Abstract:The field of Radiology is continually changing, requiring corresponding evolution in both medical student and resident training to adequately prepare the next generation of radiologists. With advancements in adult education theory and a deeper understanding of perception in imaging interpretation, expert educators are reshaping the training landscape by introducing innovative teaching methods to align with increased workload demands and emerging technologies. These include the use of peer and interdisciplinary teaching, gamification, case repositories, flipped-classroom models, social media, and drawing and comics. This publication aims to investigate these novel approaches and offer persuasive evidence supporting their incorporation into the updated Radiology curriculum.

Everyone Is Listening: Podcasts as an Innovative Educational Approach in Graduate Level Education

Abstract:Background: Over the past decade, graduate level nursing education has transitioned from synchronous, classroom-based models to hybrid, asynchronous models. This change has increased the amount of screen-time for graduate learners and generated the problem of screen-fatigue. To reduce screen-based learning time, faculty transitioned a didactic critical care course to a podcast-based educational format. Method: This pilot study used a pre-course and post-course survey to evaluate the efficacy of podcasts in delivering course content, meeting course objectives, and understanding learners' perceptions of podcasts in education. Results: Pre-course and post-course survey data demonstrated that podcasts successfully met course objectives and provided content that was equally or more engaging than screen-based lectures. Conclusion: Podcasts can be successfully incorporated into a didactic course as a content delivery modality and are an innovative strategy for engaging adult learners in an asynchronous, distance-friendly format while continuing to meet educational objectives. Abstract:Medical ethics education is crucial for medical students and trainees, helping to shape attitudes, beliefs, values, and professional identities. Exploration of ethical dilemmas and approaches to resolving them provides a broader understanding of the social and cultural contexts in which medicine is practiced, as well as the ethical implications of medical decisions, fostering critical thinking and self-reflection skills imperative to providing patient-centered care. However, exposure to medical ethics topics and their clinical applications can be limited by curricular constraints and the availability of institutional resources and expertise. Podcasts, among other Free Open Access Medical Education (FOAMed) resources, are a novel educational tool that offers particular advantages for self-directed learning, a process by which learners engage in asynchronous educational opportunities outside of traditional academic or clinical settings. Podcasts can be readily distributed to wide audiences and played at any time, reducing barriers to access and offering a level of flexibility that is not possible with traditional forms of education and is well-suited to busy schedules. Podcasts can also use real voices and storytelling to make the content memorable and eminently human. This paper describes the development, production process, and impact of Core IM's "At the Bedside," a podcast focusing on issues in medical ethics and the medical humanities, intending to supplement standard bioethics curricula in an accessible, relevant, and engaging way. The authors advocate for broad incorporation of podcasts into medical ethics education.

Abstract:Social media, particularly podcasts, has become an influential modality within informal medical education. As podcasts continue to become more prevalent among learners of all types, clinical educators of the future must be able to help navigate this new pedagogy. Preliminary data demonstrates that medical students, residents, post-training physicians, and advanced practitioners all utilize podcasts for their own benefit. New data is discussed in the setting of the current literature on podcasting and important questions remain to determine how this new form of learning can and will be integrated into formal and informal medical curriculum.

Prior '12 Tips' publications have focused on helping medical educators create and publish their own podcasts. Abstract:Physician assistant (PA) educators are responsible for preparing the next generation of PAs to be not only healthcare providers but also healthcare leaders. Regardless of whether advanced practice providers choose to pursue formal leadership roles in healthcare, they will undoubtedly be expected to possess and exhibit leadership skills. The PA profession indicates leadership as an important professional competency, yet leadership training is rare in current curricula. The PA community should consider the importance of leadership training for educators as they influence future PAs and the way PA students will affect their future patients and the healthcare systems for which they work. The aim of this article was to bring awareness to the need for leadership skill training in PA education, to review common leadership styles in healthcare, and to offer practical leadership tips to healthcare educators.

Abstract:Podcasts have become increasingly popular tools for medical education in recent years. Only requiring a computer or smart phone, podcasts are readily accessible to healthcare professionals, helping to disseminate medical information quickly and creating a wide community of listeners. With numerous medical podcasts available and limited spare time, it can be challenging for a healthcare professional to identify the most high-yield podcast. This perspectives piece describes the role of podcasts in medical education before sharing five in-depth recommendations from Yale School of Nursing and Yale School of Medicine students and faculty. These five podcasts are: The Curbsiders Internal Medicine Podcast, Flip the Script, The Clinical Problem Solvers, 2 Docs Talk, and Key Literature in Medical Education (KeyLIME) Podcast. Each podcast summary includes its average length, the episode frequency, the intended audience, a brief description, a representative episode, and quotes from interviews with the podcast hosts.

Abstract:Inclusive leadership styles value team members, invite diverse perspectives, and recognize and support the contributions of employees. The authors provide guidance to radiology leaders interested in developing inclusive leadership skills and competencies to improve workforce recruitment and retention and unlock the potential of a rapidly diversifying health care workforce. As health care organizations look to attract the best and brightest talent, they will be increasingly recruiting millennial and Generation Z employees, who belong to the most diverse generations in American history. Additionally, radiology departments currently face critical workforce shortages in radiologists, radiology technicians, staff, and advanced practice providers. In the context of these shortages, the costs of employee turnover have emphasized the need for radiology leaders to develop leadership behaviors that promote recruitment and retention. Radiology department leaders who perceive and treat valued employees as replaceable commodities will be forced to deal with the extremely high costs associated with recruitment and training, decreased morale, and increased burnout. The authors review inclusive versus exclusive leadership styles, describe key attributes and skills of inclusive leaders, provide radiology leaders with concrete methods to make their organizations more inclusive, and outline key steps in change management. Educational Podcasts in Plastic Surgery: A Cross-Sectional Analysis of Content, Metrics, and Target Audiences

Abstract:Background: Podcasts provide an efficient means for asynchronous learning. However, no study to date has thoroughly assessed the landscape of educational podcasts in plastic surgery. Thus, this study aims to evaluate and characterize current educational plastic surgery podcasts to ultimately inform future efforts. Methods: Three platforms were queried for educational plastic surgery podcasts: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts. Podcast descriptions and episodes were then independently reviewed to determine primary target audiences, performance metrics, and content categories. Results: There were a total of 163 plastic surgery podcasts. 145 of these 163 podcasts were targeted toward a nonmedical audience. The remaining 18 podcasts met inclusion criteria as educational plastic surgery podcasts. Of all educational podcast episodes, 8.8% targeted a medical student audience, 33.8% targeted trainees (residents/fellows), and 57.4% targeted practicing surgeons or emphasized recent research in the field. Episode content categories included breast (14.2%), cosmetic (11.8%), experimental (0.5%), hand/peripheral nerve (8.6%), pediatric/craniofacial (8.2%), reconstructive (15.6%), practice management (14.8%), residency (6.6%), and others (19.6%). Conclusions: Despite the large number of plastic surgery podcasts available, few podcasts focus on educating a medical audience. Within this small subset, there is a paucity of content targeted towards medical students interested in plastic surgery. While there is a wide breadth of content available, there is significant room for growth and refinement in the podcast sector for plastic surgery education.
What About Empathy? A Qualitative Study Exploring the Role of a Podcast as an Asynchronous Empathy Teaching Tool

Abstract:Purpose: Though medical education podcasts are fast gaining popularity, they are overwhelmingly focused on teaching the medical expert role of physicians. We explored how medical learners and educators engaged with and learned from an empathy and communication-focused podcast and sought their recommendations for integrating the podcast into medical curricula. Methods: Six virtual, semi-structured focus groups were conducted with educators and learners within a large urban hospital and university setting. Participants were asked to listen to pre-selected episodes of the About Empathy podcast in advance. Thematic analysis was used to explore experiences and perceptions of empathy teaching and learning. Results: There were 24 participants. We identified six themes related to the podcast and empathy learning: (1) forging connection through stories, (2) creating space to reflect on empathy, (3) shifting perspectives and biases, (4) feeling validated and enabling self-compassion, (5) gaining knowledge and building skills through empathetic communication, and (6) translating new knowledge and skills into practice. Participants highlighted that the podcast's portability and asynchronous nature allowed them to be more fully present, reflective, and intentional in their learning. Discussion: The About Empathy podcast was experienced as a flexible, just-in-time tool that promoted self-agency over one's learning, reflective practice, and knowledge and skill acquisition, particularly with respect to empathic communication. Benefits of asynchronous e-learning tools such as podcasts support a shift to a blended learning model. Challenges finding a curricular home for this empathy-focused podcast require further consideration.

Although effective interprofessional teams are increasingly identified as critical to patient safety, their impact on the educational experience of learners in the clinical environment is under-recognized. Elevating Radiology Education Research Through a Dedicated Research Fellowship: Adding Professional Identity as Essential for Success

Abstract:Rationale and objectives: Education research has been undervalued in radiology, with few radiology journals having dedicated space for such research and barriers to production including dedicated time, resources, grant funding, and mentorship. As radiologists, we have an opportunity to study education in our unique learning environments and create more effective ways to teach that are grounded in established education theory, solid assessment methodologies, and a focus on merit as well as worth. Materials and methods: The growth of education research in our field requires a two-pronged approach; We must cultivate leaders in education research from within our specialty, and continue to submit high quality work to radiology journals to increase exposure of the reviewers and readership to education methodologies. Results: We have created the first radiology education research fellowship to this end. This manuscript details the fellowship creation process, the first education research fellow experience, and in-depth analysis of the inaugural year via a qualitative program review. Conclusion: We were successful in supporting an inaugural fellow in attaining the knowledge and skills to become a productive education researcher. Beyond this, the fellowship experience was a catalyst in developing her unique professional identity as an education master which will further raise the status of education research in pediatric radiology.
Anatomy podcasts for medical education

Abstract:The implementation of podcasts as a complementary educational activity increased over the past year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Being an alternative channel for transmission of anatomical knowledge, the on-demand audio broadcasts became an intriguing medium for both students and educators. This paper presents the results of a questionnaire study on the evaluation of an audio podcast designed specifically for the first-year medical students as an innovative and optional component of the human anatomy course. The audience expressed their opinions in four categories: engagement in listening to the podcast, content and preferences, technical level and perspectives of using the podcast in further years of medical studies. Despite the non-compulsory nature of the podcast, the listenership reached the level of 45%. In the study, 1608 listeners had access to the survey and the overall response rate was 35.9%. Based on the analysis, the attitude and preferences of the listeners were demonstrated, including the preferred time of listening, length of the episodes, selection of topics, format of the broadcast, or the method of its delivery. Students also commented on the influence of the podcast on passing the final exam in anatomy and a concept of recording broadcasts in a foreign language. The presented data allowed the recognition of the needs of medical students and contributed to the improvement of the ongoing project. The paper presents the technical data and guidelines for educators willing to include this medium in the students' anatomical curriculum.

Abstract:Background Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are crucial for building a just and equitable healthcare system. However, academic radiology continues to face significant underrepresentation of women and underrepresented minorities (URMs). Purpose This study examines demographic disparities in academic radiology and presents strategies for improving DEI. Materials and Methods I analyzed demographic data from various sources and reviewed successful DEI initiatives. Results My analysis revealed a significant underrepresentation of URMs and women at all stages of the radiology training pipeline, from medical school to faculty positions. I identified several challenges contributing to this underrepresentation, including implicit bias, financial barriers, and lack of mentorship. However, I also presented successful case studies of initiatives, such as the Radiology Leadership Institute and the Association of University Radiologists Mentorship Program, that are making progress in diversifying the field. Conclusions Achieving DEI in academic radiology requires a multi-pronged approach that includes early outreach, financial aid, mentorship, inclusive recruitment practices, and a focus on creating a welcoming environment. By continuously evaluating and adapting initiatives, the radiology community can create a more equitable and inclusive future for all individuals.

Abstract:All orthopaedic surgeons are leaders in the operating room and clinic, and many orthopaedic surgeons choose to pursue other formal leadership roles. Effective leaders are proficient communicators, have high emotional intelligence, have a growth mindset, create structure, and facilitate teamwork. Participating in formal leadership training offered through the American Orthopaedic Association, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, or advanced degree programs can facilitate the development of leadership skills. By setting goals, being aware of available leadership positions, and promoting diversity, senior leaders may help orthopaedic faculty to achieve senior leadership roles. Maxwell's leadership hierarchy, which consists of 5 levels of leadership (position, permission, production, people development, and pinnacle), provides a framework for the promotion and mentorship of junior partners by senior leaders. Seeking out and promoting leadership will encourage an environment of leaders and improve the field of orthopaedic surgery.

Being a trauma team leader, emergency physician in charge or clinical lead all look very different and require a range of skills, but are all certainly forms of leadership that have a significant impact on the running of an emergency department, patient outcomes and, as is increasingly being recognised, staff well-being.1 The EMLeaders programme was launched in 2018 as a collaboration between the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM), Health Education England and National Health Service (NHS) England as a structured approach to leadership development of emergency physicians in training. Although professional societies and colleges offer leadership courses, these usually focus on those who have completed training.
