Abstract:Nowadays, smartphones have become indispensable for people and many users may browse information on their smartphones during walking. This raises severe concerns about pedestrian safety when distracted users inadvertently walks from the sidewalk onto the street. In this paper, we present WatchOut, a convenient pedestrian alerting system based on fine-grained step classification (e.g., flat, up and down the ramp) and event detection (e.g., entering the street, turn) in an urban environment. In contrast to existing systems that rely on shoe-mounted sensors, Watchout leverages rich sensors on the smartphone without requiring any additional hardwares. With carefully designed realtime data processing and classification algorithms, WatchOut can achieve a high detection accuracy. We develop a fully-functional Android application of WatchOut with user-friendly interface that will issue timely alerts to warn users of unsafe conditions. Extensive experiments with 23 volunteers in real pedestrian environment have confirmed the effectiveness of WatchOut, which achieves a comparable detection accuracy as the shoe-mounted system with off-the-shelf smartphones.
Effect of Technological Distractions on Pedestrian Safe-Crossing Performance During Mixed Pedestrian–Bicycle Flow Overlapping with Turning Vehicles: A Case Study of Hangzhou, China

Abstract:Crashes involving pedestrians are most likely to occur when the pedestrian is crossing the road. In the particular context of road traffic systems in China, with frequent on-crosswalk cycling and pedestrian green signals overlapping with vehicle right- and left-turn green signals, walking on a signalized intersection crosswalk seems much more challenging. As such, pedestrians need to be more cautious and perform properly. The present study designed tasks for safe crossing at this form of intersection and, using video cameras, explored the performance of pedestrians. Taking smartphones as source of distraction, comparisons were made between distracted and nondistracted pedestrians. Of the phone use rate of 20.3% while crossing, 13.4% were visual-manual interactions, 3.5% were hand-free phones, and 3.4% were hand-held phones. For both genders, pedestrians who crossed while visually-manually interacting with a mobile or talking/listening on a mobile were less likely to glance before initiating crossing, less likely to look at traffic while crossing, less likely to avoid on-crosswalk opposite pedestrians and bicycles, and less likely to make eye contact with right/left-turning drivers. Surprisingly, female pedestrians who were texting took longer to react to the pedestrian green signal than males who were texting. Findings of this study suggest that distraction while crossing roads exposes pedestrians to a high risk of accident. Hence, to improve pedestrian safety, the authors advise relevant actions such as unsafe-crossing warning technologies; pedestrian, bicyclist, and driver education; and law enforcement. Factors Influencing Pedestrian Smartphone Use and Effect of Combined Visual and Auditory Intervention on “Smombies”: A Chinese Observational Study

Abstract:Objective: This was a large-scale multicenter study with two objectives. One was to study the factors influencing pedestrian smartphone use while crossing roads, and the other was to study the effect of combined visual and auditory intervention on smartphone zombies (smombies) at crossroads. Methods: This study was conducted in four different Chinese cities. By observing pedestrians crossing intersections, the weather, time, and characteristics of the pedestrians were recorded by four researchers. Then, its influencing factors and the effects of the intervention were studied in two consecutive periods. Results: A total of 25,860 pedestrians (13,086 without intervention and 12,774 with visual and auditory intervention) were observed in this study. Logistic regressions showed that gender, age of the pedestrians, weather, and time were the factors influencing smombies crossing roads. The number of smartphone users decreased from 4,289 to 3,579 (28.1%) ( χ 2 = 69.120, p < 0.001) when the intervention was conducted. Conclusion: Based on large-sample, multicenter research, this study revealed the factors influencing pedestrian smartphone use while crossing roads, contributing to our understanding of the current situation of smombies in China. Furthermore, the effect of visual and auditory intervention was demonstrated, providing a new paradigm for global prevention of smombie behavior.

The Intersection of Phones and Traffic Lights: Analysis of Usage and Contributing Factors

Abstract:The use of mobile phones by drivers while stopped at red traffic lights represents a potential threat due to the cognitive residuals from recent phone use. This paper presents the results of a study that investigated the rates, strategies and activities of phone use in this situation using both video-based naturalistic and online questionnaire data. The significant influencing factors were analysed. It was found that about 37% of drivers used their phones at traffic lights and the majority (85%) of phone use was initiated at intersections, suggesting the relevance of phone use at traffic lights. The questionnaire data revealed that the main purposes of phone use at red lights are social media (32%), followed by text messaging (19%) and map navigation (13%), with the phone ringing, boredom and habit being the main reasons given for engaging in such activities. A logistic regression model identified waiting time, time of day, driver's age, vehicle category, vehicle value, age of driving licence and the presence of passengers as predictors for phone use. Policymakers and driver educators can find useful information in this paper to enforce laws and educate drivers to ensure safety and efficiency at signalised intersections, thus avoiding potential accidents.

Abstract:Cell phone use while walking escalates pedestrian safety risks, particularly among students, given their heavy reliance on these devices. Psychological factors wield significant influence on individual behavior, particularly among adolescents who navigate a blend of rational and social-reactive pathways in decision-making. Therefore, this paper employs the Prototype Willingness Model (PWM) to scrutinize psychological determinants of students' cell phone use while walking, drawing on data from 368 valid samples. Structural equation modeling (SEM) dissects the impact of psychological constructs on this behavior, highlighting the significance of both the social response and reasoning pathways within PWM. The study comprehensively analyzes direct, indirect, and overall effects of exogenous variables on behavioral intention and behavior.

Abstract:With the development of science and technology, smartphones are widely used in people’s daily lives. An interesting phenomenon is that many pedestrians use smartphones while walking in the public places, which not only harm and even kill in some cases, but also affect the pedestrian traffic safety. At present, most studies focus on the pedestrians in the normal state that they don’t use phones while walking. Few research has been done on the pedestrian flow when they use phones. Therefore, the experiment that the pedestrians use phones while walking in straight corridor was conducted to study the movement characteristics and compared with the normal one. From the trajectories, the lane formation can be found in all experiments and the trajectories when they use phones are more chaotic. When pedestrians distract themselves by using phones, they walk more slowly and the flow is lower, leading to the longer egress time to pass the corridor. The distance from the boundary is defined as the shortest distance between the pedestrians and the wall. When they use phones, they try to avoid collision with the wall and walk away from the wall, so the distance is further than the normal one. The nearest pedestrian distance is defined as the nearest distance among all pedestrians. When they use phones, they distract themselves and don’t have enough time to avoid collision with others, so the nearest pedestrians distance is closer than the normal one. Our findings maybe a new insight for pedestrian flow when they distract themselves by using the phones, talking with others and thinking deeply, which can enrich empirical data and contribute to the simulation model.

Abstract:The increasingly ubiquitous use of smartphones has made distracted walking common, not only on flat ground, but also on stairs. Available information regarding changes in gait performance while walking and using a smartphone in different environments is still lacking. We aimed to investigate the differences in gait behavior and subjective walking confidence while walking up and down stairs and escalators, with and without smartphone use. A field experiment involving 32 female adults was conducted at a subway station. Gait parameters collected included step frequency, acceleration root mean square, step variability, step regularity, and step symmetry. The results showed that walking task, walking environment, and walking direction significantly affected gait performance and walking confidence. Overall, playing games or texting while walking down escalators resulted in the lowest walking confidence and the largest gait performance decrement: slower step frequency; reduced root mean square; decreased step regularity and step symmetry; and increased step variability. Step frequency, step variability, and step regularity significantly correlated with walking confidence. Smartphone use while walking on stairs and escalators significantly affects gait behavior and might increase the risk of falls. Interventions and prevention are needed to increase safety education and hazard warnings for the general population.

Abstract:Users around the world have embraced new generation of mobile devices such as the smartphones at a remarkable rate. These devices are equipped with powerful communication and computation capabilities and they enable a wide range of exciting location-based services, e.g., location based ads, content prefetching etc. Many of these services can benefit from a better understanding of the smartphone user mobility, which may differ significantly from the general user mobility. Hence, previous works on understanding user mobility models and predicting user mobility may not directly apply to smartphone users. To overcome this, in this paper we analyze data from two popular location based social networks, where the users are real smartphone users and the places they check-in represent the typical locations where they use their smartphone applications. Specifically, we analyze how individual users move across different locations. We identify several factors that affect user mobility and their relative significance. We then leverage these factors to perform individual mobility prediction. We further show that our mobility prediction yields significant benefit to two important location based applications: content prefetching and shared ride recommendation.

Abstract:Introduction : Pedestrians are a particularly vulnerable group of road users. Mobile phone usage while walking (MPUWW) is a significant contributor to pedestrians' involvement in road crashes and associated injuries. The current study aims to explore the effect of state mindfulness on daily MPUWW via phone dependence (at the within-person level), and the moderating role of risk perception (at the between-person level) in the phone dependence-MPUWW relationship. Method : We utilized a fine-grained method, the daily diary methodology (DDM) to explore the aforementioned model. A total of 88 Chinese college students participated in a consecutive 12-day study, yielding 632 daily data. Unconflated multilevel modeling was used to analyze the data. Results : After trait mindfulness being controlled, state mindfulness has a negative impact on MPUWW via phone dependence at the daily level. Furthermore, risk perception as an individual difference variable moderates the relationship between phone dependence and MPUWW, in which a weaker effect observed in individuals with higher levels of risk perception. Conclusions : State mindfulness can decrease the frequency of daily MPUWW by reducing phone dependence, and risk perception is a crucial factor in mitigating the negative effects of phone dependence on MPUWW. Practical applications : To lower MPUWW and thereby minimize the risk of road crashes and associated injuries, it is beneficial to foster present-moment awareness of individuals, encourage individuals to use mobile phones in a balanced and sensible manner, and integrate the enhancement of risk perception into road safety education.

Abstract:Distraction, primarily owing to the widespread use of cell phones and mobile devices while walking, is a contributing factor to pedestrian injuries. Pedestrians distracted by smartphones exhibit decreased situational awareness, influenced by the nature of concurrent tasks. However, little is known about the neural correlations between smartphone use and pedestrian responses to safety–critical events in a walking environment. This study recruited 30 young adults to investigate pedestrians' ability to selectively respond to road objects while using smartphones (texting and reading) while walking in an immersive virtual environment system. The level of traffic complexity for the road conditions was manipulated by varying the number of safety–critical road objects coexisting in the environment at any given time and the number of required responses to the number of objects. During each 7-min task condition, cerebral oxygenation was measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy. Furthermore, smartphone task performance, response times to road objects, and perceived workload were also measured. The participants exhibited reduced texting speed and reading performance when responding sequentially to coexisting road objects. Compared with other road conditions, those requiring two responses to four objects resulted in an increased workload and longer object response times. Participants perceived a higher workload in conditions involving tasks with smartphones than those without smartphones. More importantly, increased concentrations of oxygenated hemoglobin in the prefrontal cortex were observed when participants were concurrently performing smartphone and pedestrian tasks. Compared to smartphone reading, smartphone texting induced greater cerebral oxygenation in the bilateral frontopolar cortex. These results suggest that continuously texting while walking may demand additional cognitive resources for executive function. The findings of this study represent an initial step towards elucidating the cognitive mechanisms underlying attentional impairments experienced during smartphone distraction and working towards a viable solution to mitigate pedestrian risk.

Abstract:Mobile Media &Communication, Ahead of Print. This study investigates the influence of smartphone use on the embodied experiences of pedestrians in urban public spaces. Participants in this study engaged in leisure walks in a bustling urban environment. The study employed a multi-sensory, multi-modal data collection approach, which incorporated mobile eye tracking, screen capture, think-aloud, and participant data review. Findings revealed dynamic relationships between the urban pedestrians' embodied experiences ("streets as experienced through the body"), digital content ("streets on the screen"), and spatial knowledge ("streets in the mind"). The study explored the "unfolding" practice between multiple versions of the surrounding environment and sheds light on the complex interplay of cognitive, experiential, and digital inputs in shaping pedestrian actions. Moreover, the study uncovers the paradoxical effects of smartphone usage and introduces both serendipity and familiarity into the pedestrian's journey through public spaces. Further, the implications of this research highlight the need for mobile media studies to embrace "messy" and "noisy" data for a more comprehensive understanding of the interconnections between minds, bodies, places, and mobilities.

User Walking Speed and Standing Posture Influence Head/Neck Flexion and Viewing Behavior While Using a Smartphone

Abstract:The habit of using smartphones while walking has become widespread among modern individuals, particularly when pedestrians are in a hurry. However, there has been little exploration into the differences between standing and walking at various speeds in terms of smartphone use. In this study, we examined 60 young participants (30 men and 30 women) who engaged in smartphone tasks such as one-handed browsing or two-handed texting while standing, walking slowly, and walking normally. The measured variables included neck flexion (NF), head flexion (HF), gaze angle (GA), and viewing distance (VD). The study findings indicate that using smartphones while walking may cause a more pronounced kyphotic curve in the cervical spine compared to when standing, leading to increased strain in the neck region. The heightened neck load can be attributed to the concurrent dynamic nature of both walking and smartphone usage. Moreover, two-handed texting had a more detrimental impact on NF, HF, and GA when contrasted with one-handed browsing. The interplay among hand operation, posture, and maintaining arm position displayed an uncertain correlation with VD. While women typically exhibited smaller NF, HF, and GA than men, it is important to explore whether their shorter VD might contribute to increased eyestrain.

Prevalence and perceptions of cell phone use while walking in high school students

Abstract:Background: The World Health Organization pointed out that in 2015, road traffic injuries were the first cause of death for children and adolescents aged 10 to 19 and one of the main causes of death for boys aged 10 to 14, resulting in the death of more than 110,000 children and adolescents. In the world, 38% of the children injured or killed on the roads are pedestrians every year. According to the blue book on Internet use and reading practice among Chinese minors (2017-2018), the overall penetration rate of Internet use among surveyed minors reached 98.1% by the end of 2017. The research report on road traffic injuries of children in China shows that most middle school students use electronic devices frequently when walking, which results in their distraction, thus affecting their personal safety. A large number of foreign literatures have proved that distracted walking can significantly increase the incidence of all kinds of dangerous behaviors of pedestrians, and the number of emergency cases caused by distracted walking with mobile phones and other electronic devices is on the rise. The use of electronic devices during walking has become an important factor threatening the safety of pedestrians. The aim of the present research is to investigate the current situation of cell phone use by high school students while walking, the occurrence of dangerous behaviors and the promotion factors, analyze the characteristics of high school students distracted walking, and provide guidance for targeted intervention. Methods: A total of 1,777 students from six senior high schools in Shanghai were selected for online questionnaire survey in December 2018 by convenience sampling. The questionnaire included basic demographic information and information related to distract walking. Results: In different road environments and walking states, the cell phones were most frequently used when waiting for traffic lights and in the residential roads, and 21.3% of students often, frequently or always used mobile phones in these two situations. Listening to music or e-books was the main use of mobile phones when walking, and 27.3% of students often, frequently or always listened to music when walking. The information acquisition (navigation, etc.) was the most important promotion factor, with an average degree of influence of 4.38 (total score of 7). 54.1% of the students had some dangerous behaviors such as not paying attention to traffic lights and road conditions due to using mobile phones, and 41.7% of the students reported that the occurrence of sprained feet, tripping and collisions in the past was related to distract walking. In terms of the impact of different ways of using mobile phones on travel safety, the score of playing games (5.67) was about twice as high as that of listening to music (3.23) (the total score is 7). Conclusion: At present, high school students' distracted walking phenomenon is serious. It is very important to understand the factors influencing the use of mobile phones by students while walking, to carry out the set of school education, parents' education, peer education and social education as one of the pedestrian safety education, and to strengthen students' awareness of the dangers of distracted walking.
Analysis of Flooding DoS Attacks Utilizing DNS Name Error Queries

Abstract:The Domain Name System (DNS) is a critical Internet infrastructure that provides name to address mapping services. In the past decade, Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks have targeted the DNS infrastructure and threaten to disrupt this critical service. While the flooding DoS attacks may be alleviated by the DNS caching mechanism, we show in this paper that flooding DoS attacks utilizing name error queries is capable of bypassing the cache of resolvers and thereby impose overwhelming flooding attacks on the name servers. We analyze the impacts of such DoS attacks on both name servers and resolvers, which are further illustrated by May 19 China’s DNS Collapse. We also propose the detection and defense approaches for protecting DNS servers from such DoS attacks. In the proposal, the victim zones and attacking clients are detected through monitoring the number of corresponding responses maintained in the negative cache. And the attacking queries can be mitigated by the resolvers with a sample proportion adaptive to the percent of queries for the existent domain names. We assess risks of the DoS attacks by experimental results. Measurements on the request rate of DNS name server show that this kind of attacks poses a substantial threat to the current DNS service.
The impact of smartphone use on gait in young adults: Cognitive load vs posture of texting

Abstract:Many researches have reported that the use of smartphones has a negative impact on gait variability and speed of pedestrians by dispersion of cognition, but the influence of factors other than cognitive function on gait is still unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of smartphone use on spatiotemporal gait parameters in healthy young people while walking. 42 healthy young adults were recruited and instructed to walk in four conditions (walking without using a smartphone, typing on a smartphone with both hands, typing on a smartphone with one hand, and texting posture with non-task). All spatiotemporal gait parameters were measured using the GAITRite walkway. Compared to walking without using a smartphone, the subjects walked with a slower cadence and velocity and changed stride length and gait cycle and spent more time in contact with the ground when using a smartphone (p < 0.05). In addition, even if a texting posture was taken without performing a task, a similar change was observed when using a smartphone (p < 0.05). This study found that a cautious gait pattern occurred due to smartphone use, and that a change in gait appeared just by taking a posture without using smartphone.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to assess the relationships between college campus walking route characteristics and student perceptions of them with smartphone use. The study used student sketch maps, survey questionnaires, and observations and measurements of route features on a Korean urban campus. The results show that the pedestrian perception and evaluation of campus walking routes are impacted differently in two conditions: walking with smartphone use and walking without smartphone use. “Smartphone walkers” found the safety and quality of routes more important, while walkers without phones considered the shortest distance and positive walking experience to be important factors in their route choices. Campus-built environments need to be improved to provide more adaptive solutions to respond to changes in pedestrian behavior and perception due to increased “smartphone walking”. Recommendations include a walker-friendly campus with well-connected streets and networks, separation from vehicles (ensuring safety), good quality sidewalks, and increased campus green space.

Abstract:Objective: The present study aims to: 1) determine whether the risks associated with distracted walking are influenced by walking environment by estimating the incidence and severity of phone-related distracted walking injuries; and 2) investigate individuals' perceptions of distracted walking risk within different walking environments to understand whether individuals are aware of the potential risks and the manner in which they understand those risks. Background: Distracted walking has been increasingly considered a public safety issue over the past few years. Research has focused on understanding the many factors that may influence pedestrians' engagement with smart-devices in order to address this issue. Risk perception may be one factor that guides engagement decisions but has not been widely studied in the context of distracted walking. Risk perception and the consequences of distracted walking are likely to be impacted by the walking environment, however, current research has typically focused on a subset of locations- streets and intersections. Method: This study used the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), a national database of injuries due to consumer products, to understand the number and severity of distracted walking injuries and locations where it occurred. Phone related injury cases from 2011 to 2019 were extracted and categorized by two independent raters in terms of cause of injury and location of injury. An online questionnaire, N = 207, was used to understand how individuals' perception of risk in five different walking environments (intersections, stairwells, hallways, pedestrian plazas, and parking lots) were related to distraction engagement. Risk perception was measured through three different framings: risk of distracted walking (i.e., overall risk of engaging with the behavior), risk of collision and risk of falls (e.g., risks associated with the consequences of engaging with the behavior). Results: The NEISS analysis showed an upward trend of distracted walking injuries from 2011 (2184 incidents) to 2019 (4711 incidents) and that the number of injuries differed across the different walking environments. The survey results showed that individuals varied their risk perception levels (risk of distracted walking, collision, and falls) based on the walking environment and distraction status (distraction and no distraction). The relationship between overall risk of distracted walking and the risks of the different consequences (falls & collision) differed by walking environment. Finally, significant negative correlations were found between risk perception and actual distraction engagement for each location.
An Exploratory Research on the Correlation Between Screen Time and Walking

Abstract:With the revolution of information technology greatly changing contemporary’s lifestyle, smartphone becomes a necessity to more and more people, and individuals’ screen time is increasing as people are spending more time on the virtual world. Through literature review, this paper proposes a hypothesis that there is a correlation between smartphone screen time and walking step counts, which is verified through an exploratory research: data of walking step counts and screen usage were widely collected by online and onsite questionnaires, and the analyses reveal that 1) when daily screen time ranges from 4.99 to 15.25 hours, it is negatively correlated with daily walking step counts; 2) the respondents’ average daily screen time is 6.3 hours, more of which (2.8 hours) is spent on social Apps, and their average daily walking step counts are 6,750 (takes nearly 0.8 hour); 3) daily screen time and walking step counts at weekends are less than those on weekdays; 4) people with higher education level, higher income, or younger age use screen less daily; people with higher education level, lower exercise frequency, or younger age walk less daily, so these factors are likely to affect the correlation between daily screen time and daily walking step counts. The correlation of both behaviors and the affecting factors need to be further clarified, and the impact of physical environmental elements on walking also requires more attention.
Effects of Mobile Phone Use on Gait and Balance Control in Young Adults: A Hip-Ankle Strategy

Abstract:Background: This study aimed to derive the effects of walking while using a mobile phone on balance perturbation and joint movement among young adults. Methods: Sixteen healthy college students with no history of brain injury were tested. The participants were asked to walk under four different conditions: (1) walking, (2) browsing, (3) dialing, and (4) texting. Indicators related to balance control and lower limb kinematic/kinetic parameters were analyzed using the continuous relative phase and statistical nonparametric mapping methods. Results: Walking while using a mobile phone slowed participants' gait speed and reduced the cadence, stride length, and step length. The posterior tilt angle (0-14%, 57-99%), torque of the hip flexion (0-15%, 30-35%, 75-100%), and angle of the hip flexion (0-28%, 44-100%) decreased significantly. The activation of biceps femoris and gastrocnemius, hip stiffness, and ankle stiffness increased significantly. This impact on gait significantly differed among three dual tasks: texting > browsing > dialing. Conclusion: Che overlap of walking and mobile phone use affects the gait significantly. The "hip-ankle strategy" may result in a "smooth" but slower gait, while this strategy was deliberate and tense. In addition, this adjustment also increases the stiffness of the hip and ankle, increasing the risk of fatigue. Findings regarding this effect may prove that even for young healthy adults, walking with mobile phone use induces measurable adjustment of the motor pattern. These results suggest the importance of simplifying the control of the movement.
Analysis of waiting time perception of bus passengers provided with mobile service

Abstract:<p>Smartphones and relevant mobile service have greatly influenced people's daily lives, and intense smartphone users can be commonly seen at transit stops/stations, playing with their smartphones while waiting for buses/trains. This research presents a holistic perspective for analyzing the effects of smartphone usage on transit passengers, which also considers the effects at a psychological level. Such effects may be manifested as the reduction of perceived waiting time at stops/stations against the negative emotionality induced by long waiting, such as boredom and tediousness, so as to result in improved travel experience. An on-site survey is designed and implemented over the bus system in Taipei, Taiwan, to collect the revealed responses of bus passengers in regard to waiting time perception and smartphone usage, particularly for travel-irrelevant mobile service. The survey data are modeled and analyzed in both numerical and verbal representation of perceived waiting time by using a multiple linear regression model and a cumulative proportional odds logistic model, respectively. A finite mixture model is further employed to investigate the potential heterogeneity of waiting time perception related to using smartphones for travel-irrelevant mobile service. The analysis results highlight that travel-irrelevant smartphone usage may lead to the reduction of perceived waiting, and the effect can be more significant for young passengers and those without receiving bus arrival information, especially when waiting time is prolonged. Such findings can contribute to the comprehensive consideration of passenger behavior in transit system planning and associated information/service provision strategies.</p>
