Abstract:Physical demands of household carpet vacuuming and associated risks for musculoskeletal problems have received little attention although the level of muscle exertions is often assumed to be similar to that of occupational vacuuming. The aim of this study was to quantitatively assess the level of muscle activities of the upper extremity during carpeted floor vacuuming with household upright vacuum cleaners. Eighteen participants conducted four different carpet vacuuming tasks with two different cleaner models. Electromyography data from seven upper extremity muscles were collected. Median muscle activity ranged from 4.5% to 47.5% of the maximum voluntary contraction capacity for female participants and from 2.7% to 23.6% for male participants. Normalized muscle activity levels were significantly higher in women compared to men across tasks and muscle groups. Study results suggest that home vacuuming with upright vacuum cleaners is physically intensive work, especially for female users who are less physically capable.

Abstract:The muscular loads of the upper extremity and chest muscles were assessed during floor vacuuming with stick vacuum cleaners. Ten participants conducted vacuuming with two stick cleaners (weight: 3.03 kg, 3.56 kg) on tiled and carpeted floors while the myoelectric activity of the upper extremity and chest muscles were collected. The mean muscle activation levels ranged from 15.5% to 45.7% of the maximum voluntary capacity. Greater muscular loads were observed on the forearm and shoulder muscles when vacuuming with repeated curved strokes (vs. straight storkes), and on the chest muscle when vacuuming the carpeted floor. The range of muscular loads were higher than that of occupational tasks such as house painting and dental drilling, which have been known as intensive activities for upper extremities. The results suggest that floor vacuuming with stick vacuum cleaners is physically demanding for household consumers. Ergonomic interventions such as more user-friendly design should be considered.

Abstract:Janitorial services are an essential part to keep workplaces functional. Janitors consider the job labor intensive, and that workload is increasing in recent years. The most impacted body parts are hand/wrist, shoulder, and back in this population. This paper reports a compendium of physical ergonomics exposure assessment using three observational methods. The composite Strain Index (COSI) for hand/wrist, Manual Task Risk Assessment (ManTRA) for shoulder, and Recommended Cumulative Recovery Allowance (RCRA) for shoulder and back, were chosen for their capability to capture the complex and dynamic nature of all tasks performed in a janitorial job. Forty-six unique cleaning task-location-tool combinations received assessments, and the risk scores from the three methods are compiled into a compendium. This information can help practitioners to estimate the risk for a job, or designers to plan jobs for a team of janitors so the risks can be mitigated with careful task assignments.

[Risk assessment of biomechanical load for the upper limbs in housework]

Abstract:Background: There are few studies in the literature on work-related musculoskeletal disorders among housewives, also due to the difficulties encountered during risk assessment. Objectives: The aim of this study was evaluation of the biomechanical load for the upper limbs in housewives' tasks, using the different methods described in the literature. Methods: A questionnaire was submitted to 104 women (aged 25-60 years), 62 of whom were housewives only. Twelve subjects accepted to be filmed on video-cameras while working, which was necessary for risk evaluation. A number of tasks were chosen to be evaluated (loading the dishwasher, cleaning kitchen work surfaces, sweeping, cleaning floors, using the vacuum cleaner, dusting, cleaning the bathroom, ironing, making beds) because they were more frequently performed over a day or a week and because they involved specific physical risk factors. The preliminary analysis was based on the search for such risks, identification of "caution zone" housework, and subsequent evaluation by advanced level tools. Results: Biomechanical risk analysis showed that higher overloads were detected in ironing, cleaning floors and cleaning kitchen worktops but all housework analyzed in this study involved exposure to biomechanical risk when performed for four hours in a day. Conclusion: Housework involves exposure to several risk factors for the musculoskeletal system. Nevertheless, housewives are able to self-organise work and recovery times (even with the limits imposed by family demands) but their activities are characterised by repetitiveness and often by high hand/arm force associated with awkward postures.
Continuous Measurement of Muscle Fatigue Using Wearable Sensors During Light Manual Operations.

Abstract:Optimization of the temporal aspects of task design requires a better understanding of the development of muscle fatigue over time. The study was aimed to use wearable devices to continuously investigate muscle fatigue in the right forearm of 12 assembly workers. Indicators of fatigue were obtained through surface electromyography (sEMG) and ratings of perceived discomfort during daylong assembly tasks. Average EMG amplitude increased over the work day while median frequency decreased. Local perceived fatigue in the shoulder, upper arm, forearm and wrist increased over the course of the day. However, no clear relationship between perceived fatigue and objective indicators of fatigue was found. Using the wearable monitoring sensors, it is promising to improve worker-supervisor fatigue management in real time. This study might further help in the definition and justification of temporal interventions such as changing the length of the working day, adding extra pauses or task variation across time.

Abstract:Background: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) show a rapid growth trend. It has brought a huge economic burden to the society and become a serious occupational health problem that needs to be solved urgently. This study aimed to analyze the local muscle response under continuous ergonomic load, screen sensitive fatigue-related biomarkers and provide data support for the early prevention of local muscle damage and the exploration of early warning indicators. Methods: Thirteen male college student volunteers were recruited to perform simulated repetitive manual lifting tasks in the laboratory. The lifting task was designed for 4 periods which lasted for 12 min in each, and then paused for 3 min for sampling. Local muscle fatigue is assesed by the Rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and the Joint analysis of sEMG spectrum and amplitude (JASA). Elbow venous blood was collected and 14 kinds of biomarkers were analyzed, which included Metabolic markers Ammonia (AMM), Lactic acid (LAC), Creatine kinase (CK), Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), Cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP), C-telopeptide of collagen I and II (CTX-I, CTX-II) and Calcium ion (Ca2+); Oxidative stress marker Glutathione (GSH); Inflammatory markers C-reaction protein (CRP), Prostaglandin E2 (PG-E2), Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and Tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α); Pain marker Neuropeptide Y (NPY). Repeated measures analysis of variance (Repeated ANOVA), linear regression analysis, t-test and spearman correlation analysis were used to analyze the data. Results: Both subjective and objective fatigue appeared at the same period. Serum AMM, LAC, CK, LDH, COMP, CTX-II, Ca2+ and NPY after fatigue were significantly higher than those before fatigue (p < 0.05). There was a certain degree of correlation between the markers with statistical differences before and after fatigue. Conclusions: Metabolic markers (serum AMM, LAC, CK, LDH, COMP, CTX-II, Ca2+) and pain markers (serum NPY) can reflect local muscle fatigue to a certain extent in repetitive manual lifting tasks. It is necessary to further expand the research on fatigue-related biomarkers in different types of subjects and jobs in the future.

Abstract:Background and purpose: This was a descriptive and exploratory study of electromyographic (EMG) activity of wrist extensor musculature specific to the extensor digitorum (ED), extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) and flexor carpi radialis (FCR) in individuals with a medical diagnosis of the common work associated complaint of lateral epicondylitis (LE). The purpose was to evaluate and compare the EMG activity of the selected forearm muscles during three different types of resistive (strengthening) therapeutic exercises (rubber ball, theraputty, and "make-it-disappear" (MID) sponge) in participants with LE. Participants: Five individuals between the ages of 44 and 55 years of age diagnosed with lateral epicondylitis by a physician were recruited on a voluntary basis from a local outpatient clinic. Methods: The participants completed 1 min. of each of the resistive exercises, which were assigned randomly. Muscle activity was collected simultaneously by 3 surface electrodes (4/18/16 DE -2.3 silver surface EMG electrodes, Delsys Inc, Boston, MA) and recorded on an EMG Myomonitor-4 (Delsys Inc, Boston, MA) utilizing EmgCE software (Delsys Inc, Boston, MA). The raw EMG signal was converted to a root mean square (RMS) at each 0.0625 second interval during the full 60 second recording using EMGWorks, (Delsys, Inc, Boston, MA). The data were pooled, and the mean RMS was then determined as an overall measure of activity for each muscle during the 60 recording. Results: A 1-way ANOVA with Tukey's post-test was completed using Prizm Software (Graph Pad Software, Inc, San Diego, CA) for a comparison of the mean RMS values of each muscle during each activity. Statistically significant between group differences were noted for all muscles, among all exercises. Relative activity was noted to be greatest for ED and FCR during MID exercise, and for ECRB during putty exercise. Conclusion: All three exercises represent different patterns of muscle activity, for the muscles observed. The possible differences in the recorded activity may be consequent to the specific positioning and movement requirements involved in the performance of the distinct exercises. Practitioners may find the evidence of this study helpful in designing rehabilitation programs for those affected with lateral epicondylitis.

Abstract:Electrical line workers (ELWs) experience harsh environments, characterized by long shifts, remote operations, and potentially risky tasks. Wearables present an opportunity for unobtrusive monitoring of productivity and safety. A prerequisite to monitoring is the automated identification of the tasks being performed. Human activity recognition has been widely used for classification for activities of daily living. However, the literature is limited for electrical line maintenance/repair tasks due to task variety and complexity. We investigated how features can be engineered from a single wrist-worn accelerometer for the purpose of classifying ELW tasks. Specifically, three classifiers were investigated across three feature sets (time, frequency, and time-frequency) and two window lengths (4 and 10 seconds) to identify ten common ELW tasks. Based on data from 37 participants in a lab environment, two application scenarios were evaluated: (a) intra-subject, where individualized models were trained and deployed for each worker; and (b) inter-subject, where data was pooled to train a general model that can be deployed for new workers. Accuracies ≥ 93% were achieved for both scenarios, and increased to ≥96% with 10-second windows. Overall and class-specific feature importance were computed, and the impact of those features on the obtained predictions were explained. This work will contribute to the future risk mitigation of ELWs using wearables.

Abstract:Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess the postures that were commonly used in automobile chassis repair operations, and to evaluate shoulder girdle muscle fatigue for different combinations of the weight of hand-tools.Material and Methods: Two right muscles, including upper trapezius (UT) and middle deltoid (MD), were selected. Surface electromyography (SEMG) and a perceived level of discomfort (PLD) were used to assess the degree of shoulder girdle fatigue. Fifteen healthy young male subjects from the Northwestern Polytechnical University participated in the test. The test consisted of assuming 4 different postures and maintaining each of them for 60 s. The 4 postures varied in terms of dumbbell weights, standing for the hand-tools weight: W1 was 0.48 kg and W2 was 0.75 kg; the 4 shoulder postures were shoulder flexions of 150°, 120°, 90°, and 60°, combined with an included elbow angle of 180°, 150°, 120° and 90°, respectively. The experimental sequences were randomly selected. The signals of SEMG and the values of PLD in the shoulder girdle were recorded in 60 s. All subjects completed the whole test. The repeated measure analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed to ascertain differences between dumbbell weight (0.48 kg and 0.75 kg) and shoulder postures (150°/180°, 120°/150°, 90°/120° and 60°/90°). The Friedman test was utilized to determine the significant differences for UT(PLD) and MD(PLD) on shoulder postures. Spearman’s correlation was used to analyze the relationship between the subjective and objective measurements.Results: Significant correlational relationships existed between the UT percentage of the maximal voluntary electrical activation (%MVE) and UT(PLD) (r = 0.459, p < 0.01), between MD(%MVE) and MD(PLD) (r = 0.821, p < 0.01). The results showed that SEMG and PLD of the 4 postures under analysis differed significantly (p < 0.05).Conclusions: It was indicated that posture T4 (shoulder forward flexion 60° and included elbow angle 90°) resulted in the lowest fatigue, both in terms of the objective measure and the subjective perception, which meant that this posture was more ergonomic. The Relationship Between Ratings of Perceived Exertion (RPE) and Relative Strength for a Fatiguing Dynamic Upper Extremity Task: A Consideration of Multiple Cycles and Conditions.

Abstract:The goal of this study was to evaluate the relationship between ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) and relative strength with respect to baseline for a fatiguing free dynamic task targeting the upper extremity, namely simulated order picking, and determine whether the relationship remains the same for different conditions (i.e., pace and weight) and with fatigue. Fourteen participants (seven males, seven females) performed four sessions that included two 45-min work periods separated by 15 min of rest. The work periods involved picking weighted bottles from shoulder height and packaging them at waist height for four combinations of bottle mass and picking rate: 2.5 kg-15 bottles per minute (bpm), 2.5 kg-10 bpm, 2.5 kg-5 bpm, and 1.5 kg-15 bpm. Participants reported their RPEs every 5 min and performed a maximum isometric shoulder flexion exertion every 9 min. Pearson product-moment correlation was used to evaluate the linear relationship between RPE and relative strength for each subject and work period. Then, the effects of condition and work period on the average relationship were assessed using a repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). For the first 45-min period, there were no significantly different correlations between RPE and relative strength across conditions (average r = -0.62 (standard deviation = 0.38); p = 0.57). There was a significant decrease in average correlation for the second work period (r = -0.39 (0.53)). These results suggest that individual subjective responses consistently increase while relative strength declines when starting from a non-fatigued state. However, correlations are weaker when re-engaging in work following incomplete recovery. Thus, starting fatigue levels should be accounted for when considering the expected relationship between RPE and relative strength.
A Study on Posture Analysis of Assembly Line Workers in a Manufacturing Industry

Abstract:Objective: In order to reveal and analyze the feature of surface electromyography (sEMG) signal and assembler’s posture of repetitive work, assembler’s posture and electrical manifestations of localized muscles was collected by using the inertial motion capture technology and sEMG during the work. Methods: Six male workers were chosen in laser lettering workshop of a medical equipment manufacturing industry. They performed repetitive pull-and-push operation, meanwhile, sEMG and posture signal in 10 min period was collected at the beginning and end of work. Results: The MFs of LST, LBB and LFCR were significantly lower at the beginning than at the end of work, while the RMSs of LST, LBB and LFCR were significantly higher at the beginning than at the end of work. And the differences of LST between the beginning and the end of work was most distinct. Keeping fixed joint angle for a long time had a greater effect on muscle fatigue, and the result was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The fatigue strength of muscle increased significantly with repetitive push-and-pull operation of workers for a long time, especially of the shoulder; And fatigue was easily caused by keeping fixed joint angle for a long time.
Training Wrist Extensor Function and Detecting Unwanted Movement Strategies in an EMG-controlled Visuomotor Task.

Abstract:Stroke patients often suffer from severe upper limb paresis. Rehabilitation treatment typically targets motor impairments as early as possible, however, muscular contractions, particularly in the wrist and fingers, are often too weak to produce overt movements, making the initial phase of rehabilitation training difficult. Here we propose a new training tool whereby electromyographic (EMG) activity is measured in the wrist extensors and serves as a proxy of voluntary corticomotor drive. We used the Myo armband to develop a proportional EMG controller which allowed volunteers to perform a simple visuomotor task by modulating wrist extensor activity. In this preliminary study six healthy participants practiced the task for one session (144 trials), which resulted in a significant reduction of the average trial time required to move and hold a cursor in different target zones (p < 0.001, ANOVA), indicating skill learning. Additionally, we implemented an EMG based classifier to distinguish between the desired movement strategy and unwanted alternatives. Validation of the classifier indicated that accuracy for detecting rest, wrist extension and unwanted strategies was 92.5 + 6.9% (M + SD) across all participants. When performing the motor task the classification algorithm flagged 4.3 + 3.5% of the trials as 'unwanted strategies', even in healthy subjects. We also report initial feedback from a survey submitted to two chronic stroke patients to inquire about feasibility and acceptance of the general setup by patients.

Abstract:Sometimes the automation equipment cannot solve all the problems for industrial enterprises, and human workers cannot be replaced by machines in production activities. The possibility that the workers develop work-related musculoskeletal disorders, while performing high intensity and repetitive installation and commissioning work over a long period of time, is very high. A mechanical design of a passive upper extremities exoskeleton suit to reduce the muscles effort of upper limbs is proposed in this article. Thereby, a decrease in the work-related musculoskeletal disorders risk is expected. To evaluate the ergonomic contribution of the passive upper extremities exoskeleton suit, both static and dynamic tool lift experiments were designed, in which 10 volunteers were asked to participate in the experiments. The surface electromyography is captured from these volunteers to measure the magnitude of muscle output forces that are applied with and then without passive upper extremities exoskeleton suit assistance during the process of manual handling, and the tests are collected for comparison. Results show that there is a significant decrease in the output force and fatigue in deltoid, biceps brachii, and brachioradiali, especially in biceps brachial which is up to 67.8%. The implementation of passive upper extremities exoskeleton suit is not only a benefit to reduce workers’ upper extremities fatigue but also ultimately increase the work efficiency by minimizing work-related musculoskeletal disorders and safety accidents.

Abstract:Hand force data is critical in evaluating work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). Nevertheless, earlier studies on oil palm workers relied on estimated or laboratory measurements, which may not accurately reflect the actual hand forces. This study is the first report on the field measurement of hand forces for palm oil harvesters using a chisel and sickle to harvest low and tall palm trees, respectively. The dynamic hand forces and ground reaction forces were measured using instrumented harvesting tools and force plates, while wearable motion (IMU) and electromyography (EMG) sensors were incorporated for quantifying postural angles and muscle activations, respectively. Additionally, the spinal loadings, continuous Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) scores, and subjective pain scores were determined to evaluate the risk of WMSDs. A total of 10 harvesters were recruited to perform the palm pruning tasks using a chisel and sickle. Resultantly, the sickle and chisel recorded a maximum cutting force of 1601.23 ± 424.26 N and 420.80 ± 96.00 N, respectively. All pruning tasks were found to be highly risky to harvesters, with a peak REBA score of 12. Likewise, all investigated muscles were activated for over 40% MVC, thus inducing moderate pain in the muscles. The peak L5-S1 compression forces for all tasks exceeded the safety threshold (>3400 N), but the values were not significantly different. The shear force of the L5-S1 was extreme in pruning with a sickle (1446.10 ± 411.00 N) compared to using a chisel. In conclusion, palm harvesters were at a high risk of developing WMSDs following poor postures, high physical exertion and muscle activity, and excessive spinal loads.

Reduced variability of erector spinae activity in people with chronic low back pain when performing a functional 3D lifting task

Abstract:Background: Chronic low back pain (LBP) is a leading cause of disability, which is exacerbated in some by repeated lifting. Electromyography (EMG) assessments of isolated erector spinae (ES) regions during lifting identified conflicting results. Here, high-density EMG comprehensively assesses the lumbar and thoracolumbar ES activity in people with and without LBP performing a multiplanar lifting task. Methods: Four high-density EMG grids (two bilaterally) and reflective markers were affixed over the ES and trunk to record muscle activity and trunk kinematics respectively. The task involved cyclical lifting of a 5 kg box for ∼7 min from a central shelf to five peripheral shelves, returning to the first between movements, while monitoring perceived exertion. Results: Fourteen LBP (26.9 ± 11.1 years) and 15 control participants (32.1 ± 14.6 years) completed the study. LBP participants used a strategy characterised by less diffuse and more cranially-focussed ES activity (P < 0.05). LBP participants also exhibited less variation in ES activity distribution between sides during movements distal to the central shelf (P < 0.05). There were few consistent differences in kinematics, but LBP participants reported greater exertion (P < 0.05). Conclusion: In the presence of mild LBP, participants used a less variable motor strategy, with less diffuse and more cranially-focussed ES activity; this motor strategy occurred concomitantly with increased exertion while completing this dynamic task.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Work related Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) remain a significant work-Public Health concern globally, including among cleaning staff due to their high-risk tasks and often strenuous work conditions. This study assessed factors associated with work-related MSDs among cleaners in a public institution. Methodology A cross-sectional study of 320 informal cleaning staff employed on contract in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria was conducted. A semi-structured questionnaire with questions adapted from the Nordic musculoskeletal questionnaire was used to obtain Information on socio-demographics, work practices and prevalence/sites of MSD. Data were analyzed using the SPSS version 25 and p< 0.05 was considered significant. Results Majority (238; 74.4%) of respondents were aged 40-60 years and most (298; 93.1%) were females. Most respondents (280; 87.5%) earned < $40 monthly and 273 (85.3%) had worked for ≤ 10years. The commonly used PPE were hand gloves (89.7%) and nose mask while 98.1% and 99.4% of respondents have never used waterproof apron or safety goggles respectively. A majority (88.1%) worked 6-8 hours daily, with 99.1% in a bent position and 83.4% stood for >2hours at a time. In the past 7 days, common MSD-affected sites were lower back (35.9%), knees (23.1%), hips/thighs (15.9%), and right shoulder (15.6%). Significant factors associated with MSD included age >60 years, no formal education, lack of prior safety training and being overweight/obese. Conclusion The study highlighted a significant MSD burden among cleaning staff. We recommend that employers should implement interventions like ergonomics and safety training as well as regular health screenings to reduce MSD burden and promote cleaners’ well-being.

Abstract:Hotel room cleaners frequently report job-related pain, with high rates of work-related musculoskeletal disorder injuries established for this group of workers. Surprisingly, there is limited published research documenting the impact of interventions to reduce ergonomic-related injury risks specific to hotel room cleaners' job tasks. In this study focused on hotel bathroom-cleaning and furniture-dusting tasks, twelve experienced hotel room cleaners used their standard method and a risk-reduction method-a tool with a handle that could extend, to perform these tasks. The female study participants' average age was 45.3 (SD 8.7) years with an average of 10 years of work experience as cleaners (range: 0.8-26.0 years). Trunk kinematics and a low back injury risk assessment were measured using the Lumbar Motion Monitor. All study metrics were significantly reduced when cleaning tasks involved use of adjustable, long-handled tools (p < 0.05). This study demonstrated that commonly available cleaning and dusting tools with extendable handles can significantly reduce low back injury risk among hotel room cleaners and potentially reduce injury risk to other body parts known to be the site of musculoskeletal disorders in this workforce. The study findings suggest that cleaning or housekeeping jobs in other industries where these same tasks are performed could benefit from use of extended-handle tools like those investigated here.

Abstract:Pushing/Pulling tasks is an important part of work in many industries. Usually, most researchers study the Push/Pull tasks by analyzing different posture conditions, force requirements, velocity factors, etc. However few studies have reported the effects of fatigue. Fatigue caused by physical loading is one of the main reasons responsible for MusculoSkeletal Disorders (MSD). In this paper, muscle groups of articulation is considered and from joint level a new approach is proposed for muscle fatigue evaluation in the arms Push/Pull operations. The objective of this work is to predict the muscle fatigue situation in the Push/Pull tasks in order to reduce the probability of MSD problems for workers. A case study is presented to use this new approach for analyzing arm fatigue in Pushing/Pulling.

Abstract:Abstract This paper presents a dataset of high-density surface EMG signals (HD-sEMG) designed to study patterns of sEMG spatial distribution over upper limb muscles during voluntary isometric contractions. Twelve healthy subjects performed four different isometric tasks at different effort levels associated with movements of the forearm. Three 2-D electrode arrays were used for recording the myoelectric activity from five upper limb muscles: biceps brachii, triceps brachii, anconeus, brachioradialis, and pronator teres. Technical validation comprised a signals quality assessment from outlier detection algorithms based on supervised and non-supervised classification methods. About 6% of the total number of signals were identified as “bad” channels demonstrating the high quality of the recordings. In addition, spatial and intensity features of HD-sEMG maps for identification of effort type and level, have been formulated in the framework of this database, demonstrating better performance than the traditional time-domain features. The presented database can be used for pattern recognition and MUAP identification among other uses.

Abstract:We used an armband with embedded surface electromyography (sEMG) electrodes, together with machine-learning (ML) models, to automatically detect lifting-lowering activities and classify hand loads. Nine healthy participants (4 male and 5 female) completed simulated lifting-lowering tasks in various conditions and with two different hand loads (2.3 and 6.8 kg). We compared three sEMG signal feature sets (i.e., time, frequency, and a combination of both domains) and three ML classifiers (i.e., Random Forest, Support Vector Machine, and Logistic Regression). Both Random Forest and Support Vector Machine models, using either time-domain or time- and frequency-domain features, yielded the best performance in detecting lifts, with respective accuracies of 79.2% (start) and 86.7% (end). Similarly, both ML models yielded the highest accuracy (80.9%) in classifying the two hand loads, regardless of the sEMG features used, emphasizing the potential of sEMG armbands for assessing exposure and risks in occupational lifting tasks.
