Abstract:There is a great need, but not yet available, for quantitative transformation models and influencing factors of exogenous hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in soil for environmental risk assessment and regulation. Therefore, the transformation processes of exogenous Cr(VI) in 13 soils across China were investigated. The changes in Cr forms in soils spiked with 100 mg kg-1 of Cr(VI) over 90-120 days indicate that both the reduction and immobilization of Cr(VI) occurred with the decrease in availability of Cr(VI) and its reduced counterpart Cr(III). In these processes, soil pH is the controlling factor and pH 6.5 is a critical inflection, where pH < 6.5 promoted the Cr(VI) transformation and decreased the Cr availability. A two-parameter model with a complementary error function for the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) using soil pH and incubation time was developed with the regression coefficient (R2) of 0.98 and root-mean-square-error (RMSE) of 7.94 %, which was validated using data from other independent literature. This semi-mechanistic model suggests that diffusion process of electrons controlled the Cr(VI) reduction. These results are helpful for understanding the Cr(VI) evolution in soil in a long term and complementing the risk assessment of redox-sensitive metal contaminated soils.
Ecological risk threshold for chromium in Chinese soils and its prediction models

Abstract:The derivation of chromium (Cr) ecological risk thresholds in soils remains limited, despite their importance as measurement standards and indicators for enacting soil protection policies. In this study, toxicity of Cr in soil to different species was tested based on Log-Logistic dose-effect relationship. On this basis, combined with Cr toxicity measurement data in literature, the ecological risk threshold HC5 for protecting 95% species safety in soils with different properties was obtained by fitting species sensitivity distribution curve (SSD). This research collected various Cr toxicological data from Chinese cropland soils, based on 31 different endpoints covering soil fauna, functional indicators of microorganisms, terrestrial plants, etc., sourced from both our laboratory and existing literature. We applied the SSD method to estimate the hazardous concentration of Cr for HC5 and ultimately established a predictive model according to HC5 and different soil properties. As a result, the EC10 (an effective concentration of Cr resulting in 10% suppression of terminal biological activity) based on 7 different soils and 4 endpoints ranged from 16.8 to 148.0 mg kg-1, and the hormesis of Cr induction reached up to 109%. Overall, the toxicity (EC10) to microorganisms was much lower, while it was higher for graminoids. All the toxicity data were corrected through an aging factor with up to 540 days of equilibration before fitting the SSD curves. After that, a prediction model considering HC5 values and soil properties was established as LogHC5 = 3.003LogpH +0.651LogOC +0.013LogCEC - 0.476. The model was well-verified in field experiments, as the actual and predicted values fell within a 2-fold error range. This approach offers a rigorous scientific foundation for determining the Cr ecological risk threshold and could be important for the conservation of ecological species in soils.
Ecotoxicity of hexavalent chromium [Cr (VI)] in soil presents predominate threats to agricultural production with the increase of soil Cr contamination

Abstract:The relative severity between chromium (Cr)-mediated ecotoxicity and its bioaccumulation has rarely been compared and evaluated. This study employed pot incubation experiments to simulate the soil environment with increased Cr pollution and study their effects on the growth of crops, including pepper, lettuce, wheat, and rice. Results showed that increasing total Cr presented ascendant ecotoxicity in upland soils when pH > 7.5, and significantly reduced the yield of pepper, lettuce and wheat grain by 0.3-100 %, whereas, this effect was weakened even reversed as the pH decreased. Surprisingly, a series of soils with Cr concentration of 22.7-623.5 mg kg-1 did not cause Cr accumulation in four crops over the Chinese permissible limit. The toxicity of Cr was highly associated with extractable Cr, where Cr (VI) made the greater contributions than Cr (III). Conclusively, the ecotoxicity of Cr poses a greater environmental issue as compared to the bioaccumulation of Cr in crops in upland soils, while extractable Cr (VI) makes the predominant contributions to the ecotoxicity of Cr as the total Cr increased. Our study proposes a synchronous consideration involving total Cr and Cr (VI) as the theoretical basis to establish a more reliable soil quality standard for safe production in China.
Effects of aging and reduction processes on Cr toxicity to wheat root elongation in Cr(VI) spiked soils

Abstract:The bioavailability of chromium (Cr) in soils is highly dependent on Cr fractions and soil physicochemical properties, but it is still unclear how the Cr fractions change in different soils. In this study, phytotoxicity to wheat root elongation was evaluated in different soils across China, and the kinetics of the biogeochemical processes of the added Cr(VI) were examined. After 105 days of soil Cr(VI) spiking, the added Cr(VI) causing 10% inhibition (EC10) of wheat root elongation varied greatly in soils (0.92-151.12 mg kg-1). The results of correlation analysis between EC10 and soil properties showed that the toxicity of Cr was affected by pH, organic matter (OM), clay, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and amorphous Fe oxides. Moreover, the correlation analysis showed that wheat root elongation was more sensitive to extracted Cr(VI) than Cr(III) after 105 days of incubation. A kinetic model was established to evaluate the redox and aging-activating reactions of Cr(VI)/(III) over 105 days. The correlation analysis between the soil properties and rate constants of the model showed that the pH, clay, and amorphous Fe/Al oxides might be the key factors controlling the aging and reduction processes of Cr(VI), and the OM and CEC might greatly affect the aging process of Cr(III). This modeling study is helpful in understanding which soil properties control the transformation and toxicity of Cr in soils.

Phytotoxicity of individual and binary mixtures of rare earth elements (Y, La, and Ce) in relation to bioavailability

Abstract:Rare earth elements (REEs) are typically present as mixtures in the environment, but a quantitative understanding of mixture toxicity and interactions of REEs is still lacking. Here, we examined the toxicity to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) of Y, La, and Ce when applied individually and in combination. Both concentration addition (CA) and independent action (IA) reference models were used for mixture toxicity analysis because the toxicity mechanisms of REEs remain obscure. Upon single exposure, the EC50s of Y, La, and Ce, expressed as dissolved concentrations, were 1.73 ± 0.24 μM, 2.59 ± 0.23 μM, and 1.50 ± 0.22 μM, respectively. The toxicity measured with relative root elongation followed La < Y ≈ Ce, irrespective of the dose descriptors. The use of CA and IA provided similar estimates of REE mixture interactions and toxicity. When expressed as dissolved metal concentrations, nearly additive effects were observed in Y-La and La-Ce mixtures, while antagonistic interactions were seen in Y-Ce mixtures. When expressed as free metal activities, antagonistic interactions were found for all three binary mixtures. This can be explained by a competitive effect of REEs ions for binding to the active sites of plant roots. The application of a more elaborate MIXTOX model in conjunction with the free ion activities, which incorporates the non-additive interactions and bioavailability-modifying factors, well predicted the mixture toxicity (with >92% of toxicity variations explained). Our results highlighted the importance of considering mixture interactions and subsequent bioavailability in assessing the joint toxicity of REEs.
A Case of Acute Catarrhal Conjunctivitis Due to Branhamella catarrhalis

Abstract:Neisseria species and Branhamella catarrha/is are classified in the Family Neis seriaceae (19), along with Moraxella and Acinetobacter. Members of both genera are similar in their morphology and limited metabolic activity, but differ in their genetic similarity. In fact, studies (2) of mole percent guanine and cytosine base composition and deoxyribonucleic acid homology have indicated that B. catarrha/is is obviously distinct from Neisseria species. In recent years, B. catarrha/is has been reported as the causative agent of diverse infectious diseases, e.g, otitis media (3, 8, 9), maxillary sinusitis (12), purulent bronchitis (12), pneumonia (Il, 13-15), and empyema (4, II). However, to our knowledge, ophthalmological infections due to this microorganism have rarely been described. We report here a case of conjunctivitis caused by B. catarrha/is in Japan. On May 24, 1982, a previously healthy 58-year-old afebrile Japanese female was admitted to our hospital with a 2-week history of excessive discharge from both eyes, particularly in the evening. Inspection of her eyes disclosed conjunctival congestion without follicular or papillary hypertrophy. She displayed no visual disturbance, i.e., her visual acuity was 1.0, bilaterally. The discharge was taken with sterile cotton swabs for bacteriological examination, and administration of tobramycin eye-drops was started on admission. The specimen was immediately streaked onto four kinds of media, i.e., Heart infusion agar (Eiken, Tokyo) with 5% sheep blood, Chocolate agar containing 7.5% horse blood added to Heart infusion agar (Eiken, Tokyo), modified Drigalski agar (Eiken, Tokyo) and Sabouraud glucose agar (Nissui, Tokyo) with 50 pg/ml of chloramphenicol; the plates were incubated aerobically at 35 C for 20 hr. After incubation, the blood agar and the Chocolate agar plates yielded numerous uniform growth of non-pigmented, opaque, smooth and flattened colonies with a diameter of about I mm. No other colonies could be found on the plates. On both the Drigalski and the Sabouraud glucose agar plates, no visible colonies appeared. Gram's stain of the colonies revealed that they were gram-negative cocci or diplo cocci which were reminiscent of Neisseria species. Probing the Single and Combined Toxicity of PFOS and Cr(VI) to Soil Bacteria and the Interaction Mechanisms.

Abstract:Many research focused on the removal of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in some industrial wastewater (e.g. electroplating wastewater), but few research reported the combined toxicity of PFOS and Cr(VI) to soil bacteria. Therefore, the toxicity and mechanisms of the combined PFOS and Cr(VI) to bacteria (with Bacillus subtilis as a model) are explored. The results show that the combined PFOS and Cr(VI) exhibits much higher toxicity to the bacteria than that of Cr(VI) alone. The growth profile of Bacillus subtilis exposed by the combined pollution decreased by 18% and 56%, respectively, compared with that of single Cr(VI) and the control, indicating the combined toxicity to Bacillus subtilis is synergistic. Moreover, the changes of EPSs in Bacillus subtilis, such as decreased potential, increased extracellular polysaccharides, decreased extracellular proteins and irregular morphology, also confirmed that the combined PFOS and Cr(VI) caused greater toxicity. The increase of intracellular ROS and permeability of dye 4', 6-diamidino-2-phenylindoledihydrochloride (DAPI) suggest that oxidative damage and increased membrane permeability are the main mechanisms of toxicity induced by the combined PFOS and Cr(VI). This work could provide useful information for the risk assessment of co-exposure to PFOS and heavy metals in the natural environment.
Chromium Distribution, Leachability and Speciation in a Chrome Plating Site

Abstract:Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) waste produced by chrome plating activities pollutes the surrounding environment and harms human health. However, information about the chromium (Cr) pollution characteristics of actual electroplating sites is still lacking. In this study, the concentration, leachability and speciation of Cr in soils from a typical chrome plating site were analyzed. Our results showed that this site was severely contaminated by Cr (7.2 to 7735.2 mg/kg) and Cr(VI) reached the mean concentration of 138.7 mg/kg. The spatial distribution of Cr(VI) was related to the plating processes. Chrome plating and sewage treatment areas could be considered as the hot spots of contaminated sites. The vertical distribution of Cr(VI) was mainly affected by soil properties, where the loam layer retained and reduced a large amount of Cr(VI) due to its high content of iron minerals and finer particle fractions. Additionally, the chemical extraction results showed that Cr was mainly in non-residual fractions and the existence of Cr(VI) led to a high leaching toxicity based on the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) results. Moreover, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results revealed the speciation of Cr in the long-term contaminated soils. A large amount of Cr(VI) was reduced into Cr(III) and mainly existed as Cr(OH)3 and Cr2O3. Furthermore, Cr(VI) tended to precipitate as CaCrO4 and persisted in soils. Therefore, it is necessary to find appropriate strategies to remediate these contaminated soils. Overall, these findings strengthen our understanding of Cr(VI) behaviors and lay a foundation for the future pollution investigation, ecological remediation and risk assessment of sites contaminated by electroplating.
Insights into the evolution of Cr(VI) species in long-term hexavalent chromium contaminated soil

Abstract:Compare to the content of Cr(VI), the distribution of specific Cr(VI) species in soil is rarely paid attention to, which may lead to an inaccurate environmental risk assessment of Cr(VI) contaminated soil or inability to meet stringent requirement for soil remediation. Herein, to reveal the primary mechanisms and factors controlling the evolution of Cr(VI) species in soil, the distribution of Cr(VI) and Cr(III) species in soils with different particle sizes and textures was systematically investigated by using a modified sequential extraction procedure and spectroscopy characterizations (e.g., SEM-EDS mapping). The results show that a significant proportion of Cr(VI) can be captured by minerals containing exchangeable calcium ions and metal oxide hydrates in the soil, forming a relatively stable adsorbed Cr(VI). Also, a small fraction of Cr(VI) can precipitate as calcium chromate with free calcium ion which is the most stable Cr(VI) species in the soil. The majority of Cr(VI) discharged into soil tends to be reduced by ferrous ions or minerals containing ferrous ions with a product of Fe(III)-Cr(III) coprecipitate. Therefore, the speciation of Cr in the soil is closely correlated to Fe and Ca. After the equilibrium of adsorption, precipitation, and reduction reactions of Cr(VI), the rest of Cr(VI) retains as the form of its original water-soluble state in soil. The evolution of Cr(VI) species and the content of specific Cr species in soil are mainly determined by the contents of iron, exchangeable calcium ions and metal oxide hydrates, which effect the Cr(VI) reduction, precipitation and adsorption, respectively.

Abstract:Soil contamination with potentially toxic element such as chromium (Cr) poses a threat to the environment and human health. The environmental toxicity of Cr is related not only to the total Cr content but also to the distribution of Cr fractions. In this study, laboratory simulation experiments were conducted to explore the characteristics of Cr fractions and responses of the functional microbial community during dynamic leaching and static drying processes. The results showed that acid-soluble Cr and reducible Cr transformed into other relatively stable fractions under dry conditions, and ammonium nitrogen promoted the transformation. Nitrate-nitrogen was significantly positively correlated with Cr fractions in the wet stage ( p < 0.05), while ammonium nitrogen showed the same relation in the dry process. Analysis of the microbial community showed that the bacterial and fungal genera Flavihumibacter, Altererythrobacter, Methylobacillus, Flavisolibacter, Lysobacter, and Cladosporium were related to the Cr fractions (acid-soluble Cr, reducible Cr, and oxidizable Cr) under wet conditions, while the microbial genera Ellin6067, MND1, and Ramlibacter were related to Cr fractions under dry conditions. Moreover, the proliferation of the functional microbial genera Methylobacillus, Ellin6067, and MND1 related to Cr fractions in the wet–dry conversion process alleviated the environmental toxicity of Cr. These findings provide useful information for the remediation of Cr-contaminated soils by monitoring the distribution fractions of Cr and the functional microbial community under wet–dry conditions.

Abstract:Chromium (Cr) contamination has been of great concern in agricultural soil health due to its persistence, toxicity and bioaccumulation. Fungi, as an essential regulator of soil remediation and biochemical processes, had an unclear response to Cr contamination. In this study, the composition, diversity and interaction mechanisms of fungal communities in agricultural soils from ten different provinces of China were investigated in order to elucidate the fungal community response to varying soil properties and Cr concentrations. The results showed that high concentrations of Cr led to substantial alterations in the fungal community composition. The complex soil properties had a far greater impact on the fungal community structure than the single factor of Cr concentration, with soil available phosphorus (AP) and pH being most influential. Function predictions based on FUNGuild indicated that high concentrations of Cr have a significant impact on certain functional groups of fungi, including mycorrhizal fungi and plant saprotroph. The fungal community tended to resist Cr stress by enhancing interactions and clustering among network modules, while generating new keystone taxa. This study allowed insights into the response of soil fungal community to Cr contamination in different agricultural soils from different provinces and provided a theoretical basis for soil Cr ecological risk assessment and the development of bioremediation techniques for Cr-contaminated soils.

The key forms of Chromium influencing the long-term stability of Cr in Cr-contaminated soils and chemical stabilized soils

Abstract:The toxicity and persistence of chromium in soils challenge the ecosystem and human health. Various remediation strategies have been developed to eliminate soil Cr contamination, and the most popular one is chemical stabilization. However, chemical stabilization only changes the form of Cr and does not change the concentration of Cr, so the long-term stability of Cr has been controversial. On the other hand, some researches found that the concentration of Cr(VI) in the stabilized soil after remediation has increased. We collected Cr-contaminated soils and one-year-stabilized soils from four research sites in northern, central, and southwestern China, trying to understand the difference of Cr species and structure in soils with various soil properties. Results showed despite the different clay content and mineral composition, all contaminated and stabilized soils are alkaline (pH 7.36 ~ 10.5). In addition, there are differences in the pollution levels of Cr and Cr (VI) in soils. In northern China, Cr(VI) was the main state of Cr-contaminated soils; however, Cr is mainly present in Cr-contaminated soil in the form of Cr(III) in southern China. For chemical stabilized soils, Cr concentrations remained similar to Cr-contaminated soils (1500~9000 mg/kg), but the concentration of Cr(VI) (5~55 mg/kg) was reduced through commercial remediation materials. The speciation of Cr in Cr-contaminated soils transformed from exchangeable Cr and Cr bound to carbonates into Cr bound to Fe-oxides and residuals in stabilized soils. SEM-EDS, XAFS and μ-XRF results revealed the main forms and structure of Cr, and showed Cr unevenly distributed on the surface or edge of the mineral. The acid leaching test revealed that Cr(VI) could be released from Cr-contaminated soils by acid, and soils can release Cr(VI) under different acidity conditions. Cr(VI) from soils collected from northern and southern China was released from acidity of [H+]=0.1M and [H+]=0.5M, respectively. This was due to erosion of coating minerals or Cr(VI)-bearing minerals. Our study suggested that stabilization technology not only reduces the toxicity of chromium, improves the stability of chromium, but also partially recovers the physical and chemical properties of soil. Meanwhile, in future remediation projects, it is necessary to consider the existing forms of chromium in different soils to develop remediation strategies.
Chromium-Resistant Bacteria Promote the Reduction of Hexavalent Chromium in Soils

Abstract:Knowledge of the chromium (Cr) redox process in soil is important in addressing Cr bioavailability and risk assessment of contaminated soils. In this study, seven representative agricultural soils with different physicochemical properties were used to investigate the importance of microbially mediated Cr(VI) reduction and the response of soil bacterial community to Cr contamination. Chromium application increased soil bacterial diversity in Periudic Argosols, Calcaric Regosols, Stagnic Anthrosols, Mollisols, Typic Haplustalfs, and Ustic Cambosols, with an exception of Udic Ferrisols. The soil bacterial community responded to Cr contamination through changes in bacterial community structure, with Cr-resistant bacteria becoming the dominant species, and the percentage of Cr-resistant bacteria of total cultivable bacteria was 89.9, 75.2, 92.8, 65.3, 72.8, 77.3, and 65.4%, respectively, for Periudic Argosols, Udic Ferrisols, Calcaric Regosols, Stagnic Anthrosols, Mollisols, Typic Haplustalfs, and Ustic Cambosols. , , , , , , , , , and were identified as the Cr-resistant bacteria. Moreover, our results demonstrated that microbial reduction was an important Cr(VI) reduction pathway, and the relative contribution of microorganisms to Cr(VI) reduction was 14.4, 44.0, 20.6, 34.9, 21.9, 21.7, and 22.0%, respectively for Periudic Argosols, Udic Ferrisols, Calcaric Regosols, Stagnic Anthrosols, Mollisols, Typic Haplustalfs, and Ustic Cambosols. Soil properties, especially Fe(II) and soil particle distribution, affected the microbially mediated Cr(VI) reduction. These results provide useful information for the bioremediation of Cr-contaminated soils under a wide range of environmental conditions.
Reduction kinetics of hexavalent chromium in soils and its correlation with soil properties.

Abstract:The toxicity of chromium (Cr) to biota is related to its chemical forms and consequently to the redox conditions of soils. Hexavalent Cr [Cr(VI)] may undergo natural attenuation through reduction processes. In this study, the reduction kinetics of Cr(VI) in seven soils and its relationships with soil properties were investigated with laboratory incubation experiments. The results indicate that the reduction of Cr(VI) can be described by a first-order reaction. The reduction rates of Cr(VI) in the seven soils decreased in the order: Udic Ferrisols > Stagnic Anthrosols > Calcaric Regosols > Mollisol > Typic Haplustalf > Periudic Argosols > Ustic Cambosols. Simple correlation analysis revealed that the reduction of Cr(VI) in soils was positively related to organic matter content, dissolved organic matter content, Fe(II) content, clay fraction, and to the diversity index of the bacterial community but negatively correlated with easily reducible Mn content. Using stepwise regression, the reduction of Cr(VI) in soil could be quantitatively predicted by the measurement of dissolved organic matter content, Fe(II) content, pH, and soil particle size distribution, with a fitting level of 95.5%. The results indicated that the reduction of Cr(VI) in natural soils is not controlled by a single soil property but is the result of the combined effects of dissolved organic matter, Fe(II), pH, and soil particle size distribution.

Abstract:The groundwater table fluctuation zone is the main interface for contaminants to transport between the unsaturated soil and saturated aquifers which still lacks of concern. In this study, we explored the interactions of Cr(VI) in this specific zone during water table fluctuation through laboratory experiment and numerical modeling. The higher reduction of Cr(VI) was found in the lower soil layer due to the lower Eh at the bottom layer of the unsaturated zone and the Cr(III) concentration increased with rise in water level and fluctuation amplitudes. After twice water fluctuation, nevertheless, there was still about 42.2% Cr retained in the soil and dominantly present as Cr(III) form. The model coupling reaction network with hydrodynamic field showed the cumulative Cr(III) in the unsaturated soil zone had a faster increase at the higher water level rise speed compared with lower rise speed. The cumulative Cr(VI) decreases over time in the saturated aquifers, whereas the cumulative Cr(III) increased with the increase of fluctuation amplitude. Reduction of Cr(VI) into Cr(III) was accompanied with Fe(II) and organic carbon oxidation. The results indicate that the hydrodynamic conditions have impacts on the redox environment of soil which could further affect the transformation and transport of Cr.

Abstract:In recent decades, environmental pollution with chromium (Cr) has gained significant attention. Although chromium (Cr) can exist in a variety of different oxidation states and is a polyvalent element, only trivalent chromium [Cr(III)] and hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] are found frequently in the natural environment. In the current review, we summarize the biogeochemical procedures that regulate Cr(VI) mobilization, accumulation, bioavailability, toxicity in soils, and probable risks to ecosystem are also highlighted. Plants growing in Cr(VI)-contaminated soils show reduced growth and development with lower agricultural production and quality. Furthermore, Cr(VI) exposure causes oxidative stress due to the production of free radicals which modifies plant morpho-physiological and biochemical processes at tissue and cellular levels. However, plants may develop extensive cellular and physiological defensive mechanisms in response to Cr(VI) toxicity to ensure their survival. To cope with Cr(VI) toxicity, plants either avoid absorbing Cr(VI) from the soil or turn on the detoxifying mechanism, which involves producing antioxidants (both enzymatic and non-enzymatic) for scavenging of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Moreover, this review also highlights recent knowledge of remediation approaches i.e., bioremediation/phytoremediation, or remediation by using microbes exogenous use of organic amendments (biochar, manure, and compost), and nano-remediation supplements, which significantly remediate Cr(VI)-contaminated soil/water and lessen possible health and environmental challenges. Future research needs and knowledge gaps are also covered. The review's observations should aid in the development of creative and useful methods for limiting Cr(VI) bioavailability, toxicity and sustainably managing Cr(VI)-polluted soils/water, by clear understanding of mechanistic basis of Cr(VI) toxicity, signaling pathways, and tolerance mechanisms; hence reducing its hazards to the environment.

Transformation of Chromium Speciation during High Hexavalent Chromium-Contaminated Soil Remediation by CPS and Biostimulation

Abstract:To address the secondary pollution problem of chemical reduction and the defects of a long bioremediation period for the soil around a chromium (Cr) salt plant in China, calcium polysulfide (CPS) combined with biostimulation (adding nutrient solution with glucose and urea) was used to reduce and stabilize hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] in the soil. The results showed that the remediation effect of adding CPS and nutrient solution was better than that of CPS alone for Cr(VI)-contaminated soil. An amount of 2.15% CPS with the Cr(VI) concentration reduced to approximately 330.0 mg/kg was selected as the optimal reducing agent dosage. Following the addition of 11 g/kg glucose and 13 g/kg urea, the degradation rate of Cr(VI) reached over 92% after 3 days, and the water-soluble fraction decreased by 95.6% after 40 days. The stability of the Cr was significantly enhanced. The correlation and regression analyses of Cr speciation indicated that the water-soluble fraction had significant negative correlations with the iron-manganese (Fe-Mn) oxide-bound fraction and the organic matter-bound fraction. There were significant negative correlations between the exchangeable fraction and the carbonate-bound fraction as well as extremely significant positive correlations between the Fe-Mn oxide-bound fraction and the organic matter-bound fraction. It was speculated that both the Fe-Mn oxide-bound fraction and the organic matter-bound fraction were transformed from the water-soluble fraction, and the exchangeable fraction and the carbonate-bound fraction were mutually transformed. This study enables us to acquire more knowledge about the speciation transformation of Cr in soil and provides an efficient, low-cost, and low-risk technology for the remediation of high Cr(VI)-contaminated soil.

Abstract:Anthropogenic chromium (Cr) pollution in soils poses a great threat to human health through the food chain. It is imperative to understand Cr phytoavailability to rice (Oryza sativa L.), which is a major staple food crop for the largest population of people on Earth. This study was aimed to establish a model for evaluation of the phytoavailability of Cr to rice in six representative Chinese soils based on soil properties. Simple correlation analysis indicated that Cr concentration in polished rice was significantly correlated with total Cr, Mehlich-3 extractable Cr, and Cr(VI) in soil. Stepwise multiple regression analysis also demonstrated that the Cr phytoavailability was strongly correlated with soil total Cr, Mehlich-3 extractable Cr, Cr(VI) concentration, soil organic matter, Fe(II), and particle size distribution. Critical Cr concentrations in the six soils were evaluated for rice based on the maximum safe level for daily intake of Cr. Mehlich-3 extractable Cr are the most suitable Cr thresholds for Periudic Argosols, Udic Ferrisols, Mollisols, and Ustic Cambosols with values of 1.54, 0.56, 0.42, and 2.18 mg kg(-1), respectively, while Cr(VI) are adequate thresholds for Calcaric Regosols and Stagnic Anthrosols with values of 0.68 and 0.84 mg kg(-1), respectively.
