Abstract:Recent years have seen the publication of numerous papers on the application of three-dimensional (3D) printing in plastic surgery. Despite this growing interest, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the field has yet to be conducted. To address this gap, we undertook a bibliometric study to map out the knowledge structure and identify research hotspots related to 3D printing in plastic surgery. We analyzed publications from 1995 to 2024, found in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC), utilizing tools such as VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and the R package "bibliometrix". Our analysis included 1,057 documents contributed by 5,545 authors from 1,620 organizations across 71 regions, and these were published in 400 journals. We observed a steady growth in annual publications, with Europe, Asia, North America, and Oceania leading in research output. Notably, Shanghai Jiao Tong University emerged as a primary research institution in this domain. The Journal of Craniofacial Surgery and Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery have made significant contributions to the field, with Thieringer, Florian M being the most prolific and frequently cited author. Key areas of focus include medical education and surgical procedures, with "3D printing", "virtual surgical planning" and "reconstructive/orthognathic surgery" highlighted as future research hotspots. Our study provides a detailed bibliometric analysis, revealing the evolution and progress of 3D printing technologies in plastic surgery. As these technologies continue to advance, their impact on clinical practice and patient lives is expected to be profound.
Research Hotspots and Trends of the Latest Advancements in the Field of Aesthetic Surgery: a Bibliometric Analysis Based on Four Authoritative Journals

Abstract:With the continuous development of aesthetic surgery, a large number of excellent publications have been reported on aesthetic surgery. However, no relevant studies have reported the latest advancements and hot trends in aesthetic surgery in recent years. In this study, we extracted relevant publications from four authoritative aesthetic surgery journals ( Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery , Aesthetic Surgery Journal , Aesthetic Plastic Surgery , and Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology ) and used bibliometrics to comprehensively analyze current hot trends. We found a significant increase in the number of quality studies in aesthetic surgery, and the USA was the leading country in the field of aesthetic surgery, as evidenced by the fact that it ranks first worldwide for the total number of publications and citations. Currently, the prevention and treatment of complications related to aesthetic surgery remain research hotspots. Meanwhile, androgenetic alopecia, hyperplastic scarring, and stem cell research are hot directions for future research, and more research is required for exploration.
Transatlantic Innovations: a new approach to international ideas and technology

Abstract:Background: In April of this past year, Transatlantic Innovations brought a variety of organizations and industry together for an international exchange of ideas, new technology, and current trends in plastic surgery. Methods: The meeting was highly interactive and included audience response devices. The focus was on 10 major areas: (1) new surgical techniques; (2) composite allografts versus conventional techniques, facing the future; (3) interspecialty collaboration versus competition; (4) the business of plastic surgery, best practices; (5) the image of the plastic surgeon, branding yourself; (6) medical tourism; (7) publicity; (8) the regulation of innovation, U.S. Food and Drug Administration and European Medicines Agency perspective; (9) the future of plastic surgery, cutting edge technologies; and (10) applications and controversies in fat grafting. The meeting concluded with the 8th International Committee for Quality Assurance, Medical Technologies and Devices in Plastic Surgery Consensus Conference with the development of a consensus statement. Results: Through an interactive audience response system, additional questions and attitudes were asked of the audience and, in real time, international differences were identified, which led to further discussions from panelists. Responses were identified in three major groups: European Union, North America, and the Rest of the World. Responses and data are included in this article. Conclusions: The meeting brought participants, industry, regulators, and educators from both sides of the Atlantic. The interaction of these groups in these outlined topics brought a unique perspective to the meeting and, in the end, volumes of data. We have more in common than we believe. It is our anticipation that as we as plastic surgeons move forward, we can use these interactions to help our own practices but more specifically the specialty as a whole.

Abstract:Background: Facial contouring procedures become popular in recent years, but there has been no bibliometric analysis focused on this field. Objective: Construct visualization maps and analyze the hotspots and current trends in this field using bibliometric analysis. Methods: Publications on facial contouring procedures were extracted from the Web of Science Core Collection database from 2003 to 2022. VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and “Bibliometrix” R package were used to analyze data. Results: Seven hundred and twenty-one publications on facial contouring procedures between 2003 and 2022 were included. The United States was the leading country both in publications (206) and citations (3941). Shanghai Jiao Tong University was the institution with the greatest contribution (35 publications with 379 citations). Hu J (17 publications) from China had the most outputs, while the most cited author was Rohrich RJ (321 citations) from the United States. The Journal of Craniofacial Surgery (135 documents) published the most research, and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery was the most cited journal (2755 citations). The most cited article focused on virtual surgical planning in mandibular reconstruction. Keywords co-occurrence analysis identified five clusters centered on “reconstruction,” “augmentation,” “reduction malarplasty,” “face rejuvenation,” and “orthognathic surgery,” separately. “Hyaluronic acid,” “facial feminization,” and “orthognathic surgery” might be related to trend topics. Conclusions: The research on facial contouring procedures is booming. In the past 2 decades, hotspots in this field included: facial defects reconstruction, facial augmentation cosmetology, facial skeletal contour plasty, and facial rejuvenation surgery. The following aspects may be trend frontiers: precision and personalization, combined treatments, transgender facial contour, and facial contour shaping with fat and hyaluronic acid.

The Impact of a Centralized Plastic Surgery Research Infrastructure on Scholarly Productivity and Output

Abstract:Although research and innovation is a key within the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery, the impact of team structure, interpersonal dynamics, and/or standardized infrastructure on scholarly output has been infrequently studied. In this work, we present the formation and implementation of a novel plastic surgery research program that aims to unite previously disparate clinical and translational research efforts at our institution to facilitate critical inquiry. From July 2022 to June 2023, our department launched a pilot research program based on three pillars: (1) formalization of a research curriculum (monthly research meetings for agenda setting and discussion for project honing, formal research leadership for meeting facilitation and workflow regulation), (2) development of a centralized database to compile ongoing research (Google Drive repository to house all ongoing research documents, facilitate real-time editing, and provide resources/templates for assisting in the research process), and (3) bolstering of a core research identity built on mentorship and collaboration (more frequent interactions to shift previously siloed faculty-student mentorship into a robust milieu of intercollaboration). During the first year, we saw an increased number of publications and presentations, as well as robust participation and contribution from faculty, residents, and medical students. Future directions will focus on addressing resource limitation, such as project idea availability and funding, to sustain the success and growth of this novel research infrastructure.

Abstract:Background Presentations are an important means of knowledge generation. Publication of these studies is important for dissemination of findings beyond meeting attendees. We analyzed a 10-year sample of presented abstracts at Plastic Surgery The Meeting and describe factors that improve rate and speed of conversion to peer-reviewed publication. Methods Abstracts presented between 2010 and 2019 at Plastic Surgery The Meeting were sourced from the American Society of Plastic Surgery Abstract Archive. A random sample of 100 abstracts from each year was evaluated. Abstract information and demographics were recorded. The title or author and keywords of each abstract were searched using a standardized workflow to find a corresponding published paper on PubMed, Google Scholar, and Google. Data were analyzed for trends and factors affecting conversion rate. Results A total of 983 presented abstracts were included. The conversion rate was 54.1%. Residents and fellows constituted the largest proportion of presenters (38.4%). There was a significant increase in medical student and research fellow presenters during the study period ( P < 0.001). Conversion rate was not affected by the research rank of a presenter's affiliated institution ( β = 1.001, P = 0.89), geographic location ( P = 0.60), or subspecialty tract ( P = 0.73). US academics had a higher conversion rate (61.8%) than US nonacademics (32.7%) or international presenters (47.1%) ( P < 0.001). Medical students had the highest conversion rate (65.6%); attendings had the lowest (45.0%). Research fellows had the lowest average time to publication (11.6 months, P = 0.007). Conclusions Lower levels of training, factors associated with increased institution-level support, and research quality affect rate and time to publication. These findings highlight the success of current models featuring medical student and research fellow-led projects with strong resident and faculty mentorship.

Abstract:Background: In recent years, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been used in plastic surgery, dermatology, and other treatment procedures worldwide. Since the number of scientific writings has been significantly increasing, it is challenging to generate a manual compilation and systematic review of PRP's therapeutic applications in dermatology and plastic surgeries. This study aimed to make a bibliometric analysis of the literature in the field and evaluate research hotspots and frontiers in this field in the past 20 years. Methods: Using the Academic Search Premier and ScienceDirect defined search terms, we searched the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) and Scopus databases. All data were analyzed using CiteSpace 5.8.R3 and VOSviewer, including countries, institutions, authors, keywords, cited authors, cited journals, cited references, discovered research hotspots, and frontiers. Results: A total of 1931 studies were retrieved. The number of publications on PRP application in dermatology and plastic surgeries showed a yearly increase. The United States was the most significant contributor to this field, while Italy's contribution was noteworthy. The journal with the highest number of relevant articles in dermatology and plastic surgery included the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology. However, the Wound Repair and Regeneration and International Journal of Molecular Sciences were the leading journals that should be paid attention to in the future. Author Anitua E from the Tor Vergata University of Rome published the most publications in this field. In the keyword co-occurrence analysis, all keywords were divided into six clusters, and the most common one in recent years was "PRP for facial beauty." Facial rejuvenation, scar, and alopecia were the main hotspots and research trends in this field. Conclusions: Based on the current global trends, the use of PRP in cosmetics and skin care is receiving increasing attention from researchers and clinicians. Recently, an increasing number of articles on PRP's application in skin tissue repair have been published in the United States and Italy. The number of studies on hair loss, facial rejuvenation, and scar management is increasing, suggesting that these subjects may become research hotspots for PRP in dermatology and cosmetic surgeries in recent years.
Using Alternative Bibliometric Indices to Characterize High-Impact Articles Published in the Field of Facial Plastic Surgery

Abstract:Background: Conventional measures of scholarly impact derived from citation count do not account for academic readership and do not measure impact on the nonacademic audience (ie, the general population that does not engage in scholarship). To more broadly characterize attention received by research articles, alternative measures have been developed, including Mendeley readership and Altmetric Attention scores. Together, these metrics reflect academic readership and the effects of research in mainstream media. Characterizing articles that score highly according to these alternative measures is of interest to facial plastic surgeons, especially those who aim to disseminate their work to broad audiences. Objectives: To identify characteristics of facial plastic surgery articles associated with increased attention from both academic and nonacademic audiences. Methods: The top 50 most-cited articles with a facial plastics focus published since 2009 were categorized according to various themes. Article attention was assessed using conventional and alternative bibliometric indices. Pearson correlation matrix assessed associations between indices. Rank order congruence between indices was also assessed. MANOVAs assessed the overall effect of article theme on scholarly impact. Multiple one-way ANOVAs assessed effect of theme on individual indices. Results: Citation count, Mendeley readership, and Altmetric mentions all showed significant positive correlation with citations per year ( P < .05, P < .01, P < .01, respectively). Citations/year was most congruent with total citations (50% congruence). Articles focused on “lower face” received significantly more Mendeley readership than those focused on “head and neck” ( P = .009). Articles focused on “cosmetics” had significantly more citations/year ( P = .018) and Altmetric mentions ( P = .015) than those focused on “reconstruction.” Conclusion: The facial plastic research articles that received the most attention from both academic and nonacademic audiences were those focused on cosmetics. Additionally, articles pertaining to the lower face received more academic attention than those pertaining to head and neck.
Emerging Trends in Virtual Surgical Planning for Orthognathic Surgery: A Global Overview of Research and Publication Patterns

Abstract:Purpose Anticipating trends and pursuing innovative ideas are imperative for the advancement of science. The objective of this study was to conduct a bibliometric analysis of three-dimensional (3D) virtual simulation in orthognathic surgery, explore its implications for clinical practice, and identify future publication trends through digital tools. Methods This study employed a retrospective bibliometric analysis using data obtained from the Web of Science (WoS) database. The search strategy focused on articles related to orthognathic surgery and virtual simulation techniques. RStudio and bibliometrix tools were used to data mining. The independent variables retrieved from digital analysis were the emerging themes related to virtual planning in orthognathic surgery. The trends that we identified were facial aesthetics, digital workflow, personalized treatments, and complex cases. The primary outcome variable was the number of publications dedicated to virtual simulation in orthognathic surgery, along with secondary outcomes such as citation rates, language of publication, country of origin, institutional affiliations, and emerging research themes. Covariates included variables related to publication characteristics, author affiliations, and geographic distribution of publications. Publication analyses over time involved descriptive statistics, regression analysis, Pearson correlation tests, and graphical representation techniques. Statistical significance was set at a 95% confidence interval (P-value < 0.05). Results A comprehensive analysis of 987 articles reveals the impact of included authors, with a mean H-index of 62 (sd=18,4). The analysis further illuminates a discernible upward trend in publications on this subject, showcasing a linear pattern with a notable R 2 value of 0.88 (p=0.021). English remains the predominant language of publication, accounting for 97.97% of articles, while contributions hailed from a diverse spectrum of 56 countries. Interestingly, a moderate correlation emerges between publication numbers and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita (r=0.30, p=0.044) and total area (r=0.30, p=0.032), whereas a more substantial correlation is evident with total population (r=0.61, p=0.034). Notably, the most cited article amassed 254 citations. Furthermore, a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.97 underscores the correlation between citation density and the year of publication. Conclusion The bibliometric indicators provided insights for evaluating research productivity and the quality of research output. Emerging themes included facial aesthetics, 3D printing, and the utilization of custom-made templates and implants. This study holds relevance for maxillofacial surgeons, academics, and researchers alike.

Social Media Popularity and Academic Productivity in Academic Plastic Surgery: A Positive Correlation

Abstract:Background: Social media is a powerful tool that has empowered plastic surgeons to easily collaborate with one another and rapidly publicize research progression. The present study investigates the relationship between academic productivity and social media presence among both integrated and independent plastic surgery programs and their faculty. Methods: Plastic surgery programs on the American Council of Academic Plastic Surgeons website were included. Faculty were identified via review of each program's website. Following metrics of academic productivity were collected for each faculty member: h-index, i10-index, number of publications, and number of citations. Online review was then conducted to identify faculty and program Instagram and Twitter accounts, and the number of associated followers and posts. Results: Integrated plastic surgery programs were more likely to have an Instagram account (p < 0.001), have higher average faculty h-index (p = 0.027), i10-index (p = 0.027), and number of publications (p = 0.042). A number of Instagram followers were significantly associated with average faculty h-index (p < 0.001), i10-index (p < 0.001), and number of publications (p < 0.001). The number of posts on a program's Instagram significantly predicted average faculty h-index (p < 0.001), i10-index (p < 0.001), and number of publications (p < 0.001). Twitter followers were significantly associated with average faculty h-index (p = 0.0397), i10-index (p = 0.0432), and number of citations (p = 0.00737). Conclusions: The present study reveals a correlation between metrics of social media popularity and academic productivity of plastic surgeons. We propose that Instagram and Twitter are effective tools with which plastic surgeons may not only publicize their clinical practice, but also rapidly disseminate important innovations among the medical community. Integrated plastic surgery programs and their faculty have significantly higher utilization of social media platforms. The number of followers and posts on a program's Instagram have a significantly positive correlation with average faculty's academic productivity. Social media platforms may empower academic plastic surgeons to disseminate their innovations on a larger scale. Molecular Characterization of Salt Tolerant Rhizobial Strains Induced by Gamma Rays Using RAPD Markers

Abstract:Rhizobia are soil-borne bacteria that form nodules with legume roots and convert nitrogen into ammonia. Legume plants are often a major part of native or agricultural ecosystems, which increas nitrogen in low fertility soils, e.g. saline soils. The major target of this study was to characterize salt-tolerant rhizobial strains with high symbiotic efficiency. We choose ten strains of rhizobia that were previously mutagenized. Obtained results showed that 40 krad was the highest dose of gamma rays supported by tested strains. The irradiated clones at 50 krad were more tolerant to salt stress compared to control strains, which proved that gamma irradiation was effective in changing physiological and phenotypic characteristics via random mutations. The rhizobial strains treated with gamma rays were investigated using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA profiles to differentiate the DNA patterns among gamma treated rhizobia and parental strains. The RAPD profiles showed different, similar or even the same RAPD patterns for both types of rhizobial strains. The increase of N2 fixation parameters with some mutants was related to tolerance acquisition that protects effective symbiosis against damage induced by abiotic stresses. Inoculation with mutant isolates resulted in higher total nitrogen content than parental strains. According to the results of this study it can be recommended that inoculation of Vicia faba with effective Rhizobium strains can result in significant increase in yield due to higher nitrogen fixation ability. Assessment of synthetic peptides of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus recognized by long‐lasting immunity

Abstract:Abstract: In order to determine highly immunogenic severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS‐CoV) epitope peptides capable of inducing long‐lasting immunity, we first screened immunoglobulin‐G (IgG) antibodies reactive to 197 different overlapping 15‐mers from the SARS‐CoV proteins in the sera of three infected patients. Forty‐two peptides among them were reactive to the sera from all three patients. Consequently, we tested for the reactivity of these 42 peptides to patients' sera (n = 45) at 6‐month post‐infection. The significantly higher levels of IgG antibodies specific to three (S791, M207 and N161) of 42 peptides were detectable in the post‐infection sera from 23 (51%), 27 (60%) and 19 (42%) of 45 patients, respectively. These three peptides, recognized by their long‐lasting immunity, may provide a better understanding of the immunogenicity of SARS‐CoV.
Aesthetic Specialization: A Comparative Study Across Medical and Surgical Specialties

Abstract:Background: Post-residency fellowship training has become increasingly popular as a career option. Specifically, the subspecialty of aesthetic surgery has grown tremendously over the past two decades within several fields, including plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRS), otolaryngology, dermatology, and ophthalmology. However, the popularity of aesthetic specialization through fellowship remains unknown. The present study aims to analyze trends in aesthetic specialization across these specialties and compare its popularity to other fellowships. Methods: A retrospective review of data from the San Francisco Match, National Resident Matching Program, American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education was performed. Data on graduating residents and applicants to fellowship were collected. ANOVA and t-tests were used to compare differences between groups. Results: Significant disparities were observed in applicants and matched applicants to aesthetic fellowships among the four residencies (p<0.001). Aesthetic fellowship was the most popular option after otolaryngology residency (12.5%-27% depending on the year) and second most popular choice after PRS (8%-17%) and dermatology (2%-5%). A comparison between PRS and otolaryngology demonstrated a significantly higher percent of the latter choosing aesthetic fellowship over time (p<0.001). However, no significant difference in applicants to aesthetic fellowship was found between dermatology and ophthalmology (t-test, p=0.060). Conclusions: The number of applicants to aesthetic fellowship has increased over time across all eligible residencies with the more surgical heavy specialties (ENT and PRS) having the highest percent of applicants. Differences in aesthetic training between fields was also observed, which may reflect underlying variations in training and residency exposure.

Abstract:Background: Celebrities have long influenced the medical decisions of the general population. By analyzing Google search data using Google Trends, we measured the impact of highly publicized plastic surgery-related events on the interest level of the general population in specific search terms. Additionally, we investigated seasonal and geographic trends around interest in rhinoplasties, which is information that physicians and small surgical centers can use to optimize marketing decisions. Methods: Google Trends was used to access search data histories for three separate areas of interest: Kylie Jenner and lip fillers, Joan Rivers and plastic surgery, and rhinoplasty, which were then analyzed using two-tailed, two-sample equal variance t-tests. Results: The average interest level in fillers increased by 30.31 points after Kylie Jenner announced that she received Juvéderm lip injections. The interest level in plastic surgery was decreased by 21.3% the month after Joan Rivers' death. Between January 2004 and May 2017, the average interest level for rhinoplasty was significantly different in January/December (67.91 ± 20.68) and June/July (70.12 ± 18.89) from the remaining calendar months (63.58 ± 19.67). Los Angeles, New York City, and Miami showed consistently high interest levels throughout the time period, while Tulsa, OK, showed a major interest increase between 2015 to 2016 of 65 points. Conclusions: A noticeable impact was observed in both celebrity cases on search term volume, and a seasonal effect is apparent for rhinoplasty searches. As many surgeons already employ aggressive Internet marketing strategies, understanding and utilizing these trends could help optimize their investments, increase social engagement, and increase practice awareness by potential patients. Abstract:Background: With the aim of facilitating a critical self-reflection on how to align plastic surgery education with making excellent plastic surgeons, a rotating small-group session followed by live interactive audience polling was used to perform a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis at the 10th Annual American Council of Academic Plastic Surgeons Winter Meeting. Methods: The final day of the conference included a 3-hour session of rotating small groups followed by live interactive audience polls discussing the following six relevant educational topics: the Plastic Surgery Common Application and resident selection, aesthetic surgery education, leadership development and business education, embedded fellowships and focused training, mentorship, and faculty retention. Results: A total of 60 individuals participated in the activity. A SWOT analysis was successfully performed for each educational topic, and a minimum of four opportunities were identified per topic to help guide future endeavors. Examples of opportunities include releasing recommendations for the implementation of holistic review; developing formal guidelines for aesthetic surgery education in residency via collaboration between ACAPS, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and The Aesthetic Society; creating extended focused elective rotations; integrating business education into formal curricula for all training levels; enforcing transparency regarding position expectations and offerings including salary, call schedule, and current challenges; and more. Conclusion: The results of this study will help guide future initiatives by the ACAPS to improve resident education and academic retention.
Attitudes Toward and Use of eHealth Technologies Among German Dermatologists: Repeated Cross-Sectional Survey in 2019 and 2021

Abstract:Background: In recent years, legal and infrastructural conditions have been set to improve the adoption of digital applications in health care in Germany. The impact of these actions was amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic. So far, no studies have confirmed this progress in dermatology. Objective: The aim of this study was to measure changes in knowledge, interest, expectation, and use of digital applications in health care among dermatologists in Germany in 2019 and 2021. Methods: We administered a repeated cross-sectional survey among dermatologists in medical practices and clinics in Germany at 2 time points: t 1 (2019; before the COVID-19 pandemic) and t 2 (2021; during the COVID-19 pandemic). We used a standardized questionnaire, including items on respondents' knowledge, interest, expectation, and use of digital applications, as well as their demographics. The survey was distributed by post and email. The data were analyzed descriptively as well as with multiple logistic regressions. Results: At t 1 , 585 (272/571, 47.6% female; mean age 52.4, SD 8.9 years) dermatologists and at t 2 , 792 (360/736, 48.9% female; mean age 54.3, SD 8.6 years) dermatologists participated in this survey. Interest in digital medicine was higher at t 1 than at t 2 (381/585, 65.1% vs 458/792, 57.8%; P ≤.001). Nevertheless, 38.6% (306/792) had used digital applications more often since the beginning of the pandemic. For example, real-time telemedicine with patients (12/585, 2.1% vs 160/792, 7.6%; P ≤.001) and other specialists did increase (33/385, 5.7% vs 181/792, 22.8%; P ≤.001). Almost one-third expressed great concerns about digitalization (272/792, 34.3% vs 294/792, 37.1%; P =.21). Spatial analysis revealed higher interest in, more positive expectations toward, and higher use of digital applications in urban areas in comparison to rural areas. For instance, dermatologists from urban areas assessed future applications as having less risk (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 0.51, 95% CI 0.35-0.76) than did dermatologists from rural areas. The situation was similar with the age groups, as, for example, dermatologists aged <50 years also expected lower risks (aOR 0.51, 95% CI 0.34-0.77) than those aged ≥50 years. There were no differences between sexes in use, but there were differences in knowledge and expectation; for example, male participants assessed their confidence in using digital applications as higher (aOR 1.44, 95% CI 1.01-2.04) than did female participants. Conclusions: During the pandemic, the use of digital applications in dermatology increased but still remained at a moderate level. The regional and age-related disparities identified indicate the need for further action to ensure equal access to digital care.

Global Tendencies and Frontier Topics in Cervical Laminoplasty: A Bibliometric Analysis from 1982 to 2023

Abstract:Background: This bibliometric analysis aimed to map the knowledge network of laminoplasty research. Methods: Studies on laminoplasty published from 1982 to 2023 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). The contributions of countries, institutions, authors, and journals were identified using VOSviewer, Scimago Graphica, and Microsoft Excel. Tendencies, hotspots, and knowledge networks were analyzed and visualized using VOSviewer and CiteSpace. Results: We identified 2577 publications on laminoplasty. The annual number of publications exhibited an overall increasing trend since 2004. Among these, Japan, China, and the United States were the 3 major contributing countries. Keio University, Nagoya University, and Tokyo Medical & Dental University were the 3 most productive institutions. Shiro Imagama ranked first among authors regarding the number of articles, while K Hirabayashi was first among co-cited authors. Spine was the top journal in terms of the number of publications, citations, and co-citations. In addition, the research topics can be divided into 3 clusters: (1) Comparison between laminoplasty and other surgery in outcomes and complications; (2) Axial symptoms in laminoplasty; (3) Sagittal alignment and sagittal balance in laminoplasty. Emerging topics sagittal alignment and sagittal balance in degenerative cervical spondylosis are identified as current research frontiers. Conclusions: This study drew a knowledge map of the top countries, institutions, authors, publications, and journals on laminoplasty over the past 4 decades. The current and future hotspots of laminoplasty focus on sagittal balance, comparison between other surgery in outcomes and complication, and axial symptoms in laminoplasty.
