Abstract:Against the background of global climate change and urbanization, the biodiversity of birds is facing unprecedented threats. In this paper, taking the Nanjing megapolis as an example, based on the distribution sites of 79 bird species and 17 environmental variables, the MaxEnt model was used to simulate the distribution of bird diversity, and the most important environmental variables were analyzed. The results show that (1) the MaxEnt model is suitable for simulation of the potential distribution of bird diversity in the Nanjing megapolis; (2) the areas with the highest bird diversity in the Nanjing megapolis were mainly distributed in the mountains and hills where the forests are located; (3) the five most important environmental variables affecting bird distribution were ranked as maximum temperature of the warmest month (MTWM) > Digital Elevation Model (DEM) > precipitation of the wettest month (PWM) > distance to the nearest forest (DF) > Fractional Vegetation Cover index (FVC), with MTWM, PWM, and DF being negatively correlated with bird diversity, whereas FVC and DEM exhibited positive correlations with bird diversity; and (4) the contribution rates of the three types of environmental variables were ranked as follows: habitat environmental variables > meteorological environmental variables > disturbance environmental variables. Sufficient bird habitats should be maintained in cities, and disturbances from human activities should be reduced to achieve the harmonious coexistence of humans and animals in the context of climate change and urbanization, thereby promoting sustainable development.

Ecological Correlates of Extinction Risk in Chinese Birds

Abstract:China is one of the countries with the richest bird biodiversity in the world. Among the 1372 Chinese birds, 146 species are considered threatened and three species are regionally extinct according to the officially released China Biodiversity Red List in 2015. Here, we conducted the first extensive analysis to systematically investigate the patterns and processes of extinction and threat in Chinese birds. We addressed the following four questions. First, is extinction risk randomly distributed among avian families in Chinese birds? Second, which families contain more threatened species than would be expected by chance? Third, which species traits are important in determining the extinction risk in Chinese birds using a multivariate phylogenetic comparative approach? Finally, is the form of the relationship between traits additive or nonadditive (synergistic)? We found that the extinction risk of Chinese birds was not randomly distributed among taxonomic families. The families that contained significantly more threatened species than expected were the hornbills, cranes, pittas, pheasants and hawks and eagles. We obtained eleven species traits that are commonly hypothesized to influence extinction risk from the literature: body size, clutch size, trophic level, mobility, habitat specificity, geographical range size, nest type, nest site, flocking tendency, migrant status and hunting vulnerability. After phylogenetic correction, model selection based on Akaike's information criterion identified the synergistic interaction between body size and hunting vulnerability as the single best correlate of extinction risk in Chinese birds. Our results suggest that, in order to be effective, priority management efforts should be given both to certain extinction‐prone families, particularly the hornbills, pelicans, cranes, pittas, pheasants and hawks and eagles, and to bird species with large body size and high hunting vulnerability.
Bird Community Patterns in Response to the Island Features of Urban Woodlots in Eastern China

Abstract:Many studies have demonstrated the changes in the spatial patterns of plant and animal communities with respect to habitat fragmentation. Insular communities tend to exhibit some special patterns in connection with the characteristics of island habitats. In this paper, the relationships between richness, assemblage, and abundance of bird communities with respect to island features were analyzed in 20 urban woodlots in Hangzhou, China. Field investigations of bird communities, using the line transect method, were conducted from January to December, 1997. Each woodlot was surveyed 16 times during the year. Results indicated that bird richness was higher, per unit area, in the smaller woodlots than the larger ones, and overall bird density decreased with the increase in the size of woodlot. However, the evenness of species abundance increased with the area, and small woodlots were usually dominated by higher density species and large woodlots by medium density species. Most species occurring in the small woodlots also occurred in larger woodlots. Also, bird communities among urban woodlots showed a nestedness pattern in assemblage. These patterns implied that the main impacts of woodland habitat fragmentation are: (1) species are constricted and thus species number will increase at a given sample size; (2) as surface area decreases, the proportion of forest edge species as to interior species will increase; (3) community abundance will therefore increase per unit area but most individuals will be from a few dominant species; and (4) overall species diversity will decrease at a habitat level as well as at a region level. These patterns of community in response to the island features were therefore summarized as “island effects in community”. The underlying processes of such observations were also examined in this paper. Woodlot area, edge ratio, isolation, and habitat nestedness were considered as the important factors forming the island effects in community. High heterogeneity between habitats usually contributed most to the maintenance of regional biodiversity, especially in urban woodlots.

Abstract:Given the rapid rise in human population and increasing urbanization, it is important to understand their potential impacts on biodiversity. From March 2007 to August 2007, we conducted bird surveys in 90 strip transects, each 3 km long and 100 m wide, along a gradient of urbanization in Hangzhou, China. This gradient spanned a range of urbanization levels including urban areas, rural-urban continuum areas, farming areas, mixed forest/farming areas and forested areas. We recorded 96 breeding bird species and classified them into nine functional groups based on nesting requirements. The nine functional groups consisted of canopy nesters, shrub nesters, canopy/shrub nesters, natural cavity nesters, building nesters, natural cavity/building nesters, ground nesters, water surface nesters and parasitic nesters. Species and functional diversities were estimated based on the Shannon-Wiener index. Environmental data of each transect as human disturbance, vegetation cover and building index were also measured, and a synthetic urbanization index of each transect was introduced based on these data. We used regression analyses to model the relationship of species abundance, species diversity, functional abundance and functional diversity with this synthetic index. The results show that urbanization significantly reduces species richness, species diversity, functional richness and functional diversity, but the specific patterns differed. The relationship between species abundance/species diversity and urbanization is linear. In contrast, the relationship between functional diversity and urbanization was quadratic. In other words, with increased urbanization, functional diversity declined only slightly at first but then dropped at an accelerating rate. This implies that, although moderate urbanization reduces species diversity of breeding birds, it affects functional diversity of breeding birds only slightly in Hangzhou. The regression analysis of species diversity and functional diversity suggests a quadratic relationship between species diversity and functional diversity, i.e., a linear relationship between species diversity and functional diversity can only exist at low diversity levels across urbanization gradients and increasing species abundance does not lead to an increase in functional diversity at the highest diversity levels.

Abstract:Land use/land cover (LULC) changes and high urbanization rates are the main drivers of avian habitat loss in developing countries. However, few studies have examined the effects of urbanization intensity on avian diversity distribution and its importance in guiding eco-friendly urban planning. We surveyed bird distribution (n = 67 species) in different seasons using local ecological knowledge (LEK) and transect line methods in Jiangyan District from July 2018 to May 2019. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to assess the effects of urbanization levels on birds relative density and richness during spring-summer (breeding season) and autumn-winter seasons (non-breeding season). Generalized linear models (GLM) were identified for the landscape composition and configuration that drive relative density and richness in native bird communities. Using redundancy analysis (RDA), we identified the landscape composition and configuration factors affecting bird foraging and roosting at urbanization levels. The results showed high dependency of waders and granivores on paddy fields and dry arable land respectively during the breeding season. During non-breeding season, wetland abundance, land cover, connectivity and total area of BGI were important habitat factors in attracting birds. Moreover, the landscape composition and configuration factors of BGI: wetlands as well as farmland habitats, are the main environmental cues that influence bird foraging. Therefore, to increase habitat suitability over landscape matrix, we propose creation of multiple waterbodies and green corridors of variable types and sizes on natural patches to improve the connectivity of ecological network. We also recommend land management interventions in farmland ecosystems, which could contribute to natural habitat restoration and improve bird biodiversity in urban areas.
Effects of Urbanization on Bird Community Composition and Functional Traits: A Case Study of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region

Abstract:Aims:The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region,being at the forefront of China's economic development,is undergoing rapid urbanization,posing potential effects on biodiversity.Birds,prevalent in urban and suburban landscapes,possess a sensitivity to environmental shifts and are crucial indicators of urban biodiversity.This research focuses on the avifauna of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region,delving into differences in bird community structure and functional traits among urban,rural,and wild habitats. Methods:A dataset of 58,620 observation records spanning 2000 to 2019 was compiled from China Bird Report,GBIF,ebird,and other databases.After excluding records outside the breeding and wintering seasons,17,978 valid observations were retained for analysis.We employed non-metric multidimensional scaling(NMDS),principal component analysis(PCA),multivariate kernel density estimation,and other analyses to examine the differences in species composition and functional traits across the three landscape zones. Results:Initial records documented 482 bird species in the region,representing 23 orders and 77 families.Following data screening,rural areas exhibited the highest species diversity(258 species)compared to the urban and wild zones.These species,spanning 20 orders and 64 families,accounted for 92.1％of the total number of species richness in the region.Urban and wild zones harbored 251 and 228 species,respectively,with 198 species(70.7％)shared among all zones.Species richness per sampling location was significantly greater in rural and wild areas compared to urban zones,with comparable levels between rural and wild habitats.Notable species composition overlaps were observed among the three habitat types.Functional traits analysis revealed that birds in urban and rural areas had higher mean body mass than those in wild areas,with no significant difference between urban and rural zones.Clutch size exhibited no significant variation among the zones.Urban habitats supported wide-ranging species,while wild areas hosted primarily narrow-ranging species.Despite these distinctions,dietary composition showed similarity across urban,rural,and wild landscapes. Conclusions:Our investigation underscores the capacity of well-designed urban and suburban ecologies to sustain diverse avian populations.Noteworthy is the adaptability of birds to both urban and rural terrains amid the ongoing urbanization trend.Against this backdrop,we advocate for further research into conservation strategies tailored for regions with dense human populations and intensive land utilization.Future research endeavors should focus on safeguarding crucial resources within urban green spaces,water bodies,wetlands,rural agricultural lands,and paddy fields across the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

Abstract:Blooming citizen science in China creates opportunities to update distribution maps of threatened birds and contributes to decision making for conservation. 46,073 records submitted by over 7000 bird watchers from 1998 to 2013 in China cover 1195 of 1371 species and all provincial administrative districts in the country. We extracted 13,181 occurrence localities for 95 threatened species defined by the IUCN Red List and 239 national protected species in China. By applying these data in MaxEnt model, we identified new conservation hotspots for threatened birds in China in coastal regions of the Bohai Gulf and the Yellow Sea, the south of the North China Plain, and the lower reach of the Yangtze River. These new conservation hotpots are not included in the global biodiversity hotspots, and not all represented in the priority regions in National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP). These newly identified conservation hotspots are seriously under-protected: only less than 2% of them are in national nature reserves. There is a long way to go to meet the Aichi targets, a plan to halt the loss of biodiversity by 2020.

Abstract:Birds are considered a good model for indicators of biodiversity response to habitat variations, as they are very sensitive to environmental change. However, continuous observations of habitat alterations from undisturbed landscapes to human-dominated ones, as well as the associated effects on bird biodiversity, are lacking. In this study, New Jiangwan Town in Shanghai, China was selected to illustrate the response of bird species, and thus biodiversity, to habitat loss and fragmentation. Land use/land cover (LULC) data and bird records from 2002 to 2013 were collected and analyzed. The results suggested that, due to urban sprawl, the area of wetland and shrub land had dropped by 82.4% and 87.3% by the end of 2013. Four different urbanization stages were identified in terms of the spatio-temporal variations in the landscape. To measure bird biodiversity, species richness and relative abundance were calculated, and they could account for the overall trend in biodiversity but might mask the process of species replacement. As an indicator of biodiversity accounting, the mean species abundance (MSA) of the original species would not include exotic or invasive species in its calculation, and its value decreased from 100% to 76.8% to 52.2% to 24.5% in the four corresponding stages. Finally, suggested by redundant analysis, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation on bird biodiversity differed in various bird communities, and the area and connectivity of wetlands were the most significant variables. Our findings could provide important information to inform bird biodiversity protection and habitat restoration.
Integrity and Size of Green Spaces Are Critical for the Functional Diversity of Birds: Evidence from the Eastern and Northwestern Regions of China

Abstract:Urbanization often changes bird species richness and affects the functional diversity. Therefore, understanding these changes helps city planners improve green space design and land use planning. Our study used multiple datasets to explore the effects of landscape patterns and natural environments on the functional diversity of birds in urban parks and campuses in the eastern and northwestern regions of China. Firstly, we used the data to calculate birds of the functional richness (FRic), functional evenness (FEve), and functional divergence (FDiv) of 68 urban spaces in the eastern and northwestern regions of China. Further, we established generalized linear models of natural factors, human factors, and functional diversity. Results showed more bird species with unique traits were in the northwestern region. This may be because the earlier urbanization in the eastern region filtered out urban-sensitive species, leaving behind urban adapters. Moreover, we found that the fractal dimension index was the most significant positive factor of FRic in the eastern region but the most significant negative factor of FDiv. Elevation was the most significant negative influence factor of FEve in the eastern region, but it was the most potent positive influence factor of FRic in the northwestern region. Population density had a significant positive effect on FDiv in the northwestern region. However, green space areas significantly negatively impacted FEve in the northwestern region. In addition, birds in parks in both regions had more functional traits than those on campuses, possibly because of the larger green space in parks, which may contain more fragments of native vegetation and reduce human interference. Our study suggests that preserving more original vegetation and reducing human disturbance in cities can increase the functional diversity of urban birds and improve urban ecosystem functions.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to provide practical suggestions for land use regulation to mitigate the impacts of intense urbanization using integrated modeling. To achieve effective urbanization management, it is essential to quantify the habitats of critical species and predict their dynamics in response to urbanization impacts in the future. In this study, we developed an integrated bird-habitat modeling that combines maximum entropy and patch-generating land use simulation based on a field survey of bird populations to characterize the habitat dynamics of birds in the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE) under urbanization impacts. Our findings revealed the following: (1) The YRE experienced fundamental fragmentation from 2000. (2) The year 2010 was a turning point, and from 2000 to 2037, habitats for all bird species tended to overlap and fragment, and decreased from 66% to 45%, resulting in a loss of about 4340 km2. (3) The maintenance of a buffer area of 300 m around built-up areas was crucial for preserving bird habitats. Based on the identified variables, the hotspots of birds’ habitats were prioritized and the regulation measures to mitigate urbanization impacts are proposed in YRE.
Environmental determinants of avian species richness in forests in a highly urbanized subtropical city: The effects of spatial scale and open space feature

Abstract:Numerous avian studies have emphasized the importance of natural/semi-natural elements, especially green spaces to conserve avian diversity in a city. However, little is known about environmental factors associated with avian diversity in a densely populated and highly urbanized subtropical city where large scale of conservation management is not feasible. Using Macao as a case city, we investigated the relationship between environmental features and species richness of urban birds in forests at multiple scales. We analyzed point count data of birds collected at eight transects in five forests in Macao during 2007-2009. We divided survey periods into three seasons and considered them as temporal replicates. We calculated percent cover of each of two environmental features, i.e., open water (waterbody) and open green vegetation at three scales: 50 m, 250 m, and 500 m buffer areas surrounding transect. Rarefaction was used to estimate total richness (richness of all species) and richness of each guild (open habitat, shrub, and forest species). Total richness, open habitat species richness and forest species richness were affected by environmental features within the 250 m buffer area, whereas shrub species richness was not related with any scale. Percent cover of open water influenced positively open habitat and forest species richness and consequently total richness. Percent cover of open green vegetation had a positive effect on open habitat species richness but negative on forest species richness. These patterns were somewhat associated with vegetation features of forests. Our study indicates that even in highly developed small city, the relationship between environmental features and avian species richness can be influenced by spatial scale(s) at which these features are measured as well as species' habitat preference. It also suggests that open features, especially open water could be an important factor affecting bird diversity in forests in urban areas.

Quantifying the Ecological Performance of Migratory Bird Conservation: Evidence from Poyang Lake Wetlands in China

Abstract:Protected areas are essential for the conservation of biodiversity. However, the rapid expansion of urbanization and the intensification of human activities have significantly disrupted environmental integrity, leading to a continuous deterioration in both the quantity and quality of large ecological patches. This has further diminished the connectivity among ecological patches, leading to significant consequences for regional biodiversity conservation. Taking Poyang Lake as a case study, which serves as a crucial wintering habitat for migratory birds along the East Asia–Australasia flyway, this research employs ArcMap technology. It considers various factors including land use type, slope, and elevation to evaluate habitat quality and degradation through the application of the InVEST model. Additionally, the study utilizes the minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) model alongside circuit theory to delineate ecological corridors within the area and to establish a comprehensive ecological network system. The research results in this paper are as follows. (i) During the period from 2000 to 2020, there was an overall decline in habitat quality within the study area, indicating a clear trend of habitat degradation. However, it is worth noting that there was an increase in habitat quality in certain local areas within the protected area. (ii) The ecological resistance values in the core area of the migratory bird reserve in Poyang Lake are generally low. However, the ecological resistance values of the habitats have shown a consistent increase from 2000 to 2020. Additionally, there has been a significant decrease in the density of ecological corridors during this time period. (iii) Over the period from 2000 to 2020, both the number and connectivity of ecological corridors decreased and their integrity and functionality degraded. Consequently, this weakened role of the ecological network has had implications for maintaining regional biodiversity and ecosystem service functions. The findings indicate two conclusions. (i) Ecological connectivity is essential for the conservation of migratory bird habitats. Strengthening control measures aimed at expanding ecological corridors can effectively safeguard flagship and umbrella species, thereby promoting biodiversity conservation. (ii) The establishment of ecological corridors can help reconcile conflicts between conservation efforts and development objectives. This reconciliation carries significant theoretical implications for fostering a harmonious coexistence between humans and birds in Poyang Lake's migratory bird sanctuary.

Abstract:Exploring the factors that drive changes in biodiversity is a hot and critically important topic in landscape ecology and biogeography. In this study, semi-structured citizen science data and bird distribution maps were employed to gather data from 2015 to 2020 for the calculation of bird species richness, the Shannon index, and the Pielou index in Anhui Province. These metrics were utilized to assess avian biodiversity and to elucidate the spatial patterns of biodiversity distribution across the region. In this research, a structural equation model (SEM) was utilized to investigate the relationships between the three dimensions of landscape spatial structure, urban development intensity, and environmental factors on bird biodiversity, and a conceptual framework was established to identify the key driving factors. The validity, reliability, and fit of the hypothesized model were substantiated through rigorous testing, demonstrating its reasonableness. The results indicate the following: (1) In landscape spatial structure, landscape composition and configuration play crucial roles in influencing bird diversity. An increased proportion of cultivated land negatively impacts bird diversity, whereas the expansion of forested areas promotes it. At the configuration level, the Largest Patch Index (LPI) significantly enhances bird diversity, serving as the primary driving force. Landscape spatial structure affects bird diversity both directly, through its composition, and indirectly, through its configuration. (2) The dimension of urban development intensity generally shows significant negative impacts; among these, GDP has the greatest comprehensive impact and shows a significant negative impact. (3) Topography has the greatest overall impact on bird diversity among the environmental factors, with a predominantly direct positive effect. (4) Overall, urban landscape spatial structure and urban development intensity are the main driving forces of bird diversity in Anhui Province, the greatest of which is the direct effect of the urban development intensity. These results provide an important scientific basis for landscape planning and ecological protection and provide inspiration for assessing the driving factors of animal and plant diversity in other regions.

Abstract:Urban woodlots are isolated as patches in urban matrix and possess the features of island.Moreover,their interior structures and landscape level structures are greatly modified by urbanization.We analyzed the relationships between the bird distribution and woodlot area,interior structures,distributions of microhabitat types,landscape level structures and human disturbance in 20 woodlots in Hangzhou city area.14 habitat variables and 14 microhabitat types were selected to test the relationships between the bird and habitat by Multivariate Regression Analysis and Correlation Analysis.The results indicate that bird species have a strong selectivity to the urban woodlots in Hangzhou,which is significantly correlated to not only the woodlot area but also many other habitat factors,such as the patch shape,vegetation density,microhabitat distribution,connectedness,isolation,surrounding landuse and human disturbance etc.It is the heterogeneity among the woodlots and the close association between the bird and habitat that result in the birds selective distributions.The results also indicate the importance of the conservation of special habitat and habitat diversity in maintenance of regional biodiversity.
Habitat Suitability Evaluation and Environmental Factor Identification for Spatial Distribution of Urban Birds: A Case Study of Hongshan District, Wuhan City, China

Abstract:The article takes 11 species of birds in Hongshan District as the research object based on the bird observation data 2020 and then identifies the spatial distribution of their habitats through the MaxEnt model. According to the results, we analyze the distribution characteristics and problems of bird habitats in Hongshan District and finally put forward the optimization suggestions according to the cohort groups. We conclude that water habitats and urban forest parks have higher suitability for bird spatial distribution and that the influence of various environmental factors on different types of birds is somewhat different. Based on the data analysis results, we provide references for the conservation of bird diversity and habitat restoration in Hongshan District: (1) Control the area of construction land and the number of high-rise buildings to make room for bird migration, enhance gene exchange among birds in different patches, and enrich species diversity. (2) Increase the number of bird migration “stations” between long-distance habitat patches to provide resting points for birds during long-distance migration. (3) Increase the number of bird migration "stations" between long-distance habitat patches to provide resting points for birds in the urban forest park. (4) Adopt tree-shrub-grass planting to provide more living space for birds. (5) Reserve a green corridor around urban roads and water systems to reduce the impact of urban roads on the distribution pattern of bird suitability.
Identification of Bird Habitat Restoration Priorities in a Central Area of a Megacity

Abstract:Rapid global urbanization has caused habitat degradation and fragmentation, resulting in biodiversity loss and the homogenization of urban species. Birds play a crucial role as biodiversity indicators in urban environments, providing multiple ecosystem services and demonstrating sensitivity to changes in habitat. However, construction activities often disrupt urban bird habitats, leading to a decline in habitat quality. This paper proposes a framework for prioritizing habitat restoration by pinpointing bird hotspots that demand attention and considering the matching relationship between bird richness and habitat quality. Shanghai represents a typical example of the high-density megacities in China, posing a significant challenge for biodiversity conservation efforts. Utilizing the random forest (RF) model, bird richness patterns in central Shanghai were mapped, and bird hotspots were identified by calculating local spatial autocorrelation indices. From this, the habitat quality of hotspot areas was evaluated, and the restoration priority of bird habitats was determined by matching bird richness with habitat quality through z-score standardization. The results were as follows: (1) Outer-ring green spaces, large urban parks, and green areas along coasts or rivers were found to be the most important habitats for bird richness. Notably, forests emerged as a crucial habitat, with approximately 50.68% of the forested areas identified as hotspots. (2) Four habitat restoration types were identified. The high-bird-richness–low-habitat-quality area (HBR-LHQ), mainly consisting of grassland and urban construction land, was identified as a key priority for restoration due to its vulnerability to human activities. (3) The Landscape Shannon's Diversity Index (SHDI) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) are considered the most significant factors influencing the bird distribution. Our findings provide a scientifically effective framework for identifying habitat restoration priorities in high-density urban areas.

Abstract:Abstract Background Habitat loss, fragmentation and decrease of habitat quality caused by urbanization have led to a dramatic decline in biodiversity worldwide. For highly urbanized areas, parks have become “islands” or habitat fragments for wildlife. As an important indicator group of urban ecosystem health, the response of birds to urbanization has attracted the global attention of ecologists. Understanding the key factors affecting bird diversity in urbanized environment is crucial to the protection of biodiversity in urban ecosystems. Methods We used the line-transect method to survey birds in 37 urban parks in Nanjing, China. We also measured a number of park characteristics (area, isolation, shape index, environmental noise, distance to city center, and habitat diversity) that are commonly assumed to influence bird diversity. We then used the information-theoretic multi-model inference approach to determine which park characteristics had significant impacts on bird species richness. Results We found that park area, habitat diversity and the distance to city center were the best positive predictors of bird species richness in Nanjing urban parks. By contrast, park isolation, park shape and environmental noise had little or no influence on bird diversity. Conclusions Our study highlights the importance of park area, habitat diversity and the distance to city center in determining bird diversity in Nanjing city parks. Therefore, from a conservation viewpoint, we recommend that large parks with complex and diverse habitats far away from the city center should be retained or constructed to increase bird diversity in urban design and planning.
