Abstract:As the airport traffic increases there is a continuous increase of passengers with different motor disabilities. Disabled passenger's assistance causes a biomechanical overload in airport workers. Some disabled passengers are classified by IATA as WCHC (wheel chair in cabin or Charlie). Our study, was performed in one of the most important Italian airport on Charlie passengers (about 10% of all assistances). We identified four critical points: 1) wheelchair and baggage moving (unstable load), 2) inclined ramps with worker's backwards steps and braked wheelchair to prevent passenger tipping or falling, 3) transfer from standard wheelchair to bicycle wheelchair, specifically designed for the aisle; 4.) transfer from bicycle wheelchair to aircraft seat. The last two points required sometimes to lift passengers over the armrest and positioning them on a window side seat, causing a serious increase of biomechanical load. For each critical point we have proposed technical and organizational measures to reduce airport worker's biomechanical risk.

Abstract:One hundred and six extracted upper first premolars with one root were examined for the incidence of the lateral grooves on each root surface, and their length and their form on the mesial surface.The results were as follows:1. The incidence of lateral grooves on both mesial and distal surfaces was 73.6%, on mesial was 17.9%, and on neither surface was 6.6%.2. As regard to the length of the groove, half of the grooves that originate from between the neck of the root and one-third of the root run across the one-half of the root.3. The form of the groove was divided into three categories by bucco-lingual ground sections of plastic tooth casts-flat type in 46.5%, shallow concaved in 39.4% and narrow V-shaped in 14.1%.
Taste alteration and its relationship with nutritional status among cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, cross-sectional study

Abstract:The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of taste alterations (TAs) during chemotherapy and their association with nutritional status and malnutrition. In addition to the associated factors with TA, including sociodemographic health-related factors and clinical status, and to investigate coping strategies to manage TA. A multicenter cross-sectional design study was conducted on 120 cancer patients aged at least 18 who had been undergoing at least one round of chemotherapy. TAs were evaluated using the chemotherapy-induced taste alteration scale (CiTAS), the malnutrition universal screening tool (MUST) was used for nutritional screening, the antineoplastic side effects scale (ASES) was used for subjective assessment of chemotherapy side effects, and the Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) was used for comorbidity assessment. SPSS21 software was used to analyze the data, and the independent T-test and one-way ANOVA test were used to determine the association between TAs and a variety of related variables. The prevalence of TAs was 98.3%. Among participants, 48.3% were at low risk of malnutrition, 20% at medium risk, and 31.7% at high risk. Malnutrition risk was associated with taste disorders (p<0.05). Patients' age, gender, educational level, and physical status were associated with TAs (p<0.05). Type of cancer, chemotherapy regimen, and number of chemotherapy cycles were also associated with TAs (p<0.05). A variety of antineoplastic side effects were associated with TAs (p<0.05), including nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, sore mouth and throat, excessive thirst, swallowing difficulty, appetite changes, weight loss, dizziness, lack of energy, disturbed sleep, anxiety, and difficulty concentrating. TAs were associated with an increased number of comorbidities, and individuals with diabetes, pulmonary diseases, and hypertension were associated with TAs (P<0.05). Patients in this study rarely practice self-management strategies to cope with TAs. A high prevalence (98.3%) of TAs in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy was found, and it was linked to a variety of negative outcomes. Chemotherapy-induced TAs are an underestimated side effect that requires more attention from patients and health care providers.

Abstract:The sense of taste is responsible for the detection and ingestion of food to cover energetic requirements in health and disease. The change in taste perception might lead to malnutrition that is usually one of the frequent causes of morbidity and mortality in patients with cancer. In this review, we summarize the mechanisms of taste perception and how they are altered in cancer. We also address the question of the implication of inflammation, responsible for the alterations in taste modalities. We highlight the role of radio- and chemotherapy in the modulation of taste physiology. Other several factors like damage to taste progenitor cells and disruption of gut microbiota are also dealt with relation to taste perception in cancer. We further shed light on how to restore taste acuity, by using different preventive methods, dietary modifications and pharmacotherapy in subjects with advanced cancer state.

Assessment of taste alteration and its correlation with nutritional status and quality of life among cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy

Abstract:Background: Chemotherapy is the most commonly utilized therapeutic strategy among the numerous cancer treatments. These chemotherapeutic agents have a variety of adverse reactions, one of which is taste alteration (TA), which substantially influences the patient's nutritional status and quality of life (QoL). Objective: The study aims to assess TAs, associated factors, and the nutritional status and QoL of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was carried out for 6 months, among cancer patients diagnosed with TA. Data was collected using a chemotherapy-induced taste alteration scale (CiTAS). Demographic details of the patients, factors associated with TA, details regarding chemotherapeutic agent used, number of current chemotherapy cycles etc, were recorded using a self-designed data collection form. Nutritional status and QoL on cancer patients were collected using Mini nutritional assessment - short form (MNA-SF) and EuroQol 5 dimension 5 levels (EQ5D5L), respectively, and statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) software version 29 was used for the analysis of data. Results: A significant association was observed between TA and QoL. There was also a significant association between TA and predisposing factors such as nausea and dry mouth, which was obtained from the Chi-square test. Male patients were found to have higher TA than female patients. TA has also affected various aspects of QoL, such as mobility, pain, and discomfort. Patients experiencing mouth dryness or xerostomia had higher TA than others. A negative association was seen between TAs and nutritional status. Conclusion: This study shows a significant relationship between gender and TA, dry mouth, nausea, and TA. Several QoL factors like mobility, pain/discomfort, and TA were also observed. Despite this study not observing any statistical association between nutritional status and TA, clinically, most of the patients with higher TA were malnourished. This study concluded that there was a relationship between TA and QoL and that nausea and dry mouth are the predisposing factors for TA.

Abstract:Our sense of taste arises from the sensory information generated after compounds in the oral cavity and oropharynx activate taste receptor cells situated on taste buds. This produces the perception of sweet, bitter, salty, sour, or umami stimuli, depending on the chemical nature of the tastant. Taste impairments (dysgeusia) are alterations of this normal gustatory functioning that may result in complete taste losses (ageusia), partial reductions (hypogeusia), or over-acuteness of the sense of taste (hypergeusia). Taste impairments are not life-threatening conditions, but they can cause sufficient discomfort and lead to appetite loss and changes in eating habits, with possible effects on health. Determinants of such alterations are multiple and consist of both genetic and environmental factors, including aging, exposure to chemicals, drugs, trauma, high alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking, poor oral health, malnutrition, and viral upper respiratory infections including influenza. Disturbances or loss of smell, taste, and chemesthesis have also emerged as predominant neurological symptoms of infection by the recent Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus strain 2 (SARS-CoV-2), as well as by previous both endemic and pandemic coronaviruses such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) and SARS-CoV. This review is focused on the main causes of alteration, reduction, and loss of taste and their potential repercussion on dietary habits and health, with a special focus on the recently developed hypotheses regarding the mechanisms through which SARS-CoV-2 might alter taste perception.

Taste and smell are associated with dietary intake, eating behavior, nutritional status, and health-related quality of life in children with cancer

Abstract:Background & aims: Smell and taste changes are frequently reported bothersome treatment symptoms during treatment for childhood cancer and assumed to influence outcomes such as food intake. Since nutritional status of children with cancer is already vulnerable, any detrimental effects on food intake should be prevented. Therefore, understanding the exact relationship between chemosensory changes and dietary intake, eating behavior, and other domains such as health-related quality of life (HRQoL), is important for improving outcomes. Methods: In this longitudinal study, we followed 87 childhood cancer patients treated for hematological, solid, or brain malignancies. Smell (odor threshold and odor identification) and taste function (total taste score) were objectively investigated using commercial Sniffin' Sticks and Taste Strips respectively, and by self-report. Dietary intake was measured using a 3-day food dairy. For nutritional status, BMI expressed as standard deviation scores was derived from medical records. Eating behavior and HRQoL were assessed by the Behavioral Pediatrics Feeding Assessment Scale (BPFAS) and PedsQL 4.0 Generic Core Scales, respectively. Measurements were taken approximately 6 weeks (T0), 3 months (T1), 6 months after starting chemotherapy (T2), and 3 months after termination of chemotherapy or maintenance phase for children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) (T3). Dietary intake, eating behavior, nutritional status, and HRQoL were modelled over time using mixed model analysis. Associations between smell and taste (objective and self-report), as well as patient characteries were studied. Results: Energy intake significantly increased during the study period, with a higher age, BMI, and total taste scores associated to this increase. Boys had higher energy intake compared to girls. Eating behavior scores significantly declined, indicating less eating problems. Age, pre-diagnosis eating behavior, self-reported smell changes, and tube feeding were associated to eating behavior. BMI significantly increased, with a higher BMI at diagnosis to be related to a higher BMI during the study period. A lower BMI was found in children receiving tube feeding and self-reported taste changes. HRQoL improved during the study period, with lower HRQoL in children receiving tube feeding and self-reported taste changes. Conclusion: Both objective and subjective measures of taste and smell influence dietary intake, eating behavior, nutritional status, and HRQoL. Individual dietary advice and coping strategies are warranted to prevent detrimental effects of chemosensory changes on food intake and clinical outcomes in children with cancer.
Long-term effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients with and without chemosensory disorders at disease onset: a psychophysical and magnetic resonance imaging exploratory study

Abstract:A preserved sense of smell and taste allows us to understand many environmental "messages" and results in meaningfully improvements to quality of life. With the COVID-19 pandemic, it became clear how important these senses are for social and nutritional status and catapulted this niche chemosensory research area towards widespread interest. In the current exploratory work, we assessed two groups of post-COVID-19 patients who reported having had (Group 1) or not (Group 2) a smell/taste impairment at the disease onset. The aim was to compare them using validated smell and taste tests as well as with brain magnetic resonance imaging volumetric analysis. Normative data were used for smell scores comparison and a pool of healthy subjects, recruited before the pandemic, served as controls for taste scores. The majority of patients in both groups showed an olfactory impairment, which was more severe in Group 1 (median UPSIT scores: 24.5 Group 1 vs 31.0 Group 2, p = 0.008), particularly among women ( p = 0.014). No significant differences emerged comparing taste scores between Group 1 and Group 2, but dysgeusia was only present in Group 1 patients. However, for taste scores, a significant difference was found between Group 1 and controls ( p = 0.005). No MRI anatomical abnormalities emerged in any patients while brain volumetric analysis suggested a significant difference among groups for the right caudate nucleus ( p = 0.028), although this was not retained following Benjamini–Hochberg correction. This exploratory study could add new information in COVID-19 chemosensory long-lasting impairment and address future investigations on the post-COVID-19 patients' research.

Abstract:Objectives Prevalence of malnutrition in cancer ranges between 25–70% with increased risk in sites related to food ingestion, namely head and neck cancer (HNC). This is attributable to oral manifestations observed during treatments such as sensory alterations (SA). SA have been well documented and are associated with altered food perception and reduced food intake. In addition to taste and smell, food perception is also influenced by somatosensation comprising of tactile/texture, thermal, and trigeminal perception. The current review aims to investigate SA, specifically oral somatosensory alteration, among HNC patients and its potential consequences on food intake. Methods A literature search was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Related works were also identified by snowballing. Keywords searched were, but not limited to: head and neck cancer; malnutrition; taste; smell; oral somatosensation; texture; oral tactile; trigeminal; thermal; chemotherapy; radiotherapy. Results Malnutrition in HNC patients ranged between 9–100% depending on tumor site, treatment, and time point (before, during, or after treatment). Between 56–100% of HNC patients experienced taste and/or smell alterations. Patients with these alterations showed altered food behavior including food aversion, modified food preference, reduced appetite, and lower food enjoyment. SA were also linked to lower food intake and higher weight loss. Regarding somatosensation, psychophysical studies (n = 7) showed reduced oral tactile function among HNC patients but its correlation with texture perception remains elusive. These studies (n = 2) also indicated reduced thermal sensitivity, whereas psychophysical studies investigating trigeminal perception have not been identified. Qualitative studies reported alterations such as altered sensitivity to spices, certain food textures, and temperature. Conclusions SA are directly linked to food perception which contributes to changes in food behavior. However, evidence is still limited on oral somatosensory alteration and overall, results are inconclusive on the relationship between altered food behavior and intake. Such insights should support optimization of personalized meal for patients. Abstract:One of the main side effects of radiation therapy to the head and neck region is altered taste sensation. This causes significant morbidity and has profound effects on the quality of life (QoL) of patients. While radiation-associated toxicities like xerostomia and dysphagia are part of large investigations, data on taste impairment is sparse. Small cohort sizes in the majority of studies and a variety of analysis methods limit our current understanding of the underlying processes. None of the studies published to date used a taste-specific QoL questionnaire with differentiation of the different taste qualities (e.g. sour, bitter). Furthermore, data regarding the correlation of taste impairment with radiation-associated change in saliva composition is currently not available. The aim of the TASTE study is to fill this gap. Based on the acquired data, a normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) model for late radiation-associated taste impairment will be developed.

Taste acuity and food attitudes of selected patients with cancer

Abstract:Patients with cancer may display taste abnormalities. In this study, abnormalities observed before treatment involved decreased salt and sweet sensitivity. For some thresholds, greater abnormalities were observed among men and women, among patients with colon cancer than among those with breast cancer, and among those with a greater extent of disease. Observations of slight increases in thresholds for sour detection and bitter recognition during the early treatment period and normalization of high sweet recognition thresholds after two weeks of treatment suggest that additional changes in taste acuity may accompany short-term treatment with 5'fluorouracil. However, absence of a correlation of taste changes with changes in food preferences points to the role of other factors in determining patients' food preferences during such treatment. Consideration of the incidence of taste abnormalities in these groups of patients with cancer and observation of altered food attitudes among patients receiving 5-fluorouracil does provide a basis for general recommendations for serving foods which will appeal to these patients.

Abstract:Purpose of review: Olfactory dysfunction in upper airway viral infections (common cold, acute rhinosinusitis) is common (> 60%). During the COVID-19 outbreak, frequency of sensory disorders (smell and/or taste) in affected patients has shown a high variability from 5 to 98%, depending on the methodology, country, and study. Recent findings: A sudden, severe, isolated loss of smell and/or taste, in the absence of other upper airway inflammatory diseases (allergic rhinitis, chronic rhinosinusitis, nasal polyposis), should alert individuals and physicians on being potentially affected by COVID-19. The evaluation of smell/taste disorders with a visual analogue scale or an individual olfactory or gustatory test, at the hospital or by telemedicine, to prevent contamination might facilitate an early detection of infected patients and reduce the transmission of SARS-CoV-2. During the COVID-19 outbreak, patients with sudden loss of smell should initiate social distancing and home isolation measures and be tested for SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic test when available. Olfactory training is recommended when smell does not come back after 1 month but can be started earlier.
Eating Habits and Body Weight Changes Induced by Variation in Smell and Taste in Patients with Previous SARS-CoV-2 Infection

Abstract:Olfactory and gustatory dysfunction are recognized as common symptoms in patients with COVID-19, with a prevalence ranging, respectively, between 41–61% and 38.2–49%. This review focused on relating the variations in dietary habits with the reduction/loss of smell and/or taste in patients who contracted the COVID-19 infection. Primarily, we reviewed the main pathological mechanisms involved in COVID 19-induced anosmia/dysosmia and ageusia/dysgeusia. Then, we explored and summarized the behavioural changes in food intake and body weight during the COVID-19 pandemic in relation to sensory impairment and the underlying mechanisms. Most studies on this topic argue that the altered chemosensory perception (taste and smell) mainly induces reduced appetite, leading to a faster fullness sensation during the consumption of a meal and, therefore, to a decrease in body weight. On the other hand, a reduced perception of the food's sensory properties may trigger compensatory responses that lead some individuals to increase food intake with a different effect on body weight. Regarding body weight, most studies evaluated malnutrition in patients hospitalized for COVID-19; more studies are warranted to investigate nutritional status specifically in non-hospitalized patients with olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions caused by COVID-19 infection.

Abstract:Abstract Background Qualitative smell/taste disorders (such as phantosmia, parosmia, phantogeusia, and parageusia) have not yet been fully characterized in patients who had COVID-19, whereas quantitative disturbances (i.e., reduction/loss of smell/taste) have been widely investigated. Objective To simultaneously assess the presence of both quantitative and qualitative smell/taste dysfunctions in patients who suffered from COVID-19. Methods We enrolled 17 consecutive patients who suffered from COVID-19 over the last 6 months and 21 healthy controls, matched for sex and age. After a negative nasopharyngeal swab, the Sniffin’ Sticks Test and the Taste Strips were used to assess olfactory and taste function, respectively. At the same time, the presence of phantosmia, parosmia, phantogeusia, and parageusia was investigated with a standardized questionnaire. Results Qualitative disturbances of smell and/or taste were found in 6/17 (35.3%) patients. Phantosmia was reported in 2/17 (11.8%) patients and parosmia in 4/17 (23.5%). There were no significant differences in smell test scores between patients who reported phantosmia and/or parosmia and patients who did not. Phantogeusia was described in 3/17 (17.6%) patients, and parageusia was identified in 4/17 (23.5%) patients. All tested patients were normogeusic. Conclusion Around one-third of patients who recover from COVID-19 may have persistent qualitative dysfunction in smell/taste domains. Detection of phantogeusia in long-term COVID-19 patients represents a further novel finding. Further investigation is needed to better characterize the pathophysiology of phantosmia, parosmia, phantogeusia, and parageusia in patients who had COVID-19.

Abstract:Abstract Objective : To explore food consumption and subsequent behavioural changes amongst PASC suffers associated with alterations in taste and smell. Design : A qualitative study involving five focus groups. Setting : Birmingham and Leicester, England, United Kingdom. Participants : Forty-seven Post-Acute Sequelae of COVID-19 sufferers. Results : Shifts in taste and odour were very common with disgusting or unpleasant notes being perceived in many foods, including animal products rich in protein. Food consumption patterns varied affecting nutrition status, individuals weight, types of foods consumed, cooking habits, coping mechanisms, anxieties, family and social interactions. Individuals expressed the need to taste something or experience normal tastes and flavour. Low pH foods, highly processed foods which may contain large amounts of refined sugars as well as cold processed food were the preferred items for consumption. Conclusion : Olfactory dysfunction was related to the consumption of nutrients that require moderation and to the quality of life. Intervention at an early stage is necessary in order to help avoid such complications and thus, this work informs medical practitioners and health workers of the variety of food choices that are more acceptable for people suffering from altered tastes and odour perception.
Taste changes experienced by patients receiving chemotherapy

Abstract:Purpose/objectives: To increase knowledge about the nature, frequency, and quality-of-life (QOL) effects associated with taste changes after chemotherapy. Design: Cross-sectional, descriptive. Setting: 11 outpatient urban and suburban oncology centers. Sample: 284 adults who had received at least two chemotherapy cycles. Methods: Patients completed a taste change questionnaire and the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General, and nurses collected demographic and disease-related information. Descriptive statistics, Spearman correlations, chi-square, Mann-Whitney, and Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance were calculated. Findings: Taste changes were frequent and at least moderately severe for many patients, who often reported dry mouth, decreased appetite, nausea, and vomiting. Cisplatin and doxorubicin were the agents most likely to be related to severe taste changes and to have caused greater distress from taste changes, which also were associated with decreased QOL. Oncology nurses and physicians rarely discussed taste changes with patients, who often tried changing the ways they seasoned their food. Conclusions: Taste changes are a frequent and significant problem for patients receiving chemotherapy and have negative effects on patients' QOL. Oncology nurses and physicians typically do not offer self-management suggestions to patients. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING RESEARCH AND PRACTICE: Repeated-measures research may provide a clearer understanding of chemotherapy-associated taste changes over time. Studies to examine strategies suggested from this and other research as well as clinical literature may determine which self-care interventions are most useful. Nurses should inform patients that taste changes may occur following chemotherapy, provide self-management information, and assess for related problems that could increase chemotherapy morbidity.

Abstract:Smell and taste impairments are recognized as common symptoms in COVID 19 patients even in an asymptomatic phase. Indeed, depending on the country, in up to 85–90% of cases anosmia and dysgeusia are reported. We will review briefly the main mechanisms involved in the physiology of olfaction and taste focusing on receptors and transduction as well as the main neuroanatomical pathways. Then we will examine the current evidences, even if still fragmented and unsystematic, explaining the disturbances and mode of action of the virus at the level of the nasal and oral cavities. We will focus on its impact on the peripheral and central nervous system. Finally, considering the role of smell and taste in numerous physiological functions, especially in ingestive behavior, we will discuss the consequences on the physiology of the patients as well as management regarding food intake.

Abstract:During the initial pandemic wave of COVID-19, apart from common presenting symptoms (cough, fever, and fatigue), many countries have reported a sudden increase in the number of smell and taste dysfunction patients. Smell dysfunction has been reported in other viral infections (parainfluenza, rhinovirus, SARS, and others), but the incidence is much lower than SARS-CoV-2 infection. The pathophysiology of post-infectious olfactory loss was hypothesized that viruses may produce an inflammatory reaction of the nasal mucosa or damage the olfactory neuroepithelium directly. However, loss of smell could be presented in COVID-19 patients without other rhinologic symptoms or significant nasal inflammation. This review aims to provide a brief overview of recent evidence for epidemiology, pathological mechanisms for the smell, and taste dysfunction in SARS-CoV-2 infected patients. Furthermore, prognosis and treatments are reviewed with scanty evidence. We also discuss the possibility of using "smell and taste loss" as a screening tool for COVID-19 and treatment options in the post-SARS-CoV-2 infectious olfactory loss.
The influence of pediatric cancer treatment on taste perception and food hedonics: a systematic review

Abstract:Children with cancer are at risk of poor nutritional status during treatment and into survivorship. Objectively measured taste perception and self-reported food hedonics are 2 factors that may influence food intake. This 2-armed systematic review examined whether chemotherapy and radiotherapy affect (1) taste perception and (2) hedonic experiences of children and survivors of childhood cancer. A 2-armed systematic literature search was conducted in the Medline, CINAHL, Embase, and PsychInfo database until June 2022. The effects of cancer treatment on objective taste perception or food hedonics (ie, food liking or aversion and appetite) were examined. Peer-reviewed articles published in English of studies that included children (aged <18 years) or survivors of childhood cancer (any age) were reviewed. Risk of bias was determined using the Evidence Analysis Library by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. A total of 1417 articles in the taste search arm and 3862 articles in the hedonics search arm were identified. Of these, 9 and 4 articles were eligible for review, respectively. Cancer treatment had highly variable effects on taste perception during treatment and into survivorship. Learned food aversions were experienced by children receiving chemotherapy treatment and liking of meats and salty foods by children with cancer was affected. The impact of treatment on appetite varied. Cancer treatment did not uniformly affect taste perception. Food liking may be negatively affected, and learned food aversions may develop during cancer treatment. To establish the clinical relevance of childhood cancer treatment on taste perception and food hedonics, more research is required. PROSPERO registration no.CRD42020207127.

Pathophysiology and possible treatments for olfactory-gustatory disorders in patients affected by COVID-19

Abstract:SARS-CoV-2 infects host cells mainly through the interaction between the virus's Spike protein and the viral receptors namely Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE2) and transmembrane serine protease 2 (TMPRSS2). Both are highly expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, in the nasal and bronchial epithelium, as well as in the type II alveolar epithelial cells. The aim of this review is to report the evidences from the scientific literature on the pathophysiology and the available treatments for olfactory-gustatory disorders in patients with COVID-19. The mechanisms involved in these disorders are still unclear and studies on specific therapies are scarce. However, it has been hypothesized that a decrease in the sensitivity of the sensory neurons as well as the co-expression of ACE2 and TMPRSS2 in the alveolar epithelial cells are the main causes of olfactory-gustatory disorders. The possible mechanisms described in the literature for changes in taste perception in patients with COVID-19 include olfactory disorders and a competitive activity of COVID-19 on ACE2 receptors in the taste buds. In addition, SARS-CoV-2 can bind to sialic acid receptors in the taste buds. In general, evidences show that there is no specific treatment for olfactory-taste disorders induced by SARS-CoV-2, even though some treatments have been used and have shown some promising results, such as olfactory training, intranasal application of sodium citrate and vitamin A, as well as systemic use of omega-3 and zinc. Corticosteroids have also been used as a pharmacological approach to treat patients with olfactory dysfunction with some contradictory results. The knowledge of the mechanisms by which SARS-CoV-2 influences the sensory systems and how effective therapies can treat the loss of smell and taste will have important implications on the understanding and clinical management of olfactory-taste disorders.
