Abstract:Background: The occurrence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with oxidative stress. Oxidation Balance Score (OBS) can evaluate the oxidation and antioxidant status of the body. However, we found no studies that examined the association between the two. Objective: To assess the association between OBS and COPD prevalence, and to explore dietary and lifestyle patterns aimed at preventing and delay COPD in adults. Method: We included 13,909 participants using data from the NHANES. Weighted logistic regression model and weighted restricted cubic spline curve were used to explore the relationship between OBS and COPD. Subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis were used to determine the stability of results. Mediation analysis was employed to assess the effect of inflammatory factors. Result: In logistic regression model, compared with the lowest quartile of OBS, the highest quartile of OBS, diet OBS, lifestyle OBS and COPD had odd ratios OR(95%CI)=0.67 (0.51, 0.89), OR (95% CI) = 0.71 (0.55, 0.93), and OR (95% CI) = 0.39 (0.26, 0.58) respectively. The restricted cubic spline curve reveals that OBS and dietary OBS exhibit an L-shaped curve in relation to COPD prevalence, while lifestyle OBS shows a negative correlation curve with COPD prevalence. Subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis proved the robustness of the association. Mediation analysis demonstrated that inflammatory factors mediate the association of OBS on the prevalence of COPD. Conclusion: The increase of OBS, dietary OBS, and lifestyle OBS was associated with a decrease in the prevalence of COPD, but excessive OBS and dietary OBS were associated with an inapparent decrease or even increased risk of COPD.

Abstract:Diabetes and Vascular Disease Research, Volume 21, Issue 2, March-April 2024. BackgroundThe intricate interaction between oxidative stress and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is an essential area of research because of the potential role of oxidative homeostasis in regulating ASCVD risk. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the oxidative balance score (OBS) and the 10-years risk of ASCVD to gain insight into how oxidative balance affects cardiovascular health.MethodsThis cross-sectional study analyzed National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011–2020 data (40–79 age group), exploring OBS's link to 10-years ASCVD risk. OBS categorized dietary and lifestyle factors. Multivariate logistic regression controlled for age, sex, race, and demographics. A restricted cubic spline examined linear relationships; robustness was ensured through subgroup analyses.ResultsAnalysis of 4955 participants reveals a negative association between OBS and 10-years ASCVD risk. Continuous OBS adjusted OR: 0.97 (95% CI: 0.95∼0.99, p < .001). Quartile analysis shows reduced risk in Q2 0.88 (95% CI: 0.63∼1.22, p = .43), Q3 0.92 (95% CI: 0.66∼1.28, p = .614), and Q4 0.59 (95% CI: 0.42∼0.83, p = .002) compare Q1. Quartile analysis indicated decreasing risk in higher OBS quartiles. Lifestyle OBS and Dietary OBS demonstrated similar trends. Stratified analyses highlight race and hypertension as effect modifiers (p < .05).ConclusionOur study suggests an association between higher OBS and a reduced 10-years ASCVD risk. However, causation should not be inferred, and in the future, more extensive clinical and fundamental research is required to delve deeper into this association.

Abstract:Background: The oxidative balance score (OBS), an encompassing scoring mechanism for assessing oxidative stress, is formulated based on nutritional and lifestyle components. The emergence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) is intricately linked to oxidative stress. Nonetheless, the correlation between OBS and MetS displays variability within distinct cohorts. Objective: We worked on the relationships between OBS and the risk of MetS, MetS severity, and all-cause mortality of MetS patients. Methods: A total of 11,171 adult participants were collected from the U.S. National Health Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2018. Employing survey-weighted logistic models, we evaluated the relationship between OBS and MetS risk. Furthermore, survey-weighted linear models were utilized to investigate the connection between OBS and MetS severity. Among the participants, 3,621 individuals had their survival status recorded, allowing us to employ Cox proportional hazards regression models in order to ascertain the association between OBS and the all-cause mortality within the subset of individuals with MetS. The OBS (where a higher OBS signified an increased prevalence of anti- or pro-oxidant exposures) weighed the 20 factors, while the MetS severity score weighed the five factors. Results: After multivariable adjustment, individuals with elevated OBS were found to exhibit a decreased susceptibility to MetS [odds ratio (OR) 0.95; 95% CI 0.94-0.96]. The adjusted OR was 0.42 (95% CI 0.33-0.53) for MetS risk in the fourth OBS quartile compared with those in the first OBS quartile (P for trend < 0.001). A one-unit increase in OBS was linked to a 3% reduction in MetS severity score by 3% (mean difference, -0.03; 95% CI, -0.04 to -0.03). Moreover, increased OBS correlated with decreased hazard of all-cause mortality risk among MetS subjects (adjusted hazard ratio, 0.95; 95% CI, 0.93-0.98). These associations retained their strength even subsequent to the introduction of sensitivity analyses. There existed a statistically significant negative correlation between diet/lifestyle OBS and both MetS risk as well as MetS severity. Conclusions: An inverse correlation was observed between OBS and the susceptibility to MetS, MetS severity, and all-cause mortality of MetS patients. Health outcomes for MetS patients were positively related to antioxidant diets and lifestyles.

Abstract:Background: The oxidative balance score (OBS) is a composite indicator that evaluates the balance between pro-oxidants and antioxidants in one's diet and lifestyle. However, the relationship between OBS and circadian syndrome (CircS) has remained unexplored. This investigation aimed to determine a correlation between OBS and CircS. Methods: This population-based study examined 7,202 participants from the 2005 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 1,433 of whom had CircS. We utilized weighted multivariate logistic regression, trend tests, subgroup analysis, and interaction tests to evaluate the correlation between OBS (total OBS, dietary OBS, and lifestyle OBS) and CircS. Restricted cubic splines (RCS) models and threshold effect analysis were used to explore nonlinear relationships. Results: Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that the protective factor for CircS was a high OBS level (total OBS: Odds ratio (OR) = 0.95, 95% Confidence interval (CI): 0.93-0.97; dietary OBS: OR = 0.98, 95% CI: 0.96-1.00; lifestyle OBS: OR = 0.65, 95% CI: 0.61-0.69). Compared to the quartile 1 group, OBS (total OBS, dietary OBS, and lifestyle OBS) was negatively and statistically significantly associated with the risk of developing Circs in the quartile 4 group (total OBS: OR = 0.47, 95% CI: 0.32-0.70; dietary OBS: OR = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.48-0.99; lifestyle OBS: OR = 0.07, 95% CI: 0.04-0.11). According to subgroup analysis and interaction tests, there was an interaction effect between the association of lifestyle OBS and CircS in terms of education level ( p for interaction = 0.01). Furthermore, we observed a nonlinear negative relationship between lifestyle OBS and CircS prevalence, with inflection points at 6 ( p for nonlinearity = 0.002). Conclusion: The results showed a substantial negative connection between OBS and CircS. Encouraging foods filled with antioxidants and antioxidant-rich lifestyles may reduce the risk of CircS.

Abstract:Background: Oxidative Balance Scores (OBS) is composite measures that assess the balance between pro-oxidant and antioxidant factors in an individual's diet and lifestyle. Evidence on OBS and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in diabetic patients is scarce. This study investigates the potential association between OBS and CVD-prevalence and all-cause and CVD-related mortality in adult diabetic patients. Methods: Participants were selected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2018. OBS-related data collection was initiated by linking the National Death Index to determine mortality due to all-cause and cardiovascular disease until December 31, 2019. Weighted logistic regression analyses explored the relationship between OBS and CVD. In addition, multivariable Cox proportional risk regression models and Kaplan-Meier curves were used to determine the correlation between OBS and mortality, with time to event as the time variable, as well as to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: A total of 3491 participants were included in the final analysis. Weighted logistic regression analysis of the relationship between OBS and CVD prevalence found that higher OBS was not associated with CVD prevalence compared with lower levels after fully adjustment in model 3 (OR: 0.82, 95% CI: 0.51-1.31, P = 0.39). During 3,491 person-years of follow-up, 408 deaths were recorded, of which 105 deaths were attributed to CVD. In fully adjusted model 3, participants in the highest quartile of OBS had significant reductions in all-cause mortality of 53% [HR: 0.47, 95% CI: 0.29-0.77), Ptrend= 0.002] and in cardiovascular disease mortality of 78% [HR: 0.22, 95% CI: 0.08-0.56), Ptrend= 0.004], compared with the lowest quartile groups of OBS. The Kaplan-Meier analysis results showed that participants in the highest quartile of OBS had the lowest risk of all-cause and CVD-related mortality and were statistically different (P < 0.05). Subgroup analysis confirmed that P for interaction was significant only concerning the educational level attained and in individuals with a history of CKD (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Although OBS wasn't very useful for assessing CVD prevalence outcomes, higher OBS was significantly associated with lower all-cause and CVD-related mortality, suggesting that maintaining adequate OBS may reduce mortality in patients with DM.

Abstract:Introduction: The relationship between oxidative balance score (OBS), an emerging integrative metric for assessing individual redox homeostasis, and the prevalence of stroke in the general population remains unknown. We aimed to explore these relationships in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). We investigated the relationship between the oxidative balance score (OBS) and stroke prevalence using NHANES data from 1999–2018. Methods: We included eligible individuals from NHANES 1999–2018. OBS calculations were based on previously validated methods, and stroke diagnoses were based on self-reports in questionnaires. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to examine the independent associations of overall, dietary, and lifestyle OBS with stroke prevalence. In addition, restricted cubic spline (RCS), stratified analysis, and sensitivity analysis were used. Results: We included 25,258 participants aged 20–85 years, in which the prevalence of stroke was 2.66%. After adjusting for all confounders, overall and dietary OBS, but not lifestyle OBS, were inversely associated with the prevalence of stroke [odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of 0.97 (0.96, 0.99) and 0.98 (0.96, 0.99) for overall and dietary OBS, respectively, both p < 0.05]. In addition, there was a dose-response relationship between overall and dietary OBS and stroke prevalence. The RCS showed that these relationships were linear. Stratified analyses indicated that socioeconomic status (SES) significantly influenced the relationship between all OBS and stroke prevalence. Conclusion: Dietary OBS, but not lifestyle OBS, had an inverse relationship with the prevalence of stroke in the general population. SES significantly influenced the protective effect of OBS against stroke. These findings emphasize the importance of integrated antioxidant properties from diet for stroke prevention.

Abstract:Introduction: Oxidative stress plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The oxidative balance score (OBS) was devised to quantify the overall oxidative state, integrating pro-oxidant and antioxidant influences from both dietary intake and lifestyle practices. The aim of this study was to delve into the relationship between the OBS and CKD within the adult population of the United States. Methods: Utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 2009-2018, we derived the OBS from 16 dietary and four lifestyle factors. We employed weighted multivariate regression to probe the link between OBS and CKD. Additionally, we undertook subgroup analyses and applied Restricted Cubic Spline Regression (RCS) for further data analyses. Results: This study encompassed 19,444 participants. Logistic regression analysis consistently demonstrated a protective effect of higher OBS on CKD. In Model 3, each unit increase in OBS was associated with a 2% reduction in the risk of CKD (95% CI: 0.97-0.99, p < 0.001) and a 4% reduction in the risk of reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (95% CI: 0.95-0.98, p < 0.001). The highest OBS quintile (Q4) also showed significant reductions in the risk of CKD (OR: 0.66, 95% CI: 0.53-0.82, p < 0.001) and reduced eGFR (OR: 0.51, 95% CI: 0.37-0.69, p < 0.001) in Model 3. RCS analysis revealed a linear relationship between OBS and CKD. Subgroup analyses indicated significant associations between OBS and CKD in most subgroups, except for those without hypertension or with cardiovascular disease. Additionally, interaction analyses demonstrated that age, hypertension, and diabetes significantly modify the association between OBS and CKD risk. Conclusion: An elevated OBS, reflecting a predominance of antioxidants, correlates with a diminished CKD risk in the American adult demographic. These insights emphasize the potential influence of oxidative equilibrium on the development of CKD.

Abstract:Abstract The objective of this study was to understand the clinical characteristics of endolymphatic sac tumor and to optimize its diagnosis and treatment. We carried out a retrospective review of 11 patients diagnosed as having endolymphatic sac tumor based on operative findings and pathological features, and their clinical manifestations, differential diagnosis, and surgical approaches are discussed in detail. The lesions of 10 cases were completely surgically resected, two cases via the mastoid approach, 8 cases via the oto-cervical or cranio-oto-cervical combined approach. In one case the tumor was partially removed and the patient received adjuvant radiotherapy. In operation, four cases had facial-hypoglossal neural anastomosis, two cases had great auricular nerve graft, and in four cases the facial nerve integrity remained. Survival follow-up data range from 14 months to 10 years. We conclude that endolymphatic sac tumor is very rare and easily misdiagnosed. Reasonable surgical treatment can provide a good prognosis.
Association between the oxidative balance score and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in patients with diabetes and prediabetes

Abstract:Background Few studies have examined the link between systemic oxidative stress and mortality risk in diabetes and prediabetes patients. The Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) is a novel measure of systemic oxidative stress, with higher scores indicating greater antioxidant exposure. This study investigates the relationship between OBS and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in these patients. Methods This study analyzed 10,591 diabetes and prediabetes patients from the 1999–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The endpoints were all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, determined from the National Death Index (NDI). OBS was calculated using 20 dietary and lifestyle factors. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, multivariable Cox regression models, restricted cubic splines (RCS), and subgroup analyses were used to assess the relationship between OBS and mortality risks. Results Over an average follow-up of 99.8 months, 2900 (26.4 %) participants died, including 765 (8.9 %) from cardiovascular diseases. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed the lowest all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in the highest OBS quartile (Q4) and the highest mortality in the lowest quartile (Q1) ( p < 0.001). In the fully adjusted model, multivariable Cox regression revealed that each unit increase in OBS was linked to a 1.8 % decrease in all-cause mortality risk (HR 0.982, 95 % CI 0.976–0.987, p < 0.0001) and a 4 % decrease in cardiovascular mortality risk (HR 0.960, 95 % CI 0.949–0.970, p < 0.0001). Compared to Q1, those in Q4 had significantly lower all-cause mortality (HR 0.719, 95 % CI 0.643–0.804, p < 0.0001, p for trend <0.0001) and cardiovascular mortality (HR 0.567, 95 % CI 0.455–0.705, p < 0.0001, p for trend <0.0001). These findings were consistent across subgroups. RCS curves showed a negative correlation between OBS and both mortality types. Conclusion Higher OBS is linked to reduced all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in diabetes and prediabetes patients.

Abstract:Oxidative Balance Scores (OBS) are utilized to assess an individual's antioxidant status, encompassing both dietary and lifestyle factors that contribute to oxidative balance. This study investigates the relationship between OBS and chronic kidney disease (CKD) prevalence among U.S. adults, utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007–2018. The study involved a cross-sectional analysis of 13,373 individuals from NHANES, focusing on adults aged 20 years or older. OBS was calculated using 20 components, including dietary and lifestyle factors. CKD was identified based on albumin-to-creatinine ratio and estimated glomerular filtration rate, with patients stratified into mild, moderate, and high-risk groups. Statistical analysis included logistic regression models and restricted cubic splines to explore the OBS-CKD relationship. Our findings indicate a statistically significant negative correlation between OBS and CKD prevalence, particularly in mild and moderate-risk groups. Higher OBS quartiles were associated with a decreased likelihood of CKD (OR 0.70; 95% CI 0.53–0.92; P = 0.013). Restricted cubic splines indicated a non-linear, inverse association between OBS and CKD odds for the overall population (P for nonlinearity = 0.017). For mild and moderate CKD risk groups, the relationships were less pronounced (P for nonlinearity = 0.053 and 0.184, respectively), suggesting variability in the OBS-CKD link across different risk levels. The study highlights the potential of elevated OBS as a primary prevention measure for CKD, particularly in individuals with mild to moderate risk. These findings underscore the importance of antioxidant status in CKD risk management and encourage further research into the role of dietary and lifestyle factors in CKD prevention.

Abstract:Background: The Oxidative Balance Score (OBS), which quantifies the balance between antioxidants and pro-oxidants influenced by diet and lifestyle, is crucial given oxidative stress's significant role in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). This study aims to determine the association between OBS and CKD using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2018. Methods: We analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 1999 to 2018. OBS was constructed from a detailed array of 20 factors, including dietary nutrients and lifestyle behaviors. The relationship between OBS and CKD risk was evaluated using weighted logistic regression models, adjusted for potential confounders, with a generalized additive model (GAM) examining non-linear associations. Subgroup analyses and interaction effects across diverse demographic and clinical groups, along with sensitivity analyses, were performed to validate the findings. Results: Among 32,120 participants analyzed, 4,786 were identified with CKD. Fully adjusted weighted logistic regression analysis revealed that each unit increase in OBS was associated with a 2% reduction in CKD prevalence [OR: 0.98 (0.98–0.99), P < 0.001]. Higher OBS quartiles were significantly correlated with a decreased CKD risk [Q4 vs . Q1: OR: 0.82 (0.68–0.98), P = 0.03; P for trend = 0.01]. The GAM and smoothed curve fit indicated a linear relationship between OBS and the risk of CKD. Stratified and sensitivity analyses further substantiated the inverse relationship between OBS and CKD prevalence. Conclusions: Our findings from the NHANES data affirm a significant inverse association between OBS and CKD risk in the U.S. population, underscoring the role of optimizing dietary and lifestyle factors in managing CKD risk. These results advocate for incorporating OBS considerations into CKD prevention and treatment strategies.

Abstract:Objective: Oxidative stress assumes a crucial role throughout the entire trajectory of hypertensive patients. This study aimed to evaluate the association between oxidative balance score (OBS) and all-cause mortality among hypertensive patients. Design and method: We conducted a cohort study, including 9,735 hypertensive patients from the NHANES spanning from 2007 to 2018. Relevant mortality data were linked until December 2019. The burden of oxidation balance was derived through computation of the OBS. It was obtained by assessing the levels of 15 antioxidants and 5 pro-oxidants for each gender. Survey-weighted multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression and Kaplan-Meier survival curves were employed to examine the association between OBS and all-cause mortality. Restricted cubic spline was used to investigate whether there is a nonlinear relationship between OBS and all-cause mortality in hypertensive patients. Moreover, we conducted a subgroup analysis taking into consideration age, gender, BMI, and history of diabetes. Patients who died within two years of follow-up were excluded for sensitivity analysis to verify the robustness of the results. Results: After a median follow-up period of 79 months, 973 hypertensive patients experienced all-cause deaths (9.99%). We found that every 5 scores increment in OBS was associated with an 11% reduction in the risk of all-cause mortality (HR = 0.89, 95% CI: 0.82-0.98). Restricted cubic spline failed to yield evidence supporting a nonlinear association between OBS and all-cause mortality (P nonlinear = 0.181). After stratifying the OBS into tertiles, it was found that the highest OBS group had a significantly lower risk of all-cause mortality compared to the lowest group (HR=0.72, 95% CI: 0.54 to 0.96, p for trend=0.025). Subgroup analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between OBS and all-cause mortality among individuals aged 60 years and above, males, with BMI<25kg/m2 and those without diabetes. Sensitivity analysis suggested that our results remained stable. Conclusions: Higher OBS was significantly associated with decreased all-cause mortality in adults with hypertension. OBS could serve as a prognostic assessment tool in ameliorating prognosis and enhancing survival outcomes. increasing antioxidant levels is an effective strategy to prevent the risk of all-cause mortality in hypertensive patients.

Abstract:Background: The Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) is a systematic tool to assess the effects of diet and lifestyle in relation to oxidative stress. The association between OBS and gout has not been reported previously. We conducted a cross-sectional study to investigate the complex association between OBS and gout in US adults. Methods: In all, 10 492 participants were included in this study. The exposure variable was OBS, which was scored by 16 dietary and four lifestyle factors. Multivariate logistic regression, subgroup analysis, and restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression were used to analyze the association between OBS and gout. Results: Compared with the lowest OBS quartile group (Q1), the multivariate corrected odds ratio (OR) (95% confidence interval [C]) for the highest quartile of OBS (Q4) was 0.72 (0.52-1.00) (p = .13 for trend); furthermore, the RCS showed a negative linear relationship between OBS and gout (p-nonlinear = .606). Conclusion: In conclusion, the risk of gout is higher with high OBS. The prevalence of gout decreased with higher OBS. Diabetes may alter this negative correlation.

Abstract:Background: Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) is a novel indicator of the overall antioxidant/oxidant balance, providing a comprehensive reflection of the body's overall oxidative stress status, with higher OBS suggesting more substantial antioxidant exposures. We aimed to investigate the possible relationship between OBS with serum uric acid (SUA) and hyperuricemia. Methods: Data utilized in this study were sourced from the 2011–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Participants under 18 years old, those with ≤16 complete data out of 20 OBS components, incomplete serum uric acid data, and missing covariates were excluded from the analysis. OBS was computed by evaluating 16 nutrients and 4 lifestyle factors, encompassing 5 pro-oxidants and 15 antioxidants, guided by a priori knowledge of their relationship with oxidative stress. Results: A total of 1,5096 individuals were included in our analysis with 49.7% being male, and an average age of 49.05 ± 17.56 years. The mean OBS was 19.76 ± 7.17. Hyperuricemia was present in 19.28% of participants. Due to the right-skewed distribution of the OBS, a natural log transformation was applied to address this issue, and Quartiles of lnOBS 1, 2, 3, and 4 were 1.10–2.56 (N=3526), 2.64–2.94 (N=3748), 3.00–3.22 (N=4026), and 3.26–3.61 (N=3796), respectively. Multivariable logistic regression showed that higher lnOBS quantiles were correlated with lower serum uric acid levels. Compared with the lowest lnOBS quantile, participants in the highest lnOBS quantile had a significant serum uric acid decrease of 16.94 μmol/L for each unit increase in lnOBS (β=-16.94, 95% CI: -20.44, -13.45). Similar negative associations were observed in the second-highest (β=-8.07, 95% CI: -11.45, -4.69) and third-highest (β=-11.69, 95% CI: -15.05, -8.34) lnOBS quantiles. The adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for hyperuricemia in Quartiles 1, 2, 3, and 4 were 1.00, 0.84 (95% CI: 0.75, 0.95), 0.78 (95% CI: 0.69, 0.88), and 0.62 (95% CI: 0.55, 0.71), respectively. Compared to Quartile 1, participants in Quartile 4 had a 38% lower prevalence of hyperuricemia. Subgroup analysis and interaction test showed that there was a significant dependence of sex between OBS and serum uric acid (p for interaction 0.05). Subgroup analysis stratified by age, BMI, hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia showed there is no significant dependence on these negative correlations (all p for interaction >0.05). Conclusions: The serum uric acid levels and prevalence of hyperuricemia in US adults exhibited a negative association with OBS. By exploring this connection, our research aims to gain a better understanding of how oxidative balance affects the prevalence of hyperuricemia. This could provide valuable insights for developing preventive strategies and interventions for hyperuricemia. Additional large-scale prospective studies are required to explore the role of OBS in hyperuricemia further.

Abstract:Objective: Few studies have examined the relationship between systemic oxidative stress and prostate cancer (PCa) risk. This study aimed to explore potential correlations between PCa and oxidative balance score (OBS), which measures systemic oxidative stress. Design: A cross-sectional study. Setting: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Participants: A total of 8156 individuals were included in this study. Primary and secondary outcome measures: Weighted logistic regression with multivariable adjustment and restricted cubic splines (RCS) were used to assess the correlation between PCa and OBS. A sensitivity analysis was conducted specifically on patients with PCa to verify the results. Results: The prevalence of PCa was 2.55%. The multivariable logistic regression model revealed no correlation between OBS, dietary OBS, lifestyle OBS and PCa. Compared with the lowest quartile of OBS, the adjusted ORs for the highest quartile of OBS, dietary OBS and lifestyle OBS were 1.852 (95% CI 1.028-3.339), 1.565 (95% CI 0.841-2.913) and 1.575 (95% CI 0.915-2.710), respectively. Additionally, all p values for trend were greater than 0.05. Subgroup analysis revealed a consistent lack of association between OBS and PCa across various population settings. Furthermore, analysis using RCS confirmed this absence of association, indicating no significant relationship in either a linear or non-linear context. A sensitivity analysis focusing exclusively on patients with PCa showed a strong association (OR=2.737, p=0.008). Conclusion: This cross-sectional study reveals no significant association between systemic oxidative stress, measured by OBS, and PCa risk. Notably, a sensitivity analysis focusing solely on PCa patients suggested a potential link, warranting further investigation.

Abstract:Background: Oxidative stress is closely associated with hypertensive outcomes. The oxidative balance score (OBS) measures oxidative stress exposure from dietary and lifestyle elements. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between OBS and mortality in hypertensive patients. Methods: This study included 7823 hypertensive patients from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2014. Several models, including Cox regression, restricted cubic splines (RCS), Kaplan‒Meier survival analysis, subgroup, and sensitivity analyses, were exploited to investigate the relationship between OBS and the risk of mortality. Results: Controlling for all potential confounders, a significantly inverse association was observed between elevated OBS and all-cause [hazard ratio (HR) = 0.90, 95% CI: 0.85-0.95] and cardiovascular mortality (HR = 0.85, 95% CI: 0.75-0.95). With adjustment for covariates, significant associations between lifestyle OBS and mortality risks diminished, whereas associations between dietary OBS and these mortality risks remained robust (all-cause mortality: HR = 0.91, 95% CI: 0.86-0.96; cardiovascular mortality: HR = 0.85, 95% CI: 0.76-0.96). RCS demonstrated a linear relationship between OBS and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality risk (P nonlinear = 0.088 and P nonlinear = 0.447, respectively). Kaplan‒Meier curves demonstrated that the mortality rate was lower with a high OBS (P < 0.001). The consistency of the association was demonstrated in subgroup and sensitivity analyses. RCS after stratification showed that among current drinkers, those with higher OBS had a lower risk of mortality compared with former or never drinkers. Conclusions: In hypertensive individuals, there was a negative association between OBS and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Encouraging hypertensive individuals, especially those currently drinking, to maintain high levels of OBS may be beneficial in improving their prognosis.

Abstract:Oxidative stress strongly influences the pathophysiology of erectile dysfunction (ED). In this study, we used the oxidative balance score (OBS), a composite index, to measure the effects of oxidative stress triggered by diet and lifestyle factors. Here, we conducted a cross-sectional study to determine the statistical relationship between OBS and ED among adult males in the U.S. The data from 3318 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001–2004 were analyzed. Weighted logistic regression was used to correct for confounding factors and acquire nationwide representative estimates. Generalized additive modeling was used to explore the nonlinear relationship. We also supplemented subgroup and sensitivity analysis to examine the robustness of the main results. Multivariate logistic regression indicated a consistent negative linear association between OBS and ED across all participants [OR (95% CI) = 0.96 (0.94, 0.98)]. After categorizing OBS into tertiles, participants in the highest tertile had 43% lower odds of having ED than those in the lowest tertile [OR (95% CI) = 0.57 (0.37, 0.87)]. The generalized additive model also visualized the linear trend of this association. Furthermore, this linear relationship remained relatively consistent, regardless of whether subgroup or sensitivity analyses were performed. Our findings suggest that adopting a lifestyle and diet pattern that promotes favorable OBS may effectively protect against the development of ED, regardless of the underlying causes.

Abstract:Background: The Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) is commonly used to assess oxidative stress and provides a comprehensive evaluation of dietary and lifestyle-related exposures. However, there is limited research on the association between OBS and colorectal cancer (CRC), its subsites, and complications. The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between OBS and the risk of CRC, its subsites, and common complications in a large prospective cohort study. Methods: We included data from 175,808 participants in the UK Biobank data sample repository from 2006 to 2010. We evaluated OBS using a scoring system based on 22 dietary and lifestyle factors. Multiple adjustments, including multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression, gender stratification, subgroup analysis, and sensitivity analysis, were performed to fully explore the relationship between OBS and CRC, its subsites, and complications. The mediation analysis was conducted to investigate whether serum albumin, uric acid, and neutrophil levels mediate the relationship between OBS and CRC. Results: After adjusting for potential confounding factors, a significant negative correlation was found between OBS and the risk of CRC and its subsites (proximal colon cancer, distal colon cancer, and rectal cancer). This correlation was particularly pronounced in male CRC patients. Serum albumin, uric acid, and neutrophil count, which are biomarkers, were found to have a significant mediating effect between OBS and CRC. Conclusion: Our study suggests that higher exposure to antioxidants assessed through OBS (diet and lifestyle rich in antioxidants) may decrease the occurrence of CRC and its subsites.

Abstract:Background The Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) was created to evaluate an individual's overall antioxidant status. The objective of this study was to examine the association between OBS and abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) among individuals aged ≥ 40 years. Methods This population-based cross-sectional study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2013–2014 and included adults aged ≥ 40 years. Survey-weighted multivariable logistic and restricted cubic spline models were used to assess the association between OBS and AAC. Results Among 2520 participants, 744 were diagnosed with AAC (weighted percentage, 28.13%). Survey-weighted multivariable logistic revealed an inverse association between OBS and AAC [0.98 (0.96, 1.00)], and the nonlinear dose-response relationship was observed. Subgroup analysis and interaction tests revealed that this inverse relationship was consistent across different populations (all P for interaction > 0.05). Conclusions OBS was inversely associated with the prevalence of AAC among individuals aged ≥ 40 years. Maintaining a higher OBS may be beneficial in reducing the burden of AAC.
