatalysts are regulated by alkalization in a controlled KOH solution and calcination in different heating atmospheres to reveal the contribution of oxygen vacancies, Ti3+, carbon species, and high work function titanium carbide through experiments, characterization techniques, and DFT calculation. Moreover, its application prospects in tetracycline hydrochloride degradation are also studied. The rational design of Ti3C2Tx MXene‐derived TiO2‐based photocatalysts with broad light absorption and efficient charge separation has recently attracted considerable attention for antibiotic degradation. However, the complementary effects of each component, especially oxygen vacancies (OVs) and high work function O‐terminated Ti3C2 (O‐Ti3C2), in affecting light absorption and photocatalytic activity remain controversial. In this study, Ti3C2Tx‐derived TiO2/Ti3C2Tx photocatalysts are regulated by alkalization in the controlled KOH solution and calcination in different heating atmospheres to reveal the contribution of OVs, Ti3+, carbon species, and high work function titanium carbide. Carbon species and rich OVs co‐exist in TiO2/O‐Ti3C2 (OV/C‐TT‐1K(N2)) which exhibit superior photocatalytic performance in tetracycline hydrochloride degradation with a kinetic constant of 0.0217 min−1. Combined with experimental and DFT computational results, the broadened visible light response and desirable redox properties are caused by OVs and carbon dopants, as well as decreased Schottky barrier height and enhanced electronic conductivity caused by high work function O‐Ti3C2.

Abstract:The photocatalytic activity of TiO2 coatings was improved through introducing the defects including Ti3+ and oxygen vacancy by means of mechanical coating followed by carbon reduction at elevated temperatures. The samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, XPS, EPR and UV-vis absorption spectrum. The XRD results showed that the phase transformation from TiO2 to Ti4O7 occurred when temperature was raised to 1173 K holding for 0.5 h. The XPS and EPR results confirmed that the defects including Ti3+ and oxygen vacancies in the surface and bulk of TiO2 coatings. Furthermore, the concentration of the bulk defects was increased with the increase of reduction temperature or holding time. The UV-vis absorption spectra revealed that the carbon reduction greatly enhanced visible light absorption due to the introduction of Ti3+ and oxygen vacancies. A moderate relative concentration ratio of bulk and surface defects including Ti3+ and oxygen vacancies favored to improve the photocatalytic activity.
Spatial Interfacial Heterojunctions of TiO2 for Photocatalytic Degradation of Toluene: Effects of Interface Amorphous Region and Oxygen Vacancy

Abstract:The catalytic activity of TiO2 is contingent upon its crystal structure and the optoelectronic properties associated with defects. In this study, a one-step method was used to synthesize TiO2 with a spatial interface of rutile/ anatase phases, and a simple thermal annealing process was applied to optimize the amorphous regions and oxygen vacancies at the interface between the rutile and anatase phases of TiO2. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) elucidates the evolution process of the amorphous domain at the interface, skillfully introducing oxygen vacancies at the heterojunction interface by modulating the amorphous domain. The obtained photocatalyst (TiO2-350 degrees C) after annealing exhibits an optimal interface structure, with its photocatalytic activity and stability in degrading toluene far superior to P25. Photocurrent and photoluminescence (PL) measurements affirm that the existence of interfacial oxygen vacancies heightens the efficiency of electron transfer at the interface, while surface oxygen vacancies significantly enhance the stability and mineralization rate of toluene degradation. The improved photocatalytic properties were attributed to the combined effects of surface/interface oxygen vacancies and spatial interface heterojunctions. The one-step synthesis method developed in this work provides a novel perspective on combining spatially interfaced anatase/rutile phases with surface/interfacial oxygen vacancies.
In Situ Tuning of Defects and Phase Transition in Titanium Dioxide by Lithiothermic Reduction

Abstract:Defects engineering of oxides plays a vital role in tuning their physicochemical and electronic properties and thereby determining their potential applications. However, the safe and controllable production of effective defects in the oxides is still challenging. Here, we report a facile one-pot solid lithiothermic reduction approach to generate graded oxygen defects in TiO2 nanoparticles. Various levels of lithium reduction are systematically studied, and meanwhile, a distinct phase transition from anatase TiO2 to cubic LixTiO2 is observed with the increasing lithium ratio. The structure and evolution of surface defects and bulk phase transition are investigated in detail. Afterward, we demonstrate their applications in carbon dioxide photoreduction and photothermal imaging. The slightly reduced TiO2 with effective oxygen defects affords a highly broadened solar spectrum absorption and yields significantly enhanced visible photocatalytic activity in CO2 conversion, which is further revealed by theoretical calculations. The highly reduced TiO2 with obvious phase transition shows enhanced solar absorption and achieves high photo-thermal-conversion efficacy, showing huge potential in photo-thermal-related applications. The lithiothermic reduction is a general and effective approach to produce defects and induce phase transition in oxides, which can be used in multiple applications.
Photon Localization Effect and Surface Oxygen Vacancy Enhanced Photocatalytic Nitrogen Fixation Performance for Nanocrystalline Titanium Dioxide Film

Abstract:Photocatalytic nitrogen fixation has aroused extensive attention as a green and sustainable route for ammonia synthesis under mild conditions. To boost nitrogen fixation efficiency, many approaches have been proposed to overcome the limitations of high energy barrier, easy recombination of photogenerated electrons-holes and poor light absorption. Oxygen vacancies (OVs) introduced on the surface of photo-catalysts is critical for N2 molecular activation. Meanwhile, photonic crystals (PCs) can effectively promote photon capture of catalysts. The focus of this work is to couple titanium dioxide (TiO2) having oxygen vacancies (TOVs) to silica (SiO2) photonic crystals (SPCs) for the purpose of synergistically enhancing the photocatalytic nitrogen fixation performance. Experimental results showed that TOVs film exhibited better photocatalytic activity than anatase TiO2 film because the OVs provided more active sites for the chemisorption and activation of nitrogen. The photon localization effect of SPCs could improve the light-harvesting ability of TOVs, leading to further enhancement of the nitrogen photofixation performance of TiO2. This research provides a novel route for production of ammonia in a clean and low-energy consumption way.

Mixed-Phase TiO2 with Oxygen Vacancies for Enhanced Visible Light Photocatalysis Performance

Abstract:Because of the decrease in the band gap and the carrier recombination rate, the visible light photocatalysis performance of the mixed-phase TiO2 with oxygen vacancies is better than that of the pure-phase TiO2. In this study, two different acids were separately applied in the hydrothermal synthesis of TiO2 nanoparticles without any post-heat treatment. The reaction was carried out at a relatively low temperature not exceeding 140∘C. Both kinds of crystallized TiO2 powders show much more band gap reduction than that of commercial Degussa P25 TiO2 nanoparticles, which can be attributed to the oxygen vacancies. Under the visible light illumination-assisted photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange in water, the two mixed-phase TiO2 powders exhibited a steady photocatalytic activity upon increasing to five cycles. The highest photocatalytic efficiency of the two powders is 2.7 times than that of the P25 powder, which is regarded as an excellent photocatalyst for water purification.
Oxygen vacancies induced band gap narrowing for efficient visible-light response in carbon-doped TiO2

Abstract:The band gap of rutile TiO2 has been narrowed, via the formation of oxygen vacancies (OVs) during heat treatment in carbon powder (cHT) with embedding TiO2 coatings. The narrowed band gap efficiently improves the visible light response of TiO2 coatings, to further enhance the visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity. The change in OVs during cHT has been studied by manipulation of cHT temperature and time. The effect of OVs on the band structure of nonstoichiometric TiO2-x has been further calculated by first-principles calculations. With raising the temperature, SEM images show that the nano-size fiber-like structure forms on the surface of TiO2 coatings, and the amount of the fiber-like structure significantly increases and their size changes from nano to micro under 800 °C, contributing to cause an increase in accessible surface area. The UV-Vis results reveal that the band gap of TiO2 has been narrowed during cHT, due to the formed oxygen vacancies. The XPS results further confirm that the formation of surface defects including OVs, and the XPS depth profile further shows the decreased relative amount of O whereas increased relative amount of carbon. Notably, after cHT for TiO2 coatings, the photocatalytic activity first increases then decreases with raising the temperature, achieving approximately 3 times at 850 °C. The first-principles calculation suggest that the OVs in TiO2 coatings with localized electrons could facilitate the band gap narrowing, further favoring to enhance the photocatalytic activity under visible light.

Abstract:Defective TiO2 nanocrystals (D-TiO2) were synthesized by a simple, mild and green sol–gel hydrothermal method. The as-prepared sample possesses a high specific surface area of 173.6 m2/g and high crystallinity of anatase phase without any calcination. Raman, EPR and XPS spectrum confirmed the existence of oxygen vacancies in D-TiO2. These oxygen vacancies provide D-TiO2 with visible-light photocatalytic activity, as demonstrated by the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). The degradation pathway of RhB over D-TiO2 was investigated, and the possible photocatalytic mechanism was also proposed. The excellent photocatalytic property of D-TiO2 was mainly attributed to the synergistic effect between the high surface area and abundant oxygen vacancies. This work presents a new route to synthesize high-performance visible-light-responsive TiO2 photocatalyst.

Efficient defect engineering and in-situ carbon doping in ultra-fine TiO2 with enhanced visible-light-response photocatalytic performance

Abstract:The wide bandgap and low photocatalytic efficiency are acknowledged as the main problems of the photocatalytic activities of TiO2. Herein, an effective strategy combing defect engineering and heteroatom doping is developed to expand the region covering visible light response and construct the active surface. A plasma-induced carbon doping (PICD) method is adopted to achieve a binary core-shell structure containing outer defect-layer shell of oxygen vacancy and inside crystalline anatase TiO2 core (~ 5 nm). The outstanding photocatalytic activity for visible-light-driven degradation of RhB and MO originates from narrowed bandgap (~ 2.30 eV) and improved photo-induced charge separation. Moreover, the excellent stability towards RhB degradation (100%) after 4 recycles exhibits the great potential applicability. RhB removal efficiency could reach to 100% even in the wide pH range from 3 to 11. Furthermore, the synergy effect by outside oxygen-vacancies layer and interstitial carbon doping enhanced the photoelectrochemical (PEC) performances significantly. This PICD technology can induce carbon doping and defect layer with active cites, which opens up a new way to design novel visible-light-responsive photocatalysis.

Abstract:The catalytic activity of TiO 2 is contingent upon its crystal structure and the optoelectronic properties associated with defects. In this study, a one-step method was used to synthesize TiO 2 with a spatial interface of rutile/anatase phases, and a simple thermal annealing process was applied to optimize the amorphous regions and oxygen vacancies at the interface between the rutile and anatase phases of TiO 2 . High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) elucidates the evolution process of the amorphous domain at the interface, skillfully introducing oxygen vacancies at the heterojunction interface by modulating the amorphous domain. The obtained photocatalyst (TiO 2 –350 °C) after annealing exhibits an optimal interface structure, with its photocatalytic activity and stability in degrading toluene far superior to P25. Photocurrent and photoluminescence (PL) measurements affirm that the existence of interfacial oxygen vacancies heightens the efficiency of electron transfer at the interface, while surface oxygen vacancies significantly enhance the stability and mineralization rate of toluene degradation. The improved photocatalytic properties were attributed to the combined effects of surface/interface oxygen vacancies and spatial interface heterojunctions. The one-step synthesis method developed in this work provides a novel perspective on combining spatially interfaced anatase/rutile phases with surface/interfacial oxygen vacancies.
