Abstract:This study monitored 20 organophosphate esters (OPEs) in water and sediment from three typical mariculture bases (Yunxi Marine Ranching (YX), Hangzhou Bay (HZB), and Zhelin Bay (ZLB)) and Meiliang Bay (MLB) of Taihu Lake in China, focusing on the spatial distribution and sources of OPEs. Moreover, the occurrence and risk of OPEs in fishes from ZLB were evaluated. The ∑OPE concentrations in waters followed the order MLB (591 ng/L) > YX (102 ng/L) > HZB (70.0 ng/L) > ZLB (37.4 ng/L), with tri(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCIPP), triethyl phosphate (TEP), and tri(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) being the dominant OPEs. Significantly higher ∑OPE concentrations were found in sediment in MLB compared to the other three areas with similar levels. The decreasing concentrations of OPEs from nearshore to offshore areas in HZB and MLB indicated that terrigenous input is the main source of OPEs. The even distribution of OPEs in YX and ZLB combined with PCA analysis suggested ship traffic or aquaculture activities are also potential sources. The ∑OPE concentrations in fishes ranged from 0.551-2.45 ng/g wet weight, with TCIPP, tri-phenyl phosphate (TPHP), and TCEP being the main OPEs. Hydrophobicity was a key factor affecting the sediment-water distribution coefficients and the bioaccumulation factors of OPEs. The human exposure to OPEs through consumption of fishes from ZLB had a low health risk.

Abstract:In this study, water and sediment samples from the Jiaozhou Bay and surrounding rivers were collected to analyze the seasonal occurrence and allocation of 12 organophosphate esters (OPEs) and the associated ecological risk. The higher contamination of OPEs in the adjacent rivers indicated the impact of terrestrial input. Tris(1-chloropropan-2-yl) phosphate (TCIPP) was the predominant OPE in the four environmental sample groups investigated. The spatial distribution of OPEs in seawater varied greatly seasonally and was mainly affected by terrestrial input, with OPEs being redistributed under the influence of tidal currents. The partition coefficients (log Koc) of the OPEs were calculated, and their strong correlation with the log Kow (octanol-water) values suggested that the water-sediment allocation was significantly affected by hydrophobicity. The homologous relationships among the 7 OPEs with detection frequencies greater than 40% were identified by principal component analysis (PCA). The partial least squares regression (PLSR) model explicated that ∑OPEs cycling dynamics and principal controlling factors were dissimilar in the bay versus surrounding rivers. The risk quotient (RQ) faced by typical organisms in seawater and river water indicated that short-term OPEs exposure was safe for green algae, daphnia and fish. The organisms in rivers faced the higher ecological risk of OPEs in spring than in summer and winter. Therefore, the terrestrial transport of OPEs in spring should be controlled.

Abstract:Aiming to explore the spatiotemporal occurrence of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in the aquatic environment of Taihu Lake and to assess the relevant ecological risk, monomeric and oligomeric OPEs in the surface water and sediment of Taihu Lake were determined using solid phase extraction and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The target monomeric OPEs included chlorinated OPEs, alkyl OPEs, and aryl OPEs. There was no significant difference in the spatial distribution of OPEs in water and sediment between the pollutant-impacted and less-impacted zones. The average concentrations of OPEs in summer and winter were, respectively, 752.7 and 498.5 ng·L-1 in water and 124.0 and 54.5 ng·g-1 in sediment, indicating an obvious seasonal difference, especially for the monomeric OPEs. The OPEs levels in both the water and sediment were ranked in the order of chlorinated OPEs > alkyl OPEs > aryl OPEs≈oligomeric OPEs. The pseudo-partitioning coefficients (Kd) of OPEs between the sediment and surface water of Taihu Lake were much higher in summer (0.05-4.17 L·g-1) compared to those in winter (0.02-3.47 L·g-1) and were significantly positively correlated with the lg Kow values of OPEs. Based on the median concentrations of OPEs in the water of Taihu Lake, the ecological risk of OPEs was assessed by risk quotient (RQ) values, which indicated a medium risk at an RQ level of 0.34 during winter and 0.35 during summer. The assessment results showed that the risk ranking of OPEs was consistent with that of their concentrations, and the monomeric OPEs posed a higher ecological risk in summer compared to that in winter. Although the ecological risk of oligomeric OPEs in this study was not serious and was lower than that of monomeric OPEs, it is an urgent requirement to conduct ecotoxicology studies on oligomeric OPEs in the future since available data is highly limited at present.
Exploring source footprint of Organophosphate esters in the Bohai Sea, China: Insight from temporal and spatial variabilities in the atmosphere from June 2014 to May 2019

Abstract:Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are still produced and used in large quantities in the world-wide, and the environmental burden and behavior have generated widespread concern, especially in some large-scale waterbodies. This study conducted a comprehensive assessment on the temporal and spatial variabilities and budget of OPEs to trace the source for the Bohai Sea (BS), based on a 5-year seasonal monitoring campaign (June 2014 to May 2019) of 12 atmospheric sites around the BS and our previous studies. The average concentration of Σ10OPEs in atmosphere during the sampling period was 7.65 ± 6.42 ng m-3, and chlorinated OPEs were the major compounds. The Seasonal-Trend decomposition procedure based on Loess (STL) analyzed that during the 5-year sampling period, the atmospheric concentrations of Σ10OPEs had a slightly increasing trend with a rate of + 0.092 ng m-3 yr-1, and the seasonal concentrations had a distinct seasonal distribution. The highest concentration of Σ10OPEs was observed at the sampling site of Dalian, followed by Tianjin, Yantai, and Beihuangcheng. The estimation of the fugacity ratios and air-water gas exchange fluxes established that the concentration levels of two major components of chlorinated OPEs (tris-(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) and tris-(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP)) in the atmosphere were dominated by their volatilization from BS's seawater (1.24 ± 0.46 t yr-1 for TCEP and 5.15 ± 2.15 t yr-1 for TCPP), with 73% deriving from the coastal seawater. The budget assessment suggested that the volatile fluxes of TCEP and TCPP accounted for 8% and 29% of their storages (15.6 ± 5.32 t for TCEP and 17.6 ± 6.70 t for TCPP) in the BS seawater, which were mainly contributed by continental river input (20% for TCEP and 42% for TCPP). The efforts indicated that river inputs of TCEP and TCPP needed to be paid more attention for the improvement of environmental quality of the BS.

Abstract:Organophosphate esters (OPEs), as re-emerging contaminants considered to be a potential health concern, are ubiquitous in the environment and have been widely investigated. However, little is known on the safe OPE concentrations in the water quality criteria for the protection of the aquatic environment, which is an indispensable part of environmental management. In the present study, aquatic acute and chronic predicted no-effect concentrations (PNECs) of six frequently detected OPEs were derived from the hazardous concentrations for 5% of species (HC5s), respectively. The acute PNECs for the selected OPEs ranged from 17.70 to 3562 μg/L, while the chronic PNECs ranged from 4.6 × 10−4 to 61.85 μg/L. Among these OPEs, tricresyl phosphate (TCrP) exhibited the lowest acute PNEC, while tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCPP) presented chronic PNEC, which indicated that it has a higher toxicity effect on the aquatic environment. Furthermore, the aquatic ecological risks of individual OPEs (except for TDCPP) were deemed to be relatively low in Chinese surface water; however, the aquatic ecological risks of TDCPP and ΣOPEs indicated that they have potential adverse effects and should be considered as a potential health concern. The probability of 5% of aquatic organisms being affected by ΣOPEs was in the range of 0.21 to 17.39% based on the joint probability curve method.

Abstract:Organophosphate esters (OPEs), as an important class of new pollutants, have been pervasively detected in global aquatic products, arousing widespread public concern due to their potential bioaccumulative behavior and consequent risks. With the continuous improvement of living standards of citizens, there have been constant increment of the proportion of aquatic products in diets of people. The levels of OPEs exposed to residents may also be rising due to the augmented consumption of aquatic products, posing potential hazards on human health, especially for people in coastal areas. The present study integrated the concentrations, profiles, bioaccumulation, and trophic transfer of OPEs in global aquatic products, including Mollusca, Crustacea, and fish, evaluated health risks of OPEs through aquatic products in daily diets by Mont Carol Simulation (MCS), and found Asia has been the most polluted area in terms of the concentration of OPEs in aquatic products, and would have been increasingly polluted. Among all studied OPEs, chlorinated OPEs generally showed accumulation predominance. It is worth noting that some OPEs were found bioaccumulated and/or biomagnified in aquatic ecosystems. Though MCS revealed relative low exposure risks of residents, sensitive and special groups such as children, adolescents, and fishermen may face more serious health risks than the average residents. Finally, knowledge gaps and recommendations for future research are discussed encouraging more long-term and systematic global monitoring, comprehensive studies of novel OPEs and OPEs metabolites, and more toxicological studies to completely evaluate the potential risks of OPEs.

Abstract:Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are extensively used as flame retardants and plasticizers in China; however, their potential carcinogenicity causes great concern. To date, their environmental distribution in water samples from the lower Yangtze River Basin still remains uncharacterized. This study systematically investigated the occurrence and spatial distribution of 13 OPEs, as well as their associated potential risks, in water samples from the lower Yangtze River and its 88 major inflowing rivers. The total OPE (ΣOPE) concentrations ranged from 55.6 to 5071 ng/L, with a median of 144 ng/L. Among them, halogenated OPEs were the dominant group with an average of 61.6%, and tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (12.6–450 ng/L, median: 53.38 ng/L) and tris(2-choroethyl) phosphate (11.0–1202 ng/L, median: 36.4 ng/L) were the most abundant OPEs. Significantly different concentrations were found with spatial variations (p < 0.01), and were higher in southern cities than in northern cities of the lower Yangtze River Basin. Principal component analysis with multiple linear regression and Spearman correlations showed that the main sources were likely emission of vehicular and marine traffic. Ecological risk analysis showed that the risk quotient (RQ) values of samples remained below 1, but the percentage of 0.1 < RQ ≤ 1 was 26.9%, indicating a medium risk of OPEs in water samples. Moreover, ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate predominantly contributed to the ecological risk, accounting for >89.2% of the total ecological risk of ΣOPEs. However, the total non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of ΣOPEs were negligible at the detected concentrations, even in a high exposure scenario. The risks from major inflowing rivers of the lower Yangtze River were almost one order of magnitude higher than those of the mainstream lower Yangtze River.

Abstract:Organophosphate esters (OPEs), substitutes of polybrominated diphenyl ethers, have been found in a variety of marine environmental matrices, whereas little is known about the feature and sources of seawater OPEs from the environments simultaneously affected by multiple anthropogenic activities. Jiaozhou Bay is one typical bay heavily disturbed by human activities, which was semi-enclosed and surrounded by large amounts of discharged rivers and catchments, various types of ports, and aquaculture farms. This study found that concentrations of Σ 13 OPEs ranged from 23.90 to 366.40 ng/L (median: 37.76 ng/L) in the seawater and from 90.15 to 1183.14 ng/L (median: 940.61 ng/L) in the inflowing river water. Tris (2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate, triethyl phosphate, and tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate were the predominant congener, with the percentage of 43.76%, 22.80%, and 14.01%, respectively, in the bay water and 52.47%, 11.31%, and 23.66% in the river water. The overall spatial distribution was characterized by a higher concentration of Σ 13 OPEs and halogenated-OPEs in the nearshore sites and in the inflowing rivers, which were surrounded by urbanized areas with dense anthropogenic activities, especially along the eastern coast. Effluent discharge and vehicular and marine traffic emissions were distinguished as two main plausible sources of OPEs to Jiaozhou Bay, based on the principal component analysis and Spearman correlations. Ecological risk analysis indicated that Σ 13 OPEs posed a low risk to aquatic organisms in the bay and low-to-medium risks in the inflowing rivers.

Abstract:Limited information is available on the spatiotemporal occurrence and ecological risks of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in coastal environments. 175 water samples were collected in Laizhou Bay (LZB) and its rivers and estuaries during spring and summer for the determination of 12 targeted OPEs. Total concentration of OPEs ranged from 234.4 to 2892.1 ng L−1 in the river and estuarine water and 87.6 to 969.4 ng L−1 in the bay water, with medians of 1015.8 and 296.8 ng L−1, respectively, showing that riverine inputs were the major sources of OPEs in the bay. Tris (2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCIPP) and triethyl phosphate (TEP) were the most abundant OPEs, with median contributions of 47% and 36% in the bay water, respectively. The total concentration of OPEs was higher in the estuarine area of the Yellow River and the southwestern coast of the LZB under the influence of riverine OPE inputs and ocean currents. In addition, the concentrations of dominant OPE species were significantly higher in the surface water than in the bottom water. The concentrations of dominant OPE species were found to be significantly lower in summer than in spring, mainly due to both precipitation and seawater dilution effects. However, the concentrations of three minor OPE species were significantly higher in summer than in spring, probably because of their high usage in summer. TCIPP and TEP concentrations were significantly negatively correlated with salinity. The targeted OPEs posed low ecological risk in the bay and moderate ecological risk in the rivers and estuaries, which was mostly ascribed to the toxicity of tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) and resorcinol-bis (diphenyl) phosphate (RDP) to algae. Priority should be given to TCIPP, TEP, TCEP, and RDP in the LZB due to their high concentrations and/or toxicity.

Abstract:The production and use of organophosphate esters (OPEs) as substitutes for traditional halogenated flame retardants is increasing, resulting in greater global concern related to their ecological risks to marine environments. In this study, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and OPEs, representing traditional halogenated and emerging flame retardants, respectively, were studied in multiple environmental matrices in the Beibu Gulf, a typical semi-closed bay in the South China Sea. We investigated the differences in PCB and OPE distributions, sources, risks, and bioremediation potentials. Overall, the concentrations of emerging OPEs were much higher than those of PCBs in both seawater and sediment samples. Sediment samples from the inner bay and bay mouth areas (L sites) accumulated more PCBs, with penta- and hexa-CBs as major homologs. Chlorinated OPEs were prevalent in both seawater and sediment samples from the L sites, whereas tri-phenyl phosphate (TPHP) and tri-n-butyl phosphate (TNBP) were predominant at the outer bay (B sites) sediment samples. Source identification via principal component analysis, land use regression statistics, and δ13C analysis indicate that PCBs were mainly sourced from the atmospheric deposition of sugarcane and waste incineration, whereas sewage inputs, aquaculture, and shipping activity were identified as sources of OPE pollution in the Beibu Gulf. A half-year sediment anaerobic culturing experiment was performed for PCBs and OPEs, and the results only exhibited satisfactory dechlorination for PCBs. However, compared with the low ecological risks of PCBs to marine organisms, OPEs (particularly trichloroethyl phosphate (TCEP) and TPHP) exhibited low to medium threats to algae and crustaceans at most sites. Given their increasing usage, high ecological risks, and low bioremediation potential in enrichment cultures, pollution by emerging OPEs warrants close attention.

Abstract:Since the production of brominated flame retardants has been gradually phased out, organophosphate esters (OPEs) are increasingly used as the substitutes. Given their toxicity and water solubility, OPEs may jeopardize the aquatic environment and organisms. Here, we examined the concentration, composition, and biological risk of OPEs in the water collected from the eight major waterways in the Pearl River Delta, a highly industrialized region in China. We found a widespread occurrence of OPEs in this region (∑9OPEs: 134 to 442 ng L-1), dominated by TCPP, TCEP, and TnBP. Halogenated OPEs were dominant over alkyl and aromatic OPEs. The biological risk of OPEs, mainly contributed by TPhP and TnBP, was low (RQ < 0.1). The contamination level of OPEs in the Pearl River Delta was likely associated with the degree of industrial activities. Although OPEs posed low risk to aquatic organisms, more attention should be paid to some OPEs in the future, such as TnBP, due to the high usage and toxicity. Considering the concentrations of OPEs worldwide and their usage, OPEs may become the emerging pollutants of global concern in the next decade.
Spatial heterogeneity, sediment-water exchange, and diffusion mechanisms of organophosphate esters from river to coastal aquatic system in a typical economic circle of northern China

Abstract:Organophosphate esters (OPEs) have proven to be pervasive in aquatic environments globally. However, understanding their partitioning behavior and mechanisms at the sediment-water interface remains limited. This study elucidated the spatial heterogeneity, interfacial exchange, and diffusion mechanisms of 14 OPEs (∑14OPEs) from river to coastal aquatic system. The transport tendencies of OPEs at the sediment-water interface were quantitatively assessed using fugacity methods. The total ∑14OPEs concentrations in water and sediments ranged from 154 ng/L to 528 ng/L and 2.41 ng/g dry weight (dw) to 230 ng/g dw, respectively. This result indicated a descending spatial tendency with moderate variability. OPE distribution was primarily influenced by temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen levels. As the carbon atom number increased, alkyl and chlorinated OPEs transitioned from diffusion towards the aqueous phase to equilibrium. In contrast, aryl OPEs and triphenylphosphine oxide, which had equivalent carbon atom counts, maintained equilibrium throughout. Diffusion trends of individual OPE congener at the sediment-water interface varied at the same total organic carbon contents (foc). As the foc increased, the fugacity fraction values for all OPE homologs showed a declining trend. The distinct molecular structure of each OPE monomer might lead to unique diffusive behaviors at the sediment-water interface. Higher soot carbon content had a more pronounced effect on the distribution patterns of OPEs. The sediment-water distribution of OPEs was primarily influenced by total organic carbon, sediment particle size, dry density, and moisture content. OPEs displayed the highest sensitivity to fluctuations in ammonium and dissolved organic carbon. This study holds significant scientific and theoretical implications for elucidating the interfacial transport and driving forces of OPEs and comprehending their fate and endogenous release in aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract:Organophosphate esters (OPEs) have been a class of emerging environmental contaminants. However, studies on their environmental behavior, specifically their adsorption-desorption behavior between sediment and seawater in estuarine and coastal areas, remain limited. To address this gap, our study focused on investigating the levels and behavior of 11 OPEs in sediment samples collected from the Beibu Gulf, South China Sea, encompassing estuaries and coastal regions. The total concentrations of 11 OPEs (Σ 11 OPEs) in the sediments exhibit a significant decrease in summer, both in seagoing rivers (4.67 ± 2.74 ng/g dw) and the coastal zone (5.11 ± 3.71 ng/g dw), compared to winter levels in seagoing rivers (8.26 ± 4.70 ng/g dw) and the coastal zone (7.71 ± 3.83 ng/g dw). Chlorinated OPEs dominated the sediments, constituting 63 %–76 % of the total. Particularly, port and mariculture areas showed the highest levels of OPEs. Through load estimation analysis, it was revealed that the sedimentary OPEs in Qinzhou Bay (221 ± 128 kg) had the highest load, with input from the Qin River identified as a significant source. Chlorinated OPEs showed a trend of desorption from sediments to the water column with increasing salinity, emphasizing the crucial role of land-based OPEs input through suspended particulate matter in rivers as a pathway to the ocean. The impact of strong flow in estuarine environments was highlighted, as it can scour sediments, generate suspended sediments , and release OPEs into the water bodies. Additionally, the results of the ecological risk assessment indicated that most of the OPEs posed low-risk levels. However, attention is warranted for the contamination levels of some chlorinated OPEs, emphasizing the need for ongoing monitoring and assessment.

Abstract:Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are alternatives to polybrominated diphenyl ethers, often used as flame-retardants and plasticizers. There are few reports of OPEs in river water. This study focused on the occurrence and spatial distribution of 11 OPE congeners and one synthetic intermediate triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO) in 40 major rivers entering into the Bohai Sea. Total OPEs ranged from 9.6 to 1549 ng L−1, with an average of 300 ng L−1. Tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP) (4.6–921 ng L−1, mean: 186 ng L−1) and tris(2-choroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) (1.3–268 ng L−1, mean: 80.2 ng L−1) were the most abundant OPEs and their distribution patterns are similar, indicating the same source (r = 0.61, P < 0.05) and the influence of large production and consumption of chlorinated OPEs in the region. Priority should be given to TCPP, PCEP and TPPO due to their high concentrations in the rivers and potential threat to aquatic organisms.

Abstract:The presence of 14 organophosphate esters (OPEs) in surface sediments from a typical fishing port agglomeration in Dalian, North China was investigated for the first time. Tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEHP), triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO), and tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) dominated 12 detectable OPEs (∑OPEs), with concentrations ranging widely from 0.56 to 352 ng/g (dry weight basis). The ∑OPE levels in sediments varied significantly across fishing harbors of various grades, and within the same grade, highlighting uneven distribution of OPE sources and inputs to harbors. The first- and second-class fishing harbors had higher geometric mean of ∑OPE contents compared to center and natural harbors, reflecting higher OPE pollution in these areas. Although there were significant correlations among the OPE congeners with high detection frequencies, the composition patterns of sediment OPEs varied considerably among fishing ports. The sediments in the center and first-class harbors had higher abundance of non-chlorinated OPEs (non-Cl-OPEs), suggesting heterogeneity in source strength and pollution characteristics of Cl- and non-Cl-OPEs in fishing ports. The distribution of OPEs in sediments was weakly associated with sediment organic carbon, but not socioeconomic variables, indicating complex controlling factors of their distributions in port sediments. The ecological risks of sediment OPEs were evaluated, and while OPE accumulations ranged broadly (7–684 ng/cm2), exposure hazards were negligible. The sediments in first- and second-class fishing harbors, which had greater OPE accumulation, were identified as reservoirs of OPEs in port aquatic environments.

Abstract:The large-scale use of organophosphate esters (OPEs) as flame retardants and plasticizers, has led to their prevalence in the surrounding environment, with unknown broader impacts. This study describes the distribution of OPEs in water and soil environments, explores the correlation between their distribution and socioeconomic or climatic characteristics, and assesses the ecological risk of OPEs to aquatic and terrestrial organisms. Our findings showed that socioeconomic characteristics, including the model of industrial development, population density, urbanization, and treatment rate of domestic sewage, play a significant role in driving the distribution of OPEs in surface water and land use. The excessive use of industrial and domestic water directly and indirectly increases the concentrations of OPEs in surface water, and an increase in precipitation can wash out OPEs in the surface soil and allowing them to seep into the groundwater aquifer. OPEs were most prevalent in surface water and land use, but more notable concentrations were also found in farming (∑OPEs: 1.19 ng g −1 –1224.61 ng g −1 ) and construction lands (∑OPEs: 0.8 ng g −1 –11,557.83 ng g −1 ). Based on the risk quotient and risk prioritizing (i.e., expected risk) methods, the ecological risks of OPEs to terrestrial organisms are more sensitive than those on aquatic organisms, particularly for tricresyl phosphate, tris(phenyl) phosphate, tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate, tris(2,3-dibromopropyl) phosphate, and 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate. However, the lack of clear dose–response relationships and toxicological data for most OPEs severely limits their risk assessment. Future research should focus on assessing the impacts of these OPEs on aquatic and terrestrial biodiversity, as well as on strengthening risk management and control.

Abstract:Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are frequently used as flame retardants and plasticizers in various commercial products. While initially considered as substitutes for brominated flame retardants, they have faced restrictions in some countries due to their toxic effects on organisms. We collected 37 soil and crop samples in 20 cities along the coast of South China, and OPEs were detected in all of them. Meanwhile, we studied the contamination and potential human health risks of OPEs. In soil samples, the combined concentrations of eight OPEs varied between 74.7 and 410 ng/g, averaging at 255 ng/g. Meanwhile, in plant samples, the collective concentrations of eight OPEs ranged from 202 to 751 ng/g, with an average concentration of 381 ng/g. TDCIPP, TCPP, TCEP, and ToCP were the main OPE compounds in both plant and soil samples. Within the study area, the contaminants showed different spatial distributions. Notably, higher OPEs were found in coastal agricultural soils in Guangdong Province and crops in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The results of an ecological risk assessment show that the farmland soil along the southern coast of China is at high or medium ecological risk. The average non-carcinogenic risk and the carcinogenic risk of OPEs in soil through ingestion and dermal exposure routes are within acceptable levels. Meanwhile, this study found that the dietary intake of OPEs through food is relatively low, but twice as high as other studies, requiring serious attention. The research findings suggest that the human risk assessment indicates potential adverse effects on human health due to OPEs in the soil-plant system along the coast of South China. This study provides a crucial foundation for managing safety risks in agricultural operations involving OPEs.

Abstract:Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are man-made organic pollutants that are used in flame retardants (FRs), plasticizers, antifoaming and hydraulic agents, and extractants. The demand for FRs in China has increased, thereby rapidly increasing the use of OPEs and hence resulted in its high levels in the environment. In this study, we measured the concentrations of seven OPE congeners in the seawaters of the Bohai Sea (BS), the Yellow Sea (YS), and the East China Sea (ECS). The horizontal and vertical spatial distributions were then analyzed to assess the OPE pollution. The total concentrations of the seven OPE congeners (ΣOPEs) in the three seas ranged from 7.31 to 100 ng L−1. The main OPE compounds were tris-(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP, 3.97–35.6 ng L−1), tris-(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP, 0.59–19.8 ng L−1), and triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO, from below the detection limit to 43.5 ng L−1). The inventory of the ΣOPEs in the BS, YS, and ECS was estimated as 54.2, 513, and 3950 tons, respectively. Horizontally, the ΣOPE concentration was ranked as BS > YS > ECS. In the vertical direction, the OPE concentrations in the surface water were higher than those in the bottom water. Ocean currents and riverine inputs might be the main factors influencing the distributions of the OPEs in these seas. Moreover, a seasonal variation (summer 2015 versus winter 2016) in the OPEs was observed in the YS, which was probably due to anthropogenic influences and hydrological, meteorological, and biological factors.

Abstract:Organophosphates （OPEs） are widely used as flame retardants and additives and thus are commonly detected in the environment. In order to explore their environmental behavior, the concentrations of 13 OPEs in the surface water and sediment of Dongting Lake were analyzed using UPLC-MS/MS. The results showed that 11 OPEs were detected, with detection frequencies of 5.26%-100% and 58.3%-100%, and the concentrations of OPEs were 2.06-2 028 ng·L-1 and 19.6-2 232 ng·g-1 in water and sediment, respectively. Overall, contamination concentrations were ranked in descending order as follows： inflowing rivers, lake area, and outlet, whereas the spatial distribution of concentrations in sediment was inversely proportional to hydrodynamics. The concentration of OPEs in Dongting Lake was at a high level compared with that of domestic and foreign lakes. Among the detected 11 OPEs, tri-iso-butyl phosphate （TnBP） and （TiBP） were dominant in water, accounting for 52.3% and 22.4% of ∑OPEs, respectively. TPhP was the dominant OPEs in sediment, accounting for 31.2% of ∑OPEs. The correlation and principal component analysis indicated that OPEs pollution in Dongting Lake was mainly affected by industrial production emissions, fishery aquaculture, and atmospheric deposition. The assessment results of the risk entropy showed that most of the detected OPEs in water had relatively low ecological risks, whereas the ecological risk of 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate （EHDPP） at some sampling points requires further attention.

Abstract:Organic pollutant fractions should be closely investigated because of their different ecological risks. In this study, we examined the distribution of organophosphate ester (OPE) fractions (labile, stable-adsorbed, and tight-adsorbed fractions) in sediments from Eastern China Marginal Seas (ECMSs) and assessed the influencing factor of the fractions. The mean values of total OPEs in ECMSs are 13.70 ± 6.16 μg L-1 in seawater and 32.04 ± 14.31 μg kg-1 in sediment. The results showed that OPE concentration decreased from the northern to the southern ECMSs, and tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate and tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate were the primary OPEs. The mean contents of labile, stable–adsorbed, and tight–adsorbed fractions in the ECMSs were 9.50, 11.29, and 11.71 μg kg-1, respectively. Labile OPEs were predominant in offshore waters; the percentage of stable- and tight-adsorbed fractions increased progressively with offshore distance in ECMSs. The specific surface area and surface functional groups of sediment were not consistent with the fraction concentrations from the correlation coefficient, but the gross domestic product per coastline agreed well with the fraction distribution. Based on this, we conclude that human activity, rather than physicochemical characteristics of sediments, may be the primary influencing factor of the relative distribution of different OPE concentration fractions in ECMSs.
