Abstract:In this paper, a highly sensitive and integrated near-infrared CO2 sensor was developed based on quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS). Unlike traditional QEPAS, a novel pilot line manufactured quartz tuning fork (QTF) with a resonance frequency f 0 of 28 kHz was employed as an acoustic wave transducer. A near-infrared DFB laser diode emitting at 2004 nm was employed as the excitation light source for CO2 detection. An integrated near-infrared QEPAS module was designed and manufactured. The QTF, acoustic micro resonator (AmR), gas cell, and laser fiber are integrated, resulting in a super compact acoustic detection module (ADM). Compared to a traditional 32 kHz QTF, the QEPAS signal amplitude increased by > 2 times by the integrated QEPAS module based on a 28 kHz QTF. At atmospheric pressure, a 5.4 ppm detection limit at a CO2 absorption line of 4991.25 cm-1 was achieved with an integration time of 1 s. The long-term performance and stability of the CO2 sensor system were investigated using Allan variance analysis. Finally, the minimum detection limit (MDL) was improved to 0.7 ppm when the integration time was 125 s. A portable CO2 sensor system based on QEPAS was developed for 24 h continuous monitoring of CO2 in the greenhouse located in Guangzhou city. The CO2 concentration variations were clearly observed during day and night. Photosynthesis and respiration plants can be further researched by the portable CO2 sensor system.

Abstract:A high-precision low-cost mid-infrared photoacoustic sensor for greenhouse composite gases based on aspherical beam shaping is proposed and demonstrated. The assembled optical source module and luminous characteristics of infrared source are innovatively investigated and analyzed with aspherical beam shaping. The proposed aspherical-beam-shaping-technique could effectively reduce optical loss and enhance system sensitivity, achieving an effective power utilization ratio of a radiation source of 91% and sidewall noise ratio of 8.9%. Experiments verify the 1.7 times improvement in responsivity and 50% enhancement in minimum detection limit (MDL) on average. In terms of comprehensive greenhouse gas composites and with short integration time of 1 s, MDLs of CO2, CH4, N2O, NF3, SF6, PFC-14, and HFC-134a are 73 ppb, 267 ppb, 72 ppb, 81 ppb, 14 ppb, 9 ppb and 115 ppb, respectively. Furthermore, a 48 h continuous monitoring of H2O, CO2 and CH4 in the atmosphere is conducted and verifies the performance of the gas sensor. The developed sensor allows for the rapid route of low-cost and high-precision detection of multiple greenhouse gases.

Abstract:Greenhouse gases have a significant impact on general global climate change. A self-calibrated multiharmonic measurement system based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) with wavelength modulation spectroscopy, using the vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser, is developed and applied to measure the CO2 and H2O concentrations in the urban areas. The precision of the developed system is evaluated using the Allan variance method, and it is found that the multiharmonic can enhance the precision of the system and the first-to-third harmonics are sufficient to achieve the lowest Allan deviation. To validate its accuracy, comparison experiments with the commercial nondispersive infrared (NDIR) instrument (Li-Cor 840A) are performed and the results demonstrate the high accuracy of the TDLAS system and its consistency with the NDIR instrument. Measurements were carried out in autumn and winter of 2017 in the city center of Munich. The results indicate that the in situ measurement of the CO2 concentration in the downtown area correlates with both natural and anthropogenic activities. Due to its high precision and accuracy, the self-calibrated multiharmonic measurement system has a great potential to further study the emission and distribution of CO2 in the urban areas.

Abstract:To achieve high sensitivity detection of dual-component greenhouse gases carbon dioxide and methane simultaneously, a multimechanism synergistic enhanced all-optical photoacoustic spectroscopy gas analyzer is presented. The acoustic resonance of the photoacoustic cell and the mechanical resonance of a fiber-optic cantilever acoustic sensor are used to enhance the photoacoustic signals of the dual-component gas. The optimized multipass beam reflection structure enhances the effective excitation power of the dual-component gas. The highly sensitive detection of carbon dioxide and methane at dual-frequency operating points is realized by dual-channel laser modulation combined with dual-input digital lock-in amplification technology. The Allan-Werle deviation analysis results show that with a 100 s average time, the minimum detection limits of carbon dioxide and methane are 76.5 and 1.9 ppb, respectively. The corresponding normalized noise equivalent absorption (NNEA) coefficients are 3.1 × 10-10 and 2.9 × 10-10 cm-1 W/Hz1/2, respectively.

Abstract:Greenhouse gases (GHG) have negative impacts on the climate changes. Carbon dioxide (CO2), one of the dominant GHG, comes mainly from the anthropogenic emissions in urban areas. In this work, we develop a CO2 sensor based on TDLAS-WMS (tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy – wavelength modulation spectroscopy) to detect the daily CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. Firstly, the residual amplitude modulation (RAM) in the first harmonic is eliminated using the phasor decomposition method. Then, the multi-harmonic detection is employed to improve the precision of the sensor. It reveals that the precision can reach 0.02 ppm for CO2 measurement. The atmospheric CO2 measurement is conducted in urban area for a whole year. The results indicate that the anthropogenic activities can be observed in the diurnal CO2 cycles, especially in the wintertime. The developed sensor has a great potential for the air quality monitoring in urban areas.
[Open-path online monitoring of ambient atmospheric CO2 based on laser absorption spectrum]

Abstract:With the conjunction of tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy technology (TDLAS) and the open long optical path technology, the system designing scheme of CO2 on-line monitoring based on near infrared tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy technology was discussed in detail, and the instrument for large-range measurement was set up. By choosing the infrared absorption line of CO2 at 1.57 microm whose line strength is strong and suitable for measurement, the ambient atmospheric CO2 was measured continuously with a 30 s temporal resolution at an suburb site in the autumn of 2007. The diurnal atmospheric variations of CO2 and continuous monitoring results were presented. The results show that the variation in CO2 concentration has an obvious diurnal periodicity in suburb where the air is free of interference and contamination. The general characteristic of diurnal variation is that the concentration is low in the daytime and high at night, so it matches the photosynthesis trend. The instrument can detect gas concentration online with high resolution, high sensitivity, high precision, short response time and many other advantages, the monitoring requires no gas sampling, the calibration is easy, and the detection limit is about 4.2 x 10(-7). It has been proved that the system and measurement project are feasible, so it is an effective method for gas flux continuous online monitoring of large range in ecosystem based on TDLAS technology.

Abstract:The sick building syndrome (SBS) has been the subject of serious scientific inquiry only in the past 10 years. It is commonly accepted to represent eye, nose, and throat irritation; headaches, lethargy, difficulty concentrating, and sometimes dizziness; nausea, chest tightness; and other symptoms. Evidence suggests that what is called the SBS is at least three separate entities, each of which has at least one cause. This review will summarize the epidemiologic investigations of the SBS and present an overview of etiologic hypotheses.

Abstract:A photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) based carbon dioxide (CO2) sensor with a fixed wavelength quantum cascade laser (FW-QCL) was demonstrated. The emission wavelength of the FW-QCL at 4.42 μm in the mid-infrared spectral region matched a fundamental CO2 absorption line. Amplitude modulation of the laser intensity was used to match the resonant photoacoustic (PA) cell. The noise from the background was reduced with the correlation demodulation technique. The experimental results showed that the sensor had excellent signal stability and a concentration linear response. When the integration time was 1 s, a 1σ minimum detection limit (MDL) of 2.84 parts per million (ppm) for CO2 detection was achieved. The long-term stability of the sensor was evaluated by means of an Allan deviation analysis. With an integration time of ~100 s, the MDL was improved to 1 ppm. This sensor was also used to measure the CO2 concentration from some common emission sources, such as cigarette smoking, automobile exhaust, and the combustion of some carbon-containing materials, which confirmed the stability and robustness of the reported FW-QCL based CO2-PAS sensor system.

High-Sensitivity Gas Detection with Air-Lasing-Assisted Coherent Raman Spectroscopy

Abstract:Remote or standoff detection of greenhouse gases, air pollutants, and biological agents with innovative ultrafast laser technology attracts growing interests in recent years. Hybrid femtosecond/picosecond coherent Raman spectroscopy is considered as one of the most versatile techniques due to its great advantages in terms of detection sensitivity and chemical specificity. However, the simultaneous requirement for the femtosecond pump and the picosecond probe increases the complexity of optical system. Herein, we demonstrate that air lasing naturally created inside a filament can serve as an ideal light source to probe Raman coherence excited by the femtosecond pump, producing coherent Raman signal with molecular vibrational signatures. The combination of pulse self-compression effect and air lasing action during filamentation improves Raman excitation efficiency and greatly simplifies the experimental setup. The air-lasing-assisted Raman spectroscopy was applied to quantitatively detect greenhouse gases mixed in air, and it was found that the minimum detectable concentrations of CO 2 and SF 6 can reach 0.1% and 0.03%, respectively. The ingenious designs, especially the optimization of pump-seed delay and the choice of perpendicular polarization, ensure a high detection sensitivity and signal stability. Moreover, it is demonstrated that this method can be used for simultaneously measuring CO 2 and SF 6 gases and distinguishing 12 CO 2 and 13 CO 2 . The developed scheme provides a new route for high-sensitivity standoff detection and combustion diagnosis.

Abstract:Though in the last few decades only a few new drugs have come available for the treatment of spasticity, new insights may revise the role and individual value of several pharmacological treatments. Diazepam, baclofen and tizanidine are the most prescribed drugs for the treatment of spasticity. Intrathecal baclofen and local infiltration of botulin toxin are added values in selective patients. Gabapentin is a novelty, and the working mechanism of cannabis has been elucidated. Dantrolene sodium appears to owe its selectivity from the recently discovered ryanodine receptor, with a peripheral effect in muscles. In this review the pathophysiology and epidemiology of spasticity, pharmacology, clinical efficacy and unwanted effects of the different drugs for spasticity are updated.
Real-time measurements of atmospheric CO using a continuous-wave room temperature quantum cascade laser based spectrometer

Abstract:A compact, mobile mid-infrared laser spectrometer based on a thermoelectrically (TE) cooled continuous-wave room temperature quantum cascade laser and TE-cooled detectors has been newly developed to demonstrate the applicability of high sensitivity and high precision measurements of atmospheric CO. Performance of the instrument was examined with periodic measurements of reference sample and ambient air at 1 Hz sampling rate and a 1-hourly calibration cycle. The typical precision evaluated from replicate measurements of reference sample over the course of 66-h is 1.41 ppbv. With the utilization of wavelet filtering to improve the spectral SNR and minimize the dispersion of concentration values, a better precision of 0.88 ppbv and a lower detection limit of ~0.4 ppbv with sub-second averaging time have been achieved without reducing the fast temporal response. Allan variance analysis indicates a CO measurement precision of ~0.28 ppbv for optimal integration time of approximate 50 s. The absolute accuracy is limited by the calibration gas standard. This completely thermoelectrically cooled system shows the capability of long-term, unattended and continuous operation at room temperature without complicated cryogenic cooling.

Abstract:In this letter, a portable trace carbon dioxide (CO2) measurement instrument based on photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) was proposed and designed. The nonresonance PA cell (PAC) including a cooper tube with 251.2 μl was designed. Two condenser microphones were used to measure the PA signal simultaneously. The center wavelength of the distributed feedback laser was chosen to 2004 nm. Within 1 s integral time, the detection limit for CO2 reached 12.7 ppm. The normalized noise‐equivalent absorption coefficient was calculated to be 4.8468 × 10−9 cm−1W/Hz1/2. With Allan‐Werle deviation analysis, the measurement detection limit for CO2 improved to 4 ppm with 30 s integration time. As a result, the trace CO2 instrument based on PAS shows a good performance in long‐term detection.

Abstract:A photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS)-based carbon monoxide (CO) gas sensor with a high-power laser and an enhanced gas absorption was demonstrated. The light source was a distributed feedback (DFB), continuous wave (CW) diode laser with a high output power of ~8 mW to give a strong excitation. The target gas received optical absorption enhanced two times by using a right-angle prism reflecting the laser beam. In order to reduce the noise from the background, wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) and second-harmonic detection techniques were used. The modulation frequency and modulation depth were optimized theoretically and experimentally. Water vapor was added in the PAS sensor system to increase the vibrational–translational (V–T) relaxation rate of the CO molecule, which resulted in an ~8 times signal enhancement compared with the using of a dry CO/N2 gas mixture. The amplitude of the 2f signal had a 1.52-fold improvement compared to the one with only one time absorption. The experimental results showed that such a sensor had an excellent linear response to the optical power and gas concentration. At 1 s integration time, a minimum detection limit (MDL) for CO detection of 9.8 ppm was achieved. The long-term stability of the sensor system was evaluated with an Allan deviation analysis. When the integration time was 1100 s, the MDL improved to be 530 ppb. The detection performance of such a PAS-based CO sensor can be further improved when a laser with a higher output power and increasing optical absorption times is used.

Abstract:photothermal spectroscopy (QEPTS) technique is suitable for simultaneous measurement of multi-gas in near-infrared (NIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) bands with advantages of wide spectral response and high sensitivity. Here, we report a multi-gas sensing system based on QEPTS using NIR and MIR Lasers. A quartz tuning fork (QTF) with a resonant frequency f0 of 32.742 kHz was employed as a photothermal detector. A continuous wave distributed feedback (CW-DFB) fibercoupled diode laser with a center wavelength of 1.58 & mu;m and an interband cascade laser (ICL) with a center wavelength of 4.47 & mu;m were used as the light sources to simultaneously irradiate on different surfaces of QTF for scanning the absorption lines of carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O). A multi-pass cell with an effective optical path of 40 m and a 40 cm absorption cell were selected for the measurements of CO2 and NO2, respectively. The developed sensor was validated by the detection of mixtures containing 3000 ppm CO2 and 20 ppm N2O. The relationships between the second harmonic (2f) amplitude of the QEPTS signal and the CO2 and N2O concentrations were investigated. Allan deviation analysis showed that this sensor had excellent stability and high sensitivity with a minimum detection limit (MDL) of 2.729 ppm for CO2 in an integration time of 195 s and 0.038 ppb for N2O in an integration time of 90 s, respectively.
Portable TDLAS Sensor for Online Monitoring of CO2 and H2O Using a Miniaturized Multi-Pass Cell

Abstract:We designed a tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) sensor for the online monitoring of CO2 and H2O concentrations. It comprised a small self-design multi-pass cell, home-made laser drive circuits, and a data acquisition circuit. The optical and electrical parts and the gas circuit were integrated into a portable carrying case (height = 134 mm, length = 388 mm, and width = 290 mm). A TDLAS drive module (size: 90 mm × 45 mm) was designed to realize the function of laser current and temperature control with a temperature control accuracy of ±1.4 mK and a current control accuracy of ±0.5 μA, and signal acquisition and demodulation. The weight and power consumption of the TDLAS system were only 5 kg and 10 W, respectively. Distributed feedback lasers (2004 nm and 1392 nm) were employed to target CO2 and H2O absorption lines, respectively. According to Allan analysis, the detection limits of CO2 and H2O were 0.13 ppm and 3.7 ppm at an average time of 18 s and 35 s, respectively. The system response time was approximately 10 s. Sensor performance was verified by measuring atmospheric CO2 and H2O concentrations for 240 h. Experimental results were compared with those obtained using a commercial instrument LI-7500, which uses non-dispersive infrared technology. Measurements of the developed gas analyzer were in good agreement with those of the commercial instrument, and its accuracy was comparable. Therefore, the TDLAS sensor has strong application prospects in atmospheric CO2 and H2O concentration detection and ecological soil flux monitoring.

Abstract:The precise detection of volatile organic compounds plays a pivotal role in addressing environmental concerns, industrial safety, and medical diagnostics. The accurate identification and quantification of these compounds because of their ubiquity and potential health hazards has fueled the development of advanced sensing technologies. This work presents a sensing system in the realm of long-wavelength infrared spectroscopy for achieving enhanced selectivity and sensitivity of benzene, toluene, and propane detection through quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy. High-resolution gas spectroscopy is made possible by the use of specially designed InAs/AlSb-based quantum cascade lasers, emitting in the wavelength range 13–15 μm, and quartz tuning forks. The sensor system, characterized by its robustness and precision, demonstrates exceptional capabilities in benzene, toluene, and propane detection. The system's capacity for practical applications in environmental monitoring and medical diagnostics is demonstrated by its ability to distinguish these volatile organic compounds with a minimum detection limit of 113 ppb, 3 ppb, and 3 ppm for toluene, benzene, and propane at an integration time of 10 s, even in complex gas matrices. This work advances gas sensing technology while also offering insightful information on spectral interferences, a persistent problem in the field. The results usher in a new era of sophisticated and reliable gas sensing techniques meeting the growing demand for precise volatile organic compounds detectors for environmental monitoring purposes.

Abstract:Methane (CH 4 ) is a greenhouse gas as well as being flammable and explosive. In this manuscript, quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) and heterodyne QEPAS (H-QEPAS) exploring a self-designed quartz tuning fork (QTF) with resonance frequency ( f 0 ) of ~8.7 kHz was utilized to achieve sensitive CH 4 detection. Compared with the standard commercial 32.768 kHz QTF, this self-designed QTF with a low f 0 and large prong gap has the merits of large energy accumulation time and low optical noise. The strongest line located at 6057.08 cm −1 in the 2 v 3 overtone band of CH 4 was chosen as the target absorption line. A diode laser with a high output power of > 30 mW was utilized as the excitation source. Acoustic micro-resonators (AmRs) were added to the sensor architecture to amplify the intensity of acoustic waves. Compared to the bare QTF, after the addition of AmRs, a signal enhancement of 149-fold and 165-fold were obtained for QEPAS and H-QEPAS systems, respectively. The corresponding minimum detection limits (MDLs) were 711 ppb and 1.06 ppm for QEPAS and H-QEPAS sensors. Furthermore, based on Allan variance analysis the MDLs can be improved to 19 ppb and 27 ppb correspondingly. Compared to the QEPAS sensor, the H-QEPAS sensor shows significantly shorter measurement timeframes, allowing for measuring the gas concentration quickly while simultaneously obtaining f 0 of QTF.
