Abstract:ObjectiveThe current longitudinal study aims to examine the bidirectional relationship between post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and post-traumatic growth (PTG).MethodOne hundred twenty-two adults in the most severely affected area were investigated by self-report questionnaires at 12 months and 18 months after the Wenchuan Earthquake occurred in China.ResultsThe autoregressive cross-lagged structure equation analysis revealed that PTG at 12 months post-earthquake could negatively predict PTSS at 18 months post-earthquake above and beyond PTSS stability, whereas PTSS at 12 months post-earthquake could not significantly predict subsequent PTG. Moreover, PTG at 12 months post-earthquake could predict fewer subsequent intrusions, numbing and hyper-arousal symptoms but not avoidance symptoms.ConclusionGrowth can play a role in reducing long-term post-traumatic stress symptoms, and the implication of a positive perspective in post-trauma circumstance is discussed.

Abstract:Positive health endpoints are not the opposite of negative endpoints. Previous studies examining posttraumatic stress disorders (PTSD) and posttraumatic growth (PTG) trajectories have overlooked the co-existence of PTSD and PTG, making it difficult to accurately distinguish individuals with various posttraumatic presentations, causing the effects of targeted interventions to be discounted. To fill this gap, the current study sought to examine joint PTSD and PTG trajectories in children and adolescents. Eight hundred and seventy-six Chinese children and adolescents were recruited to complete self-report questionnaires 6, 12, and 18 months after the Ya'an earthquake. Multiple-process growth mixture modeling analysis was used to test the study proposal. Five distinct joint PTSD and PTG trajectory types were found: recovery, growth, struggling, resistant, and delayed symptoms. Female students and students who felt trapped or fearful were more likely to be in the struggling group, and students who experienced injury to themselves or family members were more likely to belong to the delayed symptom group. These findings suggest that postdisaster psychological services should be provided to relieve delayed symptoms in individuals who experience injury to themselves or their family members, and individuals in the struggling group should be supported to achieve growth.
Leg Extension Power is a Pre-Disaster Modifiable Risk Factor for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder among Survivors of the Great East Japan Earthquake: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Abstract:Background: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common psychological problem following natural disasters. Although pre-disaster risk factors are important for early detection and proactive support, the examination of such has been limited to sociodemographic factors, which were largely unaffected by the disasters. We examined the association between pre-disaster physical functioning and lifestyle and PTSD symptoms five months after the earthquake in the Great East Japan Earthquake survivors who were participating in a pre-existing cohort study.Methods: We designed a retrospective cohort study of a cooperative association in Sendai from August 2010 to August 2011. In 2010, lifestyle, physical condition, and sociodemographic factors were examined by self-reported questionnaires completed by 522 employees of this organization. We also measured the leg extension power of all the participants. PTSD symptoms were evaluated by the Japanese version of the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R-J) following the earthquake of 2011.Results: In multivariate linear regression analysis, leg extension power (beta = -0.128, P = 0.025), daily drinking (beta = 0.203, P = 0.006), and depressive symptoms (beta = 0.139, P = 0.008) were associated with total score of the IES-R-J among men. Moreover, for the IES-R-J subscale, leg extension power was also negatively associated with Intrusion (beta = -0.114, P = 0.045) and Hyperarousal (beta = -0.163, P = 0.004) after adjusting for all other significant variables. For women, hypertension (b = 0.226, P = 0.032) and depressive symptoms (beta = 0.205, P = 0.046) were associated with the total score of the IES-R-J.Conclusions: Leg extension power is a potentially modifiable pre-disaster risk factor among men for attenuating the severity of PTSD symptoms associated with great disasters such as the Great East Japan Earthquake among men.
Longitudinal Linkages Between Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Posttraumatic Growth in Adolescent Survivors Following the Wenchuan Earthquake in China: A Three-Wave, Cross-Lagged Study

Abstract:The aim of this study is to examine the longitudinal relationships between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and posttraumatic growth (PTG) among adolescent survivors of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake in China. The participants in our study included 245 adolescent survivors who were randomly selected from several primary and secondary schools in the counties of Wenchuan, which are the areas most severely affected by the Wenchuan earthquake. Participants completed the Revised Child PTSD Symptom Scale and the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI) at 3.5 years after the earthquake (T1), 4.5 years after the earthquake (T2), and 5.5 years after the earthquake (T3). The results found that PTSD reported in T1 and T2 predicted subsequent PTG reported at T2 and T3 and that PTG did not predict PTSD from T1 to T3. In addition, the cross-sectional correlation between PTSD and PTG weakened from T1 to T3. These results indicate that PTSD and PTG can coexist in individuals after a traumatic experience, and they further suggest that the reduction in PTSD does not indicate the appearance of PTG.
Longitudinal linkages between social support, posttraumatic stress disorder, and posttraumatic growth among primary school students after the Ya' an earthquake

Abstract:It has been repeatedly documented that posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common negative outcome in trauma-related research. Nevertheless, traumatized individuals also reported positive psychological changes in various aspects of life such as personal strength, relationship, and appreciation of life, that were collectively defined as posttraumatic growth (PTG). PTG has been described in many studies as evident in survivor reports following a wide range of traumatic events. Importantly, PTSD and PTG may co-exist in trauma survivors, leading to a heated discussion on the relation between PTSD and PTG. Nevertheless, the relation between PTSD and PTG still remains mixed. For example, some studies found a positive relation between them, indicating that individuals who had high PTSD reported increased PTG. In contrary, some found a negative relation, suggesting that PTG and PTSD could be conceptualized as the two ends of the same continuum. Some even failed to find a significant relation between them, arguing that PTSD and PTG were two independent constructs. The inconsistent findings inhibited our understanding in the relation between the two constructs, thus it is necessary to examine simultaneously the predictive factors of PTSD and PTG to elucidate their relation. Wherein, social support is considered as one of the most important predictors of posttraumatic reactions. Several theories were proposed to explain the role of social support in posttraumatic outcomes, and studies indicated that social support was a protector for PTSD while a facilitator for PTG. Nevertheless, few research has examined the linkages between social support, PTSD, and PTG from a longitudinal perspective. In order to advance the gaps and to assess the longitudinal relation between social support, PTSD, and PTG, we selected 303 children to fill out a social support questionnaire, a children posttraumatic stress scale, and a posttraumatic growth inventory at 6 months (T1), 12 months (T2), and 18 months (T3) after the Ya'an earthquake, respectively. Firstly, a cross-lagged model between PTSD and PTG was built, and the results indicated that PTG had no significant effect on PTSD from T1 to T3, but PTSD at T1 had a significant positive effect on PTG at T2. However, the effect of PTSD at T2 on PTG at T3 was non-significant. Then, we inserted social support into the above cross-lagged model, and found no change in the relation between PTSD and PTG. Additionally, social support at T1 had a direct and negative effect on PTSD at T2 but not vice-versa, and there were not any significant mutual effects between social support and PTG from T1 to T2. Moreover, PTSD at T2 had a significant negative effect on social support at T3 but not vice-versa, and there were significant positive and mutual effects between social support and PTG from T2 to T3.
Longitudinal Development of Primary and Secondary Posttraumatic Growth in Aging Veterans and Their Wives: Domain-Specific Trajectories.

Abstract:Resumen Posttraumatic growth (PTG), the positive psychological transformations that follow traumatic events, affects both direct survivors (primary PTG) and their significant others (secondary PTG). Though primary and secondary PTG have been widely investigated in the literature, their long-term trajectories decades after a traumatic event, especially as survivors enter older age, remain largely uninvestigated. Furthermore, it remains contested whether PTG adds up to a monolithic construct or rather consists of relatively independent components. Addressing these issues, we assessed a sample of Israeli male veterans from the 1973 Yom Kippur war (N = 349) and their wives (N = 156) at three time points over the course of nearly three decades. Both the veterans (primary survivors) and their wives (secondary survivors) reported PTG relating to the veterans' experiences during the war and/or captivity. Latent growth mixture modeling was conducted to identify trajectories of PTG on the five subscales of the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory. Long-term trajectories of PTG followed heterogeneous patterns of fluctuation over time and particularly as participants entered older age. On most subscales, decreasing PTG scores were evident, a trend that was more pronounced among the primary survivors than the secondary survivors as primary and secondary PTG fluctuate considerably in the long-term and seem to decrease as individuals enter older age. Furthermore, it would seem that PTG should not be considered a holistic concept but rather a conglomeration of positive changes. Implications of the findings are discussed within the context of limitations and potential intervening factors.
The Latent Transition of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Growth among Adolescents Surviving Jiuzhaigou Earthquake.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:Knowledge of longitudinal changes in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and posttraumatic growth (PTG) may help survivors recover better. Yet, researchers dispute the population-based typologies of PTSD and PTG as well as the temporal transition between these subpopulations across time, especially among adolescents. Thus, the transition pattern still needs further research. Besides, parent-child factors (parenting styles, parent-child cohesion, and parental attachment styles) may influence the transition, but it keeps unclear. In the study, we aimed to solve these questions. METHOD:A three-wave investigation was conducted among 620 adolescents, 12 months, 21 months, and 27 months, after the Jiuzhaigou earthquake by using self-report measures on PTSD, PTG, and parent-child factors at the three time points. Finally, 339 of them finished the three-wave investigation. RESULTS:Latent profile analysis models showed that three heterogeneous classes of PTSD and PTG existed across time: low-affected (low-level PTSD and PTG), thriving (low-level PTSD but high-level PTG), and struggling (high-level PTSD and PTG) groups. Random intercept latent transition analysis model suggested that samples mainly stayed in the original classes across time, with three main transitional paths: from struggling group to thriving group, from thriving group to low-affected group, and from low-affected group to struggling group. Besides, the study also found that parental rejection, overprotection, and anxious attachment were the possible factors that kept the stability of the struggling group. Parent-child cohesion increased the stability of the thriving group across time. Anxious attachment may worsen PTSD among adolescents and lower the stability of low-affected groups across time. CONCLUSIONS:Coexisting and transitional patterns exist in PTSD and PTG across time. Wrong parenting styles and insecure attachments can exacerbate PTSD symptoms and diminish adolescents' resilience, but parent-child cohesion can facilitate their growth after trauma. Abstract:Thirty two domestic dogs with naturally occurring polyarthritis were investigated to determine the contribution of autoimmunity in the pathological mechanisms. Comparisons were made with canine infective arthritis (12 dogs), osteoarthritis (32), and osteoarthritis secondary to rupture of the cranial cruciate ligament (19). Rheumatoid factors, immune complexes, and complement fixation (C1q binding) were measured in sera and synovial fluids. Compared with normal dogs (32), dogs with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) had increased serum and synovial fluid immune complexes and rheumatoid factors. Increases were generally also seen in dogs with other arthropathies, however. Rheumatoid factors were higher in sera than in synovial fluids. Rheumatoid factors correlated with immune complex levels and complexed rheumatoid factor only in the group of dogs with RA. Both rheumatoid factors and immune complexes may contribute to the pathogenesis of canine RA but are considered to arise as a result of non-specific inflammatory mechanisms in the non-rheumatoid groups.
Resilience Factors Affecting Long-Term Trajectories of Depressive Symptoms in the Aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami among Older Adults

Abstract:OBJECTIVES:We examined long-term trajectories of depressive symptoms among older adults following exposure to the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. We further characterized the pre- and post-disaster social relationship factors that predicted membership in each trajectory group. METHOD:Data from four time points (including pre-disaster data) were used to analyze the depression trajectories of 2,033 survivors through a group-based trajectory model. Multinomial logistic analysis was used to investigate the social relationship factors (i.e., social interactions with neighbors, social support, social participation, and social cohesion) that predicted membership to each trajectory group. RESULTS:Five distinct trajectories of depressive symptoms were identified; stably not depressed (12.4%), increased after the disaster (14.2%), decreased after the disaster (8.8%), persistent mild depressive symptoms (28.1%) and persistent severe depressive symptoms (36.5%). Compared to those who were stably not depressed, those who experienced an increase in symptoms were more likely to experience housing damage and not to participate in social activities. Compared to those who were stably mildly depressed, those who experienced a decrease in symptoms had higher pre-disaster social interactions with neighbors as well as higher post-disaster social support. Adults with persistent severe symptoms were physically, psychologically, and socially vulnerable preceding the disaster. DISCUSSION:The study revealed the heterogeneity of older adults experiencing depressive symptoms in the wake of major disaster. Those who experienced increased symptoms after the disaster showed a chronic rather than temporary rise, while those with pre-disaster depressive symptoms showed sustained symptoms regardless of disaster-related trauma.

Abstract:Objective: Studies have indicated that trauma exposure is a common factor in posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSSs) and posttraumatic growth (PTG), but it is unclear whether PTSSs and PTG share a common underlying mechanism related to trauma exposure. To explore this issue, this study examined the mediating role of feelings of safety, hope, and coping strategies between trauma exposure and both PTSSs and PTG to elucidate differences in their underlying mechanisms. Method: One year following the Jiuzhaigou earthquake in Sichuan province, China, 620 adolescents were selected to answer self-report questionnaires, and a structural equation model was used to test the hypotheses. Results: Trauma exposure was positively associated with PTSSs by two 1-step indirect paths of feelings of safety and emotion-focused coping strategies, and by two 2-step indirect paths of feelings of safety to both hope and emotion-focused coping strategies. Trauma exposure was positively associated with PTG by a 1-step indirect path of problem-focused coping strategies but negatively associated with PTG by two 2-step indirect paths of feelings of safety to both hope and problem-focused coping strategies, and by one 3-step indirect path of feelings of safety to hope to problem-focused coping strategies. Conclusions: Trauma exposure is common to PTSSs and PTG but affects these differently via feelings of safety, feelings of hope, and coping strategies. Clinical Impact Statement This study suggests that trauma exposure is a common factor to both PTSSs and PTG but that there are distinct underlying mechanisms by which trauma exposure affects PTSSs and PTG. Therefore, a variety of targeted intervention strategies are needed to increase PTG and alleviate PTSSs. The mediating role of feelings of safety, hope, and coping strategies suggests that following an earthquake, we need to boost adolescents' feelings of safety, help them to reconstruct their feelings of hope, and encourage them to use problem-coping strategies to buffer the severity of PTSSs and improve levels of PTG.
Understanding the Relationship Between Social Support and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder/posttraumatic Growth among Adolescents after Ya’an Earthquake: the Role of Emotion Regulation.

Abstract:Objective: Posttraumatic distress disorder (PTSD) and posttraumatic growth (PTG) may coexist in trauma survivors, but there are mixed relationships between PTSD and PTG. To elucidate their relationship and constructs, it is necessary to examine simultaneously predictive factors, and to compare their determining factors. The aim of this study was to increasing our understanding the relationship between PTSD and PTG by examining simultaneously the role of social support and emotion regulation in PTSD and PTG among adolescents after the earthquake. Methods: Six months after the Ya’an earthquake, 315 middle school students in Lushan county were assessed using measures of trauma exposure, social support, and emotion regulation, as well as Child PTSD Symptom Scale and Posttraumatic Growth Inventory. Results: Social support had significant direct association with PTG but not with PTSD, but social support had a negative indirect prediction on PTSD and a positive indirect prediction on PTG through cognitive reappraisal. Social support, through expressive suppression, had a significant and indirect prediction on PTSD, but a nonsignificant indirect prediction on PTG. Conclusions: This study indicate that the predictive mechanism of PTSD and PTG were different and further suggest that PTSD and PTG are separate, independent dimensions of psychological experiences following adversity.
Relationships Between Latent Factors of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Posttraumatic Growth

Abstract:In the present study, we examined posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and posttraumatic growth (PTG) responses among a nonclinical sample of 202 participants. Instruments included the PTSD Checklist for the DSM-5 (fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) and Posttraumatic Growth Inventory. Confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated the most support for the 6-factor DSM-5 PTSD model and 5-factor PTG model, previously supported in the literature. Canonical correlation analysis evidenced a strong relationship between PTSD and PTG subscales. Path analysis results demonstrated that PTSD's re-experiencing subscale was related to PTG's appreciation for life subscale. Posttraumatic stress disorder's avoidance was related to PTG's personal strength subscale. We also tested curvilinear relationships between PTSD and PTG subscales. Results and implications are discussed in the context of the constructs of PTSD and PTG.
Latent Structure of Posttraumatic Growth and Its Temporal Stability among a Sample of Chinese Children Following an Earthquake

Abstract:Since the introduction of the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), the factor structure of PTG has been a hot topic of debate. Nevertheless, no consensus has been achieved to date. Previous researchers have focused mainly on adults, such that the applicability of this measure to traumatized children remains rather unclear. Although several studies have suggested that time since trauma might influence PTG factor structure, no study has examined the stability of the factor structure of PTG over time. Thus, the present study aimed to assess the factor structure of PTG among traumatized children following the Ya'an earthquake, and to specifically examine PTG optimal factor structure over time. Self-report scales were administered to 303 children, 6 months after the earthquake. A five-factor structure of PTG that includes relating to others, new possibilities, personal strength, spiritual changes, and appreciation of life had the best fit indices among all five structural models of PTG examined. The five factor structure of PTG satisfied the factor loading invariance criterion but did not satisfy the item intercept and factor variance invariance criteria. This study extends the extant literature on the five factor structure of PTG from adults to a child sample and confirms that the five factor structure is stable across time, but that PTG scores are indeed moderated by time since trauma. Implications for clinical practice and future research are discussed along with study limitations.
Long-Term Trajectories of Cognitive Disability among Older Adults Following a Major Disaster

Abstract:Importance:Older adults are at high risk for cognitive impairments following natural disasters, but the persistence of such effects is not well understood. Objective:To track older adults' postdisaster cognitive disability trajectories over a decade and examine associations of cognitive disability with disaster damage exposure. Design, Setting, and Participants:This prospective cohort study used predisaster baseline surveys conducted in August 2010 and 4 follow-ups approximately every 3 years until November 10, 2022. Invitations were mailed at baseline to all citizens 65 years or older in Iwanuma City, Japan, a coastal municipality significantly impacted by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. A total of 1988 respondents who were cognitively independent (ie, without cognitive disability) before the disaster completed the 4 postdisaster cognitive assessments. Exposures:Experiences of residential damage, worsening financial conditions, loss of loved ones, and disruption in health care services. A composite score quantified these experiences, with higher scores indicating greater overall damage. Main Outcomes and Measures:Cognitive disability level was assessed using a standardized in-home evaluation under a national long-term care insurance scheme. Trained investigators evaluated participants' activities of daily living, cognitive function, and presence of mental and/or behavioral disorders. Latent class growth analyses (LCGA) identified distinct cognitive disability trajectories. Primary outcomes consisted of inclusion in these trajectories. Results:The analytic sample consisted of 1988 participants who were cognitively independent at baseline, with a mean (SD) age of 72.4 (5.4) years, of whom 1159 (58.3%) were female. LCGA identified 3 cognitive disability trajectories: high and gradual deterioration (277 [13.9%]; high levels of cognitive disability with increasing impairment over time), low and progressive deterioration (541 [27.2%]; low levels of cognitive disability with accelerated decline in cognitive function over time), and low and stable (1170 [58.9%]; low levels of cognitive disability that remained stable). In multinomial regression analyses with the low and stable trajectory serving as the reference, housing damage (adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 2.52; 95% CI, 1.26-5.04), worsening financial conditions (AOR, 1.83; 95% CI, 1.15-2.90), and disruption in health care services (AOR, 1.76; 95% CI, 1.03-2.99) were associated with high and gradual deterioration. Worsening financial conditions (AOR, 1.38; 95% CI, 1.01-1.90) and higher composite damage scores (AOR, 1.16; 95% CI, 1.01-1.34) were associated with low and progressive deterioration. These associations no longer remained after adjusting for postdisaster depressive symptoms. Conclusions and Relevance:In this cohort study of older adults who survived the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, disaster-related exposures were associated with worse long-term cognitive disability trajectories. These findings could inform tailored interventions to preserve cognitive function in older disaster survivors.

Abstract:Background: The group population of older adults has suffered the highest number of deaths and impact on health associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Many older adults can perceive this pandemic as a traumatic experience. However, many older adults may have also experienced positive changes, defined as post-traumatic growth (PTG). Several factors may enhance or hinder this possibility of development. Objective: This study aimed to analyze if the effects of COVID-19 affection (direct and indirect), anxiety and depression on PTG would be mediated by the protective variables life purpose and resilience. Method: 359 older adults over 60 years old completed a web-based survey during the COVID-19 pandemic including sociodemographic data, direct/indirect affectation by COVID-19, anxiety, depression, resilience, life purpose and PTG. Preliminary results on the ongoing study: 63.2% of the participants were women and 58.2% were married. 89.1% had been infected by COVID-19, 1.7% had been hospitalized, 15.6% had lost a loved one and 17.2% have had a relative hospitalized because of COVID-19. Women (M = 56.77; SD = 18.00) showed higher levels of PTG than men (M = 52.41; SD = 17.84) (t = -2.19; p < .05). Differences in the outcome variables based on direct or indirect COVID-19 affection were not found. The path analysis showed that the effect of COVID-19 symptoms on PTG was mainly mediated by life purpose, and anxiety to a lesser extent. We also confirmed two indirect effects: (1) the negative effect of depression on PTG through resilience and life purpose assessed simultaneously; (2) the positive effect of resilience on PTG through life purpose. Results showed an excellent model fit to this model (χ2 = 3.759; χ2/gl = 5; p = .585; GFI = .997; CFI = .999; RMSEA = .001). Conclusion: The identification of protective and vulnerability variables is essential to protect older adults from mental disorders. This study highlights the need for developing interventions that aim to increase PTG by promoting life purpose and resilience.

Abstract:Researchhas shown that posttraumatic reactions can co-occur in trauma-exposed individuals. Many studies have assessed the co-occurring patterns of two types of reactions, but few have assessed the patterns of multiple reactions. To build on existing knowledge, the present study examined co-occurring patterns of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, depressive symptoms, and posttraumatic growth (PTG) among adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants (N = 683) were adolescents selected from an area in China severely affected by COVID-19 who completed the PTSD Checklist, a measure of depression, a PTG inventory, and a cognitive emotional regulation questionnaire. Latent profile analysis and multinomial logistic regression were used for the data analyses. The results showed three heterogeneous patterns characterized by growth (n = 248, 36.3%), distress (n = 101, 14.8%), and struggle (n = 334, 48.9%). Positive refocusing and reappraisal were associated with membership in the growth group compared with distress group, OR = 0.83, 95% CI [0.75, 0.93] and OR = 0.78, 95% CI [0.68, 0.90], whereas rumination, catastrophizing, and "putting into perspective" were associated with membership in the distress group compared with growth group, ORs = 1.15-1.44. These findings suggest that posttraumatic reactions show heterogeneous characteristics: struggle, rather than growth or distress, is common among adolescents during COVID-19; and distinct cognitive emotional regulation strategies have distinguishing roles in the three patterns of posttraumatic reactions.

Abstract:Previous theoretical research has indicated that hope, cognitive reappraisal, and acceptance may contribute to posttraumatic growth (PTG). However, the combined effects of these factors on PTG have not yet been evaluated. Therefore, the current study examined the mediating roles of cognitive reappraisal and acceptance in the relationship between hope and PTG among Chinese adolescents following the Ya'an earthquake. The sample included 397 adolescent survivors, who completed self-report measures 2.5 years after the earthquake. The mediating effects were assessed by constructing a multiple indirect effects model. The findings indicated that traumatic exposure only have predictive value for PTG, but not other variables. Moreover, when we controlled for gender, age, and traumatic exposure, hope had a direct and positive effect on PTG. We found an indirect and positive effect of hope on PTG via cognitive reappraisal and acceptance, as well as via an indirect path from cognitive reappraisal to acceptance. These findings suggest that utilising the mediating roles of cognitive reappraisal and acceptance in the relationship between hope and PTG is crucial in developing methods for fostering PTG.

Abstract:BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Posttraumatic stress disorder, a commonly researched mental health outcome associated with trauma, does not develop in the majority of survivors. More common trajectories of adaptation include resilience, and posttraumatic growth (PTG). The objectives of the current study were to: (1) describe posttrauma adaptation profiles in a sample of Israeli male military veterans (N = 448); and (2) to explore the protective factors that promote constructive PTG within two profiles of posttrauma adaptation.METHODS: The study used secondary data to estimate latent profile mixture models and a series of logistic regression analyses.RESULTS: Demographic controls, combat related variables, endorsement of coping strategies, and reports of improvement in social support were not significant predictors of constructive growth in the resilient class. However, those in the struggling growth subset of the sample who reported improvement in perceived social support increased the odds of reaching constructive growth.CONCLUSION: These findings highlight the importance of tailored clinical interventions that account for more complex profiles of posttrauma adaptation; and further, provide evidence that adaptation takes place over time. Finally, these findings call for future research to continue to explore the quality of PTG and the contexts in which protective factors promote positive adaptation.

Abstract:Objective: Few studies have investigated the relationship between received social support (actual help received) and posttraumatic growth (PTG), and these studies focused only on the quantity of support received. This study examined the joint implications of both the quantity and quality of postdisaster received social support for PTG. Method: Data were collected from Lushan earthquake (China, in 2013) survivors at 7 (n = 199) and 31 (n = 161) months after the earthquake. The main effects of quantity and quality of received support, and the interaction between support quantity and support quality, were examined using hierarchical multiple regression analyses controlling for the extent of disaster exposure, postdisaster negative life events, and sociodemographic factors. Results: Neither quantity nor quality of received social support exerted significant main effects on PTG. However, the influence of the amount of received social support on PTG was moderated by the quality of received social support. Among survivors who appraised the postdisaster social support they received as higher in quality, greater amounts of received support were associated with more subsequent PTG. Among those survivors who appraised the postdisaster social support they received as lower in quality, greater quantity of received support was associated with lower levels of reported PTG. Conclusion: This study calls attention to the importance of enhancing the quality of help provided to disaster survivors because simply "more" support is not necessarily better. Clinical Impact Statement This study shows that receiving efficacious social support following potentially traumatic events may promote emergence of psychological benefits and advantageous transformations. Receiving help from others may facilitate posttraumatic growth, but it is its quality that matters the most. Received social support that does not adequately meet survivors' specific needs, that is not delivered skillfully, and/or is not delivered in a timely fashion, could be potentially disadvantageous for the experience of posttraumatic growth. Thus, both informal and formal postdisaster relief efforts and interventions should aim to enhance the quality of social support delivered along with attention to the adequacy of the amount of help offered.
