Abstract:Several studies have shown that emotions are asymmetrically represented in the human brain and have proposed three main models (the 'right hemisphere hypothesis', the 'approach-withdrawal hypothesis' and the 'valence hypothesis') that give different accounts of this emotional laterality. Furthermore, in recent years, many investigations have suggested that a similar emotional laterality may also exist in different animal taxa. However, results of a previous systematic review of emotional laterality in non-human primates have shown that some of these studies might be criticized from the methodological point of view and support only in part the hypothesis of a continuum in emotional laterality across vertebrates. The aim of the present review therefore consisted in trying to expand this survey to other cognitively developed and highly social mammals, focusing attention on mainly visual aspects of emotional laterality, in studies conducted on the animal categories of horses, elephants, dolphins and whales. The 35 studies included in the review took into account three aspects of mainly visual emotional laterality, namely: (a) visual asymmetries for positive/familiar vs. negative/novel stimuli; (b) lateral position preference in mother–offspring or other affiliative interactions; (c) lateral position preference in antagonistic interactions. In agreement with data obtained from human studies that have evaluated comprehension or expression of emotions at the facial or vocal level, these results suggest that a general but graded right-hemisphere prevalence in the processing of emotions can be found at the visual level in cognitively developed non-primate social mammals. Some methodological problems and some implications of these results for human psychopathology are briefly discussed.

Abstract:The presence of myeloma cells in the blood circulation. implicates that these cells must have the potential to extravasate and home to the bone marrow environment. Using the 5T2 MM mouse model, we could demonstrate that the restricted localization of myeloma cells in the bone marrow is the result of selective migration of myeloma cells in the bone marrow combined with a selective growth of the tumour cells in the bone marrow microenvironment. Moreover, we showed that 5T2 MM cells bind in vitro selectively to bone marrow-derived endothelial cells (EC) and not to lung-derived EC. In order to identify which chemotactic molecules mediate the transendothelial migration of myeloma cells, we examined the motility-inducing effect of different extracellular matrix proteins on myeloma cell lines. We found that laminin-1 a major component of the basement membrane, triggers the motility of both human myeloma cells and 5T2 MM cells, through the 67 kD laminin receptor. Because of the broad distribution of laminin in extracellular matrices throughout the body, it is clear that this molecule on itself can not be the only factor that determines the specificity of myeloma cell homing. In the 5T2 MM model we identified IGF-1 as a more specific bone marrow derived chemoattractant for myeloma cells. In addition we demonstrated that the marrow microenvironment can upregulate the expression of the IGF-1 receptor on 5T mouse myeloma cells. In the end phase of the disease, increasing numbers of myeloma cells are detectable in the peripheral blood and extramedullary tumour growth can occur. We found that the stroma-independent variant of the human MM5 myeloma cell line showed an increased in vitro motility as compared to the stroma-dependent variant. By representational difference analysis we demonstrated that the stroma-dependent MM5 cells show a downregulation of the motility-related protein (MRP-I CD9) which might reflect the involvement of this molecule in the regulation of myeloma cell extravasation.

Abstract:Abstract Resting-state fMRI studies have revealed that individuals exhibit stable, functionally meaningful divergences in large-scale network organization. The locations with strongest deviations (called network “variants”) have a characteristic spatial distribution, with qualitative evidence from prior reports suggesting that this distribution differs across hemispheres. Hemispheric asymmetries can inform us on constraints guiding the development of these idiosyncratic regions. Here, we used data from the Human Connectome Project to systematically investigate hemispheric differences in network variants. Variants were significantly larger in the right hemisphere, particularly along the frontal operculum and medial frontal cortex. Variants in the left hemisphere appeared most commonly around the TPJ. We investigated how variant asymmetries vary by functional network and how they compare with typical network distributions. For some networks, variants seemingly increase group-average network asymmetries (e.g., the group-average language network is slightly bigger in the left hemisphere and variants also appeared more frequently in that hemisphere). For other networks, variants counter the group-average network asymmetries (e.g., the default mode network is slightly bigger in the left hemisphere, but variants were more frequent in the right hemisphere). Intriguingly, left- and right-handers differed in their network variant asymmetries for the cingulo-opercular and frontoparietal networks, suggesting that variant asymmetries are connected to lateralized traits. These findings demonstrate that idiosyncratic aspects of brain organization differ systematically across the hemispheres. We discuss how these asymmetries in brain organization may inform us on developmental constraints of network variants and how they may relate to functions differentially linked to the two hemispheres.

Abstract:Permanent scatterers (PS) approach allows the identification of radar targets not affected by decorrelation noise then suitable for reliable SAR interferometric measurements. This paper introduces a new technique allowing the selection of stable scatterers based on adaptative SVA (Spatially Variant Apodization) filtering. Indeed, SVA filters identify SAR pixels with strong reflectivity (maximum of the mainlobe) over a long temporal series of interferometric SAR images which is the main feature of Permanent Scatterers pixels. A comparison between PS candidates pixels and selected SVA pixels is discussed in this study.

Abstract:Over the last few decades, work in affective neuroscience has increasingly investigated the neural basis of emotion. A central debate in the field, when studying individuals with brain damage, has been whether emotional processes are lateralized or not. This review aims to expand this debate, by considering the need to include a hierarchical dimension to the problem. The historical journey of the diverse literature is presented, particularly focusing on the need to develop a research program that explores the neural basis of a wide range of emotional processes (perception, expression, experience, regulation, decision making, etc.), and also its relation to lateralized cortical and deep-subcortical brain structures. Of especial interest is the study of the interaction between emotional components; for example, between emotion generation and emotion regulation. Finally, emerging evidence from lesion studies is presented regarding the neural basis of emotion-regulation strategies, for which the issue of laterality seems most relevant. It is proposed that, because emotion-regulation strategies are complex higher-order cognitive processes, the question appears to be not the lateralization of the entire emotional process, but the lateralization of the specific cognitive tools we use to manage our feelings, in a range of different ways.

Abstract:Hemispheric lateralization constitutes a core architectural principle of human brain organization underlying cognition, often argued to represent a stable, trait-like feature. However, emerging evidence underlines the inherently dynamic nature of brain networks, in which time-resolved alterations in functional lateralization remain uncharted. Integrating dynamic network approaches with the concept of hemispheric laterality, we map the spatiotemporal architecture of whole-brain lateralization in a large sample of high-quality resting-state fMRI data (N=991, Human Connectome Project). We reveal distinct laterality dynamics across lower-order sensorimotor systems and higher-order associative networks. Specifically, we expose two aspects of the laterality dynamics: laterality fluctuations, defined as the standard deviation of laterality time series, and laterality reversal, referring to the number of zero-crossings in laterality time series. These two measures are associated with moderate and extreme changes in laterality over time, respectively. While laterality fluctuations depict positive association with language function and cognitive flexibility, laterality reversal shows a negative association with the same neurocognitive factors. These opposing interactions indicate a dynamic balance between intra- and inter-hemispheric communication, i.e., segregation and integration of information across hemispheres. Furthermore, in their time-resolved laterality index, the default-mode and language networks correlate negatively with visual/sensorimotor and attention networks, indicating flexible while parallel processing capabilities that are linked to better out-of-scanner cognitive performance. Finally, the laterality dynamics correlate with regional metabolism and structural connectivity and showed significant heritability. Our results provide insights into the adaptive nature of the lateralized brain and new perspectives for future studies of human cognition, genetics and brain disorders.

Abstract:Abstract Emotions are valenced mental responses and associated physiological reactions that occur spontaneously and automatically in response to internal or external stimuli, and can influence our behavior, and can themselves be modulated to a certain degree voluntarily or by external stimuli. They are subserved by large-scale integrated neuronal networks with epicenters in the amygdala and the hippocampus, and which overlap in the anterior cingulate cortex. Although emotion processing is accepted as being lateralized, the specific role of each hemisphere remains an issue of controversy, and two major hypotheses have been proposed. In the right-hemispheric dominance hypothesis, all emotions are thought to be processed in the right hemisphere, independent of their valence or of the emotional feeling being processed. In the valence lateralization hypothesis, the left is thought to be dominant for the processing of positively valenced stimuli, or of stimuli inducing approach behaviors, whereas negatively valenced stimuli, or stimuli inducing withdrawal behaviors, would be processed in the right hemisphere. More recent research points at the existence of multiple interrelated networks, each associated with the processing of a specific component of emotion generation, i.e., its generation, perception, and regulation. It has thus been proposed to move from hypotheses supporting an overall hemispheric specialization for emotion processing toward dynamic models incorporating multiple interrelated networks which do not necessarily share the same lateralization patterns.

Abstract:A low number of individuals show an atypical brain control of language functions that differs from the typical lateralization in the left cerebral hemisphere. In these cases, the neural distribution of other cognitive functions is not fully understood. Although there is a bias towards a mirrored brain organization consistent with the Causal hypothesis, some individuals are found to be exceptions to this rule. However, no study has focused on what happens to the homologous language areas in the right frontal inferior cortex. Using an fMRI-adapted stop-signal task in a healthy non right-handed sample (50 typically lateralized and 36 atypically lateralized for language production), our results show that atypical lateralization is associated with a mirrored brain organization of the inhibitory control network in the left hemisphere: inferior frontal cortex, presupplementary motor area, and subthalamic nucleus. However, the individual analyses revealed a large number of cases with a noteworthy overlap in the inferior frontal gyrus, which shared both inhibitory and language functions. Further analyses showed that atypical lateralization was associated with stronger functional interhemispheric connectivity and larger corpus callosum. Importantly, we did not find task performance differences as a function of lateralization, but there was an association between atypical dominance in the inferior frontal cortex and higher scores on schizotypy and autistic spectrum traits, as well as worse performance on a reading accuracy test. Together, these results partially support the Causal hypothesis of hemispheric specialization and provide further evidence of the link between atypical hemispheric lateralization and increased interhemispheric transfer through the corpus callosum.

Abstract:Although the left and right hemispheres of our brains develop with a high degree of symmetry at both the anatomical and functional levels, it has become clear that subtle structural differences exist between the two sides and that each is dominant in processing specific cognitive tasks. As the result of evolutionary conservation or convergence, lateralization of the brain is found in both vertebrates and invertebrates, suggesting that it provides significant fitness for animal life. This widespread feature of hemispheric specialization has allowed the emergence of model systems to study its development and, in some cases, to link anatomical asymmetries to brain function and behavior. Here, we present some of what is known about brain asymmetry in humans and model organisms as well as what is known about the impact of environmental and genetic factors on brain asymmetry development. We specifically highlight the progress made in understanding the development of epithalamic asymmetries in zebrafish and how this model provides an exciting opportunity to address brain asymmetry at different levels of complexity.

Abstract:On the surface, the two hemispheres of vertebrate brains look almost perfectly symmetrical, but several motor, sensory, and cognitive systems show a deeply lateralized organization. Importantly, the two hemispheres are connected by various commissures, white matter tracts that cross the brain’s midline and enable cross-hemispheric communication. Cross-hemispheric communication has been suggested to play an important role in the emergence of lateralized brain functions. Here, we review current advances in understanding cross-hemispheric communication that have been made using modern neuroscientific tools in rodents and other model species, such as genetic labeling, large-scale recordings of neuronal activity, spatiotemporally precise perturbation, and quantitative behavior analyses. These findings suggest that the emergence of lateralized brain functions cannot be fully explained by largely static factors such as genetic variation and differences in structural brain asymmetries. In addition, learning-dependent asymmetric interactions between the left and right hemispheres shape lateralized brain functions.
Visualizing search results: evaluating an iconic visualization

Abstract:Commercial websites offer many items to potential site users. However, most current websites display results of a search in text lists, or as lists sorted on one or two single criteria. Finding the best item in a text list based on multi-priority criteria is an exhausting task, especially for long lists. Visualizing search results and enabling users to perceive the tradeoffs among the results based on multiple priorities may ease this process. To investigate this, two different techniques for displaying and sorting search results are studied in this paper; Text, and XY Iconic Visualization. The goal is to determine which technique for representing search results would be the most efficient one for a website user. We conducted a user study to compare the usability of the two techniques. Collected data is in the form of participants' task responses, a satisfaction questionnaire, qualitative observations, and participants' comments. According to the results, iconic visualization is better for overview (it gives a good overview in a short amount of time) and search with more than two criteria, while text-based performs better for displaying details.
A tale of two gradients: differences between the left and right hemispheres predict semantic cognition

Abstract:Abstract Decomposition of whole-brain functional connectivity patterns reveals a principal gradient that captures the separation of sensorimotor cortex from heteromodal regions in the default mode network (DMN). Functional homotopy is strongest in sensorimotor areas, and weakest in heteromodal cortices, suggesting there may be differences between the left and right hemispheres (LH/RH) in the principal gradient, especially towards its apex. This study characterised hemispheric differences in the position of large-scale cortical networks along the principal gradient, and their functional significance. We collected resting-state fMRI and semantic, working memory and non-verbal reasoning performance in 175 + healthy volunteers. We then extracted the principal gradient of connectivity for each participant, tested which networks showed significant hemispheric differences on the gradient, and regressed participants’ behavioural efficiency in tasks outside the scanner against interhemispheric gradient differences for each network. LH showed a higher overall principal gradient value, consistent with its role in heteromodal semantic cognition. One frontotemporal control subnetwork was linked to individual differences in semantic cognition: when it was nearer heteromodal DMN on the principal gradient in LH, participants showed more efficient semantic retrieval—and this network also showed a strong hemispheric difference in response to semantic demands but not working memory load in a separate study. In contrast, when a dorsal attention subnetwork was closer to the heteromodal end of the principal gradient in RH, participants showed better visual reasoning. Lateralization of function may reflect differences in connectivity between control and heteromodal regions in LH, and attention and visual regions in RH.

Abstract:The appeal of simple, sweeping portraits of large-scale brain mechanisms relevant to psychological phenomena competes with a rich, complex research base. As a prominent example, two views of frontal brain organization have emphasized dichotomous lateralization as a function of either emotional valence (positive/negative) or approach/avoidance motivation. Compelling findings support each. The literature has struggled to choose between them for three decades, without success. Both views are proving untenable as comprehensive models. Evidence of other frontal lateralizations, involving distinctions among dimensions of depression and anxiety, make a dichotomous view even more problematic. Recent evidence indicates that positive valence and approach motivation are associated with different areas in the left-hemisphere. Findings that appear contradictory at the level of frontal lobes as the units of analysis can be accommodated because hemodynamic and electromagnetic neuroimaging studies suggest considerable functional differentiation, in specialization and activation, of subregions of frontal cortex, including their connectivity to each other and to other regions. Such findings contribute to a more nuanced understanding of functional localization that accommodates aspects of multiple theoretical perspectives.

Abstract:Two groups of subjects were defined with a ‘Brain Preference Indicator’ questionnaire such that one group was classified as typically employing ‘left-brain’ functions while the other as typically employing ‘right-brain’ functions. All subjects were presented with verbal and spatial same/different judgment tasks which projected stimulus items to the left or right cerebral hemisphere and completed the Myers-Briggs (personality) Type Indicator. Significant Group x Task x Hemisphere interactions for both the reaction time and percent error data suggested that ‘left-’ and ‘right-brain’ individuals responded to the tasks in an opposite fashion. The pattern of effects was stable across subject sex and same/different judgments. Moreover, the corresponding scores from the personality inventory indicated that the two subject groups differed on fundamental personality attributes. Thus, while the ‘left-’ and ‘right-brain’ preference distinction did not predict a tendency to rely primarily on the processing capabilities of the respective hemisphere, the oppositional personality types composing the two groups were associated with the observed trends in hemisphericity. Implications for the role of individual differences in laterality studies are discussed.

Abstract:Recent large-scale neuroimaging studies suggest that most parts of the human brain show structural differences between the left and the right hemisphere. Such structural hemispheric asymmetries have been reported for both cortical and subcortical structures. Interestingly, many neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders have been associated with altered functional hemispheric asymmetries. However, findings concerning the relation between structural hemispheric asymmetries and disorders have largely been inconsistent, both within specific disorders as well as between disorders. In the present review, we compare structural asymmetries from a clinical neuroscience perspective across different disorders. We focus especially on recent large-scale neuroimaging studies, to concentrate on replicable effects. With the notable exception of major depressive disorder, all reviewed disorders were associated with distinct patterns of alterations in structural hemispheric asymmetries. While autism spectrum disorder was associated with altered structural hemispheric asymmetries in a broader range of brain areas, most other disorders were linked to more specific alterations in brain areas related to cognitive functions that have been associated with the symptomology of these disorders. The implications of these findings are highlighted in the context of transdiagnostic approaches to psychopathology.

Abstract:Abstract Studies of language organization show a striking change in cerebral dominance for language over development: We begin life with a left hemisphere (LH) bias for language processing, which is weaker than that in adults and which can be overcome if there is a LH injury. Over development this LH bias becomes stronger and can no longer be reversed. Prior work has shown that this change results from a significant reduction in the magnitude of language activation in right hemisphere (RH) regions in adults compared to children. Here we investigate whether the spatial distribution of language activation, albeit weaker in magnitude, still persists in homotopic RH regions of the mature brain. Children aged 4–13 (n = 39) and young adults (n = 14) completed an auditory sentence comprehension fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) task. To equate neural activity across the hemispheres, we applied fixed cutoffs for the number of active voxels that would be included in each hemisphere for each participant. To evaluate homotopicity, we generated left-right flipped versions of each activation map, calculated spatial overlap between the LH and RH activity in frontal and temporal regions, and tested for mean differences in the spatial overlap values between the age groups. We found that, in children as well as in adults, there was indeed a spatially intact shadow of language activity in the right frontal and temporal regions homotopic to the LH language regions. After a LH stroke in adulthood, recovering early-life activation in these regions might assist in enhancing recovery of language abilities.
Hemispheric asymmetries in borderline personality disorder: a systematic review

Abstract:Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by increased mood reactivity and affective instability. Since core structures involved in emotion processing, such as the amygdala, demonstrate strong lateralization, BPD is an interesting target for laterality research. So far, a systematic integration of findings on lateralization in BPD is missing. Therefore, we systematically reviewed studies published until February 2024 in PubMed, Web of Science, and PsycInfo databases that measured hemispheric asymmetries and behavioral lateralization in patients with BPD. Inclusion criteria were (a) diagnosis of BPD and (b) results on hemispheric or behavioral asymmetries. Specifically for neuroimaging studies, hemispheres need to be assessed separately. Review articles and studies with disorders other than BPD were excluded. Risk of bias was assessed with the Newcastle Ottawa Scale for non-randomized, non-comparative intervention studies. A total of 21 studies met the inclusion criteria. Thirteen studies investigated structural hemispheric asymmetries, five functional hemispheric asymmetries, two examined handedness, and one studied hemispheric asymmetry in visuospatial attention. Overall, studies examining structural asymmetries in BPD report bilateral volume reduction in the amygdala and hippocampus but a right-sided reduction in the orbitofrontal cortex. For functional lateralization, asymmetrical de/activation patterns in the default mode network in BPD and reduced right-frontal asymmetry were evident. Also, studies indicate a trend towards increased non-right-handedness in BPD. Risk factors for BPD, such as childhood abuse, may play a crucial role in the development of structural and functional alterations. However, the generalization of results may be limited by small sample sizes and varying study designs.

The Effects of Valence and Arousal on Hemispheric Asymmetry of Emotion

Abstract:The independent influence of valence and arousal on emotional hemispheric brain asymmetry was investigated to decide between three contrasting hypotheses: the right hemisphere hypothesis, the valence hypothesis, and the integrative hypothesis. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded while participants (N = 20) viewed positive high arousal, positive low arousal, negative high arousal, and negative low arousal pictures, following a baseline measure of ERPs while viewing gray squares. Self-ratings of emotional state in terms of valence and arousal were taken after each of the four emotion blocks. Valence and arousal effects on hemispheric asymmetry were analyzed for the time windows 130–170, 170–280, 280–450, and 450–600 ms. Right dominance on N2 during negative high arousal and left dominance on P3 and late positive potentials during negative low arousal were found over the frontal lobe. Right dominance on P2, P3, and late positive potentials over the parietal lobes appeared during high arousal. No frontal asymmetry was found in positive emotion. Our result partly supported the integrative hypothesis and did not provide evidence for the right hemisphere hypothesis or the valence hypothesis. These results suggested that arousal plays the main role in the ERPs’ hemispheric asymmetry.
Right hemisphere superiority for executive control of attention

Abstract:Abstract Over forty years have passed since the first evidence showing the unbalanced attentional allocation of humans across the two visual fields, and since then, a wealth of behavioral, neurophysiological, and clinical data increasingly showed a right hemisphere dominance for orienting of attention. However, inconsistent evidence exists regarding the right-hemisphere dominance for executive control of attention, possibly due to a lack of consideration of its dynamics with the alerting and orienting functions. In this study, we used a version of the Attentional Network Test with lateralized presentation of the stimuli to the left visual field (processed by the right hemisphere, RH) and right visual field (processed by the left hemisphere, LH) to examine visual field differences in executive control of attention under conditions of alerting or orienting. Analyses of behavioral performance (reaction time and error rate) showed a more efficient executive control (reduced conflict effect) in the RH compared to the LH for the reaction time, under conditions of increased alerting and of informative spatial orienting. These results demonstrate the right-hemisphere superiority for executive control, and that this effect depends on the activation of the alerting and orienting functions.
