Abstract:This study aimed to develop a multifunctional active packaging film for fruit preservation. In detail, a series of gelatin (Gel) composite films were prepared by employing chitosan-ferulic acid-titanium dioxide nanohybrid particles (CFT NPs) as filler into Gel film and then their structural, physical, and functional properties were characterized to determine a nanocomposite film with the optimal performances. The results showed that synthesized CFT NPs posed exceptional performances (UV absorption, antioxidant activity, antibacterial ability, etc). After incorporating into Gel film, CFT-Gel films possessed denser network structure owing to the hydrogen bond connection between Gel and CFT NPs. The addition of CFT NPs significantly (P < 0.05) enhanced mechanical and barrier properties for water vapor, oxygen, and carbon dioxide of nanocomposite films, especially for CFT-Gel film with 0.40 mg/mL of CFT NPs (CFT0.40-Gel). CFT0.40-Gel film also showed enhanced UV shielding (∼100% at 200–400 nm), antioxidant ability (2-fold∼3-fold enhancement), and high relative bacteriostatic rate (>95% against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus under ultraviolet catalysis due to the generation of reactive oxygen species). Moreover, hemolysis assay proved the good bio-safety of CFT-Gel films. Further, CFT0.40-Gel film was successfully applied in the preservation of non-climacteric fruit (strawberries) and climacteric fruit (bananas), as the evidence of its good preservation ability. Therefore, the multifunctional CFT0.40-Gel film possessed great application prospect in fruit preservation. Meanwhile, this work provided a feasible strategy for designing a multifunctional active food packaging.

Abstract:Developing multifunctional films with antibacterial, antioxidant, and sustained-release properties is a robust strategy for preventing contamination of perishable fruits by foodborne microorganisms. This study engineered a sustained-release biodegradable antibacterial film loaded with EGCG (Pickering emulsion (PE)/α-Cyclodextrin (α-CD)/Konjac glucomannan (KGM)) through multi-strategy cross-linking for fruit preservation. EGCG is stabilized using PE and incorporated into the α-CD/KGM inclusion compound; the unique structure of α-CD enhances EGCG encapsulation, while KGM provides the film toughness and surface adhesion. The composite film's physicochemical properties, antioxidant, bacteriostatic and biodegradability were studied. Results showed that Pickering emulsions with 3 % oil phase exhibited excellent stability. Moreover, α-CD introduction increased the loading and sustained release of EGCG from the film, and its concentration significantly affected the light transmission, thermal stability, mechanical strength, mechanical characteristics and antioxidant capacity of the composite membrane. Antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the composite film increased significantly with increasing α-CD concentration. Application of the film to tomatoes and strawberries effectively inhibited Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus growth, prolonging the shelf-life of the fruits. Notably, the composite film exhibits superior biodegradability in soil. This EGCG-loaded PE/α-CD/KGM composite film is anticipated to be a multifunctional antimicrobial preservation material with sustained-release properties and biodegradable for perishable food applications.
Organic nanoparticles incorporated starch/carboxymethylcellulose multifunctional coating film for efficient preservation of perishable products

Abstract:Most of postharvest agricultural produces are perishable due to microorganisms infections and physiological change. Herein, one kind of multifunctional coating film of SC-ECCNPs was developed by incorporating organic nanoparticles of ECCNPs into starch/carboxymethylcellulose (SC) to prolong shelf life of food with excellent performances. The SC-ECCNPs coating was prepared with starch and sodium carboxymethylcellulose as film substrate (SC) to incorporate with organic nanoparticles of ECCNPs formed by integrating epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), cysteine (Cys), and cinnamaldehyde (CA). The incorporation of ECCNPs improves the UV-resistance and physical properties of SC-ECCNPs coating and also endows it with excellent antioxidative and broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. The application possibilities of SC-ECCNPs coating were explored with strawberries and oranges as samples, validating that the SC-ECCNPs coating can prolong the shelf life of fruits at room temperature. The biosafety of the coating was further confirmed with hemolysis and MTT experiments. The SC-ECCNPs coating film was prepared with natural substrates via a simple and green method. The investigation provides an instructive way for developing advanced packaging materials with high performances.
Rapid in situ formation of κ-carrageenan-carboxymethyl chitosan-kaolin clay hydrogel films enriched with arbutin for enhanced preservation of cherry tomatoes

Abstract:Food waste resulting from perishable fruits and vegetables, coupled with the utilization of non-renewable petroleum-based packaging materials, presents pressing challenges demanding resolution. This study addresses these critical issues through the innovative development of a biodegradable functional plastic wrap. Specifically, the proposed solution involves the creation of a κ-carrageenan/carboxymethyl chitosan/arbutin/kaolin clay composite film. This film, capable of rapid in-situ formation on the surfaces of perishable fruits, adeptly conforms to their distinct shapes. The incorporation of kaolin clay in the composite film plays a pivotal role in mitigating water vapor and oxygen permeability, concurrently bolstering water resistance. Accordingly, tensile strength of the composite film experiences a remarkable enhancement, escalating from 20.60 MPa to 34.71 MPa with the incorporation of kaolin clay. The composite film proves its efficacy by preserving cherry tomatoes for an extended period of 9 days at 28 °C through the deliberate delay of fruit ripening, respiration, dehydration and microbial invasion. Crucially, the economic viability of the raw materials utilized in the film, coupled with the expeditious and straightforward preparation method, underscores the practicality of this innovative approach. This study thus introduces an easy and sustainable method for preserving perishable fruits, offering a cost-effective and efficient alternative to petroleum-based packaging materials.

Abstract:One-third of the global food production goes to waste, and fruits and vegetables constitute the majority of this proportion. The phytohormone ethylene is the main cause of postharvest decay of fruits and vegetables, and thus, the effective regulation of ethylene is crucial to address the global challenge of postharvest food waste. Conventional methods, such as the use of metal-based scavengers, chemical additives, and nondegradable coatings, exhibit significant health and environmental issues. Thus, in this study, we fabricated bio-based ethylene scavenger films composed of paper towel (PT) microfibers coated with zein- Artemisia sphaerocephala Krasch . gum (ASKG) nanoparticles (NPs) with core-shell structures via electrospraying. After 15 days of incubation, bananas in the presence of these films exhibited a lower browning rate, higher hardness, and longer shelf life than the banana without an ethylene scavenger film. The hierarchical structure of the films endowed them with several chemical and physical characteristics advantageous to their application as ethylene scavenger films in fruit preservation. While the presence of numerous active functional groups of zein and the high specific surface area of the NPs enhanced the ethylene removal efficiency of the films, the favorable porosity, hydrophobicity, and mechanical properties of the films enhanced their longevity. Thus, the zein-ASKG films fabricated in this study provide an efficient, safe, and sustainable strategy for fruit preservation.

Abstract:IntroductionThe demand for sustainable food packaging materials has led to the exploration of bioactive composite films. This study aimed to prepare and evaluate a composite film made from sweet potato peel polyphenols extract and sweet potato starch (SPS) for its potential use in food packaging.MethodsThe composite film was prepared by uniformly dispersing 0.4% sweet potato peel polyphenols in the SPS matrix. Physicochemical properties and functional characteristics were assessed, including mechanical properties, UV barrier, water and gas barrier properties, antioxidant activity, and antimicrobial abilities against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus. The film's efficacy in food packaging was tested using fresh cherry tomatoes, stored at 4°C, to determine its impact on shelf life.ResultsThe starch-based sweet potato peel polyphenols film demonstrated enhanced mechanical properties and excellent UV barrier properties. It showed improved water and gas barrier properties and strong antioxidant activity, with clearance rates above 90% for DPPH and ABTS radicals. The film also exhibited effective antimicrobial abilities against the tested bacteria. Food packaging experiments indicated that the film could extend the shelf life of fresh cherry tomatoes to 7 days when stored at 4°C.DiscussionThe results suggest that the developed composite film has significant potential as an eco-friendly food packaging material. Its multifunctional properties, including UV protection, barrier enhancement, antioxidant activity, and antimicrobial capabilities, make it a promising candidate for extending the shelf life of perishable foods. The film's performance in slowing spoilage and extending the shelf life of cherry tomatoes highlights its practical application prospects in the food industry.

Abstract:Approximately 30 % of global agricultural land is used to produce food that is ultimately lost or wasted, making it imperative to explore strategies for mitigating this waste. This study explored the potential of chitosan (CS) derivatives as edible coatings to extend food shelf life. Although soluble CS derivatives such as glycol CS are suitable coatings, their antimicrobial properties often diminish with increased solubility. To address this issue, gallic acid (GA), a polyphenol, was conjugated with CS using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide/N-hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS) chemistry to create edible coating solutions. The resulting CS-GA films exhibited remarkable solubility, mechanical strength, UV-blocking properties, and superior antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Furthermore, these films exhibited a high affinity for hydrophobic fruit surfaces while also facilitating easy washing, making them an alternative for consumers who are averse to film-coated products. The CS-GA-coated fruits exhibited minimal surface spoilage, decreased mass loss, and increased firmness. Therefore, these CS-GA conjugate coatings hold significant potential as eco-friendly, edible, and washable food packaging coatings.
Integrated self-assembly and cross-linking technology engineered photodynamic antimicrobial film for efficient preservation of perishable foods

Abstract:A new antibacterial film was constructed to combat the severe spoilage of fruits and vegetables caused by microorganisms. Specifically, photoresponsive cinnamaldehyde-tannic‑iron acetate nanospheres (CTF NPs) were prepared using ultrasonic-triggered irreversible equilibrium self-assembly and ionic cross-linking co-driven processes and were integrated into the matrix of κ-carrageenan (KC) (CTF-KC films) as functional fillers. The CTF0.4-KC film (KC film doped with 0.4 mg/mL CTF NPs) showed a 99.99% bactericidal rate against both E. coli and S. aureus, extended the storage period of cherry tomatoes from 20 to 32 days. The introduction of CTF enhanced the barrier, thermal stability, and mechanical strength properties, albeit with a slight compromise on transparency. Furthermore, the biosafety of the CTF0.4-KC film was confirmed through hemolysis and cytotoxicity tests. Together, the aforementioned results demonstrated the outstanding antibacterial and fresh-keeping properties of CTF0.4-KC. These desirable properties highlight the potential use of CTF0.4-KC films in food preservation applications.
Multifunctional bio-nanocomposite films integrated with essential oils@metal-phenolic network nanocapsules for durable fruit preservation

Abstract:Food spoilage exacerbates global hunger and poverty, necessitating urgent advancements in food shelf life extension methodologies. However, balancing antibacterial efficacy for food preservation with human and environmental safety remains a significant challenge. Natural essential oils (EOs), known for their potent antibacterial and antioxidant properties, offer eco-friendly alternatives, yet their high volatility and instability limit practical applications. Herein, we conducted the encapsulation of EOs within biocompatible metal phenolic networks (MPNs) to create EOs@MPN nanocapsules. Subsequently, these nanocapsules were integrated into bio-nanocomposite films composed of natural soy protein isolate (SPI) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). The resulting films exhibited robust mechanical properties (Tensile Strength >10 MPa) and significantly enhanced antioxidant activity (7-fold higher than pure films). Importantly, the synergistic combination of EOs and MPNs conferred enhanced antibacterial efficacy. Safety assessments confirmed the bio-nanocomposite films' high biodegradability (> 90 %) and negligible cytotoxicity, ensuring environmental sustainability and human health safety. In practical applications, the bio-nanocomposite films effectively delayed the surface browning of fresh-cut fruits for up to 48 h, demonstrating a pronounced synergistic antioxidative effect against oxidation. Moreover, tomatoes and blueberries packaged with the bio-nanocomposite films still maintained freshness for up to 12 days, offering promising strategies for extending the shelf life of perishable fruits. These findings underscore the potential of EOs@MPN-based bio-nanocomposite films as sustainable solutions for food preservation and highlight their practical viability in mitigating food spoilage and enhancing food security globally.

Abstract:A multifunctional cellulose‐based preservation coating with antibacterial, oxygen/water vapor barrier, and antioxidant properties, which is based on cellulose microgel (CMG) and prepared using multi‐component composites with montmorillonite (MMT), cationic cellulose derivative (Cell‐P+), and L‐ascorbic acid (Vc). It has good wetting properties, highly transparent, edible, and washable. This method can successfully preserve the long‐term freshness of various fruits. Long‐term preservation of fresh fruit and vegetables without a cold chain is a great challenge to food security because fruits and vegetables are highly vulnerable to poor storage conditions. Fruit spoilage is a complex biochemical process that involves many factors, including microbial reproduction, oxidation, metabolism, and H2O evaporation. Only the synergy of the multiple spoilage inhibition methods can achieve long‐term freshness preservation. Herein, a multifunctional cellulose‐based preservation coating with antibacterial, oxygen/water vapor barrier, and antioxidant properties is proposed, which is based on cellulose microgel (CMG) and prepared using multi‐component composites with montmorillonite (MMT), cationic cellulose derivative (Cell‐P+), and L‐ascorbic acid (Vc). Abstract:Robust biomass-derived packaging films with excellent antimicrobial and antioxidative properties are highly desired for preservation of the perishable fruit. However, most reported packaging films rely on introducing artificial antibacterial and antioxidant agents and their abuse could cause severe safety and environmental issues. To address these drawbacks, herein, we developed a dynamically crosslinked chitosan/cellulose nanofiber-based packaging film integrated with γ-cyclodextrin/curcumin inclusion complex where curcumin is an edible natural photosensitizer with excellent photodynamic antimicrobial and antioxidative properties. The resulting composite packaging material can be easily applied as conformal coating or package film on different types of perishable fruits. Adopting banana, tomato and cut apple slices as representative examples, we demonstrate that this material can effectively extend their shelf life by reducing microbial invasion, water loss and oxidation thanks to its excellent photodynamic antimicrobial and antioxidative properties. This work provides a promising strategy to develop sustainable, low-cost and environmentally friendly packaging materials from readily available biodegradable biomass sources to extend the shelf life of perishable produce.

Abstract:This study investigated the effect of an edible water-extractable arabinoxylan (WEAX) coating on the postharvest preservation of strawberries and cherries. The WEAX film was prepared using carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) film as a control, with thorough characterization of its film properties. Subsequently, strawberry and cherry fruits were submerged in a solution containing edible film-forming materials and left to be stored at room temperature, followed by the analysis of their physicochemical parameters to assess their preservation efficacy. The results show that the WEAX film exhibited enhanced flexibility, superior water vapor permeability, thermal stability, and surface morphology. Furthermore, the implementation of WEAX film effectively mitigated weight loss, decay, color degradation, softening process, ascorbic acid decline, anthocyanin accumulation, and an increase in malondialdehyde content in fruits. Thus, the incorporation of WEAX coating demonstrates its capability in prolonging the shelf life of fruits post-harvest, underscoring its potential in fruit preservation practices.
Developing a pachyman/polyvinyl alcohol-polylactic acid bilayer film as multifunctional packaging and its application in cherry tomato preservation

Abstract:Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a widely used biodegradable material, but its high solubility and water vapor permeability limit its applications in food packaging. To address this issue, bilayer films were developed based on the combination of blending and coating techniques in the study, which consisted of an inner pachyman (PM)/PVA blend layer and an outer polylactic acid (PLA) layer. Blending PVA with PM reduced the solubility and oxygen permeability of the film, and the blend matrix showed rapid self-healing capabilities. Loading of a thin PLA shell onto the PM/PVA layer improved the water resistance, tensile strength, stiffness and water vapor barrier of the developed bilayer films. The best overall performance of the bilayer film was achieved using 40 g/L PLA as the film-forming solution. Infrared spectroscopic and microscopic structure analysis revealed weak interfacial interaction of the bilayer film. Furthermore, this bilayer film showed a better preservation effect on cherry tomatoes compared with PVA, polyethylene, and PM/PVA films. The physicochemical quality of fruits could be effectively preserved for at least 10 days under ambient environment. It is anticipated that the bilayer film developed here serves as a promising candidate for food packaging materials to extend the shelf life.

Strong, tough self-healing multi-functional sodium alginate-based edible composite coating for banana preservation

Abstract:Edible coatings are a new green technology for preventing the rotting of fruits and extending their shelf lives. However, during storage, respiratory processes can generate large amounts of water, causing the dissolution of these coating. Furthermore, these coating can be mechanically damaged. Therefore, the development of strong, tough, waterproof and self-healing edible coatings is highly desirable. Herein, gluconolactone was slowly oxidized to generate gluconic acid, which was further used to protonate amino groups in wheat gluten (WG), forming strong electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonds and ester bonds between soy hull nanocellulose (SHNC) and sodium alginate (SA). The introduction of WG and SHNC improved the mechanical strength, hydrophobicity and water retention of the composite film from 28 MPa, 33.2° ± 1.18° and 19.43° ± 0.83° to 60 MPa, 45.13° ± 1.53° and 41.47° ± 0.96°, respectively. Further, the composite film exhibited excellent self-healing, UV resistance and gas-barrier properties. Banana preservation experiments showed that at 25 °C and 50 % RH, the composite coating effectively slowed the mass loss and softening of bananas, delayed the browning of banana peels and ripening of fruit pulp, and extended the shelf life of bananas to 7 days. Therefore, this study provides a new perspective for the preparation of a new, strong, tough, waterproof and self-healing multi-functional edible coating with high potential for the preservation of perishable fruits.
A water-resistant egg white/chitosan/pectin blending film with spherical-linear molecular interpenetrating network strengthened by multifunctional tannin-nisin nanoparticles

Abstract:Edible films are effective alternatives to plastic packaging, however, the hydrophilicity of edible films based on protein and polysaccharide limits the application. Therefore, we fabricated a water-stable hybrid film with a linear-spherical interpenetrating molecular topology network using egg white (EW), chitosan (CS), and pectin. Meanwhile, the nisin-tannin acid self-assembly complex nanoparticles were employed as a multifunctional cross-linker, antibacterial and antioxidant agent to improve the performance of films. The FTIR, XRD, and SEM analysis revealed that the conformation and crystalline structure rearrangement of chitosan induced by the alkaline environment provided by egg white enhanced the network structure of films, effectively avoided the addition of modifying reagents. The proposed hybrid films exhibited excellent properties, with EW/TNPCS3 showing the best overall performance. The water contact angle (WCA) increased to 105.27 ± 1.62°, and its dissolution and swelling rates were significantly lower than pure egg white and pure chitosan films. Moreover, tannin-nisin (TN) nanoparticles endowed the films with excellent antimicrobial activity against the common Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria. Thus, the prepared blending films have great application potential in food preservation, especially to maintain stable performance in high humidity environment.
Carboxymethyl cellulose/gelatin film incorporated with eggplant peel waste-derived carbon dots for active fruit packaging applications

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) were derived using eggplant peel by a hydrothermal approach and incorporated into the carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and gelatin (Gel) blend to develop sustainable and functional packaging films for fruit preservation. The CD was uniformly dispersed within the CMC/Gel blend to form a dense and continuous film and fashioned a strong interaction with the polymer chain, increasing the tensile strength of the film by 5.0–16.0 %. Also, with the impregnation of CDs, the UV-blocking potential of the CMC/Gel film was greatly improved to the extent of blocking 94.3 % of UV-B and 72.5 % of UV-A, while the water vapor permeability slightly decreased (by 2.7–5.4 %), and the water contact angle of the film marginally expand (by 6.2–19.1 %). The CMC/Gel film with 3 wt% of CD added depicted strong antioxidant efficacy of 100 % against ABTS and 59.1 % against DPPH and displayed strong antibacterial action that inhibited the progress of Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli by 99.8 %. In addition, when table grapes were packaged using a CMC/Gel composite film containing CD and stored at 4 °C for 24 days, the fruits packed with the composite film maintained excellent external quality and extended the shelf life.

Eco-friendly and flexible polysaccharide-based packaging films for fruit preservation

Abstract:Food safety and wastage caused by fruit deterioration is a serious global problem. Effective packaging systems for extending the freshness period of fruit play a key role in food safety. In this work, we constructed an eco-friendly and flexible polysaccharide-based packaging film based on hydroxypropyl guar (HPG), cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), deep eutectic solvents (DES) and anthocyanin (Anth). DES could endow polysaccharide films with multiple hydrogen bond numbers and good stability. Hydroxypropyl guar/cellulose nanocrystals/anthocyanin with 0.2 g deep eutectic solvents (HCA-DES0.2) had good tensile properties, oxygen barrier properties (3.01 cm3/m2·day·Pa), water resistance (WCA 111.97°), antibacterial (CFU ˂ 103), and transparency (55.4 %). The preservation tests of grape and blueberry showed that the shelf life of these two fruits was 12-20 days, and the polysaccharide film had great application potential in fruit preservation.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to develop functional composite edible films or coatings for fruit preservation by the addition of bioactive components in combinations that have not yet been thoroughly studied, according to the relevant literature. Edible films were initially composed of (i) chitosan (CH), cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and beta-cyclodextrin (CD) (50%-37.5%-12.5% ratio), and (ii) hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and beta-cyclodextrin (CD) (50%-37.5%-12.5% ratio). The bioactive components incorporated (5, 10 and 15% v/v) were as follows: (i) pomace oil-based nanoemulsion (NE) aiming to enhance barrier properties, and (ii) caffeine (C), aiming to enhance the antioxidant activity of films, respectively. Indeed, NE addition led to very high barrier properties (low oxygen and water vapor permeability), increased flexibility and reduced color. Furthermore, the contribution of these coatings to fresh strawberries' preservation under cold storage was investigated, with very promising results concerning weight loss, color difference, and preservation of fruit moisture and quantity of O2 and CO2 inside the packages. Additionally, C addition led to very high antioxidant activity, reduced color and improved barrier properties. Finally, the contribution of these coatings to avocado's preservation under cold storage was investigated, with very encouraging results for color difference, hardness and peroxide value of the fruit samples.
Optimized hybrid edible surface coating prepared with gelatin and cellulose nanofiber for cherry tomato preservation

Abstract:The use of renewable bioresources and their nanoforms in developing edible coating materials is considered a promising approach for preserving food freshness. Herein, cellulose nanofibers (CNF) with different morphologies were combined with gelatin to prepare composite preservation film following by brushing over the surface of cherry tomatoes as an edible coating. The gelatin-based composite film containing 0.3 % CNF20 (GC2-0.3) exhibited the lowest water vapor permeability (WVP, 1.97 × 10-4 barrer), lower oxygen permeability (OP, 2.54 × 10-2 barrer), higher transparency (Tr = 85.28 %) and excellent mechanical properties (σ = 47.45 MPa, E = 1.84 GPa). When coated on cherry tomatoes, it maintained good luster and freshness, significantly reducing the water loss of cherry tomatoes. The weight loss was only 16 % after 14 days of storage at 25 °C and 30 % humidity, compared to >30 % for the uncoated cherry tomatoes. This work provides a viable strategy for developing sustainable, green fresh-keeping materials that can prolong the storage time of the putrescible food.
