Abstract:Background: Wildland firefighters (WFFs) regularly face demanding physical and environmental conditions during their duties, such as high ambient temperatures, challenging terrains, heavy equipment and protective gear. These conditions can strain thermoregulatory responses, leading to increased fatigue and posing risks to their health and safety. This study examined the effectiveness of two cooling interventions during physical activity in hot environments. Methods: Eight active male WFFs participated, comparing the effects of wearing a cooling vest (VEST) and personal protective equipment removal (PASSIVE) against a control condition (PPE). Participants walked on a treadmill at a speed of 6 km·h-1 for approximately 75-min under hot conditions (30°C and 30% relative humidity). Incremental slope increases were introduced every 15 min after the initial 20 min of activity, with 5-min passive recovery between each increment. Physiological and perceptual parameters were monitored throughout the protocol. Results: Significant main effects (p < 0.05) were observed in skin temperature (36.3 ± 0.2, 36.2 ± 0.4 and 35.4 ± 0.6°C in PPE, PASSIVE and VEST, respectively), physiological strain index (5.2 ± 0.4, 5.6 ± 1.1 and 4.3 ± 1.4 in PPE, PASSIVE and VEST) and thermal sensation (6.6 ± 0.6, 6.4 ± 0.7 and 5.3 ± 0.7 in PPE, PASSIVE, and VEST). However, no significant effects of the cooling strategies were observed on heart rate, gastrointestinal temperature or performance. Conclusion: Despite the observed effects on physiological responses, neither cooling strategy effectively mitigated thermal strain in WFFs under the experimental conditions tested.

Abstract:Background: In individuals with a spinal cord injury thermoregulatory mechanisms are fully or partially interrupted. This could lead to exercise-induced hyperthermia in temperate conditions which can be even more distinct in hot conditions. Hyperthermia has been suggested to impair physiological mechanisms in athletes, which could negatively influence physical performance and subjective well-being or cause mild to severe health issues. Objective: The aim was to evaluate the literature on the thermoregulatory and thermal responses of individuals with a spinal cord injury during exercise in temperate and hot conditions taking the effects of cooling techniques and heat acclimation into account. Data sources: Two electronic databases, PubMed and Web of Science were searched. Studies were eligible if they observed the influence of exercise on various thermoregulatory parameters (e.g., core and skin temperature, sweat rate, thermal sensation) in individuals with a spinal cord injury. Results: In total 32 articles were included of which 26 were of strong, 3 of moderate and 3 of weak quality. Individuals with a high lesion level, especially those with a tetraplegia, reached a higher core and skin temperature with a lower sweat rate. The use of cooling techniques before and during exercise can positively affect the burden of the impaired thermoregulatory system in all individuals with a spinal cord injury. Conclusion: Due to the absence of normal thermoregulatory abilities, individuals with a high-level spinal cord injury need special attention when they are exercising in temperate and hot conditions to prevent them from potential heat related issues. The use of cooling techniques can reduce this risk.

Experimental study on the effectiveness of the PCM cooling vest in persons with paraplegia of varying levels

Abstract:Persons with paraplegia (PA) from thoracic spinal cord injury (T1-T12) are prone to thermal stress during exercise due to impaired thermoregulation. This study evaluates the effectiveness of phase change material (PCM) cooling vests on persons with PA of different levels of injury during exercise in hot exposure. Sixteen participants were recruited and divided to three groups based on injury level; high-thoracic T1-T3, mid-thoracic T4-T8, and low thoracic T9-T12 to perform a 30-min arm-crank exercise at a 30 °C room condition. Two types of PCM vests at melting temperature of 20 °C were tested: i) V1 with PCM covering the trunk of 3.4 kg overall vest mass and ii) V2 with PCM covering chest and upper back of 2.17 kg overall vest mass. High thoracic and low-thoracic groups performed NV and V1 tests; whereas, mid-thoracic group performed NV, V1, and V2 tests. Heart rate, core, and skin temperatures were monitored during 15-min preconditioning, 30-min exercise, and 15-min recovery. In addition, thermal comfort, sensation, skin wettedness, and perceived exertion were recorded during exercise only. The main findings were that the effectiveness of the cooling vest was dependent on injury level and portion of sensate skin of trunk covered by the PCM packets. Rise in core temperature (ΔTcr) was reduced significantly for the low-thoracic group during exercise and recovery (ΔTcr=0.41°C, 0.26°C for NV and V1; respectively, p<0.05). For the mid-thoracic group, both V1 (p = 0.001) and V2 (p = 0.008) were effective in reducing ΔTcr compared to the NV test at the end of the recovery period (0.74°C,0.42°C,0.56°C, for NV, V1 and V2; respectively). For the high-thoracic group, V1 was not effective in reducing core temperature (p>0.05). For the mid-thoracic group, V2 at 36% lower mass significantly improved thermal comfort (p = 0.0004) compared to the NV test and was as effective compared to V1 in reducing core temperature.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Firefighters operating in hot environments face challenges from protective garments that restrict heat dissipation, resulting in increased core temperature, thermal discomfort, and performance decline. Cooling vests represent a viable solution. The study aim was to compare effectiveness of the same amount of cooling power to the upper body (UB) or whole body (WB) in alleviating thermoregulatory and physiological stress, enhancing cognitive function, and reducing ratings of thermal discomfort and exertion, during 60 min of exercise in a hot environment (40°C, 40% relative humidity) while wearing firefighter turnout gear.METHODS: Eight healthy individuals (27.5 ± 3 y) participated in three conditions with either no cooling (Control) or active cooling with a liquid perfused shirt (UB cooling), or with a liquid perfused shirt and pants (WB cooling). In each trial, subjects performed three sets of 15 min of stepping (20 steps ⋅ min-1) and 5 min of rest.RESULTS: Both cooling strategies were beneficial compared to having no cooling at all. Subjects could only complete two exercise bouts during Control, but they completed all three bouts with active cooling. WB cooling provided an advantage over UB cooling for core and skin temperature, and thermal comfort and sensation. The advantage in minimizing the increase in core temperature was only evident during the third exercise bout.DISCUSSION: Active cooling is advantageous under these conditions. Abstract:The ability to fabricate nanometer-sized structures that are stable in air has the potential to contribute significantly to the advancement of new nanotechnologies and our understanding of nanoscale systems. Laser light can be used to control the motion of atoms on a nanoscopic scale. Chromium atoms were focused by a standing-wave laser field as they deposited onto a silicon substrate. The resulting nanostructure consisted of a series of narrow lines covering 0.4 millimeter by 1 millimeter. Atomic force microscopy measurements showed a line width of 65 � 6 nanometers, a spacing of 212.78 nanometers, and a height of 34 �+ 10 nanometers. The observed line widths and shapes are compared with the predictions of a semiclassical atom optical model.

Abstract:When someone asks the question, how good is ambulatory EEG telemetry, there is no correct answer. There are many manufacturers of ambulatory EEG technology. Each device has its own strengths and weaknesses. What one is really interested in when one asks such a question needs to be defined in terms of expectations and technical capabilities for the piece of equipment under discussion. Systems exist or can be easily modified to be as sophisticated as the best of the inpatient units. However, is that level of sophistication needed for the ambulatory based recordings? Again, the answer to that is dependent on the ordering physician’s expectations. Below is a discussion of the different clinical expectations that are frequently encountered and the needed requirements for an ambulatory system to properly address them.
The effect of passive heating and face cooling on perceived exertion during exercise in the heat

Abstract:Increased body temperature is thought to be an important component of the higher perception of exertion that is a feature of fatigue during exercise in the heat but a causal relationship has yet to be demonstrated. We have investigated the effect of passive heating on the perception of exertion during a standard bout of exercise and also assessed the effect of cooling the head on compensating for the increased body temperature on the feelings of exertion. Ten male subjects performed a 14-min cycling exercise [average power ~63% of maximum power output (Ẇmax)] at an ambient temperature of 35°C at resting rectal temperature [mean (SD): 37.49 (0.27)°C; control (CON) trial] on one occasion, and after sitting in a sauna to raise rectal temperature [mean (SD): 38.95(0.13)°C; sauna (SAU) trial]. During the exercise, subjects reported their ratings of overall perceived exertion (RPE), perceived exertion of the legs (RPElegs) and thermal comfort (TC). A blood sample was collected by the end of the exercise for determination of plasma glucose, lactate and prolactin and haematocrit. RPE values were significantly elevated after passive heating [mean (SE): 14.5 (0.7) units in CON and 17.2 (0.5) units in SAU, at the end of exercise; P<0.001] as were the RPElegs (P<0.01), while ratings of TC were similar in CON and SAU trials. Passive heating increased blood glucose (P<0.05) but had no effect on lactate at the end of the exercise. Plasma prolactin was markedly elevated as a result of the sauna exposure [mean (SE): 1598 (152) versus 225 (31) mU l−1 in SAU and CON trials, respectively; P<0.001]. Six of the subjects repeated the two trials but with the face cooled during exercise (trials CONFAN and SAUFAN) that was achieved by combining face fanning and spraying the face with a mist of cooled water. Face cooling decreased RPE values after sauna to a point that no differences between the two conditions existed. RPElegs scores and heart rate, however, remained higher in SAUFAN compared with CONFAN (P<0.05). We conclude that hyperthermia is a causative element of the increased perception of exertion during submaximal exercise in the heat and that the effect of increased core temperature on the feelings of exertion is modulated by face cooling.

Effect of continuous cooling on inhibition and attention while wearing firefighter's PPE in a hot environment

Abstract:Firefighting is physically and mentally strenuous, requiring rapid, appropriate decision-making in hot environments. Intact cognitive function is imperative to firefighters' effectiveness and safety. The study purpose was to investigate the effect of hyperthermia and the effect of body cooling on sustained attention and response inhibition while wearing firefighters' personal protective ensembles after exercise in a hot environment. Twelve healthy males were recruited to participate in two randomly assigned exercise sessions (walking on a treadmill for 40 min at 40% [Formula: see text] O2max while wearing firefighter's protective ensemble) in a hot environment: control (no cooling) and intervention (cooling). For intervention sessions, a cooling garment was worn underneath firefighter's protective ensemble and infused with 18 °C water supplied by an external water circulator. Participants performed a computerized Go/No-Go (a measure of cognitive function) test three times at baseline and post-exercise for each experimental session. Participants completed baseline testing while wearing cotton athletic clothing. The exercise continued until the core temperature reached ∼39 °C (for all subjects regardless of cooling or non-cooling experimental sessions). Following hyperthermia, participants' physiological responses were significantly increased after exercise. Subjects' reaction time was significantly reduced (improved) after experiencing thermal strain and reaching hyperthermia. The cooling method had a significant impact on suppressing the physiological load, i.e., body cooling delayed the time to reach a Tc of 39 °C (p ≤ 0.05), but not cognitive inhibition and attention (reaction time and accuracy). Unexpectedly, hyperthermia resulted in shorter reaction time following exercise (16.64 ± 5.62; p < 0.03), likely influenced by increased attention/vigilance. Hyperthermia may trigger an acute increase in alertness, causing decreased reaction time.

Abstract:We report a self-aligned coplanar amorphous indium-gallium-zinc-oxide (a-IGZO) thin-film transistor (TFT) using an a-IGZO/SiO2 stack layer. From the channel-length dependence of the total resistance for the TFTs, the channel and parasitic resistances were found to be 8.4 kΩ/μm and 9.7 kΩ/sq, respectively. The fabricated a-IGZO TFT exhibits field-effect mobility of 23.3 cm2/V ·s, threshold voltage of 3.6 V, and gate voltage swing of 203 mV/dec. A 23-stage ring oscillator made of the self-aligned TFTs exhibits a propagation delay time of 17 ns/stage at a supply voltage of 22 V.
Efficacy of cooling vests based on different heat-extraction concepts: The HEAT-SHIELD project

Abstract:Introduction: A wide range of cooling vests for heat-strain mitigation purposes during physical work are available on the market. The decision regarding the optimal cooling vest/concept for a specific environment can be challenging by relying solely on the information provided by the manufacturers. The aim of this study was to investigate how different types of cooling vests would manifest/perform in a simulated industrial setting, in a warm and moderately humid environment with low air velocity. Methods: Ten young males completed six experimental trials, including a control trial (no vest) and five trials with vests of different cooling concepts. Once entering the climatic chamber (ambient temperature: 35 °C, relative humidity: 50 %), participants remained seated for 30 min to induce passive heating, after which they donned a cooling vest and started a 2.5-h of walk at 4.5 km·h-1. During the trial, torso skin temperature (Tsk), microclimate temperature (Tmicro) and relative humidity (RHmicro), as well as core temperature (rectal and gastrointestinal; Tc) and heart rate (HR) were measured. Before and after the walk, participants conducted different cognitive tests and provided subjective ratings throughout the walk. Results: The use of the vests attenuated the increase in HR (103 ± 12 bpm) when compared to control trial (116 ± 17 bpm, p < 0.05). Four vests maintained a lower torso Tsk (31.7 ± 1.5 °C) compared to control trial (36.1 ± 0.5 °C, p < 0.05). Two vests using PCM inserts attenuated the increase in Tc between 0.2 and 0.5 °C in relation to control trial (p < 0.05). Cognitive performance remained unchanged between the trials. Physiological responses were also well reflected in subjective reports. Conclusion: Most vests could be considered as an adequate mitigation strategy for workers in industry under the conditions simulated in the present study.
Cooling during exercise enhances performances, but the cooled body areas matter: A systematic review with meta-analyses

Abstract:Introduction: Hyperthermia during exercise induces central and peripheral fatigue and impairs physical performance. To facilitate heat loss and optimize performance, athletes can hasten body cooling prior (pre-cooling) or during (per-cooling) exercise. However, it is unclear whether per-cooling effect is the same on 'aerobic' and 'anaerobic' types of exercise (duration <75 and >76 seconds, respectively, according to Gastin [Sports Med 2001;31:725-741]) and whether the body area that is cooled makes a difference. Methods: A literature search led to the identification of 1582 potential studies. Included studies had to include physical exercise with sufficient details on the type, duration, intensity, and provide valid performance measures and a cooling intervention administered during exercise with sufficient details on the type and site of application. Results: Forty-five studies were included. Per-cooling provides a performance benefit during 'aerobic' (standardized mean difference (SMD) of 0.60, P < .001) and 'anaerobic' exercises (SMD = 0.27, P < .02). The effects were greater during aerobic compared to anaerobic exercises (P < .01). Internal cooling (cold fluid ingestion such as cold water and ice slurry/menthol beverage) and external cooling (face, neck, and torso) provide the greatest performance benefit for 'aerobic' performance with a moderate to large effect (0.46 < SMD < 1.24). For 'anaerobic' exercises, wearing a whole-body cooling garment is the best way to enhance exercise performance (SMD = 0.39, P < .01). Conclusion: Per-cooling improves 'aerobic' and 'anaerobic' exercise performance with a greater benefit for 'aerobic' exercise. The magnitude of the effect depends on the type and site of the cooling application.
Exercise and Heat Stress in Well-Healed Burn Survivors: Effects of Cooling Modalities on Thermal and Perceptual Responses

Abstract:Purpose: Burn injuries that require grafting impair thermoregulation, which may dissuade individuals with such injuries from being physically active. We tested the hypothesis that cooling modalities attenuate core temperature elevations and perceptions of heat stress during physical activity in the heat among adults with well-healed burn injuries. Methods: Adults with no burn injuries (non-burned), 20-40% body surface area burn injuries (moderate burn), and > 40% body surface area burn injuries (large burn) performed 1 hour of moderate intensity exercise (2.5 ± 0.2 mph and 2% grade) on four different occasions in two environmental conditions (30 °C & 39 °C, 40% relative humidity). Within each environmental condition, we applied one of the following cooling modalities, random assigned, for each visit: no cooling (control), fan at 4 m/s (fan), water spray every 5 min (water spray; scaled to burn area size), or a combination of water spray + fan. Results: In 30 °C, perceptual strain index (PeSI) was reduced in the non-burned and moderate burn groups with water spray + fan, whereas PeSI was reduced with all cooling modalities in the large burn group. The cooling modalities did not affect core temperature responses. In the 39 °C environment, water spray and water spray + fan attenuated the elevation in core temperature (p ≤ 0.007) only in the large burn group. In the moderate burn group, PeSI was decreased with water spray + fan (p = 0.017). In the large burn group, both water spray alone and water spray + fan (p ≤ 0.041) lowered PeSI. Conclusions: For both environments across burn groups, the applied cooling modalities were generally more effective at reducing indices of perceptual strain relative to indices of thermal strain (e.g., core temperature).

Abstract:Firefighters' protective clothing (FPC) can limit human thermoregulation due to limited water vapor permeability and insulation. This study investigated the effect of cooling on the physiological responses and probability of hyperthermia in subjects wearing FPC during exercise in a hot environment. Twelve males participated in this study. A maximal graded treadmill exercise test was performed to measure maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O2max) and to assess subjects' capacity to perform the assigned exercise. Exercise included treadmill walking at 40% V̇O2max in warm (30 °C) and humid (70% RH) conditions for 40 min while wearing FPC. Subjects participated in two randomly counterbalanced assigned experimental protocols: control (no cooling) and intervention (cooling). The experimental intervention consisted of a cooling garment infused with cooled water (18 °C) through silastic tubing sewn into the fabric and worn underneath FPC. Each subject served as their own control and, therefore, completed both the control and intervention of the protocol. A logistic regression model was used to analyze the interaction effect of cooling on the probability of progression to hyperthermia (Tc ≥ 38 °C). Subjects' physiological responses increased during exercise in a warm and humid environment. Active cooling decreased (p < 0.05) the thermal stress thereby reducing the probability of hyperthermia while exercising in hot and humid conditions. The results indicate that when cooling was used each subject, on average, was 91% less likely to reach the lower threshold limit of hyperthermia. Exercise in hot environments while wearing FPC results in significant physiological strain, which may lead to hyperthermia. Utilization of a cooling garment reduced physiological strain and the probability of hyperthermia.
Efficacy of the FIFA cooling break heat policy during an intermittent treadmill football simulation in hot conditions in trained males

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the efficacy of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) cooling break policy against alternative cooling configurations in attenuating thermal strain during simulated football in the heat. Methods 12 males (age: 27±6 years, V̇O 2peak : 61±7 mL/kg/min) completed five 90 min intermittent treadmill football match simulations in 40°C and 41% relative humidity (32°C wet-bulb globe temperature) with different cooling configurations: regular match without cooling breaks (REG), 3 min breaks without cooling (BRK no-cool ), 3 min breaks with cooling (BRK cool : current FIFA policy; chilled fluid ingestion and ice towel across neck and shoulders), 5 min extended half-time without cooling breaks (ExtHT only ) and 3 min cooling breaks with 5 min ExtHT (ExtHT cool ). Rectal temperature (T re ), heart rate, whole-body sweat rate (WBSR) and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) were recorded. Data are presented as mean (95% CIs). Results Final T re was lower in BRK no-cool (0.20°C (0.01, 0.39), p=0.038), BRK cool (0.39°C (0.21, 0.57), p<0.001) and ExtHT cool (0.40°C (0.22, 0.58), p<0.001) than REG (39.1°C (38.8, 39.3)). Mean T re was lower in ExtHT cool (38.2°C (38.0, 38.4)) than BRK cool (38.3°C (38.1, 38.5), p=0.018), BRK no-cool and ExtHT only (38.4°C (38.2, 38.6), p<0.001) and REG (38.5°C (38.3, 38.7), p<0.001). Mean heart rate was lower during BRK cool (6 beats/min (4, 7), p<0.001) and ExtHT cool (7 beats/min (6, 8), p<0.001) compared with REG. WBSR was comparable across trials (p ≥ 0.07) and RPE was attenuated during BRK cool (0.4 (0.1, 0.7), p=0.004) and ExtHT cool (0.5 (0.2, 0.7), p=0.002), compared with REG. Conclusion BRK cool and ExtHT cool attenuated thermal, cardiovascular and perceptual strain during a simulated football match in the heat. Additional strategies may be required in field settings or under harsher conditions.

Abstract:Objective: Individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) have decreased vasomotor control and perspiration ability corresponding to the level of spinal damage. This study compared body surface temperatures between wheelchair rugby players with cervical SCI (CSCI) and wheelchair basketball players with thoracolumbar SCI (TSCI).Methods: This is an observational study, including 10 male athletes with CSCI (mean age, 26.2 years) and 10 male athletes with TSCI (mean age, 29.7 years). The participants practiced wheelchair rugby and wheelchair basketball as per the format of a traditional game in a hot indoor environment. Body surface temperatures were measured before and after practice by thermography. Heart rate (HR) and maximum temperatures at measured sites (forehead, upper extremities, and lower extremities) were assessed.Results: Body surface temperatures showed a significant correlation between pre- and post-exercise and between groups (CSCI and TSCI) [P=0.003], indicating that temperature changes were different between the groups. The temperature before exercise was higher in the TSCI group than in the CSCI group [P=0.033]. The temperature after exercise was higher in the CSCI group than in the TSCI group; however, no significant difference was found [P=0.117]. HR at rest and maximum HR were different between the groups (P<0.001). Both HRs were significantly higher in the TSCI group than in the CSCI group (At rest: P=0.020; Maximum: P<0.001).Conclusions: We observed that the increase in body surface temperature because of exercise was higher in the CSCI group than in the TSCI group. There was no difference between the groups in terms of temperature on the forehead, where perspiration can occur. Cooling during the game was unable to prevent temperature increase. However, a limitation of the study is that exercise load was not measured, and cooling methods and amounts were not quantified.
Effects of Elevated Body Temperature on Selected Physiological Indices and Thermal Stress in Athletes and Non-Athletes

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of active and passive overheating. A group of athletes (A) and non-athletic men (N) underwent an exercise stress test at elevated ambient temperature and sauna bathing until an increase in rectal temperature of 1.2°C was observed. It was shown that group A performed physical exercise for a longer period of time, which elicited significantly higher amounts of work performed in the stress test. Both forms of overheating caused a significant decrease in BM and a significant change in plasma volume, while greater dehydration was observed after active overheating. Changes observed in group A were higher than in group N. MCV levels were initially higher in group A. The levels in both groups decreased after sauna bathing, although in non-athletes the decrease was greater. Both forms of overheating increased Hb, HCT, and SBP, while only the non-athletic group showed a decrease in DBP after the exercise stress test. However, a decrease in DBP was observed in both groups after sauna bathing. The PSI increased after both tests, yet to a higher extent after the stress test than after sauna bathing. The PSI was negatively correlated with VO 2max in both groups. The increase in cortisol concentration was higher after sauna bathing. There was a correlation between cortisol levels and the work performed during the stress test in group A. Endurance training resulted in more efficient thermoregulatory mechanisms in athletes.

Ice Slurry Ingestion Lowers Thermoregulatory Strain in Wheelchair Tennis Players During Repeated Sprint Intervals in the Heat

Abstract:Purpose: To examine the efficacy of per-cooling via ice slurry ingestion (ICE) in wheelchair tennis players exercising in the heat. Method: Eight wheelchair tennis players undertook sprints (4 sets of 10 × 5 s over 40 min) in a hot environment (∼32 °C), interspersed by 3 boluses of 2.67 g·kg (6.8 g·kg total) ICE or drinking temperate water (control condition). Athletes performed an on-court test of repeated sprint ability (20 × 20 m) in temperate conditions immediately before and 20 minutes after the heat exposure, and time to complete each sprint as well as intermediate times were recorded. Gastrointestinal and weighted mean skin and forehead temperatures were collected throughout the heat exposure, as were thermal sensation, heart rate, and blood lactate concentration. Sweat rate was calculated from body mass changes and fluid/ice intakes. Results: Compared with the control condition, ICE resulted in a significantly lower gastrointestinal temperature (95% CI, 0.11-0.17 °C; P < .001), forehead temperature (0.58-1.06 °C; P < .001), thermal sensation (0.07-0.50 units; P = .017), and sweat rate (0.06-0.46 L·h-1; P = .017). Skin temperature, heart rate, and blood lactate concentration were not significantly different between conditions (P ≥ .598). There was no overall change preheating to postheating (P ≥ .114) or an effect of condition (P ≥ .251) on repeated sprint times. Conclusions: ICE is effective at lowering objective and subjective thermal strain when consumed between sets of repeated wheelchair sprints in the heat. However, ICE has no effect on on-court repeated 20-m sprint performance.

Abstract:Progressive narrowing of the upper airway increases airflow resistance and can produce snoring sounds and apnea/hypopnea events associated with sleep-disordered breathing due to airway collapse. Recent studies have shown that acoustic properties during snoring can be altered with anatomic changes at the site of obstruction. To evaluate the instantaneous association between acoustic features of snoring and the anatomic sites of obstruction, a novel method was developed and applied in nine patients to extract the snoring sounds during sleep while performing dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The degree of airway narrowing during the snoring events was then quantified by the collapse index (ratio of airway diameter preceding and during the events) and correlated with the synchronized acoustic features. A total of 201 snoring events (102 pure retropalatal and 99 combined retropalatal and retroglossal events) were recorded, and the collapse index as well as the soft tissue vibration time were significantly different between pure retropalatal (collapse index, 24 ± 11%; vibration time, 0.2 ± 0.3 s) and combined (retropalatal and retroglossal) snores (collapse index, 13 ± 7% [P ≤ 0.0001]; vibration time, 1.2 ± 0.7 s [P ≤ 0.0001]). The synchronized dynamic MRI and acoustic recordings successfully characterized the sites of obstruction and established the dynamic relationship between the anatomic site of obstruction and snoring acoustics.
