Abstract:Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile) infection is the most common cause of healthcare–associated infection and an important cause of morbidity and mortality among hospitalized patients. A comprehensive understanding of C. difficile infection (CDI) pathogenesis is crucial for disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. Here, we characterized gut microbial compositions and a broad panel of innate and adaptive immunological markers in 243 well-characterized human subjects (including 187 subjects with both microbiota and immune marker data), who were divided into four phenotype groups: CDI, Asymptomatic Carriage, Non-CDI Diarrhea, and Control. We found that the interactions between gut microbiota and host immune markers are very sensitive to the status of C. difficile colonization and infection. We demonstrated that incorporating both gut microbiome and host immune marker data into classification models can better distinguish CDI from other groups than can either type of data alone. Our classification models display robust diagnostic performance to differentiate CDI from Asymptomatic carriage (AUC~0.916), Non-CDI Diarrhea (AUC~0.917), or Non-CDI that combines all other three groups (AUC~0.929). Finally, we performed symbolic classification using selected features to derive simple mathematic formulas that explicitly quantify the interactions between the gut microbiome and host immune markers. These findings support the potential roles of gut microbiota and host immune markers in the pathogenesis of CDI. Our study provides new insights for a microbiome-immune marker-derived signature to diagnose CDI and design therapeutic strategies for CDI.

Abstract:Clostridioides difficile, a nosocomial pathogen, is an emerging gut pathobiont causing antibiotic-associated diarrhea. C. difficile infection involves gut colonization and disruption of the gut epithelial barrier, leading to the induction of inflammatory/immune responses. The expression of two major exotoxins, TcdA and TcdB is the major cause of C. difficile pathogenicity. Attachment of bacterial abundant cell wall proteins or surface S-layer proteins (SLPs) such as SlpA with host epithelial cells is critical for virulence. In addition to being toxins, these surface components have been shown to be highly immunogenic. Recent studies indicate that C. difficile SLPs play important roles in the adhesion of the bacteria to the intestinal epithelial cells, disruption of tight junctions, and modulation of the immune response of the host cells. These proteins might serve as new targets for vaccines and new therapeutic agents. This review summarizes our current understanding of the immunological role of SLPs in inducing host immunity and their use in the development of vaccines and novel therapeutics to combat C. difficile infection.
Epidemiological and clinical characteristics of Clostridium difficile infection in patients with refractory inflammatory bowel disease

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To explore the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of Clostridium difficile infections in patients with refractory inflammatory bowel disease so as to provide guidance for clinical prevention and treatment of the C.difficile infections.METHODS A total of 92 patients with refractory inflammatory bowel disease who were treated in hospitals from Jan 2013 to Jan 2016 were enrolled in the study,the prevalence of C.difficile infections in stools was detected by using fluorescent enzyme immunoassay,and the clinical characteristics of the refractory inflammatory bowel disease patients with C.difficile infections were observed.RESULTS The incidence rate of C.difficile infections was 20.5％ in the patients with refractory inflammatory bowel disease,20.83 ％ in the patients with ulcerative colitis,20.45 ％ in the patients with Crohn disease.The incidence rate of C.difficile infections was significantly increased in the patients with refractory inflammatory bowel disease who used antibiotics,vancomycin,or were in active stage (P＜0.05).The incidence rate of C.difficile infections was 44.44％ in the patients with severe ulcerative colitis,5.56％ in the patients with moderate ulcerative colitis,8.33％ in the patients with mild ulcerative colitis,and there was significant difference (P＜0.05).The incidence rate of C.difficile infection was significantly increased in the patients with colon involved (P＜0.05);the incidence rate of C.difficile infections was significantly increased in the Crohn disease patients with colon involved (P＜0.05).CONCLUSION The incidence rate of C.difficile infections is relatively high in the patients with refractory inflammatory bowel disease,which is associated with the use of antibiotics,vancomycin,range of motion,severity of disease,and colon involvement.

Abstract:C. difficile is the primary cause for nosocomial infective diarrhoea. For a successful infection, C. difficile must navigate between resident gut bacteria and the harsh host environment. The perturbation of the intestinal microbiota by broad-spectrum antibiotics alters the composition and the geography of the gut microbiota, deterring colonization resistance, and enabling C. difficile to colonize. This review will discuss how C. difficile interacts with and exploits the microbiota and the host epithelium to infect and persist. We provide an overview of C. difficile virulence factors and their interactions with the gut to aid adhesion, cause epithelial damage and mediate persistence. Finally, we document the host responses to C. difficile , describing the immune cells and host pathways that are associated and triggered during C. difficile infection.
Preservation of the Innate Immune Response to Clostridioides difficile Infection in Hospitalized Immunocompromised Patients

Abstract:Abstract Background Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) immune response is influenced by the innate and adaptive (humoral) immune systems. Our prior research found attenuated humoral responses to C difficile in immunocompromised hosts (ICHs) with CDI. We sought to evaluate whether the innate immune response to CDI was influenced by ICH status. Methods We conducted a prospective study of hospitalized adults with CDI (acute diarrhea, positive C difficile stool nucleic acid amplification testing [NAAT], and decision to treat), with and without immunosuppression and measured a panel of cytokines (granulocyte colony-stimulating factor [G-CSF], interleukin [IL]–10, IL-15, IL-1β, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor–α) in blood and stool at CDI diagnosis. Results were compared with measurements from a cohort of asymptomatic carrier patients (ASCs) (NAAT positive, without diarrhea) with and without immunocompromise. Results One hundred twenty-three subjects (42 ICHs, 50 non-ICHs, 31 ASCs) were included. Median values for blood and stool cytokines were similar in ICH versus non-ICH CDI subjects. In blood, G-CSF, IL-10, IL-15, IL-6, and IL-8 were higher in both groups of CDI subjects versus the ASC cohort (P < .05). In stool, IL-1β and IL-8 were higher in both groups of CDI subjects versus the ASC cohort (P < .05). Median stool concentrations of IL-1β demonstrated significant differences between the groups (ICHs, 10.97 pg/mL; non-ICHs, 9.71 pg/mL; and ASCs, 0.56 pg/mL) (P < .0001). Conclusions In this small exploratory analysis, ICH status did not significantly impact blood and fecal patterns of cytokines in humans at the diagnosis of CDI, suggesting that the innate immune response to C difficile may be conserved in immunocompromised patients.

Abstract:Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is a common nosocomial infection and is an urgent threat to public health. Vancomycin is the preferred antibiotic treatment for CDI but is associated with recurrence. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG is an adjunctive treatment for gastroenteritis and diarrhea and exerts its effects by modulating the immune responses and repairing the intestinal barrier. This study explored the effect of LGG on restoring the intestinal microbiota in mouse models. Primary and recurrent CDI models were constructed, and LGG was administered to C57BL/6 mice. Structural changes in the mouse gut microbiota were determined using 16S rRNA gene analysis based on Illumina sequencing. In the CDI model, 6 days after infection, 33.3% mortality, significant weight loss and colonic injury were observed. LGG can ameliorate these events. In the R-CDI mouse model, vancomycin combined with LGG prevented weight loss, improved the histopathological scores, and effectively reduced the mortality. LGG + vancomycin administration promoted the recovery of the intestinal flora by inhibiting Enterococcus and counteracting the side effects of vancomycin treatment. In both the preventive and therapeutic CDI mouse models, the oral LGG strain showed the ability to protect against primary and recurrent infections, indicating that probiotics have potential for treating intestinal diseases. Overall, these observations suggest that LGG can be applied as a preventive treatment for CDI or in combination with antibiotics to reduce recurrence.
Compelling Evidence that Exposure Therapy for PTSD Normalizes Brain Function.

Abstract:Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is helping us better understand the neurologic pathways involved in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We previously reported that military service members with PTSD after deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan demonstrated significant improvement, or normalization, in the fMRI-measured activation of the amygdala, prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate gyrus following exposure therapy for PTSD. However, our original study design did not include repeat scans of control participants, rendering it difficult to discern how much of the observed normalization in brain activity is attributable to treatment, rather than merely a practice effect. Using the same Affective Stroop task paradigm, we now report on a larger sample of PTSD-positive combat veterans that we treated with exposure therapy, as well as a combat-exposed control group of service members who completed repeat scans at 3-4 month intervals. Findings from the treatment group are similar to our prior report. Combat controls showed no significant change on repeat scanning, indicating that the observed differences in the intervention group were in fact due to treatment. We continue to scan additional study participants, in order to determine whether virtual reality exposure therapy has a different impact on regional brain activation than other therapies for PTSD.

Abstract:Patients with hepatic cirrhosis are more susceptible to Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) and colonization with Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile). Asymptomatic C. difficile colonization is thought to predispose to subsequent CDI. However, the dynamic gut microbiota changes remain unclear. In this study, we used 16S rRNA gene sequencing to longitudinally monitor alterations in the intestinal microbiota of 22 hepatic cirrhosis patients with toxigenic C. difficile colonization at admission (pre-CDI) and developed CDI during hospitalization, subdivided into pre-CDI and CDI. 21 hospitalized cirrhotic patients without C. difficile colonization served as controls (HC). Compared with HC, pre-CDI and CDI samples had significantly decreased microbial richness and diversity, a significantly higher relative abundance of opportunistic pathogen Enterococcus, and a lower relative abundance of beneficial symbionts, such as Faecalibacterium, Dorea, and Roseburia. Three biomarkers showed high accuracy for distinguishing pre-CDI samples from HC with an area under the curve (AUC) up to 0.81. In conclusion, our study explored the changes of the gut microbiome before and after CDI. The gut microbial richness as well as diversity in CDI patients were notably reduced, relative to controls. Imbalance of the intestinal flora may be related to the risk for development of CDI. Identifying key members of the gut microbiota and illustrating their roles and mechanisms of action in CDI development are important avenues for future research.
Impacts of Infection with Different Toxigenic Clostridium Difficile Strains on Faecal Microbiota in Children.

Abstract:Increasing evidence suggests that altered intestinal microbial composition and function result in an increased risk of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhoea (CDAD); however, the specific changes of intestinal microbiota in children suffering from CDAD and their associations with C. difficile strain toxigenicity are poorly understood. High-throughput pyrosequencing showed that reduced faecal bacterial diversity and dramatic shifts of microbial composition were found in children with CDAD. The Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio was increased significantly in patients with CDAD, which indicated that dysbiosis of faecal microbiota was closely associated with CDAD. C. difficile infection resulted in an increase in lactate-producing phylotypes, with a corresponding decrease in butyrate-producing bacteria. The decrease in butyrate and lactate buildup impaired intestinal colonisation resistance, which increased the susceptibility to C. difficile colonisation. Strains of C. difficile which were positive for both toxin A and toxin B reduced faecal bacterial diversity to a greater degree than strains that were only toxin B-positive, and were associated with unusually abundant Enterococcus, which implies that the C. difficile toxins have different impacts on the faecal microbiota of children. Greater understanding of the relationships between disruption of the normal faecal microbiota and colonisation with C. difficile that produces different toxins might lead to improved treatment.

Abstract:Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile) is a common cause of antibiotic-induced diarrhea and causes the highest number of nosocomial infections. Only two antibiotics are currently recommended for treating C. difficile infection (CDI), which may contribute to unsatisfactory treatment outcomes and an increased likelihood of recurrence. Clostridioides difficile exists as a non-pathogenic member of the human intestinal microbiome in 10-20% of the population, a phenomenon observed in mouse models after infection with bacterial spores. In this study, we aim to evaluate the difference in gene expression between symptomatic and asymptomatic mice after infection with C. difficile using spa-tial transcriptomics analysis. We also aim to evaluate the spatial aspect of altered genes between different layers of intestinal mucosa (superficial vs deep) and identify the key pathways. Forma-lin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) intestinal sections were utilized for analysis using NanoStringTM platform to evaluate differential gene expressions in the caecum and colon. The IL-17 pathway, including Lcn2, Cxcl2, and S100a8 genes, was significantly upregulated in symptomatic mice. The IL-17 signaling pathway activated downstream signaling through NF-κB and MAPK pathways. Gene expression was significantly altered between the intestinal superficial and deep mucosal layers, highlighting layer-specific differences in gene expression patterns in the intestines of symptomatic and asymptomatic mice. Gene expression patterns in the enteric mucosa explain several clinical signs and lesions in CDI mice.

Abstract:Objectives: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are susceptible to Clostridioides difficile in-fection (CDI), resulting in poor outcomes and recurrence; therefore, the molecular characterization of C. difficile in IBD patients in China needs further investigation. Methods: C. difficile strains were isolated and identified from faecal samples of adult and paediatric IBD patients. Toxigenic strains were typed using multilocus sequence typing and whole genomic sequencing (WGS) to construct the phylogenetic tree. Susceptibility to 10 antimicrobials was evaluated using the Etest. Results: Among the 838 IBD patients, 82 toxigenic C. difficile were identified, which comprised 46 from adults and 36 children. A total of 90.2% (74/82) of the isolates were positive for both toxin A and toxin B genes (A + B + ), whereas the remaining 9.8% were negative for toxin A gene but positive for toxin B gene (A-B + ). These toxigenic strains were susceptible to metronidazole and vancomycin, but highly resistant to clindamycin, erythromycin, and fluoroquinolones. All moxifloxacin-resistant isolates had mutations re-sulting in an amino acid substitution in gryA (T82I). The dominant types were ST-35 (20.7%), ST-2 (17.1%), ST-54 (13.4%), and ST-3 (13.4%) in all patients. Conclusion: The incidence and molecular epidemiology of C. difficile infection in adult IBD patients re-sembled CDI in the general inpatient population. A higher antibiotic resistance rate was identified among the C. difficile isolates obtained from paediatric IBD patients than from adult patients, and a few STs ac-counted for most multidrug-resistant strains. However, the molecular genetic features of the same ST type between these two groups remains highly correlated. (c) 2022 The Authors. Abstract:Clostridioides difficile is the main causative agent of antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) in hospitals in the developed world. Both infected patients and asymptomatic colonized individuals represent important transmission sources of C. difficile. C. difficile infection (CDI) shows a large range of symptoms, from mild diarrhea to severe manifestations such as pseudomembranous colitis. Epidemiological changes in CDIs have been observed in the last two decades, with the emergence of highly virulent types and more numerous and severe CDI cases in the community. C. difficile interacts with the gut microbiota throughout its entire life cycle, and the C. difficile's role as colonizer or invader largely depends on alterations in the gut microbiota, which C. difficile itself can promote and maintain. The restoration of the gut microbiota to a healthy state is considered potentially effective for the prevention and treatment of CDI. Besides a fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), many other approaches to re-establishing intestinal eubiosis are currently under investigation. This review aims to explore current data on C. difficile and gut microbiota changes in colonized individuals and infected patients with a consideration of the recent emergence of highly virulent C. difficile types, with an overview of the microbial interventions used to restore the human gut microbiota.

Abstract:Clostridioides difficile, a Gram-positive anaerobic bacterium, is the leading cause of hospital-acquired antibiotic-associated diarrhea worldwide. The severity of C. difficile infection (CDI) varies, ranging from mild diarrhea to life-threatening conditions such as pseudomembranous colitis and toxic megacolon. Central to the pathogenesis of the infection are toxins produced by C. difficile, with toxin A (TcdA) and toxin B (TcdB) as the main virulence factors. Additionally, some strains produce a third toxin known as C. difficile transferase (CDT). Toxins damage the colonic epithelium, initiating a cascade of cellular events that lead to inflammation, fluid secretion, and further tissue damage within the colon. Mechanistically, the toxins bind to cell surface receptors, internalize, and then inactivate GTPase proteins, disrupting the organization of the cytoskeleton and affecting various Rho-dependent cellular processes. This results in a loss of epithelial barrier functions and the induction of cell death. The third toxin, CDT, however, functions as a binary actin-ADP-ribosylating toxin, causing actin depolymerization and inducing the formation of microtubule-based protrusions. In this review, we summarize our current understanding of the interaction between C. difficile toxins and host cells, elucidating the functional consequences of their actions. Furthermore, we will outline how this knowledge forms the basis for developing innovative, toxin-based strategies for treating and preventing CDI.

Abstract:Introduction: Clostridium difficile infection always manifests as diarrhea associated with antibiotic use. Nevertheless, extraintestinal infections caused by C. difficile are reported. The current report was on a case of C. difficile bacteremia in a 51-year-old male patient with appendiceal perforation and abscess as well as confirmed cirrhosis. Case Presentation: The patient was admitted to the infectious diseases department with repeated abdominal pain associated with fever. His anaerobic blood culture was positive for C. difficile two days after transarterial chemoembolization. The same toxin strain was isolated from stool four days later. Both of the two isolates were confirmed positive for toxin A (tcd A) and toxin B (tcd B) genes by polymerase chain reaction, and identified as ST3 by multiple locus sequence typing. The two strains showed the same susceptibility to the tested antibiotics. The patient was treated with vancomycin intravenously, and got remitted shortly after that. The patient was discharged with good general health conditions and followed up. Conclusions: A patient with C. difficile bacteremia presenting with appendiceal perforation and abscess as well as confirmed cirrhosis was described, and the microbiological and molecular biological analysis suggested that C. difficile strains isolated from blood came from gut. It is necessary that clinicians detect C. difficile and/or toxins in patients with long terms antibiotic therapy, in case of transformation of intestinal flora, which could cause the infection outside the intestinal tract.

Abstract:Gut microbiota dysbiosis increases the susceptibility to Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI). In this study, we monitored C. difficile colonization (CDC) patients from no CDC status (CDN) to CDC status (CDCp) and CDI patients from asymptomatic status before CDI (PRECDI), CDI status (ONCDI), to asymptomatic status after CDI (POSTCDI). Based on metagenomic sequencing, we aimed to investigate the interaction pattern between gut microbiota and C. difficile. There was no significant difference of microbiota diversity between CDN and CDCp. In CDCp, Bacteroidetes and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)-producing bacteria increased, with a positive correlation between SCFA-producing bacteria and C. difficile colonization. Compared with PRECDI, ONCDI and POSTCDI showed a significant decrease in microbiota diversity, particularly in Bacteroidetes and SCFA-producing bacteria, with a positive correlation between opportunistic pathogen and C. difficile. Fatty acid metabolism, and amino acid biosynthesis were enriched in CDN, CDCp, and PRECDI, while bile secretion was enriched in ONCDI and POSTCDI. Microbiota and metabolic pathways interaction networks in CDN and CDCp were more complex, particularly pathways in fatty acid and bile acid metabolism. Increasing of Bacteroidetes and SCFA-producing bacteria, affecting amino acid and fatty acid metabolism, is associated with colonization resistance to C. difficile and inhibiting the development of CDI.

Abstract:Fecal microbial transplantation provides a high curative rate for recurrent Clostridium difficile infection (CDI). However, limitations associated with FMT drive the need to identify key taxa for selective probiotic therapy for prevention, treatment and cure of human CDI. CDI-associated changes in gut microbiota were investigated in adult patients in the Western countries and among infant population in China. However, there has been no such study involving adult patients in China. Therefore, using high throughput sequencing of the 16S ribosomal RNA V3 region and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, we identified CDI-associated key taxa by comparing the fecal microbiota composition of 15 adult patients with CDI with those of 18 individuals with C. difficile-negative nosocomial diarrhea (CDN) and 25 healthy control subjects. Reduced fecal bacterial diversity and dramatic shifts of intestinal microbial composition in CDI and CDN groups were observed compared with healthy controls. Putative butyrate-producing anaerobic bacteria were significantly depleted whereas endotoxin-producing opportunistic pathogens and lactate-producing phylotypes increased dramatically in patients with CDI compared with healthy controls. Further screening of specific microbes causing diarrheal diseases and resistance against CDI is necessary.

Abstract:Clostridioides difficile is an anaerobic, spore-forming bacterium associated with intestinal infection, manifesting a broad spectrum of gastrointestinal symptoms, ranging from mild diarrhea to severe colitis. A primary risk factor for the development of C. difficile infection (CDI) is antibiotic exposure. Elderly and immunocompromised individuals are particularly vulnerable to CDI. A pivotal aspect for comprehending the complexities of this infection relies on the utilization of experimental models that mimic human CDI transmission, pathogenesis, and progression. These models offer invaluable insights into host–pathogen interactions and disease dynamics, and serve as essential tools for testing potential therapeutic approaches. In this review, we examine the animal model for CDI and delineate the stages of infection, with a specific focus on mice. Our objective is to offer an updated description of experimental models employed in the study of CDI, emphasizing both their strengths and limitations.

Abstract:Dups et al. (1) assess how antibody and B cell responses to Plasmodium sporozoites may function as protective immune responses. They cover immune induction quite extensively but discuss virtually nothing on effector mechanisms of antibody responses against sporozoites. Because their review should be balanced by reference to studies describing effector mechanisms, this commentary will confine itself to recounting some of these. In vitro exposure to serum from immunized mice results in an antibody-mediated precipitant projecting from sporozoites (2). Because of the striking way in which immune serum deformed sporozoites, this “CSP” reaction was postulated to be the basis for a humoral component of immunity against sporozoites. In vitro inhibition of sporozoite motility by serum from immune animals subsequently suggested that anti-sporozoite antibodies can function by blocking sporozoite motility (3). Further in vitro studies showed that monoclonal antibodies against the CS antigen blocked in vitro invasion by sporozoites into target cells (4, 5). Subsequent intravital studies revealed in vivo inhibition of sporozoite motility and inhibition of sporozoite invasion of dermal blood vessels by antibodies (6). And an association between high levels of CS antibodies and protection was shown in the first successful human immunization with radiation-attenuated sporozoites (7). Anti-sporozoite antibodies act even earlier during challenge by mosquito bite, by inhibiting release of sporozoites from the mosquito proboscis into skin (8). This appears to be the initial manifestation of functional immunity against pre-erythrocytic malaria parasites. Analysis of kinetics of Plasmodium berghei sporozoites injected by mosquitoes into sporozoite-immunized vs. non-immunized mice showed significantly fewer sporozoites were deposited in immune mice (8). CS protein is released by sporozoites into media in vitro (9) and into saliva within salivary glands of infected mosquitoes (10, 11). Thus, CS protein released into mosquito saliva together with sporozoites is injected into hosts while mosquitoes probe for blood meals. This mosquito-injected CS protein appears to interact with homologous anti-CSP antibodies within immunized hosts at sites of saliva release; the interaction produces immune complexes that interfere with free release of sporozoites by mosquitoes in vitro and in vivo (8). Some sporozoites injected by mosquitoes into immunized hosts may successfully escape into the blood. Indeed, sporozoites that bypass skin by being injected intravenously by syringe into mice passively immunized with immune serum are cleared effectively from the circulation (12), indicating a functional role for antibodies against “break-through” sporozoites that have reached the blood. Conceivably, antibody-coated sporozoites may be blocked during attempted passage through Kupffer cells prior to hepatocyte invasion (13, 14). In vitro studies have documented that opsonized sporozoites are prone to phagocytosis (15–17), suggesting that Kupffer cells can eliminate opsonized sporozoites in vivo. Furthermore, antibodies also inhibit invasion and traversal through hepatocytes, events that rely on sporozoite motility (18). Thus, anti-sporozoite antibodies can act sequentially against sporozoites at different stages of sporozoite invasion from the skin to invasion of dermal blood vessels, to passage from Kupffer cells into hepatocytes, and subsequent traversal of sporozoites through a series of hepatocytes.

Abstract:Clostridioides difficile is an anaerobic Gram-positive and spore-forming bacterium. The majority of C. difficile strains produce two toxins, A and B, associated with the development of acute diarrhea and/or colitis. In this review, two situations are distinguished: C. difficile infection (CDI) and asymptomatic colonization (AC). The main objective of this review is to explore the available data related to the link between the gut microbiota and the development of CDI. The secondary aim is to provide more information on why some people colonized with toxigenic C. difficile develop an infection while others show no signs of disease. Several factors, such as the use of antibiotics and proton pump inhibitors, hospitalization, and age, predispose individuals to C. difficile colonization and/or C. difficile infection. The gut microbiota of people with AC showed decreased abundances of Prevotella, Alistipes, Bacteroides, Bifidobacterium, Dorea, Coprococcus, and Roseburia. The gut microbiota of people suffering from CDI showed reductions in the abundances of Lachnospiraceae, Ruminococcaceae, Blautia spp., Prevotella spp., Dialister spp., Bifidobacterium spp., Roseburia spp., Anaerostipes spp., Faecalibacterium spp. and Coprococcus spp., in comparison with healthy people. Furthermore, increases in the abundances of Enterococcaceae and Enterococcus were associated with C. difficile infection.
