Abstract:Accepted for publication 16 May 1990 Abstract Epidemiological data, family history, clinical data, and HLA typing were studied in three groups of patients with Beh#et's syndrome: six Israeli Ashkenazi Jews, 29 non-Ashkenazi Jews, and three Israeli Arabs. HLA-B51 and B52 were present in 24/38 (63%) and 8/38 (21%), respectively, of the patients compared with 13/151 (9%) of the control group for both cases, a relative risk of 18-2 and 2-8 respectively. The syndrome was found in six of the 34 families. Ninety five per cent of the affected family members were either B51 or B52 positive. Eleven of the 14 families (79%) chosen for study contained a close relative of the proband who had recurrent oral ulcers. AU the relatives with ulcers, except for one, were B51 or B52 carriers. Recurrent oral ulcers in the patients with Behqet's syndrome began a few years before other manifestations of the syndrome occurred. Our findilgs suggest that (a) HLA-B51 and HLA-B52 are primarily associated with Behqet's disease of Israeli patients; (b) the familial occurrence of this syndrome is high and occurs predominantly in the B5 positive group; (c) recurrent oral ulcers may be the first symptom of Behqet's syndrome, appearing early in life; HLA analysis can provide the clue for a correct diagnosis; (d) ulcer recurrence is common among members of a family containing a patient with Behqet's syndrome.

Abstract:Polypeptide-bound porphyrinatoiron(III) effectively catalyzed the N,N-coupling reaction of N-methylaniline in the presence of NaBH4/O2/tetramethyl-ammonium hydroxide or cumenehydroperoxide, whereas the corresponding non-bound monomer porphyrinatoiron(III) had little catalytic activity. Rat liver microsomes also catalyzed the N,N-coupling which was inhibited by cytochrome P-450 specific inhibitors, SKF-525A and metyrapone. The polypeptide-bound porphinatoiron(III) appears to be an excellent cytochrome P-450 model for drug metabolism studies.

Abstract:Globally, especially in major cities, increasing populations and traffic congestion are changing transportation preferences. Individuals have begun to turn to micromobility solutions that provide faster and more efficient transportation for short-distance travel. Micromobility is defined as vehicles that do not exceed 350 kg in weight and 45 km/h in speed. [ 1 ] In recent years, electric scooters (e-scooters) have been frequently used for this purpose. In addition to providing ease of transportation, e-scooters offer advantages, such as easy accessibility, reduced environmental pollution, and cost-effectiveness. Initially, e-scooter usage began with individual ownership, but over time, it became accessible through rental methods owing to mobile applications provided by commercial companies. The number of shared e-scooters is projected to increase 6-fold from 2019 to 4.6 million by 2024. [ 2 ] In Turkey, e-scooter usage has also increased since 2019 with the emergence of commercial companies offering rental services. [ 3 ] The 2019 coronavirus disease pandemic and trend toward social distancing have further increased interest in transportation vehicles. [ 4 ]

Abstract:Background and purpose: Electric scooters (e-scooters) have become increasingly popular as a mode of transportation in recent years. The impact of e-scooter accidents on the healthcare system and resulting orthopaedic injuries remains largely unknown. This study describes the distribution of fractures caused by e-scooter accidents. Methods: All patients who had one or more fractures from e-scooter accidents registered in the Swedish Fracture Register (SFR) between 7 April 2019 and 30 December 2022 were included. Fractures were classified using the AO Foundation/Orthopaedic Trauma Association (AO/OTA) fracture classification system. We analysed the distribution of fractures, the proportion that required surgical management and seasonal variation of injuries. Results: During the study period, 1,874 fractures in 1,716 patients were registered in the SFR. The mean age of patients was 29 (SD 14) years and 70% of fractures occurred in males. High-energy accidents accounted for 299 fractures (16%). The most common fractures were of the hand (n = 363, 19%), wrist (n = 352, 19%) and proximal forearm (n = 356, 19%). Wrist fractures were the most common injury in children (n = 183), accounting for 44% of paediatric fractures. Surgical treatment was performed on 556 (30%) fractures, with wrist fractures being the most commonly treated in both adults (n = 78, 17%) and children (n = 36, 36%). Interpretation: Fractures caused by e-scooter accidents predominantly occur in the upper extremity. E-scooter accidents comprise a new source of injury requiring attention and surgical resources from an already strained healthcare system.
Increasing Incidence of Hand and Distal Upper Extremity Injuries Associated With Electric Scooter Use

Abstract:Purpose: Electric scooters (e-scooters) have seen an increase in popularity in cities across the United States as a form of recreation and transportation. The advent of ride-sharing applications allows anyone with a smartphone to easily access these devices, without any investment or experience required. In this study, the authors analyze scooter-related injuries of the hand and upper extremity. Methods: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) was queried to look for injuries related to the use of e-scooters between 2010 and 2019. Data collected included demographic information, the location of the injury, the injury diagnosis, and disposition. National estimates (emergency room visits in the United States) were calculated using the weight variable included in the NEISS database. Miscoded reports were excluded. As a corollary, Google Trends data were utilized to establish a correlation between e-scooter-related injuries and the relative number of e-scooter hits on the Google search engine. Results: From 2010 to 2019, there were 730 e-scooter-related injuries reported to the NEISS database. This corresponds to an estimated 26,412 injuries nationally during this time period. The incidence of scooter-related injuries increased by over 230% (2,130 national injuries in 2010; 7,213 national injuries in 2019; relative difference 5,083). Injuries most commonly occurred in patients aged 10 to 18 years (30.3%). The most frequent site of injury was the wrist (41.9%). The most common injury diagnosis was fracture (55.3%). Additionally, there was a correlation between the number of Google Trends e-scooter hits and the number of injuries during this time period. Conclusions: The incidence of e-scooter-related upper extremity injuries increased dramatically in the United States between 2010 and 2019. Clinical relevance: As novel e-scooter-sharing apps become increasingly popular, it is imperative that users are educated about the risk of injury and that use of proper protective equipment is encouraged.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the finite-dimensional dynamical control system described by scalar semilinear ordinary differential state equation with variable delay. The semilinear state equation contains both pure linear part and nonlinear perturbation. We extend the concept of controllability on trajectory controllability for systems with point delay in control and in nonlinear term. Moreover, we present remarks and comments on the relationships between different concepts of controllability. Finally we propose the possible extensions.

Abstract:E-scooter use has grown rapidly in the United States. Its rise in popularity has coincided with the promotion of cycling in many cities, but more needs to be known about how these transportation modes compare to determine if cycling should serve as an appropriate benchmark for policy decisions and safety expectations regarding e-scooters.We examined characteristics of adults seeking treatment in a Washington, DC, emergency department (ED) for injuries associated with riding e-scooters during 2019 (n = 99) or bicycles during 2015–2017 (n = 337).E-scooter incidents less frequently involved moving vehicles (13.1% vs. 37.7%) or occurred on roads (24.5% vs. 50.7%) than cycling incidents. A smaller proportion of injured e-scooter riders were ages 30–49 (32.3% vs. 48.4%) and a larger proportion were 50 and older (34.3% vs. 22.6%) or female (45.5% vs. 29.1%). Distal lower extremity injuries were more common among e-scooter riders (13.1% vs. 3.0%; RR, 2.76; 95% CI, 1.79–3.54), and injuries to the proximal upper extremity (9.1% vs. 20.5%; RR, 0.49; 95% CI, 0.24–0.92) or chest, abdomen, and spine (3.0% vs. 14.0%; RR, 0.24; 95% CI, 0.07–0.70) were less common. Head injury rates were similar, but e-scooter riders more often experienced concussion with loss of consciousness (4.0% vs. 0.6%; RR, 3.03; 95% CI, 1.20–4.09) and were far less likely to wear helmets (2.0% vs. 66.4%). Estimated ED presentation rates per million miles traveled citywide were higher among e-scooter riders than cyclists (RR, 3.76; 95% CI, 3.08–4.59).E-scooters and bicycles are both popular forms of micromobility, but the characteristics of riders injured on them, the ways in which they become injured, and the types of injuries they sustain differ substantially. E-scooter rider injury rates, though currently high, may decrease as they gain experience; however, if the number of new users continues to climb, they will persist in using the ED more often than cyclists per mile that they travel.

Abstract:Importance: Since September 2017, standing electric scooters have proliferated rapidly as an inexpensive, easy mode of transportation. Although there are regulations for safe riding established by both electric scooter companies and local governments, public common use practices and the incidence and types of injuries associated with these standing electric scooters are unknown.Objective: To characterize injuries associated with standing electric scooter use, the clinical outcomes of injured patients, and common use practices in the first US metropolitan area to experience adoption of this technology.Design, Setting, and Participants: This study of a case series used retrospective cohort medical record review of all patients presenting with injuries associated with standing electric scooter use between September 1, 2017, and August 31, 2018, at 2 urban emergency departments associated with an academic medical center in Southern California. All electric scooter riders at selected public intersections in the community surrounding the 2 hospitals were also observed during a 7-hour observation period in September 2018.Main Outcomes and Measures: Incidence and characteristics of injuries and observation of riders' common use practices.Results: Two hundred forty-nine patients (145 [58.2%] male; mean [SD] age, 33.7 [15.3] years) presented to the emergency department with injuries associated with standing electric scooter use during the study period. Two hundred twenty-eight (91.6%) were injured as riders and 21 (8.4%) as nonriders. Twenty-seven patients were younger than 18 years (10.8%). Ten riders (4.4%) were documented as having worn a helmet, and 12 patients (4.8%) had either a blood alcohol level greater than 0.05% or were perceived to be intoxicated by a physician. Frequent injuries included fractures (79 [31.7%]), head injury (100 [40.2%]), and contusions, sprains, and lacerations without fracture or head injury (69 [27.7%]). The majority of patients (234 [94.0%]) were discharged home from the emergency department; of the 15 admitted patients, 2 had severe injuries and were admitted to the intensive care unit. Among 193 observed electric scooter riders in the local community in September 2018, 182 (94.3%) were not wearing a helmet.Conclusions and Relevance: Injuries associated with standing electric scooter use are a new phenomenon and vary in severity. In this study, helmet use was low and a significant subset of injuries occurred in patients younger than 18 years, the minimum age permitted by private scooter company regulations. These findings may inform public policy regarding standing electric scooter use.

Abstract:Since the introduction of widely available e-scooter rentals in Hamburg, Germany in June of 2019, our emergency department has seen a sharp increase in the amount of e-scooter related injuries. Despite a rising number of studies certain aspects of e-scooter mobility remain unclear. This study examines the various aspects of e-scooter associated injuries with one of the largest cohorts to date. Electronic patient records of emergency department admissions were screened for e-scooter associated injuries between June 2019 and December 2021. Patient demographic data, mechanism of injury, alcohol consumption, helmet usage, sustained injuries and utilized medical resources were recorded. Overall, 268 patients (57% male) with a median age of 30.3 years (IQR 23.3; 40.0) were included. 252 (94%) were e-scooter riders themselves, while 16 (6%) were involved in crashes associated with an e-scooter. Patients in non-rider e-scooter crashes were either cyclists who collided with e-scooter riders or older pedestrians (median age 61.2 years) who tripped over parked e-scooters. While e-scooter riders involved in a crash sustained an impact to the head or face in 58% of cases, those under the influence of alcohol fell on their head or face in 84% of cases. This resulted in a large amount of maxillofacial soft tissue lacerations and fractures. Extremity fractures and dislocations were more often recorded for the upper extremities. This study comprises one of the largest cohorts of e-scooter associated injuries to date. Older pedestrians are at risk to stumble over parked e-scooters. E-scooter crashes with riders who consumed alcohol were associated with more severe injuries, especially to the head and face. Restricted e-scooter parking, enforcement of drunk driving laws for e-scooters, and helmet usage should be recommended.

The cost of electric-scooter related orthopaedic surgery

Abstract:Aim: To highlight the growing cost of electric-scooter (e-scooter) related injuries necessitating surgical intervention by the Auckland City Hospital Orthopaedic Department. Methods: Retrospective audit of operations by the Auckland City Hospital Orthopaedic Department from 15 October 2018 up to and inclusive of 22 February 2019. Inclusion criteria was that the direct cause of injury necessitating surgery was secondary to an e-scooter accident. Further demographic data was collected including injury sustained and operation details. The surgical costs were calculated, including anaesthetic time, surgical time, staffing, implants used and inpatient stay as well as clinic follow-up. Results: Over the 19-week period of this study there were 21 patients requiring 23 operations as a direct result of e-scooters. The summative anaesthetic, theatre suite and staffing costs of these operations was $162,901. Implants required to fix the fractures totalled $39,898. Ninety-three inpatient nights and 61 follow-up clinic appointments were required incurring an additional expense of $141,639 and $16,119 respectively. Overall, these 23 cases cost a total of $360,557. The extrapolated loss of income was $44,368 secondary to these injuries. This represents a total economic cost of $404,925, or $19,282 per person. Conclusion: This study highlights that there can be serious consequences of e-scooter travel. High energy trauma not previously associated with scooter injuries is becoming increasingly prevalent as a result of readily available e-scooters. Many of the injuries identified represent significant morbidity to patients in terms of pain, lengthy rehabilitation and loss of income. Furthermore, the socioeconomic costs for DHBs continues to climb and adds to the acute surgical burden in an already busy healthcare system. The hazards of e-scooters should not be underestimated by both the general public and policy-makers.

Abstract:Background Electric scooters (e‐Scooters) are a form of motorized vehicle that offers cheap, efficient and environmentally friendly transportation. Increased e‐Scooter utilization has been accompanied by increases in e‐Scooter related injuries in multiple countries. This project describes the incidence, injury pattern, injury severity and patient factors associated with e‐Scooter use from the Western Australian State Trauma Registry. Methods Retrospective cohort of all trauma patients captured by the Western Australian State Trauma Registry between 01 July 2017 and 30 June 2022 were analysed. Patient demographics, helmet use, reported drug use, and injury details (including principal and additional diagnoses, ISS) were collected. Results Eighty‐one patients sustained e‐Scooter related injuries between 2017 and 2022. Fifty‐four (66%) of hospital admissions were recorded in 2021–2022, an annual percent change of 385.7% from the previous year. Most patients were male (80%). Median age was 40 years (IQR: 32–50). Helmet use was reported in 43% of patients. Helmet use was associated with a significantly lower odds of head injury (OR = 4.42, CI: 1.38–14.21; P = 0.01). Thirty‐five percent of patients were intoxicated with either alcohol or drugs. Forty‐four (54%) patients required surgery. Conclusion E‐Scooter crashes are a new mechanism of injury affecting patients captured by the Western Australian State Trauma Registry. Helmet use correlated with a reduced risk of head injury.

Abstract:Introduction E-scooters are a convenient, relatively inexpensive and fun new mode of transportation with rapidly increased use in cities throughout the world. Despite the popularity of e-scooters, increases in rider injuries and fatalities have become a public health concern. Objective. To characterize the types of safety issues associated with e-scooter use. Methods. Scoping review methods focused on any safety issues associated with the use of dockless, stand-up, motorized, electric kick scooters from companies offering short-term rentals or through private ownership, published in English between January 2017 and March 2022. Databases included Academic Search Complete, Business Source Complete, Google Scholar, PsychINFO, PubMed, Scopus, SocINDEX, TRID Database, and Web of Science databases. After abstract screening and full text review, a total of 81 studies were included in the scoping review. Results. Few e-scooter riders wear helmets except where legally required. Alcohol impairment is a primary contributor to e-scooter injuries. Younger males, underage riding, double riding, speeding and rider distraction were also identified as behavioural contributors to e-scooter injury crashes. Environmental contributors included crash locations (e.g., sidewalks, bike paths, roads) parking issues (e.g., tripping hazard), fixed object collisions (e.g., lampposts, parked cars), road surface and slope (e.g., uneven, curbs, downhills) and insufficient nighttime visibility. E-scooter reliability was affected by brake failures and design limitations (e.g., stability over rough terrain). Injury patterns included mechanism of injury (loss of balance and/or control, fall) and moving object collisions (e.g., vehicles, pedestrians, bicyclists). The head, face, upper and lower extremities were the most common anatomical locations injured. Fractures, contusions, concussions, lacerations, and sprains were the most frequent injury types. Discussion. Policies, regulations and interventions that address helmet requirements, alcohol and drug use, rider skill and knowledge acquisition, restrictive speed limits, education and enforcement are discussed with respect to evidence-based safety guidance for transportation policy and decision makers. Conclusion . Behavioural, environmental and device design safety issues associated with e-scooter use require effective interventions to reduce the frequency and severity of rider injuries.

Abstract:Background: This study presents the epidemiology and the development of e-scooter and non-electric scooter injuries in children and adolescents to highlight the nature and the severity of such injuries. Methods: All children and adolescents with electric or non-electric scooter related injuries between January 2019 until December 2022 were included in this single-centre study and retrospectively evaluated. An epidemiological overview including age, sex, type of scooter, injury mechanism, diagnosed injuries and surgical interventions were presented. Further, statistical comparisons of the means and proportions of injuries and the number of surgical interventions between electric and non-electric scooter riders were made. Results: The study consists of 633 children and adolescents (9.1 ± 5.0 years; 231 female, 36.5%, 402 male, 63.5%). 80.1% (8.0 ± 4.1 years) used non-electric scooters, while 19.9% (14.2 ± 4.1 years) used e-scooters. In comparison, adolescent e-scooter riders were significantly more likely to be involved in traffic accidents (non-electric scooter: 16/507; e-scooter: 21/126; p = 0.0001) and suffered severe head injuries more often (non-electric scooter: 8/134; e-scooter: 7/37; p = 0.0217) than patients riding non-electric scooters. Conclusion: Adolescent e-scooter riders were more likely to be involved in potentially life-threatening traffic accidents having a higher risk of severe head injuries requiring surgery compared to non-electric scooter riders. Impact: Adolescent e-scooter riders have a higher risk to be involved in potentially life-threatening traffic accidents than riders of non-electric scooters. E-scooter riders have a higher risk of sustaining serious head injuries requiring surgical intervention than non-electric scooter riders. The data highly recommends the implementation of prevention strategies especially educating youth and parents and wearing protective clothing. Legislation and law enforcement could help prevent such injuries and potentially life-threatening traffic accidents involving children and adolescents who ride e-scooters.

Despite broad adoption of electric micromobility vehicles, there is a paucity of data regarding the injury profiles of these vehicles, particularly in the US. Objective: To characterize micromobility injury trends in the US, identify demographic characteristic differences in users of electric and conventional vehicles, and identify factors associated with hospitalization. Design, setting, and participants: This cross-sectional study queried the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, a comprehensive database that collates injury data associated with consumer products from emergency departments across the US to provide national estimates, from calendar year 2017 to 2022. Data on micromobility vehicle injuries (bicycles, scooters, electric bicycles [e-bicycles], and electric scooters [e-scooters]) were obtained. Main outcomes and measures: Trends in injury and hospitalization counts, injury characteristics, and factors associated with hospitalization. Results: From 2017 to 2022, the US recorded 2 499 843 bicycle (95% CI, 1 948 539-3 051 147), 304 783 scooter (95% CI, 232 466-377 099), 45 586 e-bicycle (95% CI, 17 684-73 488), and 189 517 e-scooter (95% CI, 126 101-252 932) injuries. The median age of the riders was 28 (IQR, 12-51) years; 72% were male, 1.5% Asian, 13% Black, 12% Hispanic, and 49% White. Annual e-bicycle and e-scooter injuries increased from 751 (95% CI, 0-1586) to 23 493 (95% CI, 11 043-35 944) and injuries increased from 8566 (95% CI, 5522-11 611) to 56 847 (95% CI, 39 673-74 022). Compared with conventional vehicles, electric vehicle accidents involved older individuals (median age, 31 vs 27 years; P < .001) and a higher proportion of Black riders (25% vs 12%; P < .001). Helmet use was less in electric vehicle incidents compared with conventional vehicles (43% vs 52%; P = .02), and injuries were more common in urban settings (83% vs 71%; P = .008). Age-adjusted odds of hospitalization among all Black individuals compared with White individuals was 0.76 (95% CI, 0.59-0.98; P = .04). Conclusions and relevance: In this cross-sectional study of micromobility vehicles, an increased number of injuries and hospitalizations was observed with electric vehicles compared with conventional vehicles from 2017 to 2022. These findings suggest the need for change in educational policies, infrastructure, and law to recenter on safety with the use of micromobility vehicles.
Major trauma among E-Scooter and bicycle users: a nationwide cohort study

Abstract:Objectives To determine the incidence, demographics and injury patterns involved in E-Scooter-related hospital admissions due to significant trauma compared with bicycle-related trauma within England and Wales. To compare morbidity and mortality between groups. Design A retrospective cohort study based on data which has been prospectively collected and submitted to the UK Trauma Audit and Research Network (TARN) registry. Setting Major trauma centres and trauma units within England and Wales. Participants Patients of any age who were admitted to hospitals in England and Wales with injuries following E-Scooter or bicycle incidents between the dates 1 January 2021–31 December 2021. All patients must have met TARN database inclusion criteria. Outcomes In-hospital mortality, critical care admission and length of stay (LoS), hospital LoS and discharge destination. Results There were 293 E-Scooter trauma incidents compared with 2538 bicycle incidents. E-Scooter users were more likely to be admitted to a major trauma centre (p=0.019) or a critical care unit (p 2) occurred more frequently among the E-Scooter cohort (35.2% vs 19.7%, p<0.001 and 39.9% vs 27.2%, p<0.001, respectively) while serious chest and pelvic trauma were greater among bicycle users (p<0.001 and p=0.003, respectively). Over one-third of E-Scooter injuries were incurred outside the current legislation by patients who were intoxicated by alcohol and drugs (26%, 75/293) or under the age of 17 (14%, 41/293). Conclusions These early results suggest a greater relative incidence of serious trauma and an alternative pattern of injury among E-Scooter users compared with bicycles. Abstract:Background: Electric scooters (e-scooters) have become a widely adopted form of transportation. Information regarding the timing, conditions, and context associated with increased frequency of e-scooter-related injuries could inform policy that may potentially reduce associated injuries and healthcare costs. However, this information is lacking, as most research to date has focused on the injury patterns sustained while using e-scooters rather than context. We sought to evaluate these factors in an urban setting and describe how these are evolving over time, as such information may help guide future safety initiatives. Questions/purposes: (1) How has the epidemiology of e-scooter-related injuries in Denver, CO, USA, changed over time? (2) What are the associated hospital charges to treat patients with these injuries? (3) What circumstances are associated with an increased frequency of e-scooter-related injuries and higher accompanying hospital charges? Methods: A retrospective study at a Level 1 trauma center in Denver, CO, USA, examined trends in e-scooter-related injuries from January 1, 2020, to November 1, 2023. Patients were identified by the key terms "e-scooter crash" or "scooter" within their emergency department/urgent care visit notes. Patient demographic and injury characteristics and hospital data (admission and hospital charges) were analyzed. Patients who sustained injuries from devices other than stand-up e-scooters or who did not have complete records available for analysis were excluded. The epidemiologic data on e-scooter-related injuries were quantified for each year within the study period, and descriptive analyses were performed to assess patient and injury characteristics, including age, gender, and fracture characteristics. Hospital charges were calculated using the mean annual sum of hospital charges associated with the treatment for e-scooter-related injuries. Circumstances influencing the frequency of injury and magnitude of hospital charges were assessed based on the timing of presentation to the emergency department or urgent care. We recognize that charge may have little or no direct relationship to true cost, but we believe that within one hospital system it represents a reasonable metric for comparative resource utilization. Injury frequency by time of the day and day of the week were compared using chi-square goodness-of-fit analyses. The value of hospital charges associated with e-scooter-related injuries was compared between patients presenting with alcohol intoxication and those who were not intoxicated. Results: In all, 2424 patients were identified as having e-scooter-related injuries (58% [1405] men, 42% [1019] women, median (IQR) age 30 years [25 to 37 years]). The number of annual e-scooter-related injuries during the years 2020 to 2023 were 273 in 2020, 736 in 2021, 758 in 2022, and 657 in 2023 (only 10 months). From 2020 to 2023, the mean annual sum of hospital charges for treatment of e-scooter-related injuries was USD 10.4 million; USD 6.4 million in 2020, USD 11.5 million in 2021, USD 11.9 million in 2022, and USD 10.9 million in 2023 (only 10 months). Hospital charges associated with orthopaedic e-scooter-related injuries amounted to a mean annual sum of USD 3.6 million over the 4-year study period; USD 1.5 million in 2020, USD 3.9 million in 2021, USD 4.5 million in 2022, and USD 4.1 million in 2023 (only 10 months). Forty-five percent (1098) of all e-scooter-related injuries occurred between 7 PM and 3 AM, and 44% (1064) of them occurred over the weekend. The treatment of e-scooter-related injuries incurred higher hospital charges if injuries occurred during night hours (median [IQR] USD 10,459 [4779 to 16,423]) compared with early morning (USD 4973 [1178 to 11,671]) or daytime hours (USD 4871 [1059 to 11,673]; p < 0.001), or while patients were intoxicated (USD 13,404 [10,346 to 22,525]) compared with those who were not intoxicated (USD 6132 [2612 to 13,620]; p < 0.001). Conclusion: E-scooter-related injuries are increasing in frequency and occur most commonly during nighttime and weekend hours. Total hospital charges to treat these injuries are also increasing annually, with the highest charges observed during evening hours and in patients presenting with alcohol intoxication. These results may help inform e-scooter awareness initiatives and policy reform to place restrictions on e-scooter use during periods of highest injury frequency and healthcare charges. Further research related to the efficacy of implementing e-scooter restrictions is needed. Future observational studies evaluating time of injury compared with presentation for treatment could help to provide a more precise understanding of the epidemiology of these injuries. Abstract:The popularity of electric scooters (ES) during the last five years due to climate neutrality and public availability led to increased numbers in traffic accidents with significant injuries. This study was conducted to overview e-scooter related computed tomography (CT) positive traumatic brain injuries, exploring circumstances, clinical course, outcomes and possible relations to behavioral patterns. We retrospectively reviewed medical data of all patients treated in our center during the period 2019 to 2023, medical records were analysed and statistically processed. This review included 45 patients, 75.7% were males and median age was 40 years old. Patient numbers did not differ between weekdays, working days versus weekends and time of the day. Eighty percent of patients were injured from falling off the scooter, the rest were hit by another vehicle while riding. None of the patients were known using helmet, significant alcohol intoxication was found in 68.8% of cases. The most common traumatic intracranial features were subarachnoid hemorrhage (55.6%), followed by brain contusions (48.9%), epidural (26.7%), subdural (26.7%) hemorrhages. Age had a positive correlation with alcohol intoxication ( r = 0.596, p = 0.007) and poor outcomes ( r = 0.522, p = 0.004), also, men over 40 years old were more likely to undergo surgery ( p = 0.024), meanwhile operated patients suffered more infections ( p = 0.011) and more often ended with poor outcomes ( p < 0.001).
