Abstract:Aims To integrate the overall effect of e-health based self-management on cancer-related fatigue (CRF), self-efficacy, and quality of life (QOL) among adult cancer patients. Design A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. Data sources We researched PubMed, Cumulative Index Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science and Embase up to 14 July 2019. Review Methods We conducted the review with the Cochrane Handbook (version 5.1.0) and measured the quality of evidence with the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation criteria. Results Literature searching identified 15 trials with a total of 2,337 participants. Integrated results analysis of e-health based self-management demonstrated a statistically significant but small effect on CRF and self-efficacy, but no statistically significant improvement on the QOL. Meanwhile, subgroup analysis indicated that e-health based self-management had a larger effect on fatigue compared with usual care/waiting list control. Conclusion E-health based self-management is effective for CRF and self-efficacy, but not the QOL. More high-quality randomized control trials are warranted to confirm these conclusions. Impact Results showed e-health could improve fatigue and self-efficacy but not the QOL. Health providers could take into the various factors of e-health interventions when providing telehealth service. Other researchers might be inspired by the current review before they begin a study about e-health.
Effects of web‐based interventions on quality of life among patients with breast cancer: A systematic review and meta‐analysis of randomized controlled trials

Abstract:Objective Patients with breast cancer experience decreased quality of life due to various physical and psychological challenges. Web‐based interventions are accessible, cost‐effective, and convenient for improving their quality of life. This study evaluated whether web‐based interventions improve quality of life and included only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with clear evidence. Methods PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, Web of Science, and PsycINFO were searched for articles published until October 16, 2023. Inclusion criteria were RCTs evaluating the effect of web‐based interventions on quality of life in patients with breast cancer. The risk of bias was assessed with Cochrane's Risk of Bias Tool 2.0. Standardized mean differences were calculated with a random effects model using R version 4.0.3, and subgroup and moderator analyses were performed. Results Since quality of life was measured using two different instruments in two studies, 21 comparisons were analyzed from 19 RCTs. As a result, the findings suggest that web‐based interventions have a small effect size on improving the quality of life for patients with breast cancer (SMD = 0.27, 95% confidence intervals [CIs]: 0.15–0.38, p = 0.03). Heterogeneity was found to be low (I2 = 40%). The quality‐of‐life subdomain results showed a moderate effect size on the physical functioning and a small effect size on the cognitive and emotional functioning of patients with breast cancer but no significant impact on their role or social functioning. Conclusions Web‐based interventions are effective in improving patients' quality of life with breast cancer; they also improve physical, cognitive, and emotional functioning. However, evidence regarding intervention methods remains inconclusive due to the limited number of RCTs, necessitating further research.

Abstract:<h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Objective</h3><p>Self‐efficacy expectations are associated with improvements in problematic outcomes widely considered clinically significant (i.e., emotional distress, fatigue, pain), related to positive health behaviors, and, as a type of personal agency, inherently valuable. Self‐efficacy expectancies, estimates of confidence to execute behaviors, are important in that changes in self‐efficacy expectations are positively related to future behaviors that promote health and well‐being. The current meta‐analysis investigated the impact of psychological interventions on self‐efficacy expectations for a variety of health behaviors among cancer patients.</p><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Methods</h3><p>Ovid Medline, PsycINFO, CINAHL, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science were searched with specific search terms for identifying randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that focused on psychologically‐based interventions. Included studies had: 1) an adult cancer sample, 2) a self‐efficacy expectation measure of specific behaviors and 3) an RCT design. Standard screening and reliability procedures were used for selecting and coding studies. Coding included theoretically informed moderator variables.</p><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Results</h3><p>Across 79 RCTs, 223 effect sizes, and 8678 participants, the weighted average effect of self‐efficacy expectations was estimated as g=0.274 (p</p><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Conclusions</h3><p>The results establish the impact of psychological interventions on self‐efficacy expectations as comparable in effect size to commonly reported outcomes (distress, fatigue, pain). Additionally, the result that in‐person interventions achieved the largest effect is supported by Social Learning Theory and could inform research related to the development and evaluation of interventions.</p>

Peer support interventions on quality of life, depression, anxiety, and self-efficacy among patients with cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:ObjectivePeer support is a common form of social support that is provided by individuals with the same disease, which is cost-effective and has enhanced health outcomes for patients. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of peer support interventions on quality of life (QOL), depression, anxiety, and self-efficacy among patients with cancer.MethodsA systematic search of seven databases were conducted from inception to January 2021. Studies were screened and assessed by two independent reviewers. Data synthesis was conducted using RevMan 5.3 software, and the standardized mean difference was used to calculate pooled effect sizes.ResultsSeventeen studies were included in current review. The meta-analysis indicated significant beneficial effects of peer support on QOL (SMD = 0.48, 95% CI 0.21–0.75; p < 0.001), depression (SMD = −0.23, 95% CI −0.39 to −0.07; p = 0.005), anxiety (SMD = −0.24, 95% CI −0.45 to 0.03; p = 0.03), and self-efficacy (SMD = 0.22, 95% CI 0.03–0.42; p = 0.03) relative to controls. The subgroup analysis for QOL revealed that peer support delivered in the mixed mode contributed more than peer support delivered in the single mode (e.g., face-to-face or telephone).ConclusionPeer support has significant effects on improving QOL and self-efficacy as well as alleviating depression and anxiety among patients with cancer. Additional randomized controlled trials with rigorous design and larger sample sizes are warranted in the future.Practice implicationsPeer support programs might benefit patients with cancer and could be used as a complementary approach to traditional healthcare services during cancer rehabilitation.

Abstract:The impact of cancer interventions has been conducted in several research due to the significant burden of this non-communicable disease. The interventions that played an important role in the improvement of the patient's quality of life (QoL) and health-related quality of life (HRQL) can be classified into two main groups: pharmaceutical and non-pharmacological methods. However, studies so far often analyze a specific group of interventions for specific types of cancer. Thus, in this systematic review and meta-analysis, we synthesized the overall impact of cancer interventions on patients' quality of life in several cancers.In this research, we followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA-P) to search the longitudinal original research on the Web of Science (WOS) database. After that, the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) and Jadad Scale were used to assess the quality of non-randomized control trials and randomized control trials, respectively. Then, the characteristics of the included studies were described in the six main fields table and the random effect model with robust estimation was applied to analyze the impact of interventions on the health utility of patients.From the database, 122 longitudinal original research were included in the meta-regression, with most of them having high or fair quality. The European Organization for the research and treatment of cancer scale for quality of life (EORTC-QLQ) was the most used health utility measurement at 65.15%. In the adjusted effect models, the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) had significant statistics in all models when we compared it with the EQ-5D Scale (p < 0.05) and several types of cancer such as breast, lung, and prostate cancer had significant statistics when comparing with hematological cancer in the model types of cancer (p < 0.01). Moreover, radiotherapy, screening, and a combination of chemotherapy and best supportive care also had significant statistics (p < 0.01) in the model of interventions when compared with radiotherapy applied only. Our research can suggest a vital combination of both pharmaceutical and non-pharmacological interventions to improve the quality of life of some common types of cancer patients.
Self‐management interventions for cancer survivors: A systematic review and evaluation of intervention content and theories

Abstract:<h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Objective</h3><p>Self‐management has been proposed as a strategy to help cancer patients optimize their health and wellbeing during survivorship. Previous reviews have shown variable effects of self‐management on outcomes. The theoretical basis and psycho‐educational components of these interventions has not been evaluated in detail. We aimed to evaluate the evidence for self‐management and provide a description of the components of these interventions.</p><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Methods</h3><p>We conducted a systematic review of self‐management interventions for adults who had completed primary cancer treatment by searching MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsychINFO, CINAHL, Scopus, Cochrane database of systematic reviews, National Institutes of Health clinical trials registry, and Cochrane CENTRAL registry of controlled trials. We included experimental and quasi‐experimental designs. Data synthesis included narrative and tabular summary of results; heterogeneity of interventions and outcomes precluded meta‐analysis. Study quality was evaluated using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool or the Risk of Bias of Non‐Randomized studies tool.</p><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Results</h3><p>41 studies published between 1994 and March 29, 2018 were included. Studies were predominantly randomized controlled trials and targeted to breast cancer survivors. A variety of intervention designs, psychoeducational components, and outcomes were identified. Less than 50% of the studies included a theoretical framework. There was variability of effects across most outcomes. Risk of bias could not be fully assessed.</p><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Conclusions</h3><p>There are limitations in the design and research on self‐management interventions for cancer survivors which hinders their translation into clinical practice. Further research is needed to understand if these interventions are an important type of support for cancer survivors.</p>

Abstract:Objective. High levels of self-efficacy (SE) in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients and/or caregivers enable patients to cope with cancer, reduce caregiver burden, and promote quality of life (QOL) in patients and caregivers alike. This review aims to (a) identify the SE theory sources covered by SE interventions or interventions, including targeting improved SE for CRC patients and/or caregivers, to guide future development of SE interventions; and (b) explore intervention effects based on SE theory through meta-analysis. Methods. Using five electronic databases—CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Embase, PsycINFO, and PubMed—a systematic search was performed in April 2021 to identify English or Chinese literature that studied improving SE interventions for CRC patients and/or caregivers. Manual screening of the articles’ references list was also performed. Results. A total of 18 studies were found to be suitable and included in this review. Of the 18 studies that were included, 10 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) studies with 917 participants were eligible for meta-analysis. Interventions provide support for SE drawing on different sources of information. Performance accomplishment (PA) is the key source, with vicarious experience (VE) and verbal persuasion (VP) assisting in improving PA. Reducing negative emotional arousal (NEA) and improving positive emotional arousal (PEA) are also indispensable factors in improving SE. The meta-analysis results show that interventions based on the SE theory can bring about positive effects for CRC patients and/or caregivers. Conclusions. Different sources of information aimed at improving SE, covered by the interventions, including PA, VE, VP, NEA, and PEA, have been explored. Positive intervention outcomes that focused on improving SE for CRC patients and/or caregivers were identified and highlighted. For future SE interventions, we advocate choosing combination sources of SE information to design interventions. It is recommended that future SE improvement interventions should focus on improving PA, supplemented by increasing VE, while reducing NEA and providing useful VP.

Effectiveness of self-help workbook intervention on quality of life in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy: results of a randomized controlled trial

Abstract:Background: A self-help workbook is expected to support cancer patients to cope with physical and psychosocial distress, to facilitate communication with medical staff, and to improve quality of life (QOL). We conducted a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of a self-help workbook intervention on QOL and survival. Methods: From June 2014 to March 2015, patients with breast, colorectal, gastric, and lung cancer receiving outpatient chemotherapy were randomized into an intervention group (n = 100) or control group (n = 100). Intervention group participants received workbooks originally made for this study, read advice on how to cope with distress, and filled out questionnaires on the workbooks periodically. EORTC QLQ-C30 was evaluated at baseline, at 12 weeks, and at 24 weeks. The primary endpoint was Global Health Status / QOL scale (GQOL). Results: No significant interaction was observed between the intervention and time in terms of GQOL or any of the functional scales. Among the 69 patients who continued cytotoxic chemotherapy at 24 weeks, the intervention was significantly associated with improved emotional functioning scores (P = 0.0007). Overall survival was not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusions: Self-help workbook intervention was feasible in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Although the effect of the intervention was limited, a post-hoc subset analysis suggested that the intervention may improve emotional functioning among patients who receive long-term cytotoxic chemotherapy. Effect of Mobile Phone App-Based Interventions on Quality of Life and Psychological Symptoms Among Adult Cancer Survivors: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Abstract:Background: Most patients with cancer experience psychological or physical distress, which can adversely affect their quality of life (QOL). Smartphone app interventions are increasingly being used to improve QOL and psychological outcomes in patients with cancer. However, there is insufficient evidence regarding the effect of this type of intervention, with conflicting results in the literature. Objective: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we investigated the effectiveness of mobile phone app interventions on QOL and psychological outcomes in adult patients with cancer, with a special focus on intervention duration, type of cancer, intervention theory, treatment strategy, and intervention delivery format. Methods: We conducted a literature search of PubMed, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, Embase, Scopus, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and WanFang to identify studies involving apps that focused on cancer survivors and QOL or psychological symptoms published from inception to October 30, 2022. We selected only randomized controlled trials that met the inclusion criteria and performed systematic review and meta-analysis. The standardized mean difference (SMD) with a 95% CI was pooled when needed. Sensitivity and subgroup analyses were also conducted. Results: In total, 30 randomized controlled trials with a total of 5353 participants were included in this meta-analysis. Compared with routine care, app interventions might improve QOL (SMD=0.39, 95% CI 0.27-0.51; P<.001); enhance self-efficacy (SMD=0.15, 95% CI 0.02-0.29; P=.03); and alleviate anxiety (SMD=-0.64, 95% CI -0.73 to -0.56; P<.001), depression (SMD=-0.33, 95% CI -0.58 to -0.08; P=.009), and distress (SMD=-0.34, 95% CI -0.61 to -0.08; P=.01). Short-term (duration of ≤3 months), physician-patient interaction (2-way communication using a smartphone app), and cognitive behavioral therapy interventions might be the most effective for improving QOL and alleviating adverse psychological effects. Conclusions: Our study showed that interventions using mobile health apps might improve QOL and self-efficacy as well as alleviate anxiety, depression, and distress in adult cancer survivors. However, these results should be interpreted with caution because of the heterogeneity of the interventions and the study design. More rigorous trials are warranted to confirm the suitable duration and validate the different intervention theories as well as address methodological flaws in previous studies. Effects of interventions for enhancing resilience in cancer patients: A systematic review and network meta-analysis

Abstract:Background Various interventions appear to enhance cancer patients' resilience. However, the best intervention options are still unknown. This systematic review and network meta-analysis aimed to examine the impact of different interventions on resilience and identify the most effective interventions. Methods Nine major English and Chinese databases were systematically retrieved for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published from inception to 13 November 2023. The outcome was resilience. The analysis was conducted using Software Review Manager 5.4, R 4.2.3, and STATA 14.0. Results The network meta-analysis included 32 RCTs and evaluated 12 interventions. Regarding effectiveness, compared to routine care, the relative effect sizes of attention and interpretation therapy, cyclic adjustment training, cognitive intervention, expressive therapy, positive psychological intervention, social support intervention, and work-environment therapy had statistically significant enhancing resilience, with the SMD (95%CI) of 1.42 (0.75, 2.07), 1.97 (0.76, 3.18), 1.26 (0.76, 1.77), 0.93 (0.08, 1.78), 1.02 (0.55, 1.50), 1.01 (0.48, 1.56), 1.65 (0.94, 2.37), respectively. Considering the rank probability, statistical power, and efficacy, the most effective interventions for improving resilience were attention and interpretation therapy, cognitive intervention, and positive psychological intervention. With the limited quantity of RCTs, the effectiveness of cyclic adjustment training and work-environment therapy still needs to be explored. Conclusions Attention and interpretation therapy was the first best choice for boosting resilience out of the 12 interventions. Cognitive intervention and positive psychological intervention were also better choices for improving cancer patients' resilience. Due to the low quality and quantity of included RCTs, the need for multi-center, higher-quality trials with larger samples should be carried out. PROSPERO ID: CRD42023434223. This paper was an integrative literatures review of various psychosocial interventions including cognitive behavioral therapy, group-based supportive therapy, counseling or psychotherapy, education or psychoeducation and music therapy et al, and analyzing the complexity of psychosocial interventions' RCTs in oncology and the current characteristic of these studies in China.
Effects of Internet-based psycho-educational interventions on mental health and quality of life among cancer patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:PurposeTo systematically review evidence regarding the benefits of Internet-based psycho-educational interventions among cancer patients.MethodsWe performed a systematic review with meta-analysis and qualitative evidence synthesis. Systematic searches for published studies in English or Chinese identified eligible randomized and clinical controlled trials. The following databases were searched: Medline, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Proquest Digital Dissertations, Foreign Medical Retrieval System, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Science and Technology Journal Database, China Wanfang Database, and Taiwanese Airiti Library. We also searched the gray literature and reviewed reference lists from relevant articles. Studies were scored for quality using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool.ResultsSeven eligible studies (1220 participants) were identified that used three intervention tools: website programs (n = 5), e-mail counseling (n = 1), and a single-session psycho-educational intervention (n = 1). The quality of all studies was moderate. The meta-analysis showed that Internet-based psycho-educational interventions had a significant effect on decreasing depression (standardized mean difference (SMD) − 0.58, 95% confidence interval (CI) (− 1.12, − 0.03), p = 0.04) and fatigue (mean difference (MD) − 9.83, 95% CI (− 14.63, − 5.03), p < 0.01). However, there was no evidence for effects on distress (SMD − 1.03, 95% CI (− 2.63, 0.57), p = 0.21) or quality of life (MD 1.10, 95% CI (− 4.42, 6.63), p = 0.70).ConclusionInternet-based psycho-educational interventions reduce fatigue and depression in cancer patients. More rigorous studies with larger samples and long-term follow-up are warranted to investigate the effects of these interventions on cancer patient quality of life and other psychosocial outcomes.

Abstract:Previous studies have shown that self-efficacy influences cancer survivors' quality of life. As most of the relevant findings are based on Caucasian cancer survivors, whether the same relationship holds among Asian cancer patients and through what mechanism self-efficacy influences quality of life are unclear. This study examined the association between self-efficacy and quality of life among Chinese cancer survivors, and proposed affect (positive and negative) as a mediator between self-efficacy and quality of life. A sample of 238 Chinese cancer survivors (75% female, mean age = 55.7) were recruited from Beijing, China. Self-efficacy, affect (positive and negative) and quality of life were measured in a questionnaire package. Self-efficacy was positively associated with quality of life and positive affect, and negatively associated with negative affect. Path analyses revealed the direct effect from self-efficacy to quality of life and the indirect effects from self-efficacy to quality of life through positive affect and negative affect. The beneficial role of self-efficacy in Chinese cancer survivors' quality of life and the mediating role of affect in explaining the relationship between self-efficacy and quality of life are supported. Future interventions should include self-care and affect regulation skills training to enhance cancer survivors' self-efficacy and positive affect, as this could help to improve Chinese cancer survivors' quality of life.

Abstract:Background General self-efficacy has been shown to be a protective factor of cancer survivors’ quality of life (QoL). Coping self-efficacy includes multiple aspects, such as maintaining positive attitudes, regulating emotion, seeking social support, and seeking medical information. How these various aspects are related to multiple domains of QoL is unclear. Purpose This study examined the associations between different aspects of coping self-efficacy and QoL among Chinese cancer survivors. Methods A sample of 238 Chinese cancer survivors (mean age = 55.7, 74.4 % female) in Beijing, China participated in the survey. Coping self-efficacy and QoL were measured by the Cancer Behavior Inventory and Quality of Life—Cancer Survivor Instrument. Results After controlling for demographic and disease-related variables, hierarchical regression analyses showed that coping self-efficacy in accepting cancer/maintaining a positive attitude was positively associated with physical, psychological, and spiritual QoL. Self-efficacy in affective regulation was positively associated with psychological and social QoL, but negatively associated with spiritual well-being. Self-efficacy in seeking support was positively associated with spiritual well-being, but negatively associated with physical QoL. Self-efficacy in seeking and understanding medical information was negatively associated with psychological and social QoL. Conclusions Our findings imply the specificity of coping self-efficacy in predicting QOL. Our findings could be helpful for designing future interventions. Increasing cancer survivors’ self-efficacies in accepting cancer/maintaining a positive attitude, affective regulation, and seeking support may improve cancer survivors’ QoL depending on the specific domains.
Evaluation on Effect of Psychosocial Interventions on Quality Of Life in Patients with Breast Cancer

Abstract:[Purpose] To evaluate the effect of psychosocial interventions on quality of life in patients with breast cancer by Meta-analysis.[Methods] Related randomized controlled trials(RCTs) were collected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Stata 11.0 was applied for combining the standardized mean difference(SMD),determining heterogeneity and sensitivity analysis. [Results] Six RCTs and 658 patients were included. The short-term(less than 1 month) quality of life of intervention group was not better than control group(SMD =0.202,95% CI:-0.093 ~0.496,P = 0.180),sensitivity analysis showed that this result was less stable. The middle-term(1~6 months) quality of life of intervention group was better than control group(SMD =0.268,95% CI:0.101 ~ 0.436,P=0.002).[Conclusion] After receiving psychosocial interventions,the middle-term quality of life in patients with cancer breast is improved,while the short-term effect is unclear. Psychosocial interventions can be implemented as tertiary prevention content in breast cancer patients.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION:Cancer and its treatment affect children's physical, psychological and social well-being throughout the disease trajectory. Spiritual well-being is a fundamental dimension of people's overall health and is considered a source of strength to motivate patients to cope with and adapt to their disease. Appropriate spiritual interventions are important to mitigate the psychological impact of cancer on children, with an ultimate goal of improving their quality of life (QoL) throughout the treatment course. However, the overall effectiveness of spiritual interventions for paediatric patients with cancer remains unclear. This paper describes a protocol to systematically summarise the characteristics of studies related to existing spiritual interventions and synthesise their effectiveness on psychological outcomes and QoL among children with cancer. METHODS AND ANALYSIS:Ten databases will be searched to identify appropriate literature: MEDLINE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, LILACS, OpenSIGLE, the Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, the Chinese Medical Current Contents and the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure. All randomised controlled trials that meet our inclusion criteria will be included. The primary outcome will be QoL as evaluated by self-reported measures. The secondary outcomes will be self-reported or objectively measured psychological outcomes, including anxiety and depression. Review Manager V.5.3 will be used to synthesise the data, calculate treatment effects, perform any subgroup analyses and assess the risk of bias in included studies. ETHICAL AND DISSEMINATION:The results will be presented at international conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals. As no individual data will be involved in this review, ethical approval is not required.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction:There is a growing concern regarding self-care and chemotherapy side effects. The present study aimed to assess the effectiveness of self-care measures on knowledge, self-efficacy, and performance status among cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted in Dr. Kamatchi Memorial Hospital, India. Using purposive sampling technique, 200 cancer patients were selected. Patients were interviewed using semi-structured knowledge questionnaires, Modified Stanford Patient Education Research Center Self-efficacy scale, deliberate self-efficacy with rating scale under four subheadings, and ECOG Performance Status Scale with 5–point grading scale i.e., dead to fully active. Results:There was adequate knowledge (95%) on self-care measures after the intervention. The mean score was significant, i.e., 21.33 (2.25), which had difference between post-knowledge score in experimental and control was statistically significant at P < 0.001 level. The majority of patients reported a high self-efficacy level (t = 198.60, P < 0.001). In addition, despite self-efficacy and knowledge the performance status observed at each cycle, i.e., 4 cycles had mean score of t = 32.13, P < 0.001, showed high level of performance status. Conclusion: The study revealed that the self-care measures during each cycle had improved the selfefficacy and performance status to high level, which in turn reduced the side effects of chemotherapy to the certain level.

Abstract:BackgroundAdolescents and young adults (AYAs) have more frequent and intense adverse effects from cancer therapy than other age groups. Self-efficacy, the ability for persons to maintain health-related behavior change, may assist with symptom management but the role it plays in AYAs with cancer has not been thoroughly investigated. This review explores the role that self-efficacy has in symptom management for AYAs with cancer and provides guidance for clinicians to utilize self-efficacy as a means to reduce side effects of therapy.MethodsA systematic review of peer-reviewed literature was conducted to identify works discussing self-efficacy and symptom management for AYAs with cancer. Five databases were searched with key terms and articles that discussed relationships between self-efficacy and cancer therapy symptoms were retained for analysis.FindingsTwelve manuscripts representing 1180 individuals age 12 to 43 years were identified. Self-efficacy was found to be related to (1) health management behaviors, (2) psychosocial health, (3) sexual and reproductive health, and (4) physical symptoms. Self-efficacy had direct correlations with physical activity, nutritional intake, symptom regulation, mental health, sexual health, and fertility preservation. The included studies did not find significant relationships with medication adherence or pain management.DiscussionSelf-efficacy is an attribute that impacts behavior change, health maintenance, and overall wellness and can be changed over time and through interventions to improve symptoms of cancer therapy. Self-efficacy should be evaluated as a construct in relevant studies aimed at improving side effects of cancer therapy to better understand outcomes from interventions. Symptoms, toxicities, and adverse effects of cancer therapy may be improved by increasing self-efficacy of patients.
