Abstract:In band-like semiconductors, charge carriers form a thermal energy distribution rapidly after optical excitation. In hybrid perovskites, the cooling of such thermal carrier distributions occurs on timescales of about 300 fs via carrier-phonon scattering. However, the initial build-up of the thermal distribution proved difficult to resolve with pump–probe techniques due to the requirement of high resolution, both in time and pump energy. Here, we use two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy with sub-10 fs resolution to directly observe the carrier interactions that lead to a thermal carrier distribution. We find that thermalization occurs dominantly via carrier-carrier scattering under the investigated fluences and report the dependence of carrier scattering rates on excess energy and carrier density. We extract characteristic carrier thermalization times from below 10 to 85 fs. These values allow for mobilities of 500 cm2 V−1 s−1 at carrier densities lower than 2 × 1019 cm−3 and limit the time for carrier extraction in hot carrier solar cells.

Abstract:The behaviors of free charge carriers and the crucial factor of carrier diffusion length in perovskite films are intricately connected, with both time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy (TRTS) and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) being viable techniques for investigation. Yet, the consistency of the results these two methods provide regarding charge dynamics is still a matter of debate. In this study, we scrutinize the excited-state dynamics within MAPbI(3) films, which were fabricated through three distinct methods, under equivalent excitation conditions for both TRTS and TRPL analyses. Our research uncovers that films undergoing two-step annealing with Pb(SCN)(2) exhibit extended charge carrier lifetimes and lower rates of both first-order and second-order recombinations benefiting from the improved grain sizes. Across all samples, we note that the decay rates measured by TRPL are consistently faster than those recorded by TRTS. This discrepancy highlights the critical need to separate the behaviors of charge carriers from those of emissive bound states, which is essential for precisely assessing the fundamental dynamics of free charges and the diffusion lengths of carriers in perovskite films.
Dynamics of Photoinduced Charge Carriers in Metal-Halide Perovskites

Abstract:The measurement and description of the charge-carrier lifetime (tauc) is crucial for the wide-ranging applications of lead-halide perovskites. We present time-resolved microwave-detected photoconductivity decay (TRMCD) measurements and a detailed analysis of the possible recombination mechanisms including trap-assisted, radiative, and Auger recombination. We prove that performing injection-dependent measurement is crucial in identifying the recombination mechanism. We present temperature and injection level dependent measurements in CsPbBr_3, which is an inorganic lead-halide perovskite. In this material, we observe the dominance of charge-carrier trapping, which results in ultra-long charge-carrier lifetimes. Although charge trapping can limit the effectiveness of materials in photovoltaic applications, it also offers significant advantages for various alternative uses, including delayed and persistent photodetection, charge-trap memory, afterglow light-emitting diodes, quantum information storage, and photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Organo-metal halide perovskites have recently obtained world-wide attention as promising solar cell materials. They have broad and strong light absorption along with excellent carrier transport properties which partially explain their record power conversion efficiencies above 22%. However, the basic understanding of the underlying physical mechanisms is still limited and there remain large discrepancies among reported transport characteristics of perovskite materials. Notably, the carrier mobility of perovskite samples either in thin films or within solar cells obtained using different techniques can vary by up to 7-8 orders of magnitude. This tutorial review aims to offer insights into the scope, advantages, limitations and latest developments of the techniques that have been applied for studying charge carrier dynamics in perovskites. We summarize a comprehensive set of measurements including (1) time-resolved laser spectroscopies (transient absorption, time-resolved photoluminescence, terahertz spectroscopy and microwave conductivity); (2) electrical transient techniques (charge extraction by linearly increasing voltage and time-of-flight); and (3) steady-state methods (field-effect transistor, Hall effect and space charge limited current). Firstly, the basics of the above measurements are described. We then comparatively summarize the charge carrier characteristics of perovskite-based neat films, bilayer films and solar cells. Finally, we compare the different approaches in evaluating the key parameters of transport dynamics and unravel the reasons for the large discrepancies among these methods. We anticipate that this tutorial review will serve as the entry point for understanding the experimental results from the above techniques and provide insights into charge carrier dynamics in perovskite materials and devices.

Abstract:Halide perovskites have remarkable properties for relatively crudely processed semiconductors, including large optical absorption coefficients and long charge carrier lifetimes. Thanks to such properties, these materials are now competing with established technologies for use in cost-effective and efficient light harvesting and light emitting devices. Nevertheless, our fundamental understanding of the behaviour of charge carriers in these materials particularly on the nano to micro scale has on the whole lagged behind the empirical device performances. Such understanding is essential to control charge carriers, exploit new device structures, and push devices to their performance limits. Among other tools, optical microscopy and spectroscopic techniques have revealed rich information about charge carrier recombination and transport on important length scales. In this Progress Report, we detail the contribution of time-resolved optical microscopy techniques to our collective understanding of the photophysics of these materials. We discuss ongoing technical developments in the field that are overcoming traditional experimental limitations in order to visualise transport properties over multiple time and length scales. Finally, we propose strategies to combine optical microscopy with complementary techniques in order to obtain a holistic picture of local carrier photophysics in state of the art perovskite devices.

Deriving mobility-lifetime products in halide perovskite films from spectrally- and time-resolved photoluminescence

Abstract:Lead-halide perovskites are semiconductor materials with attractive properties for photovoltaic and other optoelectronic applications. However, determining crucial electronic material parameters, such as charge-carrier mobility and lifetime, is plagued by a wide range of reported values and inconsistencies caused by interpreting and reporting data originating from different measurement techniques. In this paper, we propose a method for the simultaneous determination of mobility and lifetime using only one technique: transient photoluminescence spectroscopy. By measuring and simulating the decay of the photoluminescence intensity and the redshift of the photoluminescence peak as a function of time after the laser pulse, we extract the mobility, lifetime, and diffusion length of halide perovskite films. With a voltage-dependent steady-state photoluminescence measurement on a cell, we relate the diffusion length to the external voltage and quantify its value at the maximum power point.

Abstract:Owing to their exceptional semiconducting properties, hybrid inorganic-organic perovskites show great promise as photovoltaic absorbers. In these materials, long-range diffusion of charge carriers allows for most of the photogenerated carriers to contribute to the photovoltaic efficiency. Here, time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) microscopy is used to directly probe ambipolar carrier diffusion and recombination kinetics in hybrid perovskites. This technique is applied to thin films of methylammonium lead tri-iodide MAPbI$_3$ obtained with two different fabrication routes, methylammonium lead tribromide (MAPbBr$_3$), and an alloy of formamidinium lead tri-iodide (FAPbI$_3$) and methylammonium lead bromide FA$_{0.85}$MA$_{0.15}$Pb(I$_{0.85}$Br_${0.15}$)$_3$. Average diffusion coefficients in the films leading to the highest device efficiencies and longest lifetimes, i.e., in FA$_{0.85}$MA$_{0.15}$Pb(I$_{0.85}$Br$_{0.15}$)$_3$ and acetonitrile-processed MAPbI$_3$, are found to be several orders of magnitude lower than in the other films. Further examination of the time-dependence shows strong evidence for non-diffusive transport. In particular, acetonitrile-processed MAPbI$_3$ shows distinct diffusion regimes on short and long timescales with an effective diffusion constant varying over 2 orders of magnitude. Our results also highlight the fact that increases in carrier lifetime in this class of materials are not necessarily concomitant with increased diffusion lengths and that the PL quantum efficiency under solar cell operating conditions is a greater indication of material, and ultimately device, quality.

Abstract:The unprecedented rise in power conversion efficiency of solar cells based on metal halide perovskites (MHPs) has led to enormous research effort to understand their photo-physical properties. In this paper, we review the progress in understanding the mobility and recombination of photo-generated charge carriers from nanosecond to microsecond time scales, monitored using electrodeless transient photoconductivity techniques. In addition, we present a kinetic model to obtain rate constants from transient data recorded using a wide range of laser intensities. For various MHPs the temperature dependence of the mobilities and recombination rates are evaluated. Furthermore, we show how these rate constants can be used to predict the upper limit for the open-circuit voltage Voc of the corresponding device. Finally, we discuss photo-physical properties of MHPs that are not yet fully understood, and make recommendations for future research directions.

Abstract:Carrier recombination at the interface between charge extraction layers and the perovskite photoactive layer in solar cells reduces the quasi-Fermi level splitting (QFLS) and hence the device’s open-circuit voltage (V OC). Distinguishing between interfacial carrier recombination and charge extraction requires selective probing of carrier dynamics with transient optical spectroscopy techniques. However, bulk recombination, interfacial recombination, and charge extraction all contribute to the transient response, making a precise determination of individual rates challenging. Here, we compare two commonly used hole transport layers (HTLs), namely, PTAA and NiO x , adjacent to prototypical MAPI3 perovskite photoactive layers and wide-bandgap perovskites. We demonstrate that combining time-resolved photoluminescence (TR-PL) and transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy measurements can reveal recombination losses associated with the perovskite/NiO x interface, as confirmed by drift-diffusion simulations. The best performing MAPI3/PTAA-based device exhibits less nonradiative recombination and more efficient charge extraction, facilitated by favorable energy level alignment.

Abstract:Carrier behavior in halide perovskite is a critical factor impacting on the properties of material, and finally determines the performance of perovskite photovoltaic and luminescent devices. It is necessary to clarify the mechanism of carrier relaxation and migration at extremely microscopic time scale. Time-resolved spectroscopy provides a powerful means for the detection of ultrafast processes, which has been an indispensable technique in research on perovskites. In this review, we will elaborate the basic principle and system implementation of time-resolved spectroscopy, and introduce the applications for carrier dynamics in perovskite.
Can we use time-resolved measurements to get Steady-State Transport data for Halide perovskites?

Abstract:Time-resolved, pulsed excitation methods are widely used to deduce optoelectronic properties of semiconductors, including now also Halide Perovskites (HaPs), especially transport properties. Howev-er, as yet no evaluation of their amenability and justification for the use of the results for the above-noted purposes has been reported. To check if we can learn from pulsed measurement results about steady-state phototransport properties, we show here that, although pulsed measurements can be useful to extract information on the recombination kinetics of HaPs, great care should be taken. One issue is that no changes in the material are induced during or as a result of the excitation, and another one concerns in how far pulsed excitation-derived data can be used to find relevant steady-state pa-rameters. To answer the latter question, we revisited pulsed excitation, and propose a novel way to compare between pulsed and steady state measurements at different excitation intensities. We per-formed steady-state photoconductivity and ambipolar diffusion length measurements, as well as pulsed TR-MC and TR-PL measurements as function of excitation intensity on the same samples of dif-ferent MAPbI3 thin films, and find good quasi-quantitative agreement between the results, explaining them with a generalized single level recombination model that describes the basic physics of photo-transport of HaP absorbers. Moreover, we find the first experimental manifestation of the boundaries between several effective recombination regimes that exist in HaPs, by analyzing their phototransport behavior as a function of excitation intensity.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites have emerged as a set of promising optoelectronic materials benefiting from their outstanding optoelectronic properties and unprecedented success in photovoltaics. Recent studies have suggested that mixing lower-dimensional A-site cations within perovskites helps mitigate this environmental and phase instability for 3D perovskites. However, the charge carrier transport properties in mixed 2D/3D perovskites are still not fully understood. In this work, charge carrier mobilities and recombination rate constants in perovskite thin films were analyzed with transient time-resolved microwave conductivity and time-resolved photoluminescence. It was found that upon large-cation treatment of 3D perovskites, charge carrier transport and radiative recombination efficiency were enhanced by the passivation of surface defects, which is evidenced by the decay dynamics of charge carriers.

Abstract:Abstract Charge carrier mobility is a fundamental property of semiconductor materials that governs many electronic device characteristics. For metal halide perovskites, a wide range of charge carrier mobilities have been reported using different techniques. Mobilities are often estimated via transient methods assuming an initial charge carrier population after pulsed photoexcitation and measurement of photoconductivity via non-contact or contact techniques. For nanosecond to millisecond transient methods, early-time recombination and exciton-to-free-carrier ratio hinder accurate determination of free-carrier population after photoexcitation. By considering both effects, we estimate long-range charge carrier mobilities over a wide range of photoexcitation densities via transient photoconductivity measurements. We determine long-range mobilities for FA 0.83 Cs 0.17 Pb(I 0.9 Br 0.1 ) 3 , (FA 0.83 MA 0.17 ) 0.95 Cs 0.05 Pb(I 0.9 Br 0.1 ) 3 and CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3-x Cl x polycrystalline films in the range of 0.3 to 6.7 cm 2 V −1 s −1 . We demonstrate how our data-processing technique can also reveal more precise mobility estimates from non-contact time-resolved microwave conductivity measurements. Importantly, our results indicate that the processing of polycrystalline films significantly affects their long-range mobility.

Abstract:<p>While transient photoluminescence (TPL) measurements are a very popular tool to monitor the charge‐carrier dynamics in the field of halide perovskite photovoltaics, interpretation of data obtained on multilayer samples is highly challenging due to the superposition of various effects that modulate the charge‐carrier concentration in the perovskite layer and thereby the measured photoluminescence (PL). These effects include bulk and interfacial recombination, charge transfer to electron‐ or hole transport layers, and capacitive charging or discharging. Here, numerical simulations with Sentauraus TCAD, analytical solutions, and experimental data with a dynamic range of <b>≈</b>7 orders of magnitude on a variety of different sample geometries, from perovskite films on glass to full devices, are combined to present an improved understanding of this method. A presentation of the decay time of the TPL decay that follows from taking the derivative of the photoluminescence at every time is proposed. Plotting this decay time as a function of the time‐dependent quasi‐Fermi‐level splitting enables distinguishing between the different contributions of radiative and non‐radiative recombination as well as charge extraction and capacitive effects to the decay.</p>

Inter-Domain Charge Transfer as a Rationale for Superior Photovoltaic Performances of Mixed Halide Lead Perovskites

Abstract:Organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites containing a mixture of iodide and bromide anions consistently perform better in donor-acceptor heterojunction solar cells than the standard methylammonium lead triiodide material. This observation is counterintuitive, as it is generally expected for photovoltaic materials that heterogeneities and compositional disorder cause reduced carrier diffusion length and conversion efficiency. Here, we combine ultrafast photoinduced electroabsorption and broadband fluorescence up-conversion spectroscopy measurements to scrutinize the carrier dynamics in mixed-cations, mixed-halide lead perovskite thin films. Our results evidence the formation of charge transfer excitons (CTE) across the boundaries of domains of various halide compositions. A global analysis of photoinduced transient Stark signals shows that CTE evolve gradually from Br-rich to I-rich domains over tens to hundreds of picoseconds. Rather than constituting recombination centres, boundaries between domains of various halide compositions appear then to favour charge carrier separation by driving photogenerated holes along channels of decreasing bromide content.

Towards elusive hybrid perovskite carrier dynamics through ultrafast THz spectroscopy: Influence of quantum confinement and charge transport layers

Abstract:Development of solar cells which are simultaneously cheap, stable, scalable, and highly efficient is crit. to realizing the vision of globally accessible renewable energy dependence. Over the past decade, hybrid org.-inorg. perovskite materials have experienced a meteoric rise in research efforts which continue to demonstrate the promise of perovskite technol. in all these areas. We still lack, however, a detailed understanding of the fundamental charge carrier dynamics and photogenerated charge transport behavior in these materials with respect to quantum confinement and solar cell interfaces. Ultrafast terahertz (THz, or far-IR) spectroscopy provides a time-resolved, non-invasive probe of the collective carrier dynamics and lattice vibrations in semiconductors, both from sub-bandgap and photoexcited absorption as well as from THz emission. We discuss comprehensive THz investigations in benchmark hybrid perovskite systems that will allow for the extn. of crucial material parameters such as carrier mobility, permittivity, photocond., and lattice-coupling to intimately assess the influence of 2D architectures and electron/hole transport layers. Characterization in this manner offers vital insights to guide the rapid development of perovskite solar cells and strengthens our foundational knowledge of hybrid perovskite materials. Furthermore, cohesively optimizing perovskite potential through diverse scientific frontiers is necessary to achieve the revolutionary energy technol. of our future.

Abstract:In time‐resolved photoluminescence experiments on perovskite solar cells are often used to infer steady‐state behavior, but the conditions under which transient and steady states are comparable are often unclear. Voltage‐dependent steady‐state photoluminescence measurements reveal differences between internal and external voltages, enabling calculations of effective recombination lifetimes relevant to real operating conditions. One of the key topics in perovskite solar cells is the reduction of charge carrier recombination, with the aim of increasing power conversion efficiency. The recombination lifetime is a commonly used tool, as it directly affects the current–voltage curve via the diffusion length. The lifetime is often estimated using time‐domain measurement methods such as time‐resolved photoluminescence. However, two obstacles emerge when applying the transiently measured decay times to the steady‐state theory. In general, the decay time depends on the charge carrier concentration, and it is often not clear under which conditions the transient measurement must be conducted to be comparable with the steady‐state performance of the device. Furthermore, diffusion and capacitive effects due to charge injection and extraction can influence transient techniques and cause the measured decay time to deviate from the sought‐after recombination lifetime. Voltage‐dependent steady‐state photoluminescence measurements can be used to estimate the internal voltage during device operation and allow the extraction of collection efficiencies and effective steady‐state decay times that are independent of transport and capacitive effects. Here, the differences between the steady‐state and transient decay times are identified and discussed, and the losses in the current–voltage curve caused by extraction issues are quantified.

Electrical Methods to Elucidate Charge Transport in Hybrid Perovskites Thin Films and Devices

Abstract:The panchromatic light absorption and excellent charge carrier transport properties in organo lead halide perovskites allowed to achieve an unprecedented power conversion efficiency in excess of 25 % for thin film photovoltaics fabrication. To understand the underlying phenomena, various comprehensive set of optical and electrical techniques have been employed to investigate the charge carrier dynamics in such devices. In this perspective, we aim to summarize the electrical transport properties of perovskite thin films by using (i) impedance spectroscopy (IS), (ii) space charge limited current (SCLC), (iii) field-effect transistors (FETs) and (iv) time-of-flight (TOF) methods. We have deliberated various equivalent circuit used to model the perovskite solar cells by means of IS. The SCLC technique provide vital electrical parameters such as mobility, activation energy, traps density and distribution, carrier concentration, density of states, etc. The TOF technique measures mobility as a primary parameter while the FETs configuration provide a valuable insight into the in-plane charge transport in perovskites thin films. We believe that these notable understanding will provide insights into charge carrier dynamics in perovskite materials and devices.
Pitfalls and prospects of optical spectroscopy to characterize perovskite-transport layer interfaces

Abstract:Perovskite photovoltaics has witnessed an unprecedented increase in power conversion efficiency over the last decade. The choice of transport layers, through which photo-generated electrons and holes are transported to the electrodes, is a crucial factor for further improving both the device performance and stability. In this perspective, we critically examine the application of optical spectroscopy to characterize the quality of the transport layer-perovskite interface. We highlight the power of complementary studies that use both continuous wave (cw) and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) to understand non-radiative losses, and additional transient spectroscopies for characterizing the potential for loss-less carrier extraction at the solar cell interfaces. Based on this discussion, we make recommendations on how to extrapolate results from optical measurements to assess the quality of a transport layer, and its impact on solar cell efficiency.
