Abstract:The relationship between groundwater and lakes in Qaidam Basin is often overlooked. Therefore, we employed Landsat satellite images and meteorological data to investigate the causes of lake expansion through model calculation and statistical analysis and then determine groundwater sources through isotope analysis (2H, 3H, and 18O). In the two study periods of 2003–2011 and 2011–present, temperature, precipitation, and runoff increased at a steady rate, whereas the expansion rate of Tuosu Lake increased from 1.22 km2/yearr to 3.38 km2/yearr. This significant increase in the rate of lake expansion reflects the substantial contribution of groundwater to lake expansion. The groundwater contribution to the lake includes not only the glacial meltwater that infiltrates the piedmont plain but also other, more isotopically deleted water sources from other basins. It is speculated that the 2003 Ms 6.4 earthquake in the northwest of the Delingha region was a possible mechanism for lake expansion. Earthquakes can enhance crustal permeability and keep fractures open, which promotes groundwater contribution to lakes and in turn causes rapid lake expansion and an increased groundwater level. This study is important for understanding the sources, circulation, and evolution of groundwater in Qaidam Basin.

Groundwater discharge tracing for a large Ice-Covered lake in the Tibetan Plateau: Integrated satellite remote sensing data, chemical components and isotopes (D, 18O, and 222Rn)

Abstract:It has been known that groundwater-lake water interaction plays an important role in mass exchange between land and lakes. However, most of the lakes in the world freeze during the winter, and few studies of groundwater and surface water interaction (groundwater discharge tracing) focus on ice-covered lakes. This study investigated groundwater discharge into a large ice-covered lake, Xiao Qaidam Lake in the Tibetan Plateau (TP), using satellite remote sensing and chemical and isotopic tracing. Analysis of chemical components, stable isotopes (D, 18O) and 222Rn revealed that groundwater discharge occurred in the western and southern portions of Xiao Qaidam Lake. Remote sensing data (the distribution of and variation in lake surface temperature, LST) revealed these locations of groundwater discharge and indicated additional groundwater discharge in areas of springs. Based on the regression model between LST and 222Rn activity in lake water and 222Rn mass balance model, the groundwater discharge into Xiao Qaidam Lake was estimated to be (2.77 ± 0.26) × 105 m3/d, which is slightly higher than river water input at summer. In addition, this study also suggests that ice melting process should be considered when tracing groundwater discharge into an ice-covered lake, and that the LST distribution during the icing period is better than the LST variation for tracing groundwater discharge because the ice eliminated noise from wind and surface water. The study provides insight into the tracing of groundwater discharge into large ice-covered lakes in the TP and elsewhere.

Abstract:Abstract. Groundwater origin, flow and geochemical evolution in the Golmud River watershed of the Qaidam Basin was assessed using hydrogeochemical, isotopic and numerical approaches. The stable isotopic results show groundwater in the basin originates from precipitation and meltwater in the mountainous areas of the Tibetan Plateau. Modern water was found in the alluvial fan and shallow aquifers of the loess plain. Deep confined groundwater was recharged by paleowater during the late Pleistocene and Holocene under a cold climate. Groundwater in the low-lying depression of the central basin is composed of paleobrines migrated from the western part of the basin due to tectonic uplift in the geological past. Groundwater chemistry is controlled by mineral dissolution (halite, gypsum, anhydrite, mirabilite), silicate weathering, cation exchange, evaporation and mineral precipitation (halite, gypsum, anhydrite, aragonite, calcite, dolomite) and varies from fresh to brine with the water types evolving from HCO3 ⋅ Cl-Ca ⋅ Mg ⋅ Na to Cl-Na, Cl-K-Na and Cl-Mg type along the flow path. Groundwater flow patterns are closely related to stratigraphic control and lithological distribution. Three hierarchical groundwater flow systems, namely local, intermediate and regional, were identified using numerical modeling. The quantity of water discharge from these three systems accounts for approximately 83 %, 14 % and 3 %, respectively, of the total groundwater quantity of the watershed. This study can enhance the understanding of groundwater origin, circulation and evolution in the Qaidam Basin as well as other arid endorheic watersheds in northwestern China and elsewhere worldwide.

Abstract:The Qaidam Basin (QB) is a concentrated distribution area and chemical industrial bases of salt lakes in China. Lakes in the QB have been expanding during the past 20 years. Rapid lake expansion resulted in some considerable scientific issues on the protection of salt lake resources and infrastructure, and monitoring of hydrological processes at the lake-basin scale. Although the spatial-temporal trends of lake changes on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) have been well documented, the underlying influencing mechanism and hydrogeological implications of rapid lake changes in the QB are not well understood. Three lakes in the northern QB were selected to investigate lake water level fluctuations on different time scales based on extensive in-situ monitoring and satellite observations. The influencing mechanism and hydrogeological implications of rapid changes of terminal lakes were discussed in combination with the reported increasing precipitation rate and mass balance of glaciers in the northern QTP. Results reveal the following: (1) the fluctuation pattern of Sugan Lake was asynchronous and out of phase with that of Xiao Qaidam and Toson Lakes during the monitoring period; (2) Sugan Lake water rose gradually, and the rise interval was from late April to early July. In contrast, Xiao Qaidam and Toson Lakes took on a rapid and steep rise, and the rise intervalwas from late July to September; (3) the influencing mechanisms for rapid lake fluctuations are controlled by different factors: glacier and snow melting with increasing temperature for Sugan Lake and increasing precipitation for Xiao Qaidam and Toson Lakes; (4) in accordance with different intervals and influencing mechanisms of rapid lake expansions in the QB, hydrological risk precaution of lakes and corresponding river catchments was conducted in different parts of the basin. This study provided an important scientific basis for assessing the hydrological process and hydrological risk precaution, and protection of salt lake resources along with rapid lake expansions in the arid area.
Spatial prediction of groundwater potential and driving factor analysis based on deep learning and geographical detector in an arid endorheic basin

Abstract:Substantial mineral resources are enriched in the arid endorheic basins; however, due to environmental constraints, these areas face water shortages as well as its extremely uneven spatiotemporal distribution, which restricts the development of local industry and agriculture. Identifying these areas of the high groundwater potential are useful for groundwater supply and its sustainable planning. In this study, the Qaidam Basin in Northwest China was taken as an example. We collected 17 conditioning factors (i.e., precipitation, evaporation, geology, soil, Topographic Wetness Index, Fractional Vegetation Cover, distance to rivers, river density, distance to roads, road density, distance to faults, fault density, slope, curvature, residential density, landcover, and geomorphology) affecting groundwater resources in arid areas. We also collected 139 groundwater samples and used random forest (RF), deep neural network (DNN) and convolutional neural network (CNN) (associated with one-hot encoding) to predict the groundwater potential in this area. The Qaidam Basin was discretized into 420,000 sample points calculated in turn by the above three models. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and area under the curve (AUC) were used to test the accuracy of the three methods. Results indicated that the prediction scores for the three methods were 0.742, 0.790, and 0.817, and the AUC was 0.783, 0.811, and 0.846, respectively. The result provided by CNN was more precise than the results provided by RF and DNN. Additionally, this study aims to investigate the effects of the aforementioned factors on groundwater potential. A total of 17 factors were combined with the Geodetector model to quantify their impacts and interactions on the groundwater potential of the Qaidam Basin. Results revealed that the critical factors affecting groundwater potential in the Qaidam Basin were geomorphology (0.183) and evaporation (0.144), and their combined contribution was 0.457. The influence of arbitrary two-factors on groundwater potential is larger than that of themselves, demonstrating linear or nonlinear enhancement between them and confirming that the factor selections were sensible. The method based on CNN-Geodetector provides a novel approach for calculating groundwater potential, selecting appropriate evaluation indicators and quantifying the driving factors in the arid endorheic basins.

Achieving Higher Resolution Lake Area From Remote Sensing Images Through An Unsupervised Deep Learning Super-Resolution Method

Abstract:Lakes have been identified as an important indicator of climate change and a finer lake area can better reflect the changes. In this paper, we propose an effective unsupervised deep gradient network (UDGN) to generate a higher resolution lake area from remote sensing images. By exploiting the power of deep learning, UDGN models the internal recurrence of information inside the single image and its corresponding gradient map to generate images with higher spatial resolution. The gradient map is derived from the input image to provide important geographical information. Since the training samples are only extracted from the input image, UDGN can adapt to different settings per image. Based on the superior adaptability of the UDGN model, two strategies are proposed for super-resolution (SR) mapping of lakes from multispectral remote sensing images. Finally, Landsat 8 and MODIS (moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer) images from two study areas on the Tibetan Plateau in China were used to evaluate the performance of UDGN. Compared with four unsupervised SR methods, UDGN obtained the best SR results as well as lake extraction results in terms of both quantitative and visual aspects. The experiments prove that our approach provides a promising way to break through the limitations of median-low resolution remote sensing images in lake change monitoring, and ultimately support finer lake applications.
Characterizing the interaction of groundwater with surface water and precipitation in the Mongolian Plateau in China

Abstract:Due to the arid climate, groundwater is a vital water resource for ecosystems such as those associated with Dalinor Lake in the Inner Mongolian Plateau, China. This research studied the groundwater circulation mechanisms in Dalinor Lake and surrounding areas and their contribution to surface water, based on remote sensing and environmental isotopes analyses. Using Landsat satellite data, it was found that the lake area of Dalinor Lake decreased by 12% between 1986 and 2021. The shrinkage rate increased from 0.31 km 2 /year in 1986–2005 to 1.24 km 2 /year in 2005–2021. The groundwater contribution to the lake is 1.49 × 10 8 m 3 /year. Soil profiles and a rainfall simulation test revealed that precipitation infiltration provides limited recharge to groundwater. The groundwater stable isotopic signature (δD = –88.55‰, δ 18 O = –10.01‰), which is more depleted than local precipitation (δD = –63.83‰, δ 18 O = –8.76‰), implies that local precipitation is not the main source of groundwater recharge. The groundwater stable isotopic signature in different river sources is diverse, indicating the spatial specificity of groundwater recharge sources. Groundwater and river water have mantle-derived helium ( R / R a > 1) and high tritium concentrations, so it is speculated that groundwater in the Dalinor Lake and its surrounding area is recharged by modern precipitation (post 1960s) outside the study area through fast channels, such as fault systems. This study provides information necessary for effective water management in the Inner Mongolian Plateau.

Abstract:Protective immune responses against the infective larvae of Brugia malayi have been demonstrated in BALB/c mice. Various factors governing resistance to reinfection have been examined to provide baseline data for use of this model in studies of immunoprophylaxis. Parasites that established following a primary infection survived for approximately 10 days, following which numbers declined rapidly to a low level. Resistance was evidenced by a more rapid clearance of secondary infection parasites. The degree of immunity expressed was not related to the route of administration of the initial infection (subcutaneous, intravenous, intramuscular, or intraperitoneal). However, both the level of resistance and the rapidity of its expression were dependent on dose, with as few as 2 larvae stimulating measurable immunity. Sensitization with living male or female adult worms, fourth stage larvae or microfilariae of B. malayi, or infective larvae of B. pahangi conferred substantial resistance to larval challenge. Significant levels of immunity were also induced by dead B. malayi larvae (46%) and their aqueous extracts (76%), but not with the corresponding insoluble fraction. We suggest that this experimental system is ideally suited to aid in the identification of putative protective antigens in brugian filariasis.

Abstract:Bosten Lake is a crucial water source in arid northwest China, which has been maintaining the ecological balance of the southern Xinjiang region. It contributes to the sustainable development of the local economy and watershed ecology. Insufficient hydrological data for the basin, however, cause uncertainty in hydrological modeling and makes it difficult to calculate water availability and lake-water storage using conventional methods. Therefore, this article proposed a novel method to retrieve the lake's water depth from Landsat-8 OLI and ICESat-2 satellite data using neural network (NN) model. Specifically, the Rayleigh-corrected top-of-atmosphere (TOA) reflectance ( ) in the 443–2300 nm range was employed as the input to the NN model for the retrieval of water depth. This avoids the requirement to correct the effects of aerosols. In addition, the water depth retrieved by the NN model was compared with a conventional dual-band ratio model (DBRM). To evaluate the accuracy of the corrected ICESat-2 photon data, the in situ water depths were compared with the corrected ICESat-2 photon data (considering water-level variations at different times), and 20 in situ water depth values near the ICESat-2 track were selected for verification. The results showed that 1) the in situ water depth and the corrected ICESat-2 photon data had the coefficient of determination ( ) values of 0.94; 2) NN inversion of bathymetry presented a feasible method of obtaining regional bathymetry, with of 0.87, root mean square error (RMSE) being 1.17 m, and mean absolute error (MAE) being 0.26 m. In contrast, DBRM generated the , RMSE, and MAE values of 0.74, 1.62, and 0.93 m, respectively; and 3) the water storage in Bosten Lake's from April to September in 2022 ranged from to . The findings can provide a strong scientific basis for the sustainable development and the rational allocation regional water resources.

Spatial-Temporal Variations and Their Dynamics of the Saline Lakes in the Qaidam Basin over the Past 40 Years

Abstract:The saline lakes in the Qaidam basin, providing numerous saline mineral resources to the development of China's western region have changed greatly in recent decades. Understanding the spatial-temporal variations of the saline lakes for exploring the dynamics of those changes is not only essential for sustainable development of the region, but also is of significance for scientific studies. By using multi-temporal Landsat and HJ-1A/1B remote sensing data, this study focused on detecting the spatial-temporal variations of the saline lakes concerning with their extent changes with the influence of climate and human activities in the Qaidam basin from 1973 to 2014 based on the normalized difference water index (NDWI) and maximum likelihood supervised classification techniques. The results indicated that most of the saline lakes studied in this paper across the study region had experienced great changes over the past 40 years, and each saline lake differed considerably on extent. The runoff supplies from the surrounding rivers and the large-scale saline resource exploitation were considered as direct reasons for the saline lake extent changes, in which climatic changes characterized by the increase of temperature and slight decrease of precipitation over the region had significant impacts on the lake area variations directly or indirectly.

Abstract:<p>Arid basins in the alpine‐cold area have their unique environmental settings and special groundwater circulation system. Sources, components and their variation of recharge processes for most rivers and groundwater of seasonal scale are still unknown in response to climate warming. Stable H and O isotopes were sampled monthly in river water and groundwater, and water table fluctuations were monitored over a complete seasonal cycle from dry to wet season conditions in the Nalenggele River catchment in the western Qaidam Basin, China. The primary objectives of our study were to demonstrate and explain the mechanism governing the rapid circulation in the groundwater system. Distinct seasonal fluctuations in the water table with corresponding stable isotopic variations can be observed in the alluvial fan of the Nalenggele River catchment. The recharge mechanism is related to the coincidence of several favorable hydrological conditions including an abundant recharge water source from summer precipitation and glacial snow melt in the high Kunlun Mountains, large‐scale active faults, a volcanic crater, and other macro‐structures that act as favorable recharge conduits, a large hydraulic head, and the presence of >100 m of unconsolidated sand and gravel acting as the main aquifer. Abundant and rapid renewable groundwater resources are potential water sources for future development in the Qaidam Basin.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.</p>

Missing water from the Qiangtang Basin on the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:The Qiangtang Basin is a large endorheic basin in the inner part of the Tibetan Plateau, and has been thought to be a dry region in contrast with the surrounding wet outer region that feeds all the major Asian rivers. Combining surface hydrological data with modeling and satellite data from 2002 to 2016 CE, our study reveals that an enormous amount of water, ~54 ± 4 km3, is unaccounted for annually in the Qiangtang Basin. The amount of missing water is comparable to the total annual discharge of the Yellow River. Data from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite mission show little increase of local terrestrial water storage. Thus, the missing water must have flowed out of the basin through underground passages. Interpreting this result in the context of recent seismic and geological studies of Tibet, we suggest that a significant amount of meteoric water in the Qiangtang Basin leaks out by way of groundwater flow through deep normal faults and tensional fractures along the nearly north-south rift valleys that are oriented subnormal to and cross the surficial hydrological divide on the southern margin of the basin. Cross-basin groundwater outflow of such a magnitude defies the traditional view of a basin-scale water cycle and leads to a very different picture from the previous hydrological view of the Qiangtang Basin. This finding calls for major rethinking of the regional water balance.

Abstract:Lakes are an important component of global water resources. In order to achieve accurate lake extractions on a large scale, this study takes the Tibetan Plateau as the study area and proposes an Automated Lake Extraction Workflow (ALEW) based on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) and deep learning in response to the problems of a low lake identification accuracy and low efficiency in complex situations. It involves pre-processing massive images and creating a database of examples of lake extraction on the Tibetan Plateau. A lightweight convolutional neural network named LiteConvNet is constructed that makes it possible to obtain spatial–spectral features for accurate extractions while using less computational resources. We execute model training and online predictions using the Google Cloud platform, which leads to the rapid extraction of lakes over the whole Tibetan Plateau. We assess LiteConvNet, along with thresholding, traditional machine learning, and various open-source classification products, through both visual interpretation and quantitative analysis. The results demonstrate that the LiteConvNet model may greatly enhance the precision of lake extraction in intricate settings, achieving an overall accuracy of 97.44%. The method presented in this paper demonstrates promising capabilities in extracting lake information on a large scale, offering practical benefits for the remote sensing monitoring and management of water resources in cloudy and climate-differentiated regions.

Hydrochemical and Isotopic Characteristics and the Spatiotemporal Differences of Surface Water and Groundwater in the Qaidam Basin, China

Abstract:In the context of climate change, precipitation and runoff in the arid inland basins of northwest China have undergone significant changes. The Qaidam Basin (QB) is a typical highland arid inland area. Understanding the spatial and temporal variations in surface water and groundwater chemistry and isotopes, as well as their causes, is crucial for future water resource management and ecological protection. Samples of river, lake, and groundwater, as well as others, were collected and tested in five typical watersheds in the summer and winter. The hydrochemistry and isotopic spatiotemporal differences in various water bodies were studied using the significant difference method, water vapor flux models, hydrochemistry, isotopes, and other methods for cause analyses. The results indicate the following: (1) There are differences in hydrochemistry between the southern and northern basins because the southern basin is more influenced by the dissolution of salt rocks and evaporation, whereas the northern basin is mainly affected by carbonate weathering. (2) The enrichment of δD and δ18O in the northern basin gradually increases from west to east, while in the southern basin, it is the opposite. This is because the southern basin receives a larger contribution of water vapor from the mid-latitude westerlies, while the northern basin primarily relies on local evaporation as its water vapor source. (3) Significant differences are observed in the total dissolved solids (TDS) and hydrochemical types of river water and groundwater between the summer and winter due to higher rates of rock weathering and evaporation in the summer. (4) The more pronounced seasonal differences in hydrogen and oxygen stable isotopes in the southern basin are due to higher rates of internal water vapor circulation in the summer. (5) The similarity in characteristics between river water and groundwater is the result of strong exchanges between river water and groundwater from piedmonts to terminals. The spatiotemporal heterogeneity of terminal lakes is attributed to the accumulation of salts and groundwater replenishment from other sources.

Abstract:The Ordos Basin is one of the most intensively studied groundwater basins in China. The Ordos Plateau, located in the north part of the Ordos Basin, is ideal to study the pattern of regional groundwater circulation induced by water-table undulations due to the wavy topography and the relatively simple aquifer systems with macroscopically homogeneous sandstone. In catchments located near the first-order divide, the water table is found to be a subdued replica of the topography, and the nonclosed water-table contours in topographic highs of a catchment are indicative of regional groundwater outflow to other catchments. In topographic lows, groundwater-fed lakes/rivers, topography-driven flowing wells, water-loving and/or salt-tolerant vegetation, and soap holes are all indicative of discharge areas. In discharge areas, although groundwater inflow from recharge areas is relatively stable, seasonal variations in groundwater recharge and evapotranspiration lead to significant seasonal fluctuations in the water table, which can be used to estimate groundwater inflow and evapotranspiration rates based on water balance at different stages of water-table change. In the lowest reaches of a complex basin, superposition of local flow systems on regional flow systems has been identified based on groundwater samples collected from wells with different depths and geophysical measurements of apparent resistivity, both of which can be used for characterizing groundwater flow systems. This study enhances understanding of the pattern of regional groundwater circulation in the Ordos Plateau, and also tests the effectiveness of methods for groundwater flow-system characterization.
Monitoring Lake Changes of Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau over the Past 30 Years Using Satellite Remote Sensing Data

Abstract:During the years 2006–2009, lakes in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) were investigated using satellite remote sensing strategies. We report the results of this investigation as well as follow-up research and expanded work. For the investigation, we mainly focused on lakes whose areas are more than 1 km2. The remote sensing data that we used included 408 scenes of CBERS CCD images and 5 scenes of Landsat ETM+ images in Qinghai Province and Tibet Autonomous Region. All these data were acquired around years 2005–2006. Besides remote sensing images, we also collected 1,259 topographic maps. Numbers and areas of lakes were analyzed statistically, which were then compared with those coming from the first lake investigation (implemented between the 1960s and 1980s). According to our investigation, up to and around year 2005–2006, the total number of lakes in the QTP was 1,055 (222 in Qinghai and 833 in Tibet), accounting for more than 30 % of that of China. Thirty newborn lakes with area >1 km2 were found, and 5 dead lakes with initial area >1 km2 were also found. Among those 13 big lakes (>500 km2), Yamzhog Yumco had seriously shrunk, and it has continued to shrink in recent years; Qinghai Lake had shrunk during the period, but some new researches indicated that it has been expanding since the year 2004; Siling Co, Nam Co, and Chibuzhang Co had expanded in the period. We divided the newborn lakes into six categories according to their forming reasons, including river expansion, wetland conversion, etc. The changes of natural conditions led to the death of four lakes, and human exploitation was the main reason for the death of Dalianhai Lake in Qinghai. We picked out three regions which were sensitive to the change of climate and ecological environment: Nagqu Region, Kekexili Region, and the source area of the Yellow River (SAYR). Lakes in both Nagqu and Kekexili have been expanded; meanwhile, most lakes in the SAYR have obviously been shrunk. These regional patterns of lake changes were highly related to variations of temperature, glacier, precipitation, and evaporation. Our investigation and analysis will provide references for researches related to lake changes in the QTP and the response to climate fluctuations.

Abstract:Groundwater plays a key role in maintaining the ecology and environment in the hyperarid Qaidam Basin (QB). Indirect evidence and data from sparse observation wells suggest that groundwater in the QB is increasing but there has been no regional assessment of the groundwater conditions in the entire basin because of its remoteness and the severity of the arid environment. Here we report changes in the spatial and temporal distribution of terrestrial water storage (TWS) in the northern Tibetan Plateau (NTP) using Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) data. Our study confirms long-term (2003-2012) TWS increases in the NTP. Between 2003 and 2012 the TWS increased by 88.4 and 20.6 km3 in the NTP and the QB, respectively, which is 225% and 52% of the capacity of the Three Gorges Reservoir, respectively. Soil and water changes from the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) were also used to identify groundwater storage in the TWS and to demonstrate a long-term increase in groundwater storage in the QB. We demonstrate that increases in groundwater, not lake water, are dominant in the QB, as observed by groundwater levels. Our study suggests that the TWS increase was likely caused by a regional increase in precipitation and a decrease in evaporation. Degradation of the permafrost increases the thickness of the active layers providing increased storage for infiltrated precipitation and snow and ice melt water, which may also contribute to the increased TWS. The huge increase of water storage in the NTP will have profound effects, not only on local ecology and environment, but also on global water storage and sea level changes.

Abstract:The QTP (Qinghai-Tibet Plateau) holds the greatest concentration of high-elevation inland lakes in the world, and most of these lakes are located in the QTP endorheic basin. Accelerated lake expansion in the endorheic basin since 2000 has been confirmed by many studies, but there is disagreement as to which components of the water balance explain most of the lake expansion. In this paper, based on Landsat images, meteorological data, glacier data and permafrost monitoring data, we analyzed the spatial-temporal changes in lake area and further explored the driving factors behind rapid lake expansion in different zones in the endorheic basin. The results suggested that the spatial pattern of trends in lake area in the endorheic basin from 2000 to 2017 showed a southwest-northeast transition from contracting to slightly expanding to rapidly expanding. More importantly, the dramatic lake expansion observed in most regions was statistically significant (0.01 similar to 26.29 km(2)/yr). Although retreating glaciers may have contributed to lake growth, this can not fully explain the recent lake expansion. We find that increasing precipitation was the primary driver behind lake expansion, and that permafrost degradation accelerated lake expansion. Lakes on the northern slope of the Gangdise Mountains, fed by the most rapidly retreating glaciers, were relatively stable or even contracted. In contrast, most of the nonglacier-fed lakes in the Hoh Xil region and the central endorheic basin nevertheless experienced significant expansion and slight expansion, respectively, which were mainly attributed to the greatest increase in AP (annual precipitation). Remarkable lake expansion was found in the continuous permafrost zone. The increasing ALT (active layer thickness) and soil temperature of permafrost resulted in an increase in meltwater from ground ice, the partial release of soil moisture and an amount of unfrozen water content, which has contributed to supply lakes and accelerated lake expansion.

Abstract:Study Region Tongde Basin, a typical alpine basin on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau Study focus Research on the hydrochemical pattern and availability of groundwater is very limited in alpine regions, which greatly hinders the rational ulitilization and scientific management of groundwater resources. Multiple approaches integrating self-organizing map, K-means, entropy weight were employed to elucidate the distinct hydrochemical evolution patterns and controlling mechanisms of groundwater in alpine basins with dense human activities. New hydrological insights for the region Multiple hydrochemical evolution patterns were discovered for groundwater in present alpine basin on northeastern Tibetan Plateau. Groundwater presents a gradual hydrochemical evolution from the piedmont to the riverside under the natural regulation with the increasing of TDS and major ions along the flow path. While, groundwater at some sporadic sites is featured with relatively high total alkalinity due to carbonate mineral dissolution. The riverine groundwaters are regulated by the strong hydrodynamic condition of river and demonstrate fresher hydrochemical characteristics. Groundwaters in the irrigation areas are featured by elevated nitrate levels with a maximum of 42.86 mg/L, attributed to agricultural pollution inputs. A conceptual model was established to illustrate the distinct hydrochemical fingerprints, evolution patterns and controlling mechanisms of groundwater in alpine basins that with dense human activities. This research can enhance the understanding of groundwater chemical status, genesis and availability, and is beneficial for the conservation and sustainable management of groundwater resources in ecologically fragile alpine regions worldwide.
